IMPORTANT NOTICE:
This story was scrapped in favour of a reorganized telling, for a variety of reasons. The reorganized version is The Blue Side of the Force: Book I- Complements, and it's trucking right along. So if you want the real meat of the story, head over there. grin

This is the prequel to my current fic, The Blue Side of the Force. I told myself I was going to wait to write this one until Blue Side was finished, but as I've been writing, I've realised that it's necessary to hammer out a lot of details in this installment before I can get into a lot of the meat of the next one. So I'll be updating both of them, though I think this one's going to get a tad bit more attention.

It'll all make sense in the long run. I hope.

Don't think of it so much as a different story as it's... a different section of the same one. In any case, I had fun writing the first part, so I hope you enjoy reading it.

Title: Complementary Colours
Author: DWH
Timeframe: Knights of the Old Republic
Genre: Ask me when it’s done? Eh… drama, some humour, spurts of romance, and moderately high chance of scattered angst. A little bit of everything, I reckon.
Characters: Aiden Star, Leiraya Moran, the usual K1 party members.
Summary: The story of K1. My way. With my OC, because she’s that awesome.
Notes: Umm… C#, A, and G.

Chapter One

Quite unfairly, the alarms sounded in the middle of his nap.

Hoping it was just a dream, Aiden Star rolled over and tried not to hear. Unfortunately, the ship started rocking so violently that he nearly fell out of his bunk. Picking himself up, he resisted the urge to release a string of curses that would make a Corellian spacer blush.

The door to his room opened, and a Republic soldier entered in a slightly less than panicked frenzy. “We’re under attack!” he announced. “Ambushed by the Sith fleet!”

Aiden shook the last of the sleep out of his head and immediately started to grab his gear as he tried to sort out the situation in his head. “Back up the freedom airbus… who are you?”

The soldier blinked at him for a moment, then replied. “I’m Trask Ulgo, your bunkmate. I guess we’ve worked opposite shifts the entire time we’ve been here, so it’s possible we wouldn’t have seen each other. But we’ve got to find Bastila and protect her!”

“Bastila?” Aiden hastily zipped up his uniform and reached for his boots.

“Yes, Bastila.” Trask huffed in slight annoyance. “You know, the commanding officer of this mission? The one we swore to protect? The Sith are here for her, no doubt.”

“No doubt indeed.” Checking his sword, he stood and sprinted towards the door. “Anything else I should know?”

Trask’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I’ve heard you’re one of the best recruits we’ve had in years. Graduated top of your class, an extensive knowledge of alien languages, and all that. Well, now it’s time to put that work into action- we both made an oath, and now’s the time to fulfill it.”

“Well,” he hefted his sword. “Let’s get moving, then.”

Trask punched in the lockdown codes into the door, and it promptly opened. The two of them sprinted down the hall as the communication systems blared.

THIS IS CARTH ONASI. WE ARE UNDER ATTACK. REPEAT, WE ARE UNDER ATTACK. ALL HANDS TO THE BRIDGE!

Trask furiously punched the proper security codes into another door at the end of the hall, and they found themselves in the middle of a firefight. Sith and Republic troopers lined the hall, energy bolts flying furiously.

“Looks like they’ve already boarded.” Trask raised his blaster pistol. “For the Republic!”

By the time they charged, all other Republic soldiers had been killed, and two Sith troopers were left standing. Aiden charged right in with his sword, taking one of the troopers down with a flurry of attacks. Trask took the other with a few well-placed shots.

“Well, that was pleasant.” Aiden wiped his forehead with his sleeve, and bent down to retrieve the medpacs and grenades from the Sith trooper’s dead form.

“I see I’m fighting with the optimist.”

“Better than fighting with the defeatist.”

Trask grinned and motioned him forward. “Can’t disagree with you on that one.”

Aiden followed right on his heels, and joined in the fray as they took down the two soldiers standing on the other side of the door Trask had opened.

“Sithspit.” Trask hauled a body off a footlocker so that they could get the contents. “Never did like moving the bodies.”

