Title: Broken Hearts, Lonely hearts
Author: Gkilkenny
Characters: Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and others Cameo appearances of Bruck, and Xanatos
Genre: J.A. EU.
Rating: Angst/ rejection, and comfort.

Summary: Qui-Gon repudiates Obi-Wan and is determined not to take him back, Qui-Gon leaves Corruscant with a broken heart. Obi-Wan remains at the Temple on probation and tries to put Qui-Gon out of his life.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi, it grieves the Council to hear the accusations your Master has filed here before us today.” Master Windu indicated with a shake of his head. “We are shocked, that one who strived so hard to be a Jedi apprentice would refuse to obey his Master”

Obi-Wan kept his eyes focused on Master Windu; he could feel the anger and hurt feelings radiating from his Master Qui-Gon Jinn, and he could not bear to see the disappointment in his Masters eyes.

“Do you have anything to say, before Master Jinn concludes” Master Windu said expectantly hoping Obi-Wan would plead his case.

“No Master Windu” Obi-Wan said quietly.

Mace sighed and looked to his long time friend Qui-Gon. “Master Jinn, it is still your wish to repudiate your apprentice?”

Obi-Wan held his breath waiting for the words that would seal his fate, however if he had been looking at Master Windu instead of looking at the floor he would have noticed the almost pleading look Mace shot his friend Qui-Gon. Mace could not believe that Qui-Gon would stand there ready to repudiate his Padawan. Nevertheless, there was no swaying Qui-Gon; he had that determined look that brooked no argument.

“It is Master Windu”

Obi-Wan fidgeted, shifting from one foot to the other, trying to stand still while his Master repudiated him.

Qui-Gon continued to speak, citing that he had always known that the boy had too much anger in him, and was fool hardy, and unreliable. Qui-Gon indicated to the council members that if the decision to send Obi-Wan to the Agri-corps had stood; Obi-Wan would be on a path that he was destined for, and where he belonged. He brought up the fact that Obi-Wan did not obey orders, and recapped the times on Bandameer that he got into trouble for disobeying Qui-Gon’s commands. The Council listened to his version of events, and even while they listened, they sensed that Qui-Gon’s version veiled solely to Qui-Gon’s point of view.

It had always been a difficult choice for the Council to attempt to pair these two Jedi. The will of the force drew them together, and even the council felt the stirrings in the force. Obi-Wan’s inexperienced mind had latched onto Qui-Gon, and although the Master denied it. The force sanctioned it. The Council knew intuitively that Obi-Wan was the only initiate that would bring Qui-Gon out of his self-castigation where his last apprentice was concerned. They all knew how passionate he was in his dedication to the Jedi order, and yet he was so consumed by his perceived failures of the past that he couldn’t see the dedication in Obi-Wan.

The Council was in a quandary, and they felt obligated to reach a resolution between these two. However, they understood that Obi-Wan must also learn to control his emotions, and find his path as well. They had to reprimand him for straying. However, the Council did not intend to send the boy to the Agri-Corps.

The first time was just a ruse to get Qui-Gon to accept Obi-Wan, and he did. Although, the Council knew there was tension in their relationship, they were hopeful that Obi-Wans nature would bring out the best in Qui-Gon. However, Qui-Gon could not release his trepidation that Obi-Wan would turn, and although he accepted the fact that Obi-Wan did not turn to the dark side, his betrayal was just as painful, maybe even more so. He wanted to trust Obi-Wan yet he could not bring himself to do so, and that was Qui-Gon’s downfall.

Whereas Obi-Wans fault was, he tried too hard, and tried to rush his training. He believed that if he were the best at everything then Qui-Gon would truly accept him, and actually think of him as a worthy apprentice. Nevertheless, the more he tried the more Qui-Gon thought of him as unworthy.

Obi-Wan did not listen to his Masters words; it pained him to think about how stupid he had been. How could he have made such a monumental error in judgement? It was his mistake, and it would end his quest to be a Jedi. He knew his apprenticeship began shakily from the start, and it had not been easy forming a relationship with Qui-Gon. Things had happened, some of which he had no control over. However, he would not blame anyone but himself. His Master - no former Master now, had warned him that it would happen. Nevertheless, he ignored the warnings and fell into the trap.

Master Jinn expected Obi-Wan to turn against him, and yet like the arrogant young fool Obi-Wan was. He denied Qui-Gon’s expectations. Obi-Wan hid from reality, until reality reared its righteous head and proved his Master correct.

