RE: Remembrance (JA: Obi, Qui, Siri, AU) Updated 5/27!
Cordo poured himself a drink and sat down at the small kitchen table, his thoughts turning to the boy, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The teen had no idea what his future held. Right now, the youth could not see past the hate that blinded him. The time would come when that hatred would not longer be directed towards others, but himself. That was when the apprentice would need the most help, when he realized that he was permanently tainted by the blood of the Jedi he had shed. The pilot remembered how Ca’li was when he realized that he had killed those men in the prison and they had just been common criminals. Kenobi had killed over a dozen Jedi, his own kind. There was no way the boy could put that behind him. It would destroy him.
How truly terrible for Cordo to have experienced seeing his brother take his own life. And how much worse to know that Obi-Wan would likely suffer the same fate.
Great job. Loved it.

Great update! You write psychopaths very well!
I sure hope they find a way to help Ob-- uhh...Ben soon! Qui-Gon will never be the same if he can't help his Padawan!
I've been following this story for a while and then I *lost* it! If you're PM'ing, I'd love one please.

Oh dear.
At least Obi-Wan didn't hurt Bant or Garen, but I'm worried about what did happen to him, it didn't sound good.
At least Healer Alano was able to help him.
Poor Bant and Garen, they're going to be devastated when they learn what happened to Obi!
I hope Captain Mangan gets his revenge on the warden, after Qui-Gon learns what he needs to know, of course.
That is, if the warden tells him anything at all in the first place.
Great update, as usual!
I really can't wait to read more!

I love it when Bant and Garen interfere. They do like getting
into trouble don't they
You have excelled. This chapter was rivetting.
I am so glad Cordo is having a change of heart
I prefer to have him close to Darnel and then he can do me a favour
and punish Darnel for hurting Obi
and Cordo might just help Obi
when he couldn't help his brother... and was his brother a Jedi?
It sure sounds like he was.

I'm wondering when the shift from hate for others to hate of self will occur in Obi-Wan...If the case of Cordo's brother is a sample of what might happen to Obi-Wan, I think Siri will have to remind him of how he saved her from this fate. That
should
help him overcome his guilt. I hope.
great chapter XD

I have a feeling Cordo won't find the Jedi as easy to manipulate as he's hoping. Not that Dernal doesn't deserve what Cordo whats to do to him.
I was glad to see Qui-Gon take Yoda's advice. He wouldn't have been much help to Obi-Wan if he hadn't gotten his own emotions under control.
And poor Obi!
Great update

RE: Remembrance (JA: Obi, Qui, Siri, AU) Updated 5/27!
Sorry I'm so late getting to this wonderful story, evil DRL! But on the plus side I had a two great entries to read.
“It’s not your fault,” he assured the girl. “I probably would have done the same thing.”
“No,” Siri disagreed. “You wouldn’t have been scared.”
Poor Siri, I feel so bad for her going through what she did.
“Ca’li, I will not let you down again,” he whispered. “As soon as I get my hands on Dernal, I’ll make sure that he pays for what he did to you.”
This has me a bit concerned, I wonder what he's going to do.
They hoped that they were ready to hear the truth and that Siri would be forthcoming with the information that they wanted to know.
Once more I have to say poor Siri, being questioned and pestered about everything when she's just trying to recover.
“Warden Dernal, I believe that you have some information that I need.”
For Obi-Wan's sake, I hope the Warden will be cooperative.
Great updates!

I hope Siri doesn't give Bant and Garen too much information. It's already rumored that she and Obi-Wan are back in Temple; the fact of what Obi-Wan/Ben has become is not something that should be circulated at this time. Hopefully the Jedi will come to understand, with time, that Obi-Wan was not himself when he committed those murders. He was in fact what the warden made him.
I'm worried about what the Captain thought concerning his brother, who was a Jedi. Obi-Wan best be as strong as Qui-Gon believes him to be or they may have another who cannot bear to live with blood on his hands.
Wonderful job! But of course, every post is an absolute delight to read! [face_appause] Can't wait for more!

