I'm wondering if these "images that began to assault his mind" are his real memories? thinking Or more of the same old lies and junk that Dernal forced on him? frustrated

I really really do hope that Qui lets Mangan have the warden. I'm sure he could figure out a way to make it look like an accident. devil

Yes, Qui-Gon should let the pilot have that horrible warden. He deserves everything he gets.

Good job. The confrontation was great. I liked how you did it.

I certainly hope those images are of his real life with the Jedi.

It's about time Obi-Wan started seeing the truth...weather he wants to or not.

I’m sure that Captain Mangan would be more than happy to fly you back.

'Bout time you started playing hardball, Qui-Gon.

Great update

So very good, I like that Qui-Gon is not being a passive Jedi
where Dernal is concerned. threats are better than being nice sometimes. whistling

Involving Yoda in the mix is excellent, he will not put up with Obi-Wans obstinate
attitude for long. alien_1
I wonder if he is remembering the good times, or the evil he committed against his friends. worried

I sense a great deal of angst coming. hugs

Part 24

“Are you up for some company?”

Siri’s eyes lit up at the sight of her friends. She eagerly pushed her tray back as she motioned for Bant and Garen to enter. Her Master had gone to their quarters to gather of few of her personal items and had not returned yet. She didn’t like being left alone even for a few minutes, a result of her time in captivity she supposed, but Siri knew that Adi wouldn’t be long. Now, with the arrival of her friends, she didn’t have to worry about being alone.

“I would love some company,” Siri cheerfully exclaimed. She hugged Bant and then Garen, carefully guarding her newly healed arm. “It’s so good to see you both.”

“It’s good to see you, too.” Bant wiped a stray tear from her silver eyes. “We were beginning to think that we would never see you or Obi again.”

“I was starting to have doubts as well,” Siri confessed.

“Well, the important thing is that you’re back now,” Garen added, trying to lighten the mood.

Siri gave a slight nod, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. She could easily sense that Bant and Garen were upset. Were they nervous about seeing her? No, that wasn’t it. There was something else bothering her companions.

She sat back against her pillow. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” Bant answered a bit to quickly.

“You’re a horrible liar, Bant.”

“I know,” the Mon Calamarian replied, wiping another tear as it trickled down her salmon colored cheek.

“We uh, we went to see Obi-Wan,” Garen told her. “I don’t think he was happy to see us.”

Siri sat up, alarm coursing through her veins. “What happened?”

Garen shrugged. “I pressed the door chime and waited a few seconds and then I used the pass code that Obi-Wan gave me a long time ago. We went in and Obi-Wan was there with some other Jedi. We called his name and he went ballistic. The other Jedi told us to go and find Master Jinn, so we did.”

“When we heard the two of you were back, we had to see you. We found out you were in the healer’s wing and Obi was at home, so we just thought that we would go and see Obi,” Bant reasoned. “I guess we were expecting…”

“That everything would be just like it was before we were captured,” Siri finished.

Bant and Garen nodded in unison. Siri’s heart broke for her dear friends. They didn’t realize how much things had changed during the time that she and Obi-Wan had been held prisoner. Neither of them knew that their best friend was a murderer and she wasn’t certain that they were prepared to know the truth.

“Obi-Wan had a very hard time in prison. I’m sure that it will take a while for him to begin feeling like himself again.” Siri hoped her answer would pacify Bant and Garen, but she had a feeling that they would not be so easily swayed.

“He acted like he didn’t even know us,” Bant recalled. “He started to come after us like he wanted to kill us. The other Jedi was holding him back. This wasn’t Obi. This was a stranger.”

“Like I said, things were hard for him. Just give him time.”

“Something’s wrong,” Bant pressed. “I know Obi and it never mattered before if he was hurting or if he was simply tired, he always made time for his friends.”

Siri’s tired eyes shifted between Bant and Garen. She could feel her own tears welling up as she listened to Bant indirectly pleading for Siri’s help to understand what was wrong with their friend. They wanted to help Obi-Wan and she could not fault them for that.