Melida/Dann had happened, and he had renounced his calling to be a Jedi, just as Qui-Gon proclaimed he would one day. He abandoned his life as a Jedi, for a group of young people fighting to survive against all odds. The young were struggling to secure peace to their once beautiful planet. Obi-Wan had refused to back down and return with his Master to Corruscant. He believed in the young’s cause, and he decided to stay with them and make a new life. However, sometimes what you believe to be a better life turns out to be the worst choice you could make in your entire short life.

Obi-Wan had hurt the one person that he had strived to prove his dedication too, the one person that he realised he loved like a Father, Qui-Gon. The man who knew Obi-Wan would betray him just like his last apprentice did. Obi-Wan had proven him right, and now he was ostracised. Qui-Gon had repudiated him.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi”

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” Obi-Wan lifted his head out of his musings when Master Windu said his name.

Master Windu waited until Obi-Wan looked at him before he continued. “You will go to the Knight on duty to be allocated a room; you are on probation until further notice.” Mace held out a folder, which Obi-Wan stepped forward and took. “You are excused, may the force be with you”

Obi-Wan stared down at the folder, he glanced around, and yet he could not speak for he knew his voice would crack if he did.

“You are excused Padawan Kenobi”

He walked numbly out of the Council chambers, he had no right to say he was devastated, nevertheless he was. He should have thought about his actions prior to executing them, and then maybe he would still be Qui-Gon’s apprentice. How impudent and selfish he was to think that Qui-Gon would understand and forgive him.

His mind was in turmoil, and he was embarrassed that he did not hear Master Windu call his name. The Jedi Master had to call his name twice before he looked up, and he almost dropped the folder Master Windu gave him. Obi-Wan assumed they all felt the same way as Master Jinn did. The Council were very strict when it came to apprentices obeying their Masters. They would not forgive Obi-Wan his indiscretion easily.

They were quite resolute about following the Code, and they were quite adamant about not forming attachments to those, the Jedi helped. Their only mission was to rescue Master Tahl, and then return to Corruscant. Not take sides in the internal affairs of a planet. Even if those affairs meant the killing of innocent beings, Obi-Wan wanted to help them and formed an attachment to one young girl called Cerasi, she and Obi-Wan became close friends, and when she died, Obi-Wan fell to pieces and realised he had made the biggest mistake of his life.

The Council doors closed behind Obi-Wan Kenobi, and as far as Qui-Gon was concerned, they did not close quickly enough. Qui-Gon shook his head. “I am requesting a mission, as I feel I need to get away from the Temple for a while”

“All missions have been allocated at the moment Qui-Gon, so you are relegated to instruct the Senior Padawan’s in their last tests before they become Knights. Three are ready for promotion. They are studying the writings of the Ancient order of the Whills. With your understanding and knowledge in this area, we ask that you test them over the next few days. We will note that you have requested a mission, and when one is available we shall contact you,” Master Windu stated.

“Very well Master, and now if you have nothing further to ask of me I shall retire.” He remarked.

“A Question I have for you Qui-Gon,” Master Gallia stated.

Qui-Gon turned to face the dark skinned Master. “Yes Master Gallia.”

“I want you to think about your answer before you give it Qui-Gon” She glanced at him and then around the room. Qui-Gon sensed it was a question on all their minds. He nodded and waited.

“Your training bond with Padawan Kenobi, has it been severed, and if it has, was he instructed to see the healers.”

Qui-Gon hesitated for he knew he had erred in his duty as a Jedi Master. He was morally obligated to refer any young force sensitive that had been unfortunate enough to have their bond severed, whether it was deliberate or by death of the Master. To the healers to make sure that the student did not suffer any lasting distress.

There was a long pause before he spoke. “I have failed to uphold my obligations, I did dissolve the bond. However, there was no apparent discomfort on his side. So I did not refer him to the healers”

“When did you sever the bond?” Master Kit Fisto asked.

“I dissolved it when I returned to Melida/Dann, not straight away because Obi-Wan had felt badly after his friend was killed, and he blamed himself. We worked together to find the ones responsible for the war and the death of his friend Cerasi. It wasn’t until we were heading back to Corruscant that I decided to close the bond.”

“Did you discuss it with Padawan Kenobi?” Kit continued.

“He asked me if I would take him back, I told him I would not. He reached out to the training bond. That is when I dissolved it.” Qui-Gon answered.

