RE: Interrupted Celebration (OC's, 500 BBY, Thriller) Updated 8th of May
Ok, here we are at chapter 18 and we're in on the final stretch. Things are getting exciting (or at least I've tried to write them that way) and I do hope you enjoy it. These final chapters have been a blast to write!
------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 18
The SBI
“Let me see if I got this right,” Paska said for the third time. “Senator Gonx Abit was part of a plot to overthrow the Chancellor,”
“He was not,” Retak protested passionately, for the third time.
“Then explain the tapes will you?” Nolvin countered with, also for the third time.
“Enough,” Bervan said with frustration, rubbing his temples as he tried to process the information they had just listened to. He took a deep breath and stood up in the middle of the room.
“All right, from the start now,” he said and clapped his hands together. “The tapes, which contained the information we’ve just heard, were found at Breecko Harr’s apartment which means it was most likely he that heard it and hid them,”
“Because he was afraid of being targeted by the Senators,” Paska filled in. “And they did…”
“So, not suicide?” Nolvin asked.
“After hearing this?” Paska said. “No, not after hearing this,”
“But no one suspicious turned up on the surveillance tapes,” Nolvin said.
“Who runs the security in that building where Harr lived?” Bervan asked.
“Easy,” Retak answered. “It’s an apartment for beings affiliated with the Senate. Security is run by the SBI,” Retaks voice trailed off and his eyes grew large as the realisation hit him and everyone else in the room.
“Isn’t this getting interesting?” Bervan said with a pleased expression on his face.
“So what can that mean?” Paska asked. “That this person made sure that the SBI failed to protect Breecko Harr and that there was no evidence?”
“Can’t be,” Nolvin grunted. “There was no failure with protection of the building and no one broke into Breecko Harr’s apartment. We have evidence to back that up,”
“Yet he turned up dead anyway,” Paska said.
“This raises a worrying prospect,” Bervan said.
“What do you mean?” Nolvin asked.
“You’re saying that the evidence proves that the SBI did its job and kept the apartment safe, yet the aide turns up murdered anyway. How does that happen?” everybody shrugged and had no idea what to answer. Bervan went on: “Someone with access to the apartments must be behind the murder. Someone within the SBI!”
“So you’re saying that…?”
“I’m saying that, if the security did not fail and no one from the outside got in, what is there stopping someone from the inside getting into the apartment?”
“You have a point,” Nolvin growled. “This is starting to stink. Starting to stink real bad,”
“So what should we do next?” Paska asked.
“I know someone at the SBI. I think we should talk to him,” Bervan said.
“Are you done with me?” Retak asked hopefully.
“Yes,” both Nolvin and Bervan answered in unison. Paska however shook his head. The hopeful gleam in Retaks eyes faded.
“There is still something that doesn’t add up,” he said, rubbing his temples. “This is a plausible explanation for the murder of the aide but what about the Senators? No more light has been shed on that,”
“Indeed,” Bervan sighed and he seemed to deflate a little. “The other voice, the distorted one, seemed capable of pulling some strings but surely he wouldn’t kill his own allies? It doesn’t make sense!”
“Actually, it does,” Retak said quietly.
“What was that?” Nolvin said hastily. “What do you know?”
“Well, this tape has certainly put some things into context,”
“Context? What kind of context?” Paska said eagerly. Retak drew a long breath and looked at everyone in the room.
“The last time I saw Breecko alive was shortly before he was murdered. He had a row with Senator Abit,”
“I remember this,” Paska said. “Senator Abit told us that. It was over payment, if I remember rightly,”
“Well, I don’t what the row was about but it certainly wasn’t about wages. Credits are never an issue,”
“The Senator lied?”
“Seems so,” Retak shrugged. “All I remember is Breecko turning up at the office, clearly agitated and bleak, as if he’s just seen a Sith. You could see some kind of fear in his eyes and he just stormed into the Senators office. Oh no, that was not about payment,”
“What happened next?”
“A shouting match ensued. Breecko was clearly worked up over something, but I couldn’t hear the words. Within minutes, security arrived, had him sedated and took him away. That was the last time I saw him alive,”
“What do you think the encounter was about?”
“As I said, I heard nothing. But the tapes put that into some context. I wouldn’t be surprised if Harr confronted Senator Abit about his role in this plot,”
“And then Harr turned up dead?” Paska asked.
“Yes, but I don’t think Senator Abit was behind it, even though Harr knew too much,”
“So, who could be behind it then?” Paska asked. Bervan and Inspector Nolvin gazed intensely at Retak.
“I think the same people that murdered Breecko Harr murdered the Senators. When Harr turned up dead, Senator Abit was greatly disturbed and within a few days he started increasing security around the office or where he lived,”
“He thought someone was after him?” Paska asked.
“Definitely. He would talk to no other Senators except Senators Oed, Le’Vis and Yap and even that ceased after a few days,”
“If he was so afraid for his life, why did he leave the security of his apartment and offices in a speeder which could be easily shot down?”
“I don’t know. He suddenly became very determined and one day took all the available aides he had, armed them and took the speeder,”
“He armed them?” Bervan exclaimed.
“Yes. Apparently he thought he needed the protection,”
“And where were you?” Paska asked but Retak did not answer. He stared down at the table and rubbed his hands together.
“Spying I guess,” Paska said, offering his guess.
“Look,” Retak said, looking up again. “This is all I know and I think that has helped you a lot,”
“He is right,” Bervan said and now turned to Nolvin. “Why haven’t you had this information?”
“To be honest, Master Jedi,” Nolvin said and squirmed uncomfortably. “We had no idea what to do and we were always told that people higher up were looking into the murder of the Senator,”
“So what does all this add up to?” Paska asked, but he seemed to know the answer judging by the grim expression on his face.
“Something is rotten with the SBI or so it would seem,” Bervan said. “Like I suggested before, I know someone there and I think its worth dropping by for a little chat,”
The three investigators nodded and thanked Retak for all of the information and left the apartment silently, carrying the tape-device. Retak was left alone in his apartment and proceeded to clean up his dinner which was spread on the floor.

The large gleaming skyscraper not far from the Senate, which signified the headquarters of the Senate Bureau of Intelligence, was one of the few buildings in the area which had been untouched by the recent unrest. Security around the building was unusually tight and even the Jedi had difficulty getting past. Surprisingly enough, it was Inspector Nolvin which ensured their entry to headquarters when he bore down on the skinny guard brandishing his law enforcement badge. At this, the Besalisk couldn’t stop chuckling until they entered the skyscraper. All three strode up to the reception where a weary-eyed receptionist eyed the odd group suspiciously.
“Yes?” she said tiredly.
“I’m here to see Executive Officer Solos Hariig. Say that it is Otis Bervan who sent for him. He’ll know who I am,”
“Sir, these are hectic days, I can’t guarantee that he’ll make it down,”
“Tell him that the future of the Republic hinges upon this meeting,”
“That wouldn’t be a first this week,” the receptionist said wearily as she contacted Hariig. She grunted down the line that someone was waiting for him and a reply came to which she grunted something before putting the receiver down.
“He’ll be here in a few minutes,” she said in a monotone voice. All three thanked her and sat down close to the entry. Across the vast entry hall, bleary eyed beings were walking as fast as they could. No one stopped to talk or to acknowledge each other. As the beings walked across the hall, they stared unfailingly straight ahead, as if they were trying to discern some kind light at the end of the tunnel.
Solos Hariig was easy to spot, far off as he was from the investigators as he entered the hall. He was the only being in the whole hall which had something resembling a smile on his somewhat flabby Sullustan face.
“Otis!” he said, voice full with guttural enthusiasm. “It’s been too long,”
“Solos!” Otis said with equal enthusiasm. “How are you holding up?”
