It took me yesterday and today to read all the chapters that I have miised, but it was worth it. grin I really like the way things are going, especially the mention of KOTOR comics. I still haven't read them all, but that it good because then it makes this story more interesting.
Good jobb, btw. grin

Excellent update. The Loremaster is very wise and extremely interesting with his cryptic words.

“Sometimes I wonder where the line between the Force ends and our dumb luck begins...” Malak's words trailed off as his hand darted to his side.

This line was just perfect. It is certainly something to make you think grin

Cheers,
Wyo

Jedi_Drizzt and Will_of_the_Sith: It's nice to know you both enjoyed the latest offering.

Svebor: Welcome back, it's great to have you around again. A few months ago, during the first ten chapters, I was worried I had lost the interest of my first readers. Now that Ulic and you are back it makes me feel much better. I know the real life can interfere sometimes, it certainly has with me on occassion. I'm glad you have enjoyed catching up.

WyoJedi: I'm glad I can create a few memorable lines and characters for you every now and then. Thanks for your comments.

Here is the next little bit. Enjoy.

Twenty-Nine

Siskeen, Outer Rim

“Refreshment sir?”

“I'm fine, thank you.”

“But mistress Azure specifically instructed me to ensure that you remain so. If you take no refreshment you cannot remain so and I will be failing in my duties. I am not programmed to handle...”

Rais raised his brow. “BV! That will be all for now.”

“As you wish master Rais.”

He turned to make certain that the droid was leaving the cabin. If he wasn't Azure's droid, he would have raised his hand raised instead of his brow and BV-83 would have found himself a victim of a violent Force push. The droid had hounded him relentlessly the entire trip from Ryloth.

BV exited, and the sound of his servomotors died down. Rais turned back to the forward viewport. To his side Lorn was reclining in the pilot's seat, a wide grin was spreading across his face. “Do all droids elicit such a reaction from you Rais?” Lorn reclined further. “If you weren't the calm, collected Jedi we all know that you are, I'd wager your emotions are bordering on annoyance.”

“Droids, mystical Twi'leks, they all can get under your skin from time to time.”

“We've only been in orbit two hours.”

“And we're no closer to finding this accursed breath than when we arrived.”

“Patience youngone.” Antil said as he entered the cockpit. “The loremaster's direction may have bathed a bit too much in symbolism, but he was correct when he advised you on that principle.”

“I'm sorry Master.”

“Things don't always flow easily Rais, even given our connection with the Force. It's how we react in these times that determines our true character.”

“Yes Master. But, we've searched every scrap of Twi'lek legend we downloaded from Kala'uun's archives. Every entry about Antiare mentions his legendary hunting prowess, and all fail to mention anything about his breath.”

“Yes we have searched the lore of the Twi'leks. Which means our answer to this mystery lies elsewhere.” Antil waved his hand to the stars beyond. “Like the ancient travelers of legend who relied on the stars to guide them in their path, we rely on a...”

Both Rais and Lorn sat up in their seats and began entering data into the console. As a black field was drawn up on the screen, Rais turned in his seat. “Thank you Master,”

“Your words of wisdom were just what we needed.” Lorn finished the sentence.

Antil leaned forward. “Constellations?”

Rais smiled. “Antiare.”

Lorn pulled his seat closer. “Based on the scan of the stars we took, this was his position when we left Ryloth. This is his location here at Siskeen where,”

“The hunter has grown tired and exhaled a great breath.” Rais motioned to a small trail of green in the distance.

Lorn hand moved over the console magnifying that particular section of the viewport. A sprawling green nebula filled the transparisteel before them. “We have preliminary data coming in already.” His eyes lowered to the display. “It looks to be largely impenetrable. The dust is too tightly packed. The sensors are unable to get any readings after a few million kilometers. Looks like the ideal location for that cloaked world of ours.”

Antil took a seat. “It's nice to know I can still be of some help in my advanced age.”

“I'm running an assessment of possible entry points. We should have the results in a few minutes.”

“I have one already Rais, take a look at this.”

Rais moved and leaned in over Lorn's shoulder. “It's almost as if they form an entry corridor right into the mists. I've never seen stars in this kind of arrangement before.”

“Neither have I. Based on the density of the nebula and the proximity of the stars, there is no way to avoid the stellar winds. Primary calculations estimate the ionized hydrogen emitted by the stars travels in excess of ten thousand kilometers per second.”

“I think it safe to say that that classifies as the winds of death.” Rais returned to his seat.

“What do you say Master Roon?”

“I don't know what you are asking me for, Lorn. I'm just here to enjoy the show.”

***

“We've lost the sensors Lorn, there's too much magnetic interference from the winds.”

Lorn smiled and slammed the throttle hard to starboard. “They weren't giving us anything useful anyways.” The Lodestar was blown to the left. The nearest star in the viewport rapidly increased in size. “These bursts are too unpredictable.” Slowly, the ship prevailed against the winds.

“It's a wonder the ancient voyagers ever made it through the corridor. I don't see how they ever mapped it.”

Antil sat forward. “I've seen a few things in my day Rais. We aren't the first civilization to be possessed with technology.” The ship took a hard jolt and sailed to the right. “And we won't be the last.”

Another blast caused the straps in Rais' seat to strain. A metallic voice sounded from the rear of the ship. “Oh dear.”

“I think I know what caused the ends of those civilizations Master. Perhaps I better unstrap him before our civilization finds its end.”

“There is an easier way Rais.” Antil closed his eyes as the ship rocked back and forth. Suddenly the cries from the rear cabin were cutoff mid-sentence. “They do have power switches you know.”

“Yes Master, but like a bad bantha burger, he's sure to return.”

Lorn's knuckles grew white. “Your words couldn't be any more timely Rais. I think we're about what little lunch we've had.”

In the distance Rais saw thousands of tiny specs of brown oscillating back and forth between stars. “Asteroids?”

Antil nodded. “The pass of the thundering stones. I can certainly see why the Twi'leks referred to this world as their sister. The path alone bears enough similarities to Ryloth. First the winds and now a different twist on the floating gardens.”