“What happened then Master Jinn?” Oppo Rancisis asked.

“He apologised for being disrespectful, and then he went to his cabin. He stayed there until we arrived at the Temple.”

“So you have no idea if he is suffering or not?” Rancisis queried.

Qui-Gon realised his fault, he had just ignored the boy. Did he even think about the possibility that Obi-Wan may be suffering. (Oh force in my haste to repudiate him I have not followed the code myself. How can I censure Obi-Wan when I committed an offence myself. “No Masters I do not know if he is suffering. Nevertheless he disobeyed me and I had no choice to dissolve the bond.”

“Hear your self do you Master Jinn?” Yoda berated.

“I am sorry Master, I do not understand?” Qui-Gon pleaded. He noticed all eyes were on him. He did not
realise what it was, that Master Yoda was referring too.

“Dissolve you did the bond, not severed.” Yoda was inferring that to dissolve a bond, it had to be soft and almost non-existent. Whereas, a severed bond occurs when the two parties have a strong bond and it is broken or cut off abruptly.

“A bond between Master and apprentice should be strong. Tell me Master Jinn, form a durable bond with young Obi-Wan - did you - when took him as your apprentice on Bandameer?”

Qui-Gon felt humiliated; he had felt the vibrant bond on Obi-Wan’s side; however, Qui-Gon refused to complete the bond on his side, just in case he changed his mind about taking Obi-Wan.

“In truth I held back, I was uncertain of his commitment; my bond with him was tenuous. Although I sensed his strong, desire to complete his side of the training bond. However, I had my doubts about him, and so I was not only protecting myself, but him. It has only been a few months since Bandameer, and we were still finding our way”

“More than enough time it was, if truly wished to bond with him you did” Yoda confirmed as he nodded to Mace Windu.

“You are excused Master Jinn, you have your wish. You are no longer Padawan Kenobi’s Master.
May the Force be with you.” Mace Windu declared.

Qui-Gon glanced around the room all eyes were boring into him, and he felt like running out of the room just so he could escape their accusing eyes. However, he was always the staunch and rigid Jedi. Therefore, he kept his features blank and bowed to them.

“May the force be with you also Masters” and then he walked briskly out the door.

I hope he comes to realize that he's made a very great mistake and that they really belong together. Maybe if someone else starts to train him, Qui-Gon might open his eyes.

Good job.

Yoda needs to whack Qui-gon on his shins about a hundred times for being so bloody stupid! How could he say those terrible things about Obi-wan, when himself has been so, so cruel and cold towards the boy! What really gets me is that he actually reaslizes his mistakes, but he does not see them as "mistakes" but just him not following the Code, does he have any idea what damage he could have or has done to a young soul/mind/life of Obi-wan's? I hope Mace or Yoda or someone kicks some sense into him!

Great start, to a fabulous story! It makes me very happy to read this time period in Obi-wan's and Qui-gon's life, it's filled with great angst! lol Lvoe it! Please continue as soon as you can! And if you have a PM list, may I please be added to it? Thank you!

words in italics are thoughts

.....

The Councillors sat in contemplation as the doors closed behind Qui-Gon, finally Master Gallia broke the silence.

“So where do we go from here?” she asked as she looked around. “We cannot allow Obi-Wan to think that his infraction of disobeying his Master is sanctioned, and yet I for one can see why the boy was led to distraction. I have taught some of Obi-Wan’s classes and he was always dedicated to the path of a Jedi. However, he was insecure about his place, and I can imagine that the pull of comradeship and the need to feel wanted, is what drew Obi-Wan to the young people on Melida/Daan.”

Several Councillors nodded in agreement, and Mace Windu leaned forward in his chair ready to speak.

“We will keep Obi-Wan on probation, and work with him to build up his confidence. I feel he truly regrets his decision, and I am certain this would not have happened had Qui-Gon acted as the seasoned Jedi he should be. The boy is full of despondency, and I think it stems from Qui-Gon’s initial refusal to choose him.
I know it was apparent to us that the force wanted them together. However, I still believe we were wrong in pushing him onto Qui-Gon. I have known Qui-Gon for a long time, and he can be very stubborn when he puts his mind to it. Qui-Gon hasn’t come to his senses yet, and now we have a disturbed young boy to contend with because of Qui-Gon’s failure to let the past go.”

