Very risky, but if Hapes is to move forward, these steps must be taken. Ael at least addressed the concern that she was seeking power for herself very well. They must work together, and fast!

"Many of you know the plight that faces the women on this world. We're either slaves, or we're trophies to be displayed, and then forgotten. Our daughters are chess pieces, tools in the hands of their fathers. But that isn't the way that it has to be.

I fully agree here and hope her plans will come true!!!

"I don’t claim that I have any right to assume that I would lead whatever government we might come up with. But I would think that almost anything would be better than watching your daughters be used as political pawns in the hands of their fathers. I asked you here because I feel that if Hapes is to have a future, we have to step forward and take it for ourselves."

"And how would you have us handle our husbands when they return?" Nykole asked. "I know my husband isn't going to simply surrender the control he's maintained for so long.""

"We'll have to move in secret, when our husbands are away. If we agree, then we begin today. And we'll have to hope that we'll be finished before they return."

Things are about to change! mischief

Rogue_Pilot: It was risky, but it also gave Ael the advantage of showing that she's willing to trust the other women, even those who might have stood against her.

dm: Indeed they must move fast, as their husbands could arrive home at any time. Or not...

Azure: It is true, which is, I think, why Ael's plans just might succeed.

VaderLVR: Oh, without doubt, there's a change in the wind.

Okay, here comes the last interlude.

Interlude: Republic Space

"What's a Republic battle fleet doing here?" Tobyn asked as the fleet he'd assembled while still hidden in the Transitory Mists jumped out of hyperspace. "I thought that this was supposed to be some sort of convoy. I'll have Daythan's head on a spit when we get back."

"We'll have to survive this," the first officer said. "You do have some kind of strategy in mind, right?"

"Don't I always?" Tobyn said. "Remember that time that the hyperdrive broke down after the raid on those Caridan yachts three years ago?"

"You mean when we thought we'd have to space all the captives?" Cha'Grey asked.

"That's the one," Tobyn replied with a cockiness he really didn't feel. "I got us out of that, didn't I?"

"We didn't have to deal with ships that could fight back then," the first officer said.

"Then we'll just have to yank the teeth of this Republic fleet. Think how many credits we can probably get them to pay to get their admiral back. Besides, who's to say there won’t be a hundred beautiful women aboard? You've been looking for another wife, haven't you?"

"Sometimes I think you're out of your mind," Cha'Grey said. "Fine, we'll do it your way. I'll alert the fleet to disperse. Might as well make hitting us as difficult for them as we can."

"You're assuming that they're ready for us. I think they're just expecting another group of unsophisticated pirates."

***

On the bridge of the Dominant, Jedi Master Arca Jeth watched as the capital ships of the pirate fleet turned to face the Republic fleet. They were not going to make this easy by simply surrendering, or fleeing. "You may launch your fighters, Captain," he told the line officer in command. "But remind them that they are not to fire until they have been fired upon."

"Master Jedi, if I give them that order, we will have conceded the first move."

"We will also have given them every opportunity to avoid what they have coming," Master Arca said. "Remember what we stand for, Captain."

"Yes, Master," the captain said, turning to his bridge crew. "Launch our fighters." Arca reached to the Force, sensing the pilots, but doing nothing more. It was not his way to interfere with the minds of others more than was absolutely necessary. He reached out, drawing the on the Force to strengthen those who were his allies. He enhanced the reflexes of the pilots, preparing them for the fight that was to come. The two other Jedi in the fleet reached out, accepting Arca's influence and adding their own talents to the battle meld.

In the Force, Arca saw the pirate fleet leap forward to pounce on the fighters that the Republic's task force had arrayed against them. Two ships hung back, sparsely crewed. Those would be the treasure ships, the ships that the pirates would fill when they had plundered the lightly armed convoy they'd been told to expect.

Reaching out further, Arca expanded his meditation to include those aboard the pirate vessels. Many of their minds were simple, lacking the discipline of trained soldiers. A few were hardened by the pirate life, the vicious campaigns that they had survived. He focused on those, for they would be the commanders of the opposition. He enhanced the threat of the Republic ships, doubling their number and, in certain, select areas, their size as well. He felt a few of the ships back off, but they didn't flee. Not yet.

