“I’m telling you one thing. You make a deal with Dernal; you’ll live to regret it,” Mangan vowed.

I hope he's not right. worried

As soon as the last knot was loosened, Qui-Gon found himself on the floor with Obi-Wan straddling him and the teen’s hands wrapped securely around his neck. The Jedi Master managed to get his fingers underneath the boy’s and began to pry Obi-Wan’s hands away from his throat. Having no choice, he called upon the Force and pushed the young man off of him.

Yikes, scary to think that one wrong move could end up in yet another of Obi-Wan's cold blooded murders.

“What promise?” she repeated, pressing the pilot to reveal the burden that he carried.

“To my brother.”

confused I wonder what Dernal did to his brother.

“I hate you,” he whispered once again before closing his eyes for the final time. Ben hoped that Qui-Gon Jinn had better sense than to be here when he woke up. But somehow, he figured that the obstinate Jedi wouldn’t be far away.

For your sake Obi-Wan, I hope Qui-Gon won't be.

Wonderful update! applause applause

Valairy_Scot: Oh my poor Obi-Wan. Poor Qui-Gon. So, will the drug wear off or how did he revert back to Ben before? This story just wrenches my heart, my evil friend.

Evil? Who me? laugh I can't reveal too much too soon! wink

Cole_Kenobi: Wow. You're just pulling at the heart-strings with this chapter.

So I've been told! grin

I love the perspective into Cordo's reason for revenge, poor guy, I wonder if what happened to Obi-wan, happened to his brother. Poor guy.

More will be revealed about Cordo, his brother, and what the Warden has to do with it all.

Bastet: So I guess he knows that from personal experience. However, as far as Obi-Wan is concerned, we knows the captain's failed to take into account the caring determination of one very stubborn Jedi master.

It's a good thing that Qui-Gon is so obstinate. That stubbornness will come in handy! wink

Gkilkenny: Qui-Gon is not going to be happy when the Council sides with Adi

No he's not. However, he expects her too. This is a battle that he may have to face alone. worried

Vivid_Scripts: Oh wow, I'm loving this fic. Add me to the PM list, please!

dancing A new reader! Yippee!!! I'll be happy to add you to the list!

I think the only person that can make a legitimate case for Obi-Wan now is Siri. I hope the council would be willing to listen to her.

We'll just have to wait and see.

bek: Just maybe, if Qui-Gon is persistent and consistent in being there for Ben, day in and day out, perhaps the teen will slowly begin to come around. But then again, where would the fun in that be?

Good point. I mean where would the fun be if we didn't have angst and drama? wink

all_othr_nams_tkn: I'd be happy to add you to the list as well. Thanks for asking! hugs

dianethx: blush Thank you so much. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate all you do!

KELIA: It breaks my heart to see him so lost and Qui, so far, not being able to get through to him.

Qui-Gon has his work cut out for him and as far as the Warden is concerned...your right...he can't be trusted.

LilyHobbitJedi: Yikes, scary to think that one wrong move could end up in yet another of Obi-Wan's cold blooded murders.

Your right. Thank goodness Obi doesn't have any use of the Force, or things could have gotten even uglier.

Thanks so much for reading.

Don't worry, I'm working on the next post. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate everyone's support and encouragement. I'll get it posted as soon as I can. Thanks again for being such loyal readers! hugs

Here's the next post as promised. I hope you enjoy it!

Part 18

The two senior Council members sat in Yoda’s private chambers, each considering the news that they had just received from Master Adi Gallia. She had contacted the Temple, requesting a private audience with Yoda and Mace and it had been granted. Adi had informed them that Obi-Wan and Siri had been found and that they had been rescued. They could sense her hesitancy and quickly realized that there was much more to her report that what she had initially told them.

Yoda closed his eyes as he replayed her words in his mind. She had told them that Obi-Wan was the ‘Jedi Killer’ that they had been looking for. Something had happened to the boy while he was imprisoned and Ben, as she had called him, knew nothing of his former life. The boy’s only mission was to extinguish the flame of the Jedi from the universe, a mission which he vowed to carry out.

