“Master Jinn, you are not a soul healer, so please spare me the dramatics of how I’m like this rock.”

Sounds like Obi_wan is just too stubborn. lol

“Because I just want to rest and death is the only way to achieve that. If the council does not condemn me to death, I will do it myself.”

Awwww... sad sad

Oh dear, just what is Obi-Wan planning now?

Oh my lord, things are going to get so much worse for poor Obi-Wan before they even begin to get better.

Oh, dear. Poor kid with all those things stacked against him and now some 'healer' is after him. I don't know if things can get any worse. I wonder what Obi will say when he finds out about the brain damage. I can only imagine he already knows about the injections and how they've ruined his life.

Obi-Wan began to quickly pace the room, his agitation evident in his quick movements and his trembling voice. “I’ve begged you to leave me alone and you refuse. Now you want to help me conquer my darkest thoughts. Let me inform you of something, Master Jinn. I don’t want to be rid of them! I need them to help me do one last thing before…”

Oh, that doesn't sound good!

Great job.

Realizing that he was about to divulge too much information to the Jedi master, Obi-Wan abruptly stopped his ranting. Qui-Gon saw this as an opportunity to do some informing of his own. He stood and blocked the path that the youth had claimed during his almost frantic pacing.

“Before what? Before you die? Let me tell you something, Padawan Kenobi,” Qui-Gon firmly stated. He watched as Obi-Wan appeared to brace himself for the storm that he saw coming.

“Every time someone offers you help, there is no need for you to engage them in a verbal sparring match. You keep hoping that if you push hard enough that I will just throw my hands up and walk away. It is not going to happen, so you might as well accept that fact and allow me to help you.”

Qui-Gon had not meant to raise his voice to the padawan, but his frustration of running head first into the walls that Obi-Wan had erected was beginning to wear thin on the Jedi. Guilt fed into the master’s own regret as Obi-Wan began to back away from the tall Jedi. Qui-Gon silently cursed himself when he realized that he had intimidated the teen. There were many times that he could use his physical stature to emphasize a particular point that needed to be made during the many negotiations that he had presided over. However, intimidation had not been his intent, but he had been perceived as a threat by the padawan.

“Obi-Wan, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell. I just want you to realize that I’m not walking out on you. Please accept my apology.”

Obi-Wan reluctantly nodded his acceptance to the Jedi master. “I…uh…I apologize as well, Master Jinn. I…meant no disrespect. I just…” The young Jedi wrapped his arms around and hugged his shoulders in an effort to bring some kind of comfort and calm his jumbled nerves.

Hoping to encourage Obi-Wan to continue talking, Qui-Gon gently pressed him further. “You just what, Obi-Wan?”

I wonder if Qui had hugged him then, if he would have at first resisted then accepted it. One never knows. Poor kid, he's really a mess, and he wants to die and a healer wants him dead. That has got to be interesting.

Determined to remain calm, Master Nathe sighed. “Master Jinn, you have seen and experienced first-hand his erratic emotional state. He simply can not control the Force with the damage to his brain. I’m sorry that it has to be this way, but for now there is no other alternative. I suggest that you place him in the healer’s wing during his withdrawal.”

“It’s no wonder the boy wants to die,” Qui-Gon whispered to no one in particular. He wanted to help Obi-Wan but he was beginning to wonder what his reasoning was. ~Am I doing this for me or for Obi-Wan?~

With the title and all, I'm sure Obi-Wan will get past this with Qui's help.

Your exploration of all the pain and grief here, without going overboard, is just wonderful. I suspect you're like me, when you hear of so much bad in someone, you wonder what trauma in the past may have pushed them that way - you hear about so many abused kids becoming abusers in turn, or children of drunkards becoming drunkards, because they know nothing else.

Wonderful.

Why doesn't Yoda open the records if he wants Qui-Gon to investigate? thinking

Once outside the healer’s wing, Letni leaned against the wall and slowly released the breath he had been holding. He couldn’t believe that so much had happened since yesterday morning. The healer knew that he had to act cautiously and quickly if he were going to save himself from a life as an outcast.

