what a wonderful story! dancing

I was so pleased to see that there was another one featuring the Jinns, and yay Qui-Gon meets them!

But what's going to happen now? It seems Amri and Lenora's peaceful household has been thrown into turmoil.

And as for Obi-Wan hmm... worried

Can't wait for your update, please let me know when you post it, if it's not too much trouble! hugs

Thank you guys so much for your reviews...and the 'up's. hugs Sorry I took so long to update - but there've been issues - and I'm still sick. But I managed to write some stuff. happy

Kynstar: Thanks. Poor Obi, left in a house full of Jinns indeed. Can he hold his own, under their scrutiny? grin

LuvEwan: My dear, your reviews never fail to put me on cloud nine. blush I'm glad you like the way I've written Qui/Obi...so here's more.

Shaindl: Lol. Jinn's trying to distance himself, indeed. And with good reason - at least according to him. Thanks. hugs

My padawan: Thanks for the lovely review. I'm glad the story pulled you in - I'm always concerned about that, paddy mine. grin . You think Amri-Lon's inconsiderate? Hmm... thinking Now that's a different perspective. Thanks!

maychorian: Have you noticed that sometimes, when you're particularly tuned to something, it keeps catching your eye? I expect that's the way it caught Obi-Wan's eyes too. As for why Qui came here in the first place... Nothing very complicated, not at all. grin

VaderLVR64: <grabs Qui-Gon to herself> Its band enough that you've got Anakin... angry grin
Thanks, Vadey.

dianethx: Qui's going to get some kind of message - whether its reassurance or not, is something else. Maverick he might be, but even he has his own code to follow. Foolish Obi-Wan indeed, but even if he's Jedi, he's still attached enough to Qui-Gon to feel a great many misgivings. Makes way for lots of angst, ya know. grin Thanks, m'lady.

Lady_Snow_Kaguya: Thank you. Yes, 'Setta's in shock. She's been used to ruling the roost, of sorts. And Amri can't help feeling nice to Obi. grin

PadawanKitara: <hugs> Thank you, PK.

Master_Noi: Yep, they do understand each other - but whether that understanding will last long... <hastily shakes head> Yes,. Yes, it will. Yes.

grin Thanks, Noi.

-Darksaber-: <bows> Thank you. happy

PadawanEstel: Everyone's very confused. And it will take some time resolving. grin Thanks for reading!

Gkilkenny: Thank you. happy

River_Stone: Wow...thank you. grin . As for being a professional author... sigh. One can always dream. grin

Jedi_Tigris: Qui-Gon's contact is coming up...now. Thanks for reading. happy

Layren: You would feel sorry for Qui-Gon. grin What about poor Obi, eh? Thanks for reading, dear. And I hope you're feeling miles better now.

Shadowolf: Lol, thanks. More comes up, now.

JEDI-KNIGHTS_R_L: Never mind about missing posts. I take a long enough time to update, anyway...ah well. grin thanks for reading.

Seven: <sighs at after-four-days post> Thank you young one. happy Drat RL...and other plot-bunnies.

Musing: Ah, my dear Musing...I'm glad you're still sticking with my writing - such as it is. Yup, its a spin-off of Vadey's story (which you probably know, by now) - and yes, 'Setta and Exeldor know of their brother, but don't know him personally.

kateydidnt, Seven: Thanks for the 'up's. hugs

Aya-Na_Bashu: Thanks. Glad you liked it. happy

LilQui-Gon: Yay, at last. grin

JOINME: Turmoil indeed. We'll see how they shake themselves out, shall we? grin Thanks for reading.

Dragonlady, meg_an2006, Musing: Love ya. Post’s up. hugs

I apologize for the long gap - I'll try a schedule or something, in future. <glares at muse>

VII

A tiny red mark on his upper arm. An angry bruise. A shocked wail. A frowning face, framed by waves of golden hair, and icy blue eyes.

It was not the ideal memory—but it was the earliest memory Exeldor had, of his sister.

It would be years before he understood the childish pinch for what it was—childish. He had been too young to understand it then, and had waddled to his mother, sobbing. Or so Lenora had told him.

Eventually the petty jealousies had worn off, sibling wars lost in bigger, larger attacks by others. It was the first time he had seen ‘Setta not as a mulish older girl, but as a protective sister, eager to shield him from harm. ‘Touch my brother and I’ll kill you’, she had shrieked at the neighbourhood bully—and from that moment, her little brother had sworn eternal fealty to her. As she had, to him.

