Poor kid. He probably thinks everyone is against him, especially after Siri. At least he stood up to Bruck and acted with calm. I just hope he doesn't do something stupid like run away.

Good job.

He stared at Siri as she walked away, and waited until she entered the dining hall, and then he slowly continued towards the room. He filled his tray with food, and he glanced around, feeling self-conscious. It appeared that every eye in the room was on him. He saw Bant wave him over to their table; he didn’t really want to go over there, but he knew she would chase after him and insist. Therefore, Obi-Wan walked quickly to the table, he hesitated when he saw Siri sitting next to Bant. He did not want to start an argument, and he knew she had spoken the truth, and it made him ashamed. He wondered if it would be best if he did not embarrass them by sitting with them.

However, Bant stood up and indicated, “Here, sit here Obi”

Garen also stood up, “Hi Obi, it is good to see you”

Obi-Wan smiled and thought How did I get such good friends as Bant and Garen. I really do not deserve their friendship

There was a spare seat opposite Garen, and another spare seat opposite Siri. Obi thought better of sitting right opposite her, and so he sat down opposite Garen. “Thanks” he said quietly not really looking at them.

“Are you all-right Obi-Wan?” Bant asked, concern lacing her voice.

“Yes I’m fine”

“What did the Council say, about …. Well you know - ‘leaving Qui-Gon.” Garen asked quietly.

“I have been put on probation, and they are going to call me to the Chambers soon to discuss my penalty”

“What about Master Jinn! After all it was mostly his fault!” Bant growled.

“Yeah” Garen agreed.

Siri looked up at her words, and Obi-Wan could tell she was getting annoyed with Bant. He didn’t want a fight to start over him and Qui-Gon.

“Please Bant don’t… it wasn’t Master Jinn’s fault, it was mine, I sent him away. I was the one who wanted to stay on Melida/Daan”

“Obi-Wan you know as well as I do that if he had treated you better, you wouldn’t have left him!” Bant exclaimed.

Obi-Wan couldn’t talk her out of her condemnation of Qui-Gon, no matter how he tried to change the subject. Bant was like a Krayt Dragon out after blood, and she wanted everyone else to know that it wasn’t Obi-Wan’s fault that he left.

Obi-Wan had told her of his rocky start with Qui-Gon, and how the Master was very distant and cold towards him. He would compare Obi-Wan to his former apprentice Xanatos all the time. He even hinted that Obi-Wan would turn out just like him. Obi-Wan even told her about Qui-Gon’s refusal to open up and bond with him. Obi-Wan’s side of their bond had been striving to form into a solid foundation. However, a solid wall of regret and blame on Qui-Gon’s side was blocking it.
Obi-Wan could not help but hear Bant defending him, and he felt sick. Obi-Wan’s headache distracted him from the conversation, and although he had been relatively successful in pushing the dull ache of the severed bond to the back of his conscious thought, now with Bant discussing Qui-Gon, pain flared just behind his eyes.

The pain seemed to be getting worse, the previous time, pain had erupted in his head, was just before they landed on Corruscant. Obi-Wan pulled out his river stone, which Qui-Gon had given him for his birthday. It seemed to dull the pain. Obi-Wan hoped it would work again, and so he unclipped his safety pouch where he kept the stone, and held it tight in his hand. Bant was continuing to tell Siri about what a mean Master Qui-Gon was. Obi-Wan blocked the sound out, and he tried to concentrate on his stone, squeezing it tighter.

Abruptly, Bruck Chun plonked him self down next to Obi-Wan. “Give it a rest Bant, you cannot convince me or Siri that Qui-Gon was anything but a good Master. It’s just that Obi-Wan wasn’t good enough for him, right Oafy-wan?”

Siri glared at Bruck, she may have been angry at Obi-Wan; however, she did not like Bruck at all. “Mind your own business Bruck!” Siri snapped.

“What! Don’t tell me you believe that trifle Bant is telling you?” Bruck sneered.

“It is none of your business what I believe! But one thing is for sure, I don’t believe anything you might tell me, so get lost Bruck”

Obi-Wan finally concentrated on the voices around him, and he realised they were arguing. He couldn’t take anymore.

“Please stop arguing, it was my fault so blame me - I do!” He stood up and slipped his stone into his outer pocket forgetting it had a hole in it. He picked up his tray and went to take it to the receptacle. He stepped away from the table; however, Bruck put his foot out, tripping Obi-Wan over. The sound of the tray and boy, and several chairs crashing to the floor caused every one in the dining hall to stop their own chatter and look at Obi-Wan who was just getting up. A chorus of giggles erupted in the room.
However, several Masters stood up and coughed loudly, bringing silence back to the hall.

