dancing Yay! Postie! And a lovely one, at that. Poor Obi, having to come to terms with this all, but more so, Poor Alixxy, losing her brother. I love the interaction between the siblings, and between Qui and Obi. As always, a wonderful update. peace

This was a great update... are u kidding!? i dont think anyone would mind if this extended to 20 chapters tongue laugh

One day you might be called upon to die for something that you believe, Obi-Wan.

“Then I shall face my death with bravery and dignity,” he answered. He knew it was not specifically the Force speaking to him, merely the person the Force thought he could be in time – a better Obi-Wan, one more in tune with the true will of the Force – the man he would become.

And what if others do not think your cause is worthy? The voice was slightly quizzical as if testing him.

Obi-Wan hesitated, sensing the trap in the question. “I would do what I thought best,” he acknowledged. “I would trust in the Force.”

What of Ilbin? Does he not also feel the Force? Can he not seek the will of the Force you both serve in your own ways?

“I don’t know what to think of this,” he admitted to himself, to the Force.

There might come a day when you must lead your own Padawan through troubled and confusing waters, trust in the Force, and let it be your guide.

He was silent for a moment, felt the currents of the Force lift him up, carry him toward enlightenment.

Do not put your faith in emotion, Obi-Wan. Emotions are fleeting, but the Force is eternal.

Obi-Wan remained silent, mulling over what his Master had said, and where the Force had led his own thoughts. At last, he sighed and opened his eyes. He got to his feet and walked back into the Temple, finally sure of what he must do.

I couldnt help but think about old Ben's sacrifice in ANH as i read this...very very touching.

Good to see that Obi Wan finally accepted this, even thought it's something different from what he believes in... shows maturity in his part happy

I loved this update... i have bittersweet feelings about the next update because it will be the last one sad cry , but i look forward to reading what comes next... i'm sure Obi Wan is gonna have a talk with Qui Gon and maybe even Ilbin

Tnx for the pm! grin

peace

Wow - that was some update.

I'm a little surprised Ilbin chose to fulfill his destiny but I admire his strength in facing the ritual.

I'm gald to see Obi-Wan turn to the Force for guidance in accepting Ilbin's decision.

Great update, though I'm a bit concerned about the next one... worried worried worried

Wow! You know, for a moment I really thought Obi was gonna lose it, big time! Especially when he pulled Qui-Gon's arm away. But his master at least had the sense to realise this was something that Obi-Wan had to come to terms with himself. And the whole bit at the end was stunning, Vadey, with Obi trying meditate peacefully on the matter.

Like everyone else I can only echo previously mentioned sentiments: I don't want this story to end! cry

He felt Qui-Gon’s attempt to soothe him, but then his Master retreated, as if he realized that this was something Obi-Wan would have to sort through on his own. Yes, it is.

“It is a fine thing to choose your own path, Ilbin, no matter where that path might lead,” Qui-Gon agreed quietly. *nods*

Ilbin’s own smile flickered and wavered, before settling more firmly on his features. “I have decided to follow the destiny that has been mine from birth,” he answered softly. “I want to go home…to be with my true Mother in the Lands Beyond.” I expected nothing less.

Immediately after Ilbin’s announcement, Obi-Wan gave one short nod of his head, turned on his heel and strode away. Across their bond he could feel his Master’s embarrassment at his behavior, and the anger which flared and was so quickly suppressed. He was vaguely aware of the murmured apology his Master offered before rushing after him. All he could sense from Ilbin and his sister was sorrow and acceptance. He broke into a sprint, as if by running, he could escape the situation. That- I would have thought he was better behaved. But he's a teenaged boy.

Obi-Wan’s strides did not slow, not even when he heard the furious pounding of his Master’s steps coming up fast behind him. He was not surprised when a hard hand grabbed him by the arm and whirled him around. He looked up into Qui-Gon’s face, took in the harsh lines of his Master’s disappointment. “What was the meaning of that, Padawan?” Qui-Gon’s voice was low and controlled, which revealed the full depth of his anger. Qui-Gon is not someone I would want angry at me.

“The Order may sometimes wish we did not have emotions, but that is something which, fortunately, they cannot control completely.” He crossed his arms over his massive chest, his expression troubled. *snorts* It's the old Order.

“But that’s not true!” Obi-Wan protested. “Surely you can’t believe that! It’s all just superstitious nonsense.” And how do you know?

Qui-Gon smiled sadly and shook his head. “I believe in the Force, something that most beings in the galaxy cannot see or touch – and they might think the Force is also superstitious nonsense. But I have faith that it exists.” Qui-Gon waited for Obi-Wan to absorb his words, and then continued quietly, “Besides, it does not matter if we believe, Obi-Wan – only that Ilbin does.” Exactly.