Master Yaddle nodded in agreement. “We cannot show Padawan Kenobi any favouritism, especially in front of the other initiates and Padawan’s. Otherwise, they will think it is all right to disagree with their Masters, and turn their backs on their training whenever it suits them. Nevertheless, we must watch him closely. His state of mind is fragile and we don’t want to lose him to either the Dark side or to the force.”

“It is agreed then, we shall be mindful of Obi-Wan, and hope that Qui-Gon sees what we see in the young boy, and changes his mind,” Mace stated……

Obi-Wan walked aimlessly down the halls; He wondered what they all really thought of him. He noticed them staring at him, and he thought some had looks of compassion, or was it pity. Stop it! I cannot think like that, they haven’t banished me from the temple. I am on probation, which means I have to prove my self-worthy. I can do that. I must do it….. Although, who will train me if I survive probation. I do not know of any Masters who are looking for an apprentice, especially one who cannot be trusted Obi-Wan’s steps took him to the Quarters allocation office.

“Hello Obi-Wan isn’t it?” the Knight behind the counter said.

“Yes Master, I am Obi-Wan Kenobi, I was sent to you for relocation.”

“Yes I know, Master Windu commed me. I am Knight T’un, and I have assigned you quarters in the Knights section, level four. Do you know where that is?”

“No Knight T’un, I don’t, I’m sorry”

“That’s alright Obi-Wan, I will take you there myself, and make sure you know the codes and have everything you need.” He said.

Knight T’un and Obi-Wan walked through the Temple and when they reached, the first turbo-lift Obi-Wan stopped.

“We are not using this one Obi-Wan; this turbo goes to the western wing, which is where the Master / Padawan teams reside.”

Obi-Wan nodded solemnly and kept walking; they passed the training rooms, and another turbo lift. This one went to the Northern wing, which held the cafeteria, healers ward, and the initiates’ rooms.
Therefore, that left the eastern section, because the South side held the Council chambers and archives. Obi-Wan wondered why they did not allocate him a room in the initiate’s wing. Technically, he was not a Padawan anymore, and he assumed he would get a room with the other initiates.
The eastern section of the Temple housed the newly minted Knights and those who rarely stayed at the Temple. They walked towards the elevator, and Obi-Wans morbid thoughts supposed they were hiding him away from everyone, and mainly, keeping him as far away from Qui-Gon as possible. Probably do not want me bumping into him, in case I cause him any more trouble

When they stepped out of the turbo lift, it was very quiet, and Obi-Wan felt a wave of loneliness wash over him. He supposed most of the Knights were too busy to be hanging around the hallways; they were probably out on missions.

As he followed Knight T’un down the hall, he wondered if Qui-Gon would stay in the Temple for a while and teach. Probably not, he would want to get as far away from Obi-Wan as possible. Obi-Wan sighed and continued to follow the Knight to his new quarters.

“Here we are Padawan Kenobi, the door is voice activated, so just speak your name into this slot, and I will confirm your identity, and set the code for you.”

Obi-Wan nodded and said his name, and after Knight T’un set the code, the door opened and Obi-Wan stepped in.

“These apartments aren’t as big as the Master /Padawan rooms; however they are big enough for one person. Through that door is your bedroom, with a small fresher off to the side. This main room serves as your leisure and study area, as you can see over on that side is your kitchenette. You will mainly eat your meals in the dinning halls; however, you can bring food up here, and keep it for several days in this small icebox. There is a kettle for a cup of caff, and you can get provisions from the stores.

“Thank you Knight T’un” Obi-Wan bowed.

“You will be fine Obi-Wan, and if you have any questions, I am always available. Here is my comlink number.” Knight T’un handed it to Obi-Wan as he left.

Obi-Wan felt relieved to be alone, because ever since they set foot back on Corruscant he had been trailing behind Qui-Gon. Following him to the Council chambers, or waiting outside the Chambers while they discussed his transgressions, or in the Council chambers, listening to Qui-Gon tell them about his disrespectful attitude.

He placed the folder on the table and sat down to read it. The Council had given him a copy of the code to read. Another paper was an appointment with the Council; for his formal reprimand regarding his insolent behaviour towards his Master. It cited his responsibilities and duties, which he had failed to observe. One point that pained him most was, ‘Drawing your weapon in anger towards your Master.’
He shook his head. I wish I had not done that, I was not angry. I was desperate for him to see my point of view. I thought if he saw how determined I was to help the young he would change his mind and help them. I should have realised nothing I did would ever make him see me as a worthy apprentice. My point of view was not important to him at all
Obi-Wan did not understand why they did not just send him packing. Master Qui-Gon certainly didn’t paint a very nice picture of him in the chambers.