Qui-Gon was sitting at the other side of the room with Mace and several other Padawan-less Masters. He heard the commotion and turned to see Obi-Wan struggling to his feet. Obi-Wan’s face turned a bright shade of red, as he moved quickly towards the door, rushing out. Qui-Gon felt a stab of remorse rush through him. He did feel sorry for the boy, and he knew it was going to be hard on Obi-Wan, trying to find his place within the order. He doubted very much if Obi-Wan had the resolve to continue.

Qui-Gon watched him disappear out the door, and it brought up the memory of the meeting he had with the Council earlier this morning.
(“Dissolve you did the bond, not severed.” Yoda was inferring that to dissolve a bond, it had to be soft and almost non-existent. Whereas, a severed bond occurs when the two parties have a strong bond and it is broken or cut off abruptly.

“A bond between Master and apprentice should be strong. Tell me Master Jinn, form a durable bond with young Obi-Wan - did you - when took him as your apprentice on Bandameer?”

Qui-Gon felt humiliated; he had felt the vibrant bond on Obi-Wan’s side; however, Qui-Gon refused to complete the bond on his side, just in case he changed his mind about taking Obi-Wan.

“In truth I held back, I was uncertain of his commitment; my bond with him was tenuous. Although I sensed his strong, desire to complete his side of the training bond. However, I had my doubts about him, and so I was not only protecting myself, but him. It has only been a few months since Bandameer, and we were still finding our way”
He remembered Yoda’s scathing comment “More than enough time it is, if truly wished to bond with him it is”

Qui-Gon realised he was the only one still standing and he quickly sat down. He glanced at Mace whose glacial stare seemed to freeze him where he sat.

Nevertheless, Qui-Gon quickly looked away, and spoke without looking back at Mace. “I will refer Obi-Wan to the healers after lunch,”

The other Masters nodded, however, the rest of their lunch continued in silence.

Bruck Chun was still chuckling “Did you see him go down. He is such a bumbling fool!” He laughed and bent his head, and that is when he saw Obi-Wan’s river stone on the floor. He picked it up and hid it for a moment, and when everyone settled down, he leant across the table. Bant got up to go after Obi-Wan, when Bruck grabbed her arm.

“You shouldn’t stick up for him, you know; he’s not worth it. He does not even care about the naming day present Qui-Gon gave him. I know if a Master gave me a present from their home planet, I would not give it away, I would keep it.”

“What are you talking about?” Bant snapped.

“I’m talking about Obi-Wans river stone; the shiny one with the blue veins through it. You know his stone don’t you?” Bruck smirked.

“Of course we know it” Garen snapped back as he stood up to go with Bant, his patience with Bruck had ended.

“Well I spoke to him earlier, and he had the stone in his hand. I said I liked it, and he gave it to me….see!” Bruck held it up.

“You’re a liar” both Bant and Garen said at once.

“How did you get his stone?” Bant insisted.

“I told you he gave it to me” He rolled it around his fingers.

“Give it to me!” Bant exclaimed.

“No its mine!” he snapped back, getting up, and walking away from the table.

Bant was fuming, and Garen grit his teeth. “Don’t worry Bant, I will go after him and take it back”

Siri shook her head. “You two should mind your own business; let them sort out their own problems. I think there are more important things for Obi-Wan to worry about, rather than some old rock that his former Master gave him!”

Bant wanted to disagree, however the dining hall was emptying, and they, like many others had a class to attend. They did not have time to chase after Obi-Wan or Bruck for that matter, and Bant did not know Obi-Wan’s com unit number. Nor did she know where he was staying, so she resigned herself to going to class, and speak to Obi-Wan later.

Bruck hurried to the other side of the room and stood with one of his friend’s just inches from Qui-Gon’s back.
“Hey Rogan, look what Obi-Wan Kenobi gave me. He told me he didn’t want it anymore, isn’t this the rock that his Master gave him.” He said loud enough for Qui-Gon to hear.

Rogan stated, “What would you want a rock for, hey there’s Master Jinn, just give it back to him.”

Bruck turned around and smiled at the mentioned Master, who had half turned in his seat looking at the stone.

“Oh hello Master Jinn, I guess I should give you this, Obi-Wan didn’t want it, and I don’t want it either. So you can have it back” he placed it on the table. “I have to go now; I don’t want to be late for class”

Both boys rushed off, and Qui-Gon picked up the stone. For a minute, his anger flared at the thought of Obi-Wan rejecting the stone. He thought back to the day he gave it to Obi-Wan.

The boy had been distracted; it was their first mission together. Qui-Gon tested Obi-Wan on his surroundings and asked the boy several questions. He wanted to see if Obi-Wan were alert, and yet Qui-Gon could sense something was on Obi-Wans mind.
“You seem distracted Padawan; I sincerely hope you can focus on the mission in front of us, as you know, danger could be lurking at any given point.”

