Valairy_Scot:
Now we're getting somewhere (rubs hands gleefully). Let Yoda make the Council see sense.
Yoda and a few others will hopefully bring the Council to their senses.
I hope all works out for Obi and Siri. Lovely story, Jedidas3.
Thank you so much for you kind words. I hope you realize how much your support means to me!
Cole_Kenobi:
Thank you so much!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Bastet:
The Council has me worried though.
I don't think you have too much to worry about. Yoda, Qui-Gon, and Siri will have their say!
Blue_Lightsaber42:
Bad Mace, if it was your apprentice you would want them to still be a Jedi. Right?
I'm sure he wouldn't...unfortunately, he hasn't thought of it from that aspect.
Nienna_Narmolanya:
It's so good to hear from you. I'm glad you caught up!
I'm so nervous about these council testimony sessions! And I wonder what Siri will have to say. I hope she doesn't let her feelings run away with her (though maybe that's what the Council needs to see) and I hope Mace and the others will be made to see reason, though I understand where their fears are coming from. It's like Yoda said before (five chapters ago or so), the Jedi Order has an obligation teach Obi-Wan to harness his power. Leaving him by the wayside can only result in disaster, for Obi-Wan surely and maybe for the galaxy at large if evil finds him.
Well, let me lay some of your fears to rest. Siri and Qui-Gon's testimony will make a big difference for most of the Council. Of course, Yoda will have his hand in it as well.
Five awesome chapters, jedidas. I've arranged for truckloads of chocolate Easter bunnies to arrive at your house early tomorrow morning...to make up for lost time.
Thank you so much! Chocolate! Yippee!!!
Just for that, I'm going to post the next part!
wolf_kenobi:
What a nice thing to say. I can't begint to tell you how much I appreciate your kind words. Thank you!
callista_gseran:
Oh, the suspense....! Sorry I didn't comment for a few posts, I have been out of state at a memorial service... Nice work so far, keep it up!
Thank you so much and please don't apologize for not commenting. There was something far more important that you had to do. My condolences...
silverfighter:
Uh yeah, they are so very meant to be together! But now, since Obi-Wan is obviously a bit damaged mentally, will all the events that happen to him still happen, or will Qui-Gon not die?
You're really pushing for another sequel, aren't you? You know that I can't tell you that...mainly because I haven't decided.
P.S. I like the smiles!
bek:
It appears to already be starting, Adi trying to keep Siri from Obi-Wan's side. I'm glad that Siri is her own person and doesn't allow others to make choices for her. The two young ones appear to need one another right now. Hopefully their masters will come to understand this.
I hope so too, but I'm not sure if they'll be willing to allow the Padawans to go against the code.
Thank you so much for your support. I'm looking forward to the next part of "Not Myself."
Hopefully soon!
Healer_Leona:
You're absolutely right...Obi needs all the friends he can get.
Thank you all so much for reading. Here is the next post and I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for being such loyal readers!
Part 46
Master Healer Nathe entered Obi-Wan’s room to find the young man sitting up in his bed. He could tell by the dark circles under the teen’s eyes that he was still exhausted despite the several hours of uninterrupted sleep. Of course, it would take a while for the boy to recover from his ordeal; Nathe just hoped that he would be given the opportunity to do so. Glancing between Master Jinn and Obi-Wan, the Healer felt as if he had just disrupted a poignant moment between the two of them.
He cleared his throat to announce his arrival, giving Obi-Wan time to place his stoic mask back on. Nathe walked over to the youth’s bedside and gave the Master and Padawan an encouraging smile.
“How are you feeling, Padawan Kenobi?” the Master Healer inquired.
“I’m all right,” the teen muttered.
Nathe studied the youth closely as Obi-Wan stared down at his hands. He could sense deep remorse coming from the apprentice. When the youth finally spoke, Nathe had to strain to hear what he was saying.
“I’m sorry for destroying the room,” Obi-Wan whispered.
“Don’t even worry about that,” he reassured the boy. “I never really liked that room anyway. It’s far too drab.”
His attempt at humor was rewarded by a tiny chuckle.
“It’s a healer’s wing. It’s supposed to be drab,” the youth reminded him.
“Really? I wasn’t aware of that.”
Nathe was glad that he could bring a smile to Obi-Wan’s face. As far as he was concerned, the boy had not smiled enough in his young life. Glancing at the monitor that was keeping a check on the youth’s vital signs, the healer was satisfied with the readings.
“Do you feel up for some tests today?”
“I guess I might as well. You’re not going to let me out of here until you get what you want.”
“You know me well, young one.”
The healer looked up to address the boy’s Master. “Qui-Gon, I’m going to be a while. Why don’t you go get something to eat?”