Later years had seen them through turbulent emotions. Exeldor, taking after his mother, possessed a sweetness of temperament and clearness of mind that his bigger, older sister did not often share. Just as his loyalty to her had shown him the soft, inner core of her being, his natural intelligence likewise had made him aware of the fact that she could be angry—very angry—and often for reasons he considered trivial.

It was who she was, he realized, with the experience and knowledge of years and instinct. She felt…too much. When she withheld, it led to her recipient being parched of feeling; when she gave—and fortunately, she almost always did—she gave without reservations.

He had drawn on her strengths often…and she had never yet failed him.

He looked at her now, seated on a rough boulder on the border of the nearest wheit field, hands clasped in her lap, ankles crossed under her elegant skirts.

Despite her status—or rather, because of it—‘Setta cared little for attire; Drie Bord’ah often claimed that she died a thousand deaths at the horrendous ways ‘Setta treated her selks.

“Father is unhappy, I think,” Exeldor spoke in his soft voice—another gift from Lenora.

His sister looked up at him, eyes awash with recrimination. “Did he say so? Have you spoken to him, then?” her tone was sharp, impatient.

“No, how could I? I haven’t spoken to either of them since I arrived…I was too busy worrying about Mama. I looked in on her—even if I couldn’t speak to her.”

‘Setta’s lips straightened into a thin line. “This has affected her.”

“I’d have been surprised if it didn’t. It’s affected you too.” A decade ago, he would have cringed at speaking to her about her feelings…marriage and fatherhood had broken the myth that had resided in him about the female species.

As expected, she threw a look that would have withered a younger man. “It hasn’t,” came the stiff reply, and she turned away, passing a hand over her head as though to protect herself from the Naboo sun. “Mother’s already melted into a puddle of emotion about a long-lost Jedi son…and father must dote on him too.” She shot a look at him. “I can tell that you are already in awe about him.”

“How could I? I haven’t even seen him yet.”

“I expect you’re fairly bursting with eagerness to meet your brother, the great Jedi.”

“Assuming he is my brother, of course.”

“Father says they have records.”

Exeldor paused. “I suppose they could check with the—the Temple, if clarification’s needed.”

“He’s father’s image.” She hesitated, and then spoke with an effort. “His blue eyes…mother’s brown hair.”

Exeldor drew a deep breath. If ‘Setta was right—and she was rarely wrong—then this mystery brother would be the only one among them to resemble one of their parents completely. A strange ache settled in a corner of his heart. Neither he nor Jesetta had really taken after Amri-Lon or Lenora fully. Both resembled their parents in individual features, but they had more of Lenora’s clan in them—the Jinn genes were apparent mostly in character. As a result, Jesetta had the golden-haired beauty of Lenora’s mother, while Exeldor himself had taken after his mother’s brothers. They had even been named after Lenora’s relations…it seemed that their elder brother had assumed all of Amri-Lon himself, even to his father’s name. How much of his mother he had in him, still remained to be seen.

Qui-Gon Jinn. Jedi Master. Belonging to an exotic Order of which tales were heard, everyday, amongst planets even in the Outer Rim. Someone who went on missions that decided the very fate of planets and star systems. Who travelled in space ships, shuttles and starfighters that he, a farmer, had only read about, and would probably never even see in his lifetime. He probably had a light stick…no, sword—what was the weapon the Jedi in his son’s favourite holo-show carried? A sabre. Did he possess such a weapon? And could he…use the Force, or whatever it was?

He even had difficulty wrapping his mind around the name. Qui-Gon Jinn. All that he knew of this…brother, was what he had heard from occasional, disjointed accounts from his parents. They never spoke about him if they could help it. And he remembered just one holo—of a child with bright blue eyes, and bobbing curls.

A sudden spark of curiosity came to life within him. A sudden longing to see what this brother might be like.

After all, their parents’ eldest son had returned. A Jedi.

And that reminded him… “ ‘Setta, who’s the boy I saw, inside?”

“Boy?” She was still staring at the horizon. Her eyes still sparkled, but some calmness had returned to them. “Oh, that one. His paduwun.”

“His what?”

She wrinkled her brows. “That’s what Kasche called him,” she threw Exeldor a rueful look. “My little one knows more about Jedi than I do.”

“This, this paduwone,” spoke Exeldor carefully. “Is he—ah—his companion? Partner in missions or something?”

“I doubt it,” was her dismissive answer. “He looks just a kid. He couldn’t be much older than Rayfe, I think. Might be his little tag-along helper. I wouldn’t know.”