“Obi-Wan was brainwashed into believing he hated the Jedi,” Siri reluctantly explained. “He doesn’t remember his life at the Temple or as Master Jinn’s Padawan.”

“What?” Bant sat down in the chair beside Siri’s bed.

Siri closed her eyes, taking a moment to center herself. She allowed the Force to embrace her with its tendrils of warmth and comfort. The Force was like a breath of fresh air to her after being without it for so long. She was grateful that her friends gave her time to collect her thoughts, knowing that they probably needed the time as well to process what she had just revealed to them.

“I can’t believe it,” Garen whispered. “How can that be? Obi’s entire life revolved around the Jedi; how can he be brainwashed into hating what he’s always been?”

“I don’t know. But I do know that Obi-Wan must have fought it for as long as he could. After they took him away, I didn’t see him for a while. Then when they brought him back, he didn’t remember me.”

“So, he didn’t know you were a Jedi.”

“Not for a while.”

“How did he find out?” Bant finally managed to ask.

“The Warden told him.”

“Then what happened?”

“It wasn’t long after that we were rescued.” Siri wanted to spare them the horrid details of how Obi-Wan had tried to kill her just as he had the other Jedi. She didn’t even want to think about it; how could she talk about it?

She reached out to Bant and Garen, taking their hands in hers. “Promise me that no matter what happens or what you hear, you won’t turn your back on him.”

Siri saw Bant and Garen exchange confused glances.

“We would never do that,” Bant pledged. “He’s our friend.”

“Yes he is, and he’s going to need you both, especially if the healers are able to help him get his memory back.”

“There’s something you’re not telling us,” Garen observed.

“I can’t,” Siri softly cried. “Not now.”

