I'm glad to see that Obi-Wan had to face his fears and find that they had all forgiven him. Even Cerasi would not have wanted him to feel guilty about what happened.

Great job.

It's so very sad to read how much anguish Obi-Wan carries through his guilt.

Qui-Gon's right in making his padawan confront his feelings headon and come to terms with Cerasi's death.

Well done! Nicely written.

Qui-Gon memories of Melida/Daan surfaced as they landed and lowered the ramp. Qui-Gon knew if he’d been supportive of Obi-Wan, things might’ve been different. He’d seen the confusion in Obi-Wans eyes, and he knew Obi-Wan didn’t understand why there was so much senseless killing.

Qui-Gon felt the boy’s commitment slipping and he did nothing to guide him. He should’ve pulled the boy aside and given him direction. Instead, he’d accused him of breaking his trust. Qui-Gon almost willed the betrayal to happen, and therein laid his fault.

Truer words were never spoken.

Obi-Wan put his hand in his lap and sighed. “I wasn’t expecting that reception. He seemed happy to see me. I thought there’d be some anger; after all, he cared a great deal for Cerasi.”

Qui-Gon nodded, “He’s moved on, and has put his grief behind him. Her sacrifice inspired him to be a better person, and he has an important role to play in the rebuilding of Melida/Daan. He honours her memory by doing that to the best of his ability.”

Obi-Wan’s anger flared. “How can he just forget her, like she didn’t exist?”

“I didn’t say he had forgotten her. On the contrary, she is alive in everything they rebuild”

That's right, Obi-Wan, Ceresi lives on in so many ways - her legacy is peace and happiness.

Wow, that was such a wonderful chapter! love

Poor Obi-Wan, it was so hard for him to go back to Melida/Daan, but at least this time he had Qui-Gon's love and support, unlike the first time.

“Master, I’m sorry for blaming you for Cerasi’s death. I let my anger cloud my judgement and I’m ashamed of myself. Can you forgive me?”

Qui-Gon rested his hand on Obi-Wan’s shoulder, “Padawan, there is nothing to forgive. You were hurting and I should’ve helped you deal with the pain. I’m the one to ask for your forgiveness.”

Obi-Wan smiled, “Then we shall forgive each other.”

Qui-Gon embraced his Padawan, “I agree my Padawan and I’m very proud of you.” Their mission here was complete. Obi-Wan had found acceptance for Cerasi’s death and could move on now. It was time to leave.
love love

I'm so glad Obi-Wan is finally at peace. love

Obi-Wan gently touched the view screen with the palm of his hand as Melida/Daan disappeared from view; he glanced at Qui-Gon. His Master’s nimble fingers adjusted the controls of their skiff. He felt a chill coming from his hand and it trembled as he dropped it to his side. He imagined her smiling at him and he somehow felt she was content; he’d been fortunate to know her. “Goodbye,” he whispered.

Obi-Wan sighed, releasing his sorrow to the Force and turned away from the view screen. His master sat on his right visibly displaying calmness and self-control as he concentrated on the instruments. Obi-Wan wondered if he would ever achieve that level of control. His control seemed to depend on his emotional state at the time. He knew in his heart that he tended to make impetuous decisions; acting without considering the consequences. He had doubts and conflicting emotions about their pact to forgive each other. Forgiveness was one thing trust was another.
Fear rose in his gut, what if I shatter his trust in me again. Waves of despair filled him, what if I can’t trust him.

***

Qui-Gon felt Obi-Wans despair trickle through their bond. Obi-Wan had impressive shields in place, but even so, Qui-Gon’s keen sense told him something was amiss. He could see beads of sweat forming on Obi-Wans forehead; he checked the temperature inside the cockpit, which was fine. Qui-Gon had noticed Obi-Wan’s hand resting on the window.
The movement brought Qui-Gon out of his own brooding thoughts. He hadn’t dared to move or change his facial expression, because inside he felt his own anxieties surfacing. Their next destination would be a test in itself. He’d told Obi-Wan that he trusted him, and he did. Nevertheless, had he pushed Obi-Wan to his limits? Could Obi-Wan put his past behind him and could Qui-Gon erase the past. He chided himself; no one can erase the past, just learn from it and move on. There was some unfinished business, the matter of a light sabre. It was time they discussed building a new one, and Qui-Gon didn’t want to fail his student again.

“Padawan, are you alright?”

“Yes Master,” he sighed.

Qui-Gon knew they could easily fall back into the old ways if he allowed it. Obi-Wan’s confidence was fragile, “Padawan, let me rephrase the question. Tell me what is troubling you?”

