Title:
The Best of Intentions
Author:
jedidas3
Characters:
Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, OC Jedi
Timeframe:
JA,AU
Notes:
This is the sequel to "The Truth Shall Set You Free".
Part 1
The Jedi master awoke from his peaceful slumber, silently berating himself for sleeping while he was supposed to be keeping watch over Obi-Wan. Qui-Gon Jinn glanced at his chronometer to see how long he had actually been asleep. Satisfied that he had not left his padawan unattended too long, the large Jedi sat back in his chair to observe his charge.
Obi-Wan was still sleeping, although he was beginning to toss and turn, indicating that the teen’s few hours of tranquility were about to come to an end. Qui-Gon had hoped that his padawan could have enjoyed one more day of simply being his apprentice. However, the Jedi knew it was not to be.
Leaning forward, Qui-Gon Jinn tentatively placed his hand on Obi-Wan’s brow and cheek to discover that the youth felt feverish. The Jedi smiled as Obi-Wan seemed to be drawn towards his touch. Perhaps it was the fever, but Qui-Gon preferred to believe that the teen’s desire for a comforting touch stemmed from the trust that was beginning to develop between master and apprentice.
“Shh…it’s all right, Obi-Wan,” the Jedi whispered. Knowing his padawan’s need for assurance, Qui-Gon continued speaking in a soft, yet confident tone. “I’m right here, my padawan.”
Qui-Gon watched as his apprentice’s eyes fluttered open and glanced about the dimly lit room, finally coming to rest on his master. Obi-Wan smiled weakly at his master as memories of the previous day played through his mind.
“It wasn’t a dream. I was so afraid that I would wake up and it would all be a dream.”
Returning the boy’s smile, Qui-Gon carefully placed Obi-Wan’s braid across his shoulder and replied, “It wasn’t a dream, my padawan. I promise you that much.”
“I know that now,” Obi-Wan said. “I guess it still doesn’t seem real. So many times I would wake up and hope that my life was just a dream.”
“You don’t have to worry about that any more,” the Jedi reminded the youth. “Right now, what we need to concentrate on is getting you through the next few days.”
“It’s not going to be fun.”
“Everything will be all right,” assured the Jedi. “I will be right here with you.”
“I really don’t want you to see me like that.” Obi-Wan averted his eyes in embarrassment, recalling how sick he had been when he had previously experienced the symptoms of withdrawal.
“Obi-Wan, when I asked you to be my padawan learner, it wasn’t conditional. I didn’t say that you would only be my padawan on the good days. I intend to be by your side on the bad days as well as the good days. I will help you through this. Do you understand what I’m saying?”
The Jedi master patiently waited for Obi-Wan to acknowledge his heartfelt words. Qui-Gon knew that it would be a very long time before Obi-Wan would fully trust anybody including himself, so he was satisfied when the youth provided him with a slight nod.
“I understand. I just hope you know what you’re getting into.”
“I do,” answered Qui-Gon. “Now, do you feel like you could eat a little something?”
He could tell by the expression on Obi-Wan’s pale face that food was the last thing he wanted. The teen pulled the covers up around him and turned on his side, pulling his knees up into a fetal position.
“No, thank you. I don’t think my stomach could handle it.”
“You’re running a fever and experiencing nausea already. I need to inform Master Healer Nathe. Will you be all right for a minute?”
“I’m fine,” Obi-Wan tiredly replied. “This is the easy part.”
“I’ll be right back.”
“Take your time. I’m not going anywhere.” Obi-Wan’s eyes remained focused on his master as the Jedi rose from his seat and made his way towards the door. Hesitating slightly, Qui-Gon glanced over his shoulder and smiled at the young man.
“I won’t be long.” Qui-Gon palmed open the door and stepped outside. As soon as the door closed, the Jedi leaned heavily against the wall and closed his eyes.
~Force, let me help this boy. You wanted us together, now you must guide us.~
Sensing an unfamiliar presence hovering nearby, Qui-Gon opened his eyes. Pushing himself away from the wall, the Jedi master approached the yet unidentified stranger.
