I cannot believe Qui-Gon let him leave like that
and where is Master Yoda
Now I feel sorry for the little child, how could Obi-Wan even think about hurting a little one.
Qui-Gon do something! Now!
once again you have me on the edge of my seat, and I some how believe you will keep
me there for some time to come.

Obi-Wan better not hurt that kid! I figure Qui is a Jedi Master. He'll think of something.
Good job. I liked what you added to the post!

Obi, Obi, Obi
It'll be interesting to see how Qui-Gon deals with this latest outburst. I don't believe he'll let Obi anywhere near the Temple door.
I can't wait to see what Cordo has up his sleeve now.
Great update

Well done! You never know what that bratty Ben is going to pull next. I'm starting to want him booted out of the temple!

I was about to say I was glad he didn't hurt the children, and then he goes and uses a child as a human shield and hostage to get his way out.
I hope they can stop him and no one gets hurt.
I think Qui-Gon needs to reflect on what Ben said about being left in the middle of a war. It sounded like he may have been remembering Melida/Daan.
Great job with this! The tension is building.

I'm caught up!
I had these printed out to read on one of the many car trips I've been taking lately, but only found them sitting in my drawer last night. I read all three instead of sleeping.
Very good. Heh heh heh, I want more now! You can't end them with Obi-Wan nearly killing a child! It's just. . . a very good way to make people to want to read, that's what.
Amazing job, sorry I'm so horrible at keeping up.

Obi taking one hostage... will he ever learn?
It will probably take a few more hard lessons before he learns anything...
Actually, his this situation will resolve itself rather easily. Thank you so much for reading. I'm glad that you are enjoying it.
p_stotts:
That is a truly evil cliffhanger! You should be ashamed of yourself for torturing your readers like that.
Sorry about that...well, not really.
Great post. I wonder how Qui-Gon will handle this one. He can't let Obi-Wan escape, and he can't let him kill the child.
Don't worry, Qui-Gon will come up with something...I hope!

RE: Remembrance (JA: Obi, Qui, Siri, AU) Updated 7/1! Thank you for the noms!!
Part 26
Qui-Gon knew that he had to do something. The young boy in Obi-Wan’s arms was remaining surprisingly calm considering the situation. Fortunately this allowed the Master to focus on his Padawan.
His Padawan. This wasn’t
his
Padawan and he had to remember that. He had to remember that this was a stranger who knew nothing of the selflessness and compassion of Obi-Wan Kenobi. This was Ben. This was someone who was scared and was expressing himself the only way he knew how. He was trying to evoke fear in those around him and it was working, except Qui-Gon wasn’t afraid of Obi-Wan. He was afraid
for
Obi-Wan.
“Ben,” the Jedi softly called out. “You need to let the boy go.”
“No,” Obi-Wan snarled. “Not until I get out of here.”
“Ben, you’re scaring him. Please let him go.”
“He should be scared. He should be terrified of the life that awaits him. A life full of empty promises and lies,” the teen spat.
“Ben, please, listen to me.”
Qui-Gon took a tentative step towards Obi-Wan, his hands held out, hoping that the youth would believe that he meant no harm. “Ben…”
“Quit talking!” Obi-Wan shouted at the Jedi. “I’m not interested in what you have to say. Now, I’m getting out of here and I suggest that you somehow tell all of your Jedi friends to back off.”
“Take me instead,” Qui-Gon blurted out, surprising even himself.
Offering himself in exchange for the youngling had not been part of his original plan, but Qui-Gon firmly believed that everything happened for a reason and if offering himself up as Obi-Wan’s hostage was part of a greater scheme, he would not question the wisdom of the Force.
The Jedi inwardly shuddered when Obi-Wan’s gaze narrowed. It wounded the Jedi Master to know that the eyes that once held a desire for knowledge now held contempt and hatred.
“What did you say?” the teen asked.
“I said that you can take me. Leave the boy with Master To’chiv and I will go with you.”
