One Last Gift
Once the bundle was placed into her arms, all the fears and doubts about motherhood faded and in their places settled an overwhelming love that she realized had been there since the discovery of the precious life inside her. All of the months of wondering and worrying disappeared now that her son had been placed in her arms. Nothing could be more perfect than this moment, holding her child for the first time.
Looking up with a teary smile, she met her sister’s gaze and felt a sob rip through her. “He’s absolutely perfect, isn’t he?” she whispered.
Her sister Nala studied the infant carefully. “He looks like his father, doesn’t he?”
“That’s why he’s perfect,” Nyrianna replied. She took a deep, shuddering breath. “I miss him…”
Once more, the sisters locked glances and Nala blinked away tears. “I know, I miss him, too.”
Running her fingers through the bit of golden fluff on the baby’s head, Nyrianna marveled once more at her son’s uncanny resemblance to his father. “Ky was so proud when I told him I was pregnant,” she murmured. “I wish…I wish he could have seen him.”
“He’ll be watching over him,” Nala said with absolute conviction.
Nyrianna nodded, brushing her knuckles against the baby’s unbelievably soft cheeks. “I know,” she said quietly. “But he would have been such a good father; it doesn’t seem fair that he didn’t live to be here.” Resolutely, she shut her eyes, focused on pushing her pain down deep inside of her, a secret place that was hers alone.
“Ky’s son has you,” Nala reminded her, “and that’s the way he would have wanted it. He knows you’ll take good care of his child.” Nala was her guardian angel, Nyrianna decided, always there to encourage her, never letting her fall too deeply into despair. Nala had moved in with her the day after they had gotten the news of Ky’s death and she showed no signs of going anywhere.
Reaching out, Nyrianna took Nala’s hand and squeezed it. “What would I do without you?” she asked tenderly. Then she looked at the baby now stirring in her arms. “What would we do without you?” she amended.
Nala laughed and took her nephew in her arms. “Well, I’m sure you’d manage just fine without me,” the younger woman answered. “But there’s no need, since I’m here and I’m more than willing.” She leaned close and inhaled, closing her eyes, savoring the baby’s clean, unique scent. “Besides, I don’t want to miss a minute of my nephew’s life if I can help it.”
“And you won’t,” Nyrianna assured her. She lay back wearily on the pillows, watching as Nala checked the baby’s diaper and wrapped him more securely in his blanket. Then she carefully placed him in the cradle that had been ready and waiting for him for weeks now. The baby barely stirred during all of Nala’s ministrations, and Nyrianna sent the goddess a quick prayer of gratitude for what seemed to be an exceptionally well-behaved baby. Of course, all of that could change in an instant, she acknowledged with a smile.
“Are you hungry?” Nala asked once the child was safely settled.
“Starving!” Nyrianna declared. “Giving birth is exhausting, and I think I could eat the wrong end of a gundark.”
Laughing and shaking her head, Nala replied, “I think I can do a little better than that.”
Soon there was a tray with hearty bowl of stew and a thick slice of bread with soft cheese. Nala placed it across Nyrianna’s lap and helped her to sit up. Then she put a glass of cool water fresh from the well on the tray. Suddenly, Nala looked more solemn as she produced a tiny package from her pocket. She placed it one the tray and met her sister’s confused gaze.
“What is this?” the new mother asked as she picked it up.
Biting her lip, Nala seemed at a loss for words. Finally, she closed her hand over Nyrianna’s and smiled, though tears had welled up in her eyes. “Before he left that…that day,” she began, “he came to me and gave me this. I was instructed to give it to you on the day his son was born.” Nyrianna gasped and Nala nodded. “He knew it was a boy and he must have sensed he might not come back.” She shrugged, her expression troubled. “I don’t know, he never said why he was entrusting it to me. At the time, I just thought he was worried that he would be gone when you had the baby, not that he’d be…” Nala choked back a sob and shook her head. “Well, not that he’d be gone.”
“He knew…” Nyrianna whispered in an awed voice. “Somehow, he knew he would not be here to see his child born.” Nyrianna shook her head. “He was always getting these…feelings” she murmured. “I never understood it, but I learned to trust them. I guess that’s why he didn’t tell me, he knew I’d worry.” She studied the little package carefully, turning it over but not opening it. “What’s in here?” she asked Nala.
The younger woman sighed. “I don’t know,” she replied. “To be honest, when he gave it to me, I wasn’t all that interested,” she confessed with a guilty chuckle. “And then later, when he didn’t come back…” She swallowed hard. “Then I couldn’t bear to, it seemed a terrible invasion of his privacy – and yours.” Nala looked down at the package. “I don’t know how else to explain it, but that is the gist of it.”
Nyrianna threw her sister a look of gratitude and understanding. “Let’s open it together,” she suggested. “Ky wouldn’t mind, obviously he trusted you if he asked you to give it to me.”
“Are you sure?” Nala asked. “I can give you some privacy if you’d like.”
Nyrianna looked at her sister and grasped one of her hands. “We do this together, just as we have done everything since Ky died.” Then the two women each took a corner and ripped open the tiny bundle. There was an exquisitely carved little box inside and Nyrianna gasped. “I saw a box just like this the day I told Ky we were having a baby.” She shook her head. “But it was so expensive, and I told Ky we had better things to spend our credits on than trinkets.” She cradled the box in her hand. “He must have gone back and gotten it, hidden it away from me.”
“Open it,” Nala suggested.
The two women shared a giggle that sounded very much the ones that had made their mother yell at them to go to sleep when they were girls and sharing some confidence in the dark of their room. “All right,” Nyrianna replied as she opened the lid.
The box seemed empty for a moment, and then a tiny holographic image flickered in the space between the two women. At the sight of Ky’s smiling face, Nyrianna burst into tears.
“My love,” Ky said. “If you are seeing this then it means my premonition has come true and I am not there to see you holding our son.” He smiled sadly and shook his head. “I’m sorry for that, sorry I let you down.”
“You never let me down,” Nyrianna whispered.
“And I want you to know that loving you made everything in this life worthwhile,” he continued. “You were my other half, my heart. You made me complete from the very first moment I saw you – covered in mud and cursing a streak that any spacer would envy.”
Nyrianna blushed at Nala’s inquisitive look and laughed behind her hand. How well she remembered that day, and how precious was the memory now.
“So raise our son well, Nyri,” Ky said. “I know that with you to guide him, he’ll grow up to be a good man – one I’d be proud to call son.” Then he grinned and put his hands in his pockets. “I know I made you crazy by refusing to discuss names, but I do have one last request. I would like to name our son.” There was a pause and Nyrianna leaned forward, as if she could touch him. “I want to name him Obi-Wan. So guard our Obi-Wan well, my love. I love you, Nyri, and I always will.”
With that, the image flickered and disappeared.
Somehow sensing what her sister needed, Nala slipped over to the cradle and picked up the babe, who was awake and staring with wide blue eyes. Quickly, she placed him in his mother’s arms.
Nyrianna kissed him. “Welcome to the galaxy, Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

Awww...that was so lovely.
Sad that Ky didn't live to see his son born but so tenderly sweet that he had the perfect gift for Nyrianna after she had Obi-Wan.
Beautiful job

Oh, that was lovely. But now she won't even have her son to comfort her. To lose her husband and at some future time, her son, tragic.
Great job. Although this could use a sequel....

Beautiful! I just want to cry, both happiness and sadness at the same time. Sadness that Obi-Wan lost a father, and happiness at his beautiful parents! Very well done!