Obi-Wan blushed, “I’m alright Master. It just felt strange watching the planet disappear. For so long I’ve blamed my self for Cerasi’s death that I didn’t think of Melida/ Daan and its future. I’ve said my goodbyes to Cerasi, and I know the planet's future is safe; I’m ready to move forward now. However, I’m very nervous about going back to the Temple. I don’t feel that I’m ready, but I’m not sure what makes me feel that way.”

“Obi-Wan, we aren’t going back to Coruscant just yet. We have one very important mission that requires our attention. I hope it will clear any residual fears, you may have about being my apprentice.”

Obi-Wan felt butterflies invade his stomach, he wondered if Qui-Gon heard through their bond about the trust thing. “I‘m not sure I know what you mean Master?”

“You are a Jedi Padawan, and you don’t have a light sabre.”

Obi-Wan felt the butterflies die and sink to the pit of his stomach. “Oh” he sighed. “I’m sorry that I destroyed my sabre Master, I suppose I can ask Master Yoda for my crystal and I can make another one.”

“That isn’t what I have in mind my Padawan. It is tradition for the Master to guide his apprentice in building his light sabre… Tell me Padawan; are you ready to build one?”

“Y-yes, I am Master.”

“Then I’d be honoured to take you to Ilum in search of a crystal and guide you in constructing a sabre fitting an apprentice of mine.”

“Ilum, Master! Oh Master, are you sure I’m worthy of such an honour?”

“Obi-Wan!” Qui-Gon lifted and eyebrow, “Of course you’re a worthy student and it’s my privilege to assist you.”

Obi-Wan smiled, his skin tingled from excitement. “It’s every padawan’s dream to acquire a crystal from such a sacred place.”

“Yes, I know Padawan. When I was an apprentice, it was my dream as well.
Nevertheless, my master didn’t think it was that important and we made one at the temple. However, when I reached Knighthood, I went to Ilum on my own and made a new one. It was an exciting time and I’m looking forward to sharing this experience with you.”

***

Ilum came into view and its pale blue brilliance always amazed Qui-Gon. He could feel the excitement rise in Obi-Wan as their ship inched closer to the frozen planet. He set course for a mountain range rising out of the snow like a majestic ice castle. A feeling of amazement and awe filtered through his bond with Obi-Wan as the boy gazed upon the mountain in front of him. Qui-Gon felt insignificant in the presence of such a revered place him self, and he sent his own feelings of joy back to Obi-Wan.

He punched a code into the computer and Obi-Wan’s face lit up with surprise as a large steel door slowly opened, revealing an enormous hanger. Qui-Gon guided the skiff to a perfect landing inside.

“Master this is incredible. When did the Jedi build this place?”

“The hanger and adjoining accommodations were built many hundreds of years ago, my young Padawan and the caves are a few hundred metres away down in the valley.”

Obi-Wan couldn’t take his eyes off the hanger, “It is so big Master. I think you could fit a battle cruiser in here.”

“Yes, it is quite big, but I hope we never have the need to land a battle cruiser here though.” Qui-Gon smiled.

“Now, before we leave the ship and explore Ilum. I want you to try on the clothing I purchased on Melida/Daan?”

“Clothing Master, what sort of clothing?”

“The temperature outside is freezing Obi-Wan. So I brought along some suitable boots and robes.” Qui-Gon explained, as he pulled the bag of clothes out.

Obi-Wan laughed when he saw Qui-Gon’s fur lined boots, and woolly robe, which made Qui-Gon look like a very large Bantha. “You look funny.”

“Oh, really Padawan, you think my clothes look funny do you! Wait until you put yours on. Somehow I think you’ll disappear under all that fur.”

“Master I can hardly see where I’m going, is this really necessary?” Obi-Wan said as he squirmed. He looked like a little ball of fluff.

“Not inside the hanger and certainly not in the caves Padawan. Nevertheless, the walk to the caves although only short, will be quite cold. How would it look if I let you freeze to death on our first adventure?”

“Our first adventure Master, but we’ve been on missions before,” Obi-Wan hesitated; he felt uncomfortable bringing up the past.

“Obi-Wan, this is a new beginning for us and even though we had a past together. I believe we need to start fresh, don’t you?” Qui-Gon smiled and put his hands on Obi-Wan’s shoulders.

“I do want to put the past behind me, but I’m still not sure about some of my feelings.”