“At least we don’t have to look at their faces.” Aiden retrieved the items in the footlocker, finding a second sword for himself.

Trask sighed. “Yeah, their Faceless Army… wonder if it makes them feel more powerful?”

Staring into their golden helmets, Aiden could only shake his head. “Powerful or not, we’ve got to get to the Bridge. Captain Onasi needs us there.”

“Right.” Trask punched the next door open, only to find yet another large firefight. Grenades and blaster bolts flew at people without discretion, hitting enemy and ally alike. Aiden and Trask ran in to join the fight, dispatching all the remaining Sith. Looking around, they saw that, once more, all other Republic soldiers had fallen.

“Dammit,” Trask growled. “Even if we kill every last Sith on here, it still feels like we’re losing this battle.”

They sprinted to the next door, which opened to reveal a heated battle between two Jedi- one light, and one dark. They spun and whirled, blue and red sabers flashing. Both Aiden and Trask were smart enough to know that they weren’t going to do any good in the fight, so they stood back and waited, hoping that the light would prevail, for even the two of them together were unlikely to be able to fight a dark Jedi.

She did, in the end, take him down. Unfortunately, another explosion rocked the ship, and the wall exploded behind her.

“That was one of the Jedi with Bastila,” Trask said through gritted teeth. “We really could have used her help.”

But before Aiden could respond, two more Sith troopers sprinted out and started shooting. One well-placed frag grenade took them both out, and they quickly searched the bodies for useful items. Finding a few more medpacs, they quickly continued down the hallway to the Bridge.

What they expected to find when the opened the door was Captain Onasi. Perhaps Bastila, as well. What they found was a plethora of Sith troopers, in the process of finishing off the last of the Bridge crew. You know, Aiden thought, this is really just starting to get downright irritating. Charging in once more, Trask and Aiden neutralized the Sith threat, and the ship rocked once more as the front half of the Bridge burst into flame.

“These Sith sure know how to throw a party.” Aiden snorted. “They throw in the fireworks show for free.”

“I’ll show them fireworks.” Trask checked the charge on his blasters. “Attack my commanding officer? I don’t think so.”

They quickly pushed ahead, finding the only other door out of the Bridge. It led to a room with two doors out. Trask started fiddling with the lock on the far door, but Aiden couldn’t help but have a bad feeling about it. “Trask…”

The door whirred open, revealing a dark Jedi. He stood menacingly at the end of the corridor, and strode forward confidently as he ignited his crimson saber.

“It’s a dark Jedi!” Trask yelled. “You go ahead and find the Captain- I’ll hold him off!”

“Trask, you don’t stand a chance-"

“Go!” Trask snarled, and shut the door behind him.

You’re a damned fool, Trask Ulgo. Aiden sighed. And for that, I owe you my life. May the Force be with you, soldier. Wasting no more time, he went through the door to the starboard section of the ship. Almost immediately, his personal communicator started blinking. He picked it up and answered. “Ensign Star.”

“This is Carth Onasi. I’m tracking you through your personal communicator. You are the last remaining soldier aboard the Endar Spire. There’s one more escape pod left, and there’s room for both of us if you can get here. Bastila’s pod has already gone, so the sooner we can leave, the better.”

“Copy that.” Aiden hooked his communicator back to his belt and softly treaded down the corridor. There was a lone Sith trooper around the corner, who he managed to sneak up on and take down with a quick attack. Now, if only the rest of them will be so easy to fool…

Rounding the corner, Aiden entered the next room, greeted by yet two more Sith troopers. By this time, taking them down was practically second nature. Checking the footlocker for supplies, he found several computer spikes and repair parts. His communicator blinked again, and he quickly reached down to answer. “Yeah?”

“Be careful- there’s a large crowd of Sith troopers on the other side of the door you’re standing by. You could try to slice the terminal and see what you can do, or repair the patrol ‘droid there.”

“Thanks for the heads up. I’ll see what I can do.”

