His lucidity was all too brief, weariness once again wrapping him in its arms as the outside faded away. He would later wonder why his tormentor's words had elicited such a warm feeling of contentment in his belly.
Perhaps Qui-Gon's words, or the man himself, gives Xan a sense of feeling safe. Maybe unconciously he knows that as long as his former mentor is there, nothing bad will happen to him. Just a thought. 
I couldn't help smiling when I saw this was updated!

and become a jedi to prove Dooku wrong.

Loved that Xan is being ministered to by Qui-Gon and that Xan was annoyed by the buzzing of his voice.
“Xan? Can you hear me?” A loud sigh followed before the offensive hands moved on to include his arms in their machinations. “I sense that you are merely being your usual stubborn self. If this is nothing more than a plot to punish me than you have far exceeded your expectations.”
A light brush of something feather light against his cheek. “Not that I don’t deserve it. I failed you, Padawan. And on so many levels.”
Offensive hands that brushed his cheek in love and regret.
Great job. Looking forward to seeing Xan waking up.

Finally Qui-Gon has come to his senses and now he will badger Xan until he wakes up. 
Xan will probably wake up just to spite Qui-Gon, and
tell him to be quiet.

I can only hope that Xanatos will have some sense and not be going back to Dooku.
“I am not going to stop badgering you until I get what I want so you might as well just give in. I will come everyday and subject you to these exercises so your muscles don‘t atrophy. That of course will also require you to suffer my presence.”

Hi, I'm pretty new to the Star Wars fandom and I've been looking all over this forum for good fics. I just have to say I really love this fic. It's really good and I love how you take things slowly and don't rush it. Everything seems very planned out. I'm currently reading the JA books for the first time and it's nice to see Xanatos in a different light. Dooku is sooo deliciously evil in this too and it makes me dislike him even more. Also I wanted to say that it seems weird to have Obi-Wan in a fic but not really saying anything ^_^. I'm a Obi fan so I usually read things that are Obi-centered. Anyway, I can't wait till the next chapter for this. Could you put me on your PM list as well? Thank you.

It's all Magier's fault getting me interested in Xanatos as a character   (which I NEVER was before)!
And obviously Itachi-Uchiha is part of the whole conspiracy with this beautifully crafted tale. Urggh!
The theme of isolation, and lonely struggle with one's weakness is so well handled here. Love the portrayal of Xanatos as intelligent and honest enough to recognise how he had alienated those whom he loved and looked to for help. Love even more the movements toward forgiveness in the most recent posts.

Great observation! Although we both know that Xan would never admit that out loud.

The JA books have always angered me for that reason. I never felt that Qui admitted that he could have played some role, even a small one, in the way Xan turned out. Now I can put my own spin on it.

Me too! The majority of my other fics are Obi/Xan centric so this is fairly new ground for me as well. Obi makes his presence known throughout this one so never fear. Thanks for reading.