Lorn diverted some of their ship's thruster power to the shields. “Here's hoping we can admire this natural wonder from a safe distance as well.”

As they neared, the field drew more distinct. Rais' original estimate of their peril was slightly off. There were millions of fragments strewn before them, each moving with its own particular motion. Rais watched as Lorn tried to match the flow of the stones directly before them.

Lorn punched the throttle and they split between two mountainous stones about to impact each other. “I'll wager this was easier when Zhar's ancestors traveled the stars a thousand generations ago.” Lorn's voice strained as he rapidly pulled back on the throttle. “Two hundred thousands years of collisions can certainly increase the difficulty.”

Lorn inverted the Lodestar as a stone twice the size of their ship sailed towards the viewport. He dove through the field. Multiple small clanks could be heard about the hull as several fist size rocks found their way past the shields. Ahead, all of the asteroids before them sailed left as the nearest star unleashed another furious gust. The stones sailed back as the opposing star returned the favor. Lorn did his best to maintain the middle position but a dull thud on the outer hull of the ship told Rais his longtime friend was less than successful.

“So much for keeping Azure's promise.”

The cockpit darkened. “It's better to hit the small ones Rais. I'm only worried about the big...”

The metallic sound of clanging buckles filled the cabin. Rais and Antil found themselves pushing off against the ceiling as Lorn took the craft into a steep dive. Rais grasped the frame of the door and pulled himself out of the cockpit. The ship changed course again and he slammed into the deck plating. “How many of them Lorn!” His hands found the ladder.

“Sensors are still out, but I sense at least sixty.”

As he climbed, Rais looked down and watched Antil disappear below deck. Rais picked up the dusty headset lying to his side. “I'm in.”

“So am I Lorn.”

Rais' head swam as Lorn brought the ship about in a tight loop. Through his octagonal viewport Rais spied sixteen fighters directly ahead. They were divided into four groups. Another three groups were coming in at twenty degrees. The first wave fired. Rais anticipated Lorn's barrel roll and directed his shots to the left of the targets. Two bursts of flame lit the surrounding asteroids. A split second later another ship exploded as Antil's blasts found their target. “Deal with this type before Lorn?”

“Yes, thankfully. At least we know we're on the right course.” Lorn slipped the ship through a stream of fire as the attackers' blasts converged.

A burst of wind from behind sent them rocketing past their foe. Rais rotated his turret in line with the ships now slowed by the wind. His blasts clipped the wing of an interior fighter. It spun outwards into the path of another craft which maneuvered out of the way and into an oncoming asteroid.

Rais didn't have time to congratulate himself on his marksmanship. The second series of fighters was closing in from behind. The winds increased sending the Lodestar even closer to the corona of an opposing star. A stream of green fire erupted from the ships. Rais knew the pilots' vision was impaired due to the present course. He hoped their foe hadn't managed to make their sensors operational over the years.

The streams found one of the larger asteroids beyond the ship. Rais' vision was blurred as Lorn spun the ship continuously through the ensuing cluster of small rocks, several of which knocked against Rais' targeting viewport. Rais shut his eyes and his hands left the controls. His hands waved and two more craft vanished from his perceptions. His hands returned as Lorn began to angle the ship away from the star they were heading towards. Lorn dipped the ship beneath a five kilometer wide asteroid. The attackers rounded the crest and increased their velocity.

They traveled the length of the asteroid. As Lorn slipped through another stream, the ship shuddered slightly. “For all the good it was doing us, there goes the sensor array.” The ship began to lift above a large mound of rock directly in front of them.

Rais found his breath leaving him and a pain entering his head. He opened his eyes. Multiples lines now ran down the course of his viewport. “Careful Lorn, you almost lost me.”

“Judging by the way you were tossing around those asteroids back there, I thought you might be more effective outside the ship.”

The latest gust had lessened the number of attackers, but Rais could still make out at least seven craft in pursuit. Their fire was drawing closer. Instead of evading their fire by looping away from the asteroid, Lorn rolled the ship and brought it in closer to the great rock. This time the protest was from Antil. “Hey watch it Lorn. I'm perfectly comfortable inside the ship.”

“Suit yourselves.” Lorn banked suddenly through six streams of fire. Behind, one more attacker vanished. The ship twisted giving both gunners a view of their prey as it looped around the asteroid. The remaining pursuers were dissipated.

“We're not out of this yet. Don't get cocky.” The Lodestar slowed as it pushed against the stellar winds of one of the largest stars. In the distance, at least thirty craft were coming in rapidly. Rais shut his eyes as Lorn brought them directly into the light. A popping noise sounded and Lorn fired the forward guns. A fraction of an instant later, the light diminished.

“Nice flying Lorn.”

“Thanks Master, let's hope it buys us the time we need.”

Rais opened his eyes to view a small asteroid only slightly larger than the ship filling the viewport. To his left a small explosion concluded. “What was that Lorn?”

“One of the escape pods met an untimely end.” The streaking forms of several fighters raced past the area of the explosion. “I think they realize that wasn't us. Watch the stern.” Their ship broke from their cover just as another burst of wind caught hold of the stone. Several exhaust trails shone in the distance as the fighters changed course. “We have a bit of a lead. Let's take as many of them out as we can.”

Soon the only sound in Rais' ears was the firing of lasers as he became one with his weapon. Explosions dotted the distance.

“We've got a fresh group coming in fifty degrees to starboard. Looks like there are at least forty of them.” A wide net of green filled Rais' viewport. Rais lost the view as Lorn ducked the ship into a small opening in one of the larger asteroids. They emerged from the tunnel to find three large stones hurtling towards them. Lorn forced the ship through the only possible gap. After an uncomfortable sound and the strain of their harnesses, they found themselves in the open once more.

Rais began to swivel his turret in the direction of another attacker. He failed to find his target. His straps strained again as a cross current of wind caught the ship and slammed them into one of the passing rocks. From his angle Rais could just make out the tops of the first group of fighters coming into attack range. The ship shuddered and the sound of an explosion ripped throughout the vessel.