You sure know how to set up heart-wrenching and HORRIBLE scenarios. I can believe the brother's actions, and it is going to be a tough recovery - if there is one - for Obi-Wan. I just hope everyone, Obi, Qui and the ret of the Jedi realize that Obi-Wan was forced to become something he was not, and thus, cannot be blamed for it.
It's going to be very difficult for Obi to accept what he's done and it's going to be difficult for the others in the Temple to accept him as well.
Why does it not surprise me that his friends are right there to help?
That's what friends are for!
Thank you as always

Happy Monday Morning! Here's the next post. I hope you all enjoy it! As always, thank you all for reading; I truly appreciate it!
Part 23
Qui-Gon Jinn was not a man who was easily frustrated, but the smug expression on Warden Dernal’s face would irritate even Master Yoda’s usually serene countenance. He wanted answers and judging by the Warden’s indignant glare, those answers would not come easy.
“What could we possibly have to talk about, Master Jedi?” the Warden inquired, his words dripping with venom.
The Jedi crossed his arms, his own piercing gaze challenging Dernal’s icy stare. “I’ve come to discuss my Padawan.”
“Your Padawan? I’m afraid that I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Obi-Wan Kenobi,” the Jedi tersely replied.
“The boy that was on the ship?”
“I don’t have time for your games, Warden Dernal. I need answers and I need them now!”
Qui-Gon saw the Warden briefly recoil at the Jedi’s stern tone, but he seemed to recover just as quickly. The Jedi took another step towards Dernal. With a barely perceptible wave of his hand, Qui-Gon proclaimed, “You will tell me what I need to know.”
“Nice try, Jedi,” Dernal smirked. “I’m not some weak-minded fool that you can easily manipulate.”
Qui-Gon struggled to tamp down his anger. He was desperate and the Warden was well aware of that fact and was using the Jedi’s desperation against him. He could not afford to lose his temper with Dernal; that would not help Obi-Wan.
“Evidently I underestimated you,” Qui-Gon coolly observed. “I won’t make the same mistake twice.”
“That would be wise.”
“I know that you are responsible for what happened to Obi-Wan. I want to know what you did.”
“I don’t know what…”
“Don’t!” the Jedi warned. “Don’t tell me you don’t know what I’m talking about. What have you done to him?”
“Master Jinn,” Dernal began, “I do appreciate your help with Captain Mangan and I do wish I could return the favor, but I can not.”
“Can’t or won’t?”
“Master Jinn, what do you take me for?”
Qui-Gon leaned over the Warden, forcing Dernal to scoot backwards across his bunk until his back was pressed against the wall. The Master knew that many people were often intimidated by his large stature and he hoped that this cowering man would be no different. It was a tactic that he didn’t use often, but time for diplomacy was fast approaching an end.
“I take you for a man who would ruin a young man’s life just to satisfy your own sick ideas. I take you for someone whose love for money motivates him to hurt others just to make a few credits. I take you for a liar and a murderer.” Qui-Gon stood up. “Does that answer your question?”
“Yes it does. However, Master Jinn, you are mistaken. By the time that boy got to my prison, he was already like that. He…”
“Warden Dernal, I’ve already spoken to Padawan Tachi and she tells me a very different story. Now, I would advise you to change your version as well. I’m very tired of listening to your lies. However, if you’re absolutely certain that you can’t be more of any further assistance; there would be no reason for you to remain in Jedi custody.”
“I could return to Kessel?”
“Of course, I’m sure that Captain Mangan would be more than happy to fly you back.”
Qui-Gon smiled as the Warden paled.
“You wouldn’t,” Dernal dared the Jedi.
“Try me.”
“You drive a hard bargain, Jedi.”
“Only because you have presented me with no other alternative. Now,” Qui-Gon politely urged, “shall we start from the beginning?”
“I’m not sure the Jedi Council would approve of your tactics,” Dernal taunted.
“They probably wouldn’t, but they aren’t here, are they?”
“I guess not.”
Qui-Gon leaned his large frame against the wall, his eyes following the Warden as the man stood up and started pacing the length of his cell. The Jedi didn’t trust Dernal, that much was for certain. He knew the Warden’s type all to well. Qui-Gon had seen firsthand what greed could do to people and this man was a prime example. Greed had created a monster in the form of Warden Dernal.
“Master Jinn, perhaps we can work a deal.”
“Really? What would that be?”
“I answer your questions and you guarantee me safe passage back to Kessel.”
The Jedi couldn’t help but to be amused by the Warden’s suggestion. It was obvious that Dernal was worried about the possibility of meeting Mangan again. Qui-Gon found himself curious about the relationship between the smuggler and the Warden.
“I think I’m going to have to hear what you have to say, before I make any kind of deal with you.” Qui-Gon knew that Dernal wouldn’t like his counter offer, but then again, the Warden didn’t have much choice. “You tell me what I need to know and then we’ll discuss your options.”
