Title: Just a Little Snow
Author: Nienna Narmolanya
Genre: A little drama in the beginning, but pure humor after that. Or perhaps pure silliness?
Characters: Obi-Wan, Bant, Garen, Reeft, with a short appearance by Qui-Gon at the end.
Timeframe: JA
Disclaimer: Obi-Wan belongs to Mr. Lucas. His friends belong to Ms. Watson. I own nothing. *sniff*
Summary: A little fun in the snow turns into more than accident-prone Obi-Wan bargained for. Written for the Qui/Obi Winter Challenge.
Notes: This is un-betaed, so please forgive any typos. I know they're in there somewhere...

The weather outside was frightful. Chilled rain had fallen on Coruscant the whole night before, the droplets freezing the moment they splattered against something solid. Elevated walkways, rooftops, speeders left parked outside – the rain had coated everything with a thick sheet of ice. Then, some time near dawn, it began to snow.

Obi-Wan lay on the grass in the Room of a Thousand Fountains, soaking up the warmth of the soil beneath his back as he watched huge fluffy flakes fall upon the circular skylight in the center of the ceiling. Soon, the rapidly thickening layer of snow would block out all external light.

In all of his thirteen years, Obi-Wan had seen only a handful of winter storms like this on Coruscant. The closely monitored weather systems of the Galactic capital rarely unleashed anything more severe than an annoying drizzle. This storm was for the record holos. Obi-Wan was sure that the city outside was mostly, if not completely, shut down. Only someone with a death wish would take their speeder up into the gale force winds aloft.

As if to punctuate his thought, a sudden gust of wind sent the snow on the skylight swirling in every direction, and Obi-Wan shivered. It certainly looked cold out there.

“May I join you?”

Startled from his thoughts, Obi-Wan blinked and tilted his head back to find the large silver eyes of his best friend Bant gazing down at him. “Sure,” he replied, patting a nearby patch of grass. Moving his gaze back to the skylight, he heard Bant’s quiet “Umph” as she plopped down on her back beside him.

“It looks so cold,” she said after a while, unknowingly echoing Obi-Wan’s earlier thought. “I certainly wouldn’t want to be out in weather like this. We Mon Calamari prefer it much warmer.”

Obi-Wan smiled in spite of himself, the memory of the first time he met Bant floating to the forefront of his mind. He had been on his way out of the Crèche for a quick breakfast in the dining hall with his other clanmates when a door he’d just passed opened suddenly. Jumping back in surprise, he looked on as a little amphibian humanoid, pink skin slick with water droplets, stepped out into the hallway, followed a second later by a blast of oppressively hot, humid air. At the time, he had no idea what to make of her.

“Bant, remember the first time you took all of us inside your room? Me and Garen and Reeft…”

His voice trailed off, a sudden twinge of sadness wiping the smile from his face.

“Obi-Wan?”

He opened his eyes, not having realized he closed them, to find the Mon Calamari girl leaning over him, the wrinkles on her forehead made more pronounced by a deep frown.

“Are you all right?”

Nodding his head, Obi-Wan sat up slowly and released the unexpected emotion into the Force. Fingering a blade of grass, he sighed. “I guess I’ve been feeling kind of down lately and I think it’s because I don’t get to see you or Garen or Reeft very much anymore.”

Bant laid a hand on his arm, her silver eyes shining softly as she gazed up into the subdued light from the viewport above. “Being a padawan is a lot of work. Master Jinn always has you busy with something it seems, and I know it’s the same with Garen and Reeft and their masters too. I guess it’s only normal that you don’t get to spend as much time with everyone.” Lowering her eyes, she met his gaze. “But you can still be friends, you know.”

Giving Bant a half smile, Obi-Wan breathed deeply and settled back into the ticklish blades of grass. He figured he shouldn’t feel surprise at how quickly Bant discerned the root of his depression, but he couldn’t help it. Despite her young age, she had a way of seeing what troubled him long before he knew himself.

She’s right, he thought. We’re still friends, the same as we always were. Nothing can change that, not even growing up.

Feeling somewhat better, at least for the moment, Obi-Wan propped himself up on his elbow and was about to thank his friend for the advice when an excited shout from behind drowned him out.

“Obi-Wan! Bant! What are you two banthas heads doing up here?”

Swiveling around, Obi-Wan caught sight of his friend Garen Muln dodging between the garden’s ancient trees as he ran toward them as if on cue, followed closely by Reeft.