“Ay ay, not good,” Hariig said and suddenly the fatigue started showing. “I am lost. No idea how to solve this,”
“Don’t worry my friend,” Bervan said and patted the Sullustan on the back. “We might have something,”
“You do?” Hariigs eyes grew wide and something seemed to spark within him. “Please, please, come up to my office and we will chat,”
“No,” Bervan said firmly and Hariig was taken aback, not sure what to say, but Bervan patted him reassuringly. “These halls cannot be trusted, lets go outside,” and with a firm grip around the confused Sullustans arm, he led him out the door.
“By the way,” Bervan said. “I haven’t introduced you to my fellow investigators: Inspector Nolvin and Padawan Paska Yabin,” both nodded in greeting and Paska flashed the famous Nautolan smile quickly.
“Charmed,” Hariig said rather meekly as he showed his identification to the guards outside. Bervan led them a little longer along the walkway until he was satisfied with the distance between them and the headquarters.
“Why are you doing this?” Hariig was clearly upset and the words fell over one another but Bervan heard what he said.
“Something is not right, old friend,” he said and gazed with a piercing stare at the Sullustan. “I have reason to believe that there are traitorous elements within the SBI and I don’t want this conversation to be overheard,”
“But you trust me?”
“We go back far, of course I trust you,” and Hariigs face split into a large grin. Now that he understood that he wasn’t accused of anything, his spirits lifted but at the same time he was intrigued.
“Go on,” he said eagerly. “Why do you believe this?”
“It’s a long story,” Bervan said and shook his head. “I hope you’ve got the patience,”
And with that Bervan started telling the Sullustan about their missions, the discovery in Breecko Harrs apartment and the revelations the Retak, the last surviving aide, had offered. More than once, Paska would fill in on the details and once or twice, Nolvin grunted a confirmation. All the while, Hariig had his eyes downcast in deep concentration.
“So,” he said when they had finally reached the end of their account. “You think that because there was no irregularity with security of the apartments that someone within the SBI might be involved?” everyone shook their heads.
“And these tapes. You have them with you?”
“Yes,” Bervan said. “I have them on me,”
“Good. I would like the listen to them,”
“That can be arranged,” Bervan said eagerly whilst looking over his shoulder. “But not here,” Nolvin and Paska started moving towards the speeder but Hariig stood rooted to the spot.
“There is one thing I do not understand,” he said and gazed over the city landscape. “You speak of investigations on Rodia, Eriadu, Corellia and Nar Shaddaa. What was that about?”
“What do you mean?” Paska asked slowly. “The SBI supplied us with that information. It was you that told us to go there,”
“No,”
“Solos, old friend,” Bervan said and grabbed the Sullustan. “What are you talking about?”
“I do not understand,” Hariig said sincerely. “You go to these places yet our intelligence hasn’t hinted at any activity in connection with the murders,”
“What?” Paska said, getting riled up. “It was you who supplied us with it. The Jedi Council acted on intelligence supplied by you,”
“No, that cannot be true,” Hariig said, trying to keep his voice steady. “We have no knowledge of sending the intelligence you’re speaking of to the Jedi Council. Nothing of what you’ve talked about has come up in discussions between the Director and the Executive Officers,”
“Then what have you been discussing?” Bervan asked.
“Our focus has been on Coruscant but even our intelligence on the developments here are at best patchy,”
“But we still received intelligence from the SBI suggesting that we’d take our investigations off-planet,” Paska said.
“Odd, since that has never been brought up in the meetings and the Jedi Council couldn’t have got it wrong, could they?”
“Those intelligence reports had to come from somewhere,” Bervan said darkly.
“But where?” Hariig said with a hint of desperation. “Intelligence reports cannot reach the Senate, Chancellor or Jedi Council without the approval of the Director…” Hariigs voice trailed off and he stared uncertainly at the headquarters looming over his shoulder in the background.
“What is it Solos? What is wrong?” Bervan said, noticing how uncomfortable the Sullustan looked.
“It cannot be,” Solos answered, staring at the building. “Or it can, but it cannot be true, no no,” he sat down on the cold pathway, holding his head in his hands.
“Solos, what is it?” Bervan pleaded and crouched opposite the distressed Sullustan. Solos looked up and his eyes were wide with despair.
“It is obvious now, it is so obvious yet it fooled us with its simplicity,” he hissed through gritted teeth as he shook Bervan.
“Solos, really! I don’t now what you are getting at,” Bervan said with a hint of frustration.
“It’s the Director,” Solos said with a hushed voice. “He’s been feeding you false intelligence,”
“How?” Paska asked.
“Like I said, intelligence cannot reach the Jedi Council without the approval of the Director of the SBI,”
“But that doesn’t stop him from making up intelligence and passing it on,” Solos nodded and Bervan punched the ground with his fist.
“Clever, really,” Solos chuckled grimly. “He made sure you were sent across the galaxy on these top secret missions which no one else knew of, diverting attention from here,”
“So that’s it?” Paska said, looking both worried and hopeful at the same time. “We know who’s behind it all now?”
“Enough to convince me,” Nolvin said and grabbed his blaster.
“No,” Bervan said and stood up. “It explains the how the SBI was “taken care of”, but as far as I know, Director Bleck isn’t leading the Republic which was the intention of the conspirators,”
“But something must’ve failed then,” Nolvin said gruffly. “The Republic is currently lead by the Vice Chair, Sio-something. He was always going to lead if something happened to the Chancellor,”
“No, that’s the problem; nothing did happen,” Bervan snapped and pointed at Nolvin. “You loveable Besalisk, you just offered the perfect solution!”
“What?”
“Solos, you’ve seen the crisis unfurl right?” Bervan asked, turning to the Sullustan and ignoring Nolvin.
“Too true I have! I’ve spent many hours in the conference room watching the developments,”
“Then answer me this,” Bervan said, barely containing his excitement. “How many remain of Chancellor Abundsens staff?”
“How many? One of course, Vice Chair, now Chancellor Siom,”
“Oh no,” Paska gasped, being the quickest to catch-on. “You don’t mean…?”
“I’m afraid so,” Bervan said. “The Republic seems to be rotten at the very core,”

And here it finally is: the climax! I can't describe the feeling of satisfaction I had when writing this. It's a large piece and I've done my best to tie up all strings! I hope you enjoy it!

Chapter 19
A Conspiracy Unravelled
Not much had been said since they had left the pathway outside the headquarters of the SBI and flown back to the Jedi Temple but the sight of the burning capital under them had given them a sense of urgency yet of hopelessness. The conspirators had already caused massive damages and loss of lives, what was to say that they could be stopped now or if stopped, it wasn’t too late?
Currently, the four investigators sat around one of the tables in a quiet corner of the Jedi Archives, the only place where they felt safe. Once again they were listening to the tapes.
“This is worrying,” Hariig said with a hushed voice as the tape clicked abruptly. “I don’t like the way they talk about taking out the SBI,”
“Your theory of the Directors role does explain it though, unfortunately,” Bervan said.
“Indeed,” Solos sighed. “We must move quickly to contain Director Bleck,”
“We have to be careful,” Bervan said. “His arrest could warn the other conspirators,”
“Which other ones?” Paska asked. “All of them are dead; Abit, Oed, Le’Vis and Yap,”
“Yes, I’ve just been informed about all of this and I still don’t understand,” Hariig said and leaned back into his seat. “Why would the co-conspirators be killed off?”
“It’s been hinted that at least one of them got cold feet, perhaps the rest of the followed suite,” Bervan said in low voice. “Perhaps they became a liability and had to be taken care of,” Hariig shifted in his seat and leaned closer towards the Jedi and the Inspector.
