Part II
“You’re going to kill a child?” The words burst out of Obi-Wan before he could stop them, and even he winced at his shrill tone. A quelling look from Qui-Gon made him close his mouth, though there were many other things he longed to say. The glance from his Master had been unmistakable, however. The Padawan crossed his arms over his chest, his jaw clenching. How his Master could sit there so calmly was beyond him.
Qui-Gon glanced at Obi-Wan one more time to assure himself that the young man had gotten himself under control and turned back to Wyyk. The secretary, however, looked appalled and stared at the two Jedi in horror.
“Kill a child?” he squeaked. Then he shook his head vehemently. “We’re not barbarians, you know!” He sniffed a bit, obviously offended. “The Living Gift is no child, but a man of twenty years.” Wyyk drew himself up a bit and tried to stare down his nose at Qui-Gon, but even seated as they were the Jedi Master still towered over the Trade Secretary.
“The Living Gift is twenty years old?” Qui-Gon asked carefully. Then he threw a look at Obi-Wan as if to remind him that they must be sure they had all the facts before coming to any conclusions. Obi-Wan shifted on his feet and felt some slight color come to his cheeks.
“Well of course,” Wyyk replied. “When the Living Gift comes to us, we provide a gracious means of living for the Gift and his or her parents,” he explained. “For twenty years the Living Gift is showered with our praise and our prayers, so that when they are transformed and taken into the presence of the goddess Shybyta, they will carry those words to her, and assure her of our continued devotion.”
Qui-Gon nodded thoughtfully. “I see,” he murmured, his hand coming up to rub absently at his beard. “You say the new government has the Living Gift in custody?”
Wyyk nodded fretfully. “They say that they cannot allow such a “cruel ritual” to be perpetuated any longer,” he said with incredulous disgust. He shook his head sadly. “They do not understand the importance of keeping to the old customs.”
Once more, the Master turned to gaze at the Padawan. Obi-Wan, caught under his Master’s sharp gaze, bit at his lower lip. It was true that he had been about to comment that it was all very good to say the old ways must go on if one wasn’t the Living Gift. Being slaughtered for a ritual might give one an entirely
different
view on what should be continued and what should not. For now, however, he would hold his tongue. He could see that Qui-Gon was fully aware that he would be getting an earful once the two of them were alone again. His Master gave him a long-suffering look and gave his attention once more to Wyyk.
“Is there any way we may speak to the Gift?” Qui-Gon asked softly.
Wyyk frowned for a moment. “I don’t believe so,” he replied. “They are keeping him under a most careful guard.”
“Yes, I expect they are,” Qui-Gon answered, seemingly unperturbed. He smiled. “Ah well, a resolution will present itself, of that I’m sure.” The Jedi Master got to his feet and motioned toward Obi-Wan. “Come along, Padawan. We have many matters to attend to, and I’m quite sure that Secretary Wyyk is a very busy man.”
Wyyk stood as well, his expression thoroughly confused. “That’s it?” he asked in disbelief. “That’s all you’re going to do?”
Qui-Gon shrugged and adjusted his robes. “For the moment, that is sufficient,” he said softly. “I assure you that we will be taking an active interest in the situation.”
“What does that mean?” Wyyk questioned, his tone disgruntled.
Obi-Wan had to stifle his laughter, because it was not often that anyone stood up to Qui-Gon and actually
asked
him what some of his more enigmatic answers actually meant. Even Qui-Gon looked momentarily surprised before his expression assumed its normal serenity. “We must do some research, first, Secretary Wyyk Only when we have enough information can we even begin to think on acting.”
Wyyk looked rather taken aback by the Jedi’s response, his gaze flickering uneasily to Obi-Wan, who kept his expression carefully neutral. “I see,” Wyyk said. “I see.” He seemed rather at a loss.
Qui-Gon bowed to the secretary, as did Obi-Wan. “We’ll let ourselves out, and thank you for your time.”
With that, the two Jedi left the still bemused Wyyk behind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The two Jedi slipped out of the building and into the streets. The people were uneasy, their established government topped and new one in its place. They tried, however, to live their lives as if nothing had changed. Some succeeded in the charade and some did not. Trade was, of course, the first to feel the effects of the new regime, but it had also been the first establishment to be put back in order. Business was going on as usual, and trade with other planets had resumed. That was one reason that they had found it so easy to arrive on the planet undetected as Jedi.
“Tell me, Padawan,” Qui-Gon murmured as they made their way through the crowds. “Where do you think we should start our investigation?”
Obi-Wan thought about it for a moment. “Well, we
could
try to speak to the deposed High Tribal Leader,” he ventured. “If we could find him, that is.”
The Master chuckled. “You sound unsure of your answer.”
“Not unsure, Master, at least not exactly,” Obi-Wan replied easily as they entered a small alley. “I just don’t know that approaching him would do us any good – at least at this point.”
“On that we agree, Obi-Wan,” Qui-Gon murmured. They came to a stop and the two of them looked at each other. “So…where do we go from here?”
Obi-Wan frowned thoughtfully. “Well, I would like to find out more about this ceremony for starters, Master.”
“And why is that?” Qui-Gon asked, one brow arching.
“Well, Master,” Obi-Wan replied carefully. “I realize that I assumed certain things earlier about the ceremony, and I understand that we need more complete information, if only to aid us in our negotiations if it should come to that.” He lowered his eyes under Qui-Gon’s scrutiny.
Qui-Gon laughed softly and put one big hand on Obi-Wan’s shoulder. “Very good, my Padawan,” he said with pride. “You learn from your mistakes. That is to your credit.”
“If I didn’t learn from them, you would only insist on teaching me the lesson yet again, Master,” Obi-Wan quipped with a roguish grin.
“That is so,” Qui-Gon acknowledged. Then he crossed his arms over his chest and studied Obi-Wan once more. “How do propose that we go about learning more about this Living Gift and the ritual of Shybyta?”