Obi-Wan shook his head. “Do you really think that I’m that stupid? I give up the kid and then you give me a sleep suggestion or knock me out with a Force shove, or draw your saber on me. Forget it, Jedi.”
“I will do none of those things, I promise you. You have my word as a Jedi.”
Obi-Wan’s laughter echoed in the tiny room. “Your word as a Jedi means nothing to me.”
Qui-Gon took yet another step towards Obi-Wan. He took his lightsaber from his utility belt and handed it to the teen. “Take it.”
“I’m not falling for your tricks,” Obi-Wan growled, taking a clumsy step backwards.
“No tricks,” the Jedi Master pledged. “I just want to show you that I will keep my word. I’ll give you the lightsaber and you release the boy. I will go with you peacefully.”
“I don’t…believe you.”
“Ben?”
Qui-Gon took yet another step towards Obi-Wan when the boy fell back against the wall. As the teen closed his eyes, he started sliding down the wall. In one swift movement, Qui-Gon removed the child from Obi-Wan’s arms, handed him to the crèche Master, and caught Obi-Wan before he hit the floor. The young man was drenched in sweat and the putrid stench of vomit was present on his tunic. He held Obi-Wan’s head between his calloused hands and stared into the pain-filled eyes. Qui-Gon gently called the young man’s name.
“Ben? Ben can you hear me?”
The teen had opened his mouth as if he wanted to speak, but the words refused to come out. Qui-Gon moved to cradle Obi-Wan’s trembling form in his arms. He ignored the cries of the small children as they were ushered out of the room, leaving the two of them alone. The Jedi knew that To’chiv would handle the children and he could now give his full attention to Obi-Wan. He reached up and brushed the teen’s hair out of his face, whispering his name, hoping for a response.
“Ben, can you hear me? Ben? I need you to answer me.”
He studied his Padawan’s agonized expression. The boy was in excruciating pain, that much was for certain. “Ben, please talk to me.”
“My head,” the boy gasped. “My head hurts, please…make it stop. I can’t…stop…”
“Stop what? Ben, please.”
Qui-Gon heard the door open. Sparing a glance over his shoulder, he was relieved to discover Yoda had joined him. He was aware that the Grand Jedi Master wasn’t pleased about crawling through the ducts searching for Obi-Wan, but that was inconsequential at the moment. Qui-Gon was sure that he would have to reciprocate the favor at some point in his life.
“Something is wrong,” Qui-Gon stated. “I can feel it.”
When Obi-Wan didn’t flinch at Master Yoda’s touch, it only added to Qui-Gon’s concerns. He quietly waited while Yoda sought the council of the Force. After only a few seconds, Yoda met Qui-Gon’s stare.
“What is it?” Qui-Gon demanded to know.
“Something is not right inside his mind. To the healer’s we must take him.”
Qui-Gon nodded and gently picked Obi-Wan up in his arms. “Tell Alano that I will meet him there.”
The Jedi Master began his journey towards the healer’s wing. His long strides covered the distance quickly but he couldn’t avoid the other Jedi in the corridors. Now, the entire Temple would know that his apprentice had returned and Qui-Gon knew it would not be long before everyone knew what his Padawan had become.
He quickened his pace as Obi-Wan’s moans grew louder. The young man’s cries of agony ripped at Qui-Gon’s heart. It didn’t matter what Obi-Wan had done or had been forced to do, all that did matter was the fact that his apprentice was in pain. Gone were the doubts that had earlier plagued the Jedi, replaced by concern for the boy in his arms.
Qui-Gon was glad that no one attempted to stop and question him about Obi-Wan. He realized that many of the Jedi that he had passed knew Obi-Wan and were interested in his well being, but they were also able to sense the Jedi’s urgency in getting help for the ailing teen. When the time came to answer those difficult questions that would be asked, he had no idea how he would even begin to explain what had happened.
The Jedi finally reached the lift. He nodded his thanks to the Knight that was holding the door for them. Once the door closed, Qui-Gon closed his eyes and reached out to the Force to soothe his warring emotions. The Jedi only permitted himself a brief respite before he was once again completely focused on Obi-Wan.