After Master Gallia had completed her report, he and Mace had retreated to his room. Neither Jedi wanted to believe what they had just heard. Obi-Wan Kenobi was a murderer. Obi-Wan Kenobi took great pleasure in killing Jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi would not rest until all the Jedi were dead.

This could not be the same boy that would often sit where Mace was and listen to Yoda’s stories about his days as a Padawan. This could not be the same boy that would be playing hide and seek with the younglings and the next minute sparring with Master Jinn, looking like the Jedi warriors of ancient history. This could not be the same boy. Yet in the elder Jedi Master’s heart, he knew that it was. This boy, perhaps one of the few that he held a special bond with, was no longer an innocent boy. He was now a young man marred by the evil of others to the point that Obi-Wan Kenobi no longer existed. He was now called Ben.

Yoda’s thoughts turned to Qui-Gon. His former student must be devastated. To have his Padawan become everything that the Order stood against was something that no Jedi Master wanted to face. However, Qui-Gon Jinn now faced that possibility for the second time in his life. After losing Xanatos to the dark side, Obi-Wan had been the one to heal the Jedi Master’s ravaged soul. It had taken some doing on the boy’s part, but years later, the two of them had become more like father and son instead of Master and apprentice.

“What are we going to do?” the Korun Master softly asked, finally severing the silence between them.

“Unclear the path is. Discover the truth we must. We must learn what happened to the boy to turn him against the way of the Jedi.”

“And then what?”

The tiny Jedi sighed. “I do not know. Keep this between us for now, we must.”

“What?” Mace exclaimed. “We at least have to tell the other members of the Council.”

“We will in time,” Yoda assured his friend. “First, we will meet the ship and see the Padawan for ourselves.”

“I don’t believe that he will give us a warm welcome.”

“I need to know for myself if Obi-Wan is truly lost to us.”

Yoda’s eyes were cast to the ground as a sadness came over him. He wanted this to be nothing more than a bad dream, but if what Master Gallia said was true, the Jedi Order would be caught in the throes of a nightmare.

“Meet you I will in the hangar bay. Prepared to face Obi-Wan we must be. Keep in mind that something horrible must have happened to the boy. Judge him we cannot until we know what has happened.”