“That’s not how I usually work.”
“It is now. Do we have an agreement?” The Jedi waited, his hand extended.
“You seemed to have limited my options,” Dernal mumbled in disgust as he shook the Jedi’s hand.
“So I have.”
“What do you want to know?”
The Jedi Master breathed a sigh of relief. He was finally going to discover what had happened to Obi-Wan. Was he ready to know the truth? It didn’t matter. He had to know what happened in order to help his apprentice.
Qui-Gon began questioning Dernal, reaching out with the Force to sense any deception on the Warden’s part. “I want to know what you did to Obi-Wan to turn him against the Jedi.”
Dernal softly chuckled. “Perhaps I just awakened his dark side that was buried beneath that Jedi goodness.”
The Jedi bristled at Dernal’s insinuation. “There was no darkness in Obi-Wan.”
“There’s darkness in all of us. Even you, Master Jinn.”
“What did you do to him?” Qui-Gon forcibly repeated.
“You would have been proud of the boy. He resisted for a while. Has a high tolerance for pain that one does.”
Qui-Gon glared at Dernal as the man continued to meander about the small room. He could not give into his anger.
“The brain is very complex,” Dernal continued. “It discerns the truth, it keeps us focused on reality, and it helps us to tell the difference between right and wrong. But you know something? When the signals that make the brain function get crossed, then wrong becomes right, and lies become the truth, and an altered reality becomes the reality in which one now exists.”
“So that’s what you’ve done? You’ve crossed his signals so to speak?”
“That about sums it up.”
“How did you do it?” Qui-Gon wanted to know.
“Does it really matter?”
Qui-Gon let his stony silence serve as his answer.
“I guess it does,” the Warden retorted. “It’s actually very complicated to retrain the brain into believing something that isn’t true. But forcing the boy watch and relive the history that I created for him, he started believe that he hated the Jedi. Of course, after what you all did to that poor kid, who can blame him?”
“What was it that we supposedly did to him?” Qui-Gon reluctantly asked.
“I showed him images of the Jedi and how you all mistreated him from the time that you murdered his parents throughout the time he spent at the Temple.”
“You told him lies!”
“No, I just showed him what you Jedi were truly capable of.”
“You know nothing of the Jedi,” Qui-Gon snapped. “If you did, then you would know that we don’t kill needlessly and we certainly don’t torment our children.”
“You just cast the less fortunate aside when they don’t live up to your lofty expectations. In fact, you did that to your own Padawan, did you not?”
Qui-Gon paled. “How would you know that?”
“I have my ways,” Dernal sneered. “Anyway, once your apprentice couldn’t discern his reality from the one I implanted in his mind, he became very easy to persuade that he hated the Jedi. I demanded his loyalty and in turn I satisfied his thirst for revenge.”
“By supplying him with Jedi to kill,” Qui-Gon finished. Recalling his conversation with Siri, the Jedi pressed further. “He didn’t want to kill at first, did he?”
“No”, Dernal answered nonchalantly. “I had to use other means of persuasion at first, but soon he realized that it was in his best interest to comply with my requests. Soon he looked forward to his fights and killing the Jedi.”
“Other means? The collar I presume.”
“That and then threatening the girl.”
Qui-Gon clenched his jaw. He had to release the contempt he was feeling towards this man, but it was proving to be difficult. How dare Dernal force such atrocities upon his Padawan! “So you take a young boy who had never done anything to you and turn him into a murderer. There has to be another reason besides greed.”
“Revenge,” the Warden simply replied.
“Revenge? Revenge on who?”
“The Jedi.”
The Jedi stared at the Warden, shock clouding his leonine features. “The Jedi?”
“I gave your boy a new purpose in life,” Dernal boasted, “to extinguish the Jedi from the face of the galaxy.”
Qui-Gon choked back a sob that wanted to escape. He couldn’t lose the tenuous reign that he had over his emotions. Right now, he couldn’t let himself begin to consider the implications of Dernal’s words; he had more answers to draw out of the Warden.
“Did he ever start to remember his true past?” the Jedi quietly inquired.
“Once or twice. After I figured out what was happening, I took measures to prevent his memory from returning.”
“I assume that you are referring to the treatments that you subjected him to.”
The Master’s loathing of the man grew when the Warden merely smiled at the Jedi’s assessment. He didn’t need to hear the man’s answer for Dernal’s silence spoke volumes.
“So what happens when the treatments stop?”
Again the Jedi was met with silence. “Did you not hear my question?”
“I heard you, Jedi,” Dernal replied. “I’m just choosing not to answer. I agreed to tell you what I did to him. I didn’t promise to tell you anything else.”
“You’ll tell me or…”
“Or what, Jedi? What are you going to do to me? You won’t kill me. That would be going against your high and mighty code. Now it’s my turn to drive a hard bargain. If you want me tell you anything else, you will get me out of here and take me back to Kessel with a Jedi escort.”