“May I help you?” inquired the Jedi.
“I’m sorry if I’ve intruded Master Jinn, but I couldn’t help but observe that you seemed to be deeply worried about something or someone.”
“I’m afraid you have me at a disadvantage, since you apparently know who I am and I don’t know your name.”
“Forgive me, Master Jinn.” The hidden figure stepped forward slightly and removed her hood. “My name is Master Healer Miranda Ru’tan. I am a soul healer.”
“The Council didn’t waste any time, did they?”
The healer’s green eyes sparkled as she tucked her long auburn hair behind her ears. “No, they didn’t. They provided me with your file as well as Padawan Kenobi’s file, as well as a warning about you.”
“What exactly did they say, Healer Ru’tan?” Qui-Gon did not bother to hide his irritation with both the Council and the healer.
“They said that as soon as I informed you of who I was, you would immediately become defensive.”
Qui-Gon forcibly relaxed his stoic features, slowly exhaling as he attempted to tamp down the frustration that he was feeling.
“Forgive me Master Ru’tan, if it seemed that way. I just assumed the Council would have waited a few days until Obi-Wan had time to recover from the withdrawal.”
“They thought that I may be able to help during the withdrawal period. From what I’ve learned about Sematex, the effects of the withdrawal not only take their toll physically, but mentally as well.”
“I appreciate your willingness to help, but I don’t believe that Obi-Wan would be entirely comfortable with your presence. He’s going to be very sick and I don’t think he wants too many people around.”
“Master Jinn, I’m not trying to intrude upon Padawan Kenobi’s privacy. However, I believe that I can help him, especially when the hallucinations begin. He may be seeing things or recalling things that neither one of you can handle.”
The soul healer could see that the forced relaxation of earlier was no longer evident as Qui-Gon seemed to bristle as her reasoning. In studying the Jedi master’s file, Miranda knew that he was very passionate about his beliefs. Qui-Gon Jinn was also very devoted to his friends and especially his padawans.
He had seen one padawan successfully become a knight, while his second apprentice had betrayed the Jedi master. After Xanatos, Master Jinn had distanced himself from the Temple, maintaining contact with the Council and a few close friends. Sometimes it would be months at a time before he returned from back-to-back missions.
The Jedi master had been at the Temple on one of these brief respites when his path crossed with the path of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Now, just a few days later, Qui-Gon Jinn had a new padawan learner and was demonstrating the same level of devotion that came to be expected of the Jedi master.
Healer Ru’tan did not dispute the loyalty that Qui-Gon felt towards his apprentice, but was surprised at the intensity of it, so early in their master/padawan relationship. Her eyes remained fixed on the Jedi as he struggled to maintain his composure.
When he spoke, Qui-Gon’s voice was tight and controlled. “I fully understand what to expect thanks to Master Nathe. I know that the Council has mandated that both Obi-Wan and I seek counseling, but now is not the time. Once my padawan has physically recovered, we will seek you out.”
“I’m afraid it doesn’t work that way,” Miranda replied. “The well-being of the mind can either help or hinder Obi-Wan’s physical recovery. I am not your enemy, Master Jinn. I’m here to help Padawan Kenobi and you as well.”
While waiting for the Jedi master’s rebuttal, Miranda and Qui-Gon found themselves in the company of Master Healer Nathe.
“I see the two of you have met and the Temple walls are still standing,” Nathe said as he addressed the two stubborn Jedi.
“Yes, we have,” answered Healer Ru’tan. “We were just discussing the necessity of me being nearby during the withdrawal period that Padawan Kenobi will be going through.”
Imagining the verbal sparring match between Qui-Gon and Miranda, Nathe nodded as he turned to address the Jedi master. “Qui-Gon, I was coming to talk to you about Master Ru’tan helping us out for the next few days. Miranda is very good at what she does and I assure you that she has Obi-Wan’s best interests in mind.”
