Dun Weir directed Keltar to a seat. "Take that one. We'll be getting out of here soon as we get clearance from flight control."

Keltar slumped in the co-pilot seat, propped his feet up. He burned to ask questions, worried about being too much. Finally, he settled on a non-committal, "So, cutting edge?"

Weir was pouring a drink from a flask. He raised the flask to Keltar; Keltar waved it away. "You bet," Weir said. He smirked, capped the flask, paused over the glass for an instant then drained it. "I think Family and Future is finally going to kick things up a bit."

"Legislation is a slow battle," Keltar said.

"You got that right," Weir said. "And the Jedi have far too many friends in high places. And what with those fragging mind control tricks, well, let's just say, the legal way may not be the best way."

Keltar furrowed his brow. "You think they're controlling the Senate?"

"It'd be easy, wouldn't it?" Weir said. "Think about a Jedi with no ethical compunctions. Just think about that."

Keltar nodded. "I suppose they could do it." His stomach was tight, angry. His eyes, he kept thoughtful, agreeable.

"You see it? You see the Jedi with no ethics, no morality?" Weir said.

Keltar nodded. "Yeah."

"Well, that's the real Jedi. That's the ones up there in their kriffing tower on Coruscant. You think they care? Up there with their own special religious status. Religion has no place in government and these people are dangerous," Weir said, warming to his subject. "Hell, preaching to the choir," he said with a laugh.

Keltar laughed as well. "Yeah," he said.

"What we've got to do is make the people realize that, realize that the Jedi don't care about them. Public opinion; even the Jedi can't control every mind on Coruscant," Weir said.

"Just the weak minded," Keltar said. "Which is the Senate, right?"

Weir replied, "Yeah, no fan of the Senate either."

"So, by hurt the Jedi . . ." Keltar floundered. "Through public opinion?"

"Get at their dark heart," Weir said. "They take kids from their parents and the things that happens to those kids . . ."

Keltar squinted. "What kind of things?"

"You know," Weir said. He met Keltar's gaze. "You're a Jedi."

Keltar felt his heart drop into his stomach; it was a sensation often spoken of, but he'd never felt it before. Now that he was feeling it, he understood how accurate the phrase was. He forced his face to stay as stone, forced his lips to part a hair, "What?"

"Were, I mean," Weir said. "Right? I can spot it a mile off. You were a Jedi once. You'd be surprised how many FFers were. Or maybe not. I think anyone with a conscience can only spend so much time in the Jedi mindset before common sense and morals kick in and you have to get out. How long were you in?"

Keltar spoke, "A long time."

"You don't remember your parents," Weir said. Not a question.

"No," Keltar said.

"And that makes you angry," Weir said. "Of course it does. They don't have the right. Everyone should know their own parents. They took . . . they took love away from us."

Keltar raised a hand to his mouth. "Us."

"I was twenty-five when I left," Weir said. "Shunted into the AgriCorps at thirteen. I still thought I was really doing something for a while. But then it dawned on me; it was the caste system. Those with lots of power were Jedi; those with less were gardeners, mechanics. And those with none . . ."

"We don't talk about them," Keltar said, something inside him clicking into an absolute stillness.

"They're nothing," Weir said. "Faceless crowd. If you don't have the Force . . ."

"You have nothing," Keltar said. A voice inside his head spoke, a high keening soprano, a girl's voice.

Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.

"You touched the Force lately?" Weir said.

"Not in years," Keltar said.

"I still do on occasion," Weir said. "You know, it's funny. I work every day to bring the Jedi down. You'd think their God would be angry with me. But when I touch the Force . . ." Weir paused. "I see the lie. They don't have a monopoly on the Force. Try it. Try to touch it."

Keltar shook his head. "I've left that behind."

"You're afraid," Weir said. "I understand that. They taught you to be. They taught you that they controlled the Force, not the other way. But you can still touch it." His eyes were burning with a barely hidden passion. "Reach out. It's there. Touch it."

Keltar was silent in his seat, fear in his eyes, in his heart. Weir set his glass down with a quiet clink. "They lied to you about it. The Force is . . . Love. And it will not reject you."

He stepped close to Keltar, a hand outstretched, Keltar tensed. When that hand touched him . . . he didn't know . . .

The commlink crackled. "You are clear for takeoff."

