: Glad you liked it!
Sil
: Yup, a lot has been happening...but more is to come!
And here comes the second interlude!
Interlude : The Senator
"For too long, those pirates have marauded the spacelanes. It's high time that the Republic actually flexed some muscle and did something about it. If they don't protect their member worlds, they're going to find that those worlds aren't interested in membership."
"And I've told you more than once that we're doing what we can," the senator said. "But it takes time to convince Coruscant that these pirates are worth their attention."
Rique sighed. "My mother and my sister have been enslaved for five years, Senator. They may not even still be alive."
"Something else that ought to be taken into consideration. You're motivated by personal reasons, son. Politicians need to be shown why they should care."
"Then why don’t you do it?" Rique said, and saw the dark look that his elder brother was throwing him. He was too incensed right now to be properly respectful.
"Like you, I'm seen as being too close to the situation," the senator said, leaning back. "You may not realize this, but one of your sister's friends is a second cousin of mine. We never saw much of each other, which probably explains why the pirates never made a connection. But I've had no word of her since the attack."
"I'm sorry, Senator," Rique said. "I didn't know."
"There's no way you could have. And while I can't do anything about getting the Senate to authorize any action, I am not entirely without resources."
"Senator," Tomass said, "any assault by unprepared forces would only put more lives at risk. It could even embolden the pirates to become even more brazen in their attacks."
"I'm not talking about an unprepared force. It's going to take some time, but I have some contacts within the Jedi Order. One of them, Master Arca Jeth, recently returned to Coruscant. He owes me a favor, and I think the time might have come to cash in on that debt."
"But I thought the Jedi acted on behalf of the Republic," Tomass said. "And with the consent of the Senate."
"Not always," the senator said. "They have their own fleets, and have, when necessary, acted without authorization from the Senate. Their code demands that when they see the innocent oppressed, they take action to rectify the situation. This would seem like such a time."
"Then by all means, speak with your friend," Rique said. "We have to do something for Ael and the others. Your cousin, what is her name."
"Her name is Tayla," the senator said. "I simply hope 'is' still is the appropriate word to use."
"We'll get her out," Rique said. "Her, as well as the others victimized by these raiders."
Chapter 12 will begin Wednesday. And I'll tease you by letting you see the quote that will begin it.
"A mother's duty is to her children, while a wife's is to her husband. When the two conflict, a mother must protect her child."
Force be with you,

I can't wait either. Fascinating updates, now we see if the Jedi become involved in this mess. I think by the time anyone intervenes, Ael may have things well underway.... or not....

Okay, here comes the next post!
Chapter 11: Mother
"A mother's duty is to her children, while a wife's is to her husband. When the two conflict, a mother must protect her child." – Aelinor
The sun was bright today, as I sat on the patio watching the children play. Aelizabet, my six-month old daughter, lay in my arms, her green eyes closed in sleep. The tufts of red hair already had given testament to her name being appropriate, and I wondered idly if her personality would match. My three year old son, Bertram, was building a tower out of some wooden blocks that Tobyn had made for him. "Talya, how long has it been?"
"Since what, milady?" she asked. She'd mellowed considerably, which was probably a good thing for her sake. If there was one thing that was true, it was that Tobyn wouldn't have permitted the sort of lip she'd regularly given me in the early days of my marriage.
"Since we were taken off the
Treasure
," I said. "How long has it been since we were permitted our own choices?"
"It's been ten years, Aelinor," she said. "We've lived over a third of our lives on Hapes."
My attention was suddenly drawn to the lawn before me. "I don’t want to," Trista was saying.
"And I said you have to, which means you must," Eyrwurth said. "After all, you're just a girl."
"So what?" Trista said. "Just because you say you're better than me doesn't make it so! And it certainly doesn't mean I have to do what you say!"
"Talya, take Aelizabet. I think some motherly intervention's about to be required out there." I slipped Aelizabet into Talya's arms, and rose, then rushed out onto the lawn, where Eyrwurth had forced Trista to her knees. "That's enough!" I said, placing myself between them. "Trista, gather your things and go inside."
"Yes, Mommy," she said, rising. I waited until she'd gotten a few steps, then looked over my shoulder to find her sticking her tongue out at her brother.
"Keep that up, little lady, and you'll fin d yourself in trouble as well," I said. Her face fell, and she turned, making her way back to the house. "As for you," I said, turning back to Eyrwurth, "just because Hapan society places men above women doesn't mean you have an right to order your sister about."
"But Mother,"
"Don't 'But Mother' me," I said. "You're going to walk into that house, and you're going to apologize to your sister. And then you're to go up to your room until dinner. I'll decide then whether you'll be allowed to eat with the rest of the family."
"Yes, Mother," he said.
"And you should be glad your father isn't here. He might have understood where you got the idea, but he wouldn't have looked kindly upon what you did to his little girl." Tobyn was likely to be gone for several more months, and I didn't think this little incident worthy of mentioning to him when he returned. I turned, on hand on my hip, and watched as he slowly made his way into the house. I wasn't going to stand over him and make sure he apologized to Trista, but rather, watched to see if he did it. After all, a forced apology is no real apology at all.
He did appear to apologize, something I'd question Trista about later. I'd also ask just what it was that started this whole mess in the first place. I sighed, wondering just how I'd gotten to this position in the first place. "Nicely handled, Lady Aelinor," I heard, and broke free of my thoughts.
"I'm glad that you approve, Lady Dalyla," I said, approaching the other woman and embracing her. Tobyn had introduced us, then told me later that Dalyla was the wife of one of his chief rivals. He encouraged our friendship, though I suspected he thought I'd discover some weakness that he could then exploit. "Sometimes, though, I wish Tobyn were her to play disciplinarian."
"Too often, I think our husbands fail to understand how much we do for them," she said. "I hope you don't mind, but I ordered your slave inside. There is something I wanted to discuss with you that shouldn't be overheard."
++++++++++++
That's all for now. More will be coming this weekend!