“I know that you still feel unworthy of your place in the order and most of that was my doing. However, I have faith in you Padawan. Now let’s look around shall we?”

They left their fur lined clothes in the ship and donned their regular robes. Walking through the hanger Obi-Wan looked at the amount of barrels and boxes lining the walls.

“Master what are the barrels and boxes for?”

“They’re filled with provisions and fuel for our return trip. All this equipment comes from Coruscant. It’s stored here specifically for Jedi’s use. When a Knight visits Ilum, he determines what supplies are running low and takes the list back to the temple. The next visitor replenishes the stock.”

“How long do you think we will be here Master?”

“For as long as it takes Padawan, why, are you in a hurry to leave?”

“No Master, I’m just anxious to see the crystal caves, can we go now?”

“No Padawan, we’ll go tomorrow. Today we have to take inventory of the supplies required and refuel the skiff.”

“But Master, the day is early and it appears that there are ample provisions. Couldn’t we refuel tomorrow and go to the caves today?”

Qui-Gon studied his apprentice; the boy was gaining confidence, but his impatience required curbing.

“You must have patience Padawan, appearances can be deceiving. We wouldn’t want to run into trouble, and not have enough fuel to leave here now would we?”

Obi-Wan knew he was impatient. Nevertheless, he wanted to see the caves; he’d heard so much about them. However, one look at his Masters stance, told him that he would lose this argument if he were to continue.

He sighed and folded his arms across his chest. ‘Very well Master, but what trouble could we have. These caves have been secure for hundreds of years. It’s not like we’re going to get attacked!”

Qui-Gon raised his brow, and reached for a data pad. “You never know Padawan. Here, you start writing and I’ll count.”

The day wore on and Qui-Gon felt Obi-Wan’s patience begin to fray. He was tapping the data pad and fidgeting. Qui-Gon ignored him and continued to count. He knew that Obi-Wan would change his mind about rushing off to see the caves once night fell over the planet. A spectacular sight awaited Obi-Wan once daylight disappeared.

Finally, with the counting and refuelling finished, Qui-Gon made them last meal. He noticed Obi-Wan sitting quietly and deeply in thought. It had been a long day and he felt a bit of Obi-Wan’s impatience had fled. While Obi-Wan cleared the plates, Qui-Gon sat on the couch with a cup of Cha. He silently hoped Obi-Wan had learnt something today. Obi-Wan sat down next to him and he wasn’t disappointed when Obi-Wan spoke.

“Master, I apologize for my disrespectful behaviour today. I do understand the necessity to make sure everything is in order first. If we were on a mission, our first priority is to consider all security issues. I only considered what I wanted.”

“I’m pleased that you came to that conclusion yourself; you have learned a valuable lesson. Always be prepared.” Qui-Gon smiled and stood up. “Now Padawan it’s time to show you something amazing.”

They donned their woolly robes and Qui-Gon led Obi-Wan through the hanger and up some stairs onto the roof.

Obi-Wan shivered, “You were right Master; it’s freezing out here.”

Qui-Gon smirked, “That’s why I’m the Master and you’re the learner.”

Obi-Wan could see one of the larger moons disappearing behind the planet. In a few minutes, it would be very dark. “Why did we come out here?”

“There are a great many spectacular sights in the galaxy, Obi-Wan, and I wanted you to see this one. It’s only visible after dark and only from this vantage point.” Qui-Gon indicated as they walked to the farthest end of the hanger.

Obi-Wan wrapped the fur robe tightly around him and followed his master. Qui-Gon stopped and wrapped his arm around Obi-Wan’s shoulder. “There, Obi-Wan, do you see that mountain peak that looks like the spire on the Jedi temple?”

“Yes, Master I do and look; there are several smaller ones either side of it!” Obi-Wan said wonder filling him.

“Now look directly below the centre one.”

The moon hadn’t quite disappeared yet and he focused his gaze to where his master indicated. “I don’t see anything Master?”

“Have patience young one and you will see.”

Slowly, darkness descended upon them and in that moment a glow appeared at the point, where Qui-Gon had indicated. Pale blue and green lights shone from inside the mountain and as night-time deepened, the blue and green hue rose up through the spire and then into the two smaller peaks illuminating them as well.

“Master, look at that,” Obi-Wans eyes nearly popped out of his head. “What is it; where is it coming from and who is doing it? I thought this planet was uninhabited?”

“It is Padawan; there isn’t anyone here except you and me.”

“It’s beautiful Master, how is it happening?”