“We're down to one thruster.” The ship pulled away from the asteroid, momentarily blocking the attackers. “Now is the time for anything you've been holding in reserve.”

“Same goes for you Lorn.” Rais brought his guns about. The first set of ships rounded their cover and found a series of blasts waiting for them. Four ships were instantly vaporized. More than forty successfully made the turn. Rais' hand followed the Lodestar's spin as Lorn brought them into a tight corkscrew. Dozens of asteroids flashed past.

Rais caught a hint of several explosions behind them as the fighters unsuccessfully tried to follow, but he couldn't see the remaining attackers amidst the cluster they found themselves in. Still, his turret hammered out the blasts. Still, the fighters found themselves in his weapon's path.

Lorn abandoned the corkscrew as a large rock rose up in the viewport. He began to pull up. There was a sudden burst of wind. The Lodestar slammed into the surface. Rais' eyes darkened. In the darkness the ship groaned. Rais blinked and watched as the multitude of asteroids they had just maneuvered past slammed into their larger cousin. His ears were filled with the sound of the ship's alarms. Beyond at least twenty fighters were bearing down on their location.

The sounds and the sights of the galaxy vanished. Rais found himself on an empty plain. He found himself with Lorn. They found themselves before the loremaster's pillar. The two of them lifted their arms. The winds obeyed their commands.

Rais shook away the aching pain in his head and opened his eyes. The scattered wreckage of the fighters lay before them. “Thanks Rais, I couldn't have done it without you.”

“That's nice Lorn, but what did we do?”

“The two of you sent those rocks sailing back at them. It was as impressive a display as I've ever felt. I was about to ask you how it looked Rais.”

“I wish I knew Master. I believe I lost consciousness.”

“In whatever state you were in Rais, you were there for us.” Lorn's voice sounded in his ear.

“Speaking of states Lorn, how is the ship?”

“I think she'll fly Master Roon. I only hope this world we're after is close by. We're low on power and these winds take an awful lot out of the engines.”

“I don't sense any more fighters in the vicinity. I think Rais and I will join you in the cabin.”

By the time they had arrived. Lorn had managed to lift the ship from its rocky berth. Another burst of wind sent them precariously close to impact again.

“Do you think she'll make it Lorn?”

“You promised Azure that she would Rais. So she will.” Lorn engaged the remaining drive. From what Rais could tell, they were more than halfway through the asteroid field. Beyond, the light of a hundred stars shown dimly against a backdrop of green.

As they neared the edge of the field, their eyes were drawn to a tiny pinprick of traveling light. Lorn brought up the magnification again.

Rais stepped forward and a chill ran the length of his spine. “Just as it was in the vision. Somehow, seeing it in person doesn't seem real.” They cleared the asteroids and Lorn diverted the shield's power to the engine.

After a lengthy journey without the benefit of hyperspace they approached the system the comet was currently traveling. The world of vision lay directly before them. It's lit side was a mere crescent in the viewport. “Take us in on the light side Lorn. In my vision, they were massed in the darkness.”

Lorn's hand directed the ship away leading them into a high orbit in the upper atmosphere. Before they reached the day side, the yoke began vibrating in his hand and the ship's alarms erupted once more. The whole ship began to shake. “Tractor beam!” Lorn's arms strained as he tried to coax every last bit of energy from their lone thruster. He abandoned the effort and shook his head. “This ship isn't going to make it.”

A light flame lit the cone of the ship as they entered the lower atmosphere. Lorn began moving towards the rear of the vessel. Antil called from the cabin. “Lorn?”

“We still have one good pod at our disposal.” Lorn activated the hatch at the ship's midpoint.

Antil ran to his side. “We're too close to the surface.”

“Exactly, they won't have time for a second tractor lock. I've managed something similar recently Master Roon. You'll just have to trust me.”

“We do Lorn.” Rais entered the narrow tube followed by Antil and then Lorn.

The outer hatch sealed. The three of them covered their ears as an explosion expelled their pod from the craft. Rais could not see what Lorn was doing, but he could feel him drawing heavily on the Force. The pod began to wobble. Rais found himself knocking against one wall and then the other. They began to spin. Rais could faintly make out the green hues of the nebula beyond. He could make out the outlines of a canyon below. They hit, and Rais could not make out anything. A large cloud of dust rose from a new crater and blocked out what faint light there was on this unknown world.

Dantooine, Outer Rim

Atris' ship passed gently through the clouds. Her hands rested lightly on the controls as she directed their flight a few hundred meters above the green fields below and within sight of the Jedi Enclave. There wasn't much time to take in the simple beauty of the world before Atris had begun the landing procedure. A thin cloud of dust was unsettled as the ship touched ground. The Jedi Master turned to Azure. “I must speak to the Enclave Council about your training. Master Tokare has arranged for a padawan to escort you to your quarters.”

The view surrounding the ship was that of a small courtyard lined with light-colored stone walls. Azure turned from the viewport and entered the main corridor. She knelt before a small footlocker and removed the small satchel she had been carrying since Coruscant. Above her, Atris depressed a switch lowering the boarding ramp and the two departed the ship together. The air felt crisp and clean against her skin. There was still a hint of the morning mist in the breeze.

A brown haired teenage girl emerged from a small portal and approached the ship. “Azure Skrit?” The girl asked in a voice more mature and refined than Azure had expected. “I have been instructed by the Council to show you to your quarters.” Atris nodded and Azure left her side. She followed the girl through the portal.

After two quick turns, the corridor they traveled opened into a wide atrium with a single tree in the center. The girl failed to take in the sight. And so did Azure; her eyes lingered on the sky above and the numerous worlds it concealed outside its blue covering. The girl smiled and headed for an opening directly opposite them. They entered the enclosed space and followed the hallway leading them past a series of doors. The young woman entered a short sequence into the keypad of the last door and it slid open with a distinctive hiss.

“This will be your room for the time being Azure. Feel free to make yourself comfortable. I understand that the Council will be calling for you within the hour. If you need anything in the meantime, you can pull up a directory listing the comm frequencies of all the students here at this terminal. Simply search for my name, Bastila Shan.”