“I would say that we start with any temple or holy place dedicated to Shybyta,” Obi-Wan replied instantly.
“Excellent,” Qui-Gon answered with a nod of his head. “That’s exactly what we shall do.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They found the main temple quite easily, for the goddess Shybyta was the primary deity for the small planet. They hesitated at the door, seeing a pair of shoes placed carefully just outside. Qui-Gon nodded at Obi-Wan and the two of them began removing their boots. Qui-Gon gave Obi-Wan an inquiring look when he noticed that one of his Padawan’s socks had a hole in it. “I got dressed in a hurry,” the young man explained quietly.
“Don’t you remember what the crèche master used to say about wearing clean undergarments?” Qui-Gon teased. “I should think the same goes for socks.”
“Yes, Master,” Obi-Wan answered with a roll of his eyes. Then they entered the temple.
There was a hushed air about the place, as was usual in the holy places they had visited across the galaxy. There was a slight smell of incense wafting on the air, but it was subtle and sweet. A woman in long, flowing purple robes approached them on silent footsteps, her bare feet making no sound on the white stone floor. She was slightly older than Obi-Wan, with direct green eyes and dark brown hair. “Greetings, strangers,” she said in a low, musical voice. “Welcome to the home of Shybyta – she who is in many places at once.”
“Greetings,” Qui-Gon said and gave a low bow. Obi-Wan followed his Master’s cue and bowed as well, murmuring a quiet greeting.
Qui-Gon smiled charmingly and indicated Obi-Wan. “My companion and I are students of religion, strictly as a hobby, you understand,” he said. “And we came across a reference to Shybyta in one of our texts. Of course, I told him that the next time our business brought us to this corner of the galaxy we simply
must
come here and pay homage to the goddess.”
She smiled, obviously pleased at his respect for a religion that was not his own. “We welcome all travelers – no matter at whose altar they might bend their knee.” She held out her hand. “I am Alixxy, high priestess of this temple.” Qui-Gon clasped her hand briefly in his and then she gave her hand to Obi-Wan, who did the same. “May I give you a brief introduction to the ways of Shybyta?”
“That would be most welcome,” Qui-Gon answered as they fell into step beside her.
Together, they approached the rough-hewn altar, upon which rich green leaves had been placed. As they got closer, they could smell the aroma rising from the leaves and when Obi-Wan looked more closely, he could see small, dark brown beans scattered among the greenery. “Those are the detui beans,” Alixxy explained. “Our economy is based on the trading of that little caf bean.”
“Yes,” Qui-Gon said. “My partner and I are here negotiating a trade contract for detui.”
Alixxy nodded her head. “Yes, most of our guests are connected with the trade in some manner or another.”
“I’ve heard about some sort of ritual,” Obi-Wan interjected.
The priestess’ eyes widened and she turned in surprise to Obi-Wan. “The Ceremony of Shybyta?”
“Yes,” Obi-Wan answered, carefully ignoring his Master’s displeased look. He sighed, knowing he was in for a lecture later, but he had known it would possibly take Qui-Gon hours to get around to asking about it, and being young, his curiosity would be more easily excused.
“It is a scared ritual for the people of my world,” Alixxy said softly. “It helps ensure that our people will not starve and our way of life will go on…uninterrupted.”
“When does it take place?” Obi-Wan asked, once more ignoring Qui-Gon’s scowl.
“Every twenty years or so,” she answered. “The timing depends on certain factors.”
“Really?” Obi-Wan asked. “What sort of factors?”
“Obi-Wan,” Qui-Gon said in a warning voice. “That is quite enough.”
Recognizing that he had pushed as far as it was wise to do; Obi-Wan nodded and fell back a step. Alixxy turned to Qui-Gon. “Your young friend has much curiosity about our rituals.”
“He’s a most curious young fellow,” Qui-Gon answered and then with a pointed glance at Obi-Wan, he added, “And it gets him into trouble sometimes.”
Alixxy laughed and shook her head, placing one hand on Qui-Gon’s arm. “No harm done, sirs,” she assured him. “There is nothing secret about the Ceremony.”
Qui-Gon was silent for a moment and then seemed to come to a decision. “So...is it true that it involves a sacrifice?”
She hesitated for a moment, and then gave a short nod. “That is true,” Alixxy said softly. “It is our way.”
“And this Living Gift is offered up to Shybyta?” Qui-Gon asked in a carefully neutral voice.
“Yes,” Alixxy answered.
“And the sacrifice, how is that done?” Obi-Wan asked, unable to repress the question.
Alixxy turned and gave Obi-Wan a gentle smile. “It is hard for you to grasp, yes? You think it cruel.”
Obi-Wan flushed under her patient regard. “I…I…don’t know,” he replied at last.
“The Living Gift is given a draught,” she explained softly. “A sweet tasting potion that makes him or her sleepy and we build a bed upon the altar of Shybyta.” Alixxy’s voice seemed to falter for a moment. “And then the Living Gift simply goes to sleep and does not wake up. He is ushered into the Lands Beyond in the arms of Shybyta.”
“Oh,” Obi-Wan said, clearly taken aback.
“You expected a blood sacrifice, perhaps?” Alixxy asked with a touch of humor. “Perhaps that we cut out a beating heart and offered it up to Shybyta?”
The young man flushed and shook his head. “I don’t know what I thought,” he confessed. “But that wasn’t it.”
“I understand that our ways are not your own,” Alixxy conceded. “But to us, they are sacred.”
“May I ask you a question?” Qui-Gon spoke at last.
Alixxy turned to him and nodded. “Of course, as I said, there is no secrecy about the ritual.”
The Jedi Master stared at her for a moment and then asked softly, “How do
you
know the Living Gift?”
Her eyes widened and she blinked for a moment, tears filling her eyes. “You are very wise, sir,” Alixxy replied. “You have a touch of the Force, I think.” Qui-Gon merely smiled and shrugged. “He is my younger brother. I am honored to be a servant and sister to the Living Gift. It is why I am high priestess here,” she said, gesturing around her. “I serve here so that when the time for the Ceremony comes, I am here for him.”

