Prologue
Qui-Gon Jinn looked stern, was his first thought.
He was watching through the transparisteel embrasures of the public transport as it hovered over the wide stretch that led to the Jedi Temple. Its magnificent spires - though he'd heard others describe it as a short, squat structure - rose towards the skyline, piercing through the mundane existence of Coruscant's everyday life, reaching for the Force itself, it seemed to him. His heart filled with a strange, unspeakable emotion. His lips trembled. It had been so long. And so much had happened within the short space he had been away. What would the masters say? How would his clanmates feel?
He was most curious, about Master Jinn. Master Jinn, who stood at the edge of the wide corridor leading towards the hangar, lips pressed togther in a stern line, hands folded tight across his massive chest. Force, but the man looked enormous. A deep line cleft his forehead. His Jedi robes hung from broad shoulders right down to the ground. The only thing at odds with his stiff appearance seemed to be a mass of wavy chestnut hair that billowed in the wind. He looked harsh, forbidding, and completely unimpressed with his surroundings. On the other hand, he was a Master, and had every right to look as though he'd just swallowed an unripe muja for first meal. This was probably his habitual expression. Most masters looked thus, anyway.
He glanced to his left, within the speeder.
Two paces behind him stood Obi-Wan Kenobi, hands clasped behind his back, standing erect. His face was expressionless. Blue-green eyes betrayed nothing but a flicker as they scanned the Temple's spires. They were returning after so long, too. For padawan Kenobi, this had probably been a very long trip. There had been their joint mission to see to - only the Jedi could possibly refer to something of such cataclysmic import as just a mission - and then he'd been away, negotiating a treaty in rare mineral compounds with the planet of the fallen Ambassador. A duty he could not refuse, as he had volunteered for it in the first place. He was impressed with Obi-Wan's capabilities. At twenty cycles, he had managed to accomplish - the rather sketchy, one must admit - the completion of the treaty.
His own duties, he thought with increasing sadness, had hardly been prosaic. Bringing a fallen master back home was not something that one looked forward to.
He hung his head, thoughts and feelings clamouring for attention in a mind that almost seemed to collapse within. Why me, he groaned. Why? Master Ibin was one of the gentlest diplomats the Order had ever known. He did not deserve such a violent end. No matter what the Jedi said about there being no death, just the Force.
You are lost to me forever
, he thought, his eyes unseeing as they gazed at the busy skylines.
He felt a touch on his shoulder and turned, to see Kenobi's sympathetic eyes on him.
"I wish ..." Kenobi began and paused. "I wish it had not ended this way," he finished, and he could see the sadness in those startling blue-green eyes.
Kenobi might be a full six years younger to him, but it could not be denied that he possessed a soft heart. The echoes of shared distress floated towards him through the Force. He acknowledged and accepted it with gratitude.
"Thank you, Obi-Wan," he returned the pressure. "One can only hope that he has found peace in the Force."
Obi-Wan's eyes showed clearly the admiration that he felt for the senior padawan. "In me you will find a true friend," he said in a low voice. "And in my master."
The senior padawan looked up at Master Jinn, who was now much closer to them through the window embrasure; the speeder had come to a rest. "I am grateful," he murmured.
They nodded to each other. He stayed back, while Kenobi stepped out first. He knew that it would be a long time before they could each retire to rest; a great many things needed to be done.

Ah, another great story. The first chapter establishes a grand sweeping yet intimate feel. I loved those little irreverent lines coming from the narrator, such as "...had every right to look as though he'd just swallowed an unripe muja for first meal...Most masters looked thus, anyway." It makes the chapter more striking.
My only complaint though is when are you going to update on your other stories? I'd really love to read a new chapter.

Such a wonderful beginning! But I'm not surprised!
You are lost to me forever, he thought, his eyes unseeing as they gazed at the busy skylines.

"I wish ..." Kenobi began and paused. "I wish it had not ended this way," he finished, and he could see the sadness in those startling blue-green eyes.