Qui-Gon once again found himself glaring at Dernal. “It seems we are at a standstill,” the Jedi coolly stated.
“It depends on how badly you want to help that boy.”
In one swift movement, Qui-Gon had the Warden pinned against the wall, once again their faces barely centimeters apart. The Jedi had Dernal’s arms in his firm grasp, tightening his hold as the shorter man struggled.
“What are you going to do me?” Dernal nervously asked.
“Wouldn’t you like to know? Maybe I
will
just kill you if you don’t give tell me what I want to hear.”
“You’re a…a Jedi,” the Warden stammered.
“Yes, I am,” Qui-Gon agreed. “But I’m also a Master with a Padawan who doesn’t remember anything about me or his life, and right now I need some answers! Desperation can drive a man to do things that he normally wouldn’t do, and it can drive a Jedi as well.” The Jedi Master released Dernal’s arms and grabbed the Warden’s tunic. “Now, are you going to answer my question?”
“I don’t know!” the Warden shouted.
“You don’t know what?”
“I don’t know what would happen when the treatments stop! If you want to know the answer to that, ask Mangan.”
“What would Mangan know?”
“Just ask him. His brother…” Dernal abruptly hushed.
“You did this to Mangan’s brother?” Qui-Gon released the Warden with a final shove and the Warden sank to the floor. “No wonder he hates you so much. I should have let him have you.”
“You don’t mean that,” the Warden remarked.
A tiny smile nearly hidden beneath the Jedi’s bearded face served as his answer. Qui-Gon summoned the guard to the door. He had to get away from the Warden before he truly did something that he regretted. The Jedi needed to meditate, but at the same time, he wanted to be with Obi-Wan and he wanted to speak with Mangan. He decided that he would go back and check on the young man and then if Alano could stay a little while longer, he would go and seek the tranquility of the Force and try and locate the pilot.
As he stepped outside the cell, he heard Dernal call out to him.
“You’re not going to really give me to Mangan, are you?”
Qui-Gon walked on and headed towards the lift. It wasn’t until he was inside the car that he allowed his stoic resolve to crumble. He pinched the bridge of his nose, forbidding the tears to flow. He did not have time for this! There was too much to do. There would be a time for tears after Obi-Wan was better. But what if he didn’t get better? Then when would his tears come?
He fell back against the wall as a single tear finally escaped down his face. Reaching up he brushed it away and reached out for the comfort of the Force. The Force would have to give him strength because at the moment, he knew he couldn’t do what had to be done on his own.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ben was restless. He was tired, but sleep was elusive. Every muscle in his body ached and his head continued to throb. Whatever that healer had given him had clouded his mind and relaxed him to the point that he could barely think straight. He knew it would have been useless to try and get up because there was no way he could get past Alano, who had apparently deemed himself the young man’s personal guard.
A soft knock preceded the whoosh of the door as the healer entered the bedroom. Upon seeing the healer, Ben rolled his eyes and looked away towards the far wall. Why wouldn’t everybody just leave him alone? He hated the way that not only Alano, but everybody else, looked at him. It was a look that he considered to be a mixture of pity and disgust. Ben certainly didn’t care if they were disgusted by him and he certainly didn’t want their pity. Damn Jedi. He hated them. He hated them all.
“How are you feeling?” the healer asked, his hushed voice bringing Ben out of his self-imposed isolation.
The youth sighed in frustration. “What does it matter?”
“If you’re in pain, I can give you something,” Alano offered.
“I think you’ve done enough, don’t you?”
“Not if you’re still in pain.”
“Well, I’m not,” he lied unconvincingly, “so just leave me alone.”
Ben threw his left arm over his eyes, mainly so he wouldn’t have to look at the healer, but he also wanted to block the light out of his eyes. The brightness seemed to exacerbate the pounding in his head.
“There’s no need to try and put on a brave façade. Let me give you something for your head,” the healer suggested.
“You can’t,” Ben muttered. “It never stops hurting.”
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing.”
“You said the pain never goes away. How long have you had these headaches?”
“I don’t know.”
“Is there a time when the pain is worse?”
Ben moved his arm and glared at the Jedi healer. “Only when I’m around annoying Jedi who can do nothing but ask stupid questions.”
“Haven’t you ever heard that there are no stupid questions?”
“Whoever said that must have never had a conversation with you.”
The youth was caught off guard when the healer laughed. “I see you haven’t totally lost your sense of humor,” Alano quipped.
Ben scowled at the healer. Truth be known, he failed to find the humor in anything anymore. He hated being here. He was trapped. Frustrated, Ben clumsily swung his feet over the side of the bed. He didn’t know if he could muster the strength to stand, but he had to try.
