Although this is tense, I found it amusing that Yoda had to go after Ben. Poor kid. He's so confused and it will be even worse if he hurts anyone else while he's trying to escape!

Great job.

Aww... cry Poor Ben, poor friends...

I'm back, hours later, to add what I couldn't earlier...

“Like I said, things were hard for him. Just give him time.”

“Something’s wrong,” Bant pressed. “I know Obi and it never mattered before if he was hurting or if he was simply tired, he always made time for his friends.”

Siri’s tired eyes shifted between Bant and Garen. She could feel her own tears welling up as she listened to Bant indirectly pleading for Siri’s help to understand what was wrong with their friend. They wanted to help Obi-Wan and she could not fault them for that.

“Obi-Wan was brainwashed into believing he hated the Jedi,” Siri reluctantly explained. “He doesn’t remember his life at the Temple or as Master Jinn’s Padawan.”

“What?” Bant sat down in the chair beside Siri’s bed.

Siri closed her eyes, taking a moment to center herself. She allowed the Force to embrace her with its tendrils of warmth and comfort. The Force was like a breath of fresh air to her after being without it for so long. She was grateful that her friends gave her time to collect her thoughts, knowing that they probably needed the time as well to process what she had just revealed to them.

“I can’t believe it,” Garen whispered. “How can that be? Obi’s entire life revolved around the Jedi; how can he be brainwashed into hating what he’s always been?”

That's why it'll be so hard for Obi, probably harder for him even than his friends. His behavior was imposed on him.

I'm not an apologist for people who commit crimes, nor am I privy to all the details (plus it's been DECADES) but I always thought people like Patty Hearst who were kidnapped and brainwashed can't be truly be held accountable for what they do in "collusion" with their kidnappers. Everyone - every human being - can only take so much before they are remade.

I may be wrong, but I believe that anyone can do anything pushed far enough - and one can't blame the victim for being so victimized.

I hope - truly hope - the Jedi have the compassion within them to come to realize this. Brain-washed Obi is a murderer - not Obi-Wan.

Poor kid, he's flying by the seat of his pants here. Wonder if he'll unconciously end up somewhere in the Temple he's always enjoyed going for peace and quiet. thinking

His calling for Qui-Gon may have been an unconcious act on his part, but it's still progress, a small step toward regaining his memories. happy

Awesome post!

Good that Siri was able to tell Bant and Garen about what happened to Obi. Hopefully she can tell that he was the "Jedi Killer"...it would be bad if they were to hear it from someone else, less sympathetic to Obi's plight. worried

Ah, it looks like some of his true memories are returning! dancing The fact that he called out to Qui is definitely a good sign. Unfortunately he seems to be denying them.... hopefully he'll come around. But how he will deal with what he's done when he does realize the truth... sad

Eep, Obi has escaped. At least Yoda is on the search! alien_1

Well done and looking forward to more! applause

I hope they find Obi-Wan soon, before he runs into anyone. worried Good thing Yoda was there!

I'm caught up again at last! dancing

“What was it that we supposedly did to him?” Qui-Gon reluctantly asked.

“I showed him images of the Jedi and how you all mistreated him from the time that you murdered his parents throughout the time he spent at the Temple.”

Poor, poor Obi-Wan. sad

“Just ask him. His brother…” Dernal abruptly hushed.

“You did this to Mangan’s brother?” Qui-Gon released the Warden with a final shove and the Warden sank to the floor. “No wonder he hates you so much. I should have let him have you.”

Yeah, Qui-Gon you should give him to Mangan.

“Obi-Wan was brainwashed into believing he hated the Jedi,” Siri reluctantly explained. “He doesn’t remember his life at the Temple or as Master Jinn’s Padawan.”

“What?” Bant sat down in the chair beside Siri’s bed.

Poor Bant and Garen, having to hear the last thing they ever expected to hear.