Chapter Twenty-Three: Tough Love
The two young boys had returned and were engaged in an animated discussion about their last light saber class. He would never admit it to anyone, least of all them, but he found their presence to be soothing. Their childish voices had the ability to banish the Sithly whispers of his constant tormentors, enough so that he was more-or-less alert although he had as yet refused to verbally communicate with anyone. He either sat up or laid in the bed and stared unseeingly at whatever happened to be in his line of vision at the time.
He knew his healer and former master were beyond frustrated with his lack of progress but he felt a need to remain guarded. They couldn’t help him to unravel the reason behind the deluge of failings that seemed to be plaguing him these days. Only he could uncover the reason behind the seemingly increasing decay of honor and morality he was displaying.
"Knight Drallig says I should focus on mastering Ataru."
"Makes sense. As small as you are the aerials are a good fit."
"I won’t always be small."
"Face it Obi, you are always going to be…Average when it comes to your size."
There was a beat of silence before the younger boy thought of a fitting comeback.
"How do you know you won’t stop growing and be no bigger than me?"
A snort of laughter. "I’m Kiffar. We grow tall."
He could feel waves of frustration and annoyance radiating from young Kenobi seconds before he felt the boy’s odd colored eyes settle on his face. Obi-Wan was leery of him and in some ways a bit frightened and yet he braved coming here in order to support his friend. The boy would one day be a model Jedi.
"What form you do think he uses?"
A bark of laughter caught in his throat before it could escape, Obi-Wan’s question spoken with such open and honest suspicion. Insolent imp, he thought to himself.
"I’ve never actually seen him fight but I was told that he is very skilled in Form V."
"I would have guessed Dun möch," young Kenobi sniffed with disapproval.
The Sith specters in his head stirred as a strong current of anger flared around young Quinlan. "I’ve told you he isn’t a bad man. Take it back!"
Any enjoyment he had been experiencing from the boys visit vanished instantly. He wanted to stand up and howl with rage. To warn young Vos to listen to his friend and stay far away before he was inadvertently tainted while being around one as scarred as him. Instead he shut out the sound of their childish voices and concentrated on the traffic he could see through the tinted window in his room.
He ignored the deep voice that suddenly drowned out the two youngsters, pretended not to feel the piercing eyes that bored through him as the boys were ordered back to class. Unfortunately patience had never been one of his strengths and the silence in the room had him shifting uncomfortably on the bed. It was driving him crazy not knowing what the Jedi Master was doing but in order to find out he would be forced to turn his head and thus give himself away.
"I’ve been coddling you, Xan and thus doing you a grave disservice. Today we shall change that."
The puzzling words sent a jolt of uneasiness through him and had his body stiffening. He didn’t have long to wait before Jinn’s words became clear, an involuntary gasp spilling from his lips as strong arms pulled him to the edge of the bed before draping his body over a broad shoulder. While his mind was busy scrambling for a possible reason behind the Jedi Master’s actions, his former mentor turned and strode from the room carrying him as if he weighed no more than a new born.
Stunned didn’t begin to describe what he was feeling as he was helpless to do anything but hang there and watch the polished floor as he was transported through busy hallways. He was painfully aware of the startled glances sent their direction and of the hushed whispers that followed their progress through the Temple. Stubbornness kept him from demanding that Jinn put him down, anger slowly building as their destination became clear.
The clash of ‘sabers filled his ears as Jinn strode into the training salle without hesitation. If it had been anyone but himself in the predicament, he would have howled with jeering laughter to see Qui-Gon Jinn sailing into the room as if it were common practice to have a body slung over his shoulder when he arrived to spar. The usually noisy room was suddenly as silent as a tomb as Jinn carried him toward the row of chairs set up for spectators.
Large calloused hands placed him in one of the chairs with surprising gentleness, Jinn squatting down next to him. While one hand kept a tight hold on his arm in order to hold his body in place, the other firmly grasped his chin and forced his head up. He had no choice but to brave the score of faces that stared at him with a mixture of pity and curiosity. It was difficult to keep his face expressionless while being scrutinized by so many familiar faces.
"I intend to bring you here every day so that you may see what you are missing out on." Qui-Gon’s words were spoken in a low enough voice so that no one could overhear. "You forget that I know you better than anyone, Xan. You are one of the strongest, most resilient and certainly the most hard headed person I’ve had the pleasure to meet. You will not let this beat you. I won’t let you give up on yourself."
He could feel his face heat with shame, anger quickly rising and threatening to choke him. Even after everything they had been through together, he never would have imagined Jinn to be capable of such cruelty. Determination filled him, warriors instincts kicking in as he prepared himself to battle the man next to him.
He was oblivious to the solemn smile that twisted Qui-Gon’s lips when the Jedi master saw the sudden spark of life that lit his deep blue eyes.

So much for hiding with in himself and watching life pass him by.
It is time for Qui Gon to take control of the problem
he help create with xan.
Now a battle of wills can start and Xan will be able to move on
to become a Knight
"spark of life that lit his deep blue eyes."
That spark was the acceptance of a challenge
Time
for Xan's ego to kicking in,
except the challenge
then surprise the counsel with succeeding.
Great story! Great update..
obi wan feelings for xan, are they jealously or caution??

Wow. Xanatos draped over Qui-Gon's shoulder -- an image to conjure with. He is one stubborn braddah if he can keep a straight face through that!
Xan is feeling dismay and remorse at things he has done wrong. If someone could tell him that those feelings are proof positive of his own goodness, perhaps that would give him the faith to overcome his fears that he is forever stained. In the mean time, a nice battle of wills with his old Master -- who has forgiven him and loves him still -- is a nice diversion, one that will yet plant the seeds and train the strength for Xan's salvation. (Not to mention afford us readers lots of delicious angst and mush...) Nice one!
Qui-Gon is a wonderful 'Hound of Heaven', and I love the exchanges between Quinlan and Ob-Wan, too.

I don't think Xan realizes that Qui-Gon just succeeded in his quest to make him come out of hiding.
I too liked the scene with Quin and Obi-Wan. Also liked that Xan's thoughts toward Obi were somewhat on the affectionate side, meaning that they could probably be friends if circumstances were different. Xan seems to feel for Quin, especially when the boy becomes angry and tries to defend him and yet Xan knows where anger like that can get a person.
This fic is a very enjoyable read!