“Just get yourself over here in one piece.”

“I copy that, sir.” Aiden returned the communicator to his belt, and quickly examined his options. Deciding on the terminal, he started to punch in codes, bringing up the controls for the adjacent room. Finding the power conduit controls, he managed to overload it so that it lightly toasted all of the soldiers in the room. Checking the security cam to make sure nobody was left, he opened the door and sprinted through the room. Opening the door on the other side, he finally found himself face to face with Carth Onasi.

“You made it! And just in time, too. Like I said, there’s one escape pod left, and Bastila’s on the surface. We’ll have to find her once we’re down there, but right now we have to get out of here.” Carth motioned for him to climb into the pod first. Aiden hopped in, and Carth squeezed in after. It was a bit of a tight squeeze, but it could be worse. Carth closed the door and punched in the launch sequence, and the pod shot out of the Endar Spire.

They launched none too soon, as the ship exploded mere minutes after their pod left. They streaked down to the surface of Taris, crashing spectacularly into the Upper City. Being that it was the early day and nobody really was about, Carth was able to drag his now unconscious podmate from the crash site, and into a nearby abandoned apartment before Sith troops were able to come investigate.

He didn’t look good, and neither did the situation. But at least, for the time being, they were safe.

And thus I have embarked on another loooong story project. But hopefully it'll make the second story make more sense. Kids, never start in the middle of a story. tongue

My name is in this FIC!

Do you know how absolutely mortified I was when someone with my character's name joined the boards? tongue Too late to change it, though, he's mentioned in too many places. Even though I realised rather belatedly that my two main in-game protaganists are Aiden and Arden. Eep. At least they don't really overlap....

Anyhow, I'm glad you guys like it, and I hope to have the next part up soon. I've been composing it in my head over the last two days, but I've had some college friends up to visit, and I only had my little blue "idea" notebook with me when we were amusement parking yesterday. But I did get a picture of me looking through it on one of the rollercoasters. dancing

Off to write more stuff... grin

Woo! Updateage! This is kinda short-ish, but it's exposition. Ahh, exposition...

Chapter Two

A kaleidoscope of colours swirled through his dreams.

Challengers. They came in the form of emerald, silver, aubergine, and orange. Treading softly, they sought to overcome the blue.

The orange became white hot, overshadowing the other colours. Except for the blue. The blue turned to ice in response. They paced around each other, each hoping to snuff out the other.

Perfect complements.

* * *

Aiden cracked his eyes open, seeing only a dull grey ceiling. It was a bad dream, that was all… he rubbed his head and sat up, trying to remember where he was and how he got there. He looked around, trying to pull the room into focus. His eyes fixed on an orange blur, which slowly coalesced into the form of Carth Onasi.

Right. Endar Spire. So he clearly wasn’t on the ship anymore, but he didn’t know exactly where he was.

“So you’re finally awake,” Carth gave a small smile. “You were thrashing about in your sleep a lot there- you must’ve been having one hell of a nightmare. I was wondering if you were ever going to wake up.”

You and me both, Aiden thought. Out loud, he said, “What happened?”

“The Sith attacked the Endar Spire, no doubt looking for Bastila. The ship was destroyed, we made it out on the last escape pod. We crashed into the surface of the upper city of Taris. You were unconscious from the impact, and I managed to drag you out of there before the Sith showed up to investigate. These apartments weren’t far, and this one looks like it’s been abandoned for a while. We should be safe here… for now.” He scratched his head. “But we need to find Bastila- the fate of the Republic could depend upon it.”

Trask's voice echoed in his mind.Bastila… You know, our commanding officer? The one we swore to protect? Aiden shook his head. Listening to ghosts wasn’t going to help the situation. “How could anyone, even a Jedi, be so important?”

Carth seemed to stifle a laugh, as if the question couldn’t possibly be serious. “Bastila has a special ability called Battle Meditation- it allows her to bolster the will of her allies, and sap that of the opponents. It might not seem like much, but quite often, that’s all it takes to tip the tide of a battle.”