Ben jerked his head free from Alano’s hold and scrambled back to the corner. He felt like he was going to be sick again but he couldn’t find it within him to care at the moment. His mind was reeling as the pain intensified. He could no longer keep up with the reflections that were flashing before him, nor did he want to. If he lost his mind, so be it.

Yay! He's starting to remember! grin

“I heard him call out to me,” Qui-Gon informed Alano and Yoda.

Ben tensed at the words that were uttered by the depraved Jedi. He chose to remain silent. He did not have the strength or the desire to argue with this man.

“A good sign that is,” acknowledged Yoda. “Perhaps coming back to us he is.”

Awesome, so I suppose their bond isn't gone after all, just forgotten.

“Well, I can’t fit through there,” Qui-Gon retorted, looking down at the tiny green Master.

Qui-Gon almost smiled when Yoda sighed in disgust. “Owe me for this you and your Padawan will.”

laugh Poor Yoda!

And yikes I hope they catch Obi-Wan before he hurts anyone. worried

p_stotts: It's great that Obi is starting to remember, but horrible that he has to go through so much in order to regain his true memories.

The only problem is that they are coming in bits in pieces and nothing is making any sense to him. Thank you so much for reading and for your kind words! hugs The next post is coming up!

Part 25

Master Adi Gallia had gathered Siri’s personal belongings and was prepared to head back to the healer’s wing. She had easily sensed her Padawan’s fear at being left alone and Adi had briefly considered not leaving the girl’s side until Siri felt more secure. Then she caught a glimpse of her apprentice’s steely reserve as the teen released her anxieties to the Force, assuring Adi that she would be fine. She had been proud of Siri’s determination and willingness to face her demons and conquer them.

The Jedi had then placed a gentle kiss on the top of Siri’s head, promising that she would not be gone long. After she left Siri alone, Adi had reached out several times, nudging their bond, making sure that she was all right. Once the Jedi learned that Bant and Garen had arrived, she allowed Siri some privacy with her friends.

Adi noticed a light flickering on the comm unit indicating that she had a message. She pushed the button to play the message and was surprised to learn that it was from Cordo Mangan.

“Now that’s interesting,” she mumbled to herself. “He’s willing to help now. I wonder what changed his mind.”

She sat down at the console to reply to the message. Why was she so hesitant? Before, she had literally begged the pilot for his help and he had adamantly refused. Adi did not like to assume the worst, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that Cordo had an ulterior motive. The Councilor had not forgotten the smuggler’s personal vendetta against Warden Dernal.

Taking a deep breath, she activated the comm unit, placing a call to the pilot. Adi was actually relieved that he wasn’t answering, so she left a brief message of her own. Maybe now she would have the chance to speak with Qui-Gon about Cordo’s sudden desire to help. Adi knew that Cordo Mangan could possibly make a difference in Obi-Wan’s recovery, but would the Jedi Order be willing to pay the price that she believed that he would demand?

Making certain that she had everything, the Jedi Master headed back to her apprentice. Reaching into the Force, she sensed her Padawan’s sorrow. Adi knew that she, Bant, and Garen were more than likely talking about Obi-Wan. It was good for Siri to have someone to talk to, but the Councilor also knew that Siri would not divulge too much information to her friends. She wouldn’t want to burden them with the knowledge of everything that happened.

Adi palmed open the door to Siri’s room. She saw Siri embracing Bant and Garen, each one trying to comfort the other. The Jedi stood by quietly, allowing time for the trio to collect themselves. Siri was the first to pull away. As Bant and Garen said their goodbyes, Adi stepped forward, gently smiling at the three Padawans.

“We’ll stop by later,” Garen promised.

“You both are welcome at any time,” Adi stated.

“Thank you, Master Gallia,” Bant softly replied, bowing to the Councilor.

Adi moved to stand beside Siri as Bant and Garen left the Master and Padawan alone. The Jedi took her hand and tucked a stray piece of hair behind the girl’s ear. “Are you all right?”

