"I certainly can see how it benefits us," Milyssa said, leaning back, one hand absently twirling a lock of hair. "But how do you plan to keep the men from interfering?"

"That's something, that, unfortunately, we haven't been able to come up with a good answer to. We also haven't been able to figure out how to decide who leads this new government, should we actually succeed in resetting Hapan society."

"I think I have an answer to that. The first wives of each clan could meet in one place. Through a vote, they could name a leader, a mother for this new government."

"A Queen Mother," I said. "I like the sound of that. Powerful but nurturing at the same time, as the first leader must be." I turned. "Does that mean you're with us?"

LOVE this peek into the origins of Hapan politics! grin

Yepp, a lovely twist an explanation.

*grins very widely!*

A certain family name sounded familiar from the beginning on...

*sighs suddenly!*

But power is sometimes the loss of innocence...

dm: Yes, Ael's going to have to be very careful, or else she's going to wind up hip-deep in poodoo.

Rogue_Pilot: Glad you like seeing Milyssa. She's got an important role yet to play.

Sil: Yup, that's the ticket.

VaderLVR: That's part of what got me writing this fic. I wanted to explore where the Hapes we know might have come from.

AzureAngel: Just let's just say that a certain name we all know is going to pop up.

Okay, here comes the next post!

Chapter 14: Council

"Men have deceived since Hapes was born. Now, it falls to us to hide the coming change." – Milyssa

The formal parlor had been cleared, the trophies that House L'Roux had taken during its rise under Morwan temporarily removed. I surveyed the newly-polished table, which one of the servants had found locked in a storage shed. The fact that the table had been hidden away surprised me, as it could have been used quite easily in the smaller of the manor's two formal dining rooms.

Twelve chairs at around the table, each with a pair of additional chairs behind them, forming small wedges. The chair at the table was for each of the twelve ladies from the Great Houses. The two chairs behind were for representatives of the lesser houses who owed fealty to the greater house. Twelve Houses, each with an equal vote, should things even reach that point. I could only hope that the plans that we'd made, the plans that had led to this council, would reach fruition.

"The conference will begin once the doors have closed," I told Anya, a young Corellian woman that Tobyn had seized on a raid while I was pregnant with Bertram. She'd become his second wife, and was, I knew, carrying her first child. "There are to be no interruptions for any reason, short of a planetary catastrophe."

"Understood, First Wife," Anya said. "How long do you expect this to last?"

"I don’t know," I said with a sigh. "I've never attempted to host a luncheon on this scale. I don’t know if anyone has." I gave the room one last look. "Lady Diantha will be arriving shortly. Escort her here, and tell her that I will join her shortly."

"Yes, First Wife," Anya said. "And the others?"

"I will greet them myself," I said. "They shouldn't be arriving for another hour at least." That would give me time to check on Zanya and the food that she was preparing, and to leave final instructions with Talya, who would be watching over the children. "I'll have a comlink with me, should you need me for something."

I left the room then, and headed down to the kitchen for a quick check-in with Zanya. I didn't doubt that she had things well in hand, but this was too important to let something small cause a problem. I couldn't resist micromanaging every detail just a little bit. The kitchen was a hubbub of activity, and in the center of it, like the calm eye of a storm, was Zanya.

A young Rodian nearly collided with me before realizing I was there. "Watch where you're going, you fool!" Zanya shouted at her. "Milady, this is not a good time," she said to me. "There's still much to be done."

"But you will have things ready by the time the ladies arrive?" I asked, though I suspected I already knew the answer. Zanya directed a look towards me that clearly asked if I had spaced my brain. 'Of course," I said. "I shouldn't have doubted you."

"I shouldn't have overreacted. It's not my place to judge you, milady. I will have things ready by the time the guests arrive."

