BROKEN CIRCUIT

"A unique situation, this is," Yoda said, his image in the holoprojector shimmering with static fuzz. "A unique situation, this is." He rubbed his balding head slowly. "Take full responsibility, we do."

Ril Keltar shook his head. "Unique, it is, yes. Has this ever happened before?"

Senior Council Member Van Spicer leaned forward. "A Jedi arrives to pick up a potential learner child only to find that someone has already been there, posing as the Jedi, and taken the child? Not that I am aware of, no."

"But I disagree with you, respectfully," Keltar said, "On the other statement, Master Yoda."

"Respectful, are you?" Yoda said. "A first, this is; Master Keltar being respectful to the Council."

Let it ride, Keltar thought. Now isn't the time. "It's not your fault, is what I mean. The ship broke down on the way here; we were delayed by several days trying to get it repaired."

"Selected the ship for you, we did," Yoda said, seemingly unwilling to let the point go. Spicer raised a hand and Yoda quieted himself.

Spicer said, "Point made on both sides. We will dispatch a team of investigators . . ."

"No," Keltar said. "I'm on the ground here already. I'll find out who took him and where. I have contacts with the police force here already. I'm in a position to move on this immediately. According to the parents . . ."

"Have they been questioned?" Spicer asked.

"They are being questioned as we speak by my police contact," Keltar said. "But one thing I do know; the child was taken only two days ago in the early morning. At most, the kidnappers are only two and a half days ahead of us."

"With a hyperdrive, that could put them anywhere," Spicer said.

"Yes, but there's no reason to wait for a team of Jedi from Coruscant to get here; by that time, the trail will be over a week cold and we'll have lost this child for good," Keltar snapped. Bridle your tongue, he reminded himself.

There was a knock at the door. Keltar turned his head as it slid open. His Padawan, Enk Loswell was there, along with Dan Mytral, the police contact Keltar had mentioned to the Council. Without a word, Mytral extended a paper.

Keltar took it, glanced at the emblem sketched sloppily on the paper. He looked back into the holoprojector. "We have a lead."

Spicer leaned forward. "So soon?"

Mytral whispered from out of holoprojector range. "That emblem was on the belt buckle of the man who took the child."

Keltar raised the paper, flattened against the holoprojector. On Coruscant, in the Council chamber, they would see only the emblem, here only his voice. Keltar mused in a small part of his mind that he did indeed have a flair for the dramatic. "Family and Future," he said flatly. "It's Family and Future."

grin A great start to Part 2! Keltar has a clue - yay! I have no idea what he means by "it's Family and Future," but that's part of the suspense. wink I love Keltar's flair for the dramatic. tongue Hopefully we'll see more of that.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. mischief

"Family and Future," he said flatly. "It's Family and Future."

Hmmm...what could that mean? From the way Keltar reacted, doesn't sound like a group the Jedi would be friendly with.

Allow me to apologize for the incredibly long pause between posts; I had a vacation, got sick, ran a contest in the Amp . . . but I'm back and will hopefully slip back into a better rhythym. And here's a nice long one for you all. happy

*************************************

Keltar was setting the pace down the hall of the police station and setting it at a rather high tempo. Loswell was jogging next to him, Mytral, amazingly, walking backwards in front of him, somehow managing to dodge all oncoming coworkers and stationary objects. Perhaps, Keltar mused, he should have Mytral tested for Jedi abilities as well.

"All right," Mytral was saying, "So the parents give us the chronology thus: shuttle touches down in their yard, fellow gets off, hands over the paperwork and takes the kid on the ship. He did sign a paper he left with them, but the signature is utterly illegible. Jedi and Doctors, you know, with the handwriting."

"Right," Keltar said. "And you're checking . . ."

"Checking it through our system but I'm betting it's not his real name and probably not a name at all, just a piece of, what you say, conceptual artwork, scribbles, you know?" Mytral shrugged. "We'll see. No fingerprints on anything, but we have this emblem off his belt, which you're going to explain to me here in a second," Keltar nodded, "And a pretty good description. We're checking it through the system too."