Weir stepped back, his blue eyes dimming, the moment past. He didn't speak as he slid into the pilot's seat. The two men didn't speak, in fact, for several hours.

But inside Keltar's head, a voice was whispering, a screeching, mocking whisper that did not quiet during the hours in hyperspace.

nothing

Nicely done! applause And rather unsettling that Weir's words are ringing in Keltar's head. Does he sense some truth in them? It's very interesting to see the Jedi through the eyes of one who feels in a way betrayed by them, one who wasn't 'allowed' to grasp the full 'power.'

I loved the moment when Weir first called Keltar a Jedi. *My* stomach dropped out. tongue

Enk Loswell walked out of the Council room, his feet beating a slow tempo on the stone floor, his mind pounding in time, beating against the walls of his skull. Talking to the Council was never his favorite thing to do; today, it had been like being ripped apart by wild animals, a bite at a time.

Loswell was trying to clear his head when he saw Master Tomack and his padawan round the corner in front of him. Enk was just off his game enough to let his feelings show; he paused for a half a second, thinking about dashing in the other direction. "Padawan," Tomack said. "A moment of your time?"

"Master," Enk said.

"What's the good word?" Tomack said.

"The 'good' word?" Enk said. "There isn't one."

"Oh, well, then just give me the word in general," Tomack said. "Where's your master at now?"

"I don't know," Enk said.

"Oh, stuff the solidarity," Tomack said. "It's me. I don't care what you tell or don't tell the Council, but . . ."

"I really don't," Enk said. "He left me on Sylvestrin to see if we could get anywhere with the pilot. That dead ended right quick and the Council was screaming for me to come back."

"So you did," Tomack said. "Your master would be proud of you."

Tomack's Padawan, Vivistec, might have smirked. Enk shot him a look of death. Tomack pretended not to notice. "So, he's off with the . . ."

"Look," Enk said. "I just told all this to the Council. I've got rather a large headache at the moment, so . . ."

Tomack continued without a breath, "Inside man in Family and Future. Or one of them, anyway. And you haven't heard from him."

"Not for two weeks," Enk said. "By now he could be anywhere, so if you'll excuse me."

Tomack nodded slowly. "Your master's quite a piece of work. Padawan, I've got to dash in and speak to the Council on a matter. Why don't you accompany Padawan Loswell back to his room?"

Thanks but no thanks, Enk thought. He forced a smile, less than Vivistec did. Tomack clapped Vivistec on the shoulder and took off at a jog. "Late, as usual."

The two padawans fell in next to each other, strolling down the hall. They stayed locked in an uneasy silence for a long time. "Your master," Vivstec finally said, "He goes his own way, doesn't he?"

Enk nodded. "He does that."

"The Council hates him, I think," Vivistec said. "Most of the other Jedi as well. He's . . ."

"I don't think that's true," Enk snapped.

"Oh, well, I just think that when someone bends the rules as much as he does that he's probably not going . . ."

"I have a headache, frankly, so if you don't mind, I'd rather walk in silence," Enk said.

Vivistec nodded. "Sure," he said, but in his smirk and in his eyes, Enk read the gist of his message anyway.

Enk Loswell had to admit, his master wasn't the best Jedi by a stretch. Given to taking too much alcohol, though he'd rather eased back on that the last couple of years. One thing he hadn't eased back on were the one night stands; it was something the Council seemed to turn a disapproving eye too, if one could disapprove of something one was pretending wasn't there. But it was 'attachment' that was forbidden and Enk knew many other Jedi had done the same things before. It was Keltar's temper, however, that caused him the most problems, Enk thought. He remembered the time he had . . .

Enk shook his head. Vivistec had done it; turned him against his own master, at least in the space inside his own head. No more of that. Keltar was a master, a friend, a brother, a father. The Council hadn't figured it all out, Enk thought, to think that they could end 'attachment' by giving one communal robes, taking one's posessions and breaking up marriages. In the bond of the Master and the Padawan, Enk realized suddenly, was every love known to the universe.

His name was Ran Keltar. He was afraid. The room he was in was dark. The room was big and cold. He pulled his small blanket around him tighter and shivered. The blanket was coarse, scratched his face in the dark.

He breathed slowly, tried to concentrate on sleep. He needed rest to face the stress of his life now. He closed his eyes and began to breathe in a slow rhythm that he hoped would lull him to sleep. He felt a shadow fall across his face, felt his heart pick up in a quicker beat of utter terror. He opened his eyes. Nothing.