Siri drew her knees up to her chest. “I guess so. They wanted to know what happened to Obi-Wan. They had stopped by his quarters to see him and you can probably figure out what happened.”

“It wasn’t quite the welcome they were expecting.”

“No,” Siri sighed. “I told them that he had been brainwashed into believing that he hated the Jedi. I couldn’t tell them that he…that he had actually killed other Jedi. I just couldn’t do it.”

“That was probably wise.”

“I don’t know. I hope I did the right thing.”

Adi patted the teen’s arm. “You listened to your heart in this matter. I probably would have done the same thing.”

“Thank you,” Siri whispered.

Adi wished with all her heart that she could take Siri’s pain away. The Jedi Master released her own anger to the Force. She had to remember that Siri was safe now and that in time, her apprentice would be able to put this nightmare behind her.

“I’ve brought you some of your things,” Adi said, changing the subject to get the young girl’s mind off of Obi-Wan.

“I appreciate that, Master.” Siri took the bag and began to explore its contents.

“The Jedi Master smiled at Siri as the girl pulled out her favorite sleep gown.

“I’m going to take a shower and change,” the Padawan excitedly announced.

“Take your time,” Adi urged. “I’ll be right here if you need me.”

The Councilor sat down and waited. It was so good having Siri home again. The void that had taken control of her life had now been filled. Adi knew it would be a while before she let her Padawan out of her sight again. Maybe she was being a bit too protective, but right now, she needed to protect Siri. For over a year, Adi had lost count of the sleepless nights she spent wondering if her Padawan was alive. She never wanted to go through something like that again.