Well, I finally got a chance to read this update. Wonderful by the way. grin

The space battle was so well done, and their arrival at the planet was great as well. I am always impressed with the powerful personalities that you are infusing into Lorn and Rais. See I'm not even calling them Revan and Malak... they are a unique take on the canon versions.

And the appearance of Bastila was so great! She's always been one of my favorite KotOR characters, so it was so good to see her used here.

Cheers,
Wyo

WyoJedi: They have taken on their own personalities for me as well. I don't think I'll ever play KOTOR in quite the same way again (or KOTOR II for that matter...). Thanks for the compliment on the space battle. As for Bastila, she'll get some "screen time" every now and then as these stories progress, but I'm not sure how much. But I do like her character a lot.

noevilmusic: I'm happy to know I conveyed the ship combat well enough to follow. Now if I could only do the same for the current chapter.

I think this next chapter is still going to take some more time, it is proving to be extremely difficult to write. I hope to have it up by the end of the week, but I'm not making any promises.

In the meantime, I don't know how many of you noticed my contribution to the OC Silly Survey thread, but I posted there a few weeks ago. If you follow the link you can find out a little more about the sadly departed Merk.

Will_of_the_Sith and Svebor: It's nice to know that you liked the last chapter. Thanks for reading.

After overcoming a recent writing struggle, here is the latest offering. Enjoy!

Thirty

Unknown World, Outer Rim

The armored figure sprinted through the compound. About him the sounds of the great furnaces bellowed in the deep. The world's single moon passed behind the Nurisk Mountains and the walls of the buildings took on the scarce light of the surrounding nebula casting the camp in a faint, yet eerie, green hue. He rushed on without the need for moonlight, his feet carrying him on, and up the steps leading of the elegant edifice.

As he entered he found the building darker than the world outside and the air thicker. His footfalls came slower as he crossed the expansive hallway. He drew aside the great curtain at its end and his eyes adjusted to the radiance beyond. The great blur of light resolved into the gentle flicker of fifteen candles arranged in a small circle. From their midst a man rose, adorned in red and gold. His masked visage turned to face him.

“Lord Mandalore, we have captured the ship. We believe it passed through the flaming corridor. It bears the signs of battle.” He waited for a response, none came. “The ship is empty my lord. Its escape pod jettisoned less than two kilometers above the surface.”

The chamber was filled with a voice befitting the great frame. “Hunt them down General Servoss.”

“But sir, at that altitude there could have been no survivors.”

“The Jedi survive.”

“Jedi, my lord?”

“Lord Cerax has failed to report in. He was a powerful emissary, General, it could be no one else. Send your squads to investigate the crash site. Eliminate them.”

“Yes, Lord Mandalore.”

“We must also deal with the other aspect of Lord Cerax's failure. Telos still stands.”

“Then what of the invasion?”

“We must be flexible if we are to succeed Jantus. Assemble the War Council.” Mandalore began to walk the outskirts of the circle. “If our plans are so easily spoiled then we are not worthy to command the fleet we have amassed. This provides us with the opportunity to prove our worth.” His red visor leveled its gaze at his subordinate. “You are dismissed Jantus.”

“Yes, my lord” The general bowed and departed. As he drew the curtain he cursed silently. He would not let the Jedi interfere with his plans. They would pay for delaying the invasion and his ascension to clan head.

***

“Master, are you sure you're all right?”

“It's still only a small fracture Rais. The last five minutes haven't changed that fact.” Antil patted Rais firmly on the shoulder. “Don't worry about me, I'll mend in a few days. For now, we need to put as much distance between ourselves and the pod as we can.”

“I could carry you Master.”

“The offer is appreciated, but you are in nearly as worse shape as I am. We may even travel slower as a result. Our chance of survival is thin as it is considering we'll soon have an entire planet after us.”

“You know I don't like that Master. Never tell me the odds.”

Ahead of their location Lorn stopped and held up his hand. His eyes rose to the rim of the canyon. He turned as a light rumble echoed off the canyon walls. Thunder. “This storm will make it difficult to hear any approaching search teams. Keep your senses sharp.”

The first pricklings of rain struck his uncovered face. Lorn raised his cowl. A few minutes later he wasn't sure it had done any good. The water was seeping through the coarse material. He brushed aside a large drop of water about to drip from a strand of his thick dark hair. He lifted his hood and slicked his hair back. A cold shot of water drizzled down his back.

The rain intensified and they found themselves negotiating a thick muddy soup. Rais looked behind them as a thunderclap split the air. Lorn stepped to his side. “I sense them too.”

“And we're leaving tracks Lorn.”

Lorn pulled on a jagged slab of rock. The rock held but his hand nearly slipped off the smooth, slick surface. “Are you able to climb Master Roon?”

“You want to risk the open plain?”

“I don't feel like being hunted down in a narrow canyon. On the plain we may be more visible, but at least we have more options up there.”

After a few minutes of hanging and searching for the proper grips, Rais was the first to reach the rim. He offered his hands and pulled the other two Jedi to the top. Their three heads turned about the plain. Lorn shrugged his shoulders and began to move away from the canyon. A flash of lightning revealed a wide sweeping expanse covered now in small rivulets and rushing streams charting the swiftest course to the canyons below. A few minutes after their ascent, the ground before their feet vanished as the clouds finally passed overhead.

“This world certainly has a strange feeling about it. I think I'm beginning to understand how the Mandalorian mystics felt those many years ago. This is a perfect world for the self-proclaimed Shadow Warriors. The darkness feels palpable.”

“This is but a taste of the darkness that will come to the galaxy if we fail in our task. If we do, the feelings you have now will be felt by all.” Lorn stopped and scanned the horizon. “You are right about the world though Rais. Something else is at work here, behind the darkness.”

Antil pulled his tunic in closer. “What do you mean Lorn?”

“I wish I knew Master.”