“I do not question her abilities, just her timing,” Qui-Gon replied. “However, I will trust your judgment, Master Nathe.”
“Thank you, Qui-Gon. Since we have that settled, tell me how our patient is doing this morning.”
“I was on my way to inform you about his condition when I met Healer Ru’tan. Obi-Wan is running a fever and is nauseous. I couldn’t get him to eat anything,” the Jedi master said.
“Well, let’s go and see Obi-Wan, shall we?” Nathe motioned for Qui-Gon and Miranda to follow him into the teen’s room.
The trio quietly entered, studying the shivering form under the covers. Each master wanted to help Obi-Wan; each considered what they could do to ease the youth’s suffering. The two healers and the Jedi exchanged worried glances, knowing that the road that they were all about to travel was going to be extremely difficult.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jedi Master Plo Koon paced in front of the couch in his private chamber. His irritation was evident in his long strides as he chose not to release his anger to the Force. At the moment, he had decided that he would indulge his feelings of wrath as he thought about the events of the past few days.
He was scheduled to appear before the Council tomorrow and answer for what he had done. In Plo Koon’s mind, he had done nothing but try and help the Jedi Order.
“They don’t realize what they are doing. That little green troll refuses to see what is right in front of him. I can’t believe that they are allowing that…boy to continue his training. It’s not right!”
Plo Koon stopped in mid stride and forced himself to find his center. If he was going to retain his position within the Jedi Order, he was going to have to come up with a better course of action than ranting in his quarters. He had already spoken with his former padawan, Knight Griddon, and had provided him with a plan to discredit Obi-Wan Kenobi.
“Perhaps, the best thing I can do is sit back and wait. Padawan Kenobi is bound to mess up sooner or later and then everyone will see him for what he truly is. Yes, I think that’s what I’ll do.”
Plo Koon sat down on his couch and smiled at the thought of what the future held for Obi-Wan Kenobi. The teen’s life would not be an easy one; he would make sure of that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In another place, darkness was also making plans for Obi-Wan Kenobi. A shrouded figure looked across the skyline towards the Jedi Temple. The Temple itself was a magnificent structure, projecting a sense of nobility and peace. The Jedi could always feel safe within the hallowed walls of the Temple. However, this would not be the case for Padawan Kenobi.
The young man would be given a chance to recover from his illness, but after that, the battle for Obi-Wan’s soul would begin. It was foolish of the padawan to think that he could escape the memories of his past and become a Jedi Knight. He had too many ghosts to fight and not just his own. The teen would also have to contend with the past of Qui-Gon Jinn as well.
The dark figure smiled. There was nothing like using the past to drive a wedge in the future. The Temple would not be a place of safety for Obi-Wan Kenobi. It would be the place of his demise…

I love that - looking for the Force for guidance.
Great job, once again.
Edited to add: you are picking up right from the end of the other story - I wondered if it would be set ahead a few months - NOT! So we get to see some lovely mush as Qui takes care of Obi during his withdrawal-or will Obi be kidnapped or something?
Hallucinations, too - boy, he'll think Qui is as bad as Elad, maybe?
The possibilities are endless.

Great job, Padawan. I'm glad to see you back and writing again! Loved the dynamics of Obi and Qui.
I especially liked this.

Very good first post - loved it.
Loved to see Qui-Gon being so protective of Obi-Wan.
Somehow I've got the feeling Obi-Wan is going to need that soon
Bad Ploo Koon for thinking like that!

Thanks for the PM.
Your writing is brilliant, and I am so looking forward to reading another excellent story from you.

Why do these Jedi sneak up on Qui-Gon, no wonder he doesn't trust them. Hiding in the shadows.

It's up! It's up! Woohoo!
Love the way you show the devotion and beginnings of trust between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan.
Can't help being suspicious of every new person that comes near Obi-Wan, even if they are recommended by an ally such as Healer Nathe!!!

That was so cute!