Coming to a halt in front of them, Garen pointed toward the white-covered skylight, his face glowing with eagerness. “Come on, guys! Let’s go play in the snow!”

Even as Obi-Wan returned Garen’s grin, Bant sat up and laid her hands on her hips. “You have to be kidding. It’s ten below zero out there, not to mention extremely slippery. If you don’t freeze to death, you’ll probably fall and break your neck. I wouldn’t want to be around when your master found you.”

“Oh, Bant,” Garen sighed, rolling his eyes melodramatically, “you’re such a spoil-sport.” Turning his back on her, he fixed his gaze on Obi-Wan. “What do you say? Surely you’re not scared?”

Ignoring Bant’s disproving frown, Obi-Wan found his footing and drew himself up to his full height – still not quite as tall as Garen – and replied, “Of course I’m not scared. It’s only a little bit of snow.”

Garen shot Bant a triumphant smirk, then grinned as the girl crossed her arms with a soft “humph,” though a hint of restrained mirth flickered in her eyes. A shy, reserved person by nature, Bant was the polar opposite of Garen Muln who impulsively rushed after every new adventure, usually only to end up in the Healer’s Ward. But they somehow got along, even if only by teasing each other mercilessly.

Glancing back over his shoulder, Garen gestured to the last member of their group, the orange-skinned boy standing behind him, who was staring up at the skylight. “Reeft? Are you in?”

Pulling his eyes from the skylight, Reeft bobbed his elongated head. “You know I am…as long as we don’t miss the midday meal,” he added with a grin that only served to deepen the wrinkles that lined his cheeks.

A smile tugged at Obi-Wan’s lips. Sometimes it seemed like the Dressellian’s entire world revolved around food.

His grin quickly disappeared however when Bant shot him a pointed look. “I don’t want to be around when your master finds out,” she said in a matter-of-fact tone. “You were just saying yesterday how strict he can be.”

Obi-Wan froze as Bant’s words sunk in. Nothing would disappoint Qui-Gon more than to find out his accident-prone padawan had to be rushed to the Healers again for something so foolish as venturing out into the worst weather Coruscant had seen in years.

But when is it likely to snow this heavily again? he reminded himself. As he grew older, he and Qui-Gon would only go on more and more missions, taking them away from Coruscant for longer periods of time. For all he knew this was his last chance to have a few hours of fun with his friends in the snow.

Torn between his desire to please Qui-Gon and to do something exciting for a change, Obi-Wan glanced from Garen to Bant to Reeft, then back to Garen. The boy was practically hopping from foot to foot with excitement and impatience, his brown padawan braid doing a dance on his shoulder. The sight only strengthened Obi-Wan’s desire to go with him. How many more chances would he have to do something like this?

One more look at Garen’s fire-lit eyes and something within Obi-Wan loosened. What harm could possibly come of spending a little time outside? It’s only a bit frozen water, he reasoned.

“Meet you in the entrance hall in ten minutes,” he said in a rush, already sprinting for the corridor. With a whoop, Garen and Reeft chased after him.

He barely heard Bant’s quiet exhale over the sound of his own rapid breathing.

“Boys.”

***

Approximately ten minutes later, Obi-Wan leaned against one of the massive columns that supported the entrance hall’s immensely high ceiling. Determined to be as careful as possible so Qui-Gon wouldn’t find out about his sudden excursion onto the ice-covered streets, Obi-Wan had thrown on every piece of warm clothing he could find: three tunics, a thick robe, his durable rough-terrain boots, and a pair of leather gloves. It was a wonder he could still move.

Reeft joined him a minute later, similarly attired, except that in place of his normal robe, he was wearing an oversized tunic of the brightest green Obi-Wan had ever seen.

“Reeft?” he asked hesitantly, lifting an eyebrow. “What in the Force are you wearing?”

The boy glanced down then blushed so hard, his orange cheeks turned an impossible shade of magenta. “Oh, um… You see, it’s my master’s. I couldn’t find my robe. Master Ibes must’ve put it in the laundry again. And, well, I took this out of his closet.”

“You took your master’s pajamas?”

“I, well, I needed something to keep me warm…” Reeft looked around, obviously searching for a way to change the subject. “Hey, where’s Garen?”

“I don’t know.” Obi-Wan squinted down the hall, trying to pick out Garen’s face from those few Jedi who passed them, either coming back to the Temple or venturing out for some purpose that couldn’t wait for the weather to improve.

