Oh, dear, she called him "Obi-Wan."

Gut-wrenching, Jedidas, gut-wrenching. I hope Yoda is right - that if Qui calms himself he can help Obi.

The healer seems to be getting more out of Obi-Wan than Qui-Gon has thus far. Interesting.

Perhaps the healer will stay with Obi-Wan while Qui-Gon meditates. happy

raised_brow Such an exciting chapter, and now Bant and Garen are in the mix. whistling
I do not think saying his name will have much effect. He has been
terrible when they called him ben, how much worse can he be with a force collar and a strong healer holding him.
Anyway I hope he doesn't hurt anyone especially him self.

Brilliant chapter. applause

WOW

I can only hope Obi-Wan's friends can get through to him, though I must say, I admire Healer Alano's tactics.

I doubt the relationship between Qui and Obi can ever be the same again but that doesn't mean it can't be repaired.

Great update

Part 22

Cordo Mangan entered his tiny apartment, glad to be rid of his Jedi passengers. He was still angry at the fact that he had been unable to exact his revenge on Warden Dernal. He wanted that man to suffer horribly for what he had done to his brother. The pilot had looked forward to inflicting excruciating pain on the Warden, knowing that Dernal’s agony would be nothing compared to Ca’li’s.

Months of planning and waiting for the perfect opportunity was ruined by those sanctimonious Jedi, especially Qui-Gon Jinn. Cordo knew it wouldn’t take long for the Jedi Master to figure out that it was too late for his boy. He had tried to tell Jinn, but he wouldn’t listen.

Cordo could easily recall thinking like Jinn. He had believed that he could save Ca’li just as the Jedi believed he could save his apprentice. The smuggler had stood beside his brother as Ca’li fought to regain his memory and his life. In the end, Ca’li could not cope with the fact that he had needlessly taken innocent lives. As a Jedi, Ca’li cherished life and knowing that he had become everything that the Jedi stood against was too much for him bear. One day, Cordo found his brother, dead by his own hand.

It was then that the pilot vowed to destroy Warden Dernal. Revenge became his life’s purpose. He had come so close to fulfilling his promise and now his prey was in the Jedi’s custody. Cordo was determined to find a way to get to the Warden. Perhaps the Jedi would realize that Dernal was nothing but a liar and a murderer in his own right. Even if they did figure this out, they would proceed with the steps of justice and ensure the man a trial. That would be a waste of time because Cordo had already found him guilty and had pronounced a death sentence.

Cordo poured himself a drink and sat down at the small kitchen table, his thoughts turning to the boy, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The teen had no idea what his future held. Right now, the youth could not see past the hate that blinded him. The time would come when that hatred would not longer be directed towards others, but himself. That was when the apprentice would need the most help, when he realized that he was permanently tainted by the blood of the Jedi he had shed. The pilot remembered how Ca’li was when he realized that he had killed those men in the prison and they had just been common criminals. Kenobi had killed over a dozen Jedi, his own kind. There was no way the boy could put that behind him. It would destroy him.

“And you’re just going to stand by and do nothing,” he muttered to himself.

The Captain threw his glass up against the wall, splintering it into tiny pieces. It was his problem. Let the Jedi deal with the boy. He had other things to worry about, like how he was going to get to the Warden.

Pushing himself up from the table, a thought occurred to him. Maybe if he offered the Jedi his help, he could get close enough to Dernal to kill him. Generally, the Jedi Temple was closed to outsiders, but if it meant helping the boy, perhaps they would welcome him with open arms. Adi Gallia had asked for his help and he had declined. Now it may be the only way that he could honor his promise to his brother.

Going over to his comm unit, he placed a call to the Jedi Temple and left a message that he needed to speak with Master Gallia. Judging by the voice that answered, he figured that he was probably talking to one of those Padawans. The young girl he spoke with promised to deliver the message and now all he could do was wait.