“It’s coming from inside the crystal caves my young, impatient learner. I wanted you to see the glorious lights and they are only visible for a few minutes at nightfall. It seems that when darkness falls the energy in the crystals burst forth and lights the caves for a few minutes. Once the energy burst is depleted, they lose their glow.”

“So they don’t glow when we go inside the caves Master?” Obi-Wan asked, sounding disappointed.

“They have a different radiance then, Padawan. The energy we carry within us makes them light up when we pass them. The caves are quite large, and there isn’t a need for artificial lighting.”

“Master, I overheard one padawan telling his friends that there are dangers in the caves.”

“Did he mention what kind of dangers, Padawan?”

“No, he didn’t… Are there dangers in there?”

“Only what you take with you, Padawan.”

“I don’t understand Master?”

“That’s enough talk about the caves, Padawan. I think we should go back inside were its warm. We’ll meditate and get a good night’s sleep for tomorrow will be a big day.”

***

The next day they walked to the caves. Obi-Wan walked along quietly and Qui-Gon wondered what was on his mind. “You’re very quiet young one. I expected a little more enthusiasm from you.”

“I’m excited Master, only… I’m nervous too.”

“What makes you nervous Padawan?”

“Choosing the right crystal for my light sabre, they say that there are thousands of crystals in the caves. How will I know which one is right for me?”

“They say’ Padawan, who are ‘they?” Qui-Gon inquired.

“Master…please, will you tell me anything about the caves?”

“Very well Obi-Wan, yes, there are thousands of crystals. Nevertheless, you will know which one is right for you when the time comes.”

Obi-Wan shook his head, “Master with all due respect, sometimes you can be quite frustrating.”

“I don’t mean to be Padawan, but if I told you everything that I know about the caves, then you wouldn’t learn anything for yourself. This is a time for discovery, a time to let the Force really guide you.”

The entrance looked like a yawning mouth, waiting to swallow them whole. However, as they entered a kaleidoscope of colours lit their way. Obi-Wan felt his heart rate increase as he took in the size of the chamber. Enormous icicles hung down from the cavern roof. A variety of colours danced around the walls as crystals lit them up, causing eerie shifting shadows to form. Each step they took revealed masses of coloured crystals lighting their way like candles. Obi-Wan felt slightly dizzy as he tried to look in all directions at once. They walked farther into the cavern until they came to another tunnel.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it Padawan?” Qui-Gon asked, expressing his feelings of joy.

“I’ve never seen anything so spectacular and there is so much light in here,” Obi-Wan said, smiling broadly.

“The crystals deceive you young one, perhaps you should turn around.”

Obi-Wan glanced at his master, slightly confused and turned back the way they’d come. Surprise filled him.
“It’s so dark; the crystals behind us aren’t glowing anymore.”

“That is true Padawan and it also means that your crystal is not behind you, for if it was it would be still glowing.”

Obi-Wan nodded, “That’s because they are Force sensitive, and the Force will guide me to the one that’s meant for me, right Master?”

“That’s right Padawan.”

“Master what if the Force doesn’t guide me to one?”

“Then it will be because you haven’t found peace over your anger. You must find the strength to release your fear, and you must release all your negative emotions to the Force. Only when you are at peace with your self will the Force guide you to the light.”

“I understand Master, and I do feel much better, although I still feel…”

“Unworthy?”

“Yes Master, I’m sorry.”

“Come Padawan there are more caves to explore.”

They followed a narrow passage until it opened out into a brightly lit cave. This one was smaller than the rest and off to one side it opened out into another tunnel.
Obi-Wan shivered as the beauty of crystals made his skin tingle. Brilliant whites and different shades of blue were clustered together jutting out from the walls. He felt the Force fill him with peace. He noticed what appeared to be a seat, made out of crystal in the centre of the cavern.

“Master is that a seat?”

“Yes it is Padawan, you must go on your own from here and I am going to sit here and wait for you.”

“I’m going on alone! Your not coming with me?” he said, a feeling of anxiety rising in him.

“Obi-Wan, this is your test and you have to discover your weaknesses and banish them. Not only do these caves house your light sabre crystal they also hold the key to your destiny. You must face your fears on your own. I have faith in you and you must trust the Force to show you your way. I will be here when you return.”

Obi-Wan stared at the opening into the darkened tunnel. “I don’t sense anything in there Master, not even the Force!”

Obi-Wan studied his Master for a moment. “When I asked you if there was danger in the caves, you said only what you take with you. Is this the place Master?”

“Yes Padawan, this is the place.”