She fell into the arms of her friends, thankful for their support and understanding. Siri knew that there would be no more questions for now. There would only be the sound of muffled sobs as three friends mourned for the one that no longer remembered them.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ben curled up on his side, his hands still clutching the sides of his head. His muddled thoughts wouldn’t let him keep up with the images that were ripping through his mind. The teen’s fingers were now entangled with his hair as jagged pieces of his memory tried to push their way into his awareness.
“More Jedi lies!” he roared. “Not true! Lies! Jedi lies!”
His eyes snapped open when a pair of strong hands sat him back up. Ben was now face to face with Healer Alano. The healer had placed his rough hands over his own, forcing Ben to look him in the eyes.
“Look at me, Ben!” Alano barked at the young man. “Look at me!”
Ben’s struggles grew as he tried to pull out of Alano’s grasp. He didn’t want the Jedi near him, much less touching him. He had to get away.
“Let go of me, you Son of a Bantha!” Ben swore through tightly clenched teeth.
“Tell me what you see!” the healer demanded.
“No!”
“Ben, what’s happening? Tell me what you see,” Alano gruffly ordered.
A guttural howl escaped from the teen’s throat. “Don’t! Just leave me alone!”
“Not until you tell me what you see.”
Ben jerked his head free from Alano’s hold and scrambled back to the corner. He felt like he was going to be sick again but he couldn’t find it within him to care at the moment. His mind was reeling as the pain intensified. He could no longer keep up with the reflections that were flashing before him, nor did he want to. If he lost his mind, so be it.
He barely registered the tiny claw like hand of the elder Jedi as it lightly brushed his forehead. Ben felt a gentle nudge in his mind as the images began to slow down. The teen could see the faces of the Jedi that he had killed, crying out to him, begging him to listen. He didn’t want to hear what they had to say.
“Listen you must to the voices of the dead,” Yoda insisted.
Ben shook his head. “No! I can’t!” He swore at the irritating Jedi. The voices were begging him to remember. The youth didn’t need help remembering. He could easily recall the expression on each of their faces as he delivered the killing blow. But they wanted him to remember something else. They kept encouraging him to remember his life as a Jedi, something that he had tried so hard to forget.
“Remember your former life you must,” the tiny Jedi whispered in his ear. “Died in vain they did not if remember your past you do.”
“I don’t want to!” Ben pushed the repulsive Jedi’s hand away from his head. He drew his knees up to his chest and buried his head, silently pleading for the voices of the dead to stop their incessant rambling. The pain in his head was becoming unbearable as their voices grew louder.
“Search your heart,” Yoda encouraged. “Know the truth you do. You are one of us.”
“Not anymore!” Ben spat.
Ben refused to look at the two Jedi kneeling beside him. He began to rock back and forth as the images of the slain Jedi began to fade, but their voices continued to echo in his mind. He could still hear them, but he could no longer see them. Instead he saw the face of a young boy calling out for his Master. He immediately recognized the lad as being a younger version of himself. His hair was shorter and he had a long single braid draped across his shoulder.
“Master?” Ben quietly called out. “Master? Where are you?”
The teen smashed his injured hand against the wall. “No! Jedi lies!”
“What do you see?” Alano pressed.
“Leave me alone!”
Ben pounded his fist into the wall again and would have continued to do so until the self inflicted pain could bring him back to reality, but the healer grabbed his hand and held it tightly.
“Injuring yourself further will not help anything,” Yoda said.
“I told you that I didn’t want your help!” A single tear escaped down Ben’s cheek. “Why won’t you listen to me?”
He didn’t see the worried exchange between Alano and Yoda as more tears began to stream down his face. Ben didn’t know why he was crying. The last time he had cried had been when his parents were brutally murdered by the Jedi. He searched his memory for their faces, but he couldn’t find them in the midst of the chaos that was continually ravaging his mind. Why couldn’t he remember their faces? He tried harder, but the only face that he saw was that of Qui-Gon Jinn.
Ben cried harder as his tears now began to drip off his face onto his tunic. He grabbed his stomach as he felt the now familiar wave of nausea try to overtake him. The image of Qui-Gon Jinn was now calling out to the lost boy. The boy was running towards the Jedi.
“No!” Ben shouted. “It’s a trap! Stay away from him!”
The youth saw the boy embrace the tall Jedi. “What are you doing? He’s going to hurt you!”
The teen once again emptied the contents of his stomach as the merging realities became too much for his mind to process. “Don’t go with him,” he quietly pleaded with the boy. “Don’t go with him.”
Ben watched in his mind as the young boy took Qui-Gon’s hand and followed him willingly. “No,” he murmured to himself. The pain in his head began to abate ever so slightly, but the teen was more confused than before. He closed his eyes and clumsily wiped away the tears from his face. Ben couldn’t believe that he had lost control of his emotions in front of these two Jedi. What was wrong with him? Was he beginning to doubt his purpose?
“Lay here on the floor, you can not,” Yoda gently urged.
Ben felt a warm rag gently wash his face, cleaning him up from his latest bout of vomiting. He was too spent to fight the ministrations of the healer.
“Just leave me alone,” the teen gasped.
“That is not what you want. Listen to your heart instead of your mind.”
The teen didn’t utter a protest as Alano picked him up off the ground and carried him into the bedroom. He allowed the healer to lay him on the bed and then he curled up into a fetal position, his back to the two Jedi. Ignoring the healer's offer of a fresh tunic, he remained motionless, wishing that he would wake up from this nightmare that had become his life. Ben heard the door open. He didn’t have to look to see who had just entered the room.
“I heard him call out to me,” Qui-Gon informed Alano and Yoda.
Ben tensed at the words that were uttered by the depraved Jedi. He chose to remain silent. He did not have the strength or the desire to argue with this man.
“A good sign that is,” acknowledged Yoda. “Perhaps coming back to us he is.”
The teen sat up and glared at the trio of Jedi. Whether he had the energy or not, he could not allow that comment to slip by unnoticed. “I have no intention of coming back to you. Why would I want to come back to the Jedi? All you all have done is brought me pain.”
His steely gaze warily followed the tall Jedi as Qui-Gon sat down on the foot of the bed. Ben moved back until he was resting against the headboard. What he wouldn’t give for a vibroblade or something to slit this Jedi’s throat so he would no longer have to listen to him.
“You called out to me, Ben. I heard you. It was faint, but yet it was you. You needed me,” Qui-Gon gently reasoned.
“Don’t flatter yourself, you Sithspawn. I don’t need you!”
“Then why did you call out to me?”
The young man’s cheeks burned with fury. “I didn’t call out to you.”
“I beg to differ,” Alano interjected. “You called out for your Master.”
“I have no Master!” Ben growled.
Ben saw Alano open his mouth to protest, but he was silenced by the stern expression of Qui-Gon Jinn.
“It’s all right, Alano. It will take him time. You rest for now, young one,” Qui-Gon suggested.
“Leave. All of you leave.”
Ben waited until all three Jedi had left the room before he lay back down. He knew that the boy in his vision had called out for his Master. Could he have done uttered those words and not realized it? Why would he ever call Qui-Gon Jinn his Master? He hated this man with every fiber of his being. At least he thought he did. Now, he wasn’t so sure.
He flung his arm over his eyes to block out the early morning light that was filtering through the window. Why couldn’t he think straight? He had to get out of this room and get away from these Jedi. Frustrated, Ben sat up and looked around the room. He quickly spotted what he was searching for. Over on the far wall there was an access panel.
The youth quietly got up and went over and examined the panel. Peering between the slotted vents, he could make out a small crawl space. It would be a tight fit, but he had to try. He had to get away. He quietly lifted the panel and squeezed his wiry frame into the hole. Ben slowly began to make his way through the ventilation shaft. He wasn’t sure where he was going, but that didn’t matter. The teen was determined to find a place where he could collect his thoughts and figure out how he was going to kill Qui-Gon Jinn and the other damnable Jedi in the Temple.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Qui-Gon Jinn almost felt giddy. Despite what the boy wanted to believe, he had called out to him. He had been on his way to the quarters when he felt the familiar cultured tone float across their bond. The Jedi had quickened his stride in order to come and see what had just happened. He was so caught up in the memory of his Padawan calling to him that he had not been paying attention to the conversation between Yoda and Alano.

