Qui-Gina-Jinn: Perfect update.
Thank you so much.
Am happy that Obi-Wan is going to let Qui-Gon read the journal!
I think a lot of people are happy about that--except for Obi-Wan of course.
Magier: I would just like to see Bruck try to get the journal away from Qui-Gon.
Bruck's conniving mind is already working on a plan.
Valairy_Scot: For some reason, this mysterious man in this chapter makes me think of Xanatos.
How interesting...
Fifilla: That was exactly what I thought!
The fact is I know you very well. You see, I was once very much like you. Young, full of anger, competitive, and always seeking for something more. Especially that sentence reminds me of Xanatos.
Great minds must think alike.
dimyavie: And hopefully Bruck won't be causing too much trouble in the future!
Don't count on it!
It's good to hear from you! Thanks for reading.
ratna: You're so right...Yoda definitely rocks!
Somehow I don't think this is what they mean by "Get thee behind me Satan" ...
I don't either!
No worries, mate, intention is everything!
It's a good thing it is, especially since I didn't get to post before the holiday! Thanks for being so patient!
JazzFox: The evil dude's interference is annoying though, to say the least. He even does the bad-guy-monologue thing... he gets really creepy, really fast, and is the perfect dripping-darkness kind of dramatic character for this story. He's a nice foil to Qui-gon's personality -- good job.
Thank you!
Gkilkenny: Don't worry, Qui-Gon will begin to read the journal in the next post. Of course, I can't promise how far he will get...
bek: The kid just can't wrap his heart and mind around the fact that someone really does care and can be truly trusted with all aspects of who he is.
Trust is a big issue right now with Obi-Wan and he has a difficult time with actually allowing himself to trust anybody. Of course, that just means more Obi angst and if you couldn't tell, I Obi angst!
Thanks for reading and more is on the way.
XANI: Thanks for being patient. I had wanted to post before the holiday weekend, but it didn't work out that way. Hopefully I'll have the next one up late today or early tomorrow.
Healer_Leona: I have to agree with you about Bruck! As always, thanks for reading--it means a lot to me.
Nienna_Narmolanya: I wonder what's in there. If Obi-Wan is that fearful of Qui-Gon finding out, maybe I don't want to know...
The next post will give you a little peek into the journal.
I really don't like that Bruck's plotting to use Garen and Bant to do his dirty work. Just like Bruck. Always hiding his misdeeds behind someone else's name.
You said it!
JediKaren: What a cool song! That perfectly describes Obi! Thanks so much for sharing!
I'm so sorry that I didn't get to post before the holiday weekend, but that darn real life got in the way. I will have the next post up later this evening or early tomorrow, depending on when I have time to proof it once again. Thank you for being so patient and continuing to read this story. I can't tell you how much it means to me to have such faithful readers. Thank you again!

Sorry for the delay. Darth Real Life got in the way! Here is the next post. I hope you enjoy it! Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.
Part 11
Qui-Gon Jinn sat by his padawan’s side, holding Obi-Wan’s hand as sleep finally claimed the young man. In his other hand, he held the journal that belonged to the teen. The Jedi master could not begin to fathom what secrets the contents of the small book could contain that filled his apprentice’s heart with such a sense of despair. He watched the rise and fall of the boy’s chest and the now occasional tremor that coursed through Obi-Wan’s body. Qui-Gon observed that the spasms seemed to be less frequent, giving him hope that Master Nathe’s prediction was correct in that the youth was getting better.
Easing his hand out of Obi-Wan’s loose grip, Qui-Gon quietly moved to the chair that sat beside the bed. The Jedi studied the journal in his hand, trying to decide what he should do. He knew that Obi-Wan had told him to read it, but the master was now reluctant to do so. The Jedi master was confident that there was nothing in the journal that would change his feelings towards the boy.
The Jedi sighed as he opened to the first entry. He had already read most of that page, but decided to go ahead and read it again. Qui-Gon had not noticed how beautiful his apprentice’s penmanship was. His long fingers lightly brushed over the words, paying attention to the detail that was given to each letter. Smiling, the master glanced up at the youth to make sure he was still asleep.
“There’s so much about you I don’t know,” Qui-Gon whispered. Satisfied that the teen was sleeping soundly, the Jedi returned his attention to the journal and began to read.
This is the first time that I’ve been able to write in my journal since becoming Master Elad’s apprentice. It seems that the last couple of weeks have been filled with learning rules and trying to understand what is expected of me. My master says that I have a lot to learn. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m even worthy to call myself a padawan.
Master Elad tells me that I am fortunate that he took me as a padawan learner. I guess I am. I don’t think another Jedi master would have taken me with all my problems. I must try harder to do what he tells me to do and not mess up. I have to do better or I’ll end up in the Agri-Corps.
Qui-Gon turned to the next entry. The Jedi could tell from reading the first page that Obi-Wan’s insecurities were manifested in his fear of failing Master Elad. The boy wanted to be a Jedi Knight and he was already considering himself to be a failure. How could Elad have inflicted that much doubt in the teen’s mind in such a short period of time? Qui-Gon continued to read the next page that was dated two days later.
