Title: Remembrance
Author: jedidas3
Timeframe/Genre: JA, AU, Drama, some SiriWan
Characters: Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Siri, Adi Gallia, and others
Summary: Obi and Siri have been held prisoner for over a year. When they are finally rescued, it will soon become evident to all that things will never be the same again.
Author’s Notes: I had this plot bunny for a while and finally decided to give in. I hope you all enjoy it.

Part 1

“You can not be serious!” Master Qui-Gon Jinn exclaimed, his deep baritone resonating throughout the Council chambers.

He stood in the middle of the massive room, surrounded by what was known to be the wisest Jedi within the Order. However, at this particular moment in time, Qui-Gon found himself truly doubting that fact as well as questioning the sanity of these distinguished Jedi.

“You can not give up on them,” Qui-Gon continued. “It really hasn’t been that long and…”

“Master Jinn,” Mace Windu forcefully interrupted. “We are not giving up on Padawan Kenobi or Padawan Tachi. We are simply scaling back the search. It has been over a year since their disappearance and we have yet to find even a trace of them.”

“I’m well aware of that, Mace. But even as we speak, Adi is investigating a lead. Don’t you think you should wait until she returns to see if she has discovered anything before you simply wash your hands of the matter?”

Qui-Gon glared at his old friend, silently daring the dark-skinned Councilor to argue with him. He also knew that Mace was not so easily intimidated and would simply wait until the tall Jedi calmed down before he continued.

Closing his eyes, Qui-Gon reached for the comfort of the Force to center himself. He strengthened his determination to make the Council understand the urgency in finding Obi-Wan and Siri.

“Masters, please. I implore you not to do this. Do not abandon them to an unknown fate—a fate that they don’t deserve!”

“Master Jinn, the decision has been made. With the growing unrest throughout the galaxy, the requests for Jedi assistance continue to increase as well. Not to mention the fact that within the last several months, at least twelve Jedi have turned up dead and we have no clue as to what happened.”

Qui-Gon noticed a hint of sadness in his friend’s dark eyes as he spoke of the dead Jedi. He had heard of the Jedi that had been mysteriously returned to their Temple, their bodies broken, their Force signature extinguished. The graying Jedi mourned the loss of their lives, but he had released those feelings to the Force so he could concentrate on finding the two missing Padawans. If he would admit it to himself, Qui-Gon knew that part of him was actually afraid that Obi-Wan and Siri would turn up as one of the perished Jedi.

He stood tall and bowed to the Council. He waited for their dismissal, but instead received their icy stare.

“Another course of action, you are planning, Master Jinn?” Master Yoda inquired.

“Perhaps,” the Jedi Master admitted. “However, I will not bother the Council any longer. I will make finding Obi-Wan and Siri my personal mission. I will not be available to the Council until they are safely back at the Temple.”

“Disrespectful you will not be!” Yoda whacked his gimer stick against his customized chair. “You are not listening! Give up on Obi-Wan and Siri, we will not. A special place they have in my heart. Alive they are so keep searching we will. Do not forget that we also have a responsibility to the Republic. Now, you and Master Gallia will continue to search for your Padawans, but also you have a duty to this Order.”

“My first duty is to the Force and to my Padawan,” Qui-Gon reminded the ancient Master. “I will do what I must and I’m sure that Adi will feel the same way.”

“You have one more month and then the search will be completely abandoned,” Yoda instructed. “If they have not been discovered, then mourn them and move on you will.”

“I will not give up so easily, Master Yoda. You of all people should know that.”

“Know this I do. Listen to the Force. Let it guide you, but I can give you only one more month.”

Once again, Qui-Gon bowed to the Council. He was acknowledged this time by Master Yoda and Master Windu. Turning sharply, in three long strides, he was walking through the large wooden doors. Once the doors closed behind him, the Jedi Master released a pent-up breath as he tried to tamp down his frustration not only with the Council but himself.