The pirates opened fire, and the captain of the Dominant turned to Arca. "May we take action now, Master Jedi."

"Yes," Arca said softly. "They have fired the first shot. On their heads rests their fate."

***
"Nadd's black heart!" Tobyn shouted. "How can every single shot of ours miss? Those Republic ships are so large even the worst of us should be able to hit something!"

"There's going to be no escape for us this time, Tobyn," the first officer said. "We should surrender now and pray they are in a merciful mood."

"I'm not being taken back to Coruscant as a prize," Tobyn said. He leapt from the command chair, all but throwing the helm officer out of his seat. Tobyn then grabbed the controls, wrenching the Ravisher from its course, and setting a new one, straight into the heart of the Republic's formation.

"It's time stop treating these military types as if they're gods," he said. "The only way to deal with someone who tries to force his ideas upon you is to stand up and bloody his nose. Well, it's time that someone stood up and bloodied the Republic's nose!"

"Captain, that course is going to send us straight into their flagship."

"Then I suppose they'd better get out of our way, because I ain't stopping." The Ravisher careened towards the Republic fleet, then suddenly, with a jolt that threw everyone aboard to the deck, stopped. It was as if the ship had been grabbed by a large hand and held in space.

"What's going on?" Tobyn shouted as steam and smoke started to fill the bridge. "Report!"

"Our shields are gone, and our engines are dead," he heard someone say. "The Republic's demanding our surrender."

"Tell them to go to hell!"

"Captain, we can't do anything. They're going to board us one way or another."

"Then break out all our weapons," Tobyn said, though he found himself suddenly exhausted. "We'll fight them to the last man if we have to." He tried to stand, to present at least a façade of strength. But his legs turned to jelly, and a moment later, the darkness took him.

++++++++++++

That's all for now. I'll be starting Chapter 15 this weekend, though the post will likely be Sunday.

Force be with you,

Uh-oh.

Well, Tobyn's kind of nominally the bad guy, isn't he? So I guess it's not so bad. At any rate, if Tobyn's captured, it'll probably be easier for Ael to take over.

Azure: It's not that when I set out to write, I was thinking "weekend." That's just how it wound up working out.

Rogue_Pilot: Tobyn's as close to a bad guy as this fic has. Which, I suppose, says something about this, that there are no really "evil" characters.

Sil: Yeah, Tobyn's got something of a shock coming, doesn't he?

VaderLVR: You hit that nail on the head.

Chapter 15: Freedom

"When the Jedi arrived, I realized that the night was over, and a new day was ready to dawn. And I would be one of the first to see it." - Aelinor

There was a knock at the door, and my heart jumped into my throat. Tobyn was home, I thought. My mind raced, thinking of the plans that still were laid out in the dining room. My co-conspirators and I had arranged everything, planning a new government that would ensure that every woman had a say in her life. Hapes would have a government built on cooperation, on trust. The days of the wars between clans, of the blood feuds would be over.

Now, though, it seemed that everything we had worked for over the past few days, the intense planning sessions, the repeated votes as we struggled to choose one person to lead, all of it would be for nothing. I thought of the children, wondered how they would accept their new lives as slaves. I thought to Eyrwurth, who would surely be taken into the belly of one of Tobyn's ships, never to be seen again. I thought of my dear, sweet Bertram, wondered if Tobyn would give him to another to raise. I thought of Trista, who would likely be married off as discreetly as possible. And Aelizabet, what would become of her? Would she even remember me?

I brushed the tears from my eyes. If Tobyn had indeed arrived to discover the plans we'd made to wrest power from our husbands, then I would meet him face to face. I would accept my fate like the Lady of the House that I was, or the Queen Mother that I should have been. I made my way down the hall towards the stairs, expecting to hear a roar of rage. Instead, I found Anya standing there.

"Milady? The Master asks to speak with you."

"I imagine he does," I said. So Tobyn was going to play this quiet, was he? Well, if he thought I was going to willingly bow to his wishes, he had another thing coming. I'd been left to fend for myself for too much of the time I spent on Hapes to ever accept that I was weaker than he was. I was the one who saw our House through the difficult times, not him. "Tell my husband…"

"Milady, it's the Jedi Master who wants to speak to you."