Today I got my test back in my Galactic History class. I ended up getting the highest score in class, even though I missed one question. I thought Master Elad would be pleased but he wasn’t. He told me that if I had studied harder that I would have made a perfect score. I tried to tell my master that this was a hard test, but he wouldn’t listen. He made me so mad that I yelled at him. I didn’t mean to, it just happened. Anyway, I’ve spent the last couple of days in deep meditation with Master Elad. I don’t like doing that because it makes my head hurt. I’m too tired to write anymore. Maybe I will feel better in the morning.
The Jedi master looked up from his reading when he heard Obi-Wan stir. After a few seconds, Qui-Gon heard his padawan lightly snoring, indicating that he was still asleep. He closed his eyes and released his feelings of anger to the Force. The Jedi didn’t understand how a master could belittle a padawan to the point that the youth’s sense of self worth would be destroyed.
Allowing the Force to surround him, Qui-Gon released a cleansing breath and then continued to study the journal. The next entry was dated a week later.
I haven’t felt like writing the past few days. I’ve been busy doing some training with Master Elad. He’s been teaching me how a Jedi learns to accept pain. I’m having a hard time with this. Master Elad is disappointed. He thinks that there is something wrong with me and has asked Master Healer Letni to examine me. If my master only knew how hard I’m trying to please him.
The entry was shorter than the previous ones, but was filled with the pain-filled cries of a boy who wanted nothing more than to be accepted for who he was. Qui-Gon began to thumb through the next few entries and discovered that the dates were sporadic for about the first year. From the second year on, Obi-Wan seemed to be more faithful in writing in the journal as his entries began to become more detailed.
Today is my one year anniversary of being Master Elad’s apprentice. I’m supposed to be using this time for reflection, but I simply don’t want to. I don’t want to remember the past year. I’ve done nothing but become a huge embarrassment to my master. He tries to teach me things but I don’t seem to understand them.
My head is aching and I’m sore all over. The lessons to teach me to handle pain haven’t been working like Master Elad thought they should, so he now restrains me. I thought by now that I would stop screaming, but I haven’t. I can’t believe that I could hurt so much. I have another session tomorrow. I think that I would be able to take the pain if Master would only stay out of my head.
My master said that we would be leaving on a mission in two days and that I had to be ready. I asked him what he meant and Master Elad reminded me that it was not my place to ask questions. I should know better but it seems like that I never learn.
I hear Master Healer Letni entering our quarters. I don’t like him, especially when he gives me those shots. I’m not sure why I have to take that medicine. Healer Letni says it will help me, but I’m not so sure.
Qui-Gon slowly turned the page. He knew that the more he learned about his apprentice’s former life, the harder it was to tamp down the anger at the injustices that Obi-Wan had needlessly suffered. The Jedi noticed the next entry was difficult to read as if the youth had been unable to grasp the writing stylus. The elegant script of the previous pages had become almost illegible. Qui-Gon could feel his padawan’s anguish as he read the teen’s scattered thoughts.
Tomorrow I have to leave on a mission. I don’t want to go. I can’t do this. I can’t think. I don’t want to go. The Force hates me—it no longer hears me.
Something is wrong with me. My master says that I’m not worthy to be a Jedi. He’s right. I just wish I could think. My head hurts so bad. Master Elad was trying to get rid of my dark thoughts. It didn’t work. I’m so tired.
The Jedi closed the journal and quietly sat as he watched Obi-Wan sleep. Qui-Gon could see the lines of worry and fatigue that had formed around the youth’s eyes and across his forehead. Leaning forward, the master reached out and gently caressed the boy’s face with his calloused fingers.
“You’re far too young to look so old,” he whispered. Qui-Gon pulled back his hand when the youth slightly shifted in his sleep so he didn’t disturb Obi-Wan’s well deserved slumber. The Jedi silently marveled at the young man before him. The master was convinced that the Force definitely had a purpose for his padawan. The teen had written that the Force hated him and as far as the master knew, Obi-Wan still believed that.
Qui-Gon was more determined to show his apprentice the true ways of the Force. He would look forward to the day when Obi-Wan’s light shone once again. The young man would see that he was destined to become a Jedi—perhaps one of the greatest within the Jedi Order. Qui-Gon smiled at the still form of the padawan and sat back in his chair.
The Jedi master opened the journal and proceeded to read some more. There wasn’t another entry until approximately a week later. It was evident that Obi-Wan had just returned from the mission that he had been dreading and things had not gone well. Unlike the previous entry, the youth’s handwriting was legible, but the words that had been written were full of anger and desperation. Qui-Gon found himself unable to read past the first line on the page.
I hate my master…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Padawan Bruck Chun sat in the common area of Master Ki-Adi Mundi’s quarters. The Jedi master had been called to meet with Master Windu and had left Bruck alone to complete his assignments for his classes. The apprentice had found it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand as his thoughts continued to drift back to his meeting with the mysterious man earlier that day.
He had been working on a plan to get Obi-Wan’s journal and now, all he had to do was to implement it. Bruck had to convince Bant and Garen that it was in their friend’s best interest that the journal just simply disappear. However, they would never believe anything that he said, so the apprentice knew that he had to bring in a neutral party.
Bruck smiled as he quickly stood up, dropping the data pad that he had been staring at for the last hour. The padawan put on his robe after he palmed open the door and briskly walked down the hall towards the lift. The car finally stopped and the teen entered the vacant lift. He smiled to himself as he was taken to the level that contained the training salles. It was there that he would find the perfect pawn to carry out his plan—Siri Tachi.