There was no doubt in his heart that his Padawan was alive and in trouble. He recalled that when Obi-Wan and Siri had first disappeared that many had speculated that they had simply run away so that they could be together. Neither Qui-Gon nor Adi had believed that and had continued their search despite the rumors.

He began to slowly walk towards the lift, knowing that the Padawan sitting in the reception area was following his every move with anxious eyes. Once he was out of sight of the apprentice, he tiredly leaned against the wall as he waited for the summoned lift car.

Qui-Gon did not want to return to his empty quarters. The Jedi Master did not enjoy staying there without the presence of his beloved Padawan and often sought refuge in other places. He glanced down at his chronometer and knew that Adi should be returning soon. Qui-Gon decided that he would go and wait for her shuttle to arrive and then they would discuss their next move.

The lift finally arrived and he stepped in and punched the button that would take him to the hangar bay. He prayed to the Force that Adi had discovered something that would help them locate the missing teens. They needed a new lead for all the other ones had ended up as false hopes. Qui-Gon and Adi had always continued to press forward even through the disappointments because they believed in the Force and in the strength of their Padawans. He just hoped that was enough.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Siri sat in the corner of the cell, her knees pulled up to her chest, cradled by her shackled hands. She laid her head on top of her knees and stared at the door across the room. She hated waiting. Patience had never been one of her strongest points, but in the past few months, her patience had almost become non-existent.
Her resolve was sorely tested on the days that she had to wait and see if Obi-Wan was alive or if he had succumbed to death as so many others did in this forsaken place. She held her breath when she heard the door unlock. Were they bringing him back or were they coming to tell her that he had died?
She watched carefully as the door opened and Obi-Wan was thrown into the cell. Siri remained seated as the guards picked up his still form and dragged him over next to her. She flinched as Obi-Wan’s arms were roughly placed in the chains. A soft moan escaped his lips, forcing Siri to study his bloodied body.
“He won you another week of life,” the guard sneered as he finished fastening Obi-Wan’s bonds.
“You are a bunch of animals!” the blonde teen snapped. “Look what you’ve done to him!”
“We didn’t do anything to him. His last opponent was a little tougher than the others. Some of those Jedi are actually pretty good fighters when they have to be. But they’re no match for him.”
Siri cautiously watched the guard turn and head towards the door. “The warden will be visiting you two very soon, so see if you can’t get him awake and semi-alert.”
She didn’t see the guard leave, but knew he was gone when she heard the lock click into place. Siri reached out and brushed Obi-Wan’s hair out of his face and tucked it behind his ear. The young girl was amazed at how fast his hair had grown during their captivity. She quickly pulled back her hand as Obi-Wan began to come around. The last thing that Siri wanted to do was to startle him.
The blonde apprentice saw Obi-Wan’s eyes snap open as he quickly sat up and took in his surroundings.
“Ben?” she quietly called out. “Ben, it’s all right. You’re here with me.”
She waited for the realization to come over Obi-Wan as his eyes darted about as a caged animal. After a few seconds, she called out to him again. “Ben? Can you hear me?”
Siri saw the almost imperceptible nod of his head as he scooted back against the wall. She saw him struggle to calm his breathing and his trembling hands. After a few moments, she knew that he was ready to speak.
“How’d I get here? The last thing I remember was talking to the warden.”
“I don’t know,” Siri quietly answered. “Are you all right? You were unconscious this time when they brought you back.”
“I’m fine. What happened?”