“Ca’li, I will not let you down again,” he whispered. “As soon as I get my hands on Dernal, I’ll make sure that he pays for what he did to you.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Qui-Gon knew that Master Yoda was still beside him, patiently waiting for him to say something. The Jedi Master did not feel like talking and even if he did, he wouldn’t know where to begin. Ever since he had found Obi-Wan, he had hoped that he would just wake up and discover that he was just having a nightmare. But it wasn’t a dream; it was real. Obi-Wan had no true memories of his life as a Jedi and it had become his purpose in life to kill every Jedi who crossed his path. Where had he gone wrong?
“So sure you are, that your fault it is?” Yoda finally asked.
“Of course it’s my fault,” Qui-Gon snapped. “I’m his Master. I am responsible for him and for what happens to him.”
“Feel as if your training has failed him, you do. Do you believe that he could have resisted whatever was done to him?”
“I would like to think so. He survived a mind wipe at the age of 13. I guess I just assumed that he would be able to withstand anything.”
“Forgotten you have that the boy is human,” the tiny Master proclaimed. “Delicate the mind is. We do not know what was done to him.”
“That’s what I was going to find out before I was detained.”
“Too angry you are to face Dernal.”
“Angry?” Qui-Gon glared at the ancient Jedi. “You’re right and I think that I have every right to be. My apprentice was held against his will for over a year and during this time he was turned into a cold blooded killer. Now, he has nothing on his mind but to destroy every Jedi in the galaxy. I’m sitting here wondering why it happened and more importantly if I’ll ever get my Padawan back.”
“Release your anger you must,” Yoda softly urged.
“And then what?” the Jedi Master challenged.
“And then you seek the Force for guidance.”
“So far, the Force hasn’t been very forthcoming with any kind of help.”
“Listening you are not! Closed your mind is. It is clouded by anger just as Obi-Wan’s mind is. Anger controls the boy. It can not have power over you! No help you will be to him if you allow your feelings to control you.”
Qui-Gon knew that the elder Jedi was right. He was allowing his emotions to get in the way of his judgment and he could not afford to do that. In dealing with Obi-Wan, he would need a clear mind so the Force could guide him, but the guilt still consumed him. He felt Yoda’s small hand on his shoulder.
“Release them you must,” Yoda advised.
Qui-Gon Jinn nodded as he gathered the Force around him. He could feel the anger and the resentment slowly ebbing from his tired body into the comforting tendrils of the Force. He could imagine the Force simply taking his negative emotions and crushing them beneath it waves of peace and tranquility.
The Jedi had sat there for close to an hour, renewing his spirit and his mind as the Force embraced him, caressing his wounded mind and heart. Finally opening his eyes, he glanced around and noticed that he was now alone. He vaguely remembered Yoda leaving, but he had not let that interrupt his meditations. Feeling more refreshed than he had in days, Qui-Gon pushed himself up off the ground and decided that before he went to see Dernal, he would go and check on Obi-Wan and Healer Alano.
As he rounded the corner to the lift, he met Bant Eerin and Garen Muln sprinting towards him. The panic stricken look on their faces told him that something was wrong. Dreadfully wrong.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Go find Master Jinn!” Healer Alano shouted at the two Padawans. He didn’t bother watching them as they quickly retreated out the door; his attention was focused on the young man now writhing on the ground. Silently cursing the turn of events, he knelt down beside Obi-Wan and called out to him.

“Ben?”

With a strength that the healer wouldn’t have thought possible, the youth shoved the man away from him, and scrambled to the nearest corner. Alano watched as the teen’s trembling hand grabbed his head. He tried to listen as the teen began mumbling to himself. He could only make out a few words, but it was evident that the teen was angry. He called out to the youth again, hoping that Obi-Wan would at least make eye contact with him.

“Ben? Can you hear me?”

“Leave me alone,” the teen growled.

“What’s wrong?” the healer pressed. “Can you tell me what’s wrong?”

Alano received his answer as he was forced to take cover as the young man hurled a vase in his direction. Quickly getting to his feet, the healer cautiously made his way over to the boy. Obi-Wan was now frantically clawing at the collars around his neck, his fingernails digging into tender flesh causing rivulets of blood to drip onto his clothes. Alano knew he had to stop the teen before he seriously injured himself.

“Ben, tell me what’s happening. Are you in pain?”

He took another tentative step towards Obi-Wan, who continued to struggle with the collars. The youth appeared not to be paying attention to him, so he took another step and then another. He grabbed the teen’s hands and wrestled them away from his neck.

“Ben! Listen to me!” Alano demanded. “I can’t help you unless you tell me what’s going on.”

“Don’t want…your help!” Obi-Wan panted.

“You need my help. Tell me what’s wrong?”

“On fire. I’m… on fire,” the youth stammered. “Burning from the inside...”

Again taking the healer by surprise, Obi-Wan managed to pull free of Alano’s grasp. The Jedi managed to catch the boy as he fell to his knees, his hands once again around his throat. Alano’s first instinct was to implement a sleep suggestion, but there was something blocking him. At the moment, he didn’t have time to figure out what it could be. He knew that he would probably have to resort to a sedative, despite the young man’s protests. As a healer, Alano could not allow the young man to further injure himself.

He wrapped his arms around the wiry frame of the boy and held him tightly, pinning the boy’s hands to his side. Alano tried to murmur soothing words in order to calm Obi-Wan, but the teen was not listening. As the healer felt the young man’s abdominal muscles constrict, he realized that Obi-Wan was about to be sick. Alano helped Obi-Wan lean over as the young man emptied the contents of his stomach.