“Handy power, that…” Aiden paused to consider. “So because she has this spiffed-up Force power, the Sith decide to blow us to bits.”

“Well, they are the Sith.” Carth shrugged. “They’ve never been terribly subtle. At least, not since Malak took over.”

“You mean they were at least sneaky before?”

“I guess you had to serve with Revan and Malak to understand them. I served under them in the Mandalorian Wars. Revan was an amazing tactician.”

Aiden tilted his head in slight confusion. “Hold up. You served under Revan and Malak? But I thought they were the bad guys.”

Carth seemed to stiffen a little at this mention, but he shrugged it off. “Revan and Malak were Jedi before the outset of the Mandalorian Wars. Hell, they were the only reason the Republic won. They were heroes.”

This did not jive with what little Aiden knew of the leaders of the Sith Empire. “And then they just… turned?”

“I don’t know what happened.” He shook his head sadly. “After the war’s end, they went off into the Unknown Regions, supposedly to chase down the remnants of the Mandalorian forces. When they came back, they had changed, and dragged half the Republic forces with them. And that’s how we got into the mess we’re in now.”

“So what happened to Revan- you refer to him in the past-tense.”

“Revan was killed by a Jedi strike team- led by Bastila, actually. Of course, I hear Malak helped speed the process. But Revan deserved to die for what he did, as does Malak.” Carth clenched his jaw. “And if we lose Bastila, I don’t know if that’s going to happen.”

Aiden considered probing further on this subject, but Carth didn’t look to be in the mood for discussing it any further. He decided it would be best to change the subject. “So… where are we, anyway?”

“This is the upper city of Taris. It is, unfortunately, under Sith quarantine right now, so we’re going to have to be careful.” He sighed. “Fortunately, they’re going to be looking for Jedi, not a couple of grunts like us.”

“Maybe we should find disguises, anyway.”

Carth looked at him skeptically. “Are you a costumer in your spare time? Maybe we can get some different armour, but I doubt we’ll have the resources for elaborate disguises.”

“It was just a thought.”

Carth grinned. “Heh. Well, I’ve heard worse. Anyway, the upper city seems to be pretty nice. I’ve done some scouting around, and gotten some information. The lower city appears to be overrun by swoop gangs, caught up in some sort of gang war. The undercity is even worse, though I suppose since it’s where they send their criminals, it ought to be.”

“So we could, potentially, have a rather joyous descent in our future.”

“Let’s hope not, though I have a feeling we’ll end up down there anyway. It’d be just our luck.”

“Well,” Aiden fished into his pack and pulled out a combat suit he had salvaged on the Endar Spire. “The sooner we leave, the sooner we can find Bastila.”

Carth checked the charge on his blaster and nodded. “Like I said, we’ll have to be careful.”

Aiden shrugged easily, and grinned. “Am I ever anything else?”

Carth could only sigh inwardly and think, for the sake of the mission, let’s hope so…

Thanks guys, glad you're still enjoying. Heck, I'm just glad to have readers. tongue And now, since I was motivated, I have yet another chapter for you!

Chapter Three

Aiden liked to think there was downtime between disasters. Places where you could catch your breath, and be generally non-stressed about things, even if only for a little while. He certainly thought he should be able to step out of doors without being shot at. This, however, did not seem to be the natural order of things.

Standing a meter away from their apartment door was a knot of aliens and a Sith Captain with two war ‘droids. He was gesticulating quite angrily at the Duros standing there, and they were being quite indignant in return.

“[Why do you Sith insist on incessantly searching our apartments? Your patrol was in here just last week!]”

The Captain’s upper lip curled into a sneer. “Alien scum.” He motioned to his ‘droids, and they promptly shot the dissenting party down. “That’s how we Sith deal with your lot,” he spat contemptuously. Quickly surveying the area, he saw Aiden and Carth staring at him. A quick analysis of the situation, mainly that no Tarisian locals or Sith troopers would be living in the alien apartment complex, led him to an unfortunately correct conclusion.