Siri fought back the tears that threatened to fall. She knew that he never remembered the fights to the death that he was forced to participate in. He was now a programmed killer and the process that he had been taken through to become one had been heart wrenching. She recalled how soon after their captivity and discovering they were Jedi Padawans, their captors began to formulate a cruel plan. Their intense hatred of the Jedi gave them great pleasure in their torture.
She knew that the only reason that she was not in the same position as Obi-Wan was that he had sacrificed himself for her. He had refused to let them hurt her while he subjected himself to weeks of endless pain and agony. The captors had stripped away his identity and his memory and had replaced it with nothing but a shell that was told what to do and what to think.
Siri couldn’t even call him by his real name because the warden used his name as a trigger as a means of control. She had discovered that calling him ‘Ben’ seemed to calm him and she didn’t have to worry about causing him any pain. But, after all this time, it was still so unnatural to her to call him anything other than Obi-Wan.
The young girl flinched as Obi-Wan reached up to brush away her fallen tears. Siri instantly regretted her actions when she saw the hurt look on his face.
“I would never hurt you,” he whispered.
“I know. I’m sorry. You just startled me.”
Siri knew that Obi-Wan wouldn’t intentionally hurt her, but he was controlled by the warden of this prison that they had been in for over a year. He was programmed to kill Jedi and so far the warden had not told Obi-Wan that she was a Jedi. However, she knew that could change at any moment.
The young girl saw Obi-Wan wince in pain. She scooted closer to him and reached out to take his hand.
“You need to rest, Ben. You’ve had a rough day.”
“So it would seem. I don’t remember doing anything to end up in this shape.”
“Well, maybe you hit your head. You were pretty out of it when you came back.”
“I just wish I could remember what I did. These lapses in memory are becoming rather annoying.”
“Just rest,” Siri whispered as she motioned for him to lay his head on her lap. She once again began brushing his hair with her fingers. Siri smiled at the handsome young man as he gazed into her soft blue eyes.
“I saw one of them today,” he began.
“Who are you talking about?”
“A Jedi.”
“Really?”
Siri silently prayed that Obi-Wan would not remember what happened to the Jedi. She listened intently to her friend as he continued. His words brought a shiver that reached to her very soul.
“Yes. A stinking Jedi. I would have given anything to simply slit his throat. If he’s a prisoner here, he will not last very long. Someone will kill him. I just hope I get the opportunity.”
“Ben….”
“I would kill a Jedi.”
“Why? Jedi Knights are supposed to be the guardians of the Republic. They stand for justice and…”
“Don’t take their side. Not after what they did to us. Not after…”
She started when Obi-Wan sat up and glared at her. Siri could tell by his expression that the images that often plagued his dreams were ravaging his tired mind. These were the times when she was truly frightened of Obi-Wan. It was as if he had no control over what was happening.
“Not after what they did to me,” he finally growled.
“Ben, please. Just calm down,” Siri begged. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. Come on and lay back down, please.”
Siri watched as Obi-Wan’s features relaxed as he laid his head back on her lap. Once again, she fought back the tears. However, the tears weren’t for her, they were for Obi-Wan and for all he had lost. She glanced down and noticed that he had drifted off to sleep. Siri didn’t want to wake him because he rarely slept more than two hours a night. This battle had taken a lot out of him, more than usual, so she was glad that he could rest.
The blonde Padawan leaned her head back against the stone wall. She wondered if her Master was still looking for her. It had been over a year and Siri was beginning to doubt that she and Obi-Wan would ever be found. The teen knew that Adi and Master Jinn would never give up until they were found. The question that had yet to be answered was what would they find?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Qui-Gon paced along the upper observation deck waiting for Adi to disembark from her shuttle. Once he saw her graceful form, he bolted down the stairs and met her at the end of the ramp.

