Trying to get my muse back on track...

Part III

When Obi-Wan awoke the next day, the Coruscant sun shone brightly through the transparisteel embrasures, touching upon as many objects in his tiny room as possible. His ships glinted, as did the shelves, and even the clasps on his small bag, in which he had made preliminary preparations to pack.

He sat up slowly, feeling rather refreshed, but knowing that he had no right to feel so. Something was wrong, he thought, as he stared up at the ceiling and his familiar quarters. The sun, the sky-lanes, the bright—

His heart sank and a sick feeling roiled in his stomach, as a heavy weight settled down in it suddenly. I am leaving the Temple. Forever.

He felt almost physically sick and had to stand up, wanting to rush to the refresher. Almost as soon as he had stood up and taken a step from his bed, his mind remembered the events of the night before.

He sat down abruptly.

Had Qui-Gon Jinn truly visited him last night? Had his ghostly form truly appeared? Had he truly spoken to him, a twelve year old, unchosen initiate, soon to be dismissed to the Agricorps?

And had he truly asked Obi-Wan to go to—to—what was that planet again? Yes, Tatooine.

He puzzled about this for a few moments. It still seemed remarkably otherworldy—well, it was—to be asked by a dead Jedi master to visit a world he wasn’t even familiar with.

He darted a swift look at his chronometer. There was still time for first meal. In the meantime…

He dressed swiftly, trying desperately to ignore the depression that seemed ready to take over his mind at the slightest excuse. I’m leaving. I’m leaving. I’m leaving. I’m leaving my home.

He shuddered, leaning heavily on the wall. Then, he clipped his light-sabre to his belt, opened the door and stood outside quietly, for a moment. Then, he walked towards the star map room.

Among all the rooms at the Temple, this was his favourite. He had spent many hours here, dreaming of the possibility of going to obscure and unknown planets on missions. There would be many worlds out there, each with its own problems – Force knew there had to be happy worlds as well, but he always preferred to think of the ones overrun with wars, and faction-fights, droughts, earthquakes and terrorist attacks. It made it easier for him to envision himself as a Jedi knight, always wishing to help. One was always listening to stories of such missions, anyway.

He would help people. More than people, he would help anyone—anything—that wanted it. Even those who wanted it, but were too proud to ask him of it. Talk to Princes and Kings and dine with Ambassadors. But always, always he would help the people, the sentients of the system. He would be a Jedi, the stuff of which legends were made. And sometimes, when his fantasies became too involved, he would try to forcibly pull out the parts in his fantasies were everyone praised him for all the good he did –Jedi did not act out of their own need to earn praise—and would always strive to guard peace. Really.

And so he had sat in this room, where the velvety blue ceiling curved above him in a dome. The only light came from the stars and planets that surrounded him, pinpricks against the blue in all the glowing colours of the spectrum. He had only to reach out a hand and touch a planet for a hologram to appear, detailing its physical properties, its surrounding satellites, and its form of government.

He pressed the control buttons and entered the dark precincts, his boots sinking into the soft mattress. He knelt in the middle, flicking his wrist to activate the room. Fortunately, no one else was occupying the room at the moment – it was too early in the morning. Chances are that a Master would have been within, occupied with some research. That had happened, once or twice, and he had always waited respectfully, until said master finished his business.

I’m never going to see this room again.

He swallowed a lump that had appeared from nowhere, and brushed stinging eyes.

He searched around for the planet he had heard in his dreams—he was beginning to think it had been a dream—for the name of it was unfamiliar. He guessed that it was probably not the Core Worlds, and though he had been made to learn as much as he humanly could about the galaxy’s numerous systems, the one he had heard about did not seem to have been part of his current curriculum. He trailed his hand over the planets, watching them light up, and discovering what he already knew: Alderaan, Cassidia, Noreli, Edlara, Chandrila, Corellia, with its strange history of having been moved from elsewhere…

None of them was what he was searching for … which, in a way, was something he had expected.

“Look for what is not seen, are you?” came a hoarse, raspy voice, and he jumped.

“Master Yoda,” he breathed, and sank to his knees again. How had the oldest Jedi master appeared here – and what for?

“I beg pardon if I am disturbing—” he began, only to cut short.

“Disturbed nothing, you have,” said Master Yoda, tapping his gimmer stick for emphasis. Then, his voice seemed to smoothen – rather surprisingly. “Something you wish for, is there?”

Considering the circumstances, the question was ironic, Obi-Wan thought. His mind seemed to be caught in turmoil, surrounding by a fogginess he could not subdue. It went against all his training to be caught in confusion—he abhorred it. And knew that the Master would sense it, and chastise him for it.

“I’m leaving… I’m leaving for Bandomeer,” he managed to say at last. “For the Agricorps.”

There was silence. He heard the faints rustle of robes as the master walked away from him. “Hmm.”

Perhaps he would get away without revealing what he had been here for.

“I… was going to ask my leave of you, my Master.”

It was a most formal sentence, and it seemed proper to utter it. Considering the tiniest spark of hope, and a question that reared its head: Master Yoda did not have a padawan at the present time… why did he not choose one?

“Not my time it is, to choose,” came the sudden answer, and he jumped again, suddenly tightening hs shielding.

