The fact that the padawan had hesitated in killing his master proved that there was still a light of goodness flickering within his soul.
Sure there is still light in Obi-Wan! Lots of! And YOU won't be able to destroy him! angry

applause Another great chapter!
I'm glad that Obi-Wan is finally a little bit better happy
... but I absolutely don't like the fact that Bruck in now in league with Plo Koon and that Yoda is no longer involved in Obi-Wan's case worried

What?! shock They're removing Yoda from the trial?? They can't do that! They just can't.

“Well Oafy-Wan, there’s someone else who sees your true colors,” Bruck murmured to himself. The padawan felt his anger lift as he thought about his meeting with Master Plo Koon. It was good to know that he was not alone and that he still had the hope that Obi-Wan Kenobi would be destroyed.

And now Plo Koon and Bruck are plotting to destroy Obi-Wan's credibility?? *covers face with hands and moans* This is worse than I feared. Without Yoda there to defend him, I don't see how Obi-Wan is going to survive the trial. Unless...the journal?

Please post again soon! I'll ship you all the chocolate you could ever eat, just post soon. praying

Misplaced guilt or not, at least Obi-Wan has a couple of Master's looking out for him.

“Thank you Padawan Chun. It seems that I think as you do and made the mistake of disagreeing with Master Yoda. Perhaps together, we could show Master Yoda the true Obi-Wan Kenobi,” offered the Jedi.

Grrrrr, why am I not surprised those two are teaming up?

Valairy_Scot: I've run out of superlatives...I just wish you'd get the tension over eventually before I have a nervous breakdown on Qui and Obi's behalf.

Now you know how I feel when I'm reading "What the Heart Hides". wink I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens to our beloved Obi!

Thank you so much for reading! I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate your support and encouragement.

bek: And I agree, the tension is almost unbearable. Which means your writing is superb! blush Thank you!

Obi-Wan's anguish is clearly felt. I hope his connection to the force returns now that the drugs are leaving his system. And what will he think about the Council wanting to invade his mind? I can imagine that Qui-Gon will have quite a bit to say about that.

That would be a safe bet. Qui-Gon will not be at all happy with the Council!

JazzFox: Thank you so much! hugs I'm glad you're enjoying the story!

ratna: "You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villany.... than right here in the JEDI TEMPLE????"

grin So it seems. Thanks so much for reading! I thoroughly enjoyed your replies!

Tatooine_Ghost: Thank you so much! I'll be more than happy to add you to the list!

Qui-Gina-Jinn: Thanks for the PMs and sorry for not replying sooner, but have been away for the last week.

You're welcome and no problem. Glad to have you back! Thank you so much for reading! hugs

Fifilla: but I absolutely don't like the fact that Bruck in now in league with Plo Koon and that Yoda is no longer involved in Obi-Wan's case

It doesn't bode well for Obi, that's for certain! Thanks so much for reading. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Nienna_Narmolanya: Please post again soon! I'll ship you all the chocolate you could ever eat, just post soon

drooling Chocolate? Yippee! Okay, I should have the next post sometime tomorrow. Thank you so much!

Healer_Leona: Bruck and Plo Koon will cause plenty of trouble for Obi and Qui! Thanks so much for reading!

Gkilkenny: Maybe Yoda should zap them all, and he and Qui-Gon should take Obi-Wan away from the lunatics in the Temple.

Now there's a thought! thinking

I told you I was tense. Please ease my stress and let some one tell the truth.

You might want to practice some meditation techniques to help with your stress level. wink Thanks so much for reading!

Thank you to all those who continue to read this story. The next post will hopefully be up tomorrow sometime.

I am trying to decide if this is good or bad that Master Yoda has been taken off of this case. I hope Mace knows what he is doing. My thinking is that with Yoda off the case, he can stop with the pretense of being neutral and really start helping Obi-Wan. I hope that's right, and that this doesn't mean more trouble for our already troubled master, padawan pair.

Part 8

Obi-Wan opened his eyes to find his master still sitting by his side. He could see the lines of exhaustion and worry that were evident in Qui-Gon’s distinguished features. The teen knew that his master’s concern for him was the reason for the Jedi’s fatigue.

The padawan did not like feeling that he was responsible for the weariness that plagued his master. Obi-Wan wanted to apologize to Qui-Gon, but didn’t trust himself to speak. He was using what little strength he had to try and hide the pain that wanted to consume him.