~I told Elad that this would never work. I’ve got to get rid of those records and I’ve got to get rid of Obi-Wan Kenobi…~

OMG Don't let Letni get to Obi-Wan. worried

Fantastic update. applause

I didn't like Letni even before I met him. And now this. I'd just like to see him try to get rid of Obi-Wan. He'll have to get past Qui Gon first. And that's not gonna happen.

I'm still enjoying this story very much. Keep up the great writing.

This story continues to draw me in, jedidas3. My mind isn't working so well this morning, so my reviews may not be as detailed as before.

Obi-Wan is very disturbed boy. no surprise there, but I find myself agreeing with Qui-Gon in his frustrations that the padawan take one step forward and two steps back. Then again you are not making his healing an easy isssue. There is a feeling of realism here. AT Obi-Wan's last thought in chapter 10, I thought, oh boy, this is not going to be asy on anyone, much less Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, or the Council.

~Master Letni, I can’t believe that you are back. I guess it is rather appropriate since you and my master were two of a kind. I guess they better keep the funeral pyre warm, since you’ll be using it next…~

Excellently cryptic ending to Chapter 10. Obi is, again, on the prowel.

Chapter 11 was fantastic. Your explanation of the use of the drug on Obi-Wan was genius. It is a very clever and original plot device. So not only is Obi-Wan being subject to a midichlorian attacking drug, he was being a abused by his Master. Now, Healer Letni has some explaining to do. Qui-Gon confronting him was rewarding on two counts. We got to vent some frustrations about Obi's treatment, but also force Letni into action.

~I told Elad that this would never work. I’ve got to get rid of those records and I’ve got to get rid of Obi-Wan Kenobi…~

And so is Master Healer Letni! The plot thickens!

Poor, poor Obi! All he wants is some peace, and all he gets is torture and pain! No wonder he feels as though the Force has abandoned him! I'm surprised he endured all that for as long as he did. I'll give him a nice big hug though hugs

Here is the next post as promised!

Chapter 12

Bant sat quietly watching Obi-Wan as he finally drifted off to sleep. She continued to hold his hand, hoping that he would draw some comfort from the simple gesture. She could not bear to think of the constant pain that her friend was in.

Obi-Wan had learned over the past few years to hide his feelings. Most of the other padawans considered him to be strange and aloof, but this never seemed to bother Obi-Wan. He seemed to be able to ignore the stares and whispers behind his back. More than once, Bant and Garen had tried to come to his defense, but Obi-Wan would always tell them that he wasn’t worth the effort.

“Oh, Obi,” Bant whispered, “You are worth it. Why can’t you see that?”

“I’ve been asking that question for nearly two days now.”

Bant was surprised to see Master Jinn standing behind her. The padawan’s thoughts had been so focused on Obi-Wan, she had not noticed the Jedi master had returned.

“I’m sorry, Master Jinn,” the padawan apologized. “I didn’t hear you come in.”

“That’s quite alright, Padawan Eerin. You obviously had your mind on other things,” Qui-Gon softly replied.

Bant shrugged as she released Obi-Wan’s hand and gently laid it on the couch. “I’m just so worried about Obi-Wan. I hate to see him hurting so much. I wish you had known him before he became Master Elad’s apprentice. He used to be so different. Obi-Wan was happy and full of life. He truly wanted nothing more than to be a Jedi. All that started to change after he became a padawan.”

Qui-Gon listened with great interest as Bant spoke of her friend. Gesturing towards the small kitchen area, the master suggested, “Since Obi-Wan is asleep, perhaps it would be a good time to ask you a few questions. We can speak in the kitchen so we don’t disturb him.”

Reluctant to leave her friend, Bant spared a worried glance at Obi-Wan before following the Jedi out of the room. She saw Qui-Gon pick up a voice recorder and then set it on the table as they walked into the kitchen. The older Jedi pulled out a chair for the padawan and motioned for her to sit down. Taking the chair opposite of Bant, he sensed her anxiety about talking to him.

“Don’t be nervous, Padawan Eerin. I just have a few questions to ask you.”

She nodded as she reached for the Force to calm her.

Qui-Gon activated the recorder and began to ask her similar questions to those he had asked Garen. He found that her answers matched Garen’s and that their observations about their friend were the same as well. The Jedi master decided to take his questioning to another level.

