"I'm sorry, Aelinor," she said. "But we needed proof of Dalyla's intentions. Lord Calden may have authorized the plans, and did consider an attack. But he never authorized this," she said, nudging the unconscious Dalyla. "When she wakes, I think she'll find her status greatly reduced." She gestured, and a pair of black clad boys came forward, their garb a slight contrast with the deep green of Milyssa's gown. "And do extend my House's apologies to the guards that we had to subdue," she said, the blaster disappearing into her gown. "Believe me, it was necessary."

"I understand, Lady Milyssa," I said, wiping away the slight trickle of blood from Dalyla's knife. "You have my thanks."

"No, thank you," she said. "If you hadn't warned me, this madwoman might have plunged our houses into a blood fued that would never have ended. You took a great risk coming to me, but it showed great trust. It will not be forgotten. And now, I must return to my own home. I bid you goodnight, Lady Aelinor."

"Please, call me Ael," I said. Then Milyssa was gone. I made my way to my chambers and there, alone, let my sobs break forth. I'd nearly lost everything. Perhaps, in a way, Dalyla was right about one thing. Change needed to take place. But it couldn't occur the way she had planned it.

Superb chapter! applause

We didn't get snow, we got tornadoes! sad

dm: I don;t think I've ever seen that much snow fall in such a short amount of time. But getting back to the fic, I'm glad you liked the little mit of back blading Milyssa engineered.

Rogue_Pilot: Are you implying that you don;t trust Milyssa?

VaderLVR: Here's hoping that you made it through the wild weather of the last week. Glad you liked the post!

Sil: No way I want to see that kind of snow any time soon. True friends are indeed a blessing.

Azure_Angel: I think I'll keep mum on that.

Okay, here comes the next post!

Chapter 13: Allies

"Building a civilization anew requires many hands, and few allies. The beginning, as with most, is full of danger." - Diantha

It became clear to me, in the days that followed, that if I was going to attempt any form of change, it would have to be sudden, total, and comprehensive. I also knew that I couldn't draw any but those I could trust explicitly into my circle. And moreover, I realized that I couldn't let even a breath of my ideas slip to Tobyn. If I did, it would not only mean my own end, but the end of those I intended to draw into my confidence. And with that end, the future of Hapes could be in jeopardy.

"I don’t even know what to say, Ael," my sister said. She was still adjusting to married life, and had only recently discovered that she was carrying her first child. I knew that as a result, she would be kept from taking any active role in the events to come. "This isn't the sort of thing to be undertaken lightly. And you do realize Tobyn's going to kill you if he finds out you're even thinking about this."

"I've considered the possibility. But when I think of the alternatives, well, this seems like the only choice. Besides, with our husbands out terrorizing the shipping lanes, aren't we already doing most of the work?"

"But to remove our husbands entirely…"
"It's not like I'm talking about killing all the men," I said, almost laughing at the idea. "I'm simply talking about removing them from what little decision-making they take part in. I'm talking about placing power in the hands of those who can best use it."

"Who's to say that's us?" Talya asked. "I mean, I'm as much in favor of asserting our rights as anybody else, but can we really justify doing to the men what they've done to us?"

"She's not talking about enslaving the men, Talya," Diantha said. "Our husbands aren't here to make the decisions. We're the ones who run our houses on a day-today basis. Who's to say we can't run the government as well?"

"We have to first establish a government in order to run it," I said. "And trust me when I say this, there are some who aren't going to be happy with what we come up with. If this doesn't work, we're going to be reviled at best."

"Which is why we've got to keep it quiet," Diantha said. "But Ael, you've got make sure that some of the other houses have a say in this."

"I intend to. But nobody talks to anybody outside this room without all of us agreeing on it. And those draw into this have to be absolutely trustworthy. I think we should bring Lady Milyssa into our confidence."

"Can you trust her?" Di asked me. "I mean, it was someone from her house that tried to kill you."

"And it was Milyssa who saved me," I said. "She understood what Dalyla's sort of change would mean. I think she can help us establish a body that will be fair to all."