He closed his eyes again, began to breath slowly and quietly.

When the pillowcase went over his head, when the hand clapped on his mouth, he would swear later, remembering, that his heart had quite literally stopped for at least five seconds.

The blows came in a rain, pillowcases with boots in them, slamming into his body in a rapid rhythm of stops and starts. He tried to cry out past the hand over his mouth, reached for the Force, tried to push, awkwardly. The Force came back against him, slammed into him like a wall, took his breath, constricted around his throat, shut off his life for a brief second.

Then there was quiet laughter, feet running. Keltar whipped the pillowcase off his head, rubbed at the hot tears on his cheeks. The barracks was quiet and still; around him his fellow classmates were in their beds, utterly still. There was a snicker down the row somewhere; someone whispered, "Shut up" and then they snickered again.

His name was Ran Keltar. He was seven years old. It was his first month in this barracks of the Jedi Temple, finally promoted from the six and under barracks. He was not popular. It was the third time this week he had been attacked in the night.

Ran Keltar rolled over in his bed, listened to the sound of hyperspace rushing by. Dun Weir would be in the cockpit, piloting the ship to its rendevouz with the rest of his group. With the rest of his group, Keltar knew, he would find the secret of Weir's new plan to hurt the Jedi. And, he hoped, he would find a kidnapped child, a missing baby.

Ran Keltar remembered his first month in the older students barracks, remembered the fear, remembered the pain. He remembered Dun Weir's words about the Jedi, remembered the things he had called them, remembered the hate in Weir's eyes.

Ran Keltar rolled over and tried to sleep. His name was Ran Keltar. He was afraid.

Superb chapter! I loved this section in particular:

The blows came in a rain, pillowcases with boots in them, slamming into his body in a rapid rhythm of stops and starts. He tried to cry out past the hand over his mouth, reached for the Force, tried to push, awkwardly. The Force came back against him, slammed into him like a wall, took his breath, constricted around his throat, shut off his life for a brief second.

Keltar drained his glass at a single gulp. “Whoa, slow down there, Cap,” Weir said. “All things in moderation.”

“Including hatred of the Jedi?” Keltar said.

“Well, most things,” Weir said.

A hand clapped on Weir’s shoulder and a large, heavyset man with a goatee and long gray hair tied back in a ponytail dropped into a seat next to Weir. “Boss, what’s going on?”

“Not a whole hell of a lot,” Weir said. “At least not on my end. You’re the one supposed to be doing the work.”

The large man laughed. “Me and those other two useless fools you stuck me with. It’s a full time job just keeping those two under check.”

Weir grinned. “Okay, we’ll go get them back in shape here shortly. This is our new man, Cap. Cap, I’d like you to meet a fellow goes by the name of Gibber.”

Keltar extended a hand. “Nice to know you.”

Gibber took the offered hand in a grip of pure steel. “Same to you.”

“So, you’re the one responsible for most of the work in this new plan?” Keltar said.

“Well, I suppose,” Gibber said. “But not the planning. That’s all on Dun here. Dun’s the visionary.”

“Not what the big bosses call me,” Weir said.

“They’ll catch on,” Gibber said. “Once this plan goes through, they’ll recognize you for the genius you are.”

“I hope so,” Weir said.

“This sounds better and better,” Keltar said. “Any chance I can find out what this big plan is before I’m actually implicated in carrying it out?”

Weir laughed. “Sue me for being a drama queen. I like to keep things under wraps.”

Gibber said, “Suffice it to say that it involves the Jedi’s most heinous crime against humanity.”

“Their fashion sense?” Keltar deadpanned.

Weir said, “No. What we were talking about earlier. The way they steal children. I’m holding back the details, but what would you say if I said we were considering stealing some of them back?”

Keltar’s pulse leapt. His face remained calm. “I’d say that sounds like poetic justice.”

“Then you’re in the right place,” Weir said. He downed his own drink. “More or shall we go meet the rest of our team?”

“I’m ready to move,” Keltar said.

“Good man,” Weir said. “I should warn you though. They’re a bit off the beam.”

“Then I’m in the right place,” Keltar said.

“Yes, indeed,” Weir said. “Yes indeed.