One day you might be called upon to die for something that you believe, Obi-Wan. Yes, he will be.

I'm not going to quote the rest of the conversation, but it's the best part of the chapter. All those questions, making Obi-Wan think and finally decide what he needs to do.

Obi-Wan remained silent, mulling over what his Master had said, and where the Force had led his own thoughts. At last, he sighed and opened his eyes. He got to his feet and walked back into the Temple, finally sure of what he must do. Good. He's finally maturing.

Wonderful update!

OMG excellent post.

“What was the meaning of that, Padawan?” Qui-Gon’s voice was low and controlled, which revealed the full depth of his anger.

Nostrils flaring with fury of his own, Obi-Wan dared to yank his arm away from his Master. The look of shock on Qui-Gon’s face finally broke through Obi-Wan’s rage, leaving him weak and empty. He immediately bowed slightly, giving both his apology and his submission in that simple gesture. “I’m sorry, Master,” he said fervently, his eyes lowered. “I truly am sorry for my behavior, which I know has shamed you.” Then his gaze flickered up to meet Qui-Gon’s and the younger man said. “But I cannot apologize for my feelings about this matter.”

Qui-Gon probably felt the same, but being a Master he had to show strength in the face of Obi-Wans weakness.

Well, if this goes beyond 9 posts I'll still be happy. More to read, and that's always awesome. Or maybe a sequel.

Anyway, this was an excellent post. Perhaps it's because I'm younger and more emotional myself, but I found myself initally siding with Obi-Wan, even though I know what has to be done. Poor Ilbin . . . such a rough destiny to face. sad

And poor Alixxy . . . cry

I can't wait for the conclusion.

Awesome as always. applause

Chapter 9

“Faith is to believe what we do not see; and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe.” - Saint Aurelius Augustine

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obi-Wan knocked softly on the door of the chamber he knew Ilbin occupied. The door opened almost immediately to reveal Ilbin’s pale but composed features. When he saw the young Padawan standing there, Ilbin smiled widely and stood aside, inviting Obi-Wan inside with the gesture. Nervously, Obi-Wan slipped past the young man and into the quiet room.
“I’m sorry for disturbing you,” Obi-Wan said apologetically. “I know there must be things…” His words trailed off and he cleared his throat. He wondered exactly how one prepared for death, and then decided that was a topic best left unexplored.
Ilbin waved away both the thought that Obi-Wan was a disturbance and the awkwardness of acknowledging the impending ritual. “Please, sit down,” he replied politely, pointing to some huge pillows that were strewn on the floor.
Lowering himself to a cushion, Obi-Wan waited uncertainly as Ilbin did the same. “These are very comfortable,” the young Jedi murmured uneasily.
“I find it easier to meditate here rather than kneeling,” Ilbin explained with a shrug.
“So you really do meditate?” Obi-Wan asked in surprise.
“Perhaps not as you do,” the young man acknowledged. “Sometimes I reach for the Force, as I’m sure you do, but more often I simply seek the will of Shybyta – make sure that I’m acting according to her wishes.”
“Just as I seek the will of the Force,” Obi-Wan said, sounding slightly ill-at-ease. He looked at Ilbin and a quick smile flashed on his face. “I guess we have more in common than I thought.”
Ilbin returned the smile and nodded easily. “I am sure we have quite a bit in common,” he said. “I would guess that our methods of meditating, and our reasons for doing so, are quite similar.”
An awkward silence fell between them as Obi-Wan searched for the words to express what he was feeling, what the Force had shown him. Ilbin waited patiently, though his expression remained expectant. “I…I meditated earlier,” Obi-Wan explained. Then he flushed slightly. “To help me understand all of this…to accept it, I suppose.”
“I am sorry to be the cause of such distress, Obi-Wan,” Ilbin murmured.
Obi-Wan held up his hand and shook his head. “No, no, I’m the one who should apologize,” he replied. “It’s just that this is something I’ve never encountered before and I’m not quite sure…” He broke off in frustration, unable to express what he felt.
“I understand that everything about this situation must be very difficult to accept,” Ilbin offered.
“Yes,” Obi-Wan replied, “it is.”
Ilbin paused thoughtfully and then leaned forward. “Thank you for at least trying to understand; it’s more than many would do.”
Obi-Wan’s lashes fluttered down to shield his eyes from Ilbin’s piercing gaze. “My Master thinks I should try harder,” he said dryly with a slightly smile.
“Your Master is a wise man,” Ilbin observed, but then he laughed softly and shook his head. “But you are not lacking in wisdom, Obi-Wan, just experience. That is also something we share.”
“But I will have the chance to experience what I do not know yet,” Obi-Wan replied, lifting his head. The slightest note of bitterness laced his voice.
“Perhaps,” Ilbin allowed, “or perhaps not.” He shrugged. “There are no guarantees for any of us, are there?”
The young Jedi considered this for a moment. “No, I suppose there aren’t,” he acknowledged. Then he tilted his head and spoke very quietly, “Are you…?” He stopped and bit his lip.
“Am I afraid?” Ilbin asked solemnly, guessing at the question the young Padawan was afraid to ask.
Obi-Wan nodded. “Yes.”
“Yes, I’m afraid,” Ilbin said. “But my fear is less powerful than my conviction than what I’m doing is the right thing to do.”
“The Jedi are taught not to fear death, that to pass from this life is merely to become one with the Force,” Obi-Wan said. “I do not fear death, I guess what I fear is how I will die.”
“The pain?” Ilbin asked curiously.
Obi-Wan shook his head. “No, the pain will be over, and we are taught to deal with pain even as younglings. I am not afraid of pain.”
“Then what is it that you fear?” Ilbin asked gently.
The Padawan chewed at his lip for a moment, his eyes straying out the window to look at the sky beyond. “I fear…I fear that my death won’t mean anything. I want to spend my life doing the will of the Force, and when it comes time for me to die, I want my death to serve the Force as well.” He snorted softly and shook his head. “That’s silly, isn’t it?” He rubbed at his eyes. “It seems vain, now that I think of it.” he added severely. “It is wrong.”
“It is human,” Ilbin corrected him, reaching out to touch him lightly on the hand. “We all want to feel like we made a difference, no matter how small. You want your death, as well as your life, to serve something you believe in, that’s all. That is a noble thing to wish for, Obi-Wan.”
“Yes, that’s it,” Obi-Wan said with relief. “You said it exactly what I meant to say. I want to know I made a difference – no matter how or when I become one with the Force.”
The Living Gift and the Jedi shared a look of understanding, each taking comfort from this moment in their own way. “You have already made a difference, Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Ilbin assured him.
It was a moment neither of them would ever forget. It was also the last time they would speak.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The day for the Ritual arrived, the sun shining brightly overhead, a light breeze making the banners flap in the streets. The people lined the main avenue, waiting for a glimpse of the Living Gift. Ilbin spent his last night in isolation with only one companion, purifying himself for the ritual ahead. A small building, richly appointed and set atop a hill overlooking the city was the traditional dwelling for the Living Gift’s Last Night.