As he exited the lift, he walked down the corridor towards the training room that Siri preferred. She was always here in the evening time, practicing and perfecting her technique. Bruck knew that she had a secret crush on Kenobi and that he would be able to use that bit of knowledge to his advantage. Leaning against the wall, he watched the beautiful padawan as she completed the difficult kata that she had been executing. As she powered down her saber, Bruck stepped forward, applauding the young girl’s efforts.
“Very nice, Siri.” Bruck saw the scowl come across Siri’s face as she replaced her lightsaber on her belt and then took a towel and wiped the sweat from her face.
“What do you want, Bruck?” she asked.
“Nothing,” he replied. “I was just coming down here to get a little extra practice in and ended up watching you instead.”
“Well, I’m through and now I’m leaving.” Siri walked over to a nearby bench and picked up her robe.
“Going to see Obi-Wan?” Bruck smiled as Siri visibly tense. He knew that he had struck a nerve within the young girl.
“No, I’m not,” she snapped. “He’s not allowed to have visitors just yet. You know that, so why don’t you tell me why you’re really here and what you want.”
“I don’t want anything. I thought that since you had such an interest in Obi-Wan, you might want to know the latest.”
“I don’t have an interest in Obi-Wan. I just hate to see anybody go through what he went through.”
“So, you feel sorry for him?” Bruck inquired.
“You’re wasting my time, Bruck.” Siri put on her robe and headed towards the exit. She stopped just outside the doorway as Bruck called out to her.
“I just thought you would want to know about what’s going to happen to Obi-Wan--but I guess I was wrong.” Bruck had to take a step back when Siri whirled around and glared at him.
“Why are you so worried about what’s going to happen to him? I thought you hated Obi-Wan.”
“I don’t hate him. Hate is of the dark side. I’ve come to realize that my dislike of Obi-Wan was nothing more than pure jealousy. I know that if I do not release these feelings that it will hinder my training. I want to try and be his friend, but that will take time. I thought that if I came to you with this information that it would prove my intentions. I found out something today and I know that if the Council has their way, Obi-Wan will be dismissed.”
“No, he won’t,” Siri countered. “The Council already made their decision. Master Jinn will take over Obi-Wan’s training.”
“Not after they get their hands on Obi-Wan’s journal. Evidently, whatever is in that book is going to cause a lot of trouble for him.”
“I don’t believe you.” Siri stated. “How would you even know about this?”
“I overheard Master Ki-Adi talking with Master Windu. They are going to go ask for the journal tomorrow morning.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
“I just thought that you would want to know. I would have told Bant and Garen, but they would never listen to me.”
“You’re right about that. Of course, I’m not sure why I’m listening to you.” Siri began to pace back and forth, replaying in her mind all that Bruck had said. “I need to talk to Bant and Garen about this.”
“Fine,” Bruck replied. “I hope you three can come up with a plan. By the way, we never had this conversation. If Master Ki-Adi learns that I eavesdropped on a private conversation, I’ll be in serious trouble.”
Without waiting for a reply, Bruck left Siri alone in the training salle. As soon as he was out of sight, an evil smile danced across his lips. “That was too easy,” he said to himself.
“You’re quite the manipulator, Padawan Chun.”
Bruck quickly turned at the sound of the familiar voice. “Master Plo Koon. I didn’t realize…”
“I know you didn’t. That’s why I’m a master and you’re just an apprentice. So, why don’t you tell me about your conversation with Padawan Tachi.” Plo Koon motioned for Bruck to join him as they slowly walked down the corridor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Siri left the training salle, still in deep thought about what Bruck had revealed to her. She was having a difficult time sorting through her conflicting emotions. Siri had never trusted Bruck and she didn’t feel like she should now. However, there was also the possibility that he was actually telling the truth. As she slowly made her way down the hallway, her thoughts turned to the young man called Obi-Wan Kenobi.
~Maybe Bruck is right and I do feel sorry for Obi-Wan. Maybe it’s not pity I feel for him, but something else. Perhaps my old feelings for him are coming back. What if Bruck is right? Think Siri! I need to find Bant and Garen and talk to them. But what if they don’t believe me? Force, I don’t know what to do!~
She found herself in the healer’s wing, standing outside the door to Obi-Wan’s room. Siri jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to startle you, Padawan.” Master Ru’tan said. “You look lost.”
“I was…I was just wondering how Obi-Wan, I mean Padawan Kenobi was,” Siri stammered.
“I believe he is doing better. Are you one of Obi-Wan’s friends?” The soul healer knew that the padawan had several companions who often inquired about his progress, but she didn’t remember seeing this particular young girl before.
“Yes...I guess…I,” Siri sighed in disgust at being unable to produce a single coherent thought.
“I was just about to go in and see him. If you promise to stay out of the way, you can come in with me.”
“I promise,” Siri replied. She was grateful that the soul healer seemed to understand her embarrassment and simply chose to ignore it. She quietly followed Miranda into Obi-Wan’s room.
