A/N: Resurrecting long-forgotten stories. Again, apologies for the delay. Do forgive? [face_plead]

Part IX

He saw them standing side by side, against the wall of the building. It was obvious that they were siblings: they were not really alike in colouring, but Obi-Wan now had the advantage of knowledge. He could see the lines of the nose and the curve of ears. The eyes and the hair. They were certainly as unalike as could be ... but genes did count for a lot. They stood close to each other, almost as though they were barricading themselves against a possible onslaught. The woman's fingers gripped each other tight, while the man was leaning against the wall, seemingly casual, but with an arm around her shoulders.

He was careful not to gaze at them openly, although the temptation to do so was irresistible. Now that he knew who they were ... and there was no doubt in him that they were his master's siblings. He felt some surprise at the way his mind had accepted it. Perhaps it was do with the way the Force moved around them. It seemed a tangible presence - moving and swirling around them all, now touching one, then the other. The more he felt the movements of the Force, the more correct it all seemed. The Force showed him more about them, than could be seen by the naked eye.

He walked along the grassy surface, aware of their gaze on him, knowing that they had probably been discussing him as they watched his back, knowing that it couldn't really have been a cheerful discussion. There was always the possibility that it couldn't have ... but it seemed right to him, somehow, that they shouldn't be very pleased. Why was the feeling so strong in him? He cast his mind back to the first meeting with the woman, unconsciously falling back on his Jedi training, sorting out the memories, the emotions, and bringing back the feel of the room as it had been. As his master had taught him.

And knew the reason at once. The woman's eyes. They had given her away. That was the reason for his discomfort.

Resolutely, he pushed back the unease that surged up within.

What puzzled him was the why of it. Why this? Why now? What was to be gained by this? By bringing them face to face with bonds and ties a Jedi was better off not knowing? To Qui-Gon, of all people. Qui-Gon Jinn, who advocated his apprentice to 'feel, not think.' Who lived in the moment, relished and immersed himself within it. As he had once done with another. With Tahl.

Tahl.

He stopped abruptly, right in the middle of the sunny wheit field. Vaguely, his mind registered that there was no sign of a refresher here. There couldn't be, unless one of those ramshackle buildings to his far right was a refresher. Why had the woman said that the refresher was outside? Had she been flustered and nervous? He had sensed amazement and surprise, but no nervousness. A remarkably strong woman, that one. Had she known that he simply wanted to walk out? Walk out and then stand right in the middle of a wheit field, rigid with memories of what happened to Qui-Gon and Tahl.

There. There it was, whatever had been niggling in the back of his mind. The little thought, growing and growing, that had finally thrown him out of the house.

It was as though he was suddenly surrounded by a bubble of vacuum; the air had been sucked away. His lungs were not working. His heart felt as though it had lodged itself in his throat, and he felt the edges of his vision swim. Startled, he shook himself. It had been years since he had felt such a strong reaction. He hadn't allowed himself to feel such things in a very long time. Except on hard missions, when it seemed as though everything was going to end in a disaster ...

Breathe, he told himself. Breathe, you fool. Fool, that you think of this meeting a disaster. That Qui-Gon Jinn, famed Jedi Master would ever let his feelings grow too much, let his affection for his birth family, destroy everything he felt for the Order. A family that he had not seen for decades. That he had never known. He would not. Not after Xanatos. After Tahl. After all the friends he had lost. Nothing could still exert a pull over him. Nothing but the Order would still bind him …

Nothing else would mean quite so much to Qui-Gon as the Order and his ... padawan.

There. It was out now. What had been tormenting him for the past hour.

Detachedly, he noticed that his hands were trembling. Sickness filled him. Remorse. I am selfish, he thought, feeling the hot Naboo sun on his head. I do not follow the will of the Force. I am so selfish that I wish Qui-Gon would simply return, collect me and return to Theed. Never to visit these people again. These people who so obviously wish him gone elsewhere. Excellent. They and I both wish the same. They do not wish Qui-Gon to approach their patents. I do not wish them to approach my master. Qui-Gon has suffered enough; his feelings have tortured him for more years that I care to number. He has been betrayed more times than any Jedi would care to count. I will not let them cause him pain. A Jedi is denied his family for a good many reasons. He and I have just been confronted with the best of them.

No, no. His siblings may wish at the hells of Coruscant, but his parents did not.

He groaned, lifting a hand to his forehead. This was wrong. All wrong. He must not feel this way. He must not feel. Exactly this way had he battled, six years ago, desperate for a master to choose him. Desperate that Qui-Gon choose him. He cringed now, vivid images of how he had looked at the master hopefully, eyes brimming with eagerness. They still haunted him, in his nightmares.