“I’m fine,” the Jedi stated. “I’d prefer to stay here with Obi-Wan, if that is all right.”
Nathe shook his head at the persistent Jedi. “I promise you that I will not leave Obi-Wan alone.”
“No, I can’t. I won’t leave him,” Qui-Gon affirmed.
“It’s all right, Master Jinn. I’ll be fine,” Obi-Wan interjected.
“Obi-Wan, I…”
“I need you to take care of yourself. Please Master,” the young man pleaded.
Nathe could see that the bond between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan was growing stronger. The devotion that they were beginning to demonstrate towards each other was something that Healer had wondered if he would ever see. He recalled how each of them had been a prisoner to their past, neither trusting the other completely. But the Master Healer could see that something had drastically changed and he knew that the Master and Padawan’s bond would continue to develop into something special.
“Very well,” Qui-Gon said. “But I won’t be gone long.”
“We’ll be here,” Nathe promised the Master.
He watched the Master Jedi as Qui-Gon picked up his robe and reluctantly headed towards the door. As he left, Nathe turned his attention back to the apprentice.
“Now I’m going to take some blood and check your midichlorian levels,” he informed the youth. “Then I’d like to do a scan of your brain to make sure nothing has changed since the last time.”
“You mentioned that I had some damage in the area that controls my emotions. Do you think that you could fix it?’”
Nathe was taken back by the teen’s directness. He didn’t expect the boy to even remember that conversation. Despite the fact that the Force used Obi-Wan to channel itself, the boy’s control of the Force was still tenuous at best.
“I’m not sure what we’ll need to do, Obi-Wan,” the Healer honestly answered.
“I couldn’t control what happened,” the teen admitted. “If I’m going to be able to a Jedi, I have to be able to control my emotions.”
“Let me see what the scan reveals and then we’ll sit down with your Master and discuss the possibilities,” Nathe said, hoping to pacify the teen.
“Now, let’s get those tests started before your Master gets back and accuses us of merely trying to get rid of him.”
Master Nathe proceeded to draw several vials of blood from the young man’s arm. He was not sure when he came to admire the young man lying in the bed, but there was no doubt in his mind that Obi-Wan Kenobi was a special Padawan. The Healer vowed that he would also do everything in his power to make sure that Obi-Wan was allowed to stay in the Temple and become a Jedi Knight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Adi Gallia sighed in frustration. It was taking all her years of training as a Jedi to not allow her irritation with the Council to show on her face. She was surprised that she had not been reprimanded for having thoughts unbecoming of a Jedi.
“I’ve already answered these questions twice. My answers will not change, Master Windu,” she stated, knowing that her tone was bordering on being disrespectful. “I was taken captive and was not there at the time Padawan Kenobi was channeling the Force. I only know what I’ve been told.”
“Very well, Master Gallia,” Mace finally conceded. “Perhaps your apprentice can shed some light on the situation.”
“I’m sure she can, but I will not have her badgered,” Adi warned the senior Council member.
“Excuse me?” Mace stared at his colleague in disbelief.
“I said that I will not allow you to harass her and try to confuse her. She has been through a difficult time and is still very tired. I would prefer her to be able to rest for a few more days, but since the Council seems determined to press forward, she will do what is required of her.”
“It is not our intention to harass her, Master Gallia. It is our intention to get to the truth. We must decide how best to handle Padawan Kenobi.”
“Here’s a suggestion, Master Windu. Why don’t you just leave him alone?”
“Because he is dangerous,” Master Windu replied, the deep timbre of his voice indicating that he was through discussing the matter with Master Gallia. “You are dismissed, Master Gallia. Please send in your apprentice.”
“As you wish.” Adi bowed to the Council and turned on her heels. As the massive doors opened, she glanced back over her shoulder. “This Council used to be known for its compassion. Somewhere along the way, we’ve lost our purpose. If we let him, Obi-Wan Kenobi could very well help us find it again.”
As the doors closed behind her, she took a deep breath, gathering her anxieties and releasing them to the Force. She tried to smile at her apprentice as Siri approached her.
“How did it go?” the girl nervously inquired.
“About like I expected it to go,” the Master replied. “They’re waiting for you. Don’t let Master Windu try and confuse you. Keep your temper in check and don’t volunteer any information. Answer only the questions that they ask you.”
“What if I say something that would hurt Obi-Wan?”
“I don’t think you will. Just think before you answer. I’ll be right outside. If you need me, you call for me,” the Jedi instructed.