“Not to worry, youngling.” Claws scratched the floor again, and he raised his head, abashed, his cheeks awash with embarrassment. “Come to wish you well, I did. Know I do, of your love of this room.”

Love. The word was spoken ordinarily, without any special intonation; yet it seemed to Obi-Wan that the simple words contained everything he wished to say, or not say.

I do not wish to leave.

Perhaps he need not get away without knowing about Tatooine. Perhaps he could still learn, before he left, today ...

A part of his mind whispered that this was too great a risk.

“I wanted to know the location of…” he faltered, and stopped.

“Lost a planet have you, young Kenobi?” came the amused question again, and he blinked. “How embarrassing, how embarrassing!”

“I wished to know where Tatooine is.” The words came out in a rush, echoing in the room.

The cackle stopped. “Tatooine?” There was a weighty pause. “Why Tatooine, youngling?”

He lowered his head. How did one explain… what could not be explained?

“To Bandomeer, you are leaving.”

He nodded again, clenching his fists as he heard the name.

“Why wish to know where Tatooine is, you do?”

A Force ghost asked me to.

“I have heard much about it,” he recited glibly, wondering where he had found the ease to say the words. “It—it isn’t part of the Core, is it?” I have to know where it is.

“Hmph.” Master Yoda appeared to scrutinize him deeply, his large eyes seeming to bore into his very soul. Then, he tapped his way to a corner of the room and touched a claw…and small system shot up into the light.

“Tatooine, here it is.”

Obi-Wan blinked at the statistics that winked at him: 43000 light years away from Coruscant, a population of 200,000, two suns, three moons, part of the Arkanis System, arid desert…

43,000 light years?

His lips parted almost despite himself. How was he going to travel half that distance?

If he was ever going to go to Tatooine, that is. He was not. He was to leave for Bandomeer, where it was reported were mines of ionite and mining corporations and where he would learn to tend plants and use herbicides and pull weeds and water—

“It must take more than a moon to get there,” he mumbled.

“If go there, you must, a long time it would take, yes.” Came the hoarse answer. “Plans you have of travelling to the Outer Rim, do you?”

He shook his head. That, at least, was true. He had no wish to travel around the Outer Rim, anyway. What was there to see, there? Wastelands covered with sand? Did anyone even live there? Common sense indicated that they did, but his own inexperience shied away from accepting it.

“I will learn to accept my fate, Master,” he said, bowing again. And accept he would, like a Jedi that he was. That he had hoped to be. Even if he were condemned to Bandomeer.

And his answer was worthy of the best diplomats. There was no hint in it, he was sure, of what his plans were. My plans? What plans?

“A Jedi you are, Obi-Wan.” A claw descended on his forehand, touching it gently. He felt a rush of emotion at the gentleness and reigned himself, even though his lips trembled. “Bandomeer, Coruscant - decide what you are, they will not. Your choices, make you, they will.”

And what will Tatooine make me?

He tore off the thought forcibly from his head. He would go to Bandomeer. He would. It had been decided. It was written; it was his destiny to be an Agricorps worker. He would make his Masters proud. He would not think of his failure. He would not—

Not think of the Master who had appeared before him, last night. Who had said to him, sorrowfully, that he had been the only one to hear him. Who had asked him, as one Jedi, to another, to go to Tatooine. And who had not mentioned what he must go there for.

The yearning in Master Jinn’s eyes. They appeared in his mind’s eyes still. Deep, solemn, Shimmering.

Go, they said. Go.

Please.

He sighed and stood up, hoping his shields had held, feeling a tendril of doubt. “I ask your blessings, master.”

“Walk in the Light, young Obi-Wan.” Master Yoda raised his hand in dismissal.

He nodded. “Yes, master.” He began to walk towards the entrance.

“Remember that as long as there is life, there is still hope.”

He stopped as though shot. He turned back to the master, his lips moving. Then, he bowed again and walked out of the room quickly.

He leant against a smooth wall, a great deal of distance from the map room, shuddering. Then he broke into huge, heaving sobs.

How do I explain to you how much I love this story? There are not words to say. I loved that Obi-Wan still held hope that Yoda would choose him and yet Yoda did not and he still tried to be a Jedi. Even when his heart was breaking. Loved that Yoda couldn't figure out why he wanted to go to Tatooine and yet he must realize something is up. Why else would a kid bound for Bandomeer want to know about Tatooine?

Great job. I can't figure out where you are going with this but it's been a heck of a ride so far...

More please!

So sad; Obi-Wan still trying to be a Jedi when he's about to leave the place, and the last part just did it...I'm crying again.

I still can't figure out why Qui-Gon would want Obi-Wan to go to Tatooine. Something tells me it might have something to do with the prophecy, but the little brat isn't even born yet...

Poor poor Obi-Wan. You described his sad situation so well. That his thoughts keep moving between his own loss and Qui-Gon's plea. I loved the little AOTC reference love and this part:

If he was ever going to go to Tatooine, that is. He was not. He was to leave for Bandomeer, where it was reported were mines of ionite and mining corporations and where he would learn to tend plants and use herbicides and pull weeds and water—

“It must take more than a moon to get there,” he mumbled.

I really liked that because it seemed like he was starting to let it sink in what he was going to be doing on Bandomeer, and it made him swerve back to Tatooine again. It was just great. applause Can't wait for your next update, on any story. grin