Alano hoped that Bant and Garen found Qui-Gon and that the Jedi Master would hurry up. He needed to do something for Obi-Wan, but he couldn’t release the young man for fear that he would hurt himself again. The healer winced as Obi-Wan screamed. Profanities etched in sheer agony spewed from the boy’s lips.

A thought occurred to the healer as he began to wonder what would happen if he removed the Force suppression collar. He would be taking a tremendous risk, but if it could alleviate some of the young man’s pain, it might be worth it. He didn’t have to be a Jedi healer to know that Obi-Wan was in severe distress. The shrill cries of anguish tore at Alano’s heart. He had made his decision. Now if Qui-Gon would hurry up, he could put his plan into action.

He tightened his hold on the apprentice. “I know it hurts, Ben. Bear with me a few more minutes and I’ll do what I can to make it better. I promise.”

“Liar…all Jedi are liars,” the youth spat, his voice now hoarse from the abuse it had taken.

“No, Ben. You’re wrong.”

Alano heard the whoosh of the door as it opened. Looking over his shoulder, he was relieved to see Qui-Gon Jinn rush into the room. “Grab my bag!” the healer ordered. He was thankful that the Jedi Master didn’t question his instructions as he watched Qui-Gon hurry to the bedroom and quickly return with his bag.

“Get the sedative ready. I’m releasing the suppression collar,” the healer announced.

“You can’t do that!”

The healer frowned at the Jedi Master. Now was not the time to question his medical expertise. “Stay ready with the hypo spray,” he repeated.

Ignoring Master Jinn’s protest, Alano took his hand and removed the collar. He didn’t regret his decision once he saw the relief spread across Obi-Wan’s distinguished features. It was as if a dying man had been given a second chance at life. The moment of peace was short lived as the teen shoved Alano to the ground. The healer could tell he was still weak, but the fire that Obi-Wan had talked about was now burning in his piercing gaze as he looked between Alano and Qui-Gon.

“Back off,” Obi-Wan scowled.

“Ben, you need to calm down,” Qui-Gon gently encouraged.

“You don’t tell me what to do.”

“Ben, I think that you need to let us take a look at your wounds,” the Jedi Master continued.

Alano noticed that Qui-Gon was trying to keep Obi-Wan’s attention, giving him the opportunity to try and move behind the boy. He could feel the darkness surrounding the young man as Obi-Wan drew upon its strength, urging him to confront the two Jedi. Most of Obi-Wan’s anger was being directed at Qui-Gon, and the healer was glad that the Jedi Master seemed to be able to handle the Padawan’s wrath.

“You’re not getting your hands on me again!” the teen spat.

The healer gave a curt nod to Qui-Gon and calling upon the Force, the Jedi Master Force pushed Obi-Wan back into Alano’s arms.

“Son of a Sith!” Obi-Wan roared, his face contorted in a mask of frustration and rage.

Alano placed the collar back on Obi-Wan, ignoring the insults and barbs that the boy continually threw at him. He gestured for Qui-Gon to hand him the sedative and he injected it in the boy’s arm.

“This one won’t knock him out completely, but he’ll be a little bit more compliant,” Alano informed Qui-Gon.

“What happened?” the Jedi Master demanded to know.

“He had some unexpected visitors.”

“Bant and Garen?”

“They called him by the wrong name.”

“How did they know he was back?”

The healer shrugged. “I don’t know. You know the Temple rumor mill.”

“If they know that he’s back, then others do as well,” Qui-Gon said.

“Probably so.” Alano gathered Obi-Wan in his arms. “Help me get him to his room. I’m going to clean and dress his wounds.”

He noticed Qui-Gon’s questioning look when he had referred to Obi-Wan’s newly inflicted wounds. “He did that to himself?” the Jedi Master asked.

Alano nodded. “That’s when it occurred to me to take the collar off. He needed some kind of inner release.”

“It seemed to work.”

“Yes, but it probably wasn’t the best idea I’ve ever had. Could you feel the darkness?”

“All too well.”

The healer lay Obi-Wan down on his bed and began to clean the scratches on the young man’s neck. Leaning over the teen, he heard the boy mumble something unintelligible.

“What did you say?” he asked the youth.

“I told you that you Jedi were liars,” Obi-Wan whispered.

Alano looked up at Qui-Gon, who shook his head. The healer returned to his task and soon had placed bandages on Obi-Wan’s wounds. “Rest, Ben. I’ll be right outside with your Master.”

“Don’t come back,” the teen muttered.

The healer followed Qui-Gon out into the living room, sensing the Master’s worry, Alano reassured him, “He’s not going anywhere. He might be awake, but he’s too out of it to do anything else.”

Leaning against the wall, Alano sighed, seeking the warmth of the Force. “Did you find out anything useful?”

“Siri was very helpful, but as far as what was actually done to Ob..Ben, no I haven’t found that out yet. I was on my way to see Dernal when I was intercepted.”