The wind's invisible hand intensified its push and the blackened clouds raced across the sky. The rain came in horizontal sheets as the Jedi attempted to cross the plain. The darkness seemed to grow deeper. Lorn's senses became troubled.

It started as a soft purr beyond the hearing of most humans, now it was a distinctive hum.

Lorn turned in the direction of the noise. Rais stepped to his side. “Speeders.” He began tugging at Lorn's cloak. “They're heading straight for us. They must have infrared scopes.”

Lorn nodded his head and followed. “Either that or they are tracking us through the Force.”

“Can you feel something Lorn?”

“Nothing now Master...just the past.”

Antil's voice sounded from the darkness a few meters away. “If my aged senses are correct, there is an outcropping near the edge of the canyon. It's unlikely their scopes will be able to detect us there.”

A flare of light proved Antil's senses correct. The three companions rushed behind a collection of boulders and small pillars and waited. The hum intensified into a sharp whine. Lorn's hands rubbed the metallic cylinders at his sides. The lightning struck the formation highlighting the three rain-soaked Jedi. They exchanged quick glances. The world was black once more.

Rais vaulted into the air. Lorn lost him in the darkness. A speeder lost its pilot. Rais rolled. A blue beam extended through the downed pilot's gut and then up into the fuselage of an oncoming vehicle. Rais dove to the side as the bike, and rider, erupted in flames. The blue blade vanished as did the storm-drowned fire.

Two green blades carved through the air and disappeared. Multiple rounds of blaster fire sailed in their last location and found no mark. A brief scream sounded to the right and there was a glimmer of yellow. The sky was filled with light. Shadows passed among the rocks. Blasters were leveled but found no being.

The engines were silenced and the remaining men formed into a tight circle. A figure rose from the midst of the ring. The lightning flashed. His dark cowl hid his face from view as he extended his arms. Three quick bolts from the sky illuminated the plain. The circle was gone.

Lorn joined Rais behind the pillars. “That just the first wave. They know we're here.”

Rais planted his back firmly against the stone. The water coursed off his exposed head and off his fully-soaked body suit. “More are coming already.”

Antil edged closer. “And more will come after that.”

“And they and those who follow will find my blades waiting for them, Master Roon.”

Antil placed his hand softly on Lorn's shoulder. “I know they will. Your hands grasp valiant blades Lorn. Be sure to wield them for the right reasons.”

“I know, and I will Master.” But will I? Lorn began to wipe his hands on his tunic. Suddenly, he couldn't rid his mind of that twisted form.

The air was filled with noise as a speeder zipped past their location bringing Lorn back to the moment. From behind their cover Rais reached out with the Force and pulled the pilot from his craft. As the man fell a blue lightsaber pierced him just below his neck.

Antil closed his eyes and moved two small boulders. The Master removed two riders from their bikes. He dove to the side as a third bore down on his location. A pair of blaster bolts tore through his cloak.

A pair of green beams emerged from behind a pillar cutting a bike into three sections. They were drawn back as a volley of fire hit the stone. A great bolt of electricity arced across the sky as eleven bikes passed into the formations. Rais ran. He slipped on the stone and a single shot hit his tan body armor. Another grazed his side. He slid behind the nearest mound.

Lorn sensed several objects sailing towards Rais. He sensed Rais standing. Lorn's blades left his hands. Blaster fire lit the forever night of the world. Rais' hand stretched outwards. Lorn's blades intercepted the energy beams. The objects exploded. The explosion was driven back.

Antil darted from his cover. The Mandalorians' attention was still drawn to the explosion. His blade split armor. The Mandalorians turned their blasters inward. Antil flipped above their fire. Rais charged. His blade found flesh. Lorn's blades found his hands in the center of the fray. All fell before the two Jedi.

They reached the center of the formation back to back. “You'll have to teach me that power sometime Rais.”

“I will, as soon as I learn how I am doing it. Perhaps you should ask Lucien. I think I stole the ability from him.”

“The fewer conversations I can have with that man the better. If that's what it takes, then perhaps that is one power I can forego.”

They concealed themselves in the rocks as another wave of bikes approached. The lead rider fully engaged his engines and sailed into the outcroppings. His weapons sung. Rais flung his blade and just missed as the rider darted between two boulders and shot into the distance.

Rais leapt to the top of a pillar and called his extinguished weapon to his hand. Thunder ripped through the air. He dropped from the height, his legs sailing outwards and knocking off two armored companions riding in tandem. The momentum from the impact knocked him back. He rose with the noise of another speeder bearing down on his location. He jumped and his foot caught on the nose of the craft. His intended flip was cut short as he somersaulted and knocked against the rider. His arms wrapped around the pilot and the two of them fell hard to the soaking floor of the plain. The bike exploded as it hit a mass of stones towards the outskirts of the formations.

Rais turned on his side and caught a hardened boot sailing towards his head. His muscles bulged. His foe found himself flying backwards. His foe's back first met Antil's boot, then Lorn's blade. One of the first downed riders found Rais'. The other Antil's. The blades retracted and all was dark once more.

A single green blade lit and deflected the incoming fire from the rounding bike Rais' weapon had missed a few seconds earlier. Lorn turned aside as the blasts ceased. The unmanned bike slid along the ground and twisted its metal frame about a pillar, cracking it.

Twisted, like the form of my helpless prisoner.

From a few hundred meters down the plain the air was pierced with more incoming fire. Rais yelled. The rock before the bike groaned. The pillar toppled across the main gap in the outcroppings. The first bike jumped the fallen stone. Rais moved his arms upwards. The bike landed much later than its rider had anticipated. As did the rider.

Lorn jumped onto the fallen pillar. The lightning silhouetting his frame. His cloak rippled in the wind. His invisible hand grasped the next bike in line. He moved his arm to the side and the bike spun, spilling its rider over the edge and into the abyss five meters to his left. Lorn followed his movement and extended his other hand. The Mandalorian hit the opposite side of the canyon and fell. A hundred meters from the man's point of impact, another group of riders were skirting the canyon rim. Lorn rushed to the edge and jumped.