“Whilst we are on the topic, those four deaths have had us mystified. All four died in blasts, but not a sign of a bomb, missile, anything…”
“What do you know about flying detonators?” Paska asked. Hariig blinked with surprise as he was caught off-guard by the question.
“Flying detonators,” he stuttered. “Ah…um…”
“Did the Republic order a batch of these new weapons?” Paska asked.
“Shh!” Hariig hissed and looked over his shoulder. “Don’t speak loudly of it,”
“Why?”
Hariig leaned now over very closely and his voice was a barely audible hiss.
“Prototypes of those weapons were ordered by the Republic, but they never reached us,”
“Why?”
“The transport ship was boarded by pirates and the shipment stolen,”
“Who were the pirates?”
“Not important. The pirates’ ship was later found drifting in space, all hands lost as was the shipment,”
“Where did the shipment go to?”
“No idea, but within a short time, these blasts start appearing which have the same characteristics as those weapons,”
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“It was embarrassing, we’d lost a shipment of highly deadly prototype weapons. Only the Director and the Executive Officers knew what had happened. Not even Chancellor Abundsen was aware of it. We never expected them to turn up on Coruscant,”
“Could it be possible that the pirates weren’t pirates?”
“No, they were well known to us, however, as things are going now, I wouldn’t be surprised to find out if someone in the SBI had them paid off,”
“Where was the shipment lost?” Bervan asked.
“Chommell sector which is coincidentally the Chancellors home sector,”
“How much more dirt is there?” Nolvin exclaimed. “I’m starting to lose track of all the connections,”
“That is an interesting connection,” Paska said.
“Look,” Hariig said. “We’ve got evidence to arrest the Director but don’t go after Siom just because he is the Chancellor. We have no evidence except assumptions,” he leaned back, crossed his arms and looked disapprovingly at the Jedi.
“So you suggest we just move on Director Bleck?” Bervan asked and Hariig nodded.
“He’s the only one we have any evidence of committing any wrong-doing,”
“But it still doesn’t add up,” Paska said. “The evidence against Director Bleck suggests that he is clearing the way for someone else to reach power. He lets the SBI murder any witnesses, steals prototypes that are used to bomb places and send the Jedi on wild bantha hunts across the galaxy. And for what, to remain as Director?”
“It is true, the only one that has gained anything from this whole crisis is Vice Chair Siom,” Bervan said.
“No,” Hariig shook his head emphatically. “I will not hear another word of this. If we’re wrong, we will just further deepen this crisis,”
“And if we’re right?” Paska said with a wry smile.
“You stubborn Jedi, you have no idea how this works. We’re wasting time debating theories when we’ve got real evidence of a real threat that needs to be contained,” Hariig slammed his fists upon the table and several Jedi walking about the Archives looked down towards the corner where they were sitting. Nolvin, Paska and Bervan looked at each other before turning towards Hariig again.
“So, what do you suggest we’ll do?” Bervan asked.
“Firstly, we’ll take our evidence to the Jedi Council and then we make a joint move on Director Bleck,”
“No, that is out of the question,” Bervan moved his hand dismissively and Hariig looked at him in bewilderment.
“Then how do you suggest we move on?”
“We, us four, apprehend Director Bleck ourselves,” Bervan answered.
“That is crazy,” Hariig exclaimed, once again causing several heads to turn towards their corner. “It will never work!”
“It will take ages for the Jedi Council to decide on any action, even when presented with the evidence. We have no time for deliberation. We must act now,” Hariig looked at each and every one of them and had a troubled expression on his face. He licked his lips as he weighed his options.
“Lets do it your way then,” he finally said. “Perhaps a small group will stand a better chance of reaching him than a contingent of Jedi,”
“There you go,” Bervan gullet bounced up and down as he smiled his widest grin. “I suggest we move this instant,” all four stood up and made their way quickly out of the Archives.
“On towards history,” Paska smiled.
“Yep, that’s guaranteed,” Nolvin said. “No matter how this ends,” he added grimly.
As they left the Archives and crossed the Entrance Hall, they could see a gathering some way off. There was some tension in the air and as the four walked closer, they could hear several Jedi loudly debating something.
“What is going on?” Bervan asked as he pushed through the crowed and interrupted a heated exchange between a Nikto and a Cerean.
“Haven’t you heard?” the Cerean said, turning towards Bervan and ignoring the Nikto’s attempts to continue the exchange. “Chancellor Siom has just been granted emergency powers,”
“What?” Hariig exclaimed as he pushed his way next to Bervan. “An acting Chancellor can’t do that,”
“Is the Senate back in session? Has it been granted by the Senate?” Bervan asked hopefully. Since the Senate Plaza riot, where Master Lysvin had died and the Senate set alight, Chancellor Siom had suspended all sessions in the Senate, effectively shutting down the Republic.
“No,” the Cerean answered. “The Senate is still under lock. At this moment, the Republic is being led by a single man,” he said with a sombre tone. Without responding, Bervan broke free from the crowd and moved briskly towards the gates of the Jedi Temple.
“What are we doing now?” Paska asked, running up beside Bervan.
“We stick to the plan,” Bervan said, stopping abruptly and turning towards Solos Hariig. “Unless there has been a change of heart,” Hariig met the gaze of Bervan and held it.
“You still want to make a move on the Chancellor?” Hariig asked.
“Yes,”
“There is still not enough evidence,”
“However, recent developments aren’t encouraging,”
“True,” Hariig sighed and he took a look at Nolvin and Paska. “I still don’t want to arrest the Chancellor, but…”
“But?”
“Send the Inspector and the Padawan to keep a look on him. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the arrest of Director Bleck,”
“Wait a minute, you’re sending me to the Chancellors office?” Paska asked, his jaw slightly dropping.
“Only to observe,” Bervan said and Nolvin bristled with irritation. “Me and Solos are doing the hard part,”
“But I’ve been here from the start, now you’re just sidelining me?” Paska said, his voice filled with sadness and disappointment.
“Paska,” Bervan said and crouched next to the Nautolan. “You’ve done some great things which will be remembered for a long time in the Archives, but it is now at the end that we are at the most perilous state. The Director has to be apprehended and for that both Solos and me need to go because we’ve got the experience to handle whatever he might throw at us,” Bervan patted Paska reassuringly on the arm. “But I’m not sidelining you. You’ve got one more part to play and that is too keep an eye on the Chancellor. We still don’t know where he stands and the arrest may reveal his true intents. We need you there,”
Paska still looked down on the ground and said nothing. Bervan patted him on the arm once again and smiled tentatively. Paska looked up and the eyes of the two Jedi connected. In one there was a hopeful and reassuring plea, in the other there was an unmovable determination to do his duty.
“Sure, Master. I will go to the Chancellors office,”
“Excellent,” Bervan beamed and he stood up. “In the end, you are the true hero Paska and make no mistake about it!”
****
As the elevator rose up the many levels up to the Chancellors office, Paska stood in a contemplative mood. Beside him stood the burly Besalisk, breathing noisily through his nose and showing clear signs of nervousness. Paska felt a tingle of anticipation shoot up and down his spine but he wasn’t nervous. After all, it was Bervan and Hariig who had taken on the dangerous job. Paska was merely going to baby-sit a man that could turn out to be innocent whilst Bervan and Hariig got the guilty one and all the glory.
Paska straightened himself and shook his head, his dreads smacking themselves against the chest of Nolvin, who didn’t seem to notice anything. He shouldn’t be so bitter and selfish. He had a job to do and should stay focused at that. Paska suddenly felt mature and marvelled at the feeling. These last few weeks must have had a much deeper effect on him than he first though. He wasn’t unmovable. And then it hit him, this had gone on for some time. He had barely been able to rest at all since before their investigation on Rodia and must’ve been…No, Paska had lost track.