Closing her eyes, she called upon the Force, letting it flow through her, ebbing away her feelings of frustration and inadequacy. The Force had given Adi a second chance with her Padawan, a gift that she accepted with great reverence. Drawing from the strength of the Force, she vowed to never fail her apprentice again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ben knew he couldn’t crawl through these ducts forever. He was growing weaker, his vision becoming increasingly blurred, and the throbbing in his head was made worse by the echoes traveling through the ventilation shaft. He paused long enough to wipe the sweat from his forehead and to glance back over his shoulder. The teen knew that he was more than likely being followed by someone and that knowledge urged him to press on.
“They probably sent that little troll after me,” Obi-Wan whispered to himself. “He’s the only one who could fit.”
The young man continued on until he came to a dead end. Immediately realizing his mistake, he began to berate himself for not paying close enough attention to where he was going. Ben knew that if he turned around and headed back, he would more than likely run into his pursuer. He peered through the grate and saw that the room appeared to be empty. At least that was something going in his favor.
Carefully turning himself around in the closed in space, he mustered all the strength that he could and kicked the panel off. It fell to the floor with a clang and Ben quickly scooted out of the air duct and shakily stood up. He brushed himself off and looked around the room. It was still empty, permitting Ben to breathe a sigh of relief.
Holding on to the wall, he slowly made his way towards the door. Ben clumsily palmed open the door and went into the next room. As the door closed behind him, he leaned heavily against it and rubbed his eyes. “Get it together,” he muttered.
“Obi Nobi Nobi!” a young voice cried out, startling the bewildered teen.
Before he knew what was happening, he was surrounded by at least six small children with a dozen more heading straight for him. They began grabbing onto his tunic as their screams of excitement grew louder and louder.
“Obi Nobi is back!” one child gleefully exclaimed.
“Will you play with us?” another asked.
“We’ll let you hide first and we promise to not find you too quick,” a third child vowed.
“We’ve missed you, Obi Nobi!”
Ben swallowed hard. Where did these children come from and why were they surrounding him? He closed his eyes tightly, hoping that when he opened them that they would all go away. The teen dared to open them again, but this brood of miniature Jedi were still calling his name and mauling him with their tiny hands.
“Obi Nobi, are you sick?” a young boy finally asked.
The youth couldn’t answer. He just wanted them to leave him alone. Ben tried to find the sensor that would open the door back up into the empty room that he just came out of, but when two of the younger children grabbed his arm and began pulling him away, he was forced to reluctantly follow them. What was wrong with him? He was allowing children to lead him around like he had no mind of his own.
He yanked his arm away and glared at the small Jedi. Ben’s hardened gaze studied each inquisitive face as they stared at him, their faces a mixture of confusion and curiosity.
“What’s wrong, Obi Nobi?” a quivering voice reluctantly inquired.
“Nothing,” he stuttered. “You all truly have no idea what your future holds, do you?”
“Are you going to play with us or not?”
“No, I’m not. I don’t have time to play games,” he barked.
Nonplussed, a young dark haired boy stepped forward. “What’s wrong with you, Obi Nobi? You used to always have time to play with us.”
Before Ben could answer, he heard a slight gasp coming from the back of the room. He looked up to discover what he assumed to be the person in charge of these annoying brats, staring at him as if he had two heads.
“Look who’s here, Master To’chiv. It’s Obi Nobi Nobi!” the children began shouting again.
“I can see that,” the Jedi Master said warily. “Padawan Kenobi, I didn’t know you were back.”
“It is him!” the children proclaimed. “It’s really him!”
“Children, I can see that,” To’chiv patiently said. “It’s time for you to go and prepare for our field trip to the city.”
“Can Obi Nobi go with us?”
“Uh…maybe another time,” the Jedi replied.
“If you kids know what’s good for you, as soon as you get the chance, you’ll get away from this place and the Jedi.”
The children froze and stared at him in disbelief. It didn’t matter, these kids deserved to know the truth. “You’re condemning yourself to a life of pain. The Jedi tell you nothing but lies and half truths to get you trust them and then they take that trust and shatter it. Believe me, you don’t want to be a Jedi!”
“Padawan Kenobi!” the crèche Master snapped. “That is enough. What do you think you’re doing?”
“What am I doing? I’m not the one filling these kids’ heads with lies and false promises. I don’t want them to end up like me.”
“Padawan, don’t you see how much these children love you?” the Jedi pressed.
“Love is highly overrated,” Ben growled.
Ben’s attention was once again drawn to the children, who were now whimpering; some were even beginning to cry. “Your tears will not gain you any mercy from the Jedi. They are useless.”