“Padawan Eerin, has Obi-Wan ever said anything to you about being given any type of drug?”

“No. I don’t think…wait a minute,” she said, searching her mind for the nagging memory that did not want to be suppressed. “One day, Obi-Wan missed class and I went to check on him. When he finally came to the door, he looked horrible. He had been sick all day and he told me that he was waiting for Master Elad to return with his medicine.”

“You said he was ill? How so?” inquired the master.

“He was feverish and aching all over. He couldn’t stop shaking and he acted like the tremors were hurting him,” Bant recalled.

“Did you try and take him to the healers?”

“Yes. He kept refusing at first saying that this had happened before and once he got his medicine, he would be okay. But I kept on pressing him until I finally thought that I had him talked into it. Then, Master Elad walked in and Obi quickly changed his mind.”

“How soon did you see him after this episode?” Qui-Gon asked.

“He was back in class the next day. He still looked horrible but he wasn’t sick. I remember that he got in trouble for falling asleep and was dismissed from class.”

“Did you go and check on him afterwards?”

“Of course,” she answered. “But when I got there, Master Elad would not allow me to see him. But…”

“But what?” Qui-Gon prompted.

“I thought I could hear Obi crying,” she replied with a hint of sadness in her voice. “I didn’t see him for two days and by that time, he was acting as if nothing was wrong.”

Leaning back in his chair, Qui-Gon took a moment to process what Bant had told him. Before he could begin to utter the next question, the Jedi heard the sound of a door opening and closing.

The master and padawan exchanged knowing glances as they quickly stood and rushed into the common area. They both knew that they would find the couch empty.

“I should have known better than to let him out of my sight,” the exasperated master said.

“I thought he was asleep,” Bant said.

“Don’t forget young one, Obi-Wan has become an expert in projecting false appearances. I’ve got to find him before he does something rash.”

Qui-Gon left his quarters in search of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Bant ran along side, trying to keep up with the long, purposeful strides of the Jedi master.

“Do you have any idea where he could be?” Bant asked breathlessly.

“I have a couple of ideas. However, if you could find Padawan Muln and look in some of Obi-Wan’s favorite places in the temple, the possibilities would be narrowed down more quickly,” Qui-Gon instructed.

“Okay, but where are you going?”

“To a funeral.”

“You don’t think…” Bant did not want to think about the implications of the master’s statement.

“You just concentrate on what you have to do. Contact me if you find anything and I will do the same. If we don’t find him, we will regroup here in two hours.” He placed his hand on the padawan’s shoulder in an attempt to offer reassurance and to remind her of the importance of what he was about to say. “We need to keep this between us. It would not do Obi-Wan any good if certain people discovered that he had escaped my custody. If someone finds him before we do, I don’t think the Council will be so forgiving.”

Nodding her understanding, Bant went to find Garen and Qui-Gon headed towards the lift. As he impatiently waited, he reached out with the Force to see if he could sense the teen’s presence. The only thing that the master could detect was the sense of darkness that he had felt within the youth earlier. ~Please don’t do anything that you will regret.~

