Title: A Year and a Day
Author: lindemacil
Time: 11 years before TPM
Characters: OCs, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, various others
Genre: various, diary format
Summary: Padawan Koren Panewa is given a year-long assignment by her master.
Notes: the first fic in a long, long while; we’ll see how it goes. This was inspired by the Diary Challenge, but I’m not sure if I qualify as a contender, considering my late start. Once I got started with it, it kept rolling, so we’ll see where it takes me. Posting schedule should be every Tuesday and Friday.

Entry 001:

I dislike it greatly when my Master takes it upon herself to inform me of the customs of my people. How many times have I told her that I am not interested in the particulars of the circumstances of my birth? I am a Jedi; the Temple is my home. I am pleased that Master Leorit has strong ties to her origins, but she refuses to accept that I do not follow her lead.

It seems that Mehrinians, upon reaching their fifteenth year, have a coming of age ritual that requires writing in a journal every day. They are presented on their fifteenth lifedays with journals intended to last exactly one year and one day. At the end of this period (and thus, in their sixteenth year), they are considered adults in full standing. The journal represents the year of transition from child to adult.

If it were up to me, I would do away with lifedays, but Master Leorit is one of those sentimental types, and she has given me some sort of little gift for each lifeday since I became her padawan four years ago. This year, she gave me this datapad and a lengthy explanation of the Mehrinian tradition of journaling. It’s the first time I’ve ever received an assignment for my lifeday. I think I rather preferred the silly, useless things she usually gives me.

To “make things more fun,” she’s going to start a journal of her own. She says that journals are meant to be for personal thoughts and such, but she said I could also include observations on the assignments and work I’ll be doing in the coming year.

Master Leorit is a fine Jedi, and I am glad she is my master. But sometimes, I do wonder about her.

So, what I shall end up with is 351 entries of errant ramblings that few others would be interested in. How truly marvelous.

Entry 002:

Obi-Wan found me finishing yesterday’s entry and asked me what I was doing. When I explained, he grimaced and said he was glad Master Jinn wasn’t making him do something silly like writing a diary. I can’t say that I would prefer to have Master Jinn as my master (he and Master Leorit are rather alike sometimes), but at least he isn’t giving Obi-Wan journaling assignments.

I’m glad that Master Jinn finally chose Obi-Wan as his padawan last year. We were crèche-mates until I came to Master Leorit, and even by that time, most of the others had been chosen by Knights and Masters. Obi-Wan was one of the last chosen, and for a while, it seemed like he’d be going to the AgriCorps or something.

The Temple just wouldn’t be the same without Little Brother. I still call him that sometimes, mainly because he hates it. Now that he’s a padawan, he thinks he’s too old for his pet name. I told him that, because I’ll always be a year older than him, I’ll always be able to call him Little Brother, no matter how grown-up he gets. I look forward, twenty years from now, to calling him Little Brother in front of his padawan. He can beg all he likes; I’m still going to do it.

He gave me a suggestion: we get so much work and have so many assignments, I can do some exercises and include notes here. That’s a record of what I’m doing, after all. Maybe then I won’t have to ramble on and on about random things just to get a single entry in.

Entry 008:

[Entry contains a classical analysis of a trio of Krippian operas and their general motifs. Inserted into the entry are several soundbites and excerpts from the operas.]

Entry 009:

[Entry contains librettos from the previous day’s Krippian operas. The librettos are in their original language with Basic translation. Attached to the libretto are notes regarding the previous analysis.]

Entry 010:

Master Leorit has just examined my journal, and she was quite disappointed to find its contents lacking. She would prefer that my entries be more personal in nature.

“I thought you said the Mehrinians keep their journals secret until the end of the year,” I said.

Poor Master Leorit. She looked like a youngling with her hand caught in the sweets bin. “Yes, but I understand that they don’t leave them lying around to be found by just anyone.”

“I didn’t think I had to hide it,” I replied.

“I wanted to make sure you were completing your assignment.” She said this with the air of someone who knows what’s best, but she was flushing when she said it.

“And so I am.”

“But you’ve just filled it with extra work and research notes. There’s little of your personal thoughts and feelings here.”

I sighed, realizing that I wouldn’t get very far until I gave her exactly what she wanted. So, I asked her.

“You should be reflecting on your day – what happened to you, your thoughts, how you feel about things. Your emotions and observations are of utmost importance. And make it conversational. You don’t have to be so formal. Talk as you normally would.”

Certainly. I shall make an effort of it.

I asked Master Leorit if I might see her journal, given her perusal of mine. She told me it doesn’t work that way. I can imagine why. At least I was actually writing in mine.

Thank you, ladies! Your comments are much appreciated!
=====

Entry 011:

Obi-Wan sought me out this morning to tell me that Master Jinn has just presented him with a personal datapad to serve as his journal. He was quite displeased about it, understandably. At least Master Jinn said that he needn't keep the journal daily, the way I do. Despite that, Obi-Wan would prefer that I keep Master Leorit from giving his master any more big ideas.