A series of shots targeted the Jedi as he traveled over the canyon. Two green blades spun about both sides of the flipping form. Lorn landed safely. He faced his foe. Both weapons left his hands and twirled in harmony. Six speeders lost control and met a fiery end. Behind the vehicles, six helmeted heads rolled about the plain. As each blade found his hand again, his eyes were drawn to the horizon. The heavens flashed.

“Lorn, we can't risk it!” Though Rais shouted, his voice was scarcely audible above the storm.

On the other side of the ravine a yellow light cut the nose off a speeder sending it spiraling out of control.

The storm revealed the latest threat again, confirming Lorn's suspicion. Basilisks, the mounted war droids of the Mandalorians and the terror of worlds at the end of the Great Sith War. He watched as a series of wide searchlights lit the plain beneath the massive beasts. He leapt over the canyon once more.

Antil and Rais met him at the edge. Lorn's gaze turned downwards. He couldn't see the bottom, but he knew it must be quickly filling with water. “I agree Rais. We'll have to chance the canyon. At least we know the war droids won't be able to follow us through the narrow passages.”

Lorn plunged into the depths and Rais followed. The water spilled over the edges of their boots. The padawan called up to his master.

Antil leapt off the cliff and fell into Rais' arms. “And I thought you said you wanted to carry me Rais. From the look on your face, I think you enjoyed carrying your last passenger more.”

“You can't even see my face, Master.” Rais lowered him to the ground.

“And who was that passenger Rais?” Lorn asked.

Lorn could just make out Antil's smile as he spoke. “Azure.”

“You can't blame the young man Master Roon. I'd like to try that out for myself sometime. My last passenger was an overweight quadrant chief.” Lorn began running in the direction of the escape pod. He looked over his shoulder and his expression changed. “Hurry.”

Well done, I like how the three of them are extremely powerful but not invincible and eventually have to withdraw.

Very good indeed. Your progress with the charaters is admirable and I also liked the action.
However, one thing came to my mind. You wrote that Mandalorians call their leader and their officers Lord. I do not recall reading or hearing that anywhere. In comics, the entitle Mandalore with simple Sir.
Did you write that on purpose? If so, it is good, but if you are planning to follow the canon you should look out for that. Just an advice.

noevilmusic: Thanks, I've never held the view that the Jedi are invincible. Sometimes the EU portrays that they are, but I think events like the arena on Geonosis show otherwise.

Svebor: I've tried to include little references like that throughout. Such as a few chapters back Merk saying "look at the size of that thing" just as Wedge does. And I'm glad you liked the action.

Ulic_Starwalker: Thanks for drawing that to my attention. I want to keep this story as much in line with the EU as possible. I've seen a lot of people on the boards call Mandalore lord, but I think you are right when you say that the Mandalorians don't call him that. I'm going to have to look into that. As for the other reference to Lord, I think I have been too subtle. Cerax was not a Mandalorian, he was an emissary, and was the powerful Force user Revan destroyed back on Citadel. I'll leave it at that.

And here for one and all is chapter 31. Enjoy!

Thirty-One

Unknown World, Outer Rim

The lights flashed past overhead. The threat Antil Roon was concerned about, however, was from behind. The noise in the canyon became a deafening roar. The glimmer of the exhaust trails shone in the distance. He ran on alone.

The canyon turned and Antil took up a position fifteen meters from the bend. His yellow blade extended before his face casting his graying hair in a golden hue. His muscles tensed and he adjusted his stance. He stood there unmovable in the pelting fury of the storm.

The speeders rounded the corner. He deflected the first blasts. He remained in place. The bikes accelerated. His nose caught the first hint of exhaust. Antil executed a side flip despite his injury and landed against the canyon walls. He pushed off and propelled himself through the air. The last of the bikes came into view. Lorn and Rais leapt from their perch. Three bikes were split in two. Antil landed behind the speeders. Down the canyon a series of stones rose and sailed into the remaining bikes.

The Jedi returned their blades to their sides and ran past the jumbled wreckage. The Force guided their movements through the puddles and pools and the sharp rocks of the canyon floor. Ahead, beyond another bend, a faint halo of light was creeping around the canyon's corner. The Jedi pressed their bodies against the rock as the walls of the canyon rumbled once more. A light shone briefly over the location of their previous encounter a half-kilometer down the canyon. It rested there for a moment and moved away from their current location.

Antil moved under a narrow ledge and peered around the rock wall. The light shone about an entryway carved into the stone at the junction of another canyon. Both canyons were much wider here than the narrow passes they had moved through previously. In the center of the path, a small stream was overflowing its bank. Rais and Lorn joined him at the corner moving through a thin waterfall created by the covering and the storm. “More are coming. And some are already here.” Antil's eyes searched the stones, but he could gain no sight of the presences he felt.

“We don't have time. We're being hedged in from all sides.” Lorn rushed into the light and lit his blades. He turned about slowly in a circle. From behind a red blast shot from the stones. Red met green and green prevailed. The blast was deflected into the canyon wall leaving a small scorch mark. The other Jedi joined him in front of the opening. Lorn kept his eyes on the wall. “Stealth field generators.”

Rais drew his blade. “Well, let's even the odds.” His weapon sailed from his hand. The light of the small base erupted in a shower of sparks and the canyon was dark once more. The unseen presences shifted. Rais called his blade to his hand. The Jedi moved through the darkness.

Rais' blade swept high. Next to him electricity snapped about a blue suit as it appeared out of thin air. Both it and its attendant helmet fell to the muddy floor. Shots rang out and found only rock.

Antil's blade extended through a rushing foe. The man's momentum carried him into the Jedi Master and sent the two falling into the stream. Antil pushed the man away and kicked outwards against an invisible shin. A cry sounded as a knee snapped backwards. It was cut short by a green beam slicing through a neck. Lorn dodged left avoiding a fist and ducked under another. His foot delivered a powerful back kick to the head belonging to the first punch. The yellow blade sliced through the abdomen of the second. Lorn left the master's side.