The lift door opened allowing the Jedi master to enter. Selecting the desired floor, he silently hoped that he was wrong and that Obi-Wan would not be at the funeral of Master Elad.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obi-Wan hid in the shadows as he watched various masters and padawans enter the room. They had all come to pay their respects to his master. It didn’t seem right that a man so evil should receive so much admiration. He pressed himself further into the darkness as he watched the members of the Council come in and gather around the funeral pyre. However, he wasn’t concerned with their presence as he continued to scan the growing crowd for one particular person—Master Letni.
Ever since he had discovered that Letni had returned to the temple, he had not been able to quench the growing desire to have his revenge on the master. He knew that such thoughts and actions were of the dark side. He found that he couldn’t bring himself to care. Obi-Wan knew that he would never be a Jedi and at this point in his life, it did not matter to him any longer.
Obi-Wan could feel the anger welling up inside him as he watched Master Letni enter the room. He wanted nothing more than to be rid of him, but he knew that he had to wait. This was not the time or the place to carry out his plan.
~You’re just the perfect picture of a grieving friend, aren’t you? Don’t worry Master Letni, soon you will join him.~
Obi-Wan continued to glare daggers at the healer as the funeral began. He listened as Letni provided the eulogy and sang the praises of Master Elad. He watched as the funeral pyre was lit and the flames consumed the shell of the demon that had dared called himself a Jedi Master. There was neither sadness nor regret in Obi-Wan’s eyes as he hoped, that in some way, the Force would allow his master to feel some of the pain that he had felt as a padawan over the past few years.
Catching a glimpse of Qui-Gon Jinn on the outskirts of the crowd, Obi-Wan berated himself for not paying closer attention to his surroundings.
~So, you figured out where I am. Well, I can’t allow you to find me just yet. I have something I have to do.~
The padawan slipped out of the room and hid in the alcove, watching the mourners leave. His eyes followed Master Letni as the healer spoke with several other masters who were friends of Elad’s.
When Letni finally headed towards the lift, Obi-Wan donned his hood and followed him. The lift doors closed and Obi-Wan removed his hood as his hardened gaze met that of the healer. As the healer moved towards him, Obi-Wan pulled a knife out of the sheath hidden beneath his robe.
“I believe we have some unfinished business, Master Letni.”
A smile of pure evil spread across the face of the master as he calmly replied, “I believe that you are right, Padawan Kenobi. I’ve been expecting you. I knew that you would show up sooner or later. I must admit that I’m surprised that you eluded Master Jinn long enough to escape.”
“That is none of your concern. The only thing that you have to worry about is how you’re going to die. Would you like it to happen quickly or would you prefer to suffer?”
The smile that was plastered on the healer’s face never faded as he used the Force to pull the knife from the padawan’s hand. Obi-Wan crumpled to the floor as a wave of sheer agony swept through him. Letni picked the youth off of the floor and using the Force, held Obi-Wan against the wall of the lift.
Obi-Wan refused to cry out in pain as he felt the Force flowing through him. He would not give the healer the satisfaction of showing the deep level of pain he was feeling. Sweat beaded on the padawan’s forehead as he tried to struggle against the hold the healer had on him. His efforts proved to be in vain as any movement only compounded the sea of torment that was raging through his body.
Letni’s face was merely inches from Obi-Wan’s as he took the knife and caressed it over the padawan’s cheek. A thin trickle of blood seeped onto Obi-Wan’s robe as the healer continued his taunts.
“You are either very brave or very foolish,” Letni snarled. “You think that you can come after me with a knife and nothing else? You can’t even use the Force to help you. Perhaps if you had been completely honest with Master Jinn, he could have helped you. You always had to learn your lessons the hard way.”
Obi-Wan summoned up what little strength that he could manage and spit in Letni’s face. His moment of satisfaction was short lived when the healer viciously backhanded him.
Blood began pouring from his nose and mingled with the blood that had already stained his robe. A dazed Obi-Wan could barely register the fact that the lift had stopped and Letni was physically carrying him.
Carefully avoiding crowded corridors, Letni made his way to his quarters. He carelessly deposited his burden on the floor. “You were so anxious to get revenge; you allowed your emotions to rule your thoughts and didn’t think things through.”
Letni gave a swift kick to the youth’s midsection to emphasize his disgust and hatred that he felt towards the teen.
“You are nothing but trouble. Elad should have killed you when he had the chance. I guess that I will have to do it for him. Thankfully though, I will be a little more careful than you have been.”
Obi-Wan’s eyes widened in fear as the healer knelt down beside him with the knife still in hand. “Does this bring back memories, Padawan Kenobi? Do you remember the hard lessons that you had to learn?”
Carefully watching the knife, Obi-Wan failed to see the hypo in the healer’s other hand until he felt it against his neck. “Good night, Padawan. Rest well because you’re going to need it.”
Obi-Wan could not force his eyes to stay open any longer as he surrendered to the effects of the hypo. He only had time to think one word as he drifted into unconsciousness. ~Help!~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When the last of the mourners had filed out of the funeral chamber, Master Yoda remained behind to speak to the unexpected visitor.