"No use," Keltar said. "He'll be off planet."

"Doubtless, but worth a try," Mytral said. He spun around and slapped open a door. "In here and we'll check progress. Now, what's this Family and Future?"

Keltar blew out a long breath of tension. "A virulently anti-Jedi group. They object to the idea of taking children away from their parents at such a young age."

"And they've done this kind of thing before?" Mytral said, pausing at a console. "Max, we're here, where are we?"

"No," Keltar said. "Mostly legislation in the various Senates of different planets; they try to block us legally. And some civil disobedience. Sit ins at the homes of potential candidates to try to intimidate us. Of late, even a couple of acts of sabotage."

"So, maybe this is the next step in the escalation?" Mytral said as a young man in uniform jogged up, holding a datapad. "Max."

Max extended the pad. "We've got a match on the description of the first man."

"First man?" Loswell said.

"Yeah," Mytral said. "There was another one. Never came off the ship, but the father saw him up the ramp, watching."

"So, who is he?" Keltar said, leaning over Mytral's shoulder.

"Local boy," Max said. "Small time thief, some limited slicing. Nothing much. Kidnapping is way up the beam for this guy. Never done anything even remotely like it before."

"But you're sure?" Mytral said.

"Matches, doesn't he?" Max said. "And the parents IDed him dead away."

"APB?" Mytral said.

"Don't get insulting," Max said.

"Just checking," Mytral responded. "Good work. So, this Family and Future group . . ."

"Obviously, they've not operated around here before," Keltar said. "This is obviously the first time you've heard of them."

"I find it hard to believe they'd have a big operation around here," Mytral said. "We're a laid back planet but not that laid back."

"Regardless," Keltar said, "Check our boy here," he tapped the datapad, memorized the name, "This Silvan Xerton with the search terms Family and Future. And try running the description of this second man through that database as well. I presume you've just checked locally."

"Yes," Max said. "I'm on it."

"Well, not a bad start for a backwards planet like this," Mytral said.

"Yeah, except our friends with the kid aren't at all backwards, I'm betting and they have a good start on us. Xerton's got to be light years away from here by now, along with this other man."

Max materialized again at Mytral's elbow. He tugged at the other man's sleeve and the detective lowered his head to allow the younger man to whisper in his ear. He straightened. "Make a bet?"

"On what?" Keltar said.

"Xerton being light years away," Mytral said.

"What?" Keltar said, snapping to attention.

Mytral smirked. "Try fifteen kilometers, buying passage off planet at the spaceport."

"Damn," Enk said. "Those APBs . . ."

"Kriffing amazing," Mytral said. "Amazing what we rustics are capable of when called upon."

"I'm calling upon you again," Keltar said, spinning on his heel.

"I'm on you," Mytral said, stepping to follow.

"Let's go get him," Keltar said.

I re-read the first post and loved Keltar's flair for the dramatic. laugh I hope it continues.

laugh Reminds me of those shows and movies where the FBI agents come in and try to push around the local detectives. Love that dynamic here.

The cantina was smoky, noisy, brilliant, wonderful. Buffer turned to the man seated next to him at the table. "That's him at the bar, Cap. That's Dun Weir."

Cap nodded. "And you can introduce me?"

"We worked together a few months back on something," Buffer said. "I'm going out on a limb here though. And he may not want you."

"That's fine," Cap said. "You just get me next to him. All I'm asking you for is a shot at it."

"I guess it's important," Buffer said.

"I wouldn't risk your cover otherwise," Cap said.

Buffer nodded. "Yeah," he said. "Well, look, if we're doing this let's do it." The two stood and threaded toward the bar. Buffer stepped up behind Dun Weir. "Dun, boy."

Weir tensed, slowly turned his head. "Damn me," Weir said, pulling the newcomer into a backslapping embrace. "Long time, Buffer, long time."

"Too long," Buffer said. "Let me refresh your drink."

"I'd be honored," Weir said. "Who's this?"

"New recruit," Buffer said, indicating the man behind him. "Just call him Cap."