Antil's tunic fluttered about him. At the rim of the ravine a light danced across the edge. The canyon roared. The Jedi ran away from the noise as a winged war droid of their foe descended. Scarlet light lit the watery ground about their feet. Before them in the distance another basilisk entered the canyon. Its side ignited. A piercing shrill sounded. Rais grabbed his master by the cloak and dove into a pool of water. The missile struck the ground behind them.

Antil rose to see Lorn standing in the midst of two closing droids. Their great lasers fired. Lorn fell on his back. The blasts from the first sailed over his head as he brought his two blades together. The blasts from the second found his combined beams and ricocheted into one of the two dorsal wings of the other basilisk. The droid spun and narrowly missed crashing into the canyon wall. Lorn rolled to his side. Steaming pools of mud erupted from the ground as the functioning basilisk continued the onslaught. The pilot of the other brought his craft successfully out of the ravine.

Rais jumped against the canyon wall and launched himself into the air. His hand caught hold of a ribbed hose just above the rear leg of the droid. He planted his feet and set his grip. Rais spun about the beast. His feet crunched against the helmet of the rider. The man remained harnessed, but Rais' blade split his chest open. The droid plunged into the depths. Rais leapt for safety and landed to Antil's side. Antil's blade sliced through the air and through the midsection of another invisible attacker.

They ran. Lorn trailed slightly behind. Two more unseen attackers were blocking their path ahead. Lorn threw the men to either side. Their bodies flashed as armor met stone and they fell into darkness. The canyon was filled with noise. Antil turned. Three war droids entered the canyon behind them. Their forward lasers streaked the floor. Lorn jumped above one stream and darted below the next. The droids swiveled from side to side trying to eliminate any safe path.

Three missiles left their berths. The lasers continued. The ground before Lorn's feet exploded. A body hit. An arm snapped. Lorn tumbled down the canyon wall and into the water. His head rose above the surface and then his body. He ran. His arm swung wildly. A green light extended from his hand. Sparks lit. Another hidden foe was revealed. Lasers passed on either side of Lorn's head.

Rais stopped and turned. The lightning flashed once more revealing a hardened face. He pushed. The lead basilisk flew to the side. The pilot pulled up scraping the edge of the canyon. Lorn sprinted through a shower of rocks and dove. Another missile hit the canyon wall sending a second shower of rocks tumbling down about him.

Antil ran towards him throwing his arms outwards. The rocks flew through the air and into the second craft. A rock struck Antil's shoulder. He plunged beneath the water. His breath left him. The weight on his back receded. A single hands found his tunic and pulled him to the surface.

In the distance Rais charged the remaining droid. His legs propelled him through the air. He landed on pointed nose. The pilot jerked his ship to the side. Rais lost his footing. He threw his blade. The jagged stones of the canyon tore at his lower back. His body armor slid against his neck. The basilisk crashed against the canyon wall freeing the stones that held the young Jedi. Rais fell to the canyon floor. The blood from his back quickly mixed with the rushing water of the stream.

The thunder clapped and the canyon filled with sound. The echo of the thunder was replaced by the humming of engines. Three bikes sailed over the fallen war droids. Rais turned towards the noise. Lorn yelled and ran towards the speeders. He threw his good arm outward. The first bike flew to the side faster than it had traveled forward and exploded against the stone. Lorn threw both arms outwards, his injured arm sailing at an awkward angle. The remaining bikes were destroyed.

Lorn pulled Rais from the stream. “Are you all right Rais?”

“Are you? Your arm is broken.”

They turned towards Antil as he walked towards them. He did his best to maintain a steady pace, but it was becoming more difficult with each step. His hand moved aside the fabric on his shoulder. The flaming husks of the droids gave enough light for him to see. His shoulder and much of his back was purple. The rain washed away the blood that dripped from the wound. He coughed and expelled a portion of the water from his lungs. Some blood was expelled as well. He could feel it filling in his stomach. His head lifted and eyed the two Jedi before them.

“Master?” Rais rushed forward.

From every avenue he sensed more soldiers incoming. The circle was tightening. “Keep moving.” The three companions traveled on. The canyon narrowed.

Antil's eyes darted skyward.

From above the rim they descended. The canyon was ablaze with sound. Rais directed the first few speeders into the wall, but like trying to hold off the rain it was a futile effort. His lightsaber ignited.

Lorn propelled himself forward on powerful legs knocking the first Mandalorian from his bike. His blades extended and ended the lives of two others. A vibrosword swung above his head. He deflected the swipe. A bike shot forward.

Antil's beam spun about his head splitting man and machine alike. Six more speeders entered the canyon from above. Their weapons fired. The blasts came in too fast and Antil dove for cover. His hand clutched at his ribs.

Rais turned his head. Ten speeders traveled along the ground. Crimson light lit the canyon floor. Lorn sprinted towards the enemy. A blast nicked his hip. Green beams returned the favor.

More bikes rounded the canyon from the other end. Rais ran. He leapt forward landing amidst the incoming riders. The blue light twirled.

Antil rose. His arm swung to the side deflecting a blade. He flipped the rider from the bike. He spun. His foot found the man's chest. He ducked. His beam swung backwards. A rider was no more. Another came in. Blasts were deflected. Riders dismounted. Fists were thrown. Arms were hewn. Rifles fired. Men fell. His breaths came heavy. An armored fist connected. A kick landed. His vision lessened. Cruel steel swung for his head. His blade met steel, his blade met flesh. Another attack came from behind. An armored foot drove him to the ground. A yellow beam shot back piercing the thigh of the Mandalorian. Antil lifted his head. His legs quavered as he stood. The armored foe advanced. He found a blue light at his side. Malak's weapon went high, Antil's went low. They continued the dance of death. The bikes roared about them.

Around the canyon, rocks flew. Explosions sounded. Men screamed. The Force was drawn upon. The sounds of battle were finally silenced leaving the familiar hum of recycling energy. The beams withdrew into metallic hilts. Shadowy faces were lit by scarce light in the distance. Antil staggered and pressed his hand against the canyon wall. His head felt light. His stomach tightened and involuntarily expelled its contents. Blood spattered the ground.