Amazing.
Please put me on the PM list for this one.

RE: The Other - JA, AU, (Qui/Obi/Xan)
Note
: Tahl is alive in this one. And the name De Crion is oe's.
EP: 1
Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn walked with slow steps towards the speeder that touched down.
He waited when he had come as close as he could – which was right upto the exit, which hissed open. There were some sounds from within, a few whispers. And then Obi-Wan emerged.
He looked tired, Qui-Gon thought. His Jedi tunics were still crisp, but they held traces of grime that he had obviously not been able to remove. His obi and tabards were a little askew – but it was his face that reflected the most of what he had endured. His cheeks looked a little shrunken, and his face was more angular. A new cleft had appeared on his forehead. Thankfully, his eyes still held the old sparkle – as evidenced by their expression once they set sight on him.
For this, Qui-Gon was thankful.
Far too many times had he seen Obi-Wan lowered on a hover-bed and carried into the Temple, rather than walk into it on his own strength. Those times, though, he had been with his padawan and knew exactly what was the matter with him. Waiting until the boy returned from a mission he had been unable to share was a slightly different experience, he mused. One simply did not know what condition one’s padawan would return in. This mission had been a spectacular disaster in one respect… but Obi-Wan, at least, had returned with no noticeable injury.
The same could be said for senior padawan Bon Ebell as well. But his loss was a loss to the spirit, not the body.
Obi-Wan had stepped out and was now in front of him. He sketched a deep bow. Qui-Gon nodded. He had much to discuss with his padawan, most of which would have to wait until they were in their chambers. Next came Padawan Ebell. His dark brown hair was cut severely, the long braid the only evidence left of his apprenticeship, as it swung to his waist. He climbed down slowly. His mental state was even more obvious: his face looked haggard, and he looked as though he were walking with great difficulty.
Qui-Gon placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “We share your loss, padawan.”
Ebell bowed deeply, his eyes clouded. “It is a kindness, Master Jinn.”
Qui-Gon released him. A vision of Master Dooku flashed through his mind, suddenly – probably on a mission somewhere on some Outer Rim planet. Almost inconsequentially, he found himself hoping that nothing had happened to him. Which was a little ridiculous, as his padawan ties with Dooku had ended ages ago, and they barely saw each other in months. Still. Dooku was his Master, the only teacher he had known, aside from Master Yoda. He entertained a rather selfish hope that he would never live to hear news of the death of Dooku. A rather sentimental wish that Dooku, had he been present, would chide him for.
The next instant, his mind had moved away from former master, to other, more current things.
The funeral of Master Ibin had to be seen to. There was no real reason for Qui-Gon to undertake this responsibility. Any master might have done so - even representatives of the Council. But his padawan had been the one to accompany Master Ibin and his padawan on their mission. They had not been together all the time, splitting and joining at intervals, but Qui-Gon felt duty-bound to stay with Master Ibin until the end. Had their positions been reversed, the other would have done so.
A small box was lowered from the speeder, carried with the utmost respect by the two attendérés within. Qui-Gon took the simple receptacle from them. This was all that remained of Master Ibin. A few bones and some dust. Fortunately, his rejoining of the Force, at least, had been less painful.
He saw Ebell’s face grow pinched at the sight of the box. The young man turned his face away for an instant, before his expression grew wooden.
Qui-Gon turned to see Obi-Wan’s eyes look at Ebell kindly. Obviously, he was lending him support. He placed an arm on Ebell’s shoulder again. “There is no death; there is only the Force.”
The pilot who had maneuvered the speeder into Jedi confines looked incredulous, and slightly stunned. Catching Qui-Gon’s eyes on him, he bowed quickly and disappeared into the vehicle.
Ebell nodded. The speeder hummed, preparing to withdraw.
They walked towards the Temple, robes flapping in the stiff breeze.