Yoda and Mace once again sat in silence, each seeking the Force for guidance and strength for what they were about to face. Both of the Masters knew that things were about to drastically change for the Jedi Order and for Obi-Wan Kenobi. The fact remained that the young man had murdered over a dozen Jedi. That would not be easily forgotten or forgiven.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Siri lay awake in the dimly lit room, staring at the ceiling, wondering when her Master would return. Master Gallia had been gone when she had awakened from her nap and had yet to return. She hoped that everything was all right, but somehow doubted the fact. Things hadn’t been all right in a long time. The young girl reached out for her Master through their bond.
//Master?//
//Yes, Padawan?//
The apprentice smiled to herself. She had sorely missed Adi and took a moment to revel in the Master’s presence. Siri warmly accepted the tendrils of support that the Jedi was sending her across their bond.
//Thank you, Master.//
//You are most welcome, my child. Is everything well?//
//I was just wondering where you were.//
She could almost see Adi return her smile. The door to the cabin opened to reveal her Master standing in the door way. Siri stood up and went and embraced the Jedi. The girl knew that such an unexpected public display was out of the ordinary, but at the moment, Siri didn’t care. She wanted the comfort of her Master’s arms and the reassurance that she was actually going home.
“I’m sorry,” the Master apologized. “I intended to be here when you woke up.”
“It’s all right, Master. I shouldn’t act like a youngling, but I guess I just didn’t like the fact that I was alone.”
“You’re not alone, Siri. I am here for you and you are going home,” Adi assured the young girl.
“I know that, but it doesn’t seem real.”
“It is. I promise you my dear Padawan, it’s very real.”
Siri permitted Adi to pull her back into her arms. She leaned her head against the Jedi Master’s shoulder, silently thanking the Force for her Master. After a few moments, Siri pulled away and pushed her hair behind her ears.
“I look horrible,” Siri stated as she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror.
“Actually, you look beautiful. Considering that I never thought that I would see you again, I think you look wonderful.”
Siri blushed at her Master’s praise. “Thank you, Master. I can’t wait to get home and back to our quarters. The first thing that I’m going to do is take a hot shower and put some clean clothes on.”
“I don’t blame you.”
“Master,” Siri began, unsure how to approach the subject. “Have you seen Obi-Wan? How is he?”
“He’s with Master Jinn right now,” the Jedi remarked.
“How is he?” the girl repeated.
“Siri, I think that you need to worry about yourself,” the Jedi declared. “You’ve spent the last year taking care and worrying about Obi-Wan.”
“He would have done the same for me if our situations were reversed. You haven’t answered my question, Master,” the teen persisted.
“He’s very…angry,” Adi finally replied. “I tried to sit with him for Qui-Gon to take a break, but things did not go well.”
“What happened?” Siri reluctantly asked, unsure if she wanted Adi to continue.
“He attacked me and I had to restrain him. Needless to say, neither Qui-Gon nor Obi-Wan were very happy about it.”
“I’m sure you had no choice,” Siri whispered.
“No, I didn’t. Like I said, Qui-Gon is with him now.”
“I wish I could see him and talk to him. He used to listen to me.”
“I doubt he would now; he sees you as one of us.”
“He sees me as a traitor,” Siri corrected. “I feel like one.”
“You are no such thing. You did what you had to do to help him, you must remember that.”
Siri sighed as she shook her head. She realized the fact that her Master was right, she just wished that her heart agreed with her mind.
“What will happen to him?”
“I don’t know. We’ve got to find out what exactly happened to him to see if we can reverse the process.”
“And if you can’t?”
The teen knew by the Master’s silence that Obi-Wan’s future looked bleak. She sat down on the cot and put her head in her hands.
“It could’ve so easily been me. Obi-Wan begged the Warden to leave me alone,” Siri recalled, sorrow apparent in her hushed voice. “He told Warden Dernal that he could do anything he wanted to him, but I wasn’t to be harmed. After that, I didn’t see Obi-Wan for at least a week. Whenever I asked where he was, I was told he was receiving treatments.”
“What kind of treatments?” Adi pressed.
Siri sat up and shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. When he came back, he was exhausted. His head hurt so bad that he could barely stand to move it. He just laid on my lap and slept. When he woke up, he started talking about the Jedi and how much he hated them. I decided that for a while, I had to keep my identity a secret. He cried and told me about how they had murdered his parents and how cruel that they had been to him. I assumed that somehow the Warden had planted these ideas in Obi-Wan’s mind.
“A few days later, Obi-Wan killed his first Jedi. At first, he was doing it partly to protect me. The Warden would tell him that if he lost that he would kill me. Then he actually started to enjoy the killing. He made it his life’s purpose to kill every Jedi that he could.”
“What would happen after the fights?” the Master asked, hoping that she wasn’t demanding too much of Siri.
“He would come back and sleep again for at least a day and then he would go for another treatment. Right after his last fight, he didn’t have much time to recuperate. The Warden went ahead and gave him another treatment. I also think he was planting more doubts in Obi-Wan’s head about my loyalty to him.”
She scooted over as her Master sat down beside her. Siri leaned on Adi’s shoulder as the Jedi put her arm around the apprentice. There was so much more that she had to say, but the young girl was so tired. Truthfully, she simply wanted to forget it ever happened, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t forget the sacrifice that Obi-Wan had made but she knew that act of nobility wouldn’t save the young man.
“We’re almost home,” Adi announced. “We’ll talk more then. Right now, I don’t want you to worry about anything except getting your strength back. We will face the future together.”
Siri nodded and lay back down on the cot. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and anxieties that prevented her from receiving the tranquility that the Force wanted to give her. She was relieved when she felt her Master’s soothing presence reach out to her. She smiled at Adi and sent a wave of gratitude back to the Jedi.
//Thank you, Master.//
//You’re welcome, my Padawan.//
Whatever the future held, Siri knew that she was no longer alone. She had her Master and the Force to guide her through the turbulent times ahead. As she drifted back off to sleep, she said a silent prayer that somehow, she would be able to do the same for Obi-Wan.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cordo Mangan peered through the doorway and studied the man that he despised. He could relate to the boy’s loathing of the Jedi because he felt the same way about Dernal. The Warden did not deserve to live. He was still in his seat but now he was all alone. There were no Jedi around to come to his rescue. All it would take was one shot.

