Kimei found Dat helping the Theni lay explosives. “What’s going on?”
Dat looked up and then back at his work. “Pirates have locked themselves in the warehouse and refuse to come out. It they continue to do so, we’re going to blow them up. Crude, but effective justice. Did you find Scavenge?”
She nodded. “I-I killed him.”
Dat looked up, startled. So did several of the Theni. She continued. “Apparently, Scavenge had latent Force abilities. He was trying to kill me.” As she said this, she clipped her lightsaber back onto her belt. A Theni stood. “Are you a Jedi?” Kimei nodded. “A Padawan, anyway.”
He looked at her thoughtfully, then went back to placing explosives. After several minutes, the Theni stood and left.
Kimei looked at Dat. “I’m sorry.”
His eyes were sad. “It’s okay. I know it was needed, and I never liked him, but..”
“But he was still your dodava.”
Dat nodded. “Well, these are laid. I think that we could probably go check on Grit now.”
Kimei was about to agree when she felt a nudge from the Force. Looking over her shoulder, she saw one of the slavers was at the detonator of the explosives, setting it off. She grabbed Dat’s hand. “Run!”
*****
Kimei and Dat ran for their lives. They heard the slaver finish with the detonator and the beeping that indicated a countdown start.
They had barely made it to the door when the explosion knocked them forward, Dat taking the brunt of it. His body twisted in the air, like someone had him on an invisible stick and was turning him so that he would burn evenly. Flames engulfed him, and Kimei barely had time to put up a Force shield before they surrounded her too.

Mystralgurl! It's me. I'm so sorry to have missed so many posts. I've not been well and around the boards only occasionally. Tonight I caught up with your story, though!
Kimei just can't find any peace, can she? On the other hand, she has strength when she needs it!
Keep writing!

Aw! I missed you oldj! Thanks for posting, and I hope you feel better. And maybe Kimei will find peace at some point... Maybe. But yes, she is strong because of not having peace yet.

Kimei ran beside the hoverbed that Dat was laying on. His whole body was covered with burns, bright red and raw, already starting to puff up. His eyes met her, nearly delirious with pain, despite the painkillers already in his bloodstream.
Two medics were running beside it too. “Is he going to make it?” Kimei asked. The medics looked grim. “He may not even make it through a bacta treatment.” They stopped, entering the medbay. A medic grabbed her arm. “You can’t go any further than this. You can see him when he comes out.”
Kimei nodded, and swiftly leaned down to kiss him softly. Then he was gone out of her sight.
“Kimei!” Ashinta came running up, Drelinna right behind her. “Are you hurt? What did you do?!”
Kimei gave her master a weak smile. “I found that slavers ring you were talking about. It’s gone now.”
A medic came up to Kimei. “Miss, I need you to come with me. You’re hurt, and need medical attention.”
She nodded, and waved at her master. “I’ll be fine, Master.”
*****
Kimei lay back on the bed as a med droid took some of her blood. “Why are you doing that?”
The droid turned to her. “Harou has limited technology. Our bacta treatments do not always work, and sometimes we must revert to the older treatment of flash-cloning organs. We need a sample of your DNA to do that.”
She tried to process that, but the droid must have given her something, because she felt as if she was wrapped in a fuzzy cloud, and she slowly fell into the dark.
*****
Kimei slowly awoke, pushing the fuzziness away from her mind, trying to focus on where she was.
Her eyes opened and she saw a woman standing next to a window, in a white room. Bit by bit she remembered where she must be, and she took a careful count of how she was feeling before she sat up.
The woman turned around, and Kimei noted the kind eyes, and the silent face.
“Hello.” Kimei said cautiously. “Who are you?”
The woman smiled slightly. “My name is Ra’ama.”
“Talia.” Kimei bowed as best as she could while still sitting.
Talia Ra’ama inclined her head. “No need for formalities. Not with family.”
“I-I’m not sure I understand.” Kimei stammered.
The woman sat down carefully. “The blood test to flash clone your organs if necessary. Sometimes, in very rare cases, even flash cloning doesn’t take, especially if the organ being cloned had something wrong with it originally that was cured by bacta. So DNA is checked against all other DNA of Harou citizens in case an organ transplant is needed.”
Kimei blinked. “Are you saying that I’m related to you? That I’m part of the ruling family?”
Ra’ama nodded. “This is a very big relief to myself and will be to the rest of Harou when we announce the fact that an heir has been found.”
“I don’t think you understand. I’m a Jedi. When we are selected to train at the Jedi Temple, all claims to anything are revoked. I cannot inherit the rule of Harou. You’ll have to find another heir.”
“There is no other Yria.” Ra’ama said gently. “I had a sister once, and she was taken in a fire. I am unable to bear children. Somehow, you are related to me, although I cannot understand it. As far as I can tell, the gods have preserved my lineage for another generation. They will provide a way for you to be the next Talia.”
Kimei shook her head. “I can’t. And you shouldn’t announce to your people that you’ve found an heir, when I cannot serve the people of Harou in any way aside from how I am serving them now. I’m a Jedi, and that’s all I am.”
Ra’ama inclined her head again. “I will trust in the gods that you will return in time to rule Harou. In the meantime, you may continue in any way you wish. I will pray for you.”
Talia Ra’ama left.