Once within the peaceful confines of the Temple itself, they met Masters Windu and Piell, who were waiting to receive Master Ibin’s remains and Ebell. Silence reigned as they stood for a moment, contemplating the fallen master and his last moments.
“Padawan Ebell, will you walk with us to the Memorial Chamber?” Master Piell’s voice was crisp, reflecting a proper blend of respect and a duty that had to be carried out.
A padawan who had just lost his master was entitled to certain options: he could either retire for a period of contemplation, as occasionally happened in the case of a master’s violent and gruesome death, or he could stay until the end of the rites, which were usually his especial privilege.
Ebell chose the latter option. “We saw the beginning together. So shall we see the end,” he repeated the ancient Jedi phrase.
Master Piell’s eyes showed their surprise, but he nodded in understanding. “It shall be so.”
They walked along narrow corridors that led to larger rooms, and another vast corridors filled with bronzium columns. Here, they took a turbo-lift that led them several floors above. The journey was silent. Other Jedi they met on the way bowed respectfully and went on their way, already aware of the news. They would congregate at the rites the next day.
When the turbo-lift opened, they stood in a large cavernous space. Gentle lights glowed from within wall sconces. The room was clothed in brown and black. There was no object in the room save a lone, simple marbeil pedestal. The air was filled with gentle melancholy.
Masters Piell, Windu and Jinn walked to the center, while Obi-Wan and Ebell trailed two paces behind. Their boots echoed in the huge chamber. The masters held the box together for a moment. Then, as though in a conversation only they were a part of, they set it in one precise movement on the pedestal. Then they stepped back.
Silence settled on them for a few moments. Obi-Wan glanced at Ebell, whose face seemed to be carved out of stone. A surge of sympathy filled him again, and he moved a step closer to the young man. Ebell glanced at him with eyes laced with affection and gratitude.
“We meet again, tomorrow, in the early hours of dawn,” said Master Piell. “A message will await you in your chambers.”
They moved away from the pedestal as one. Ebell didn’t, Obi-Wan noticed, look back at the pedestal and the box.
Outside the Chamber, the Masters stood together, while Ebell and Obi-Wan stood a little part.
“What will you do now?” asked Ebell.
Obi-Wan looked at him, surprised a little by Ebell’s question. He’d thought the padawan too wrapped in his sorrow to even think of conversing with others. Now, though, he saw that Ebell was making a valiant effort to take in his surroundings.
“I must submit my report,” he said in his characteristic soft voice. “I suppose my master will decide what is to be done next. I haven’t been in the Temple for quite a while. I probably need to re-schedule my course work.” Force knew how much work he needed to put in. And he wanted to talk to Qui-Gon, meditate with him, perhaps, before they retired for the day. There was a great deal of residual emotions left within, things that he needed to sort out.
He had missed Qui-Gon’s presence greatly, within these weeks.
As the thought passed through him, his eyes moved towards the masters who were conversing in low tones. Surprise widened his eyes as he saw Master Windu raise his hands, gesturing something. Qui-Gon’s eyes were riveted on him, his brows drawn together. He looked from Piell to Windu once or twice, and his mouth had thinned again. Obviously, whatever they were saying was not pleasing him at all.
Obi-Wan felt the edges of their bond touch him with weariness and irritation, and recognized that the emotions were Qui-Gon’s. Despite his exhaustion, he was tempted to smile. He had not been able to claim the comfort of their bond in many days. Impulsively, he sent a tendril of assurance to Qui-Gon, and had the satisfaction of seeing his master’s eyes relax. Qui-Gon threw him a small smile, before going back to his near-silent conversation with his peers. This time, Master Piell was speaking in hushed, hurried tones.
“You must be eager to speak with him,” murmured Ebell, his hands clasped loosely in front of him. His eyes dwelt on Qui-Gon’s profile for a moment.
Obi-Wan felt a twinge of dismay. Had he roused a flood of sorrowful memories in Bon? He decided that he would be truthful. Ebell would only recognize his efforts to hedge, and that was not what the padawan deserved.