“Adi? Did you find out anything?”

He could tell by the disappointment in her normally strong features that she had not been successful.

“I’m sorry to say that it was just another dead end.”

“That seems to be all that we’re doing is chasing bad leads. Now, the Council wants to scale back the search.”

“I was afraid of that,” the Councilor admitted.

“Well, I do not intend to give up so easily.”

“Nor do I. Let’s go grab a bite to eat and discuss our next move,” Adi suggested.

Qui-Gon nodded and headed towards a speeder.

“Where are you going? I thought we were going to get something to eat.”

“We are. Just not here,” Qui-Gon said. “I need to get away from the Temple for a little while.”

“You want to go into the city?”

“I know the perfect place.”

The large Jedi gestured for Adi to join him as he approached the speeder. Qui-Gon hesitated for a brief second and glanced around the bay.

“On second thought, let’s borrow Mace’s. I’m sure that he won’t mind.”

“Qui-Gon, I’m not sure that it’s a good idea. You know how Mace is about his speeder.”

“He shouldn’t be so worried about material things. That’s not the Jedi way. Perhaps you should remind him of that at the next Council meeting.”

Qui-Gon climbed in and motioned for Adi to do the same. Reluctantly she joined the Jedi Master.

“So where are we going?” Adi finally inquired.

“To the finest eating establishment on Coruscant.”

Qui-Gon smiled as Adi rolled her eyes. He knew that she had realized where they were going—Dex’s Diner. The Jedi Master often sought refuge there when he needed time away from the Temple. He and Obi-Wan had shared many meals there and Dex had all but adopted his Padawan. Maybe there was a slim chance that Dex had heard something from the one of the various clients that graced his restaurant.

He knew that he was probably reaching for the stars, but Qui-Gon had to do something. He could not allow himself to sit and consider the other possibilities that haunted his dreams.

I hope Qui-Gon and Adi find their padawans; however, I also hope someone alerts them not to use Obi-Wan's name. If they're dressed as Jedi that will be bad enough, but if they use his name, things may only get worse. The padawan is committing acts that go against the way he was raised. If/when they find them, hopefully Obi-Wan can be saved/reprogrammed, even if his life is never the same.

Siri is in a tough spot. The warden could turn on her at any moment; I wonder why he hasn't alerted Obi-Wan to her true profession. thinking

Qui-Gon's little speech as to why he was allowed to use Mace's speeder was priceless! I think he's trying to make a point. Mace likes his speeder like Qui-Gon cares for his padawan. Wonder if the Council member will get the message. raised_brow

Hmmm, padawans go missing, Jedi start turning up dead. Meaningful synchronicity? Or just a freaky coincidence? Wonder if anyone might suggest to the Council that solving one mystery might also solve the other.

Poor Obi-Wan, I wonder how he will ever live with this. You Obi-torturer, you! tongue

Oh wow, this looks really neat!

I feel really bad for Obi-Wan and Siri, but mainly Siri. She still knows who she is and can see what is happening to poor Obi-Wan. In a way, their experience is like a really weird dream I had awhile ago. Not totally the same, but they both share the same eerie feeling.

Part 2

Ben opened his eyes and stared into what seemed to be an unending void. The rational part of his mind knew that beyond the four walls of the prison cell there was light, but yet it was so far away. During the day, light would filter through the one small window, providing him and Siri with just enough illumination that they could barely see each other. Now, as the night fell, they were in total darkness.

He tried to sit up so that he wouldn’t wake up Siri. Biting back a moan, the teen sat back against the rock wall. Taking a moment, he studied the only person that he considered to be a friend.

From the day that he woke up in the cell, not knowing who he was, Siri had reached out to him. She had given him a name and a purpose and in turn, he had vowed to do everything in his power to keep her safe.

Despite his promise, there were times that she actually appeared to be afraid of him. He noticed that this was especially true after he had been gone for a while. Ben could never tell here where he had been or what he had done because he honestly couldn’t remember. Sometimes he wondered if she knew the reasons behind his disappearances. Surely she would tell him if she knew anything. Wouldn’t she?

The guards would come for him and take him away and when he returned, he was usually bruised and battered. The only thing that he ever remembered being said to him was that he had done his job well and had kept Siri alive.

He drew back his hand forming a fist when he felt a hand on his shoulder.

“Ben! Don’t! It’s me!”

Ben lowered his hand and unclenched his fist. He shook his head, realizing that Siri had every right to be frightened of him.

“I’m sorry, Siri.”

“It’s all right. It’s my fault,” she admitted. “I should have called out to you before I touched you. I just wanted to make sure that you were still here.”

“I’m here,” He reassured her. “We’re really going to have to complain to maintenance about the lighting in here.”

“I’ll do that first thing in the morning.”