"Very well. I leave things in your capable hands." Then I left the kitchen, the hem of my gown rasping against the stone floor. I made my way back to the ground floor, and then headed upstairs, to check on my children. Eyrwurth was playing with some kind of computerized holochess program that Tobyn had lifted off a Republic liner, and then presented to his eldest son as a gift. "It'll teach him the strategic skills he'll need as a man." I'd always feared the day Tobyn decided it was time to take Eyrwurth on a raid, but perhaps with what I had planned this afternoon, that wouldn't be a problem. Meanwhile, the program would keep him occupied for several hours.

"Mommy!" Trista said, rushing me as I entered. Then she stopped. "But didn't you have something important today?"

"I do," I said, bending down to embrace her. "But that doesn't mean that I don't have time for you. I'm going to leave Talya up here, and I want you to listen to her as if she were me. Okay?" She nodded as solemnly as an eight-year old could. Talya came in from the small bathroom off to one side of the playroom, Aelizabet in her arms.

"Bertram's down for a nap," she said, handing my infant daughter over. She was starting to get heavy, and I knew that it was only going to be a matter of time before she started crawling. And I realized then that if the revolution I was hoping to begin today was going to succeed, I would be too busy to see such things.

"Am I doing the right thing?" I asked.

"I can't say for certain, Ael," Talya said. "Only you can make that kind of decision."

"No mother should have to give up this time," I said. "It's too important, and we can't ever make them this small again," I said, rocking Aelizabet. She opened her eyes briefly, and I could see them widen in recognition. I smiled, and she fell asleep once more.

"It's for her I'm doing this," I said. "For her, and all the children."

That's all for now. More will be coming on Wednesday.

Wise words from an amazing woman, shaped by destiny!

*is hunted down by man with tooth brush, reminding her mockingly of her teaching duties tomorrow!*

Anyway, I find it great that her kids are still the most important thing to her. She is not getting powercrazed, but acts very calm and sensible.

Sil: Yup. He's taking after dear old Dad.

Rogue_Pilot: For her sake, I hope not.

VaderLVR: Thanks!

Azure: As Ael said, it's for her kids that she's doing all of this. Too bad we know that by the time of Luke & Leia, powercrazed women have taken over.

Okay, here comes the next post!

After leaving the children, I returned downstairs, and found that, as predicted, Diantha had already arrived. "I love what you've done with this space," she said, gesturing around the room. "Where did you find this table?"

"In a storage shed, of all places," I said. "Of course, I had to remove a few things from the room to avoid offending our guests. Apparently, Tobyn's family stepped on a few toes in its rise to prominence."

"Given the society that we've lived in for the last ten years, I'm not entirely surprised," Diantha said. "How's your family, since you brought up the subject?"

"It's killing me not be able to spend more time with Aelizabet," I said. "This could be the beginning of a brighter future for all of us."

"Sometimes we make sacrifices for the greater good," Di said. "And sometimes, we make sacrifices for ourselves. But more often than either of those, we make sacrifices for our children."

"You're wise beyond your years, sister," I said. The chime rang. "That will probably be Lady Milyssa," I said. "Either her, or Lady Alessandra's daughter, Raviana." I left the room, heading for the door. It was Raviana who stood on the doorstep.

"Lady Aelinor," she said, as I gestured for her to enter.

"Welcome, Lady Raviana." Inviting her had been a bit of a chance on my part, but I considered it worth the risk. As Alessandra's daughter, she wielded a considerable influence over the rest of Morwan's children. Even Dyanna's son deferred to Raviana. She was taller than her mother, but had the same shapely build. She also had inherited her mother's dark hair, though her eyes were a deep brown, where Alessandra's had been deep blue. I led her into the dining room.

"My sister, Lady Diantha Cha'Gray," I said, the turned to Di. "This is Lady Raviana L'Roux."

"A pleasure, Lady Raviana," Di said. I heard the door chime again.

"Excuse me. That will be some of the others. If you would both have seats here," I indicated the two seats behind the one I would occupy, "I shall be returning shortly." This time it was Milyssa. "Lady Milyssa, welcome," I said. "And your companions?"