A priestess or priest usually accompanied the Living Gift, acting as both servant and spiritual advisor. In Ilbin’s case, it had been a foregone conclusion that Alixxy would be his companion. The siblings had spent the night, their last night in this life, secluded together. The walls surrounding the house were richly painted with portraits of Living Gifts that had slept here before Ilbin. Their faces all bore the same graceful tranquility that Ilbin exuded. By the gate that led out to the main avenue, there were rows of handprints, the last marks left by Living Gifts as they made their way to the Temple where they would be reunited with Shybyta.

Dozens and dozens of hands, rich green in color and of various sizes, marked the spaces by the gates. Ilbin had memorized them over the years, making up stories about those who had left them. It had comforted him, given him strength for that day when it would be time for him to add his own mark to the wall. Behind the gate, Ilbin paused and took a deep breath, then gave a nod to his sister unlocked the gate.

The people, who had been restive and anxious, settled immediately into silence when the gates swung open with a creaking sound that heralded the beginning of the Ritual.

Ilbin stood straight and tall in his black and green robes, Alixxy at his side in her holy purple. She held out a small pot and Ilbin lowered his hand onto the thick green liquid inside, coating his palm. He held his hand high for all the people to see before placing it carefully on the wall, making his own last mark. Carefully, Alixxy put the pot aside and clasped his hand in her own, the green now transferring to her palm as well.

Behind him, the priests and priestesses of Shybyta fell into formation, coming from around the rear of the house and flowing around it from where they had waited patiently.
Together, the two of them moved through the streets and the people cried out their blessings to their Living Gift. They reached out to touch his robe as he passed, the women cried, the men sniffed and shifted on their feet. Children merely stared at him in awed silence. The procession was strangely quiet, an almost sacred silence falling over those taking part and those observing.

When the procession reached the Temple, the High Tribal Leader got up from the throne that had been placed by the Temple entrance and lifted his scepter high. “Hear me, my people!” His voice was surprisingly strong in the cool morning air. “Behold, Your Living Gift!”

The people cheered, waving their banners, crying out Shybyta’s name, calling out her blessings on the Gift and the Ritual. “He comes to renew the bond between Shybyta and our people. May Her name be always blessed. May the Gift be returned to the Mother,” Zim called out. Ilbin turned at the doors and waved his hands over the crowd, giving them his blessing. With that, he turned once more and entered the Temple for the last time. Inside, there was a perfect, almost eerie quiet.