*Snags first post* Woohoo it worked
And very interesting ritual there, interesting that they use a sleeping draught instead of some of the other more barbaric methods. Definetely a humane society at least. Very interesting indeed. Can't wait to see where you go from here!

I had to laugh at this:
Qui-Gon laughed softly and put one big hand on Obi-Wan’s shoulder. “Very good, my Padawan,” he said with pride. “You learn from your mistakes. That is to your credit.”
“If I didn’t learn from them, you would only insist on teaching me the lesson yet again, Master,” Obi-Wan quipped with a roguish grin.
So true.
The sacrifice might be gentle but the person was still going to die, gentle or not. There had to be some other way of upholding their traditions without death.
Looking forward to more.

Obi is so adorably naive about some things....he was expecting something typical of one who does not see life the way some others do.....cute

For a moment I thought Alixxy was going to say that
she
was the Living Gift. So she's the sister ... hmm. But the way she described the sacrifice made sense. Not gory at all, but clean and precise. Somehow, the scene about the shoes placed outside the shrine made me feel uneasy, though.
Loved Qui and Obi's banter.
And the hole in the socks!
More pwease.

Just finding this little gem.
I am most surpised the Jedi hadn't hard of this ritual before. Had they, it would have been most intersting to see what they though of sacrificing Force sensitive children.
Weel, lucy they now have heard of it and have been aked to the planet themselves.
Qui-Gon shrugged and adjusted his robes. “For the moment, that is sufficient,” he said softly. “I assure you that we will be taking an active interest in the situation.”
“What does that mean?” Wyyk questioned, his tone disgruntled.
Obi-Wan had to stifle his laughter, because it was not often that anyone stood up to Qui-Gon and actually asked him what some of his more enigmatic answers actually meant.
Ha!!! No kidding. Loved Qui-Gon's surpsie at the quesiton.
“If I didn’t learn from them, you would only insist on teaching me the lesson yet again, Master,” Obi-Wan quipped with a roguish grin.
Most assuredly!! LOL
Hmmm, Alixxy comes as a bit of a surprise.
Might I ask for a PM when you update here as well?

Thanks for the PM!
“Kill a child?” he squeaked. Then he shook his head vehemently. “We’re not barbarians, you know!” He sniffed a bit, obviously offended. “The Living Gift is no child, but a man of twenty years.”
Okay... I assumed what Obi-Wan did. Good job!
Obi-Wan had to stifle his laughter, because it was not often that anyone stood up to Qui-Gon and actually [i]asked
him what some of his more enigmatic answers actually meant. Even Qui-Gon looked momentarily surprised before his expression assumed its normal serenity.

That's twice I assumed something wrongly! You're doing a very good job of writing this.

Um... wow....
Wonderful update!

I could really picture Qui-Gon trying to stifle his irritation as Obi-Wan tried to interrogate Alixxy! The contrast between eager padawan and wise master is never better illustrated as when Qui-Gon replied that Obi-Wan was a curious fellow, and that it would "get him into trouble." Priceless!
Very perceptive of Qui-Gon to realise that Alixxy's brother was to be the sacrifice.
Let's have the next part! * makes pleading eyes *