“What do you think, Qui-Gon?” Alano asked, interrupting the Jedi Master’s musings.

“About what?”

“About your Padawan,” the healer impatiently replied.

“I think that he’s going…” Qui-Gon looked over his shoulder towards the bedroom. Something wasn’t right. In two strides, he was at the door and palming it open. Stepping inside, he looked around for the young man that should have been resting on the bed.

“He’s gone.”

Yoda and Alano joined Qui-Gon as they searched the small room. Qui-Gon saw that the covering to the ventilation duct looked as if it had been removed and hurriedly replaced. He pulled it off and stared through the dark space.

“He’s gone through here,” the Jedi announced.

“Are you sure?” the healer asked.

“Yes.” Qui-Gon stood as he held up a ragged piece of material. “He must have caught his sleeve on something.”

“We have to find him before he comes into contact with any other Jedi,” Alano remarked.

“Well, I can’t fit through there,” Qui-Gon retorted, looking down at the tiny green Master.

Qui-Gon almost smiled when Yoda sighed in disgust. “Owe me for this you and your Padawan will.”

The bearded Jedi nodded, stepping aside to allow Master Yoda access to the crawl space. “We will go to the main control center and see if we can figure out which direction he’s headed in.”

As soon as Yoda had disappeared from their sight, Qui-Gon and Alano darted out of the quarters and made their way to the control center. Qui-Gon couldn’t believe that he had let his guard down and allowed Obi-Wan to escape. He should have remembered that panel. Obi-Wan had used it once before when he had tried to sneak out and meet his friends at Dex’s. He wondered if the youth had remembered doing that. Probably not.

As the two Jedi waited for the lift, Qui-Gon said a silent prayer to the Force that they would find his apprentice before anything else happened. He shuddered to think what would happen if Obi-Wan met any other Jedi.

Qui-Gon silently willed the lift to hurry, but of course, it seemed to be moving slower than usual. He was tempted to take the steps but as he was about to suggest it, the doors opened revealing an empty car. He motioned for Alano to enter and he followed, pushing the button for the level that he needed. Qui-Gon hoped that they wouldn’t be too late.