I explained to him that it’s neither my fault nor the Mehrinians’ faults. After all, they do this during their fifteenth year, and Obi-Wan is only fourteen. He has no one to blame but Master Jinn.

Let me amend that. I wouldn’t say Master Leorit is entirely without blame. It was her idea in the first place.

I doubt that Master Leorit is the only master who requires her padawan to keep a journal. Perhaps she’s just the only one cruel enough to enforce it for every single day.

Entry 012:

Master Leorit’s insistence that I write an entry for every day seems particularly banal on days such as this, when nothing exciting happens AT ALL.

I don’t really have a problem with that. Excitement is over-rated. I’m happy enough meditating in the Room of a Thousand Fountains or spending time at the loom, which is almost like a meditation itself when I think about it. Perfectly ordinary days are wonderful simply because they are ordinary, and I like them.

How does a regular citzen of the Republic view the life of a Jedi? Spending hours in meditation and contemplation? Hopping from planet to planet, meeting new people and experiencing new things? Getting involved in galactic intrigue? That’s what the holos would have you think.

It’s a little bit like all that, but certainly not all the time. Even Jedi Masters spend a lot of time practicing their skills or sitting in on classes and learning new ones. And there are a good number of Jedi who don’t go on missions all that often; some Knights and Masters rarely leave the Temple at all, so focused are they on teaching younglings or taking care of the crèche.

Going on missions is fun and all, but it’s not easy work. Jedi have to be diplomats, liaisons, cultural experts, and ‘saber-masters – sometimes all at the same time. While we have the Force to help us on our missions, it takes time and effort to use it well enough to make a difference. Being a Jedi is like being a student for your entire life.

Entry 013:

Today’s schedule was as follows:

0600: I awake to my preset alarm, which Master Leorit sleeps through. As usual. I hurry to the refresher, leaving the alarm on.

0620: Master Leorit still asleep when I get out of the refresher. I spend ten minutes waking her up.

0630: I prepare breakfast while Master Leorit stares at the wall in her attempt to become lucid. Breakfast is oat mush with cream and lio-lio berries from Oppo IV. Master Leorit’s favorite. They’re small and oval and bright orange and taste quite tart. I prefer hopper melons from that moon of Jurga that I can never spell right.

0700: Master Leorit finally awake after the oat mush and a cup of StimCaf. We sit down to meditate together. How she can do that after all the sugar in her mush and that StimCaf, I’ll never know.

0800: Lightsaber practice in one of the training rooms. I work with Master Illikrik on Form V. Master Leorit typically uses Form III, which is why she no longer mentors me in that respect. She says she approves, but sometimes I think she feels left out.

0900: Study time begins after a short snack of protein bars. Our study varies from day to day, depending on what has Master Leorit’s interest and what my schedule is like. Today is a day with Master Leorit, and she is spurred to examine trends in modern Coruscanti art. We spend most of the morning in the archives researching some of the less prominent artists in the past twenty years. I am sure there will be a writing assignment in my future.

1215: Lunch at the refectory with Master Manzo and his padawan Cynari Willfire. They are leaving tomorrow for a journey-mission that they can’t talk much about. Probably something diplomatic; Master Manzo is an excellent diplomat. He can also be very deceptive – he seems like a crazy old man who moves at his own exceedingly slow pace, but he’s really quite brilliant, if a little forgetful sometimes. Cynari is the opposite, always on the go and always intense. She’s tall and slender, a contrast to his short stature. I suppose they’re no odder a pair than Master Leorit and I.

1300: Back to the archives to continue our research. I was right – I will have a writing assignment. Comparison of some sort. I’m thinking about comparing the use of betrayal as a theme is one artist’s paintings. It’s quite prominent, often with a man being betrayed by a woman in some way. Oddly enough, it’s a female artist. I shall have to do some digging into her background.

1500: Astrometrics class! A lot of my crèche-mates, including Obi-Wan, are in this class. Master Teke’tek is quite the lively teacher, jumping about the room and imitating bird calls to keep us all awake. It’s our favorite afternoon class.

1700: Downtime. Obi-Wan, Nooli, Oto, and I go to the library to complete our homework for tomorrow’s biology class. I’m doing my paper on the redundancies of the respiratory system of the aquatic Kheplorins. Afterwards, we go up to one of the music lounges to listen a while before dinner.

1930: Dinner at the refectory. Some kind of braised meat with gravy and a pile of slimy green vegetables. I don’t pay much attention to it. Master Leorit and Master Jinn eat with us and discuss the possibility of going to an artist’s district and seeing some local work. I told Master Jinn about my idea for my paper, and he gave me the names of two other artists to look at as well. He says the styles are all different, but the themes are closely related.

2015: Free time. Master Leorit goes off to meet with some friends, probably to complain about padawans and gossip about the latest Temple goings-on. I go to the hydroponics station to see if any of my plant dyes are ready for harvest. Occuta is there working on her own plants. She asks me if I’ve had any time to weave, but it’s been almost five days since I last sat at my loom. She tells me about a new pattern she’s working on.