"Cap," Weir said. "Call me Dun."

Cap extended a hand and shook Weir's hand. "A pleasure, sir."

"So polite," Weir said. "By recruit . . ."

"I mean recruit," Buffer said.

"Glad to have you aboard," Weir said. "Let's get a seat somewhere quiet."

The three men left the bar through a back door, Weir nodding to the tender as they did so. "I heard you need a new man for this thing coming up," Buffer said.

"I figured that's why you were here," Weir said. "Put the call out two weeks ago, not getting much response. Glad to have you aboard."

"Heats on me, man," Buffer said, seating himself, reaching into his jacket for a cigar. "I got to lay low for a while. I think Cap here would work for you."

"He's from your section?" Weir asked.

"Yeah," Buffer said. "Pretty new, but he's shown promise." He grinned, slapped Cap on the back.

Weir nodded. "Heats on you. Well, it's attitude like that . . . but, yeah, sure, glad to have you aboard, Cap."

"So, this new operation," Buffer said.

"Top secret," Weir said. "You get nothing unless you're in. Suffice it to say we're gonna stick it to the Jedi but good this time. Family and Future is about to hit the big time."

"Control know about this?" Buffer said. "Last time I tried to get anything heavy together they said we were still a legislative body, not a terrorist organization."

"Control knows what they need to know," Weir said. He grinned. "I tell you, take a chance and join up on this one. We'll be the next generation's heroes."

"I hope that doesn't mean we'll be dead," Cap said.

Weir laughed. "We'll see." He crossed his legs and leaned back in his chair. "Yes, sir," he said, pointing at Cap. "You're in the right place now, boy."

Ran Keltar squinted back at Weir and the last two weeks went by in a blur before his eyes, a jumbled flash of images.

Silvan Xerton bolting down a flight of stairs, Dan Mytral bracketing him with a stun blast, the loose limbed way he'd tumbled like every joint in his body had turned to water. A description across the wire to match Xerton's description of the man who'd hired him, the same description given by the child's father: Red hair, shoulder length, a scar on his upper lip, blue eyes.

Van Spicer's flat eyes slapping a no across space to him. The plan was foolhardy, needlessly risky. Dan Mytral shaking his head; "How'd cowards like that get to be on the council?" Enk Loswell, feeling feisty; "By being cowards."

The Council's no ringing in his ears, sprinting for a shuttle, Loswell running behind him. Mytral waving from the tarmac. Buffer's face on the holocam; the surprise on his face at being activated, a sleeper agent inside Family and Future for over two years, keeping the Jedi informed but never being asked to do more. Being asked now to help insert another agent, Keltar himself.

It was a risky plan, Keltar told himself, finally admitted to himself now that he was in it chest deep and no way out but forward. But it had been the only way, Keltar reminded himself, in the belly of the beast. Xerton had dropped the red haired man and the child in town. From there, it was a short walk to one of two spaceports, each with a good dozen flights leaving that afternoon to planets scattered across the galaxy. The trail ended at the spaceport; the red haired man could have gone anywhere, been anywhere in the galaxy with two flight changes.

So Family and Future had been the lead. And it had been a good one. Ran Keltar squinted at Dun Meir, at the red haired man with blue eyes and scar on his upper lip, at the man talking about something new for Family and Future, some new plan that would hurt the Jedi like they hadn't been heart before. A man saying, "You're in the right place now."

Buffer smacked Keltar on the shoulder, met his eyes. "I hope so. Because I'm out of here tonight. I leave you in Dun's hands."

Ran Keltar smirked and nodded. "Don't worry about it. I think this is the right place for me. I do believe it. I do believe it."

Seems like Keltar is going to be in deeper than he thought. It just started with picking up a child thinking now is this going to turn into a very deep under cover mission?
hope you post

I'm hoping the same thing. tongue

Almost sounds like dissent in the ranks. thinking I like seeing Keltar being called "boy" - somehow I doubt he'd take that in a normal setting. Also loved the dialogue in general, as always. But if Keltar's in deep with Family and Future, where's Enk?!