I'm glad that Qui-Gon is there to help Obi-Wan through the next few days.
The dark figure smiled. There was nothing like using the past to drive a wedge in the future. The Temple would not be a place of safety for Obi-Wan Kenobi. It would be the place of his demise…
I have a
very
bad feeling about this!
But I'm sure that on the other hand there will be a great story
can't wait for the next chapter!

Fantastic first chapter, jedidas! And what a cliffhanger (complete with the dot-dot-dot that usually signals doom music).
I'm on edge already!
“I see the two of you have met and the Temple walls are still standing,” Nathe said as he addressed the two stubborn Jedi.
That was perfect. I must admit, my first reaction to Miranda was suspicion. It seems like so many people have it out for Obi-Wan, but possibly she really does have his best interests at heart? I hope? Please?
Yay for the sequel! Keep it coming.

Wow! Cool opening chapter. I really like the character of Ru'tan, though we don't know her that well. I noticed that Qui-Gon's sparring with her is more of a fencing match, as opposed to Gui-Gon's initial sharper jousting with Nathe in the previous story. I look forward to the three of them working to help Obi-Wan.
Darn that Plu Koon! Are Mace and Yoda still ignorant even after exposing Elad and Letni! He should be expelled from the Order.

I really think this drug that Obi Wan is on is something our author has slipped into her chapters and we soak it up when we read the story and get hooked, begging her for more chapters, not knowing we're really begging for more of the drug....with that said...

Thank you so much!
Valairy_Scot:
Thank you so much!
you are picking up right from the end of the other story - I wondered if it would be set ahead a few months - NOT! So we get to see some lovely mush as Qui takes care of Obi during his withdrawal-or will Obi be kidnapped or something?
Lots of mush!
Hallucinations, too - boy, he'll think Qui is as bad as Elad, maybe?
Possibly...I think you may get a glimpse of this in the next chapter.
Good luck on Saturday!

Fantastic first chapter, jedidas! And what a cliffhanger (complete with the dot-dot-dot that usually signals doom music).
I am a music therapist, so I guess it's natural that doom music should occur.
Regarding Miranda, I think that you all will like her.
Thanks for reading. By the way, I'm running out of Hershey Bars!
brodiew:
Thanks! Miranda and Qui-Gon will be making peace with each other (as far as helping Obi-Wan.) I think that people will like this character...at least I hope so.
JediKaren:
How funny! Well, far be it from me to not give you a fix! Here's the next chapter!
Next post is up!
Part 2
Qui-Gon moved to Obi-Wan’s side and gently placed his large, calloused hand on the youth’s shoulder. He was amazed to find the amount of heat radiating from his padawan. The master looked over his own shoulder towards Master Nathe.
“He’s burning up. His fever wasn’t this high a few moments ago,” Qui-Gon stated.
Not wanting to relinquish the physical contact with his apprentice, Master Jinn shifted slightly to allow Nathe access to Obi-Wan. He closely followed the Master Healer’s movements as he reviewed the teen’s vital signs. Nathe leaned over the padawan and placed his hand on Obi-Wan’s forehead.
“Obi-Wan? Can you hear me? It’s Master Nathe. Are you in any pain?”
“No,” came the quiet reply. “Not yet, anyway. I feel like I’m going to be sick though.”
“I know.” Master Nathe made sure that a small waste receptacle was near the head of the young man’s bed.
“I’m c…cold,” Obi-Wan whispered to the healer.
“You’re working on quite a fever. I’m going to let Master Jinn stay with you while I step out and see if I can’t find something to make it a little easier for you.”
The healer stepped back as Obi-Wan nodded, trying to pull the blanket around him even tighter. Qui-Gon came back into the padawan’s line of sight as Master Nathe hastily left Obi-Wan’s room.
“I’m right here, Padawan. Can I get you anything?” Worry crept over Qui-Gon’s countenance as he waited for Obi-Wan to answer.
“Another blanket, please. I’m so cold.”