Okay, this post was long for me. But this marks that there are about two posts left before the end of the story. I am hoping to be able to work on A Soul's Reason over my Christmas break so that I can start posting it in January, but DRL is always lurking in the shadows....

No problem, Karen. I'm almost done with this story (I forgot my cd...) and then I have to figure out a way to start writing A Soul's Reason...

Kimei sat in stunned silence. The idea that she was an heir to a planet was not something she could wrap her mind around easily.
So she stood and walked out of the room to go see how Dat was doing.
*****
Dat lay on a bed, in a room much like the one Kimei had been in. His breath was still not coming steadily, but it was improved over what it had been an hour before.
Kimei just sat, watching him. She did not have the ability to heal someone aside from herself. Other Jedi could, although not all. It was easiest to heal oneself, because one could know ones body inside and out. Other beings were harder, even if one knew them. Something about not being in their body day in and day out.
Dat’s eyes opened. “Kimei. I thought I heard you.”
She smiled at him. “I’ve been here awhile. They released me hours ago.”
“You look none the worse for flying out of an exploding building.”
“I feel fine. The Theni in the building were not so lucky. Every single one of them died. But the slavers did too. I don’t know if that makes up for it at all.”
“Death never makes up for death.” Dat rasped. “But it does help my frustration slightly.”
“Dat?” Kimei asked.
“What?”
“What is an yria?”
Dat looked at her, confused. “The heir to rule Harou. Both male and female. Why?”
Kimei shrugged. “I must have heard the word somewhere. But I had been wondering. Thank you.”
There was silence for a few minutes, and then Dat spoke again.
“The healers…”
Kimei looked down at her hands. “The healers what?” she asked carefully.
“They tell me I may never walk again.”
Her eyes flew up to his. “What?”
He looked away. “I may never walk, I’ll always have scars, and I’ll never be able to procreate.”
“Dat…” Kimei searched for words to comfort, and found none. What can you say to someone who has lost everything that mattered to them?
“It’s okay, Kimei. I knew I could never have you anyway.”
She looked up at him, startled, and her mouth opened in surprise.
He smirked a little, looking down at the skin on his hands that had healed in the bacta, but had a tell-tale smudginess about them that spoke of deep burns that would never heal. “I said I wanted to be your eshtomi. That was what you needed. I didn’t tell you that I had fallen in love with you, that I wanted more. For us to be… together. You’re a Jedi, it was an impossible dream.”
Her hand reached out and touched his chin. He was still handsome, and his eyes were kind and full of pain. “Dat… I know I could never be with you. I am a Jedi. But you have helped me with my scars. I know it’s selfish of me, and I am not in love with you. But you are my eshtomi. And a little more than any eshtomi could ever be.”
Kimei leaned forward and kissed him, a goodbye kiss, and their tears mixed together, for what could never have been.
*****
Drelinna had already left for the Jedi Temple, having been called by the Council to give a full report. Ashinta stayed with Kimei long enough for the two of them to wrap up any loose ends with the mission and do some sightseeing on the world that was home to the two of them.
Their bags were stowed in the ship, and Ashinta was sitting in the pilot’s seat. Kimei was taking one last look at the planet she was heir to, if she had not been a Jedi.
There, at the bottom of the ramp, stood her dodava.
Kimei waved shyly. Dat was there, in a hoverchair. He might be able to walk again in time. He smiled at her, and waved back. Grit and Flight stood together, holding hands. Aziri and Catine were standing close together. Dat was surrounded by his, by their dodava. He would not be alone.
He would have friends, family. All had been offered the chance to attend school, part of a new program Talia Ra’ama had introduced for the Midelt part of Aparecida. Kimei was happy for him.
And yet, she felt sad.
THE END

*sigh*
Okay, everybody, that's the end. (in case you didn't read the last two words of the last post)
At least, for that story.
Now I really have to get around to writing A Soul's Reason.
Hope you all enjoyed it!

Congratulations on finishing A Soul's Journey, Mystralgurl!! An excellent achievement!
I really enjoyed the twists and turns in your last two posts, and I love an ending with more questions than answers!
May DRL and DRB stay out of the way so you can write A Soul's Reason soon.

Aw... you're so sweet! What is DRB though?
Unfortunately, I was tackle-stabbed by DRL, and my computer is being annoying again, and my semester is starting, etc. etc. and so it could be a looong while before I ever get around to even re-evaluating my storyline for A Soul's Reason. Sorry for any disappointment this causes...

Aw thanks...
Due to DRL and all, I haven't gotten around to working on ASR yet.. but I have started posting another story, which is already completed and thus will (hopefully) be updated regularly.. Child of the Shadows.
Let me know what you all think, and I will try to complete A Soul's Reason and A Soul's Relief sometime this summer, hopefully posting by June or July, depending on when I get my laptop..

Hey, Mystral. Long time, no see.
I'm really, REALLY sorry I didn't keep up with the story, but DRL kinda got me off the boards for... ever.
I just finished reading the whole thing, though. Loved every minute of it.
Now, onto A Soul's Reason...