Siri’s eyes widened as she saw Master Jinn reading something that could possibly be the journal that Bruck had described. She saw Qui-Gon lay the journal on the nightstand beside Obi-Wan’s bed as he rose to greet the soul healer. Never taking her eyes off the journal, she listened intently to the conversation between Master Jinn and Master Ru’tan.
“How’s he doing?” the soul healer inquired.
“Obi-Wan is resting now. He seems to be getting better physically.”
“I see you’re reading the journal,” observed Miranda.
“He actually gave me permission. I’m not sure that I want to read it now,” the Jedi master admitted.
“Why not?”
“I don’t know. I can’t explain it. The Force is willing me to, but I know how much pain I’m causing Obi-Wan by reading it.”
“Sometimes the choices we have to make are not easy,” said Master Ru’tan.
“I know.” Qui-Gon glanced over the soul healer’s shoulder at the blond padawan standing behind her. “Padawan Tachi, it’s nice to see you again.”
Siri bowed to the Jedi master. “Thank you, Master Jinn. Master Ru’tan said it was all right if I came in. I was just wondering how Obi-Wan was.”
“I will tell him you came by. I didn’t realize that the two of you were friends.”
“We’re not best friends, but we are friends.” Siri wasn’t sure if she were trying to assure herself or Qui-Gon of that fact.
“He should be up to receiving visitors in a day or so. It will do him good to see some fresh faces. I’m sure that he is tired of looking at mine.” Qui-Gon smiled at Siri, hoping that his relaxed manner would calm her apparent nervousness.
“I had better go…”
“Padawan Tachi,” Master Ru’tan began. “I was wondering if I might ask a favor.”
“I guess so,” Siri reluctantly answered.
“I need to borrow Master Jinn for just a moment. Would you mind staying with Obi-Wan?”
“No, Master Ru’tan. I don’t mind if it is all right with Master Jinn.”
“I…of course,” Qui-Gon replied. “As long as it won’t take too long.”
“It won’t,” the healer promised, motioning for Qui-Gon to follow her into the area just outside of Obi-Wan’s room.
Siri watched the two masters as they left the room. As soon as the doors closed, she slowly made her way to Obi-Wan’s side. Making sure that he was asleep, she carefully reached for the journal. Siri quickly jerked her hands back when she saw Obi-Wan staring at her with questioning eyes.
“What are you doing?” Obi-Wan’s voice was hoarse, but it did not mask the teen’s cultured tone.
Siri sat down in the chair beside the bed and stared at the young man in the bed. A myriad of thoughts ran through the young girl’s mind. Forcing herself to find her center, Siri closed her eyes in an effort to organize her ideas into words. After a few seconds, she opened her eyes and met Obi-Wan’s piercing gaze. “We need to talk…”

Loved it. I loved the entries in the journal and how you made it seem that Obi was hopeful at first but with insecurities and how it went downhill from there.
Bruck is really good at twisting the truth and Siri fell for it. Oh, dear.
Loved this.

Caught...but maybe it'll be for the good and Siri will come to know that the journal's theft won't help Obi-Wan.
I look forward to their conversation.
Poor Obi. No young one should be belittled and made to feel incompetent as Obi was for so long.
I have to wonder, too, if Obi-Wan was forced to do something horrific - referencing back to a few chapters about the "blood on his hands." I have to wonder if he was referring to more than killing Elad , plus the reference to "humiliation."
I have little doubt that Obi-Wan did something "very bad" in his own mind - and have no doubt that whatever he did he was coerced into.

I hope he doesn't believe the lies that Bruck told Siri, that is, if she tells him. In any case, they won't get the journal will they?

Excellent
My anger at Bruck, reminds me, you wrote this chapter very well. I am seething that Siri could believe Bruck, although perhaps I am jumping the gun. Siri is not that stupid (hopefully)
I don't think their talk will help Obi.
I am panicking, your story is so intense, I look forward to seeing your name in my PM box, and cannot wait a moment to read the next chapter.

Well done! That smooth talking Bruck Chun really did a number there on Siri. I'm impressed with how well you wrote that scene, I find manipulative talking difficult to write... and difficult to get the other character to plausibly buy into. You did a great job!
Keep reading Qui-gon! It's sad, but read it anyway! *sigh* I hope Siri tells Obi-wan her conversation with Bruck... this is the perfect time for her to employ her habit of being blunt and brutally honest. And Obi-wan; man, for an Jedi that can't use the Force, he has an uncanny ability to catch people red-handed! I guess the Force kind of whispers to him anyway, either that or he's just super cool. Probably both.

Wonderful, jedidas! There was so much juicy material in this chapter. I loved it all.
I love how you wrote the journal entries. Very realistic, especially this one. The clipped sentences give us a peak at Obi-Wan's inner turmoil. I keep a journal and when I go back and reread previous entries, I notice that when I'm upset my sentences are shorter and my thoughts less coherent - just like this.
Bruck stoops to new lows! He is quite the manipulator. The way Plo Koon appeared out of nowhere was very disconcerting and I loved what he said about 'that's why I'm the master and you're the apprentice.' (Sorry if I misquoted!) Very creepy.
I feel so bad for Siri! She thinks she's helping Obi-Wan when really she's playing right into the dark man's hands. The ending scene was great when Obi-Wan found her trying to take the journal. Hopefully she tells him everything so the truth about Bruck's lie comes out in the open! And so Obi-Wan finally realizes her feelings toward him.