“It’s going to be all right, Ben,” he whispered, hoping to comfort the hurting youth. “I know you’re in pain, but the healers will help you.”
“N…No…hurt me,” Obi-Wan mumbled.
“They won’t hurt you, I promise.”
“Told you…word…no good.”
“I’m going to prove to you that you can trust me,” Qui-Gon vowed.
“Got…your…work…cut out…stinking…Jedi.”
“I’m not afraid of a little hard work,” the Jedi replied.
Qui-Gon wasn’t sure if the stream of tears escaping from Obi-Wan’s eyes were from pain or if the boy was simply overwhelmed by his emotions. He wished that he could wipe the teen’s tears away, but for the moment, he had to watch his Padawan cry. This was the first time since Obi-Wan’s return that he had held him without any resistance on the young man’s part. It was a small step forward and the Jedi Master fervently clung to the hope stemming from the miniscule victory.
The door opened and Qui-Gon hurriedly exited the lift and made his way down the corridor leading to the healer’s wing. As he entered the waiting area, Alano motioned for Qui-Gon to follow him. Alano palmed open the door and instructed the Jedi to lay Obi-Wan on the bed. Qui-Gon gently deposited his precious cargo and began to explain to the healer what had happened.
If he didn’t know Alano so well, Qui-Gon would have thought that the healer hadn’t heard a word that he had said. While the Jedi had been talking, the healer had been busying himself examining Obi-Wan. Now Qui-Gon had fallen silent and Alano had continued his examination. The teen’s stillness disturbed the Jedi. He knew that Obi-Wan was awake, but the young man remained motionless except for an occasional grimace.
Qui-Gon took Obi-Wan’s hand, a hint of a smile on his lips when the young man didn’t pull away. Another tiny step. He glanced at Alano who was now leaning over Obi-Wan, trying to rouse the young man.
“Ben? It’s Healer Alano. I need you to talk to me.”
“Go ‘way,” Ben hoarsely whispered. “Leave me ‘lone.”
“I will in just a minute, but I need you to talk to me for a minute and tell me what’s wrong.”
“N…no.”
Ignoring Obi-Wan’s protests, the healer pressed on. “I know that you’re in pain and I can take that pain away, but you’re going to have to work with me.”
Obi-Wan swallowed hard, his eyes clenched shut. “M…my head…hu..hurts.”
“Is the pain localized?”
“Huh?”
Qui-Gon chuckled to himself. “Use smaller words,” he suggested to Alano.
Alano nodded. “Ben, does your head hurt in one particular place or all over.”
“All…over.”
“Are you seeing images like you were before?”
Qui-Gon stared at the healer, perplexed by Alano’s question. No one had mentioned anything about images to him, but it was evident that Obi-Wan knew what the healer was talking about.
“No…just…pain…like…knife…in…my…head.”
“Ben, I’m going to give you something for the pain and then I’m going to find out why you are in so much pain,” the healer informed the teen.
The tall Jedi knew that the pain must be unbearable. Obi-Wan had consented to being given medication and was not resisting Alano’s ministrations. Qui-Gon took his other hand and wiped the youth’s tear-stained face. Obi-Wan squeezed his hand as the teen struggled against the waves of torment that continued to assault him.
“That’s it, Ben,” the Jedi Master encouraged. “I’m here.”
He kept up his barrage of encouraging words while the healer prepared to inject the pain medication into Obi-Wan’s arm. Hopefully, the medicine would work and would alleviate the boy’s obvious discomfort. Within just a few seconds, Obi-Wan’s breathing began to even out and his grip on Qui-Gon’s hand relaxed. Qui-Gon saw the teen open his eyes part way and look around.
“Feeling any better?” Qui-Gon asked.
“S…some,” Obi-Wan admitted. “Pain is…almost gone.”
“That’s good. Why don’t you just rest for now? I’ll be here if you need anything.”