"Jedi Master?" I asked, now thoroughly confused. "What Jedi Master?"

"The Jedi Master who brought Tobyn home. Someone at the spaceport told him to bring Tobyn here."

Perhaps all hadn't been lost. This wasn't how I'd expected to face my husband when the change took place. "Very well. Escort the Jedi Master to Tobyn's office. I will join him shortly." Anya turned, and headed down the stairs to do as I had told her. I took one more moment to fully compose myself, and then made my way down the stairs.

++++++++++++

That's all for now. More will be comign Wednesday.

Force be with you,

Queen Mother that she should have been?!? Somehow I don't think this will be over yet... and there will be more backstabbing to come.

So, the Jedi captured Tobyn and brought him home, this could get interesting. I think at this point, Tobyn might be a bit too preoccupied and tired to fight.

Short update, I hope for more soon.

All right, so he's home. And brought there by the Jedi no less. Hmmmm...could we be seeing the seeds of the dislike/distrust some of the Hapans have for the Jedi Order? thinking

Looking forward to more! applause

Sil: Perhaps they thought that the scales would be balanced best by letting his primary victims decide his fate?

VaderLVR: I hadn't intended for it to be seen that way, but I suppose it could. After all, it elevates Ael, and by the hand of a Jedi.

Rogue_Pilot: Things are going to be shaken up more than a bit in the posts to come.

Azure: A new day is indeed about to dawn for the Hapans.

Okay, here comes the next post!

"The days of the Lorell Raiders are therefore at an end," said Jedi Master Arca Jeth. "Their forces are in shambles, and they will hold sway over this section of space no longer. Captain L'Roux and his cretins will be taken back to Coruscant to stand trial for their multiple crimes. The Republic has authorized me to offer transport to all who have suffered in captivity."

"I appreciate you bringing my husband home, Master Jedi," I said. "But I must say that you have made your journey for little purpose. For some time, there has been a movement under way to change Hapes, to remove the criminal element from power. The time for us to take our campaign out of the shadows and into the light has arrived."

The white-eyed Jedi Master raised his eyebrows in what I could only imagine was surprise. "While this is a welcome turn of events, I do not wish you to make any decisions in haste."

"As I said, Master Jedi, this is a transformation, a revolution if you will, that has been simmering for some time. Your actions against my husband and the other Raiders has merely given us the chance to take our next steps without fear."

"Then I presume you do not wish to leave, to return to Tanaab."

"Hapes is now my home, Master Jedi. While Tanaab may be my homeworld, Hapes is my home. I cannot leave my children behind, and will not tear them away from everything they know. I suspect many of the other wives in the high Houses will feel the same way. However," I said, pausing momentarily, "there are some who will likely wish to return to their homeworlds. Most can be found in the slave markets, which I would not miss if you decided to eliminate them in accordance with Republic law."

"Can your society function without slaves?" Arca asked. "While it would technically be a violation of the law, I could see leaving the system in place for a time."

"I will not be party to stripping a sentient being of his or her rights any longer than I already have been." I turned, and called to Anya. She rushed to the doorway of the office. "Yes, milady?"

"You're free of the chains of servitude, free to return home. This Jedi Master is willing to take all of those captured in raids back to Coruscant, where the Senate will arrange to return you to your homes." I could see her face light up, and knew I was doing the right thing. "The same goes for all of you. I will not stand in the way of a single person who wishes to leave. It is the only gift I can give you."

"Free?" Anya asked.

"Free," I replied. "Now, if you'd like, I can arrange to have a car prepared to take you to the spaceport, so that you can be shuttle up to Master Jeth's ship. But for now, I'd like to ask you to pass the word on to the others. Anyone who wishes to leave Hapes is free to do so." For a moment, she just stood there. Then, without a word, she raced forward to embrace me, tears dampening my gown.

"Thank you, milady," she said, her voice breaking up her sobs. Then she rose, wiped her face, and raced from the room.

"This will not be easy," Arca said. "I fear that difficult times lie ahead of you."

"I've found that the most fulfilling things are never easy. And while the consequences of what I've done here today may not be easily overcome, the decision I have made could not have been easier."

++++++++++++

That'll do it for Chapter 15. The 16th and final chapter will begin this weekend.

Force be with you,

Tych_sel