“What do you think you’re doing?” the healer asked.
“I’m tired of laying in this bed.”
“You’ve had a difficult day. You really should be resting,” the healer tried to reason.
“And you really should quit telling me what to do.”
“Someone needs to.”
Ben pushed his lean frame to a standing position, quickly grabbing the nightstand to steady himself. Slowly straightening to his full height, he turned to face the healer. “It’s not going to be you.”
“Let me ask you something, Ben.”
“What?” Ben’s limited patience had nearly reached its limits with the persistent healer.
“What are you scared of?”
It was Ben’s turn to laugh. “Scared? I’m not scared of anything. The Jedi took my fear away a long time ago. Fear is a sign of weakness and I’m not weak. That was one lesson the Jedi taught me.”
“So, you’re not afraid of anything?”
“No.”
“I think you are,” Alano challenged.
“Really? What is it that you think I’m afraid of?”
“The truth.”
Ben’s gaze hardened. How dare this piece of Bantha fodder accuse him of being afraid of the truth? It was the Jedi who couldn’t face the truth. Their lofty ideas and misguided notions about right and wrong destroyed the lives of hopeful young children. He should know; they had ruined his.
The youth began to slowly walk around the bedroom, the nearly unbearable pain in his head preventing him from moving too fast. He stayed close to the wall, reaching out to catch himself when a wave of dizziness would try and consume him. Ben knew that the healer was watching his every move.
“You really should let me give you something,” Alano urged.
“There you go telling me what to do again,” Ben huffed, wiping a thin sheen of perspiration from his forehead.
Ben heard the door open once again, revealing the tiny form of the green troll that had been in the hangar bay when he first arrived. His distrustful glance shifted between Alano and the one called Yoda as they held a private exchange. It was just a few seconds later when Alano disappeared back through the door, leaving him alone with this prehistoric piece of Jedi scum.
“What do you want?” Ben grumbled.
“Speak with you, I wish to do,” Yoda replied as he hobbled over to the young man.
“I’m not in the habit of granting wishes to Jedi, unless your wish is for me to end your life.”
“No. A pleasant thing that would not be.”
“Then go away and leave me alone.”
Ben winced as the Jedi’s walking stick made contact with his shins. If he had the strength to spare, he would have taken that stick and used it on the irritating little elf. The teen began to once again make his way around the perimeter of the room, limping slightly, as the tiny Jedi climbed up into a chair.
“Sit down before you fall down, you should,” Yoda warned.
“I can take care of myself,” he shot back.
“Doing a good job, you are not.”
“I don’t recall asking for your opinion, gramps.”
“Ask you did not, but receive it you shall.”
Ben ignored the Jedi as he was forced to grab on to the wardrobe. He accidentally knocked a small cube off to the floor as he closed his eyes, fighting against the dizziness and nausea that had been plaguing him. The youth slid down the floor, his back against the wardrobe. He sat there with his eyes closed until the wooziness passed. Maybe he should take the healer up on his offer. What was he thinking? He couldn’t take anything from these Jedi. He
wouldn’t
take anything from the Jedi.
“Your obstinacy is serving no purpose,” the elder Jedi warned. “A means we have to ease your discomfort, but refuse it you have. Why?”
“I don’t want anything from you!”
The teen reached out and picked up the small cube that he had knocked off. He held it up in the air and studied it for a few minutes.
“That used to be one your most treasured items,” Yoda recalled. “It is a holo video. Contains special memories it does.”
“Special memories of what?”
“You and your Master, your friends, special times you’ve shared with many here at the Temple.”
“I have no special memories of the Temple. The only ones I have involve pain and humiliation.”
“Look at them you should. Remember what your life was.”
Ben took the cube and summoning what strength he could, he hurled it across the room. It hit the far wall and shattered into thousands of tiny pieces.
“I don’t want to remember that life!” he roared. “It brought me nothing but pain!”
“It seems that this new life is causing you pain as well,” Yoda observed. “Help you need.”
“How many times do I have to say it? I don’t
need
your help! I don’t
want
your help! All I
want
is for you to leave me alone!”
“That we can not do,” the Jedi sighed.
Ben started to lunge for the tiny Master but instead fell back against the wall, his hand cradling his head. The sheer agony nearly took his breath away. He closed his eyes to try and stave off the pain that was ripping through his skull. He wanted to scream but couldn’t. Ben couldn’t do anything but watch the images that began to assault his mind.
Awww... poor Ben! You're really making me feel horrible for him! I hope Qui-Gon let's the captain (I can't remember his name!) at Dernal. He deserves it.
Great update!
I agree, Qui-Gon should let Mangan have him. Nobody would have to be the wiser.
Great update! Keep up the good work!