Mangan pulled his blaster from his holster and moved to stand in front of the Warden. He wanted to see the fear in the man’s eyes when he pulled the trigger. By the time Dernal yelled for help, it would be too late. Lifting the blaster, Cordo placed the muzzle of the weapon right between the Warden’s eyes.

“Are you ready to die?” the pilot calmly asked.

“You can’t kill me,” Dernal protested. “The Jedi…”

“The Jedi aren’t here to protect you. It’s just you and me.”

“I’m in their custody. You can’t do this!”

“Really? Where are your Jedi friends? Go ahead and yell for them. You’ll be dead before you utter the first word,” the smuggler vowed.

“You’re bluffing,” the Warden accused.

“Try me. Please.”

Cordo smiled as his finger started to brush the trigger. The pilot could smell the fear as beads of sweat shone on Dernal’s forehead. He had waited a long time for this. Now his brother could rest in peace.

“This is for you Ca’li.”

The pilot never got the chance to fire his weapon before it went sailing through the air into the hands of Qui-Gon Jinn. Cordo’s gaze hardened at the Jedi Master. He was truly beginning to dislike this particular Jedi. Jinn had interfered with justice and that was not acceptable to the smuggler.

“What are you doing?” Cordo exclaimed.

“Saving you from making a mistake,” Qui-Gon answered.

“A mistake? The only mistake is allowing this piece of vermin to live!”

“I will not debate this with you again,” the Jedi warned. “Mr. Dernal is in Jedi custody and will arrive to Coruscant alive.”

Mangan pushed the Jedi away when Qui-Gon moved to assist the Warden out of his seat.

“He’s not going anywhere,” the pilot growled.

“I am moving him to somewhere safe until we get to Coruscant. Now, you can get out of my way voluntarily or we can do this the hard way.”

“Go back and take care of your boy! Cordo is mine!”

“I can’t do that.”

“Are you starting to realize that there’s no hope for your apprentice? You’re too late to help that boy and it’s because of him!”

“There is always hope,” Qui-Gon reminded the pilot.

“No there’s not. Hope doesn’t exist, only justice.”

“That is not for you to decide. If you wish to press charges against the Warden, you will have the opportunity to do so.”

“You’ll think differently after you see that your boy’s life is over. Even if you got him back in his right mind, the realization of what he’s done will eat him up! He’ll die of a broken heart. Do you know how hard that is to watch?” The pilot fought to control his trembling voice. “Have you ever seen someone just will themselves to die? It’s not pretty, Master Jinn.”

“That will not happen to Obi-Wan.”

“You just continue living in your fantasy world, Jinn.”

An alarm notified the pilot that they were preparing to come out of hyperspace. He turned on his heels and headed back towards the cockpit. He cursed Qui-Gon Jinn under his breath, not caring if the Jedi overheard him. Dernal would be dead by now if Jinn hadn’t interfered. Turning on the communication switch, he announced to his passengers that they would be coming out of hyperspace and that they should prepare themselves.

Angrily flipping off the switch, he checked his coordinates and then brought the ship out of hyperspace. Before him was the planet of Coruscant and now, thanks to Jinn, he would have to wait for his chance for revenge.