The sense of marvel he had just felt was now replaced with an overpowering feeling of weariness. Paska felt his whole body going limp but the thought of it being all over in a few hours spurred Paska to regain composure just in time as the elevator doors slid open and revealed the Chancellors office. A tall Human was standing waiting for them as the both stepped out. He was wearing a wide smile on his face but the sight of Paska and Nolvin, a very unusual couple, effectively wiped the smile off his face.
“Are you the delegation from the Jedi Council?” he asked, forgetting all courtesy.
“Yes we are,” Paska said, his face set straight. The message from the “Jedi Council” that Bervan had sent to the Chancellor had reached them. Paska relaxed a little. At least they didn’t need to fight their way in.
“Surely there must be…” the aide said, struggling to sound diplomatic enough and looking increasingly uncomfortable. “Really?” was all he got out in the end.
“What’s your problem?” Nolvin growled. “Not pretty enough for ya?”
“No, it’s just…” once again the aide couldn’t find the right words whilst Nolvin grew increasingly agitated.
“Do I have to remind you that there is a crisis going out there,” Nolvin said with suppressed anger. “We have no time for pretty, take what you get. The Council has sent us to talk with the Chancellor and that is what we intend to do,” and with that, Nolvin pushed his way past the aide and made his towards the Chancellors own office.
Paska sighed and looked at the aide, but the aide was stunned and seemed incapable of any action. Paska jogged up beside the Besalisk.
“Nice one,” he said under his breath.
“I’m actually considered very handsome by my species’ standards, so that kind of talk always gets me going,” Nolvin said.
They walked into the Chancellors office and Chancellor Siom looked up at them with a puzzled expression on his face.
“What is this?” Siom asked.
“It’s the delegation from the Jedi Council,” the aide said, coming up behind them, unwilling to lose face in front of his boss.
“Very well,” Siom said. “Come in, come in.”
Paska and Nolvin walked tentatively into the office and sat down slowly into the chairs opposite the Chancellor. Both of them cast a quick sideway glance at each other. It was time to do their job.
****
Otis Bervan was pushing the speeder to its limits as he made his way through the vast city landscape.
“So, we just go in and arrest the Director, right?” Bervan asked.
“Yes,” Solos answered. “As an Executive Officer, I have authority to arrest someone if I have evidence to back my accusation, which I’ve got,”
“Sounds good,” Bervan said as he pushed down the throttle again, forcing every scrap of power out of it.
“What if he’s got some kind of back-up?” Bervan asked.
“We’ve got a Jedi,” Solos smiled.
“You can be too trusty sometimes, Solos. You know that right?”
A landing platform extended out from the SBI skyscraper.
“Welcome, Executive Officer Hariig,” a pleasant female voice said as the speeder connected with the landing pad. They jumped out of the speeder and moved rapidly towards the elevators which were at the back of the hangar. The doors slid open as they got near and slid silently shut again as they stood inside the elevator.
“Directors office,” Hariig said loudly and flashed an identification card.
“Identity confirmed,” the same pleasant female voice said and the elevator jolted, starting its ascension up towards the Directors office. Both of them stood in silent contemplation as the floors whizzed past and it had only gone a few minutes before they reached the very top of the building and the pleasant female voice said “Directors office,”
“Here goes. Ready?” Bervan said under his breath as they stepped into the office.
“Just follow my lead,” Hariig whispered, checking his uniform as he walked up to Director Blecks secretary.
“Good day Officer Hariig. How may I…” she was cut-off in mid-sentence as Hariig flashed his badge before her eyes.
“What is this?” she asked.
“Get out of here whilst you still can,” Hariig said. The secretary sat rooted in her spot, stunned. “For your own good,” he added and gave her an intense look. She stood up quickly and moved rather clumsily to the door, only looking over her shoulder quickly before bolting down the corridor and out of sight.
They moved on stealthily towards the door leading to the Directors private office. Hariig showed his badge once again and the doors slid open.
“Ah, Silya,” a voice floated out from the office. “Good. I had some papers I wanted to pass onto you,” neither Hariig nor Bervan answered but glided silently into the room.
“Silya?” Director Bleck said with a hint of apprehension. He had his back turned towards to the door and he was studying a map of the Galactic City. “Silya?” he said forcefully and turned around, only to see Bervan and Hariig standing in the doorway.
“Oh, it’s you Hariig,” he said, trying to sound relieved but failing at that. “Why all the sneaking about?”
“Director Haddem Bleck,” Hariig said with a steady voice as he stepped closer towards the Director. “As an Executive Officer of the SBI, I hereby arrest you for high-treason against the Republic,”
“What?” the surprised Director explained. Bervan lit his lightsaber to emphasise Hariigs accusation. “This is madness,”
“Really?” Bervan said. “I call it fine detective work,”
“You are the traitorous ones in this room,” Bleck said, pointing his finger accusingly at them and standing his ground. Hariig held his blaster firmly aimed at Bleck as Bervan advanced on the Director and shoved him up against the wall.
“Well, if you’re so innocent, then I’m sure you’d respect the democratic principles of the Republic and agree to a trial,” he held his lightsaber at neck length of the Director. “Innocent before proven guilty right? We’ve got evidence, what have you got for your defence?”
“He’s got us,” a voice said from behind Hariig and Bervan.

“Why am I honoured with such a visit?” Chancellor Siom asked, settling down into his thrown-like chair after passing in front of the large panoramic window for a while. Paska took a deep breath and though back to what Bervan had told him before leaving him at the Chancellors officer.
“Tell him the truth,” Bervan said to a puzzled Paska. “Believe me, it makes sense. Just omit certain…facts…”
“Certain facts?” Paska had said.
“He doesn’t need to know that he’s under suspicion. Just be vague,”
“Vague?”
“Yes. Just say we have found evidence for an inside job and so on. It’s the truth, with a few omissions,” and now Paska sat opposite the Chancellor and it was time to tell him the revised truth.
“We are here on behalf of the Jedi Council,” Paska started slowly but was started to gain confidence as he went along. “We are here to inform you on recent breakthroughs concerning the investigation into who sparked this crisis,” instantly the Chancellors interest peaked, however, Paska saw his eyes flashed nervously.
“And why isn’t the Jedi Council here to inform me?”
“I’m just a mere Padawan and therefore of no importance to the current attempts to quench the unrest,” Paska said, using as many big words as he could.
“And your friend here?”
“Inspector Nolvin,” Nolvin rumbled. “I am a part of this investigation,”
“Indeed,” Siom said, holding a long sideway glance towards Nolvin before turning his attention to Paska.
“Go ahead then,” Siom said and leaned back into his chair.
“We have reasons to believe that the current crisis has been orchestrated from within the Republic,” all these big words! Paska felt snobby.
“What’s your evidence?” Siom asked, his eyes piercing Paska. Paska floundered.
“We cannot tell you at this time,” Nolvin answered, coming to Paskas rescue.
“Are you aware that you are speaking to the Chancellor of the Republic?” Siom said with a hint of irritation.
“Uh-hu,” Nolvin grunted before going on. “The reason why we’re unwilling to give you any information is because, since we fear rogue elements within the Republic power structure, there is a very real possibility that your office is wired,” Siom grunted something and leaned closer towards Nolvin and Paska.
“You would do well to drop me a hint, otherwise I see no point in this visit,” he said.
“Very well,” Nolvin said and stroked the whiskers under his nose. “Evidence suggests that the problem is in the Senate,”
“But the Senate is suspended. They are powerless,” Siom said, a hint of glee in his voice.
“True, but we should move fast to catch these rogue elements,”
“Very well,” Siom said. “Who is participating in this investigation?”