“I did not think you were attending the funeral. Surprising it is to find you here.” Yoda looked up at the tall Jedi master who had been trying to remain unobtrusive during the ceremony.

“Sensed your presence I did as well as another’s.”

Qui-Gon looked down in amazement at the ancient master. “You knew he was here?”

“Masked his presence from the others I did. He was not here to cause trouble during the funeral. No more trouble the boy needs,” Yoda replied.

“If he wasn’t here to sabotage the funeral, then why was he here?” Qui-Gon wondered. “Did you see him leave?”

“No, to the shadows the padawan fled. Waiting for someone he seemed to be.”

“Waiting for someone? Who would he be…” A weak cry for help broke through the master’s shields and the realization of whom the plea belonged to dawned upon Qui-Gon as he ran from the chamber.

“Where are you going?” Yoda demanded.

“Have security come to Master Letni’s quarters,” Qui-Gon yelled back to the Jedi master. “I have a bad feeling about this…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Master Letni whirled around at the sound of his door opening revealing the looming figure of Master Jinn. Pinning the healer up against the wall, Qui-Gon’s arm pressed into Letni’s throat.
“Where is he? Where is Obi-Wan?” Qui-Gon did not attempt to control his anger at the healer.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Letni gasped.
“Obi-Wan Kenobi. What have you done with him?”
“Please, Master Jinn…” Letni begged.
Qui-Gon struggled against the hands that were trying to pull him away from the healer. “Leave me alone!” he shouted to no one in particular.
Finally released from Qui-Gon’s firm hold, Letni began to try and take in the air that he had been deprived of by the large Jedi. He quickly regained his composure and addressed the rogue master.
“Master Jinn. I don’t appreciate you bursting into my quarters and demanding to know the whereabouts of a padawan who is supposed to be in your capable hands.”
“I don’t care what you do or do not appreciate, Master Letni. Obi-Wan Kenobi is missing and I believe that you had something to do with it.” Qui-Gon took a step closer to the healer and allowed his icy gaze to try and penetrate the stubborn will of the healer. “Now, where is he?”
“I don’t know,” the healer reiterated. “Please feel free to search my quarters. If you don’t find anything, you will leave.”
Qui-Gon took the liberty to begin his own search as he sought the Force for guidance. Looking in all the rooms and closets, he was frustrated that he did not find Obi-Wan. His disappointment grew when Jedi security informed them that they had not found any trace of the padawan.
“I’d like him detained for questioning,” Qui-Gon informed the lead security officer.
“I’m sorry but we have no reason to detain him, Master Jinn,” the security guard stated.
“I think you better leave Master Jinn,” the healer said. “Before I have you arrested for harassment and anything else I can think of.”
Qui-Gon stood there unwavering, making sure that the healer knew that he was not giving up. “I’ll be watching you. You better hope that you didn’t have anything to do with his disappearance or that he has not been injured. When I do find him, I’m sure that you will have quite a bit to answer for.”
The Jedi master was about to leave when Master Yoda entered the room. Curious as to what the wizened master would say, Qui-Gon changed his mind and moved to stand next to Yoda.
Closing his eyes, the tiny master reached out with the tendrils of the Force to search for answers.
Yoda finally turned to face the healer. “Darkness I sense. Do you know where it comes from?”
“No, Master Yoda,” Letni replied. He knew exactly where the darkness was—it was in his heart.
“Before the Council you will appear and unseal the padawan’s records,” Yoda instructed the healer. “An answer to this mystery we will discover. You will be there in one hour.”
Letni bowed as he replied, “Yes Master Yoda. I will be there.”
Master Yoda, Master Jinn, and the security officers left the healer alone. Letni watched the entourage leave as a cunning smile danced across his lips.
~I’ll be there in one hour, Master Yoda. Unfortunately, the records will not be. Now, to finish taking care of Padawan Kenobi…~
Oh...my...I don't know what to say. Riveting chapter. The only good part of it is that Obi actually reached out to Qui for help. Now if Qui only gets to him in time to save his life.
Oh dear. What did he do with Obi-Wan??
WHile I can't codone Obi-Wan's attempt, he still should have known to be more careful around the Jedi, certainly if he can't touch the OFrce. sad