Qui-Gon didn’t receive an answer, nor did he truly expect one. Obi-Wan closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep. The Jedi hoped that the teen wouldn’t fight the medication and allow his body to rest. Obi-Wan had been running on pure adrenaline for quite some time and Qui-Gon knew that underneath the façade that the boy hid behind, the teen had to be completely and utterly exhausted.
“He should rest for a while,” Alano stated. “His vitals are stabilizing and he’s no longer in pain. While he’s asleep, I’m going to be running some tests to see if I can figure out what’s going on.”
Qui-Gon nodded his consent. “What were these images that you spoke of?”
The Jedi listened intently as Alano explained what had happened in the quarters and the images that the youth refused to acknowledge. “He was telling me that I left him in the middle of a war,” Qui-Gon recalled. “Do you think that he’s remembering Melida/Daan?”
“Is that something significant?” the healer asked.
“Yes, it was something that happened when Ob…Ben became my Padawan.”
“Then he could be remembering fragments of his past,” Alano mused. “I’m going to do a scan and see if I can rule out a physical reason for his pain.”
“Very well. I’ll stay with him.”
Qui-Gon sat in the chair beside Obi-Wan when Alano left the room. He stared at the now sleeping form of his apprentice. The boy seemed to be at peace, but Qui-Gon knew that was just an apparition. He couldn’t even begin to understand what was going on in Obi-Wan’s mind. The teen was confused, angry, hurt, and scared, and he didn’t know how to deal with all these emotions. If only the youth could remember his Jedi training, then maybe he could release them to the Force, but it was still obvious that Obi-Wan wanted nothing to do with the Jedi except for being responsible for their destruction.
“You won’t feel that way forever, my Padawan.” Qui-Gon spoke softly, not taking a chance on disturbing the slumbering teen. “Soon, you will remember everything and take your place at my side.”
The Jedi leaned back and closed his eyes. There were still things that he needed to do, but right now, he couldn’t leave Obi-Wan’s side. Whether the youth realized it or not, he had reached out to Qui-Gon and the Jedi was determined not to let that fact simply vanish as if it were a vapor. He welcomed the Force as it flowed through his weary body, giving him the strength that he would need to continue to help Obi-Wan. Before allowing sleep to claim him, he took Obi-Wan’s hand again and held it. Qui-Gon knew that now when he slept, that he would be able to conquer the demons that plagued his dreams.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cordo Mangan had grown tired of waiting for Adi Gallia to contact him, so he decided that he would venture back to the Jedi Temple and speak with her in person. His mind had been contemplating how he was going to reach Warden Dernal once he gained access to the Temple, but he forced these thoughts to the back of his mind for now. He first had to convince the Jedi that he could help.
He sauntered up the steps, knowing that a Jedi would stop him before he even reached the top of the stairwell. The pilot was right, but unfortunately it wasn’t a mere Knight or Padawan. It was none other than Mace Windu himself. Ca’li had always liked Master Windu stating that he was one of the fairest individuals that he had encountered. Cordo decided that he would reserve his judgment on the Councilor.
“May I help you?” Master Windu inquired.
“I’d like to speak with Master Gallia,” the smuggler politely requested.
“Master Gallia is indisposed at the moment. Can I be of assistance?”
“How about Master Jinn? Is he indisposed?”
“Yes, he is,” Mace pointedly answered. “Now, I repeat, may I help you?”
“I’m the pilot who flew them to rescue those kids,” Cordo said. “I just need to talk to one of them about that boy.”
“Obi-Wan?”
“Yeah, I guess that’s his name.”
“We appreciate the help that you’ve given Master Gallia and Master Jinn, but I’m not sure what other assistance that you could provide to them or to Padawan Kenobi.”
“I’m not sure either, but I watched my brother go through something very similar and I thought I could help.”
“Your brother?”
“Yes! Now, are you going to let me in to talk to them or not?” Cordo’s patience was beginning to wear thin. Every minute that he wasted talking to this Jedi, was time lost that he could be searching for Dernal.
“Mister…”
“Mangan. Cordo Mangan.”
“Mister Mangan, I sense that you have an ulterior motive in wanting to help Padawan Kenobi. What is it?”