He finished reading everything, and realised it was midday mealtime and he was hungry. It dawned on him that he hadn’t eaten since yesterday. He put his small bag of possessions in the cupboard in his room, and noted down the supplies he needed to make this very empty apartment at least comfortable. He would have lunch and then go to the stores...

The youngest initiates ate first and once they left the dining room, older initiates, Padawan’s, Knights, and Masters entered the dining room and ate. Obi-Wan waited in the hall while the young children filed past him out of the dining room. Several other Padawan’s and older initiates came up along side him and stood waiting as well. One of the boys, Bruck Chun, was just a week away from going back to Telos with his Father, there had not been a Master for him, and he had elected to return home to his family.

When Obi-Wan left to go to the Agri-corps Bruck gloated to his friends that he would be Qui-Gon’s apprentice. However, in the end Obi-Wan came back as Qui-Gon’s apprentice, and Bruck felt humiliated. He hated Obi-Wan for returning, so he decided to pick on him.

“So Mr high and mighty Kenobi, how does it feel to know you have ruined your chances to be a Jedi? You had it made, you had the best Master in the order, and you had to show him what an idiot you really are,” Bruck whispered quietly in his ear.

Obi-Wan knew Bruck was baiting him, and he knew he could not take the bait. Therefore, he ignored Bruck. It was hard, because for some reason Bruck’s taunts always hit him hard. Nevertheless, he had more at stake than to worry about what Bruck had to say.

Bruck’s anger rose. “Hey Oafy-Wan are you deaf, I know you heard me - I said you are an idiot!”

The initiates had passed by, and so the older learners started to move towards the dining hall. However, some of them stopped, waiting for Obi-Wan to answer Bruck.

“No Bruck I am not deaf, and I don’t feel high and mighty, and ‘yes’ you are correct. I had the best Master in the order and ‘yes’ I have probably ruined my chance to be a Jedi. So I guess you are right.” he answered and turned around and walked away from the boys.

He could hear them laugh at some thing Bruck must have said, yet he did not want to hang around to find out what it was. He took another corridor that would lead to the dining hall, hoping that he would not meet anyone else who wanted to berate him.
Unfortunately, his luck had left him. Siri came out from another corridor, she was a new Padawan, and very rules orientated. He had spoken to her once or twice, and so he smiled and said “Hello Siri”

“Well, if it isn’t Obi-Wan Kenobi! You have a nerve coming back here as if you did nothing wrong. How could you disobey your Master; I thought you wanted to be a Jedi. I don’t understand how you could turn on Master Jinn like that.”

“I didn’t turn on him Siri?”

“You left him, you disobeyed him, how much worse can it get! You Left the Jedi - you threw away your twelve years of training. Every teacher that gave you their time will be thinking that they wasted it. How many times will the Masters look at their Padawan’s and think, ‘will my Padawan do what he did?” She snapped.

Obi-Wan felt his face redden. He hadn’t thought of the consequences of his actions to the rest of the order. He had made the wrong decision, and now he would see it in every Masters eyes, he had betrayed them all.

His eyes sparkled with unshed tears, and he apologised. “I’m sorry”

“So you ought to be!” she huffed, and stormed away.

Nice update! applause I get the feeling that Obi needs a big hug and I would be glad to volunteer. hugs

I also think that Obi is in for a hard, rocky journey in the near future, especially with some of his peers.

Great job and I'm looking forward to more!

Wow. Gosh, that rant from Bruck, but mainly Siri was the verbal translation of a smack in the face! Poor Obi-wan, he must feel the weight of the world crashing down upon him. But, I love that he actually feels his remorse and feels guilt for his actions, it shows what a kind heart he has, and the true potential to be a great Jedi, and person.

I liked how you took the time to describe where the different lifts went too, very interesting. Especially, since they let Obi-wan have his own apartment at age 13, while on probabtion, that seems quite unheard of, isn't he a little young to live by himself? Anyhoo, I wonder what the Council's purpose is in this action.

I hope the Council has not make a grievable mistake with not telling Obi-wan how they truly feel about him. Why can't they just give him the encouragement and love that he needs! Gah! Aha. Love the angst.

Great chapter! Thank you so much for the update and the PM! I can't wait for more! I hope Obi-wan doesn't cause himself too much self-inflicted harm!