Obi-Wan winced at the muscle spasms that seemed to set every nerve on fire. The youth didn’t want to worry Qui-Gon more that he already had, so he forced himself to tamp down the agony that burned within him. Obi-Wan’s efforts proved to be futile as he felt his master’s hand on his shoulder. The apprentice couldn’t help but notice the kindness in Qui-Gon’s voice when the Jedi softly called his name.

“Obi-Wan? Obi-Wan, I know you’re hurting.”

The apprentice knew that he could not lie to his master. Obi-Wan nodded as he gazed at Qui-Gon with tears in his eyes. The youth’s voice was barely audible when he was finally able to speak.

“Force, it hurts!” Obi-Wan did not attempt to stop the steady flow of tears that cascaded down his cheeks. “When will…it be…over? I thought I was…getting better.”

The padawan felt Qui-Gon brush away his tears. Obi-Wan pressed his cheek into the Jedi’s large hand, once again drawing comfort from his master’s gentle touch. This was something that the young man realized he would have to get used to. He had to remember that Master Jinn would not hurt him. Obi-Wan knew that he was supposed to trust Qui-Gon, but trust was something that did not come easily for the teen.

Obi-Wan inhaled sharply as his muscles continued to violently twitch. He closed his eyes in an effort to block out the pain. The youth felt Qui-Gon grasp his trembling hand as the Jedi tried to comfort the apprentice.

“I know it doesn’t seem possible right now, but you are getting better. Soon you will be able to go home and then we can concentrate on your training.”

“Home? Sometimes it seems like…that day will…never come.”

“It will, my Padawan. It will come sooner than you think,” the Jedi master promised.

Still holding Obi-Wan’s hand, the Jedi reached for his comm unit with his other hand and requested Master Nathe’s presence. Satisfied that the healer was coming, Qui-Gon turned his attention back to his padawan.

“Master Nathe is on his way,” the Jedi informed the youth. “Can I get you anything?”

“No. Thank you…for staying with me.”

“Where else would I be?”

“I’m sure that you have better…things to do than waste your time…sitting here with me.”

“There is no place that I would rather be than here with you. This is where I belong.” Qui-Gon smiled at his apprentice, hoping that Obi-Wan would believe his words. The Jedi saw the teen nod as his body was wracked by another set of spasms. He felt his padawan squeeze his hand as Obi-Wan struggled with the pain that coursed through him.

“I’m here, Obi-Wan. Don’t fight the pain. Accept it,” Qui-Gon urged.

“I can’t. It hurts too much! Make it stop! Please Master, make it stop!”

“I wish I could.” Qui-Gon wanted nothing more than to call upon the Force and take the boy’s agony upon himself. Knowing that this was not an option, the Jedi moved closer to his padawan and gathered the youth in his strong arms. Qui-Gon could feel the teen’s muscles spasm as he held him close. The Jedi master breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Master Healer Nathe and Master Ru’tan enter the room.

“I’m glad you’re here. You’ve got to do something for him. He is in so much pain.” Qui-Gon continued to embrace his hurting padawan as Master Nathe prepared to give the youth a hypo spray.

“What’s that?” the Jedi inquired.

“It’s a muscle relaxant,” answered the Master Healer. “It should help him.” The healer injected Obi-Wan with the medicine and then studied the young man as he began to relax in his master’s arms.

“The spasms won’t completely stop, but they won’t be as intense. He should be able to manage the pain better,” informed Healer Nathe.

“He is getting better, right?” Qui-Gon had told the boy that he was on the road to recovery. He could not bear the thought that he had lied to his apprentice.

“Yes, Qui-Gon. I promise you that Obi-Wan is getting better. We’ll keep him on the muscle relaxant to help him through the spasms. By tomorrow, you will be able to see a big difference in your padawan. He will be very weak and exhausted, but he will be through the worst of it.”

“Thank you, Master Nathe. I appreciate everything you’ve done for Obi-Wan.”

“You’re welcome. Now, what can I do to convince you to rest?”

“Nothing. I will not leave his side again,” Qui-Gon stated.

“Master Ru’tan will stay with him.”

“No, thank you. I will stay with my padawan.”

“Very well,” Nathe said. “I will be back in to check on Obi-Wan in a couple of hours. Call me if you need anything before then.”