“Yes, Master.”
Adi pulled her Padawan into her embrace, hoping that the girl would draw from her strength. She released Siri and turned, opening the doors for her Padawan.
“May the Force be with you, Siri.”
“And with you, Master Gallia.”
Adi watched her apprentice disappear into the Council chambers. After the doors closed, Adi took a seat that was nearest the door. She closed her eyes, making sure that her bond with Siri was open so she could monitor the young girl. The Councilor was thankful that the Force had blessed her with such a strong apprentice, but even Siri had her Achilles heel.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Qui-Gon Jinn took his tray and sat down at one of the empty tables. He could feel the stares of the other Masters and students as he attempted to eat his meal. The Jedi Master could just imagine what they were thinking. He had heard some of the rumors that had been circulating within the Temple.
Some Jedi felt that Obi-Wan was a danger to the Jedi Order and there were those who were simply curious. There were some who wanted to see him banished and those who felt that the boy should be kept in a special room designed to contain his powers for the rest of his life.
Qui-Gon found himself wondering what his fellow Jedi talked about before his apprentice came on the scene. He could no longer hide his annoyance as he took his fork and tapped it against his glass demanding the attention of everybody in the common area.
He stood up and called out, “May I have your attention, please?”
The Jedi Master waited until all eyes were focused on him. “If anyone has anything to say about my apprentice, I wish that you would refrain from doing so. He does not need to be privy to the rumors and the lies that I have heard in the five minutes that I have been in this dining room. He has been through a very difficult time and I’m sure that he would appreciate a little understanding and support from his fellow Jedi. Now, if there are any further concerns about my Padawan, please feel free to bring them to my attention.”
Qui-Gon sat back down and started eating his meal, taking a moment to enjoy the stunned silence of the crowd.
“That was quite a speech.”
The Jedi Master looked up from his tray and smiled at his visitor. “Tahl, it’s good to see you. Would you like to join me?”
“Is it safe?”
“Of course.”
He stood up and pulled the chair out for his dearest friend.
“So, how are you doing?” he asked, as he took a sip of his water.
“I’m fine. Bant and I both have received a clean bill of health. She is still sleeping. I thought that she needed to catch up on her rest before we have to appear before the Council. How’s Obi-Wan?”
“He’s exhausted.” Qui-Gon glanced around making sure that no one was within hearing range. “He had another…episode last night. He destroyed one of the rooms in the healer’s ward.”
“Just one room?”
“Yoda contained it.”
“I see,” Tahl said. “Qui-Gon…”
“Don’t say it. I don’t know how we’re going to handle this just yet, but I’m working on it. I do know that Obi-Wan will be a Jedi, despite what the Council says.”
“Defying the Council once again?” Tahl asked with a mock seriousness.
“Would you expect me to do otherwise?”
“I would be worried about you if you actually listened to them,” Tahl quipped.
“Well, I wouldn’t want to be guilty of causing you undue worry.” Qui-Gon reached out and lightly patted Tahl’s hand. “Everything is going to work out.”
“I hope so. For your sake and Obi-Wan’s sake. Now, why don’t you finish your meal before it gets cold?”
“Too late.” Qui-Gon pushed back his tray and sighed. “I need to get back to Obi-Wan. Nathe has been running some tests this morning.”
“Excuse me, Master Jinn?”
Qui-Gon turned to see who the timid voice belonged to. He recognized the Padawan as one of the Council pages. Knowing that this young girl had been sent to find him could only mean one thing. The Council wanted him to give his testimony.
“Yes, Padawan?”
“I’ve been asked to inform you that the Council wishes to speak to you after they are done talking with Padawan Tachi,” the girl nervously informed the Jedi.
“Thank you, Padawan.”
He watched as the apprentice quickly fled from the dining hall. “Well, it looks like I’m going to get my chance sooner than later.”
“Are you ready to face them?” his friend inquired.
“More than ready. There are a few things that I’ve been waiting to say.”
“Don’t get in there and make things worse for you and Obi-Wan.”
“That is not my intention, my dear Tahl. I’m just going to set the record straight.”
Qui-Gon stood up and gathered his tray to empty it. He nodded a quick goodbye to Tahl and headed towards the Council chambers. The Jedi Master would notify Master Nathe and Obi-Wan that he would be detained once he reached the waiting area outside the Council room.
He had to convince the Council that his apprentice deserved to be a Jedi. He would show them the kind of person that Obi-Wan was. The Jedi Master would not leave that meeting until he was assured that his voice had been heard. He knew that Obi-Wan’s future was depending on it.