The teen watched as the Jedi Master began to herd the children away from him. That was good. He didn’t want them around him. Master To’chiv was the last one out of the room. The Jedi had spared a final glance at Ben and then quickly stepped through allowing the door to close. Ben slumped back against the wall; that encounter had taken a lot out of him. He knew that he could not stay here long. The teen was certain that the Jedi Master would notify Qui-Gon and the others of where he was.
Forcing himself to stand up, he started to go through the same door that the children had just left through. When he tried to open the door, he discovered that it had been locked. That blasted Jedi had locked him in this room. He tried to go back through the other door only, but it was locked as well.
Ben hit the door with his fist. “Son of a Sith! Someone let me out of here!”
There was no answer, so he began to pound even harder. “I know you can hear me! Let me out of here! Let me out of here!”
Again, his pleas were met with silence. “Let me out here!” he continued to scream. He began to pace, holding onto the wall for support. “I want out of here. You have no right to keep me here.”
The door finally opened to reveal Qui-Gon Jinn standing before him. “Nice try,” the Jedi Master quipped.
“If it hadn’t been for those stupid kids, I would have been long gone,” Ben growled.
“Remind me to thank them. It took me over a year to find you, I certainly don’t want to lose you again.”
“Why do you care?”
“You’re my Padawan. You’re the…”
“Spare me. I don’t want to hear it.”
The room began to spin and Ben reached out blindly to steady himself. Trying to get back to the wall, he stumbled and fell into Qui-Gon’s arms. “Let me go!” he demanded.
“I can’t do that,” the Jedi coolly replied.
“Yes, you can.”
“You can barely stand. At least let me help you to a chair.”
The teen didn’t protest as the Jedi sat him down in the nearest chair and knelt in front of him. “Now, that wasn’t so bad, was it?”
Ben glared at the irritating Jedi. “Now, leave me alone.”
“No.”
“You never wanted me, so don’t start now.”
“Why would you say that?”
The teen closed his eyes as the images began to play through his mind once again. There was the boy and this time he was watching a ship leave. There was fighting all around the child and he didn’t know what to do. Ben opened his eyes and stared into Qui-Gon Jinn’s worried face. “You left me. You left me there.”
“What? Ben, what are you talking about?”
“You left me there to die! You left me in the middle of a war!”
Ben tried to get up, but was restrained by Qui-Gon’s firm grasp. “Tell me what you’re talking about.”
“You were in a ship and you left me!”
“Ben…”
“Don’t deny it!”
“I won’t, but you’re not seeing the whole picture.”
“It’s just like I told those kids. You Jedi are nothing but liars who take a child’s dream and crush it until that dream becomes a nightmare.”
“Ben, you know deep down in your heart that what you are saying isn’t true.”
“Isn’t it?” Ben demanded.
“No, it isn’t.”
The teen was tired of arguing. In fact, he was exhausted. He had no energy left to fight the Jedi Master, but he knew that he had to summon the strength to do something.
“It’s time to quit running, Ben.”
“It’s time for you to die.”
With a burst of adrenaline, Ben kicked out at Qui-Gon, knocking the Jedi Master to the floor. Knowing he had surprised the Jedi, the teen took Qui-Gon’s few seconds of confusion and grabbed his lightsaber. He stood to his full height and activated it. The emerald green blade shone brightly as Ben awkwardly waved it at the Jedi. “Now back off,” he ordered.
The teen slowly stood up as Qui-Gon did the same and took a step back.
“Ben, please give that back to me.”
“You want it? Come and get it.”
The young man’s feral grin spread across his pale face; anger radiated from his pale blue-green eyes.
“Ben, please. I don’t want you to get hurt.” Qui-Gon reached out his hand towards Ben.
“Why are you worried about that now?”
The teen rushed towards the Jedi, lightsaber poised to strike. He never got the chance as the weapon flew from his hand into that of Qui-Gon Jinn.
Ben’s breathing came in short gasps as he glared at the Jedi. “Afraid to fight me without…that Force of yours?”
“I’m not going to fight you.”
“Then you are a coward.”
“Ben…”
“No! Don’t say anything! I’m tired of listening to you!”
He forced his way past Qui-Gon and headed towards the door that the Jedi had entered, hoping that the lock had been disengaged. Ben smiled when he discovered that his escape was not blocked and palmed open the door. The teen knew that Qui-Gon was following him and would more than likely capture him if he didn’t think of something quick.
Up ahead in the hallway, he saw the same group of children from his earlier encounter. He grabbed the first child that was in his reach and held him close. Ignoring the scream of the young boy he was holding, Ben whirled around to face the Jedi Master.
“Stay away from me,” he warned Qui-Gon.
“Ben, this is not the way,” Qui-Gon said.
“I need a way out of here and I’ve got it. So, you better get out of my way.”
Ben stared at the Jedi Master, waiting for his next move. He had the child in a position that all he would have to do was shift his weight and the boy would be dead. One way or another, he was leaving this place. Ben waited for the Jedi Master’s decision.
Sorry I didn't catch the last update! This is really good! Obi taking one hostage... will he ever learn?
I can't wait to see what happens!
That is a truly evil cliffhanger! raised_brow You should be ashamed of yourself for torturing your readers like that. shame_on_you wink
Great post. I wonder how Qui-Gon will handle this one. He can't let Obi-Wan escape, and he can't let him kill the child. I think maybe it's Master Yoda to the rescue.