“Yes,” he answered simply. Oh, for the comforts of the simple, soft mat in their rooms, the hot, bitter drink that Qui-Gon mixed with his own hands, usually adding a spoon of sweet-powder to it, knowing Obi-Wan’s taste, the shared calm and peace they would discover in meditation – and best of all, news of everything that had happened in his absence from Qui-Gon, as he, Obi-Wan curled up in a corner of his master’s couch …
He had missed the Temple a great deal.
“He must be eager to see you as well,” said Ebell. “After all, it has been … ten weeks, hasn’t it?”
Obi-Wan nodded. “Of course, if there’s another mission coming up …” He looked at the masters. “It certainly looks that way.”
“I must thank you for all that you’ve done.”
Obi-Wan felt himself turn pink. “It was the least I could do. Anyone else would have done the same.”
“You are too modest. You made a friend of my brother in the short time you met him – and for that I will be eternally thankful.”
Obi-Wan drew a sharp breath, chiding his Temple upbringing for his oversight. Ebell had lost not just his master … but a well-loved brother as well. The explosion had killed them both.
Sympathy surged in him once again, as he thought of the loss this meant to Ebell. “He is at peace,” he said in a firm voice. “You must remember that.”
A small, sad smile etched Ebell’s face. “You are a comfort to me, Obi-Wan.” He turned away.
Obi-Wan looked at the Masters to distract himself, and was just in time to see Qui-Gon’s hands drop to his sides. The conversation seemed to have ended. Masters Piell and Windu bowed and walked a little away. There, they waited, as Qui-Gon approached Obi-Wan.
“Master?” Obi-Wan looked at him in some surprise. “What is it? Is something wrong?”
“Not that I can see,” Qui-Gon murmured, as he took Obi-Wan’s elbow and led him a little along the corridor. Ebell moved away respectfully, letting them have their space.
“It appears that the Council wishes to speak with me at once,” Qui-Gon said, his hands burrowing themselves within their sleeves.
“At once? Now?” Obi-Wan asked. Disappointment crept through him. Were they sending Qui-Gon on a mission? Was that why he had been excluded from the conversation? Or was it something to do with Obi-Wan?
Qui-Gon read the question in his eyes correctly. “No, it isn’t anything to do with you, though your mission will probably be discussed. However, that will be done in your presence. This, apparently, is about something else. I shall know once I reach the Council Chamber.”
They haven’t told him yet
? “How long will it be?” The question was impulsive and Obi-Wan could have bitten his tongue once he’d asked it. The Council’s decisions were not to be questioned.
Qui-Gon’s lips twitched into a smile. “As short as possible, if I can help it. But it isn’t a mission. That much I know.”
“Ah.” Obi-Wan felt an absurd tendril of relief flow through him.
“I shall be back soon. In the meanwhile, rest in our chamber. I’ve left a mixture of chithli for you in your room.” He smiled down at the apprentice.
Obi-Wan felt himself return the smile. “Thank you, Master.” He bowed and prepared to move away. Really, if anyone deserved the attention, it was Ebell, who was returning without a soul waiting for him. He even felt a little guilty at having someone to prepare hot chithli for him in his rooms.
//
Don’t be
// came a voice within his mind. //
As much as I pity padawan Ebell, I am glad that you didn’t share the fate of his master
.//
And before he could reply, strong arms caught him in a comprehensive hug. He felt himself relax, even smile, as he felt himself folded in a warm embrace, and let his head rest on Qui-Gon’s shoulder. His own arms tightened around Qui-Gon’s waist.
Beyond them, Ebell gazed sightlessly at the ceiling.
Moments later, Ebell and Obi-Wan were on their way to their respective rooms, as Qui-Gon joined Masters Windu and Piell on his journey towards the Council Chambers.
***
This was a journey that could have been avoided at this moment, Qui-Gon thought as he walked briskly, along wide corridors that led to the turbo-lift. He had been filling his days with relentless work of late, and now that Obi-Wan was back, wanted to return to his chambers for some well-earned rest.