Of all the things that Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi padawan, hated ... it was having to beg and plead with someone. Anyone.

It had not mattered with Qui-Gon. Much. He had looked at that tall profile and admiration had filled him at the way the Force wrapped itself around the Master. This was his teacher. His guide, who would lead him to knighthood. Strong, kind, compassionate. Was it a very selfish desire? If so, it must not really cause him any pain. It would not matter that Qui-Gon valued others, and simply trained Obi-Wan for the sake of it. It must not matter that he felt a great deal, over people who were capable of wrecking a havoc they did not really need. Qui-Gon would train him; that should have been enough.

Oh, but it mattered ... it mattered terribly. Qui-Gon's respect was not easily won. And .... yes. His affection. Especially after that debacle with Xanatos. Obi-Wan had wanted to be acknowledged as a Jedi. By someone whose greatness was already acknowledged. It was not out of a desire for greed and power. It was an acknowledgement of the victories he had gained over his self. A Jedi was not to crave such things ... but he could not help the yearning to be regarded as the best, somehow. He had been alone so long - alone and ignored.

I thought I had gained something ... but it seems I have lost it all.

The heart could stand a great many things; even the heart of a Jedi. But not neglect. Never that. He had craved some semblance of acceptance so desperately. He had been willing to grind his own self into the dust for it. And wasn't that what the highest Jedi principles advocated? The absence of self? If so, he had certainly placed everything he was, at Qui-Gon's feet.

And yet, here he was, standing like a fool, in the middle of a wheit field, wondering about whether his master would simply walk into the embrace of his parents, and leave his apprentice to practice katas on his own. Certainly, they were Jedi; Qui-Gon could no more ignore the Force than any other Knight. There was no reason to believe that he would shirk his duties. Because these people - they were family. They were too like him, for him to ignore. And they would certainly expect nothing from him. Amri-Lon Jinn's eyes had radiated such pure affection that his heart had twisted. Nothing that Obi-Wan Kenobi offered could be quite that pure. He was at his master's side for a purpose; he wished to be a Jedi Knight more than anything else. Qui-Gon knew this. Not even his sister's ill feelings could sour away the flood of love that his parents felt. A Jedi was so perpetually involved in a race to erase emotions that such unadulterated affection could not but disturb. Tempt.

With another Master, the question would not even arise. No Jedi, no matter how much the temptation, would choose ties that bound. Even if he were to be tempted, it would remain just that - a temptation. Or at least, there would be the hope that the Jedi would not yield. But Qui-Gon ...

Qui-Gon would. He would always veer towards affection and love. They would always matter. And he would be right. A Jedi must always follow his heart, if that was what he chose. In that Qui-Gon had never faltered. The Force showed him things it would never show others. He listened to something, words that would never fall on the ears of a lesser being like him. Qui-Gon Jinn was wise, compassionate, and with a great capacity to love. And with an extraordinary affinity to listen to the Living Force.

If he decided that his family deserved a place within himself, then he would grant them that. It would not matter that he had an apprentice to train. Obi-Wan Kenobi would once again be relegated to the position of that-which-must-be-endured. As he had always been.

He felt physically sick. Not that he would once again be pushed to the background (well, perhaps it did affect him, a little)... but because of the way it affected him. Of the unnecessary and unwanted thoughts of emotion that intruded. A padawan's duty was to serve his master in every way possible. It was not his place to question. The master knew best; it had been so, and so it would always be. He had taken a vow to trust and respect Qui-Gon's decisions many years ago. It had been a vow he had made to himself; an overpowering surge of devotion and fierce loyalty had prompted him to do it. And ... and affection. An affection for the man who was Qui-Gon, not the master.

He would take refuge in those emotions again. Until he conquered them. He had sworn to serve Qui-Gon as best as he could. To be his devoted student, and to see that he caused no regret to the man who was held to be one of the best teachers in the Order. He would not destroy Qui-Gon's faith in him. He would undergo a great deal to ensure his master's happiness. If it meant that he must vanish underneath a shroud of invisibility, then so be it.

Aren't you being slightly melodramatic over this, padawan Kenobi? questioned a little voice within him. You are assuming too much too soon, aren't you? After all, Qui-Gon has said nothing, betrayed nothing. So sure, are you, that you will relegated to the status of a little jelwe puppy again, only to be seen and not heard? After all, he has only just seen them. He smiled. It was not Qui-Gon's voice; had it been, he would have almost suffered a heart attack, so immersed had he been in his own thoughts.