I guess I got a little...verbose with my reply. There were just so many nice things in this chapter I had to comment on. Great work! Keep it up!

No doubt the journal should how things had changed for the poor young man.
“I know you didn’t. That’s why I’m a master and you’re just an apprentice. So, why don’t you tell me about your conversation with Padawan Tachi.” Plo Koon motioned for Bruck to join him as they slowly walked down the corridor.
He'll probably think it's wonderful plan.
After a few seconds, she opened her eyes and met Obi-Wan’s piercing gaze. “We need to talk…”
Oh Siri, you don't know the half of it.

Hey, jedidas, thanks so much for the PM's, I'm sorry I haven't reviewed in a while! Curse my very limited internet time!
Anyway, I've read the story up to chapter 7, and I'm loving it so far!
Poor Obi-Wan! I'm so glad Qui is there for him, he's such a great Master.
I'm looking forward to cathing up with the rest of this later, I just wanted you to know I was still here and loving this story!

Oh, man, that journal is a heartbreaker. If I were Qui-Gon, I'd about want to exhume Elad just so I could wring his neck. Oh, wait a minute, he got cremated, so I guess no posthumous necktie party...... neway, good thing I'm not Qui-Gon...
Leaving Siri alone with Obi....dontcha just hate it when circumstances conspire in favor of the bad guys... Lucky our boy has hair-trigger nerves. I guess Elad's abusive "training" was good for something!
JazzFox: Thanks for your comments re my comments! Yes, I do love Merchant of Venice... and I'm a born quibbler.
JediKaren: Awesome song post!! very appropriate!
Great post, as always jedidas. You keep us all in suspenders!

dianethx: Loved it. I loved the entries in the journal and how you made it seem that Obi was hopeful at first but with insecurities and how it went downhill from there.
Bruck is really good at twisting the truth and Siri fell for it. Oh, dear.
Thank you, Master. Don't worry, Siri comes around!
Thank you again for all your support and encouragement!
Valairy_Scot: Poor Obi. No young one should be belittled and made to feel incompetent as Obi was for so long.
You are so right about that. He will have a difficult time overcoming this.
It does make you wonder, doesn't it? As always, thank you so much for reading. I can't tell you how much it means!
Tatooine_Ghost: Thank you!
bek: I hope he doesn't believe the lies that Bruck told Siri, that is, if she tells him. In any case, they won't get the journal will they?
Siri and Obi are going to have a nice, long talk. As for the bad guys not getting the journal, you'll have to wait and see!
Thanks so much for reading...now get back to work and update "Not Myself!" I'm waiting!
Gkilkenny: I am panicking, your story is so intense, I look forward to seeing your name in my PM box, and cannot wait a moment to read the next chapter.
What a nice thing to say! Well, the next post is on its way.
Fifilla: She WILL do the right thing! *waves hand and do Jedi mind trick on author*
You will have to read the next post and see if your mind trick worked!
JazzFox: Well done! That smooth talking Bruck Chun really did a number there on Siri. I'm impressed with how well you wrote that scene, I find manipulative talking difficult to write... and difficult to get the other character to plausibly buy into. You did a great job!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Nienna_Narmolanya: I love how you wrote the journal entries. Very realistic, especially this one. The clipped sentences give us a peak at Obi-Wan's inner turmoil. They do deserve each other, don't they?
I feel so bad for Siri! She thinks she's helping Obi-Wan when really she's playing right into the dark man's hands. The ending scene was great when Obi-Wan found her trying to take the journal. Hopefully she tells him everything so the truth about Bruck's lie comes out in the open! And so Obi-Wan finally realizes her feelings toward him.
You better get to the next post immediately! I think you'll be happy.

No problem! I love reading your comments! Thank you so much for your kind words!
Healer_Leona: Don't worry...Siri and Obi will have a nice, long talk. Lots will be said!
Bastet: Hey, jedidas, thanks so much for the PM's, I'm sorry I haven't reviewed in a while! Curse my very limited internet time!
Don't worry about it, I completely understand. Glad you checked in...it's great to hear from you. I hope you continue to enjoy the story!

You could say that. He's had to have those hair trigger nerves on more than one ocassion! Thanks so much for reading!
Thank you to all who continue to read this story. I hope you enjoy the next post!
Part 12
Obi-Wan sat up in bed and waited patiently for Siri to begin. It was evident to the teen that the blonde padawan was struggling with what she wanted to say. He found her hesitancy disturbing, especially since Siri was one of the most direct people that he had ever met.
Deciding that he would have to be the one to initiate the conversation, Obi-Wan cleared his throat and asked, “What do we need to talk about?” His eyes widened in fear as Siri picked up his journal from the nightstand.
“This is what we need to talk about,” she replied as she handed it to Obi-Wan.
“My journal?” Obi-Wan took the journal from Siri and placed it under his pillow. “How do you even know about my journal? I never told you that I kept one.”
Obi-Wan saw her eyes narrow into an icy stare, frustration emanating from within her. “I know you didn’t tell me,” Siri snapped. “There were a lot of things that you never told me. You just sent me away.”