“Good. Perhaps we could also complain about the sleeping accommodations as well. This rock floor leaves a lot to be desired.”

“I’ll add that to the list,” Siri quipped.

Ben could hear the hesitancy in his friend’s voice. He was still embarrassed about the fact that he had almost hit her. Although he knew that she couldn’t see him draw his fist back, she had felt the motion when she had placed her hand on his shoulder.

He was making her nervous, although she was trying to hide the fact through what little humor could be found in their dismal situation. Ben was glad that he couldn’t see her at the moment, for he could not bear to see the fear in her eyes.

“Siri? Can I ask you something?”

“Sure. What is it?”

Ben swallowed hard. “Why are you afraid of me?”

“Afraid of you? I’m not sure what you mean.”

“I can hear it in your voice. Please don’t lie to me.”

“Ben, I…”

“Tell me why,” he demanded through tightly clenched teeth.

His request was met with a strained silence. Ben knew that he was scaring her now.

“Have I ever hurt you before?” he finally asked.

“No,” she whispered. “You’ve never hurt me. It’s just that sometimes it’s like you’re not in control of your anger.”

“So, I do scare you.”

“Sometimes,” Siri answered truthfully. “But it’s not your fault. It’s…”

“It’s their fault. The Jedi made me this way. They did this to me,” he deduced.

“Ben. If anyone is to blame it’s Warden Dernal and this place. If we could just get out of here, everything would be all right. You could get help and…”

“Help? Are you saying that I need help?”

“We’ve just been here for so long,” Siri reasoned. “It will just take us a while to adjust to having a real life once again.”

Ben smiled bitterly, knowing that Siri couldn’t see him. “A real life? And what would that be? What kind of life will you go back to?”

The young man never received an answer as the sound of the door unlocking permeated the tension in the small cell. He and Siri were forced to shield their eyes against the bright lights that the guards carried before them.

“Stand up,” the lead guard ordered. “The both of you!”

Ben stood up on shaky legs. He held out his hand to help Siri off the ground.

“Where are we going?” Siri asked.

“The warden’s office. He decided that he didn’t want to come down here, so you both have been summoned to his office. Now, get a move on!”

Ben eyed the guard’s suspiciously. It was very unusual to be called to the warden’s office at this time of night.

He caught himself as he was shoved forward by one of the other guards. Ben glared at the three burly men, hatred pouring from his eyes.

“You have a problem, boy?” the head guard snarled at the teen.

“No, but if you touch me like that ever again, it will be the last thing you do.”

“You may be the warden’s golden boy, doing his dirty work for him. But you’re nothing to us. You and your girlfriend are just prisoners. You’re scum! Now move!”

Ben felt Siri gently nudge him towards the door. The anger was boiling inside him, threatening to erupt like a volcano. He wanted nothing more than to permanently dispose of the obnoxious henchman. Ben knew that it wouldn’t take much to break the guard’s nose and drive it into his brain or to simply snap his neck in two. He began to tremble as his muscles began to tense. The teen started towards the man who had been antagonizing him.

“Ben, don’t,” Siri pleaded.

He graced her with a slight nod as he obediently followed the head guard down the hall with Siri walking beside him. The other two guards walked behind them, making sure that Ben was fully aware of their presence. He was grateful that it was only a few minutes before they found themselves standing outside the door to the warden’s office. He really didn’t know how much longer he could take the off handed remarks that were being directed towards him and Siri.

The lead guard opened the door and motioned for the two captives to go in. As the door closed behind them, Ben and Siri stood before Warden Dernal, waiting to be acknowledged.

Ben stared at the man sitting in front of him. All he really knew about Warden Dernal was that he was originally from Corellia and he was a difficult man to please.

For some reason that Ben did not understand, Dernal had taken a special interest in him and Siri, keeping them separate from the other prisoners. Ben was brought out of his reverie by the sound of the warden’s harsh voice.

“I have a job for you, Obi-Wan.”