I can hardly wait for Qui to address the Council
(and loved
Adi's little speech about compassion).
I am curious what Nathe will find out, and if there is a "fix" for Obi-Wan or even needs to be.
Next chapter ought to be one heck of a good ride.

As usual, a wonderful update!
I loved Qui's reluctance to leave Obi-Wan, and how Nathe could tell that their bond was growing stronger.
“It is not our intention to harass her, Master Gallia. It is our intention to get to the truth. We must decide how best to handle Padawan Kenobi.”
“Here’s a suggestion, Master Windu. Why don’t you just leave him alone?”
You tell them, Adi! It's just too bad they probably won't listen.
I loved Qui-Gon's speech to his fellow Jedi, hope it stops some of the gossiping. Shame on the Jedi for spreading rumors!
I can't wait to see what Qui-Gon has to say to the Council.

Woohoo! Go Qui-gon! About time. Hehe, not really in this story but you know what I mean. lol
Loved the banter between him and Tahl, just splendid. "Is it safe?" Ha. lol
Maybe Obi-wan's healer will shed some light to the Council on the beautiful soul which is Obi-wan Kenobi. Ahah.
I love how Adi addressed Mace and the Council, way to go girl!
I fear that Siri will let her emotions out run her intellect when it comes to the questions about Obi-wan. I hope she heeds her master's advice and either stays quite and quietly fumes or, well I guess it'll probably be a catch-22 situation. Anyway, can't wait to read it, and see how Qui-gon favors too.
Great update!

“Remember what I told you,” Qui-Gon urged. “You will be a Jedi and you will be a great one.”
The sound of Obi-Wan’s desolate sigh tore at the Jedi Master’s heart. He would not lose faith in himself, his apprentice, or the Force. He had denied the will of the Force years ago and the results had been disastrous, nearly costing Obi-Wan everything including his life. Qui-Gon would not make that mistake again. The Force was clearly telling him that he and Obi-Wan belonged together. Now all he had to do was convince the Council.
Yaaaayy Qui-Gon you are meant to help Obi and I know you are doing a brilliant job just like the author of this fantastic story.
Well done
I loved Adi's reaction and comments to Mace
I'm back and I love your story jedidas3

If Mace is that determined to be rid of Obi-Wan by harassing Adi, a fellow Council member, with repeated questions in hopes of tripping her up, I'd hate to see what he'd do to Siri. She'd best keep her emotions in check or Mace just may prey on her love for Obi-Wan as a way to make her slip and say something that would condemn him instead of help him.
I think Mace is in for a surprise when Qui-Gon goes before the Council. Something tells me he won't be as easily intimidated by Mace's questions and such. I hope Qui-Gon succeeds in his quest when answering the Council's questions.
Obi-Wan appears to be putting trust in Healer Nathe. It was cool the way the healer joked with him to put Obi-Wan at ease, to make him smile.
Looking forward to the next post!

This was a superb post, jedias3!
I loved how Obi-Wan made Qui get something to eat.
Very sweet.
I'm glad that Obi has Master Nathe's support- it seems he needs all the help he can get.
Adi did a great job of standing up to the council. I just hope Siri can manage as well...
Bad council.
Nice job Qui-Gon, to stand up to everyone! Way to go!
You'd think Jedi would show a bit more compassion.
Brilliant as always! Looking forward to more!!

Thank you very much!

Qui-Gon addressing the Council will be very interesting. I'm sure it will be something the Council will never forget!
Next chapter ought to be one heck of a good ride.
I hope so! I'm working on it as we speak and so far, it's been a lot of fun.
Bastet:

I'm working on it!

Siri's going to have a very difficult time, but she will get her point across. As for Qui-Gon, I think that you will enjoy reading about his encounter with the Council.

Yep...I think you'll be pleased with how Qui-Gon is going to handle the Council.

One thing about Qui-Gon you can count on is when he believes in something or somebody, it doesn't matter what others say.

jedidas3--
That was another good post. I liked Qui-Gon's speech to the cafeteria, though I'm confused....................
I thought Jedi were understnding, perceptive and good at perspective, hmmmmm. I guess that wouldn't be much fun:)
I am looking forward to reading Qui -Gon's meeting with the council, and hoping that Siri mirrors her light in their eyes. It may be hard to change their minds, though.

Poor Obi-Wan, there's always someone so set against him, so stubborn and blind, makes me wonder how they became Jedi?

They certainly have their work cut out for them.