2145: Back to quarters to prepare for bedtime. Master Leorit is actually working on her journal datapad when I come in. After going to the refresher, I settle down to work on this entry.

2215: Lights out. Until tomorrow.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments! I'm so glad you're enjoying the diary. I'm getting a better idea of Koren's voice now, and I think it's only a matter of time before she gets into some sort of trouble. So with any luck, there'll be an actual plot coming up soon!

=====

Entry 014:

I’m rather proud of my biology essay. Master Grr’kk will no doubt have us write another one before the end of this class-block.

The afternoon classes rotate every standard five-day week. Mine are: astrometrics, biology, political theory, a language class of our choice (advanced Sullustan for me), and the usual cultural relativity class. Padawans typically continue such a block of classes until they've been a padawan 8-10 standard years, after which their training under their masters intensifies in preparation for the Trials. Class-block duration is five standard months; after that, instead of going to classes, Knight-Padawan teams are sent on off-world missions to put our knowledge to practical use. Mission-block duration is also five months, after which the whole thing starts over again.

As a part of Tiger Clan, my class-block rotation ends in eighteen days. Master Leorit has already hinted that the Council may select a long-term mission for us this time. I’ve been off-world on missions before, but never for more than a ten-day and never beyond the Inner Rim. I knew it had to come eventually; once a padawan reaches a certain age, they’re expected to accompany their masters on longer, more dangerous missions.

I guess it just goes to show that I really am growing up.

Entry 015:

Finally got to spend some time at the loom today. About time.

It’s not my loom, of course – it’s one of the communal things that the Temple has for everyone to use. There are some true masters of weaving here at the Temple, and I have learned much from them. Especially Occuta, and she’s not even a Jedi Knight yet, just a Padawan like me. She’s older, of course, by several years. Her master is one of the herbalists, and I’ve learned most of my dyeing techniques from them.

Master Leorit is from Alderaan, and as I’ve said, she’s very much in touch with her homeworld. She’s even met her family. When I first became her padawan, she explained to me that everyone visualizes the Force differently. For her, it’s a landscape, a gently rolling plain like those on Alderaan. It’s nature – life, pure and simple.

Until that point, I had not considered that I could actually see the Force. I only knew that I could access it and allow it to work through me. I was eager to discover how the Force would reveal itself to me.

We meditated on it. Days became weeks. Weeks became months. I became increasingly frustrated.

One day, Master Leorit took me to a room in the Temple that I’d never seen before. It was a room tucked away from the rest, a quiet room except for the clicking of shuttles and the whir of the spinning wheels. Master Leorit took me to a strange contraption that she called an Alderaanian loom, and she sat me down at it and began to explain how it worked. She showed me how to place the threads and start the shuttle. Then she stepped back and waited for me to continue.

And everything fell into place. The Force opened up before me, and I suddenly understood the exhilaration that Master Leorit had expressed when she described her Force visions. Patterns emerged in my mind, lifelines in the Force that glowed and twitched with energy.

So. Now, the Force is, for me, a tapestry, the threads coming together to form fitting patterns, guiding my hands even as I guide threads into place. I met Occuta when I decided to start making my own dyes and spinning my own thread last year. Most of the time, my creations are too personal to mean anything to anyone else, but that’s not what’s important. I have become a creator.

Entry 016:

Master Jinn is going to take Obi-Wan, Nooli, and me to Moritan Row, a nearby artist’s district, tomorrow. Master Tarruck has a prior arrangement, and Master Leorit has been called to a meeting with the Council. That really shouldn’t take too long, but Master Leorit said we should go on without her. No arguments from us. Now there’s a better chance that Master Jinn will get distracted by one of the artist exhibits, and we’ll be able to slip off and do some exploring without having to worry about writing essays about it later.

Doesn’t sound like very good padawan behavior, does it? We’re not planning on doing anything bad – it’s just nice to be free of a master’s rein every once in a while. Besides, Master Jinn is really the best chaperone. He knows a lot of strange things about Coruscant, like how long it takes for authorities to respond to a Code 1001, which we believe has something to do with a public dress code of some sort. Master Jinn refused to explain in full.

And he always treats us to abha cakes. They’re super-sweet treats made from rice paste with candied fruits and sugared nuts embedded in them. We’re not supposed to eat them (it’s no surprise that they’re terribly unhealthy) but Master Jinn says that it’s okay to spoil yourself every once in a while. I think he buys them for us because he loves them so much himself – every time, he always slips one or two into his pockets for later!

code 1001? I wanna know what that is and just why it is that Master Jinn would know it. Of course he knows all of the strange things that goes on in Coruscant.

I do love the Padawans figuring they will be able to sneak off when he gets distracted.

I don't know though. he would does know how to tell you when you haven't done something correct.

Thanks for the update! rose