The teen stiffened as his eyes became fixed and glazed over. Haunted images raced through his mind as he tried to focus on Dernal’s scarred face. He suddenly felt weak as he sank to his knees and grabbed his head, wanting to slow down the horrors that were flooding his thoughts. After a few moments, he grabbed the edge of the desk and pulled himself back up.

“Can you hear me, Obi-Wan?”

“Yes,” came the monotone reply.

“You know that we have captured another Jedi,” Dernal informed the teen.

“Yes.”

“He is a very dangerous Jedi and must be disposed of immediately. You are to be ready to face him in half an hour.”

“Please don’t make him do this,” Siri begged. “He’s barely had to time to recuperate from the last one.”

“He can take care of himself. I don’t think you want to interfere, young lady, or he could be taking care of two Jedi.”

Ben glanced at Siri, his expression was puzzled, but he quickly schooled his features as the warden paged the guards to come and get him. He went willingly, ignoring the looks of fear that the guards now wore. All that he could think about was killing the Jedi. They had caused him so much pain and had taken so much away from him, he didn’t feel any remorse for what he was about to do. As far as he was concerned, if he could make the Jedi suffer a fraction of what he had endured at their hands, then that would be justice enough for him.

Siri glared at Warden Dernal as he rose from his desk. She followed him with her piercing gaze as he circled around her.

“Do you know what will happen if he discovers that you’re a Jedi and have been lying to him all this time?” Dernal asked.

“Yes. I don’t want to do anything that will hurt him. I’m all he’s got in this prison.”

“That’s right and I suggest you keep that in mind before you have another outburst like you did just a few moments ago. Do I make myself clear?”

Siri sighed in frustration. “Yes.”

“Good. Now, let’s go.”

“Go? Where?”

The blonde padawan was sure that she was not going to like the answer.

“To watch Obi-Wan fight.”

Her eyes widened in surprise and fear. Siri had never been made to watch Obi-Wan in these fights to the death and she wondered why she was being made to do so now.

“I’d rather not,” she firmly replied.

“You seem to think you have a choice. I think that you need to see what can happen to you when I determine that you no longer have any usefulness to me. Now, let’s go.”

Siri pulled away from Dernal’s grasp. “I can walk on my own.”

She walked down the hall beside the warden, ignoring his attempts at meaningless conversation. If she could find a way to get rid of the Force suppression collar that she had worn since their first day of captivity, then perhaps she could help Obi-Wan. Every time that she tried to remove it, she would find herself on the receiving end of a painful jolt that ravaged her body, usually leaving her unconscious for quite a while. After several times of trying to remove it, she had finally given up.