Obi-Wan nervously walked to the entrance and looked back his master sat down and put his hands in the folds of his robe. Obi-Wan turned back to the entrance taking a calming breath and stepped through. The passage way wove around and then up a few steps and opened into a smaller cave. Crystals lit the way filling the cave with a multitude of colours. A flat rock lay in the centre and Obi-Wan felt compelled to stand on it. As he did a cold feeling of dread consumed him, and he suddenly felt afraid.

He reached out to the Force; he hoped its warmth would comfort him. However, it was allusive and abruptly visions of past torments filled his conscious thoughts.

A menacing figure hovered in front of him. Obi-Wan’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. It was impossible and yet he recognised him. Bruck, his cold features brought back memories of their early rivalry in the temple.

“You’ll never be a Jedi Oafy-Wan you can’t control your anger; you don’t deserve Qui-Gon as your Master.” The sound of his voice seemed to be coming from all corners of the room.

Obi-Wan stumbled back, the image appeared so life like, but Bruck was dead. He felt his fear rise and he imagined Bruck’s stare boring into him. He struggled to breath. No, it can’t be Bruck he’s dead. He closed his eyes, concentrated on his breathing, and tamped his fear down.

When he felt calm, he opened his eyes. “I will be a Jedi and I’ll never turn to the dark side like you,” he whispered, releasing his anxiety. The image faded away, and Obi-Wan felt relief fill him.

He still felt chilled and he glanced around. He thought he heard some one speak his name. “Master is that you?”

Another voice grew louder and Obi-Wan held his breath to hear what it was saying.
A familiar voice and then an image of Cerasi shimmered before him, “You left the Jedi for me. Who will you leave them for next time?”

Obi-Wan wrapped his arms around his chest, and whirled around, pushing the image out of his mind. “No I made a mistake, I won’t leave the Jedi. I won’t be tempted again, Cerasi understands.”

“Are you sure?” his inner voice whispered.

He sighed and released the tension he felt, closing his eyes; he conjured up a smiling image of Cerasi. It made him feel confident and he smiled. “Yes I’m sure.”

Obi-Wan wondered why he was seeing these unnatural visions, could this place be where the dead existed. He shook the thought from his mind.

“You have been tempted though, haven’t you and you can’t be trusted?” Another voice said.

“Who’s there? Master is that you?” Obi-Wan twisted around almost falling over trying to see who was there. However, the cave was empty. Obi-Wan pulled his robe closer, and stared at the shadows.

“Master Qui-Gon, please I know your voice, it 'is you' isn’t it?”

Suddenly an image of Qui-Gon shimmered in front of him. “You’re a failure; you’re angry, and unworthy. You don’t trust your feelings; you don’t trust your master!”

Obi-Wan’s blood ran cold and his body shook, his throat felt constricted. The words were those he’d said himself in his darkest moments. It was an illusion brought on by his fear of trusting his master. His master’s visage appeared very angry and the words spit out were hurtful and cutting. Obi-Wan couldn’t believe Qui-Gon would speak like that and that thought filled him. It wasn’t Qui-Gon; it was his own impression of what he thought Qui-Gon would be like. He closed his eyes and grasped onto Qui-Gon’s teachings. Your focus determines your reality.

“Go away you’re not my master!”

“Qui-Gon will leave you when he sees you for what you really are,” his inner demons repeated.

“No, he won’t leave me, he trust’s me; he said so!” Obi-Wan whispered fretfully.

“Qui-Gon trust’s you, but do you trust him? Can you trust him in all things?” The voice said.

Obi-Wan took a deep breath, he had forgiven Qui-Gon, and he did trust him, but did he trust him enough to open up his heart. Was he afraid to find out? Obi-Wan stared at the illusion of his master and realisation dawned on him. There was danger in this cave, and he’d brought it with him. He brought his own fears and mistrust with him. His master was right; now was the time for discovery. The time had come to banish those negative emotions.

He closed his eyes against the images his senses made up. He pulled the warm glow of the Force to him, gathered his past mistakes, and pushed them into the Force. In turn, the Force surrounded him and bound him with certainty and hope for the future. He pushed his fear away releasing it and he smiled, opening his eyes. The images were gone and his body felt warmer. He felt at peace with his past and the Force grew brighter within him. It was time to tell his Master how he felt.

I'm so glad to see Obi-Wan be strong in the cave.

He's been through so much and while a lot of it was painful, sometimes that is the only way to truly learn.

He felt at peace with his past and the Force grew brighter within him. It was time to tell his Master how he felt.

I agree!!

Great update