"My husband's elder sister, Lady Patrizia, and his second wife, Lady Elaina." So, with Dalyla's fall, Milyssa had ascended to the position of First Wife. This meant that two of the twelve Houses would have their lead member supporting the idea I intended to put forth.

"Welcome, Lady Patrizia, Lady Elaina," I said. "If you'll accompany me to the dining room, please. Most of the others haven't yet arrived."

"Not too surprising, since they had further to travel," Patrizia said. Her face was long, and had a hard edge to it. She'd surely seen more than her fair share of what women on Hapes could expect if the current culture continued. Elaina, by contrast, had something of an impish quality to her. She hadn't been beaten down by life.

"Lady Milyssa, you may choose any of the seats at the table. I'll be escorting each of the others in as they arrive."

More introductions, and the first debates will be coming on Saturday.

inviting Tobyn's sister is a bit of a risk indeed. So I'm guessing that the bitter blonde guy from teh beginning is Dyanna's son? Guess I should add that Dyanna reminds me of Starscream.

dm: I hope you'll be pleased with the beginning, as things will get going a bit in today's post.

Azure: I know exactly what you mean, as I've been through a few department meetings I'd like to forget. Hopefully, things like that won't be a problem here.

Rogue_Pilot: I'd say that Ael will have been very careful about who she invites...

VaderLVR: Yes, yes it should.

Sil: Inviting Tobyn's sister is a bit of a risk. But there's little reward without risk. You're correct that the bitter guy we encountered at the beginnign is indeed Dyanna's son.

Okay, here comes the next post!

The meal concluded, and the kitchen staff cleared out the room. We could now get down to the real reason behind the luncheon. "I know that many of you wonder why I asked you here." I looked to Lady Tandra L'Aldenk, whose father-in-law had carried on a feud with Morwan that stretched back decades. "Some may even suspect that this is some sort of trap. It isn't. I asked you to come here so that we could discuss a possible new beginning for Hapes." I was met with dead silence. I wasn't sure, this early on, whether to interpret the silence as a good thing. I could only continue on, I supposed.

"Many of you know the plight that faces the women on this world. We're either slaves, or we're trophies to be displayed, and then forgotten. Our daughters are chess pieces, tools in the hands of their fathers. But that isn't the way that it has to be. Some of you have heard of the coup that Lady Dalyla of House Trayve attempted."

"I heard that she tried to assassinate you," said the twenty-something Nykole Venken. Her gray-green eyes locked onto me. "That doesn't explain why you wish to drag all of us into this."

"She tried to assassinate me because I wouldn't go along with her husband's plans to attack my husband's House." It was a comment I'd already told Milyssa I'd be making, and we'd worked things out.

"It wasn't Calden's plan," Milyssa said, almost as if I'd cued her. "It was entirely Dalyla's, a plan for which she had already paid the ultimate price. Calden never wanted to see a feud erupt between our houses."

"What I propose is far more sweeping, and hopefully less dangerous to all of us. For decades, the women of Hapes have kept the home fires burning while our men have created a fearsome reputation that is known throughout the Republic."

"Your point, Lady Aelinor?" Tandra asked.

"I'm getting there," I said, realizing that I could quickly lose the group if I didn't move quickly. "We've done all the work, but our husbands get the credit. It's time that we rose up and took what should be ours. I've asked you here to see if you're willing to join me in lifting the cover of darkness and bringing Hapes into a new light."

"With you at the head?" Tandra asked. "I refuse to submit to your control."

"I don’t claim that I have any right to assume that I would lead whatever government we might come up with. But I would think that almost anything would be better than watching your daughters be used as political pawns in the hands of their fathers. I asked you here because I feel that if Hapes is to have a future, we have to step forward and take it for ourselves."

"And how would you have us handle our husbands when they return?" Nykole asked. "I know my husband isn't going to simply surrender the control he's maintained for so long.""

"We'll have to move in secret, when our husbands are away. If we agree, then we begin today. And we'll have to hope that we'll be finished before they return."

+++++++++++

That's all for now. The last interlude's starting up on Wednesday.

Force be with you,

Tych_sel