RE: The Best of Intentions (Obi-Qui, AU) Sequel to The Truth Shall Set You Free Updated 03/27!
Part 47
Siri stood before the Council, waiting patiently for the inquisition to begin. She tried to tell herself that she wasn’t nervous, but knew that it was a lie. Not only was she nervous, she was terrified. Siri didn’t want to say anything that could hurt Obi-Wan’s chances and she didn’t want to appear that she was trying to hide something, even though she was.
The young girl made eye contact with Master Yoda and released the breath that she had been inadvertently holding. Siri was fully aware of the fact that Obi-Wan had an ally in Master Yoda and for that she was grateful, but it still did not stop the sick feeling that was gnawing at the pit of her stomach.
“Ready to begin, are you?” the tiny Master inquired.
“Yes Master Yoda, I’m ready.”
“Very well. Master Windu will be asking the questions. Take your time in answering,” the grand Master instructed. “Consider your thoughts before you speak.”
The apprentice nodded her understanding to Master Yoda. She was aware that the Jedi Master, in his own indirect way, was reminding her to keep her emotions under control. Siri could not let Master Windu rattle her; that could be disastrous not only for her, but for Obi-Wan as well.
“I understand, Master,” she calmly replied.
“Then we’ll begin,” Master Windu interjected. “State your name for the record, please.”
Siri swallowed hard. “Padawan Siri Tachi.”
“What is your relationship to Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi?”
She blinked in surprise. Did Master Windu know of her feelings towards Obi-Wan? Siri gathered the Force around her and allowed it to calm her as she thought about the question that had been posed.
“I’m his friend,” she finally answered.
“I see,” Mace stated.
The disapproving tone of his voice told Siri that he wasn’t convinced of her answer. She waited for his next question, hoping that he would not probe any further into the special relationship she had with Obi-Wan.
“How long have you known Padawan Kenobi?” Master Windu wanted to know.
“For several years.”
“Did you know him when he was apprenticed to Master Elad?”
“Yes, I did.”
Siri prayed that Master Windu would not bring up Obi-Wan’s past and would move on to the matter at hand. She failed to understand why the Council didn’t seem to be able to leave the past where it belonged. But evidently, her prayers were not heard.
“How well did you know him during this time?” the Korun Master asked.
“We were friends, Master Windu. A friendship takes time to develop, so I can’t honestly say how well I knew him back then. I don’t see why this line of questioning is even necessary,” Siri challenged.
“I was establishing your relationship to Obi-Wan, to decide that if you should be considered a hostile witness,” Mace informed the young girl.
“I wasn’t aware that Obi-Wan was actually on trial. I just assumed that the Council was interested in finding out what happened between Obi-Wan and Xanatos.”
“Padawan Tachi, it is my observation that you do not want to be here and that you have something to hide. You are broadcasting those facts very loudly. Now, I suggest you remember your place young one or you will be censured.”
“Threaten the apprentice you will not!” Yoda exclaimed. “Right she is in what she said. The purpose is to discover what actually happened, not to place Padawan Kenobi on trial. Ask only questions pertaining to the matter at hand or remove you I will from these proceedings.”
It took all of Siri’s will power not to smile as Master Yoda reminded Master Windu of his place. She would have to tell Obi-Wan about this when she saw him; it would surely bring a smile to his face.
She could feel the tension between the two senior Council members as could the other members of the Council. Siri nervously fingered the sleeve of her robe as she waited for the scene in front of her to play out. The Padawan could almost hear the Councilors behind her sigh in relief when Master Windu turned his attention back to her.
“Padawan Tachi, in your own words, can you please describe the events that occurred as you remember them? Please begin with your arrival. We will deal with your other indiscretions such as disobeying your Master and taking a ship without permission at a later time.”
Siri nodded and bowed slightly. “Yes, Master Windu.”
The apprentice went on to explain how she had been captured along with her Master, Bant, and Master Tahl. Siri also mentioned how Xanatos had taken her to use as leverage against Obi-Wan.
“Why do you think that Xanatos used you?”
“Excuse me?” Siri wasn’t sure if she completely understood what Master Windu had asked.
“Why did Xanatos take you as his bargaining tool? I mean, Padawan Eerin is also a friend of Padawan Kenobi,” the Councilor pressed. “So why do you think he chose you?’
“I don’t know, Master Windu,” she quietly answered as she once again fought for control of her tumultuous emotions.
“I see,” Master Windu said, the deep timber of his voice letting her know that he didn’t believe her. “Please continue then.”
Siri proceeded with her recollection of the events up until the point that she was rendered unconscious. She had been relieved that she had been able to finish that part of her testimony without any further interruption. The young girl knew that she didn’t have much more to tell and waited patiently for the next question.