“Or he could be his student.”

“Probably.” She raised her eyebrows. “He’s of little account.”

“You might have to think again,” Exeldor skirted her and walked closer to one of the windows that opened out into the backyard. It looked into the sitting-room. “Father and Sarta are entertaining him, right royally.”

‘Setta stood up quickly, shaking out her skirts. “Sarta? You brought her with you?” She went up to the window with him.

They watched, as Amri-Lon and Sarta sat on either side of a slender young man, who seemed to be finding his plate very interesting.

“Of course I did. Father told me to bring her, after all,” Exeldor looked at her through the corner of his eyes. “Mama will be all right, ‘Setta.”

Men. ‘Setta quirked her mouth. “What would you know?” She watched the sight inside, her gaze hardening. “You’ve already ranged yourself on his side, I see.”

“ ‘Setta, enough.” He put a hand on his shoulder, knowing full well that she hated to be touched when she was angry. “Ale’el,” he spoke softly, addressing her with the fond title that the Naboo often used to call their elder sisters. “This isn’t like you. You’re distressed, but…” His voice trailed away. How could he accuse his elder sister of jealousy? “They will be gone soon enough. Judging from what father told me over the com-line, they’re far too busy on their missions to tarry.”

Aié, that’s exactly my point,” his sister retorted. “Far too busy on missions; stiff and unemotional; intent on their work and not a spark of feeling—they walk over the place as if they own it,” She continued, warming to her theme. “Use those brains I’m sure you possess under those brown curls of yours—mama and father have already lost him once. Must they go through it all again?”

He clasped his hands behind his back, considering this point. “But ale’el,” he said. “They would have had a chance of seeing their dream—a dream they thought they would never share. They would be seeing the results of a sacrifice they made years ago.” He stopped, not fearing her acid gaze. “That would more than make up for a separation wouldn’t it? If he does intend to leave, that is. He might not. He must have attained some status in that Order of his, to visit us—I’ve heard their rules, and how strictly they keep to it.”

She swallowed, and he knew that the thought of him not leaving hadn’t appealed to her at all. She looked up at him. “D’you think I’m jealous?” She had begun sharply, but her tone turned soft, towards the end.

Exeldor opened his mouth, then closed it. “Maybe you should give yourself—and them—some time, before you come to any conclusion,” he finished diplomatically, wondering if she would subside into serenity, or explode into a shower of sparks.

She lowered her head, toying with her sash. “My youngest is already in love with them.” There was a hint of laughter in her voice. Suddenly, she clutched Exeldor’s hands. “ ‘Dor…don’t think too badly of me, will you?” Her eyes glittered, and she brushed them swiftly, angry at the weakness. “You’re all I have.”

“That’s not true, and you know it.” He grasped her hand firmly. “No matter what, ‘Setta, remember we’re kin. Nothing can change that. Ale’el, no one can take your place,” he murmured, brushing her golden locks.

She smiled sunnily at him, for the first time since his arrival. “Never thought you’d grow up so much, little kaft.”

He grinned back. No one can take your place, Ale’el. But I’m willing to give him a chance too.

************

He sat in front of one of the tiniest terminals he had ever seen.

Well. Perhaps he had seen other, smaller terminals, but he hadn’t seen such a one in a long time. And this one as remarkably old-fashioned, HHX546 viewscreen model, one which had lost the race of time and technology in the Core worlds. It still retained some importance in Naboo, however. Or perhaps the Gergen sector, largely agricultural, had decided that technology had very little use within it. Certainly, it resembled none of the superior machinery in Theed.

None of Theed's finery and suavity either, he mused, if one had to go by the looks he had received as he had walked into the sector.

It was a peaceful mid-morning by Gergen standards, and most were going about their work, or giving the appearance of it, anyway. The Market street had a smattering of small shops and stalls, and his sharp ears heard knots of people buying, selling, walking, loitering, discussing the latest on wheit fields, and the best fertilizers that could be used.

The sight of a tall human, wearing brown robes that fell gracefully from his shoulders, long, wavy chestnut hair, served to draw their attentions certainly. He had expected something of this kind, and had made sure to cloud his Force presence slightly—but there was no disguising his assured walk, his height, and the air of purpose that surrounded him.

Amusement touched him as he had approached the nearest shop—the tiniest one, in the whole street it seemed, and that sold something in large plasti-bags.

“Stinks,” a youngster had murmured, before catching sight of Qui-Gon, and gaping.