The Jedi master fetched another blanket and placed it over his padawan. Obi-Wan could feel the weight of another blanket being added to the bed. It seemed to help a little bit, but did not completely banish the chill from his body.
“It’s starting. It’s only going to get worse,” the padawan warned.
“I promise you that everything will work out. As soon as we make it through the next few days, things will look much better.”
“I hope so.”
Qui-Gon could tell that Obi-Wan’s reply was not laced with as much confidence as he had hoped for. Deciding that it was not the time to force the youth to explore his negativity, the Jedi smiled at his apprentice as he brushed his hand through Obi-Wan’s hair.
“It will,” Qui-Gon simply replied.
The Jedi master was focused so intently on his padawan learner that he nearly forgot Master Ru’tan was in the room. The sound of the healer clearing her throat as she stepped forward forced Qui-Gon to acknowledge her presence.
“Now is not the time,” warned the Jedi master.
“When is a good time, Master Jinn? If I am to help Padawan Kenobi, I would like for him to know who I am,” the soul healer said.
“As I said before…” Qui-Gon was interrupted by Obi-Wan’s weak voice.
“Master? What’s wrong?” As horrible as the boy felt, there was no doubt that his master was not happy. Obi-Wan had learned long ago that if his master was not content, then he would suffer the consequences. He quickly banished those thoughts from his mind as he searched the room for the cause of Qui-Gon’s distress.
“It is nothing for you to be concerned about,” assured the Jedi. “You need to rest, young one.”
“I can’t.” Obi-Wan countered. Tears threatened to flow as the apprentice raised his shaking hand to wipe at his eyes. It was then that he saw someone move with an uncommon grace to stand beside his master.
She certainly seemed friendly enough, but for some reason, Qui-Gon did not want her to be here. The question came to Obi-Wan as to why the Jedi master was so cold towards her. There were no obvious hints of maliciousness about her. Obi-Wan had deemed himself an expert in evaluating people who had evil intentions. He looked to Qui-Gon for guidance as the stranger spoke.
“Padawan Kenobi, my name is Master Healer Miranda Ru’tan. I’ve been asked by the Council to help you. I’m a soul healer.” Miranda ignored the harsh glare she was receiving from Master Jinn as she continued to observe the young man lying in the bed.
Most of what she had learned about Obi-Wan Kenobi had been told to her by the Council and Master Nathe. There had been very little information in his personal or medical file, due to the fact that the files had been erased.
She knew that Obi-Wan had been abused by his former master. Master Healer Nathe had provided her with the horrid details of the suffering that the teen had endured over a period of several years. The soul healer knew that the damage that had been inflicted did not stop on the physical level, but extended deep into the emotional and mental level.
Obi-Wan Kenobi’s body, mind, and spirit, had been completely ravaged until there had been very little left. It had taken the actions of several sadistic individuals to destroy the padawan, and it would take the actions of several caring individuals to restore him.
The soul healer realized that she would indeed face a challenge working with Padawan Kenobi and his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. However, Master Ru’tan also knew that the Force wanted her to help the padawan and the master, and she followed the Force with all her heart.
Refusing to wilt under the formidable stare of Qui-Gon Jinn, Miranda smiled warmly at the apprentice. “Your Master is right. You need to rest. I just want you to know that I’ll be checking in on you during the next few days, just in case you need me. Will that be all right with you?”
“I guess so. I…don’t know.” Obi-Wan wasn’t completely sure of how he should answer the soul healer. It was clear to him that Qui-Gon did not appreciate her making her presence known to the youth. He knew that his master was trying to protect him and for that he was grateful. The teen was aware that he would have to see a soul healer, but the youth was not prepared to unleash the demons that he could barely keep at bay.
“I don’t think I’ll feel like talking very much,” Obi-Wan confessed, hoping that he was saying the right thing.
“You don’t have to. I just want you to know that I am here
when
you need me. It was a pleasure to meet you, Padawan Kenobi.” The healer smiled once again at the apprentice and stepped back behind Qui-Gon.