But it must and would happen. The Force was already warning him of it; that had been the reason for his chaotic and jumbled thoughts. Not for nothing was he strong in the Unifying Force. Storm clouds were gathering …

Guiltily, he remembered that he had completely forgotten his surroundings. He now opened his eyes fully, and stared at the field, breathing deeply, only now completely aware of it. The sun beat down still; even though a stiff breeze still whipped his hair. He realized that his tunics were wet from perspiration; there was no cover from the sun, and he had been walking and walking and walking along the field. Aimlessly, caught up in rumination.

He tested the bond again. There was no sound, not a whisper of anything.

He hadn't really walked so far from the house; only in wide circles around the huge whiet field. In perfect view of anyone who cared to watch. A little shocked at his own preoccupation and chiding himself for it, he sent out a gentle probe to test if he had had an audience as he had plodded along the field.

Certainly he had an audience. How could he not? Six pairs of eyes had been watching him. Six. The brother-sister pair from the side of the house; two younglings, whose identity he was yet to determine; one longing pair from within the house ... and another, from a neighbouring house; again, he could not place the owner.

If he had not known the identity of the younglings before, he would know it now. The younger one, apparently after a great deal of watching and wondering, was sidling up to him, brushing through the wheit field. The older was a good way behind him, making violent signs - presumably to come away. The younger took no notice; he was dressed simply (but well, it seemed, as Obi-Wan caught sight of the shimmer of a brooch on his chest) and his eyes wee wide with apprehension and enthusiasm. He came up to within a few feet of Obi-Wan, and stopped.

They watched each other, eyes raking up and down the other's form; Obi-Wan's gaze was swift in its appraisal, noting and cataloguing the other within moments. The youngster's eyes lingered wonderingly on his tunics, boots, tabards, the braid, and well - everything. Lastly, his eyes rested on the silver cylinder at his waist.

"Is that a ... a light-sword?" he asked suddenly.

Obi-Wan hesitated a moment, before replying. "We call it a light-sabre."

A long, hushed breath followed this pronouncement. "A lightsabre is a Jedi's most valuable possession. You must never lose it, under any circumstance." The boy recited, and his eyes grew even wider, if possible. Out of the corner of his eyes, Obi-Wan noticed the older boy approach more slowly, and concealed a chuckle. Idly, he wondered if the Force had chosen this young one to suddenly impart the Temple's maxims. And where had he learnt this, anyway?

"What's your name?" he asked, instinct prompting to know more about the youngster.

"Kasche." The boy turned to point behind him. "That's Rayfe. My brother. He thinks he's Naboo's Sun. Don't mind him."

Despite himself, Obi-Wan smiled. "Your parents?" He held out his hand, thinking that it was what Qui-Gon would have wished, and the boy looked at it eagerly, almost awed. Then he took it and wrung with great heartiness.

"That's Mama." He pointed at the golden-haired woman who was still gazing back at him, stonily. "And Uncle." The dark-haired man.

So these were Qui-Gon's nephews.

"Can you show me your lightsabre, quick?" Kasche was bouncing on the balls of his feet. "Please? Before that ka- Rayfe comes? Please?"

Obi-Wan began to shake his head. "A light-sabre isn't a toy."

"I know. Please?"

*****

Beyond the fields, 'Setta stood watching, his eyes narrowing as she saw her youngest prance towards the - the Jedi. Exactly like a silly little fawn, sidling up to the object of its affection. Rayfe was going after him, presumably to drag him back. Well, she could see no harm in the boy speaking to the Jedi, she supposed. Kasche had almost gone crazy (and would drive everyone else so, in the process), if she forbade him from actually speaking - speaking! - with one, after he'd watched them in endless holovids. He would never forgive her.

And the Jedi boy seemed a little harmless, actually. Simple and rustic, even, with his cloak and robes. Nothing out of the ordinary. He had been walking round and round that field for more than an hour. She felt some contempt, as her lips edged into a smile. Perturbed and confused, poor little one, undoubtedly. Or perhaps not, judging by the look she'd seen in his eyes within the house. Jedi were, she supposed, very like droids without emotions, taught to act and speak by their elders. This one had probably never seen a family, if what she'd heard from her sons were true. If this what they ere like, so close to adulthood, how did they become the fearsome warriors they were reputed to be? Or diplomats? Or negotiators?

You're being unfair to him, warned her conscience. He cannot possibly be as you portray him.