“Master!” Rais grasped his arm under the shoulder as Antil lost his balance. The padawan turned towards Lorn, his eyes widened.

“My body is broken Rais. Nothing you or Lorn can do can change that fact.”

“We have to get you to safety Master.”

“I can't run any longer Rais.”

“Then we'll make a stand.”

A craft passed overhead towards the fallen basilisks. A troop transport. Antil closed his eyes momentarily and motioned down the canyon towards the light. “Very well.” As they approached, the distant hum of several speeders could be heard. They paused before the turn. The rain lessened. The ground rumbled. Searchlights passed above. A light mist fell slowly about three faces directed skywards. Antil leaned against the wall and nodded.

Lorn and Rais broke around the corner. Two Mandalorians standing before a small cache raised their weapons. Rais stretched forth his hands and their blaster rifles were wrenched from their grasp. Rais set the weapons down. The men clutched at their throats. Lorn walked forward with arms outstretched and the men collapsed.

In the distance the hum of the speeders seemed to lessen. Rais faced the direction of the noise. “They're falling back?”

Lorn shook his head. “It's the final push.”

Antil bent down over the bodies. His eyes looked past Rais to the supply depot. The dim light fell about the explosives kept there. Rais turned and followed his gaze. His head shot back. Antil's eyes returned and met those of his padawan. “These men are about your size.”

Rais stepped forward. “Master, no.”

“Rais, we don't have a choice. The two of you must return to the Republic.”

“But...”

“Damnit Rais, we don't have the time to argue this. You are the future of the Jedi, you must survive. The Republic must survive.”

Rais turned and knelt before the men. He removed a blue helmet revealing a brown haired man with a strong jaw and pale skin. His eyes looked back to his master where they lingered. He removed the rest of the armor. Lorn was already donning his.

“Rais, clothe the bodies and place them close to the explosives. The two of you will need to leave your lightsabers behind, if we are to pull this off. With any luck there won't be any investigation.”

A man clad now in red stepped to Antil's side and placed a hand on his shoulder. His voice was distorted by the mask he now wore. “Thank you Master Roon. Rais and I won't fail you. The Republic will survive.”

“I know it will Lorn. I have one final thing to ask of you.” Roon's eyes watched the blue form of his padawan adjust the man now clad in his body suit and armor. His voice softened. “I know you have been searching for a padawan these past few years. I want you to see him to knighthood.”

“I will, Master.”

The blue figure approached them slowly. Antil looked into the blackened visor. To his eyes it still revealed the man within. “I am not leaving you Rais. I will always be with you. Listen to the Force, and listen to Lorn. He is your master now.”

“Yes, Master.”

“I'm proud of you Rais.” Antil stepped forward and the two embraced. His arms pushed Rais away. “Now go. And may the Force be with you.” The last words did not come easily.

“And with you Master.” Rais turned away.

Antil smiled as he watched the two men depart. They wouldn't fail him. The Republic would stand.

***

Rais watched as the light of the supply depot vanished behind them. As they ran his heart beat even more heavily in his chest.

“He is our only hope Rais. Our fate, as may the galaxy's, lies in his hands now.”

The darkness rose before him. The war cry sounded. From all sides the warriors descended upon the lone figure. Antil lay in the center with the galaxy in his hand. He turned to Rais and the figure approaching from behind and gave his final charge. Stop them. Rais turned to the armored figure at his side, the approaching figure he had failed to notice on the journey to Citadel. Revan's words sunk deep into his heart and he finally understood his master's true meaning. “I know Lorn. I've seen this before.” His heart rate eased. “He's laid his charge on our shoulders now. We mustn't fail him.”

“And we won't Rais.”

Ahead Rais sensed a large contingent of Mandalorians rushing in their direction. A small open tank rounded the corner carrying a man in golden armor. The light it cast allowed Rais a view of the company behind. There were at least fifty soldiers and thirty speeders.

Rais stopped as the tank pulled up before them. The man in the golden armor peered down from his seat. He yelled from his perch. “Hut'uun.” Rais probed the man's mind searching behind the word for its underlying meaning using a technique Lorn had taught him in childhood to help him understand the different beings of the galaxy.

His mind comprehended the language. “The Jedi are just around the bend, we were waiting for you to arrive.”

“You cowardly scum. You have no honor. Get to the front. You will be the first to engage the Jedi.”

The amplified hearing in Malak's suit picked up the sound of blaster fire from the depot. He and Lorn rushed at the head of the company. The depot came into view. Antil stood near the Mandalorian Jedi, his blade only a blur. He shone in the Force.

“Even the Jedi have more honor than you. See how he defends his fallen kin.”

Antil spread his free hand outwards sending several Mandalorians from the other group against the canyon wall. The other company pressed in quickly. The master's blade cut through the first few to rush in. Master Roon glanced in his direction as the new company opened fire. Antil remained standing as two blasts clipped his side. Another found his leg. His blade continued to whirl as he dropped to his knees.

Rais lifted his weapon. The scope was a blur. His arms trembled beneath his rifle. He blinked. The liquid ran down his cheek. Rais moved his weapon to the side and found his target. The scope rested on the explosives. Time stood still. Rais closed his eyes. His finger pressed the trigger.

The brilliant light that was Antil Roon was suddenly extinguished and the Force felt hollow. As the fire ripped through the canyon, Rais dropped his rifle into the rushing stream at his side. The Mandalorians cheered and rushed past. The golden figure approached. “You've salvaged some of your honor. Good kill.”

The general joined the search leaving the two Jedi where they stood. From the remains of the depot a Mandalorian called out. “General Servoss!” He held a shining hilt in his hand. Several more calls sounded about the canyon.

The general turned to his aide. “Inform Lord Mandalore the Jedi threat has been eliminated.” The crowd lifted him in the air and the general shouted. “Parjai!”

Victory.

Lorn stepped in close and spoke as the chants sounded about them. “The planet has a name now, in Republic records. In memory of his sacrifice Rais, we'll name it Roon.”