“Don’t worry, Ca’li,” he muttered to himself. “Our time will come.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ben fought his way back to consciousness. The last thing he remembered was that despicable Jedi pressing something against his neck. Opening his eyes, he glanced about the room and quickly realized that he was alone. He figured that Jinn wasn’t far away, but at least for the moment, Ben didn’t have to see his face.
He started to sit up, but found his arms were once again tied to the frame of the small bed. As Ben pulled against the bindings, he noticed his left hand was bandaged. Evidently Qui-Gon Jinn couldn’t stand the sight of a little blood. He continued to pull against the strips of cloth, trying in vain to free himself.
“Stinking Jedi!” Obi-Wan shouted, hoping that wherever Qui-Gon Jinn was, that he could hear him.
The teen stopped his struggles and stared at the ceiling. As much as he wanted to be rid of every Jedi in the galaxy, he did not want to go to the Temple. He knew that he would be their prisoner and the thought of being held against his will among the Jedi was enough to make him want to vomit. Ben longed to return to Kessel where things had been simpler for him. After he killed twenty Jedi, he would have earned his freedom and then he would have been free to pursue the rest of his enemies until he wiped them from the face of the universe.
He heard the announcement from the ship’s Captain that they were exiting hyperspace. That meant that they were almost to Coruscant. The youth silently swore against Qui-Gon Jinn, pulling against his bonds one more time. Ben felt the slight shudder of the ship that indicated that they had come out of hyperspace.
Ben began to pull against his restraints even harder, ignoring the pain as the sturdy cloth began to cut into his wrists. A little more and he would be free and with any luck he would be able to get off the ship before anyone noticed. Even a ship like this should at least have one escape pod.
With one final pull, he was free. He pushed himself up and in two strides, was palming open the door and stepping outside into the corridor. He looked to his left and then his right to see if the way was clear. Satisfied that he was alone, he headed towards the back of the ship to see if he could find a pod. As he turned down another corridor, he heard voices coming towards him and decided that he needed to find a safe place to hide before he was discovered.
Palming open the nearest door, he stepped inside. When he entered, he couldn’t believe his eyes. There she was, sleeping on the bed. Siri Tachi. The one who had betrayed him. He stood frozen, watching the young girl as she continued to slumber. He could kill her now and no one would be able to stop him.
He walked over to the bed and stood above her. Ben couldn’t deny her beauty, but her loveliness could not save her. Not from him. Now was his chance. What was holding him back? What was he waiting for?
Ben’s placed his hands around the girl’s delicate throat and began to squeeze. He hoped that she would open her eyes so his face would be the last one that she saw before she died. The young man smiled as Siri’s eyes flew open and she began gasping for air.
“Hello, Siri,” he uttered. “I think it’s past time that I repayed your loyalty to me.”
He felt a set of hands on him, pulling him off of Siri. Ben was whirled around and found himself staring into the fiery eyes of Adi Gallia.
“We meet again, Sithwitch,” the boy jeered.
Ben tried to pull away, but the grip of the Jedi was firm. He could almost feel the anger burning inside the evil woman. A defiant grin danced across his features. They were no better than he was. Adi Gallia was proving to him that the Jedi could show emotion. They could hate just as easily as he did. He had known all along that the Jedi were hypocrites and this detestable Jedi was proving his point.
“Be careful. You don’t want to break the Jedi Code,” he mocked, hoping to drive her over the edge. He wanted to see the Jedi lose control.
He was shocked when she wrenched his arms behind him and placed metal binders around his wrist. She then shoved him out the door into the imposing figure of Qui-Gon Jinn. Beside the tall Jedi, stood Warden Dernal, watching the scene unfold before him with great interest.
“Keep him away from me and my apprentice,” Adi warned.
Ben glared at Qui-Gon who remained silent until the Councilor went back into her room. He tried to pull away when the Jedi grabbed him by the elbow and began to escort them back to the passenger area.
“We are ready for final approach,” he informed the boy as the man’s large hands secured him and the Warden in separate seats.
The young man watched Qui-Gon as he sat down in his own seat. Ben knew that this situation was beginning to frustrate the Jedi. He was beginning to wear Qui-Gon Jinn down and knew that it wouldn’t be long before he would make a costly mistake. Ben just had to bide his time and that was something that he was becoming very good at.