Siri stopped outside a door that led to a private box over the arena. Stepping aside as Dernal opened the door, she waited for him to motion for her to proceed up the stairs. Sitting down in one of the seats, she leaned forward and searched for Obi-Wan. She couldn’t believe what she was going to be forced to watch—the needless slaying of a Jedi by the one person that she loved more than anyone else in the universe.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Qui-Gon Jinn and Adi Gallia stood in the door way of Dex’s Diner and took in the surroundings of the busy little restaurant. Species from all over the galaxy filled the booths and stools at the bar, leaving the two Jedi searching for a place to sit. The waitresses wheeled back and forth between the customers, one of them finally pointing to an empty table in the far corner of the room.
Nodding his thanks, Qui-Gon motioned for Adi to follow him back to the table. As they sat down, they noticed that many of the patrons were watching them with great caution. Qui-Gon and Adi were well aware that many of the customers were wanted outlaws, but they were not concerned with that. Picking up the menu, he handed one to Adi and then began to study the menu.
“Qui-Gon Jinn!” the unmistakable voice of Dexter Jettster boomed across the room.
The Jedi stood up and embraced the Besalisk, nearly being knocked over by a too firm pat on the back.
“It’s good to see you, old friend. I see that you have brought a friend,” Dexter observed, smiling at the beautiful Councilor.
“Yes, this is Master Adi Gallia. Her Padawan is missing along with Obi-Wan,” Qui-Gon informed his friend.
“My condolences, Master Jedi,” Dexter replied, a look of sadness on his face. “Your apprentice was also quite a beauty. She and Obi-Wan used to come here quite a bit.”
“Thank you,” Adi replied.
Qui-Gon sat back down and scooted over to allow Dexter to squeeze on the seat beside him.
“So, tell me Dex, have you heard anything?”
“Nothing concrete. Just rumors, really. Nothing definite about the kids, but maybe something about the missing Jedi.”
“At this point, I think that we’ll take anything. We’re running out of leads.”
Qui-Gon could sense that Dexter wasn’t looking forward to telling them what he had learned. However, the Jedi Master knew that the tenderhearted cook would eventually tell him all he knew. He waited patiently for Dexter to continue.
“Some smugglers were in here the other day and had just made a delivery to Kessel and were talking about a fight that they saw. It seems that one of the prisons participates in fights to the death as a means of punishment and carrying out sentences. There was a young man that day that had been dubbed ‘the Jedi killer.’ They say this boy couldn’t be over eighteen and yet he’s killed at least ten Jedi.
“They kept talking about how this boy with magical powers fought this Jedi that had been captured. It took him less than half an hour to kill this Jedi. Evidently, the warden has something against the Jedi and he will often use them in the arena instead of the actual prisoners. Since this warden doesn’t like Jedi, maybe he has Obi-Wan and Siri.”
“That’s a strong possibility,” the graying Jedi agreed.
“One more thing,” Dex continued. “The boy that they described, they spoke of his eyes and how they changed like the sea. Do you think that it could be Obi-Wan?”
“No,” Qui-Gon stated with a shake of his head. “This boy they spoke of isn’t Obi-Wan. He could never kill another Jedi. However, I do think that Obi-Wan and Siri may be in this prison. It’s a place to start.”
“I wish I could be of more help,” Dexter sadly stated.
“You’ve helped us more than you could ever know.”
Qui-Gon patted the Besalisk on his back as Dexter pushed himself up.
“Whatever you want is on the house,” the cook said as he meandered back to the kitchen.
Smiling, Qui-Gon acknowledged Dexter with a wave. Putting his menu down, he stared across the table at Adi.
“What are you thinking?” she nervously inquired.
“I’m thinking that we need to get ourselves arrested,” Qui-Gon replied.
“I was afraid that you were going to say that. What if Obi-Wan and Siri aren’t there?”
“But what if they are? It’s the first real lead that we’ve had in the last few months,” he argued.
“You’re right,” Adi relented. “When do you want to leave?”
“Now.” Qui-Gon stood up and began to make his way towards the door with Adi close behind him.
Waving at Dexter, Qui-Gon called out, “We’ll have to take a rain check!”
“Good luck!” Dex said. “If…I mean when you find the kids, tell them they eat free for a year!”
Qui-Gon smiled as he joined Adi at Mace’s speeder.
“Do you plan to tell the Council where you’re going?” the Councilor asked.
“I’ve already informed a Council member of my plan and she approved it.”
Qui-Gon smiled at Adi as he headed back towards the Temple where they could gather what supplies they would need. He knew that this could possibly turn out to be another dead end, but he also knew that he had to at least investigate the possibility that Obi-Wan and Siri were being held on Kessel.
The trip back to the Temple did not take very long for which the two Jedi were glad. As the hangar bay grew closer, Qui-Gon spotted Mace waiting for the return of the two errant Jedi.
“I don’t think you’re going to get away as quickly as you originally planned,” Adi whispered in Qui-Gon’s ear.
“So it would seem.”
Qui-Gon shut down the speeder and climbed out. He waited for Adi to join him and the two slowly made their way towards the senior Council member. Qui-Gon knew that Mace was not happy with them, but at the moment, he had other pressing matters to attend to. His goal was to get away from Mace as quickly as possible, but judging by the expression on the Councilor’s face, that was not going to be as easy as he thought.