“Coruscant law enforcement, Jedi,” Paska said. “And the SBI,”
“Very well,” Siom said, seeming to relax a bit. “I have no reason to worry then,”
****
“Conurt, Bagai. It’s you,” Hariig said, turning around and facing the Duros and the Human who had suddenly materialised in the doorway behind him. “What are you doing here?”
“We met a very distressed secretary in the corridor who said something worrying was going on in the Directors office,” Bagai, the Human said.
“Don’t draw any conclusions Bagai, I can explain,” Hariig said and threw a quick glance at Bervan, who was still pushing the Director up against the wall with a lightsaber by his neck. Bervan backed down, but still held his lightsaber aimed at Bleck.
“Sorry, Hariig. I know enough to draw a conclusion,” Bagai and Conurt drew their blasters. “You’re under arrest for unlawful threats and conspiring against the SBI,”
“Have you lost your mind?!” Hariig shouted, distressed and confused.
“Don’t make this hard. Drop the blaster,” Bagai aimed his blaster at Bervan. “And you, drop the lightsaber,”
“Wait one minute here,” Bervan said, squeezing the hilt of his lightsaber and holding it steadily. “We can explain this,”
“Yes,” Hariig said, cutting in quickly. “We have evidence that this man, Director Bleck, fed the Jedi Council with false intelligence,”
“We know,” Bagai said.
“You…you what?!” Bervan exclaimed, his lightsaber quivering.
“Drop the lightsaber!”
“How can you know?”
“Solos, please. Drop the blaster!” something scrambled behind Solos and Bervan and Director Bleck emerged, holding two blasters.
“Listen to your fellow officers, Hariig,”
“You don’t know what kind of mistake you are doing,” Hariig said as he dropped his blaster. Bervan bent over and laid his lightsaber carefully on the floor.
“No, we are more than aware of what we are doing,”
“Officers Bagai and Conurt. Take these impostors somewhere and have them dealt with,”
“Dealt with?”
“Yes sir,”
“Back off!” Bervan shouted and Force pushed the two officers into the wall. He felt a strong arm wrap around his neck and the barrel of a blaster poking his back.
“Not very clever, fish-face,” Bleck hissed into Bervans ear.
“What are you going to do, execute us?” Hariig asked, as Conurt and Bagai came up from behind and grabbed him.
“You know too much,” Bleck said. “I cannot risk having you stand trial,”
“Are you hearing this?” Hariig asked his two fellow Officers who were holding him down but they didn’t react. Hariig turned back to Bleck.
“They’re in on it too, aren’t they?”
“Yes,” Bleck said. “And we would’ve left you alone, had you known where your place was,”
“My place is here, at the SBI serving the Republic,” Hariig said defiantly.
“Agreed,” the choked voice came from Bervan. “Minus the SBI part,”
“The Republic,” Bleck spat. “It is not what you think it is,”
“Not at this moment, no” Bervan said. “But I know where to put the blame,”
“The Republic is not what it once was. It is weak,” Bleck hissed. “It had a weak leader and was slowly crumbling to corruption. Something had to be done,”
“By crumbling it further?!” Hariig exclaimed, trying to tug away from Bagai and Conurt.
“No one blames a builder who tears down a ruin and builds a better house on the same foundation,” Bleck said.
“That’s because the builder didn’t blow up the whole neighbourhood and had his friends assassinated,” Bervan said, before Bleck squeezed his arms harder around the Mon Calamari’s neck.
“Enough of this,” Bleck said through gritted teeth. “You’ve reached the end,”
“Any last words?” Conurt chuckled, waving the barrel of his blaster around the temple of the Sullustan.
“I…I have,” Bervan wheezed. “Solos? Solos?”
“Yes?”
“Did you get all that?”
“It’s transmitting as we speak,”
“Transmitting? Search him!” Bleck bellowed. His grasp around Bervans neck loosened and in an instant, confusion erupted. Bervan only needed a split second to land his elbow into Blecks chest, forcing the sturdy Director to his knees, and get his lightsaber in his hands, blazing. Conurt had Hariig pushed up against the wall and was searching eagerly for the small listening device hidden somewhere on the Sullustan.
Bagai was holding Hariig down but turned around as he heard the Director slump to the floor and suddenly he was lifted off his feet and slammed against the floor. Before passing into unconsciousness, he heard the hum of the lightsaber and a shout of surprise by Conurt who slumped next to Bagai. As the office went black, Bagai heard two sets of feet moving rapidly towards the exit.
“What do we do now?” Bervan said as Hariig punched in the code to lock the door. “They’re not going to be out of it for long,”
“No,” Hariig said and started walking down the corridor. “That’s why I’m glad that Bleck had no time to officially demote me. I can still get my orders through,” and with that, he picked up his com.
“SBI Security, this is Executive Officer Solos Hariig. I want to request a complete lockdown of the top three floors and of all elevators,”
“Why?” a confused security officer on the other side asked.
“We have a situation with potential terrorists up here. I need the entrance hall cleared for SBI agents, the Judicial Forces and the Jedi Council. How are the outgoing channels to the Jedi Temple?”
“Clear sir. Up and running,” the answer came.
“Good. I’m on my way down. Stand-by for more orders,”
“Does this mean the recording went through to the Jedi Temple,” Bervan asked hopefully.
“Yes it did,” and a smile appeared on the Sullustans sweaty face. Bervan laughed a large, hearty laugh as the elevator doors slid open and sped its way down to the entrance hall. “Thank the Force for SBI-standard listening devices!”
****
“Would that be all then?” Chancellor Siom asked.
“For the moment at least,” Paska said. Not knowing what was courteous, he extended a hand towards the Chancellor, but he did not grab it.
“Do keep me informed,” a small smile made its way onto the Chancellors face.
“Of course we will,” Paska said and gave a small bow instead. Nolvin stood stiffly behind him and shot him a worried look. Paska knew exactly what it meant. The meeting had gone faster than expected and no news, good or bad, had come from the SBI headquarters. Paska needed to think fast.
“Look at that view!” he exclaimed as he looked towards the panorama window.
“Yes, it is quite beautiful,” the Chancellor said, but this time the smile was forced.
“Yes, it is beautiful,” Nolvin said with an over the top awed voice. He lumbered over to the window and pressed himself against it, looking out on the city landscape. Paska followed suite.
“Really,” the Chancellor sighed.
“Sorry sir,” Paska said apologetically. “It’s just, as a Padawan, I rarely get to leave the Temple and it’s not often I get to see this kind of view,”
“And with me,” Nolvin said, hesitating as he tried to make up an excuse. “I’m a law enforcement officer, so I work in the dirty underworld and rarely get to see the shiny…tops of Coruscant,” he turned back to the window quickly.
“I must insist…”
“Look, over there’s the Temple!”
“I know this is special, but…”
“I think that’s where I live. No wait, it’s over there. No, maybe it’s over there. Or…” slowly but surely, the Chancellors face was turning red. He was about to give the two one last warning when the aide appeared in the doorway.
“What is it?” the Chancellor said with irritation. Paska and Nolvin were still faking awe by the window whilst eavesdropping on the conversation.
“Word’s just reached us that there’s been a raid at the headquarters of the SBI,” the aide said tentatively. Paska and Nolvin stopped faking awe and turned around and faced the aide.
“A raid? What do you mean?” the Chancellor asked, growing uneasy.
“It was joint raid by the SBI, Judicial Forces and the Jedi. Director Bleck and some of the Executive Officers have been arrested, apparently for…” the aide hesitated.
“For what?” the Chancellor demanded impatiently.
“For high-treason,”
“Impossible!” the Chancellor said, tempers flaring. “The only ones guilty of high-treason are those behind that raid. Who are they? Give me names!”