“Reeft. Obi-Wan.” The strained whisper came from behind them, causing both boys to jump.

Peering around the column, Obi-Wan discovered a bundled up Garen standing in the pillar’s shadow, three flat rectangular objects tucked in the folds of his robe. “What are…?” he started to ask, then paused when Garen wrinkled his nose as if he smelled something repugnant.

“Reeft, what in the Force are you wearing?”

The Dressellian blushed again, even harder this time, and began to sputter. “I—I…”

Deciding to rescue his friend from further humiliation, Obi-Wan interrupted. “He raided his master’s closet. Now, Garen, what are those?” he asked, pointing to the strange objects Garen was trying to hide under his robe.

“Shh!” Garen hissed. “What do you think they are, bantha brain? Trays from the dining hall.” He must have noticed Obi-Wan’s blank look because he rolled his eyes and added, “For sledding?”

“Sledding? On those things?” Reeft chimed in, unknowingly echoing the thoughts of Obi-Wan, who was trying to decide if Garen had finally lost it.

Garen’s eyes gleamed as a knowing grin played on his lips. “You’ll see.”

***

Thick snowflakes stung Obi-Wan’s cheeks and the wind ripped his hood from his head yet again as he watched Garen go careening down the slope on one of the trays. The boys had discovered that the wide, duracrete wall that served as a railing for the Temple’s entrance steps made a perfect makeshift “hill” for sledding, considering there weren’t any real hills left on Coruscant. It took more than a little manipulation with the Force to keep the trays—and their riders—from tipping off of the wall, but after a few tries, Obi-Wan was confident he’d finally mastered it. His turn was next.

Having just completed his run, Reeft raced up the steps toward him, his master’s bright green tunic flapping in the wind and his tray banging against his legs. Once at Obi-Wan’s side, the Dressellian bent forward, dropping his tray and resting his hands on his knees, as he panted for air. “You’d think…they could…have put in…fewer steps,” he gasped out.

“Oh of course not,” Obi-Wan said with a grin. “I bet they used to use them for padawan torture.”

Reeft laughed softly and straightened, his breathing now somewhat under control. “You know, I never thought I’d say it, but this is one of Garen’s better ideas.”

“Agreed.” Obi-Wan’s attention was again fixed on Garen’s sledding form. The boy had finally reached the bottom, and he whooped and hollered as he jumped off of the tray at the last possible second and came to rest gently in the snow, the tray skittering off into the icy street.

“I’m getting kind of hungry though.”

Grinning, Obi-Wan turned back to Reeft and gave his friend a light punch in the shoulder. “When are you not hungry?”

Though he knew Reeft’s pained look was only an act, Obi-Wan decided to relent. He was starting to feel a little hungry himself. “How about one more run and then we convince Garen to go inside?” he suggested. “Besides, my fingers are getting awfully cold.” In fact, they were going numb, along with his toes, ears, nose, and cheeks. If he wanted to keep Qui-Gon ignorant of the whole event, he would have to go inside soon.

Setting his tray on the wall, Obi-Wan’s eyes sighted along the slope as he prepared himself for a final trip. Then, in one fluid motion, he hopped on and the tray began its descent.

Crouching low to remain stable, he tried to concentrate on the smooth, icy surface rushing under him as he had during his other runs, but the snow was falling more heavily now and he kept blinking as it flew into his eyes. He reached farther into the Force to compensate, ignoring the sudden twinge of panic that coiled in his chest.

Only a few more meters, he told himself. I’ll be fine. Just concentrate.

The tray scratched against the ice as he flew along, faster than a bird of prey. Faster and faster and faster. He was almost there!

He sensed it a second too late. A powerful gust of wind slammed into his left side like a ton of duracrete bricks, throwing off his already precarious balance. The tray bucked and tilted underneath him, breaking the hold of his numbed fingers, and sent him tumbling over the side of the wall. The ground rushed up to meet him and then he saw only blackness.

Obi-Wan opened his eyes to tiny ice crystals stinging his face and he quickly blinked to clear his eyes. He was lying on his back in a deep snowdrift; biting wetness was already seeping into his robe and tunics. A few moments later, he became aware of Reeft and Garen calling his name.

“I’m here!” he croaked out as he rolled to his side and slowly pushed his body into a sitting position, assessing his injuries. His head was pounding from the jar of impact, but he noted with relief that nothing seemed seriously hurt. His right arm and knee were throbbing, but he didn’t think they were broken, only badly bruised. He’d been lucky really, he realized, as he’d been near the end of the wall and fell only a few meters.