She shrugged. He's only a boy.

Exeldor looked at her with some surprise. He gazed at her stony countenance, and sighed within himself. Kasche was in for a long lecture. More, if ‘Setta’s stormy mood was anything to go by. Actually, he rather envied the boy's ability to simply approach the Jedi. Would that he too could -

Suddenly, she stiffened. He jerked his head to follow her line of sight, and caught his breath. That boy - Jedi boy - was still standing in the field, talking to Kasche. His movements seemed slow, unhurried. Even hypnotic. Then he moved back and unclipped a shiny cylinder from his belt.

And before their amazed eyes, the cylinder - goddess, what was it? - sprouted a blue, vibrant, bar of light. Light. Dazzling, brilliant. Radiating power. It hummed in his hands. Goddess.

Kasche had stumbled back a pace. Rayfe began to stumble forward.

Exeldor watched, breath caught in his throat, lips slightly parted. Was it - was it what he thought it was? 'Setta was gazing at it, dumbstruck. There was something in her eyes that he couldn't understand - the boy was raising the blade slowly, up in the air. Slowly, slowly, it rose in a beautiful blue arc ... before Kasche's eyes ...

"No!" 'Setta screamed, before wrenching herself from Exeldor, and running madly towards her son.

Poor Obi-Wan...all his insecurities back in a flash. Thank goodness for Kasche. Hero worship does a lot for the ego. wink

Jesetta, Jesetta...must you complicate things unduly? <sigh> I guess she'll learn eventually - probably more than she wants to know about the Jedi in general and Qui-Gon in particular.

Good job, Darth_Cliffie! applause The next post should see some action, hmmm?

Poor Obi-Wan. Will he always think that he comes last with Qui-Gon? Just because Qui-Gon takes care of other life forms doesn't mean that Obi-Wan is pushed to the side. Rather it means that Qui-Gon is sure in his affections and regard, enough to not have to think about it when he deals with everyone else.

At least, Obi-Wan has an audience and rather hero-worshiping at that. Good job.

Hm. If that's what a bit of nagging gets me, I should nag more often! grin Not sure I have a high opinion of Qui's sister at this point. I mean, does she really think that a Jedi would purposely harm an innocent child? And poor Obi!

What a universal truth that is. But Obi-Wan is seeing things from a potentially destructive point of view, thinking it's 'Jedi' to sacrifice everything of himself for Qui-Gon. That really made my heart ache, reading that post. A graceful, realistic handling of Obi-Wan's emotions and his attempts to control them. applause Your posts are always worth the wait. happy

Poor Obi! He is so insecure about himself and his place!
the little one with his hero worship is very cute but his mother in compensation isn't gaining any brownie points with me!

I do hope she and Obi-wan get into a conversation and she can see the future Negotiator in action! Thinking the poor boy is an emotionless droid and that he is going to attack her son?

I so want to see her set straight soon! And more of the kind old lady!

(New reader I am)

This story is simply delightful, and beautifully written. Draws in both the imagination and the emotions. The meeting by the stream was simply captivating.

I also especially loved Obi-Wan's introspection:

The heart could stand a great many things; even the heart of a Jedi. But not neglect. Never that.

This is such a poignant, and spiritually true statement.

He had craved some semblance of acceptance so desperately. He had been willing to grind his own self into the dust for it. And wasn't that what the highest Jedi principles advocated? The absence of self? If so, he had certainly placed everything he was, at Qui-Gon's feet.

How perfectly you describe Obi-Wan's devotion.

Masterful characterization of Qui-Gon.

He felt physically sick. Not that he would once again be pushed to the background (well, perhaps it did affect him, a little)... but because of the way it affected him. ... ... ... He had taken a vow to trust and respect Qui-Gon's decisions many years ago. It had been a vow he had made to himself; an overpowering surge of devotion and fierce loyalty had prompted him to do it. And ... and affection. An affection for the man who was Qui-Gon, not the master.

Again, your description of the anatomy of devotion. Affects the reader deeply.

He would take refuge in those emotions again. Until he conquered them.

Very interesting paradox/irony!

I also really loved the description of how the little boy approached Obi-Wan. That was so sweet. And so true to life. Perhaps you write for the child self of us readers, as well. * Imagines self meeting a real Jedi... blush love *

Beyond the fields, 'Setta stood watching, his eyes narrowing as she saw her youngest prance towards the - the Jedi. Exactly like a silly little fawn, sidling up to the object of its affection.

What a perfect image!

Any chance for more?