The Jedi master moved slightly to obscure Miranda’s view of his apprentice. “Why don’t you try and get some rest? I’m going to walk Healer Ru’tan out.”
Qui-Gon watched Obi-Wan as the youth closed his eyes. The Jedi made sure that the blankets were tucked around the still trembling form of his padawan. Standing to his full height, Qui-Gon gestured for the healer to accompany him to the door. He was not pleased with Healer Ru’tan and her refusal to listen to what he was saying.
“Thank you for your concern, Master Ru’tan. I’ll be sure to contact you
if
Obi-Wan needs you.”
“Master Jinn,” Miranda began. “I am fully aware of your dislike for soul healers. However, you and your apprentice are under a direct mandate to seek counseling. I am also aware of your loyalty to your padawans and I respect that, but do not think for one minute that you are the only one who knows what is best for Obi-Wan. He is not going to be whole again just because you say so.”
The soul healer knew that as much as the Jedi master would deny it, he was allowing his own emotions to cloud his judgment. She had to make him understand that she truly wanted to help, but Miranda knew that from the hardened expression on Qui-Gon’s face that he did not agree with her assessment of the situation. The healer never got to hear Qui-Gon’s reply for the Jedi master’s attention was consumed by Obi-Wan’s panicked cry.
“Master!” Obi-Wan threw off the covers as he grabbed the waste receptacle and began to retch violently. He felt Qui-Gon’s strong hands on his shoulders, supporting him as he continued to vomit.
“Go find Master Nathe!” Qui-Gon instructed the healer. His tone was a bit harsher than he intended, but the sense of urgency in his voice urged the soul healer to act quickly. The Jedi master continued to hold onto Obi-Wan as he whispered soothing words of encouragement in the boy’s ear.
The Jedi tightened his grip as Obi-Wan collapsed against him. Qui-Gon could see the flushed appearance of his padawan’s cheeks and feel the youth’s trembling body as he sought comfort in the arms of his master.
“I’m sorry,” whispered Obi-Wan. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to get sick. I tried not to, but I couldn’t help it. I won’t do it again, I promise.”
“Obi-Wan? Obi-Wan, it’s all right. You can’t help being sick. You…” Qui-Gon closed his eyes against the realization of what Obi-Wan was saying. His padawan was reliving a moment in his past. He was apologizing for being sick because he expected punishment.
If it were possible, Qui-Gon pulled Obi-Wan even closer to him, wanting his padawan to feel safe. “It’s all right, Obi-Wan. You did nothing wrong.”
Feeling a hand on his shoulder, Qui-Gon glanced up to find Master Healer Nathe studying the pair. “See if you can lay him down so I can examine him.”
When Qui-Gon tried to lay Obi-Wan back on the bed, the youth grabbed onto the Jedi master’s robe as if he were holding on for his life. “Please don’t,” the padawan begged. “I won’t do it anymore. I won’t get sick. You don’t have to tie me down. Please don’t do this!”
Noting the rising anxiety in the teen, Qui-Gon once again tried to placate him with words. “Obi-Wan, no one is going to tie you down. Master Nathe just wants to have a look at you.”
The Jedi master quickly realized that his words fell on deaf ears. With a strength that he would not have thought possible, the padawan pulled away from Qui-Gon and stumbled across the room to the first corner he could find.
Obi-Wan slid down the wall, pulling his knees up to his chest so he could rest his head.
~I’m so tired. What is he waiting for? I wish he would just get it over with and maybe then I could rest. He’s coming over here. He is so mad…I messed up the bed. I couldn’t help it. Why can’t he understand that? He’s getting closer. Force help me!~
The youth tried to push himself farther into the corner. He had no choice but to brace himself for the punishment that he could no longer avoid. Obi-Wan tensed his body in preparation to ward off the blows that would normally follow. When they did not come, the apprentice raised his head enough to catch a glimpse of Master Jinn kneeling in front of him.