I cannot conceive of why the Council would want to see me at this hour
, he thought, pressing his lips together.
What can they want that cannot wait until tomorrow
? Mace had been particularly insistent, arguing with every shred of his powerful persuasion that it could not wait. Neither Piell nor Windu had given even a hint of what they needed him for. That was perplexing.
Obi-Wan’s disappointed eyes brought a smile to his face. Someone still wished for his presence without wanting endless missions and impossible achievements from him. If one didn’t count training a padawan to knighthood as an impossible task. He would ask Obi-Wan about what had happened, in detail. The boy looked tired beyond measure. He would need a good deal of strength to regain lost ground.
He was just glad, though, that Obi-Wan had returned unscathed. Glad that the chithli mixture sitting in his room would be devoured by the person it was meant for.
Beside him, he noticed Masters Windu and Piell exchange looks. Their shared glance provoked a sharp twinge of curiosity in him.
Strange.
Their journey in the turbo-lift to the Council Chamber was silent. When, at last, they reached the imposing doors to the Chamber, Qui-Gon released a sigh of relief. Soon, he hoped, it would be over and he could retire.
Masters Windu and Piell waited a moment just before the doors. Qui-Gon looked at them, uncomprehending.
“It would be wise to … prepare yourself,” murmured Mace Windu.
The doors swished open. Qui-Gon walked in, puzzled. Prepare himself for what? What had happened? Was there some news about Dooku? Had there been some mishap, after all? Or Tahl? Any of his friends? Something had happened to Yoda, perhaps? The possibilities were endless. He found himself tossing and pulling in various worrying possibilities. Why this shroud of mystery? This caution?
It was beginning to get on his nerves.
The room was silent. The other masters were not present.
Focus on the moment
, he told himself.
He was about to turn and ask Mace the meaning of this late-hour meeting, when the door to the antechamber swished open. Depa Billaba, Yoda, Oppo Rancisis and Plo Koon stepped out. Surprised, he scanned their faces, until his attention was caught by the fifth person to step outside.
The human was tall, and wore a long black cloak that fell from his shoulders to the floor in neat waves. His hood obscured his face … but a sudden, nameless shock passed through Qui-Gon.
As he watched, the cloaked figure raised its hand to its hood and pulled it down – to reveal a handsome face, blue eyes sparkling in the dull light. Black, unruly hair fell in disordered waves to his shoulders.
That face had haunted him in his deepest dreams.
As Xanatos de Crion stared back at him, Qui-Gon was aware of only one thing: the broken circle that scarred his cheek.

I really love how you portray Qui-Gon's and Obi-Wan's relationship. Lovely warm father-son relationship, that just turns me into a mushy pile of goo.
But this is a very evil cliffhanger...

Must come back and edit response on my break - but as always, I love it. Such quiet dignity and strength in the characters.
Now Xanatos!?
I'm back....
//Don’t be// came a voice within his mind. //As much as I pity padawan Ebell, I am glad that you didn’t share the fate of his master.//
And before he could reply, strong arms caught him in a comprehensive hug. He felt himself relax, even smile, as he felt himself folded in a warm embrace, and let his head rest on Qui-Gon’s shoulder. His own arms tightened around Qui-Gon’s waist.
Obi-Wan is showing a lot of compassion, (surprise!) but it's nice of Qui-Gon to show his joy at his padawan's safe return. Hopefully, Obi-Wan will ask Ebell to join him, though I doubt Ebell would.

I love the interactions between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, their small gestures with a wealth of meaning.
Loved this.
Really, he had missed Qui-Gon a great deal.
And now Xan is in the mix and yet the other masters don't seem particularly upset with him being there. I certainly have to wonder why.
Good job. Looking forward to more.

Absolutely wonderful! No suprise, though.
Amazing.
And then that last sentence!
Evil author to leave it there.
But still, I must
Evil author or not.