Alano smiled. “Master Yoda?”

“Who else?”

“I need to know what exactly was done before I can even begin to think about helping him regain his memory. If I did or said the wrong thing, he could be lost to us forever.”

“If you think that you have a handle on him, I’ll go and see the Warden now,” Qui-Gon proposed.

“We’ll be fine,” he assured the Jedi Master. “I suggest that you might find the two young Padawans that came to see Ben and explain what happened.”

“You may be right. If you need me, I’ll have my comm unit.”

Alano watched the Jedi Master leave, hoping that Qui-Gon would bring back something that would help Obi-Wan. It worried that healer that others were probably aware of the fact that Obi-Wan was back at the Temple. He wondered how long it would be before they discovered that the boy lying in the next room had brutally murdered some of their own.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bant and Garen sat in the dining hall, neither one of them interested in eating. They had discovered through the Temple grapevine that Obi-Wan and Siri were back after being gone for over a year. They knew that Siri was in sickbay, so they had decided to go and visit Obi-Wan, since he was supposed to be resting in his quarters. Bant had rung the door chime, but there wasn’t an immediate answer, so Garen entered the override code that Obi-Wan had given them at one time.
When they entered the room, they saw Healer Alano with Obi-Wan. They had started towards them and then chaos ensued. Obi-Wan grabbed his head and began cursing. He tried to crawl over to Bant and Garen, screaming at them and calling them horrible names. Neither Bant nor Garen could move. It wasn’t until they heard the healer telling them to find Master Jinn did they dash out of the apartment.
The pair had ignored the stares of those that they met in the hallways as they searched for the Jedi Master. Bant had remembered that Obi-Wan had told her long ago that the Room of a Thousand Fountains was one of Qui-Gon’s favorite places. She had never been so glad to see the Jedi Master in all her life.
After they told him that Master Alano needed help, he ran towards the lift, leaving the two of them alone.
“You know, it would have been much simpler to try the comm unit,” Garen said, trying to catch his breath.
“You’re probably right,” Bant agreed, staring after the fleeing Jedi. “I just wasn’t thinking.”
Now here they were in the dining room, wondering what was happening to their friend.
“What do you think is wrong with him?” Bant finally asked.
“I don’t know,” Garen answered. “Maybe something happened in that prison.”
“I guess so,” Bant agreed. “But what?”
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”
Bant and Garen jumped at the deep baritone that had interrupted their conversation. They stood to their feet and respectfully bowed to Master Jinn.
“Please sit down,” Qui-Gon insisted.
“Master Jinn, what’s wrong with Obi-Wan?” Bant anxiously inquired.
“We’re not sure yet. Something was done to him and right now, he um…he’s not himself,” the Jedi Master explained. “We’re trying to find out what happened so we can make him better. But right now, I would appreciate it if you both would just keep your distance.”
“But we’re his friends.”
“I’m well aware of that, young Bant. There will come a time when he needs his friends. But right now is not a good time.”
“Yes, Master Jinn,” Bant and Garen replied in unison.
“Another thing, please do not go and tell anyone what you’ve seen. The fewer people that know the better.”
“What about our Masters?”
“I can not tell you to keep this from your Masters, but for Obi-Wan’s sake, do not tell anyone else.”
Bant and Garen nodded as Master Jinn rose from his seat and left them alone. The two friends sat in silence, their heart aching for Obi-Wan. Bant stood up and grabbed Garen by the hand.
“Where are we going?” he inquired.
“Let’s go see Siri. Maybe we can figure out a way to help Obi-Wan.”
“But you heard Master Jinn,” Garen tried to reason.
“I know, but I want to know what happened to him. Master Jinn said a time would come when Obi needed his friends, I want to know what to expect.”
Bant and Garen headed towards the healer’s wing, hoping that they would be able to see Siri. There was something that Master Jinn wasn’t telling them and if they were going to be there for Obi-Wan, they needed to know what had happened. They hoped that they were ready to hear the truth and that Siri would be forthcoming with the information that they wanted to know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Qui-Gon Jinn entered the cell that was holding Warden Dernal. Before him was the man that held all the answers and the Jedi Master was determined that he would not leave until he got those answers. He took a step towards the Warden using his stature to silently communicate to the Warden that he was not wasting his time playing games. Crossing his arms, Qui-Gon glowered at the man.

“Warden Dernal, I believe that you have some information that I need.”

You sure know how to set up heart-wrenching and HORRIBLE scenarios. I can believe the brother's actions, and it is going to be a tough recovery - if there is one - for Obi-Wan. I just hope everyone, Obi, Qui and the ret of the Jedi realize that Obi-Wan was forced to become something he was not, and thus, cannot be blamed for it.

Why does it not surprise me that his friends are right there to help?