“Obi-Wan, it’s me. Master Qui-Gon.”
Qui-Gon’s voice was firm yet full of compassion. He carefully watched the padawan as the fog surrounding his confused mind seemed to lift. The Jedi master saw recognition in Obi-Wan’s eyes as the boy realized what had happened.
Obi-Wan forced himself to stand on shaking legs. He was so ashamed of his actions and his thoughts that he could barely stand to look at his master. “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what came over me. Please forgive me.”
Qui-Gon took a tentative step towards Obi-Wan and stretched out his arms. “There is nothing to forgive, my padawan.”
Obi-Wan started towards his master and found that he could no longer rely on his own strength to stand. Qui-Gon caught the apprentice as he collapsed and lifted him up to carry him towards the bed. There was no struggle this time as he lay Obi-Wan on the bed. The Jedi master remained by his side as Master Nathe examined him.
“Obi-Wan, I’m going to give you something to help with the fever and nausea. It’s probably going to make you a little groggy, so don’t fight it. I want you to rest. This withdrawal is already taking a lot out of you.”
The Master Healer couldn’t help but notice the youth flinch when the hypo spray was injected into his neck. He didn’t wish to evoke any more bad memories for Obi-Wan but he could not allow the padawan to suffer needlessly when he could do something for him. There would come a time in the withdrawal when nothing could be done and Obi-Wan would have to endure them with nothing but willful determination.
Nathe continued to examine Obi-Wan as the padawan struggled to stay awake. He knew that the youth was still embarrassed by his actions despite the words of reassurance and encouragement from Master Jinn. Everyone in the room could sense the anxiety that rolled off the boy in waves.
Placing a comforting hand on Obi-Wan’s arm, the Master Healer sat on the edge of the bed. “Obi-Wan, don’t fight it. You must calm yourself”
“I can’t. I’m afraid to sleep,” the youth admitted.
“You’re exhausted. You’re heart rate is elevated as well as your blood pressure. If you do not allow yourself to rest, you will not have any strength left to make it through the worse part of the withdrawal. Please just close your eyes and try to sleep.”
The apprentice knew the healer was right. He needed to conserve what little energy he had. Turning on his side in an attempt to get comfortable, the youth felt something poking him through his sleep tunic. Obi-Wan was reminded of the stone that Qui-Gon had given him that he had placed in the pocket of his bed clothes, keeping it close to him. For some reason that the youth could not explain, the tiny rock seemed to bring comfort to the teen. Perhaps he felt drawn to it because of the simple fact that it was a reminder of the future Qui-Gon had promised him.
Obi-Wan held the stone tightly in the palm of his hands as he finally closed his eyes, drifting into a drug-induced slumber. The monitor above his bed indicated that the padawan’s vitals were returning to normal. Pleased with the reading, the Master Healer stood up and motioned for Qui-Gon to join him.
They quietly made their way towards the door where Master Ru’tan had remained unobtrusively. She had quietly concentrated on the scene that had played out before her a few moments earlier. Obi-Wan had provided all of them with just a hint of the nightmare that he had been forced to live in the past several years. Miranda prayed to the Force that Qui-Gon would now welcome her help instead of resenting her presence.
“This is only the beginning,” she stated. “Things are going to get much worse for him.”
Nathe nodded in agreement. The healer turned his attention to Qui-Gon, who seemed to be in a state of mild shock. “Qui-Gon? Qui-Gon, are you all right?”
“He was punished for being sick. What kind of monster would punish a child for being sick?” The Jedi master had witnessed many atrocities in his lifetime, but in his mind, nothing could compare to what had been done to his padawan.
“I don’t know,” Nathe replied. “Qui-Gon, you can’t handle this alone.”
“I know that. I just want what’s best for him.” Qui-Gon bowed to Master Healer Ru’tan. “I owe you an apology.”
“That is not necessary, Master Jinn. Our main concern is how we can best help Obi-Wan.” The soul healer’s voice was full of compassion and genuine concern for the padawan.