Master Nathe didn’t even know why he tried to persuade the obstinate Jedi master to rest. He and Master Ru’tan quietly left Qui-Gon to tend to his apprentice. He had the feeling that when he returned, he would find the Jedi still cradling Obi-Wan, reassuring the teen that everything would be all right.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Master Yoda had retreated to his private quarters to meditate on what had just occurred in the council chambers. He was frustrated that he was so easily dismissed from the proceedings. He had never denied his fondness towards Padawan Kenobi. There was something special about the boy that had drawn the ancient master to him ever since Obi-Wan’s days in the crèche.
Obi-Wan’s light in the Force had always burned brightly. The crèche masters had always said that the Force seem to wrap itself around the young boy, destining him for great things. Yoda thought that was perhaps the time that he began to take a personal interest in Obi-Wan. Great expectations had been placed upon the youth at a young age when it was discovered that his midichlorian count was excessively high.
The tiny master could sense the great burden that was being placed upon Obi-Wan’s shoulders. He took it upon himself to become the boy’s protector. This was a role that he had taken seriously and both he and Obi-Wan had been criticized by others, including many Jedi masters. However, his role as protector did not save the young man from the abuse that he had endured under the tutelage of Master Elad.
When Yoda had learned that Elad was intending to take Obi-Wan as his padawan learner, he had attempted to coerce Qui-Gon into coming back to the Temple. At the time, Qui-Gon was still feeling the sting of betrayal from his former apprentice Xanatos, and was adamant about not taking a padawan. After Obi-Wan became Master Elad’s padawan leaner, things began to change between the youth and the tiny master. Their contact became limited due to Master Elad’s insistence that the padawan keep his distance from Master Yoda.
Yoda lived with the regret that he did not do more to help Obi-Wan the past several years. Realizing that he could not live in the past, the Jedi master was determined to help the teen as he faced his future. The Force had shown Yoda that Obi-Wan’s path would not be easy, but the Jedi master would make sure that he was not alone.
Picking up his gimer stick, he slowly walked towards his door. Yoda needed to see Obi-Wan and inform Qui-Gon of what had happened. He would not allow the Council to hurt the apprentice any further—Obi-Wan Kenobi had experienced enough pain to last a lifetime.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Bant and Garen sat in the cafeteria eating their mid day meal. They had been making plans for what they wanted to do when Obi-Wan was feeling better. The two padawans had not been allowed to see their friend while he was going through withdrawals. Fortunately, they had been the ones to stumble upon Obi-Wan in the empty corridor before Bruck could hurt him any further. Bant and Garen spent a short time with him before Master Jinn had arrived, and now they understood why they had not been allowed in the healer’s wing. It was difficult seeing their best friend in so much pain and not being able to help him.

Bant pushed back her tray indicating that she was through with her meal. “Maybe Master Jinn will let Obi go into the city to the museum. There’s supposed to be a display of…”

“Obi’s not going to want to go to some stuffy old museum,” Garen said.

“How do you know?”

“I just know. Besides, it will be a while before he’s allowed to leave the Temple. Remember, he’s on probation.”

“I know,” Bant replied. “I just want him to be able to have some fun. It’s been too long since Obi has laughed.”

“Mind if I sit here?”

The two friends looked up to discover Siri standing at the end of the table. Garen slid over to allow the padawan to sit beside him.

“Thanks,” Siri replied. “I couldn’t help but overhear part of your conversation. How is Obi-Wan doing?”

“He’s getting better. It’s just going to take some time,” the Mon Calamarian answered. “Why do you ask? You’ve never seemed too worried about Obi before.”

“Of course I’m concerned. I’ve just been hearing rumors and wanted to know for myself how he was doing. I figured that if anyone knew, it would be the two of you.”

“Rumors? What kind of rumors?” Garen inquired.

“Depends on who you talk to,” Siri replied as she took a drink of her juice. “I’ve heard that Obi-Wan tried to kill Master Nathe and then ran away. Then there’s the rumor that the only reason that he’s getting to stay in the Jedi Order is because of Master Yoda. I’ve also heard that Obi-Wan lied about the involvement of the other Jedi.”

“Who’s been spreading these lies?” Bant demanded to know. “You shouldn’t listen to rumors, Siri.”

“I didn’t say I believed them. I just thought as his friends that you should know what you’re up against. Most of the other padawans want to keep their distance from Obi-Wan. He’s going to need his friends now more than ever.”

“Thanks for letting us know,” Garen said, rising to put his tray away. “We better go Bant or we’ll be late for class. Thanks again, Siri.”

“You’re welcome.”

“I always got the feeling that you never really liked Obi,” Bant said as she stood to join Garen.

“I guess you were wrong.” Siri smiled at Bant and Garen. Picking up her tray, the blond apprentice moved to another table to join some of the other padawan learners who were still eating.

“I guess I was,” agreed Bant. After putting her tray away, the two padawans headed towards the lift. Rounding the corner, Bant nearly ran into Garen, who had abruptly stopped in front of her. “Garen, what are you doing?”