Siri did not try and hide the resentment and hurt in her voice. She had never completely understood why Obi-Wan had suddenly refused to see her anymore. Their deepening friendship had been relegated to becoming mere acquaintances.
“I can’t do this now, Siri. Please don’t ask me to explain my actions to you,” Obi-Wan pleaded. “Maybe one day I’ll be able to, but I can’t right now.”
“Why not? Were you afraid of what was happening between us?”
“Siri, please don’t do this.”
“Why not?” she demanded. Before Obi-Wan could reply, Siri held her hand up to silence the young man. “You’re right. Now is not the time. That’s not why I’m here.”
“Why are you here?”
“Just hear me out, Kenobi,” Siri began. “The Council knows about your journal and they are going to use it to dismiss you from the Order.”
Siri could see the confusion spread across the boy’s pale face. “What are you talking about? Why would the Council be interested in my journal?” he wondered out loud. Obi-Wan could not believe that the Jedi Council would want to subject themselves to the horrors that were hidden in the pages of the small book.
“I don’t know,” Siri softly answered. “I just don’t want you to have to leave the Order. You’re a good person Obi-Wan, and you deserve the opportunity to be a Jedi Knight.”
“So, what were you going to do with the journal?” Obi-Wan asked.
“I don’t know. I was going to destroy it somehow. I still will if you want me to.”
Siri and Obi-Wan sat for a few moments in silence. The only sound that could be heard was the monitors as they measured and recorded the young man’s vitals. Other than a few classes, Obi-Wan had not physically been this close to the beautiful apprentice since the day that he had told her that he could not see her anymore. Both of the padawans knew that attachment was forbidden, but neither could deny the feelings that they had developed for one another.
They had managed to keep their relationship a secret from everyone, until the time that Master Elad had managed to completely destroy Obi-Wan’s shields. The master had forced his padawan to end any contact with Siri. Elad had sworn that the girl would be the one to pay the consequences if Obi-Wan didn’t obey him. So, Padawan Kenobi had broken Siri Tachi’s heart.
Obi-Wan shook away the fog of memories that had shrouded his mind. “How did you find out about the Council wanting to read my journal?” he inquired.
“Uh…well Bruck told me.” Siri ignored the look of disbelief on Obi-Wan’s face as she quickly tried to defend her statement. “He said that he overheard Master Ki-Adi and Master Mace talking and…”
“You actually believed Bruck Chun?” Obi-Wan asked incredulously. He buried his head in the palms of his hands as his body began to shake. He felt Siri’s gentle touch on his shoulder as she worriedly called out his name.
“Obi-Wan? Obi-Wan, are you all right?” She wished that Obi-Wan would look at her so she could explain why she had taken Bruck’s information seriously. Siri finally pulled Obi-Wan’s hands away from his face to discover that her friend was laughing.
“I thought you were crying,” she stated. “What’s so funny?” Siri watched as Obi-Wan fought to catch his breath between bouts of laughter.
“I can’t…I can’t believe…I can’t believe that you would listen to Bruck,” he finally blurted out. “You know how much he hates me.” Obi-Wan wiped the tears from his eyes as Siri stood up and placed her hands on her hips.
“He said that he realized that he was simply jealous of you and wanted to be your friend. He knew you wouldn’t listen to him so he came to me. He thought that if he told you this that…” Siri abruptly stopped and glared defiantly at Obi-Wan. “I am so stupid.”
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Obi-Wan grinned at Siri, who was determined to not return the smile. She could not believe that she had allowed herself to be manipulated by Bruck Chun. She wanted to be angry, but the sound of Obi-Wan’s laughter temporarily quenched that feeling as she began to try and hide the chuckle that threatened to escape. Neither apprentice noticed the door opening as Qui-Gon and Master Ru’tan rushed in.
“What’s going…?” Qui-Gon couldn’t finish his thought as the most beautiful sound that he ever heard filled the room. He had never heard Obi-Wan laugh and it was truly exhilarating. The two masters watched in amusement as the padawans attempted to find their centers, but truthfully, Qui-Gon could have listened to the sound of his padawan laughing for the rest of the day.
As Obi-Wan and Siri ceased their guffaws, Qui-Gon smiled at the two apprentices. “Padawan, I must say that was one of the most wondrous things that I’ve ever seen.”
“What do you mean, Master?” Obi-Wan asked.
“The sight of you laughing,” Qui-Gon replied. “I thought that it would be a long time before I was graced with that gift. Would you care to share with me what you found to be so humorous?”
Obi-Wan glanced at Siri and then back to his master. “I…uh well…”
“That’s all right. The important thing is that you have found a reason to laugh again.” Qui-Gon turned to address Siri, who had remained beside Obi-Wan’s bed. “I thank you, Padawan Tachi for bringing laughter back to my padawan’s soul.”
“I didn’t do anything, Master Jinn.” Siri’s face flushed with embarrassment as Master Jinn praised her.
“You’ve done something that no one else has been able to do. I do hope that you will come and visit Obi-Wan more often.”
“I would like that, Master Jinn. Thank you,” Siri said.
“Uh…Master,” Obi-Wan reluctantly asked. “Would it be all right if Siri and I finished our conversation?”
“By all means. Master Ru’tan and I have a few more things to discuss as well.” Qui-Gon followed Miranda out of the room, leaving the two padawans alone once again.