"And with Dalyla now out of favor, Milyssa's running House Trayve herself," Talya said. "Perhaps we should look at the other heads of the major houses."

"That's going to take time," Di said. "And the longer we wait, the more chance there is that somebody's going to say something out of turn and doom all of us."

"It's a chance we have to take," I said. "If we all stand as one, this can work."

"It'll have to," Di said.

Yepp, everything changes though all stays the same in its very core somehow. I am thrilled senseless and can´t wait to see the wind of change going through the society of Hapes.

VaderLVR: I'm glad you continue to find this story unique. I was afraid as I continued that I'd fall into some old pattern, and lose the unique nature.

Sil: Don't worry, we're getting there.

Rogue_Pilot: While we may know that Hapes won;t change, that doesn't mean that Ael has to believ it can't change.

AzureAngel: You're certainly setting the bar pretty high...

Drizzt: Glad you've found the time to catch up. I hope you'll continue to find it interesting.

dm: Very carefully indeed, given what's at stake.

Okay, here comes the next post!

I contacted Milyssa, and asked that she come for a visit. I realized that I could have just as easily gone to her, but this topic was so potentially explosive that I needed to have control of the surroundings in which it took place. Talya led her into the garden where Dalyla had presented her proposal, and after a nod from me, left. "I want to thank you again for the other night," I said, embracing Milyssa. "Come, sit down. I have something I want you to hear."

I outlined our proposal in only the most general of terms, because if she was going to join us, she would need to feel as if her opinion counted for something. "If you don't feel that you can support us in this, tell me now," I finished. "I won’t think anything less of you, but I will have to ask that you not inform your husband."

"I certainly can see how it benefits us," Milyssa said, leaning back, one hand absently twirling a lock of hair. "But how do you plan to keep the men from interfering?"

"That's something, that, unfortunately, we haven't been able to come up with a good answer to. We also haven't been able to figure out how to decide who leads this new government, should we actually succeed in resetting Hapan society."

"I think I have an answer to that. The first wives of each clan could meet in one place. Through a vote, they could name a leader, a mother for this new government."

"A Queen Mother," I said. "I like the sound of that. Powerful but nurturing at the same time, as the first leader must be." I turned. "Does that mean you're with us?"

"Like you, I've seen the waste that takes place here. And while I didn't by any means agree with her tactics, Delyla was right that Hapes needs to take its place among the civilized worlds of the galaxy. But there's still the issue of how to handle the men, both before and after the revolution."

"Let's not call it that," I said. "It has too much of a military feel to it. For now, let's think of it as a reorganization."

"Call it whatever you like, but sooner or later, you'll have to decide what to with our husbands."

"Perhaps that should be something we leave for the Queen Mother to decide."

"Perhaps you're right. Who else knows about this?"

"So far, it's just you, me, my sister, Lady Diantha Cha'Gray, and Talya, the slave who escorted you to me this morning."

"I trust you will be looking for allies among the other houses loyal to Tobyn's?" Milyssa asked.

"Eventually. I'm also planning a series of small parties to sound out the first wives of some of the other major clans. It's not going to be easy, knowing who to trust."

"But it's going to be necessary in order to make this work. This is, perhaps, the stupidest thing I've ever done. But if we can pull this off, Hapes will be the better for it."

++++++++++++

That's going to do it for tonight, I'm afraid. Chapter 14 will begin on Saturday.

Force be with you,

Ahh, parties! A great idea, people tend to talk more at parties. If you listen carefully, a lot of information can be gleaned. Slow and careful, reorganizing things... nice. Hapes may be somewhat better off, but we all know the backstabbing that goes on even after the "reorganization." So much is at stake here, and if the men catch wind of it beforehand, there will be trouble, big trouble! worried

Yay! Milyssa joined the good side! I'm glad. I like her.

Good plan, Ael. As dm1 says, parties are a good place to learn things, if you know what to listen for.

Great update! Can't wait for more!