“But sir, lots of beings were involved. Even the Jedi Council was present at the raid,”
“The Council?” Chancellor Sioms voice turned to a venomous hiss as he turned towards Paska and Nolvin. “So, it is finally clear to me now. You’ve been sent here to keep a check on me whilst the Jedi Council tries to bring down the very Republic!”
“What!?” Paska exclaimed and it became clear that the good intentions of Bervan had gone disastrously wrong and that Chancellor Siom was twisting it to his own advantage.
“It all makes sense, it explains the weak efforts of the Jedi to quell the unrest,” alongside the Chancellor, the aide stood nodding his head vigorously in apparent awe of the Chancellors quick deductions. “Send out the word to all the parts of the Judicial Forces still loyal to the Republic: Every Jedi is an enemy of the Republic. Apprehend any instantly. And do call security to take care of these traitors,” the aide made a final nod and dashed out of the office, all the while Chancellor Siom was grinning at Paska and Nolvin.
Unwittingly, they had served him the perfect opportunity to seize complete power.

“Any word yet from the Chancellors office?” Bervan said impatiently, standing by the reception. Hariig stood next to him, obviously pleased with how things had turned out. Some way off in the entrance hall, the Jedi Council were holding a makeshift meeting, discussing the recent developments. Bervan had given them a quick testimony and whilst his spirits were high from successfully pulling everything off, he still was afraid that the Jedi Council would penalise him in some way.
“No,” the receptionist grunted, standing bent over the transmitter. “Wait, yes. Here’s something,” somehow, everyone in the hall heard those words and there was an instant crush towards the reception. The receptionist stood up on the desk and held the small data-pad across which the message from the Chancellor office flashed across.
“It says,” he read out loud and there was a hush among the crowd. “It says that all in the Judicial Forces who are still loyal to the Republic have a duty to apprehend the SBI and Jedi traitors. All Jedi, including the Jedi Council are now enemies of the Republic,” an instant uproar arose within the great hall.
“This is an outrage!” Master Holavert Biist bellowed, clearly shaken by the Chancellors decree. Within a split second, Bervans spirits had gone from soaring to down to the pit of his stomach. He was turning into a paler shade of blue and he turned to Solos.
“Paska and Nolvin are over there. What do you think has happened to them?” but before Solos could answer, a female Jedi pushed her way determinedly up to Bervan.
“Did I hear you mention my Padawan?” Ferly Rhenon asked pointedly, giving Bervan a cold hard stare.
“Rhenon, I…” but Bervan was lost for words.
“Tell me now, Bervan,”
“He’s at the Chancellors office,” Ferly threw up her arms in frustration.
“Typical, I leave him alone once and who does he team up with? Daredevil Bervan, that’s who,”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t expect it to turn out this way,”
“That’s not helping much right now,”
Bervan was going to object, but somehow, Master Yoda had managed to climb up onto the desk and had now the crowds attention directed at him.
“Worrying developments these are. Why Chancellor Siom has acted like this I do no know, but no better time to visit him now I think there is not,” the crowd mumbled in agreement.
“Take the Jedi Council I will, but support from the Judicial Forces and the SBI greatly appreciated is,” several from the SBI and Judicial Forces stepped forward and offered their support to Yoda. Among them were Solos Hariig and Commander Narva.
“I’m coming too,” Ferly’s voice raised itself over the din of voices and Bervan nodded his head emphatically, also willing to join.
“Then so it is,” Yoda said and leaned on his cane. “To the Chancellors office at once, we must go,”
****
“Prepare my ship, it is no longer safe for me here,” Chancellor Siom said as he left the office.
“No! Stop! Paska shouted and rushed out of the office with Nolvin following behind him. They turned around the corner and saw the Chancellor standing by the elevators and already several armed guards were issuing out from it.
“Finish it,” Siom hissed and stepped into the elevator as the armed guards took aim
“No!” Paska shouted, but the guards did not take heed and opened fire. Nolvin was, surprisingly enough, quick to react and threw his whole weight onto Paska and forcing him down to the ground and behind some cover.
“You might be Jedi, but you’re not blaster-proof,” Nolvin wheezed as the blaster shots bounced over their heads. “What should we do about this?”
“We must stop the Chancellor,” Paska said determinedly.
“True, just happens to be a wall of armed meatbags between us and the Chancellor,”
“We must distract them,”
“That will take enough time as it is,” Nolvin grabbed his blaster and fired a few shots without looking. Someone shouted in pain.
“You must distract them,” Paska said. “I will go alone,”
“What?!”
“It’s our only chance. I’m nimble, fast and I’ve got the Force. You…” Paska failed to find the right words.
“Yeah yeah, I’m just an annoyed Besalisk with a gun,” he sighed. “You’re right, it’s the only way. I’ll distract them and you reach the Chancellor, someway,”
“Good,” Paska seemed to wind himself up, for a last sprint. “May the Force be with you, Nolvin,”
“Thanks. And don’t worry, I know it is with you,” Nolvin gave Paska a heavy slap on the back and raised himself from behind their cover and unleashed a volley against the guards. At the same time, Paska jumped from behind the cover and brandished his flaming saber. The guards fell back, pushed aside by the relentless attack. Paska had a clear path to the elevators and he moved swiftly.
He turned around to cast a last glance at Nolvin and saw the Besalisk fighting it out with some of the braver guards. To his shock, Paska saw Nolvin take two shots to the chest and stomach. Their eyes met.
“Go! Go!” Nolvin bellowed as he slumped behind some cover. Without hesitating, Paska sliced open the elevator door and jumped down the shaft. Within an instant, the noise and smells of the gunfight disappeared and Paska was falling through the cool air with nothing but the noise of the wind in his ears.
Far below him, he could see the Chancellors elevator moving. Paska kept his eyes fixed firmly on the elevator but managed at the same time to dodge other elevators and the various wires that crisscrossed the shaft. He moved close to the wall and stuck his saber into it, managing to regulate the speed by which he fell and thus could land safely and unhurt on top of the Chancellors elevator with a barely audible thud.
He crouched down and held his saber close to himself. As the elevator grinded to the halt and Paska heard the hiss of the doors open, he stuck his saber through the roof and quickly carved a hole which he dropped through.
“It ends here, Chancellor,” Paska said. “You have a lot to answer for,”
“You,” the Chancellor spun around. “You just don’t give up do you? Seize him!”
The Chancellors guard advanced on Paska and unsheathed their cortosis vibroblades. The blades glittered in the setting sun as the three guards raised them and bore them down on Paska. Paska managed to dodge one and met the other two with his saber. From his right, the guard made a lunge and Paska managed to dodge it just in time. The two other guards fell back as they avoided their fellow guard and as Paska kicked the lunging guard in the back, he could advance on the two others. Sabers and vibroblades whirled as they clashed.
The guards were very well-trained and even though Paska had aid from the Force, he still only had a marginal advantage over them. Occassionally, he would cast a glance at the Chancellor and see him standing someway off, near his ship. Chancellor Siom wanted to see how this ended. Paska kept on dodging the blows coming from the guards and dived to avoid the third guard coming up from behind. Paska was growing tired and had less and less control over where his saber landed. The guards did not seem fatigued at all, even though they were carrying the heavy ceremonial suits of the Senate guards. Saber and vibroblade clashed again and by drawing up massive amounts of strength, he called upon the Force and pushed the opposing guard into the wall. A guard came running from the side and jumped in the air, ready to impale Paska onto his vibroblade, but Paska twirled around and avoided the attack. He quickly let his saber fall to meet the vibroblade but they did not meet.