“So, you did not see the actual confrontation between Padawan Kenobi and Xanatos?” Mace wanted to know.
“No, I didn’t. When I came to, it was all over. I went out with Master Ru’tan and Master Plo Koon to see what had happened. Xanatos was dead and Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were unconscious. We got them back to the cabin and then I went with Master Plo Koon to contact the Temple and try and find Master Gallia, Master Tahl, and Bant.”
“Is there anything else, Padawan Tachi?”
Part of Siri wanted to simply flee from the chambers so she could go and see Obi-Wan, but there was another part of her that had more to say. Usually what got her in trouble was the inability to control her temper when she felt passionately about something and the passion she felt Obi-Wan Kenobi nearly consumed her.
‘Yes, there is,” she stated.
The Padawan could tell that Master Windu was surprised by her proclamation. He arched his eyebrow and motioned for her to continue.
“Permission to speak freely?”
“By all means, Padawan Tachi, but remember that you are addressing the Council.”
“Thank you, Master.” Siri cleared her throat and stood tall. Gathering her thoughts, she began to speak, hoping that her voice would not betray her nervousness.
“I believe that you are being unfair to Padawan Kenobi. He did not ask for what happened to him. With all he has been through in his life, he shouldn’t have to worry about his place within the Jedi. So what if he has this power that most of you seem to be afraid of? He doesn’t know what to do with it and you all are not helping him. I thought that as Jedi, we were supposed to be understanding and tolerant of differences. At least that is what we were taught from our early years in the crèche. We were led to believe that it is our differences that make us unique.”
Siri could feel the eyes of the various Council members staring at her, but she didn’t dare look away from Master Windu and Master Yoda. She knew that if she broke contact with the two senior Councilors, she would lose her nerve. As intimidating as Master Windu’s glare was, she could sense the support and approval from Master Yoda.
“I think the Council needs to consider what will happen if you don’t help Obi-Wan. You will be showing the other Jedi and everyone else in the Temple that the way of the Jedi is no longer that of compassion, but one of hasty accusations and judgments.”
“Thank you, Padawan Tachi for your opinion,” Mace remarked. “You are dismissed.”
“What?” Siri exclaimed. “That’s it? Did anything I said even remotely melt that cold heart of yours?”
“Padawan Tachi, that will be all,” Mace said, his voice was tight and barely audible.
“But…”
“I suggest you leave now, Padawan.”
“Your words will be considered,” Master Yoda assured the apprentice. “Spoken the truth, you have. We will contact you if any more questions, we have.”
Satisfied that she had been heard, Siri bowed to the Council and hastily retreated from the Council chambers. As soon as she stepped through the doors, she looked for her Master. Siri spotted her talking to Obi-Wan’s Master, Qui-Gon Jinn.
She waited to be acknowledged by her Master. It only took a few seconds until Adi motioned her over to join them. Siri respectfully bowed to the two Masters.
“How did it go?” Adi anxiously inquired.
“I don’t know. I guess it went all right. I was able to say what was on my mind and I didn’t lose my temper too much, with the exception of telling Master Windu that he had a cold heart.”
“Siri…”
“I couldn’t help it. He obviously has it in for Obi-Wan, but at least Master Yoda is in there.”
“We’ll talk about it later,” Adi promised.
“Yes, Master.”
Siri stepped back as Master Jinn walked by her and headed for the Council room. “Is Master Jinn testifying already?”
“Yes,” Adi replied. “They summoned him a little while ago.”
“Oh…well, I guess I need to go and see what assignments I’ve missed since I’ve been gone.”
“That’s probably a good idea,” the Jedi agreed. “By the way, did the Council say anything about you taking a ship and leaving the Temple without permission?”
“Um…they just said that they would deal with it later.”
“I’m sure they will as will I,” Adi promised.
“I was afraid that you would say that.”
“We will discuss it later. Now, go and get your assignments and get started on them. I’ll meet you for evening meal,” Adi instructed the Padawan. “I have some things I must attend to.”
“Yes, Master.”
Siri bowed once again and watched her Master as she gracefully made her way towards the lift. After she could no longer see Adi, the apprentice took another lift to the healer’s wing. She had to see Obi-Wan and now would be the perfect time since Qui-Gon would be with the Council. Siri was fully aware that she was disobeying her Master’s request to stay away from him, but she had to see him. The girl had convinced herself that she would only stay a few minutes; she had to know if he was all right.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Master Qui-Gon Jinn stood before the Council, his gaze never wavering from the two senior Council members. He performed the customary bow and waited to be addressed. The Jedi had been looking forward to this opportunity to convince the Council that his Padawan should remain at the Temple and become a Jedi. He had never met anyone who wanted to be a Jedi Knight more that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon was determined to see that he achieved his goal.