“He’s right you know,” Siri said.
“About what?”
Obi-Wan scooted over so Siri could sit on the edge of the bed. “It is good to hear you laugh again,” she stated. The boyish charm that she had known, no longer existed. Instead, his countenance was more mature and hardened. It was evident that he had seen and experienced far too much for someone so young.
“What if it’s true and the Council wants your journal?” she finally asked him.
“I won’t give it to them and I don’t think that Master Qui-Gon will allow them to take it.”
“You don’t think he will?”
“I’m sure he won’t. I mean…”
“You don’t trust him?”
“I’m learning to,” Obi-Wan admitted. “It probably won’t matter anyway. He’s reading the journal now. He’ll probably figure out that I’m not worthy of his time.”
“Don’t say that,” Siri said. “I’m not going to let you lie around and feel sorry for yourself, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You are the apprentice to Master Qui-Gon Jinn and you will be a Jedi Knight. It is so obvious that he cares for you.”
“I’m not feeling sorry for myself, I’m being realistic.”
“If you feel that way, why didn’t you destroy the journal?”
“Master Yoda thought that I should let Qui-Gon read it. You know that I could never refuse him. But I’ve decided that once Master Qui-Gon is through reading it and if he allows me to remain his padawan learner, that I will destroy it and put that part of my life behind me forever.”
“Was there anything about me in that journal?” Siri asked.
“No, that journal contains nothing but pain. You were always the one good thing in my life.” Obi-Wan placed his hand on his chest and patted it lightly. “I kept you in here in my heart.”
Obi-Wan’s words had deeply touched the young girl. It was a few moments before she could find her voice in order to ask him a question that had plagued her ever since that fateful day. “Why did you send me away?” Siri wasn’t sure that she wanted to hear the answer to her question, but she also realized that she had to know.
“I had to. That’s all I can tell you right now. Please don’t ask me anymore.”
“All right, but one day, we are going to have a long talk.”
“Longer than the one we’re having right now?” Obi-Wan wasn’t sure that he would ever be ready to tell her everything, but he knew that Siri deserved a better explanation than what he had been able to give.
“Yes, much longer,” she assured. “I guess I better let you get some rest. Besides, I need to take care of something.”
“Siri, stay away from Bruck. He’s dangerous.” Obi-Wan still remembered how Siri thought and she did not like to be played for a fool; that’s exactly what Bruck had done.
“Did I say anything about Bruck Chun?”
“You didn’t have to,” Obi-Wan replied.
“I’ll be back later.” Siri stood up and headed towards the door. She paused for a brief moment and looked back over her shoulder. “Take care of yourself, Kenobi.”
Obi-Wan nodded, staring after her as the door closed behind her. He laid back against his pillow and let his thoughts return to the conversation that had just occurred between him and Siri. A lot of old feelings had resurfaced that he never expected to have to deal with. He and Siri had kept their distance from each other the past couple years, allowing the wounds to scab over and begin to heal. Now, she was back in his life again and things had changed—he had changed.
The apprentice knew that he had a difficult time accepting everything that he had become. The path ahead of him was going to extremely long and filled with barriers at every turn. He had a lot to consider in the near future and for the first time in a long time, he wished that he could seek the guidance of the Force.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Qui-Gon Jinn had not stopped smiling since he had left his padawan’s room just a few moments earlier. He had been standing outside Obi-Wan’s door talking with Master Ru’tan when he heard something unexpected come from inside the teen’s room. The sound of his apprentice actually laughing would be forever engrained in his memory.
The Jedi was so deep in his thoughts that he barely registered Miranda calling his name.
“Qui-Gon, are you all right?”
“What? Oh, yes. I’m sorry, Miranda,” Qui-Gon apologized. “I was just thinking about Obi-Wan. I didn’t think I would hear him laugh for a long time.”
“It was a nice surprise,” agreed the soul healer. “Obi-Wan seems to enjoy Padawan Tachi’s company.”
“Yes, he does. I’m grateful that she was able to bring him a moment of joy; he deserves to have so many more.”
“As do you,” Miranda said.
Before Qui-Gon could answer the healer, the door opened and Siri exited Obi-Wan’s room. Upon seeing the two masters, Siri respectfully bowed and greeted Master Jinn and Master Ru’tan.
“Masters, thank you for allowing me to see Obi-Wan.”
“You’re very welcome. It’s obvious that he enjoyed your visit. As I said earlier, feel free to visit him again,” the Jedi master insisted. “As a matter of fact, now that he is beginning to feel better, please inform Garen, Bant, and any of Obi-Wan’s other friends, that they are more welcome to see him as well. Today was the first time that I’ve ever heard him laugh, and nothing would please me more than to hear that sound every day.”
“Obi-Wan used to have a wonderful sense of humor, Master Jinn. Very few people ever got to see it, but it was always there. At least it was until a few years ago.” The hint of sadness in Siri’s voice was evident to Qui-Gon and Miranda.
“Padawan Tachi,” Qui-Gon began. “It is my intention for Obi-Wan to rediscover much of what has been taken from him. With friends like you, Garen, and Bant, I’m sure the journey will be much easier.”
“Thank you, Master Jinn.” Siri bowed to the masters once again. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, there is something that I need to tend to.”