“Humans living with aliens? They’re Republic fugitives! Blast them!” He immediately opened fire, his war ‘droids following suit. Aiden immediately jumped into the fray, sword flashing as it swiftly cut through the air- and the ‘droids. Carth wasted no time in pulling his blaster from its holster and putting several well-placed shots into both the ‘droids and the Captain. It was, all told, a short row. Aiden, however, couldn’t help but feel that they’d just caused unnecessary trouble.

“[Thank you for the assistance,]” the remaining Duro gasped, holding his side where he’d been shot.

“Are you going to be all right?” Aiden looked pointedly at the wound.

“[I will be fine- though I appreciate the thought. My brother here should not have been so cheeky with the troopers.]”

He surveyed the bodies laying on the floor, and scratched his head. “Aren’t these bodies going to be found by another patrol?”

“[Do not worry,]” the Duro assured him. “[I will drag the bodies off somewhere else, where it will look like an accidental killing. It will at least throw the Sith off the trail for some time. Again, I thank you for your assistance.]” He ambled off to find a repulsor-cart, leaving Aiden and Carth standing in the hallway.

“I think it would be smart to leave the apartment complex,” observed Aiden.

“I’m not going to argue that for one second,” Carth replied.

They made short business of getting to the exit of the compound, waving off a salesman trying to sell his energy shields as they passed. As they exited, Aiden had his first glimpse of upper Taris.

It was beautiful in its own way, he supposed. The tops of the towers gleamed in the late afternoon sun, reflecting the blue and orange in the sky. Blue and orange… like in my dream…

Shaking off such thoughts, he continued his observations. It was a very clean city, with very well-kept people wandering about. Sith troopers in their gleaming gold armour patrolled the open, airy walkways, and protocol ‘droids meandered down the paths, giving information to any who seemed to need it, and a few who didn’t. It smelled of speeder fuel and smoke, the later he presumed came from the wreckage of an escape pod he saw sitting at the end of the walkway. That was probably ours… from the shape it’s in now, we really are lucky we both made it out alive.

It was, all in all, a nice enough city, if one liked cities. Aiden had been raised on Deralia, a largely oceanic world in the Outer Rim, and the concept of such a city was an entirely foreign one. In his mind, a place could not be home if it didn’t contain some sort of large body of water, and he wasn’t certain anyone was going to find the surface of Taris any time soon. However, it was his place of residence until either the Sith quarantine lifted, or they found some way to blast out of the place, preferably with Bastila in tow.

Venturing forth, Aiden tried not to look too much like a tourist. This mostly involved pretending he knew exactly where he was going, even though he hadn’t the foggiest idea where anything was. Deciding that going straight was his best option, he and Carth made their way around a massive floating sculpture that looked suspiciously like durasteel macaroni, and through a dividing walkway.

“So,” Aiden said casually over his shoulder, “What’s your story?”

Carth looked somewhat shocked for a moment, it seemed as though nobody had bothered to ask him that question in a very long time. Whether it was because everybody knew him already, or that he just didn’t talk to people, Aiden didn’t know. But the shock wore off very quickly, and he answered. “Well, I’ve been a star-pilot for the Republic for a lot of years now… seen more than my share of war. I fought in the Mandalorian Wars before this one… but these Sith are worse than the Mandalorians ever were.” He sighed and shook his head. “I’ve never seen anything like it. Malak is just intent on bombing everyone into submission. My… my homeworld was one of the first to fall to Malak’s fleet. I was a part of the task force sent to help, but we arrived too late.”

“You say that like it’s your fault, somehow.”

He appeared stung by this statement. “I- it shouldn’t be my fault, I did all I could. I did my duty. I didn’t fail them, I… I didn’t.”

Aiden decided to back off on the subject. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you.”