“Please state your name and your relation to Padawan Kenobi,” Mace began.
“I am Master Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan is my Padawan learner,” Qui-Gon coolly replied.
“How long have known Padawan Kenobi?”
“For approximately six months.”
“Thank you, Master Jinn. Now, please tell us in your own words what happened.”
Qui-Gon arched his brow as he studied his old friend. He noticed that Mace was more reserved than usual as if he were trying to tamp down his frustration and anger. The Jedi Master wondered if these proceedings were going in the direction that Mace had intended.
“I’m not exactly sure what you want to hear,” Qui-Gon remarked. “I think that you should know that Xanatos had pursued Obi-Wan relentlessly before the final confrontation. He took great pleasure in tormenting my Padawan and making sure that the boy was suffering.
“He wanted Obi-Wan to come with him, but I would not let him. Obi-Wan was ready to sacrifice himself just so Xanatos would leave everyone else alone. Xanatos had already attacked Padawans Bruck Chun and Garen Mlun and my Padawan felt responsible for their conditions. It was Xanatos who killed Master Su’cim and the others and it was Xanatos who kidnapped Master Tahl, Master Gallia, and their Padawans.
“All this was done to get Obi-Wan to leave the Jedi. However, Xanatos was not acting alone. He was the middle man. There is someone else out there who is still very interested in Obi-Wan.”
Pausing a moment to allow his words to be absorbed by the members of the Council. He wasn’t sure that they had even considered the possibility that Xanatos wasn’t acting on his own accord. In fact, he could tell from the expressions on some of their faces that they had not even thought about this possibility.
“I have never seen the Force channel itself through someone like it did Obi-Wan,” Qui-Gon continued. “He knew what was about to happen and I would dare say that he fought against it for as long as he could. Obi-Wan could not contain the power inside him, so it manifested itself in the elements. He continued towards Xanatos, begging me to leave. I remember that I could barely see him through the dust that was swirling in the air. I felt as if I were in a sand storm on Tatooine.
“There was a loud noise, almost like an explosion and then it apparently was all over. I was unconscious and Obi-Wan was as well. The next thing I remember is waking up and then I buried Xanatos. Obi-Wan remained unresponsive until we were on our way back to the Temple.”
“You said that he fought against it,” Mace clarified.
“He told me that he couldn’t control it and he wanted me to go back inside. But I couldn’t leave him there. It was as if the Force was relentless in its desire to channel itself through him. The Force had a purpose and Obi-Wan was the instrument it chose to use.”
“Have there been any other episodes that you know of?”
Qui-Gon glared at Mace. He should have expected the senior Councilor to call attention to what happened in the healer’s wing. The Jedi Master was aware that the Council members sensed his reluctance to answer the question.
“It happened one time before when Obi-Wan was still apprenticed to Master Elad,” Qui-Gon informed them.
“Is that the only other time that you’re aware of, Master Jinn?” Mace repeated.
“Last night in the healer’s wing,” the Jedi Master admitted. “Obi-Wan was having a dream or something.”
“Why wasn’t it felt throughout the Temple?”
“Because Master Yoda contained it.”
“I see. So, without someone or something to contain this power, Padawan Kenobi could be considered to be a threat to others as well as to the Temple itself,” Mace surmised.
“No. Obi-Wan would never intentionally hurt anyone.”
“I never said he would. I just merely said that he was a threat to the Jedi.”
“No, he’s not. He didn’t ask for this!” Qui-Gon exclaimed, his irritation with the Council, particularly with Master Windu, was obvious in his distinguished baritone. “He needs your help, not your judgment. He does not want this burden, yet the Force has placed it upon him. How many times has the Force directed one of you to do something that you were unsure of? He doesn’t even understand why he has this power and quite frankly, neither do I. But, I intend to be by his side while we try and find out.”
“Master Jinn, you can’t help him control this power,” Mace attempted to reason with the Jedi Master. “I saw the room, Qui-Gon. I doubt much of the healing wing would be standing this morning had Master Yoda not been there. It was completely destroyed. There are not many who can contain that kind of power.”
“Obi-Wan’s ability to control this will grow as he learns to control his emotions,” Qui-Gon argued. “I’ve never seen a young man work so hard to act like a Jedi, but he can’t. He hasn’t been taught. The only true teachings that he has been exposed to have just been since I’ve taken him as my Padawan. The only thing that he learned from Master Elad was how to live in fear and accept pain. Pain which that child should have never had to endure! Let me ask where the Council was during this time. Obi-Wan was being tortured right here in the Temple and almost everybody looked the other way!
“Now, he has this special…’gift’ if you will and you are ready to send him away. What has he done that you are ready to wash your hands of him? What has Obi-Wan Kenobi done to any of you that makes you afraid of him? Let me answer this one for you. He has done nothing but try to be what was expected of him.”