Slip-sliding his way around the wall, Garen skidded to a halt and dropped to his knees in front of Obi-Wan. Reeft followed more cautiously, but not less urgently. “Are you all right?” Garen spilled out, his eyes wide.

“Yeah, I think so.” Obi-Wan took Garen’s hand and painfully pulled himself to his feet. “Just bruised.”

Garen smiled then, gently laying his hand on Obi-Wan’s shoulder. “You sure have a way of making things interesting, Obi-Wan Kenobi,” he teased, though Obi-Wan could see relief in his eyes.

Reeft put his arm under Obi-Wan’s to give the injured boy support and Garen did the same on the other side. Pausing only long enough to collect the food trays, the boys helped their friend limp inside, teasing him all the way.

***

Obi-Wan hobbled down the corridor toward his and Qui-Gon’s apartment, favoring his aching knee. At the same time, he furiously rubbed his hands together, trying to regain at least some circulation. His hand was poised on the keypad to the apartment’s door when a voice rang out from behind.

“What happened to you?”

Whirling around, Obi-Wan winced as pain shot through his knee. Bant was strolling down the corridor toward him. “It’s a long story,” he whispered, hoping to slip inside his quarters before someone else saw him in his rumpled and thoroughly soaked state.

“You know what I’m going to say, so I won’t even go there,” Bant admonished, crossing her arms like a master who had discovered a youngling up to no good. The words “I told you so” rattled around in his mind.

Shaking her head, Bant sighed. “I have no sympathy.” With that, she continued down the corridor, leaving Obi-Wan to stand in a rapidly expanding puddle.

Fumbling for the keypad, he keyed the door open and stumbled inside, silently pleading with the Force for Qui-Gon to not be sitting in his favorite chair, sipping a cup of tea. Thankfully, the Force was with him this time. The apartment was empty.

Shivering uncontrollably, Obi-Wan quickly shuffled out of his wet clothes and hurried to his room for something dry to wear, forgetting that he’d worn all of his tunics outside. Cursing under his breath, he locked his door to make sure no one walked in on him in while he was dressed in only underwear and riffled through his drawers, searching for something to wear.

He pulled out a pair of blue polka dot pants and a matching shirt. His old pajamas—his awful tenth birthday present from a young Bant, who insisted they looked “pretty.” That was when he learned to never trust little girls to pick out his wardrobe, as Garen wouldn’t stop laughing about it for weeks.

Obi-Wan sighed. They would have to do.

He was just slipping the too-small shirt over his head when he heard the telltale hiss of the apartment door sliding open. He froze. Moments later, a loud thud rattled the starfighter model sitting on his dresser.

His heart dropping into his toes, Obi-Wan slapped his hand to his forehead. His wet clothes! He’d left them lying in front of the door! And…

“Obi-Wan!” Qui-Gon’s voice, sounding thoroughly irritated, rang throughout the apartment.

Swallowing passed the sudden lump in his throat, Obi-Wan frantically looked for a place to hide. Maybe there was a reason he usually listened to Bant…

THE END

I told you it was silly. wink

earlybird-obi-wan - Thanks! Obi-Wan, Anakin, and snow? Sounds like fun. grin

VaderLVR - Glad Obi could bring a little cheer to your day. happy Thanks for reading!

dianethx - Thanks for stopping by! The inspiration for the sleds came from my brother as a matter of fact. It's tradition at his college for students to "borrow" trays from the cafeteria for sledding and then return them come spring. silly

Kes - Glad you liked it. grin I'm also glad you liked the Obi/Bant talk. I think those two make for good character interaction. Bant keeping Obi-Wan in line. wink

Darth_Guy17 - Thanks for reading! Glad you enjoyed it. happy

And since I forgot to say it before - Merry Christmas, everyone! hugs

Very silly indeed. happy But with all those young padawans, that energy just has to come out somehow. Poor Obi-Wan. Loved how he forgot and left his clothes out. Ooooops. He might get some sympathy from Qui-Gon when he sees the bruises, but not too much when Qui-Gon finds out what he was doing.

Obi-Wan offered himself as a highly responsible role model in “Episode II.” He didn’t like reckless driving;
he disapproved of being chained to a big pillar as large animals with pincers approached;
he just said no to deathsticks.