Obi-Wan is certainly making it hard for him self, especially in front of Siri's master and councillor to boot.
Qui-Gon is living in dream land if he thinks Obi-Wan will be alright
He has killed a dozen Jedi for force sake, he won't be able to live with him self.
So Sad, but such a brilliant chapter. applause
Though I have to worry about his future since he will have to face what he's done and if he's back to himself... cry cry cry
I loved Siri's talk with Adi
Part 17 ( blush )
I wonder what Cordo's deal with the Warden is? Maybe Cordo is really on the Warden's side, and they're just biding their time, and everything that Cordo's mentioned is just a part of it. thinking Or he could really only be seeking revenge.
What horrible lies must have been fed to Obi-Wan that he would loathe Jedi with such a passion! shock
Part 18
This could not be the same boy that would often sit where Mace was and listen to Yoda’s stories about his days as a Padawan. This could not be the same boy that would be playing hide and seek with the younglings and the next minute sparring with Master Jinn, looking like the Jedi warriors of ancient history. This could not be the same boy.
sad Oy, that's kinda heart wrenching.
The Warden did not deserve to live. He was still in his seat but now he was all alone. There were no Jedi around to come to his rescue. All it would take was one shot.
shock shock Um, uh, Jedi! Uh, report to pit immediately! Oh dear me. ((bites nails))
The pilot never got the chance to fire his weapon before it went sailing through the air into the hands of Qui-Gon Jinn.
Okay, that's good. grin As much as I would like to see the Warden meet his end, I think he should stay alive for now. Qui-Gon does too. tongue
After he killed twenty Jedi, he would have earned his freedom and then he would have been free to pursue the rest of his enemies until he wiped them from the face of the universe.
Actually, that would have been rather interesting. A rogue Jedi on the loose... Hmmm... thinking
Oh, I'm so into this story... Maybe reading these multiple updates at a time is a good thing. tongue
Gkilkenny: Obi-Wan is certainly making it hard for him self, especially in front of Siri's master and councillor to boot.
Yes, he is! worried
Qui-Gon is living in dream land if he thinks Obi-Wan will be alright
He has killed a dozen Jedi for force sake, he won't be able to live with him self.
You have a very valid point...
Thank you so much for reading and your encouraging reviews! hugs
LilyHobbitJedi: I love Qui-Gon's unfailing optimism.
He's going to need that unfailing optimism to get through this!
I get the feeling that deep down he really loves Siri, and that's why he hesitated.
Could be...although at the moment, his hate for her is stronger.
Thanks for reading! hugs
bek: There is hope, however small.
There is hope...now is there any hope for a new post on "Not Myself"? (hint) wink
Now Adi has one more thing to use against Obi-Wan/Ben. Not Good!
Not good at all!
Thank you so much for reading!
Bastet: Things definitely don't look good for Obi-Wan righ now, do they?!
Nope! grin
Vivid_Scripts: OMG, i was really panicked when Obi-Wan started strangling Siri!
Sorry to worry you! wink
KELIA: I hope the Jedi will be able to find their own way to reach Obi-Wan.
They're going to have to do something.
Though I have to worry about his future since he will have to face what he's done and if he's back to himself...
That's going to be a big issue for all involved.
Thank you so much for reading! happy
callista_gseran: I think everyone wants the old Obi back...especially Qui-Gon!
silversock: I wonder what Cordo's deal with the Warden is? Maybe Cordo is really on the Warden's side, and they're just biding their time, and everything that Cordo's mentioned is just a part of it. Or he could really only be seeking revenge.
Revenge, pure and simple! devil
Oh, I'm so into this story... Maybe reading these multiple updates at a time is a good thing.
I'm so glad that you're enjoying it! hugs
Okay...so I was hoping the next post would be ready, but it's been a rather busy week. DRL! The next post is being proofed, so you probably won't get it until Monday. I'll try and do better next week! Of course, if these plot bunnies I've got don't leave me alone... silly Thanks for all your support and encouragement. It means so much!
Okay, so....I missed a few updates. blush Don't worry, I certainly didn't loose interest, DRL simply kept me from being able to read all the new posts.
This story is amazing. In a heart-wrenching kind of way. applause
Ack! I can't believe I've missed so many posts! doh!
It really seems that there isn't much hope for Obi. He seems to be pretty far gone- strangling Siri does not look good. And if they can get him back, who's to say that he will be able to live with what he's done? worried I can only hope that they can figure out how to reverse the process and can help Obi to deal with what he has done. praying
Phenomenal job! applause
PM list please?