Qui-Gon glanced around the room. He quickly noticed that with the exception of Mace and Yoda, none of the other Council members would meet his stony gaze.
“When Obi-Wan was with Master Elad, he was expected to be someone who accepted the pain that was bestowed upon him. He accepted it without question. He was ready to accept the responsibility for his actions when he killed Master Elad. The boy was beginning to accept that he was my Padawan and now once again, he is being plagued with self doubt and the insecurities that he was just beginning to get a handle on.
“I may not be the one that can help him control this power, but there is someone who can.”
Qui-Gon stared at the ancient Master, who nodded in agreement.
“Help him, I will,” Yoda vowed.
“And let me remind you,” Qui-Gon interjected, “that there is still someone out there who is very interested in Obi-Wan.”
“You’ve already stated that fact, Master Jinn,” Mace said.
“I’m fully aware of that, Master Windu. It just seemed to me that you had forgotten that bit of information. If Obi-Wan were dismissed and he fell into the wrong hands, then what would happen?”
“You have also made that point as well. You seem to be repeating yourself a lot.”
“Only because you have failed to hear me the first time,” Qui-Gon countered. “He eliminated Xanatos, who proved that he could infiltrate this Temple without our knowledge. Don’t you think that he has done the Jedi a service? He has protected the Jedi at a great cost to himself.”
“We are grateful that Xanatos is no longer a threat,” Mace agreed.
“Grateful? Grateful you say?” Qui-Gon questioned. “It seems to me that the Jedi are anything but grateful. Before I came here tonight, I was in the dining hall. I could hear the fear and uncertainty in the voices of the other Masters and students alike. They are fearful of something that they don’t understand. Their ignorance has made them blind as it has done to you.”
“That is enough, Master Jinn,” Master Windu warned.
“Afraid to hear the truth?” Qui-Gon pressed. “Sometimes the truth hurts doesn’t it? When I realized that the Jedi seemed to no longer have compassion for others, I began to wonder if I still wanted to be a Jedi. But then, I remember that there are those like Obi-Wan, whose light shines so brightly in the Force that it is almost blinding. It is obvious that the Force adores Obi-Wan.”
“We don’t need another Xanatos,” Mace stated.
“He is nothing like Xanatos!” Qui-Gon declared. “He puts himself before others and Xanatos never did that. How dare you even suggest that? Obi-Wan’s heart is pure, but his soul has been tainted by the life that he has lived. I realize that part of that is my fault. If I had listened to the Force back then, we wouldn’t be here today. So, if you want to punish anybody, punish me.
“No matter what this Council says, I will train Obi-Wan, with or without your blessing. If I have to take him away from the Temple, so be it. I just hope that you are prepared to accept the consequences of your decision.”
“Our decision will be final,” Mace advised the Jedi Master. “And you will abide by our edict.”
“Only if your decision is to allow Obi-Wan to remain in the Temple,” Qui-Gon defiantly answered.
“I said…”
“I don’t care what you said, Master Windu. I think I’ve made myself perfectly clear.”
Qui-Gon did not wait to be dismissed. He knew that if he remained in that room much longer, that he would say something that he may one day regret. Qui-Gon normally considered himself to be level headed, but he knew that image had been shattered in front of the Council. They had come to expect him to defy them, but he knew that they didn’t expect him to say that he would leave the Jedi with Obi-Wan.
He ignored the Padawan in the reception area of the Chambers and headed towards the lift. The Jedi Master had left Obi-Wan alone far too long. Qui-Gon hoped that Nathe was through running the tests so he and his Padawan could talk. He reached out across their bond and discovered that it was blocked. The Jedi lengthened his stride, hurrying to get to the healer’s wing. Something wasn’t right with his apprentice and he had no idea what to expect.
Qui-Gon finally reached Obi-Wan’s room and palmed open the door. Stepping in the room, an expression of shock came over the Master’s face as he took in the scene before him. As the door closed behind him, he slowly approached the young man lying in bed, choosing to ignore the blonde Padawan that was standing by Obi-Wan’s side.
“Do you care to explain what’s going on?” he asked the teen.
The Jedi Master saw the boy’s cheeks flush as he began to fumble with his sheets. Qui-Gon moved to the other side of Obi-Wan’s bed, his eyes never leaving the boy’s face. He had walked in on something very personal between the two Padawan as Siri quickly pulled away from Obi-Wan’s embrace. He finally sat down in the chair beside the bed and patiently waited for an answer.
He saw Obi-Wan and Siri exchange worried glances. Qui-Gon had just spent a better part of an hour defending his apprentice to the Council and now he had apparently caught him in a situation that would be a strict violation of the Jedi Code. The Jedi had seen the way that Obi-Wan and Siri had looked at each other. He knew that expression all too well. It was the look of two people who were hopelessly in love.