“Ca’li was right. You certainly don’t pull any punches, do you?”
“Ca’li? Was that your brother?”
Cordo’s eyes narrowed. “How quickly you forget one of your own, Master Windu. Or is the fact that he took his own life that you’re trying to forget?”
Mace’s hardened gaze softened and fell to the ground. The pilot waited patiently for the Jedi Master to answer his challenge. He wondered if his brother’s death actually meant something to the Jedi Order or did they see him as an embarrassment because he died by his own hand?
“Knight Ca’li Mangan,” the Councilor finally whispered. “I should have made the connection sooner. You favor him, quite a bit.”
“So I’ve been told.”
“I remember Ca’li well. He was a very promising young Jedi and then…”
“Then he went to find his wayward brother who had ended up in a prison on Kessel. I guess the lessons about not forming attachments didn’t take with Ca’li,” Cordo growled.
“He cared for you deeply,” Mace stated.
“I know,” the pilot sighed. “I guess I thought that maybe I could spare Kenobi from going through what Ca’li went through.”
Master Windu nodded. “I will see if Master Gallia or Master Jinn is available to speak with you. In the meantime, I would like to know more about what happened to your brother. We need to know what to expect from Padawan Kenobi and if your offer of help is genuine, I’m sure that you would be more than willing to answer a few questions.”
“Of course, Master Windu,” Cordo congenially replied. “I’d be happy to.”
He followed the Jedi into the Temple and was taken to a room set aside for guests of the Temple. “Make yourself comfortable, Mr. Mangan. I will send a Padawan in to bring you some refreshment while you wait.”
“Thank you.” Cordo sat down and looked around the room. He sighed in deep satisfaction, knowing that he was one step closer to his target. If he had to talk to Jinn to get to Dernal, so be it.
He nodded as the Padawan entered the room with a tray carrying a pitcher of water and a selection of fruit. As he took the offered glass, Master Windu returned.
“Adi and Qui-Gon are both in the healer’s wing with their Padawans. They will be down as soon as they can. In the meantime, you can start by telling me what happened to your brother,” the Jedi urged.
The pilot didn’t like bringing up the past, but again, if he had to relive the past to exact his revenge, he would do it. He began to tell Mace about what happened to Ca’li during his time at Kessel. The more he spoke of the past, the more difficult it was to keep his anger under control. He could not let this Jedi Councilor realize his true motive for being here or he would never fulfill his life’s purpose of revenge.
Alano rushed back into the room where Qui-Gon sat with the still sleeping Obi-Wan Kenobi. He had just finished his last test and had discovered something very peculiar in the young man’s brain. His rushed entrance had startled the Jedi Master from his nap.
“I think I’ve got something!” the healer exclaimed.
Qui-Gon sat up immediately. “What is it?”
Alano handed the data pad to the Jedi Master to let him read the healer’s findings for himself as he quickly explained his discovery. “There is something implanted inside his brain. I’m not sure what it is, but it could be what’s affecting his memory and causing him pain. Did Dernal say anything about an implant or something to that nature?”
The Jedi Master shook his head. “No, he left that detail out,” Qui-Gon sarcastically replied. He looked up from the data pad and studied the healer. “So, what do we do next?”
The healer nervously licked his lips. He wasn’t sure how Qui-Gon was going to react to his suggestion. What he was about to propose would be risky with the potential of being fatal, but Alano knew that there were really no alternatives. Taking a deep breath, the healer looked the Jedi in the eyes and answered with confidence. “I think we need to remove it…”
I think Alano may be right; the chip needs to be removed. I just hope Cordo's story confirms that fact.
Another step closer....
Congratulations on your noms! You are a very talented author and they are very much deserved!
Great post!
Phew, at least the youngling is ok.
And Cordo is telling them about what happened to his brother... this should be useful.
Hmmm, a chip in Obi's head? This can't be anything good. I hope they can get it out safely, and that removing it doesn't make things worse....
Well done and looking forward to more!
Is God willing to prevent evil but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God. -Epicurus