Yesterday, Alixxy had explained to the Jedi that perfect silence must be maintained inside the Temple once the Living Gift entered. Only the High Priestess and the Gift would speak. The Temple was dark, illuminated only by the flame of a thousand candles. Obi-Wan knew, from his discussion with Alixxy, that they eschewed all modern sources of power during the Ritual, relying instead on these unique tapers fashioned from by-products of the detui bean. The candles gave off a smoky, pungent aroma that was pleasing in some strange way.

As Obi-Wan looked around, he saw that some among the spectators had something painted on their left cheeks. It looked like a trio of dark green leaves, he thought, and wondered at the significance. Some of those who bore the mark were old and stooped, while some seemed to be as young as Obi-Wan himself. He glanced up at his Master, the question in his eyes. Qui-Gon merely gave the tiniest shrug and they gave their attention once more to the Ritual.

Ilbin and Alixxy made their way up the center of the Temple, their eyes not straying from the altar where the Living Gift would give the ultimate sacrifice. Ilbin passed by Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and they saw how tightly he grasped his sister’s hand. Obi-Wan detected a slight tremor in Alixxy’s delicate frame, but her expression was carefully composed.

When the pair reached the steps leading up to the altar, Ilbin let go of Alixxy’s hand and the priests and priestesses who had followed him into the Temple stepped forward and two divested Ilbin of his rich robes. Beneath them, Ilbin wore a simple dark green shirt and black leggings. He knelt and Alixxy took his hand and put it over her heart, the green print standing out on her robes.

“Do you return to your holy Mother of your own free will?” she asked, her voice carrying in the silence of the Temple.

“I do,” Ilbin answered strongly.

“Do you go to her, returning to her once more her beloved child, whom she sacrificed so that we might live?”

“I do.”

“Are you the Living Gift?” she asked softly, her eyes glistening suspiciously.

“I am the Living Gift.” He made the affirmation with a steady voice.

She nodded, her serenity firmly back in place. “Then return to our beloved Shybyta, and assure that her sacrifice was not in vain.”

Ilbin reached out and briefly squeezed Alixxy’s hands, the only sign between them that they were saying good-bye. He gracefully ascended the altar, which was strewn with the rich, waxy detui leaves and scattered with the detui beans. The last glimpse Obi-Wan had of him, Ilbin was sitting on the edge of the altar, taking a chalice from Alixxy. He drank deeply of the liquid inside and then handed it solemnly back to his sister. He shuddered once and then lay back on the leaves, which released a pungent odor with the movement.

Then the priests and priestesses gathered around the altar, clasping hands and pressed together so tightly that nothing could be seen beyond them. The Temple was so silent that they heard the rustling of the leaves as Ilbin shifted position. From somewhere far away, a bell rang, sweet and high in a soft, steady chime that seemed to mimic a heartbeat.

The sound of the bell slowed so gradually that Obi-Was barely aware of it. Then he heard a quiet gasp come from the altar, nothing more than a loud release of breath, and the bell fell silent. He saw some slight movement among those surrounding the altar, and then Alixxy moved out of the circle to face those assembled.

“The Ritual is complete. Blessed be Shybyta and her holy child.”

And when that living wall broke apart, and their hands unclasped and they moved aside, the still, silent form of Ilbin was revealed.

His expression was peaceful, his eyes closed and the light flush of life still lingering on his cheeks.

The Living Gift had gone home.

A short epilogue will follow. My deepest thanks to all of those who read this, lurker or not. tongue

That was a lovely description of something that I agree with Obi-Wan about. I liked that Obi was telling about how he wanted to make a difference and serve the Force when he died. I guess he got his wish after all.

Great job.

Well, then. I always suspected that it would end something like this, and why not? I believe our favorite padawan has learned a lot on this mission and grown up a lot.

The Living Gift going "home" is, really, not any different from the Jedi going home "into the Force." It is not something usually pursued actively, of course.

The Padawan chewed at his lip for a moment, his eyes straying out the window to look at the sky beyond. “I fear…I fear that my death won’t mean anything. I want to spend my life doing the will of the Force, and when it comes time for me to die, I want my death to serve the Force as well.” He snorted softly and shook his head. “That’s silly, isn’t it?” He rubbed at his eyes. “It seems vain, now that I think of it.” he added severely. “It is wrong.”

“It is human,” Ilbin corrected him, reaching out to touch him lightly on the hand. “We all want to feel like we made a difference, no matter how small. You want your death, as well as your life, to serve something you believe in, that’s all. That is a noble thing to wish for, Obi-Wan.”

“Yes, that’s it,” Obi-Wan said with relief. “You said it exactly what I meant to say. I want to know I made a difference – no matter how or when I become one with the Force.”

The Living Gift and the Jedi shared a look of understanding, each taking comfort from this moment in their own way.

A lovely story with much to ponder.