“That’s all I want,” Qui-Gon quietly said. “So what do we do now?”
The soul healer and the Jedi master looked to Master Nathe to provide them with an answer. The healer sighed and shook his head. “I’m not sure. Padawan Kenobi should sleep for at least a couple of hours. Let’s meet in my office in half an hour.”
Qui-Gon and Miranda nodded in agreement. The three masters fixed their gaze on the sleeping padawan. Hopefully, together they would help Obi-Wan through this trial. The Jedi master moved back to his apprentice’s side, wishing that the withdrawal was the only thing the teen had to face.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Master Mace Windu strode through the corridors of the Jedi Temple. Those who passed him could tell by the stern expression on his face that the senior Council member had a purpose and it would demonstrate great wisdom on their part not to get in his path. Master Windu finally reached his destination outside of Master Yoda’s chambers. He had attempted to release the frustration that he was feeling to the Force, but was finding it difficult.
Before he could press the call button to announce his presence, the door slid open, inviting the Master to enter. Without uttering a word, Mace sat down across from Master Yoda and waited for the tiny master to acknowledge him.
“Sensed you coming, I did. Upset you are. What is the reason?”
“I just spoke with Master Gallia and we may have a problem. She has just finished conducting a preliminary investigation involving Master Su’cim, Master Kirloth, and Knight Griddon.”
“Did they offer a confession?” Yoda inquired.
“Not exactly. However, they were very forthcoming with evidence of a different kind.” Mace paused to consider how he was going to tell Yoda what he had learned. The ancient Jedi had a special place in his heart for Padawan Kenobi and he was not sure how his friend would react.
“Wasting time you are. Tell me what you have learned.”
“Very well. The three of them are denying the allegations that have been brought against them. They are claiming that the only dealings they had with Padawan Kenobi was when he had left the Temple without permission and Master Elad had sought their help in returning him. They are also saying that when they found Obi-Wan, he told them that he was planning to kill his master.
They brought Obi-Wan back to the Temple and stated that they had told Master Elad what Obi-Wan had said. The three of them did admit stopping by Master Elad and Padawan Kenobi’s chambers to check on the boy. Apparently, they believe that Obi-Wan assumed they were in allegiance with Master Elad because of that.”
“Did Master Gallia interview them separately?”
“Yes she did. The account is the same in all three versions,” Mace replied.
“Lying they are.”
“What if they’re not? There are three of them telling the same story. Obi-Wan admitted himself that he didn’t know if he had been hurt by any of them. There is also the possibility that Obi-Wan planned to murder Master Elad. That fact alone could change everything. We do not need a padawan at the Temple who…”
“Enough! You are speaking of things that have not been proven.” Yoda climbed down out of his seat and slowly walked over to the window that provided him with a panoramic view of the city.
“We need to speak to Obi-Wan,” Mace stated.
“No. He is not in any condition to speak with us. Bring Master Su’cim, Master Kirloth, and Knight Griddon before the Council. Convince me they must of their innocence.”
“My old friend, do not allow your fondness of Obi-Wan to cloud your judgment.”
“Clouded my judgment is not. I know Padawan Kenobi well and I know that if he were not sure about something, he would not have made the accusation.”
“Yoda, please listen to me. I don’t want to see the boy put through any more than he already has been, but we have an obligation to be fair to everyone involved in this.”
“Meditate on this I must. I will join you later in the Council Chambers. Consider your words, I will.”
Yoda continued to gaze out the window as Master Windu rose from his seat and left the chambers of the old master. Hearing the door close, Yoda made his way to his favorite meditation spot in the room and closed his eyes as the Force wrapped its tendrils around his very soul. The Jedi master sought the Force once again for answers to a puzzle that seemed to be missing quite a few pieces.
Oh dear, the plan to discredit Obi-Wan is working already.
Poor Obi-Wan, thinking he would be punished for being ill, that's just so heart wrenching, I just want to give the baby a hug....
Excellent work!