Qui-Gon breathed in the air—fresh, sweet and untainted. Ah, that Coruscant might have something of this taste in its recycled, scented breezes. “Pardon,” he had begun, and the owner of the shop had placed whatever he was holding on the counter, very slowly. “Could you please direct me to the nearest Com-Centre?”

“Uh.” The Naboo had nodded slowly eyes wide with wonderment, and had pointed towards a low-lying building in the distance. “Over there.” He said. “Sir.” He spoke, as an afterthought.

Qui-Gon had nodded graciously and left, his robes almost sweeping the ground. “Outlander,” he heard the murmurs, behind him.

Thus, in a small, ridiculously compact Com-Centre (thankfully empty), in front of a tiny viewscreen—and contacting Coruscant.

Barely twenty seconds had passed since he had lapsed into his reverie, when the Jedi Temple’s icon appeared at last—thank the Force.

He contemplated the flashing symbol with mixed feelings. Fortunately, his was an enclosed cabin—he had asked for one. He looked about for a retinal-scanner, seemingly located out of sight, unlike the terminals he was used to, and gained access into the Temple’s systems. The cyber pathways bypassed him through standard procedures, Visitor’s assistance, Enquiry, and led him, after two more standard identification checks, to the Master’s section, Archives.

“State your business, please,” growled out the tiny amplifier, and he sighed, aware that protocol had to be followed. Not that that saved him from impatience—an impatience he was hesitant to acknowledge.

“Access Personal Records, Qui-Gon Jinn.”

“Status?” Protocol, again.

“Jedi Master. Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

“Access to personal Records granted. Directory: Missions: Sub-directory, Classified—”

“Access Birth Records.”

There was a moment’s silence. Then, the voice grilled out. “Access to Birth Records requires Authorization from Current Archives Master, Jedi Temple.”

“I wish to speak to the Archives Master.”

Silence again. He sat back, one hand stroking his beard, as odd noises crept into the cabin from the street outside.

Moments, later, a rich voice filtered through the amplifier, accompanied by a slightly grainy image. “Master C’Lyn Bortan.”

Qui-Gon pursed his lips, and began.

OH, I liked that Setta was so jealous and yet the younger brother was willing to see this Jedi claiming to be his brother. I assume that Qui-Gon is making sure that the birth records agree with his parents.

Good job. Looking forward to more.

I just stumbled onto this! Wonderful story! I love the different reactions of the Jinns, and poor Obi Wan- he must be feeling very uncertain now sad Can't wait to what the next chapter brings us, namely QuiGon's heritage and maybe some more interaction between Obi and his family?
Hope to see more soon praying

Obi-Wan offered himself as a highly responsible role model in “Episode II.” He didn’t like reckless driving;
he disapproved of being chained to a big pillar as large animals with pincers approached;
he just said no to deathsticks.

Where's the rest of it? How could you leave it there?! shock tongue

I loved the characterization of the brother and sister. So realistic. I especially like the brother, and how through being married and having children he has a new understanding of women.

Don't like that Obi-Wan was staring down at his plate. sad This has to be the strangest situation for him.

Once again, you write Qui-Gon just perfectly, the way he strides through the town and commands such curious attention and near-awe from others. applause

I was so excited to see this updated I can't even tell you. Bravo! dancing

Hurray for updates!

I have a feeling that 'Setta and Obi-Wan would get on quite well if their characters allowed it - they are both afraid of losing something they love or being pushed out of the loop. I enjoy how you've written Exeldor, how he helped his sister and yet is still determined to meet a brother long since forgotten.

And don't worry about the length of time between posting. If you need Seven and I to throw things at DRL for you, we can. (We may end up running away in cowardly terror but the attempt will be there...as will sticks!)

I was so glad to see this updated when I got home from work!! This chapter gave us a little peak into how deep a sister and brother relationship can go, you did wonderfully. Poor Obi-Wan though, I feel so bad for him, he must feel so uncomfortable, and for some reason I don't think he will get much comfort from Qui-Gon for a little bit. Can't wait for more!!

Cool! applause I loved the brother/sister talk. I can imagine having such a conversation with one my siblings when we're both adults, with the weight of our childhood in our words and actions, and the warmth of family between us in even in disagreement. I love them all! hugs Every member of this family is so real and likable, and different.

Can't wait for more!

Yay! More of this.

Wow, that is one jealous sister. They seem so disturbed that Qui-Gon actually looks like their father.