Carth shook his head to clear it, and waved his hand somewhat distractedly. “It’s- don’t worry. I mean, I- I must not be making much sense right now. It’s just that I’m not used to talking about my past all that much.” He paused for a moment. “At all, really.” His eyes seemed to focus on something very distant for a moment, then he snapped back into the present. “I’m used to taking action, and focusing on the task at hand. So I suggest that’s what we do.”

Aiden could only nod and say, “Okay, let’s get moving.”

There was an awkward silence as they strode down the walkway towards some sort of establishment, but Carth decided to break the silence. “So… do you have a story?”

Slightly startled, but glad his companion was willing to make conversation, he replied. “Nothing highly exciting, I must confess. Unless you’re really fond of the water.” Aiden smiled, thinking of home. “Deralia’s beautiful, and dangerous if you don’t know how to take care of yourself, which some people seem to have difficulty with. You’d think, living on an oceanic world, they’d get it after a while. But some people are just stupid, I guess.”

Carth chuckled. “Stupid, are they?”

“Well, when you have to rescue the same person twice in the same day for doing the same thing… yeah, I think you get to call them stupid.” Aiden shrugged and grinned. “Working as a Watchman is interesting work, but the people tend to grate on you after a while.”

“What’s a Watchman?”

“Water safety personnel- we patrol the oceans, make sure nobody does anything stupid, and save them whenever they invariably do.” He rolled his eyes. “It’s a living, but it makes you a bit of a cynic.”

At this, they arrived at the door to what appeared to be a Cantina. Upon entering, they found themselves in a room crowded with card players, all trying to best each other at Pazaak. There were noises of triumph and discontent from all corners, and it was all they could do to squeeze through to the main lounge of the cantina. A survey of the patrons revealed that it was largely inhabited by the locals, though offworlders obviously stranded by the quarantine could be seen scattered throughout the crowd. Aiden tried to remain inconspicuous, which was difficult so long as he had a vibroblade hanging from his belt, but there was no way he was going to be caught unarmed. The two of them made an interesting pair, maneuvering through the crowds, trying to figure out what, exactly, was going on. Carth seemed unable to shake the appearance of being a soldier, as his hand always rested lightly on the grip of his blaster pistol, and his suspicious eyes were constantly sweeping the premises. Not to mention the bright orange, probably Republic-issue jacket that didn’t do anything to conceal him. Fortunately, it wasn’t the standard uniform, but Aiden would feel a lot better once he had better, or really any armour for Carth.

“My friend,” he said, clapping Carth on the shoulder, “I think it’s time for us to stop looking like tourists for at least a short while.”

Carth raised an eyebrow. “And how are we going to do that?”

“We’re going to sit down and have a drink. Look like we came here to do something other than examine the structural integrity of the floors.” Aiden nudged Carth towards an empty table. “Besides, you could probably use a drink.”

“You speaking for me, or for yourself?” Carth gave a half-grin. “Well, a drink probably wouldn’t hurt- just watch out for the ale, I hear it’s got a real kick to it.”

Aiden smirked. If there was one thing he could do, it was hold his alcohol. Still, he’d go easy, just to play it safe. “All right, we’ll do Bastila no good if we’re drunk while trying to find her.”

Sitting back, they could take a moment to relax and listen to the music. Their waiter was prompt, and brought them chilled bottles of ale minutes after they had ordered them. Surrounding patrons griped about how the band hadn’t changed since the quarantine was instated, but Aiden found it relaxing, and hadn’t been listening to it long enough to be annoyed by the mere hint of one of their melodies.

Taking a long, slow sip of ale, Aiden sighed inwardly. And I’d better not be here long enough to be annoyed, either.

He supposed he didn’t need to worry, the odds of their staying on the upper levels of Taris were pretty low. All the same, he hoped the road to finding Bastila would not be a terribly long one.

Oh, I promise I have a few surprises planned. happy And keep in mind that at least one person reading this isn't familiar with the game, so I'll take the time to declare this thread spoiler-free from this point on (and extra brownie points from the author if you edit out the one spoiler you put in there, which was kinda massive). Just to keep up the suspense, eh? wink