Instead, Paska heard a quick hiss as his saber cut through something soft. The guard landed face first on the floor and the vibroblade with his sliced hand still holding it. The guard was rolling around in pain and holding the stump which had been his arm. Paska was paralysed. Not only was this his first duel, alone, but this was also the first time he caused a living being serious bodily harm. Paska stood looking upon the guard, who maybe had a family or who needed that arm, writhing on the floor and felt sick to the very core.
However, his train of thought was interrupted as he felt a sharp pain in his arm. A guard had sneaked up on him and drove his vibroblade into Paskas arm, cutting a deep gash. Paska screamed in pain and dropped his lightsaber. Instantly, the other guard came up and stabbed Paska in the side of his stomach. Paska collapsed from the pain but was picked up again by the guards and brought before the Chancellor who was applauding his men. They crossed their blades in front of Paskas neck. One move and it was all over.
“An impressive display, for such a young Jedi,” he said. “But in the end, futile. You will now go the same way as the Republic. It is a shame that you will miss the breaking of a new dawn,”
“Why?” Paska wheezed.
“Over the years, the Republic has grown weaker and weaker. I’ve seen how our armies have been downsized and crime rising. There have even been attempts by various systems to leave it,” Siom said, his speech getting more and more heated. “The galaxy was nothing until the rise of the Republic and will revert to being nothing if the Republic fails. The galaxy needs a strong Republic with a strong military and the power to influence all living beings. We are the light and we should spread it,” he looked down onto Paska with obvious contempt.
“The old and the weak must be washed away. The actions of the Jedi Council prove that it is not willing to participate in this new Republic and therefore, has forfeited its right for existence,” he nodded towards the guard. “Goodbye, Padawan. Your brave yet foolish last stand will unfortunately go unheard of,” the guards pulled back their vibroblades and Paska closed his eyes.
This was it.
But the tension was broken by the arrival of another elevator. The guards stopped, vibroblades raised in midair and looked at the elevator door. So did the Chancellor. Paska turned around as good as he could and looked at the elevator through watery eyes. The doors hissed open and out stepped Nolvin.
“Not so fast,” he said and coughed violently. “You’re under arrest,” Chancellor Siom said nothing, instead he smiled. The guards let go of Paska and advanced on Nolvin.
“Your stubbornness is admirable,” Siom said as Nolvin stood rooted to the spot as the guards neared him. “Qualities which would be useful in my new Republic,”
Suddenly, an explosion rocketed the hangar and everyone was thrown to their feet. Large chunks on the wall fell and although weary and having lost lots of blood, Paska managed to dodge the falling blocks. Siom found his legs trapped under a large block and through the dust, several figures emerged, bathing the hangar in blue and green.
“Your new Republic?” a voice said through the dust. “Un-democratic, it is,” out from the dust emerged Yoda together with the Jedi Council with Bervan and Ferly.
“It’s all a misunderstanding,” Siom said, trying to free his leg. “Surely, if you look at the evidence again…”
“Silence,” Master Rakash hissed. “Save that for later,”
“Paska!” Ferly shouted when seeing the young Nautolan crawling out of the rubble. She ran over and hoisted him up. “By the Force, you’re a mess,”
“I’m sorry Master,” he smiled feebly. “I’ll be more careful next time,”
“Am I glad to see you in one piece. Well, mostly…” Bervan said coming up alongside Paska. “Where’s Nolvin?”
“Oh no,” Paska said and turned around, surveying the rubble. The wide form of Nolvin could be seen approaching them.
“Nolvin!” Paska shouted with delight. “I thought you’d died, again,”
“It takes more than stones and blasters to kill a Besalisk. Due to all the blubber,” he wheezed and patted his stomach. “Now, if you excuse me,” he made his way past Paska and moved towards the Jedi Council.
“No disrespect,” Nolvin said as he reached them. “But if I remember rightly, you have no authorisation to arrest anyone without Senate approval and since the Senate has been shut the past weeks, I think I’ll take it from here,” the Council was taken by surprise of the straightforward talk of the Besalisk. Without waiting for a response, Nolvin kneeled down next to the face of Chancellor Siom.
“Mardan Siom. You’re under arrest for high-treason, four counts of murder, supplying government agencies with false information, conspiring to kill, terrorism, inciting riots, theft, resisting arrest and assaulting an officer of the law. Let the record show that you were arrested on,” Nolvin stopped as he dugout his data-pad to check the date of the arrest.
“Well, what a coincidence,” he smiled as he saw the date on the screen. “Happy Republic Day, Chancellor,”

A very satisfying conclusion. I especially enjoyed:
Let the record show that you were arrested on,” Nolvin stopped as he dugout his data-pad to check the date of the arrest.
“Well, what a coincidence,” he smiled as he saw the date on the screen. “Happy Republic Day, Chancellor,”

RE: Interrupted Celebration (OC's, 500 BBY, Thriller) Updated 22nd of May. CLIMAX!
And here it finally is, the last chapter. This is the completion of my first fan fiction and it is with mixed emotions. It feels good to finally see it through, but this story and its characters have been with my since mid-November and I will miss writing this story. It has shared it's ups and downs, from the brutal realisation of how it is to be a newbie writer to discovering the joys of writing for oneself.
I want to thank of those that have read this story and commented, all three of you
And thanks to any lurkers who have at least given this story a little try.
Special thanks to BigE, my one faithful reader who pulled me through when it was chugging at its slowest and when I was ready to give up because no one seemed to read this story. I owe you one!
Without further ado, here's the last chapter and everyone gets to kick back and celebrate, finally! Enjoy!

Chapter 20
Celebration
In a darkened room deep within the confines of the Jedi Temple sat several individuals and discussed the recent events.
“We owe a lot to Master Bervan and Padawan Yabin for resolving this crisis,” Master Gerlander said, breaking the contemplative silence.
“Indeed, but should we condone their actions?” Master Biist countered.
“How do you mean?”
“Ignoring the results, they did go after the Chancellor on some flimsy evidence. Had they been wrong, it would’ve started a crisis unheard of within the Order,”
“Agreed, but achieve nothing by being careful we did,” Master Yoda said.
“Yes,” Master Rakash said. “The fact that we blew off all investigations meant that we played right into the hands of the conspirators,”
“Still, I believe,” the croaked voice of Master Perriondi came from the back. “That the full extent of this conspiracy and actions of the Order shall not be disclosed,”
“Omit certain details, hmm?” Master Yoda said and his eyes sparkled in the dark. Perriondi almost felt like they were piercing him.
“Yes,” he kept his voice as steady as he could. “The investigations on Eriadu, Nar Shaddaa and Corellia need not to be disclosed,”
“Impossible,” Master Pa protested. “That means that much of Padawan Yabins and Master Bervans deductions will go unexplained.
“Perhaps we would do good in downplaying the roles of Yabin and Bervan and instead emphasising the role of Inspector Nolvin and Executive Officer Hariig and the investigation here on Coruscant,”
“Falsifying history?” Master Jibeth almost stood up in outrage. “We pride ourselves on the Archives being totally historically accurate,”
“My friends,” Perriondi said soothingly. “You must understand where this leaves us. Not only was the Jedi Council upstaged by a rouge Knight but also by a Padawan, our failed investigations have had repercussions. It is clear to me that we failed in our role as protectors of the Republic but if the citizens of the Republic ever find out the full extent of our failure…”
“What repercussions do you speak of?” Master Pa asked.
“We’ve seen an increase in Separatist activities on Corellia and the IRC is on the edge of bankruptcy after rumours surfaced of its apparent involvement in the crisis. The Exchange has seized more control of Nar Shaddaa. The Chancellors office and the SBI face serious reorganisation to once again regain the trust of the citizens. The only positive that has come out of all this is the collapse of Chazzak Industries, meaning that the jungles of Rodia and its inhabitants are safe for the moment. Speaking of Rodia, the Republic is facing a large lawsuit from the family of Fasin Vido, an SBI operative on Rodia, for the murder of him and the SBI is being investigated for the disappearance of the Rodian interior minister and his deputy,” Perriondi took a deep breath and grew quiet.