Bant was annoyed when Garen didn’t answer her. She started to nudge her friend, but then froze when she saw Bruck Chun standing in front of them, blocking their path.

“What have we here? If it isn’t Oafy-Wan’s pathetic little friends.”

“What do you want, Bruck?” Garen asked. He did not want another altercation with the padawan, but he had decided long ago that he would not be intimidated by the apprentice.

“I was just headed to the cafeteria,” Bruck replied. “So tell me, how is Oafy-Wan?”

“His name is Obi-Wan and it’s time that you learned it.”

“I’m already painfully familiar with that name. I just hope that one day you’ll see that your friend is nothing but a waste of time.”

“The only thing that’s a waste of our time is standing here talking to you,” Bant interjected. “Let’s go, Garen.”

The two padawans stepped around Bruck and continued on their journey. They knew that Bruck was watching them as they walked down the hall, but chose to ignore him. When they finally looked back over their shoulders, Bruck was gone. Bant and Garen looked at each other, realizing that Siri had been right. Obi-Wan was going to need his friends.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Convinced that Obi-Wan was finally asleep, Qui-Gon gently laid the youth back on the bed. He quietly stood so he could stretch his own aching muscles. The Jedi master reached down to pull the covers over his apprentice when he saw Obi-Wan’s journal had slipped out of the pocket of his sleep tunic. Qui-Gon picked it up and examined the binding. He knew that in between the well-worn cover, some of his apprentice’s deepest secrets were buried.
The Jedi sat down in the chair and held the book in his large hands. He had told his apprentice that he wouldn’t read it. Qui-Gon wanted to respect Obi-Wan’s privacy, but he was also aware of the fact that he could learn more about his padawan. The master had truly believed that he had only been given a glimpse of what Obi-Wan’s life had been like.
~If I read this and Obi-Wan finds out, he will never forgive me. So, why is the Force urging me to read his journal? There must be something in there that will help Obi-Wan.~
Qui-Gon opened the book to the first page and read the inscription. “To Obi-Wan, child of my heart.” He wasn’t sure who had signed it because half of the page had been torn out of the journal. The Jedi master turned the page and studied the date of the entry. It was approximately two weeks after he had become Master Elad’s padawan.
~Do I continue? The Force is telling me that I must do this. I must obey the will of the Force.~
The Jedi master began to read the contents of the first entry.
This is the first time that I’ve been able to write in my journal since becoming Master Elad’s apprentice. It seems that the last couple of weeks have been filled with learning rules and trying to understand what is expected of me. My master says that I have a lot to learn. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m even worthy to call myself a padawan…
Qui-Gon looked up from the journal to find Obi-Wan staring at him with pain filled eyes. The Jedi master forced himself to look into the cerulean orbs, knowing that he may have hurt his padawan far worse than Elad ever did. Before he could try and explain his actions to the teen, Obi-Wan had already asked the question to which Qui-Gon did not have an answer.
“Why?”
The Jedi master closed the journal and laid it on the nightstand. He wasn’t sure how to reply to the simple question that had been posed by Obi-Wan. Once again, Qui-Gon sought the Force for guidance as his apprentice patiently waited for the answer he deserved.
Gah - promise ME!
I have to wonder at the Force guiding Qui-Gon to do something that Obi-Wan will feel as a betrayal. It'll be for the best, I'm sure, but at the cost of distrust and pain - more story to read, right?
The Force'd better have a very good reason for wanting Qui-Gon to read it - and it'd better tell him and convince Obi-Wan too! Though, I'm glad he's reading it, even if he should have got permission first - *wonders if he would have got that*
Great chapter! I'm glad Qui-Gon is there for his Padawan...
Force! How is Qui-gon going to explain this one to Obi-wan? If Yoda tried to help explain, would that be cheating the Master/Padawan relationship building time? Gah... it's hard to wait for the next update. Keep up the good work Jedidas3, and thanks for writing!
Oh no! More angst for Obi and Qui! worried I can't decide whether Qui-Gon was in the right or not. He can't go against the will of the Force and I'm becoming more and more convinced that the journal holds the key to proving Obi-Wan's innocence, but Qui may have just destroyed what trust he'd built with Obi-Wan. *moans*
“I was just headed to the cafeteria,” Bruck replied. “So tell me, how is Oafy-Wan?”
“His name is Obi-Wan and it’s time that you learned it.”
Oh, score! tongue I just love the Garen-Bant stuff. I guess I'm still a little more in touch with teenage angst. blush wink And you introduced Siri! Coolness.
Lovely, jedidas! applause And more chocolate is on the way.