Obi-Wan looked up at his new Master, it was his thirteenth naming day, and Qui-Gon had not mentioned it. Nor had he given Obi-Wan and indication that he knew what day it was.

“I suppose I am distracted” Obi-Wan remarked feeling guilty, wanting Qui-Gon to acknowledge his thirteenth naming day. He wondered if Qui-Gon even knew about his birthday. Master Yoda always remembered his birthday, and made sure he found the time to acknowledge the passing of another year, and he even meditated with Obi-Wan.
Qui-Gon waited for an answer, and Obi-Wan realised he sounded conceited in expecting his Master to remember his birthday when there were more important things to discuss.

“I-I am sorry Master, I will concentrate on the mission before us. I realise my thoughts were drifting to an unimportant matter.” Obi-Wan stood to attention and remarked. “I am focused now Master, shall we proceed?”

Qui-Gon felt the disappointment through the force, and abruptly he remembered that today was Obi-Wans naming day. He had forgotten, what with the Bandameer episode, and discovering Xanatos still wanted revenge. The ceremony to take Obi-Wan as his apprentice happened in such a rush that he had not thought about the traditional gift one bestows upon their apprentice. He should give him something to mark the day and mark the beginning of their journey together. He racked his brain, and abruptly his hand went to the utility pouch at the back of his belt. Of course, the stone he had found in the river of light on his home planet. A very remarkable stone and the colours altered with changes in the weather, he had forgotten he had it.

“Perhaps your thoughts were drifting to a special event in your life Padawan?”

Obi-Wan’s face blushed, and he blinked several times.

“Perhaps your distraction is important - Padawan, maybe a naming day?”

Obi-Wan could not help but smile, his Master had remembered.

“Yes Master, I am thirteen today”

“Ah then, you would be thinking whether or not I plan to give you something?”

“The thought crossed my mind Master”

“I should not keep you waiting then, Padawan”

Qui-Gon had fumbled with the latch on the pouch while he was talking, and finally got the pouch open. The clip had rusted, and so Qui-Gon used the force to break it. He held his hand out and young Obi-Wan held his own hand out to receive his present.
At first Obi-Wan’s excitement fell as the stone plopped into his hand. It was a stone; Qui-Gon had given him a stone. He stared at it and unexpectedly it began to sparkle, and the blue veins shone brighter. The stone itself was smooth and flat, and as Obi-Wan held it in the sun, it changed colours. The navy cobalt base had tiny veins of colour and as he turned it, they changed from pale blue to green. Obi-Wan felt a tingling sensation in his hand and a look of pure joy filled his face when he realised it was force sensitive.

The stone had been in Qui-Gon’s possession for twenty years, ever since his first mission as a Knight. Obi-Wan said he loved it, and would keep it with him forever. It hurt Qui-Gon to think Obi-Wan would give the stone away. It was another falsehood committed by Obi-Wan, which further aggravated Qui-Gon. How was it that both his apprentices could blatantly lie to him?

Of course Bruck has to go and mess things up even more! Poor Obi-Wan. Qui-Gon's rejection had little to do with him, I think. Qui-Gon didn't want to set himself up again to be hurt, he didn't want to care so he took the first opportunity to reject Obi-Wan. The kid made a mistake, everyone makes mistakes. Yes, it wasn't a little mistake, but a mistake as it is. And Obi-Wan is only thirteen! Does he expect a thirteen year old not make any errors in judgement?

Great story! Can't wait for more!

Qui-Gon's going to be feeling mighty foolish when he learns the truth: Obi-Wan lost his precious stone.

I hope Garen learns where the stone went and explains to Qui-Gon that Bruck is a liar and has only ever been out to hurt Obi-Wan. sad

Another wonderful addition to an already great story! happy

Oh, I don't know who to feel the sorryiest for. Poor Obi-wan, and poor Qui-gon, but then again it was partly his faught, but Jedi or not he still has feelings. Gosh, if he wasn't so self-centered he would realize Bruck was lying to him.

I hope Siri smacks Bruck or lets Bant or Garen. Aha. I hope Bruck gets what is coming to him eventually, just don't make Obi-wan pay for it, then again that would be great angst. lol

I truly loved this chapter. Just awesome.

Sorry for so sort a review I'm supposed to be studing for an exam.

Aha. Can't wait for the next chapter! Please update as soon as you can, and thank you for the PM! grin

Obviously Qui-Gon doesn't want to get hurt again. Xanatos's turning must have hurt him terribly. Bruck is just being mean but at least 3 people know about his lies. I just hope someone will set Qui-Gon straight about it.

Good job.