“I refuse to hide important facts of this crisis,” Jibeth said.
“Then why did you agree to this meeting, which is off the record?” Perriondi countered. Jibeth hesitated, but said nothing. He crossed his arms and would say nothing more for the entire meeting.
“Sad it is, when hide from our people we must,” Master Yoda said.
“True, but Master Perriondi brings up a good point,” Master Gerlander said. “The last thing we need is a Senatorial investigation into our actions. We’re are barely pulling through thanks to Master Bervans and Padawan Yabins involvement,”
“Is that what the Council recommends?” Master Pa asked. “That certain details should be omitted for the good of the Order?” there was a murmur of agreement among the Council members.
“Recommend I would to keep one copy with all the details,” Master Yoda said.
“For future generations perhaps,” Master Perriondi said. “I agree to that, on the terms that only Council members will have access,” there was a vote and Perriondi’s suggestion won.
“Onto the next burning question,” Master Gerlander said. “The missing Jedi,”
“How many have disappeared since the crisis?” Master Biist asked.
“15 Jedi, among them the promising Tarell Chkto,” Master Gerlander answered and turned to Master Perriondi. “Did something happen on Nar Shaddaa?”
“No,” Perriondi said, retreating further into the darkness. “Nothing that comes to my mind,”
“Anyway,” Gerlander went on, apparently not convinced by Perriondis answer. “Chkto has been identified as a ringleader among these Jedi that have left the Order. The question is, should we bring them back in?”
“Of course,” Master Biist said.
“No,” Yoda answered. “Left for a reason, they have. Time to think they need. Find themselves they must. Intervene we will not. Come back of their own free will they should,” there was a murmur of agreement and thus they decided not to pursue the lost Jedi.
“And what of the ongoing trial?” Master Pa asked. “I’ve been busy with search missions that have not been updated,”
“All have pleaded guilty. Siom, Bleck and several within the SBI are most likely going to be sentenced for high-treason,” Gerlander answered.
“And are we any clearer on what has transpired lately?” Pa asked.
“Slightly,” Master Rakash answered. “Apparently, Vice Chair Siom had tricked the Senators into supporting a bid for the leadership by promising support to the issues they championed or at least to Oed and Yap, absolve them from any guilt in the IRC-funds scandal. But the Senators got cold feet after Senator Abit had confronted Vice Chair Siom about the murder of one of his aides, the spy that had eavesdropped on one of their meeting, and left the conspiracy. That’s when Director Bleck arranged the theft of the secret weapons which were used in the assassinations of the Senators and later supplied the Jedi Council with false intelligence to cover their trail. With us busy elsewhere in the galaxy, the conspirators proceeded with their plans of destruction and destabilisation, which would result in them grabbing power,”
“But in the end they were caught,” Pa smiled. “The Republic still stands. I guess with the failure of this attempt, no one will try to overthrow the Republic from within,”
“Not with the Jedi guarding it,” Biist said with pride.
“Hopefully, learnt our lesson we have,” Master Yoda said.

“The Republic has prevailed!” the voice of the announcer rose over the large crowd, probably into the tens of millions, who had gathered to celebrate the belated 500th anniversary of the Ruusan Reformation. A mighty roar rose from the crowd in response. Millions of fireworks were simultaneously fired up and illuminated the dark Coruscanti night sky. Had anyone in the crowd paid attention, they would’ve noticed that the fireworks illuminated the remains of many skyscrapers and revealed that the smoke still lay heavy over the capital.
There was still fighting going on in the lower levels, but all concerns had been put aside for this morale-boosting celebration. Tons of golden confetti danced across the large parade ground in the cool night breeze and at once, a mighty blast came from thousands of horns as a victory tune especially composed for the occasion started to play. High above, on a large platform, stood Paska and looked on in awe at the spectacle unfolding before his very eyes and he was at the centre of it.
“This is amazing,” he turned towards Ferly. “There’s so much relief in the air,”
“You feel it too?” she asked and smiled.
“I can’t believe we’re here,” he said. “Rodia and everything else…it seems so distant,”
“I know,” she said and came up behind him. “It feels like this ordeal never happened,”
“Oh, I can assure you that it still feels very real to me,” Paska said and flinched as he touched the wound on his side. The arm where he had received a deep gash was also heavily bandaged. Ferly couldn’t help but laugh.
“You’ve matured Paska. You’re ready to mantle the burden of a Jedi,” Paska didn’t say anything, instead he just smiled and looked out towards the crowd again.
“Incredible, eh?” Nolvin said, coming up beside Paska. All those that had been instrumental in uncovering the conspiracy were on the platform and were scheduled to receive the highest rewards for their bravery. Whilst regarding the Besalisk, Paska noticed a tear in the corner of his eyes.
“The emotions getting to you?” Paska asked with a smile. Had it been anyone else, Nolvin would’ve scoffed at him and said nothing, but they were friends in the deepest sense. Allies in arms. Besides, Nolvin had taken a shine to the young Nautolan.
“Sometimes,” he sniffed. “Sometimes, I think this planet is worst cesspool in the whole wide galaxy. Rife with everything that destroys decent beings. But now, looking at this, I must admit that I love this place. I love the people,” he said and smiled at Paska.
“I know,” Paska said. “Saving something you dislike makes you really appreciate it,” Nolvin patted him heavily on the back twice and moved back. Paska turned around to face the rest of the crowd on the platform. He could see the Jedi Order standing uncomfortably in the middle, very aware that the adulations of the crowd were not for them. He could see Otis Bervan with nothing but a wide smile on his face and even his reclusive Padawan Dai had a smile on her face, though not as wide. Solos Hariig, the acting Director of the SBI, was the only one managing to hold some composure but even he could not disguise the glee in his eyes.
Paska looked once again out over the crowd and thought that he’d never seen the planet so unified as now. Beings from different systems and different cultures were dancing with each other, weeping with each other, laughing with each other and sharing with each other. During a few hours of one night, all enmities had been forgotten and everyone celebrate what they had in common, the love for democracy. Paska felt it was a special night and the night were the true ideals of the Republic shone through. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever see such a night again, but that night proved to him that the Republic had never been stronger. The conspirators had had it wrong all along.
“And now,” the voice of the announcer rolled out over the crowd and he came bouncing up into sight on the platform. “Give a warm welcome to the true heroes of the Republic…” the rest of was drowned in the noise of the crowd giving its warm welcome. Paska laughed, a long hearty laugh and it lasted all the way up to the podium where he would receive a reward for his courage.
“A true hero of the Republic?” he thought and eyed his medal with satisfaction whilst waving to the gigantic crowd below. “I can live with that,”

Well, a hearty
for your completed fic!
The celebration was fantastic, but I must say I did enjoy the Jedi Council secret meeting.
“Is that what the Council recommends?” Master Pa asked. “That certain details should be omitted for the good of the Order?” there was a murmur of agreement among the Council members.
Oh, well - I shouldn't be suprised that even the Jedi Council would resort to such tactics.

Aha! That's it. Hold it right there.
Pronoun trouble.
It's not "he doesn't have to shoot YOU now," it's "he doens't have to shoot ME now."

Once again, thank you. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
In fact, an extra thank you to whoever nominated me for "Best New Author" in the Before the Saga category. It took me completely by surprise and the fact that at least one person here thinks I am one of the best new authors of 2006/2007 is really heartwarming and has made working on this fic extra worthwile! Thank you!