“Of course, Padawan. May the Force be with you,” the Jedi master said.
“And with you.” Siri turned and hurried down the corridor. The two Jedi watched her until she was out of sight. Qui-Gon turned his attention back to the soul healer, only to notice that she was still staring after Padawan Tachi.
“Is something wrong, Miranda?”
“No, not really,” the healer said. “It’s just a feeling that I have. It’s not important right now. What is important is Obi-Wan. After he is released, I need to begin to see him on a regular basis. Will you come to my office to set these appointments up?”
“Of course,” the master complied. “How often will you need to see him?”
“We’ll talk about that at his first appointment. I also want you so make an appointment as well.”
“I thought that we had already discussed this. Obi-Wan is the one in need of your services and…”
“I believe that you are under orders as well, Qui-Gon,” Miranda reminded the Jedi master. “Now, I’ll let you return to your apprentice. Please give him my regards.” The healer turned abruptly, not providing Qui-Gon with an opportunity for a rebuttal.
“Obstinate woman,” Qui-Gon muttered under his breath. Sighing, he entered Obi-Wan’s room to find the young man sitting in bed, staring at his journal. It was difficult to see the teen looking so lost and full of despair, when just a few moments ago, his laughter had echoed throughout the small room.
“Are you all right?” the Jedi inquired.
The shrug of Obi-Wan’s shoulders answered the master’s question. “I guess,” Obi-Wan finally replied. “I was just wondering…”
“Wondering what?”
“Nothing. It’s not important.” Obi-Wan handed the journal to Qui-Gon. “How much have you read?”
“Not too much. It seems like the entries for the first year were sporadic. I’ve just started the second year. I…”
“Have you found what you were hoping to find?”
“What do you mean?” Qui-Gon sat down on the edge of the bed and waited patiently for Obi-Wan to continue.
“You said that you wanted to find out more about me. Have you found out what you wanted to know?” The youth cast his eyes down; not wanting to see the disappointment that he knew would be present in Qui-Gon’s eyes.
“What I have learned Obi-Wan, is that you possess an inner strength like I’ve never seen before. No matter what I read in the future will not change my opinion of you.” Qui-Gon could tell that his words of encouragement fell on deaf ears. He was amazed at how quickly the youth’s moods would change.
“Maybe you should finish reading it before you make too many more judgments about me, Master Jinn.”
Obi-Wan was surprised when Qui-Gon placed the book back in his hands. “If reading your journal causes this much self-doubt and worry to consume you, I will not read it,” the Jedi stated. “You may do with it as you wish.”
“What? You don’t want to read it?” Obi-Wan stared at his master in disbelief.
“I do, but only because it will help me understand what you’ve been through. However, I am not prepared to place you in a position where your emotions could perhaps affect your recovery.” Qui-Gon could feel Obi-Wan’s uncertainty and confusion swirl about him. His padawan had a definite need to release his pent-up emotions and insecurities. The Jedi master placed a hand on Obi-Wan’s arm.
“Obi-Wan, have you tried to release these feelings to the Force?” Qui-Gon inquired.
“No,” the youth admitted. “The Force has not been with me for a long time, Master Jinn.”
“Obi-Wan, do you trust me to guide you through a simple meditation exercise? You need to see that the Force is your ally, not something to be feared.” The Jedi master could see Obi-Wan’s jaw tightly clench as the teen contemplated his request.
“Will it hurt?” Obi-Wan innocently asked. The teen did not understand his reluctancy to accept Qui-Gon's offer. A few moments earlier, he wanted to call upon the Force to help him sort out his feelings.
“It shouldn’t, especially with the drug out of your system. Shall we try?”
“I don’t know…can I think about it?” The youth breathed an inaudible sigh of relief as Qui-Gon smiled and nodded.
“Of course, Obi-Wan. Take all the time you need. Will you be all right if I leave you for a while? I need to freshen up and do a couple of errands.”
Now that Obi-Wan was getting better physically, Qui-Gon allowed himself the opportunity to take some time for himself. He was tired of getting lectures from Nathe and Miranda on his own well-being. The Jedi was thrilled when the youth returned his smile.
“That will be fine, Master. I have quite a bit to think about as well,” Obi-Wan replied. The young man picked up the journal and gave it back to Qui-Gon. “Take this with you. If you want to read it, you can. After you’re done, destroy it. I never want to see it again.”
“I don’t know what to say. Thank you for trusting me with this.” Qui-Gon took the small book and tucked it inside his belt for safety. “I’ll be back later. Take care, my Padawan. May the Force be with you.”
“Thank you, Master, and…May the Force be with you as well.” Obi-Wan found himself staring at the door, long after Qui-Gon had left. The youth finally leaned back against his pillow as he considered the events of the day.
He had rekindled his friendship with Siri and had exhibited trust in his master by allowing Qui-Gon to continue reading the journal. The teen had to admit that he was feeling better physically and all the aches and pains that had been an integral part of his life for the last few days were beginning to dull.
Obi-Wan began to wonder if perhaps his life was going to actually get better. Maybe Qui-Gon had been right and their journey as master and apprentice would be one filled with promise. Did he dare to hope? Did he dare to dream of the possibilities? The padawan closed his eyes and lay there, thinking about the future and how it no longer seemed out of his reach.