Oh, the suspense... I wonder what Lady Dalyla wants to discuss? Could her name be a play on Delilah?
Ten years, wow! And a ton of kids, too. Hmm...

It is just so said that they fight against each other like
harpies
. They could achieve more if they would fight together as a unit.
And even after things got better for the women on Harpan, they still stick to that aggressive attitude.
But thanks for this intriguing up-date!

: Well, you've got admit that it makes more sense if I let Ael grow up a little bit. As for Dalyla's name, you got it in one.
Sil
: probably some kind of politics is what's holding Master Arca up.
AzureAngel
: They could do so much more if they worked together. But that's just not how the Hapans work.
VaderLVR
: Can I assume that I further piqued your interest???
Okay, here comes the next post!
"I'll make this as simple as possible," Dalyla said. "It's become clear to some of the women that it's time this planet had a single government, a single ruler. When the Raiders first settled on Hapes, there seemed to be plenty to go around, far more than they'd ever need. But recall that those men were used to a nomadic existence. Nobody expected they'd remain in one place."
"But that was the past," I said. I had a sneaking suspicion I was either going to like this idea a lot, or else it was going to be something that would appall me beyond anything I'd seen or heard since the day that Tobyn's father hauled me back here as a prize for his son.
"Hapes needs to stop living in the past," Dalyla said. "There are a few major clan leaders, but if Hapes is to move out from their piratical ways, they're going to need to behave like any other world."
"Makes sense," I said, not committing myself to anything. I wondered, in fact, where Dalyla might be going with this.
"There are certain houses that look to the past, and only to the past. Others believe that we should hold onto our traditions, but not at the cost of sacrificing the future. Furthermore, those who cannot bring themselves to look at anything but where we've come from need to be removed from the stage."
"And you believe that my husband falls in with the category that can't look at what Hapes might become," I said.
"Tobyn isn't what I would call the most forward thinking of men," Dalyla said. "I think you know this better than anybody."
"So what are you suggesting be done about it?" I asked. "I'm not a revolutionary."
"You don’t need to be," Dalyla said. "As I said, there those who feel that people like Tobyn are holding Hapes back. I need to know if you'd be willing to aid us in changing Hapes for the better."
"I'll need more details before I commit myself. After all, I have my children to think of."
"Of course," Dalyla said. "I'd be concerned if you thought otherwise. What I'm offering is the chance to get your old life back."
"My old life? Lady Dalyla, my life is here. My children are here. My future, whether it is the one I would have chosen for myself or not, is here."
"And if you could have that life back? If it didn't mean leaving your children behind? Lady Aelinor, I'll be frank. If you're willing to help us, we can give you back the life you thought you'd lost."
"What would I have to do?"
"My husband is preparing a lightning strike at the heart of House L'Roux. If you will grant us the opportunity to remove Tobyn, we'll see you, and your children, safely off Hapes."
"What of the houses that have sworn fealty to Morwan and his House?" I asked. Though Tobyn was the visual leader, there was no question that his father was still the House's head.
"Those who are willing to shift their loyalty will be given protection by my husband's house," Dalyla said. "The men who aren't willing to admit their mistake will have to be eliminated."
"And their wives?" I asked, concern entering my mind.
"Those willing to become part of our house will be accepted. Those who aren't will serve to cover the cost of the assault."
"You mean they'll be sold into slavery," I said.
"There is a cost to everything, Lady Aelinor. Consider my offer. Think of what it would mean to you and your children. Do you really want to watch as Tobyn marries your daughter off simply in order to cement some kind of alliance? Do you want her to become the prize of a pirate?"
"I'll consider your proposal, Lady Dalyla."
"But don’t take too long. If Tobyn returns without word from you, we shall have to consider you a liability. And trust me; those who stand against me don’t last very long."
++++++++++++
That's all for now. You'll gets a bit of reaction from Aelinor in Wednesday's post.
Force be with you,

So, Dalyla is turning her back on the past, and her husband is supporting her. Interesting, and will she then turn on her husband, like Delilah did?
Oh, Ael has an interesting dilemma on her hands now. She wanted change, but how has time changed that, has it really changed it, and will she decide to help? If she does, will she choose to leave Hapes or stay and continue the revolution? What of her sister? So many things to consider...
