Wonder why the warden has such a vendetta against the Jedi...? That could be an interesting, potentially tragic story....

You're right. The story behind Cordo and the Warden is tragic. More will be revealed in future posts.
Vivid_Scripts:
The Warden will do his best to weasel his way out of this mess. But of course, he has neve come up against the determination of Qui-Gon Jinn.
Happy Monday to you all. I hope everyone had a nice weekend and if anyone has seen the sunshine, please send it this way! Here's the next post and I hope you enjoy it. Thank you for reading.
Part 20
Ben paced around the room, making sure to keep his distance from the despised Jedi. His hands were still bound but he figured that he couldn’t do anything about that at the moment. He just knew that somehow he had to get away from the Temple before the Jedi finished destroying him. They had almost succeeded once and he was not about to give them the opportunity to hurt him again. The rage burning inside him was causing his head to pound. Hate was consuming him to the point that he would soon know nothing else.
“Would you like something to eat or drink?”
The teen stopped in his tracks and glared at Qui-Gon Jinn. He would accept nothing from this man even though he had to admit that he was hungry. The only thing Ben wanted from the Jedi was to see them all dead, preferably by his own hand.
“I don’t want anything from you,” Ben muttered in disgust.
“You have to eat,” the Jedi urged. “I’m sure that you’re hungry.”
“I’m fine. I don’t want any of your poison.”
“If you change your mind, I’ll be glad to get you something. Would you like to rest?”
Ben laughed. “And give you an opportunity to drug me or something worse?”
“I’m not going to hurt you,” Qui-Gon gently stated.
“Don’t lie. You’re the one who tried to drug me earlier. I don’t forget things easily.”
“I would have to disagree with that.”
“What do you mean?” the young man demanded to know.
“Evidently you have forgotten everything you ever learned as a Jedi Padawan.”
Ben clenched his fists, ignoring the pain in his bandaged hand. How dare this monster bring up those forbidden memories! The teen had diligently worked to lock those memories away and this son of a Sith wanted to dredge up the past. He would not allow this piece of filth to taunt him. Ben resumed his path, blocking out the Jedi Master’s constant babbling.
“Ben, you must try and remember your life here at the Temple,” the Jedi stated. “You were a bright young Padawan with a promising future as Jedi.”
“The only future the Jedi have is one of destruction,” Ben spat.
“Ben…”
“Enough of your lies!” the boy screamed. “I can’t stand to hear your voice any longer.”
“That’s too bad. You and I are going to be spending a lot of time together. We might as well make the best out of a difficult situation.”
“Never,” Ben murmured as he continued pacing. This Jedi was absolutely infuriating. How he wished that he could have taken care of him back on Kessel, but that didn’t happen. Instead, he was once again a prisoner of the very beings that he hated. Ben was not going to make this easy on the Jedi. He would fight them with everything he had.
He had to think, but right now his throbbing head was preventing him from doing so. It was taking all his concentration to simply remain on his feet. Ben could not allow himself to succumb to his physical needs. He had to remain strong. The teen was well aware of the fact that it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up his energy.
Ben cursed as he stumbled and fell to the floor. He was unable to completely break his fall due to his hands being bound. The youth quickly tried to get to his feet, but got tangled with the legs of the end table. Ben felt a pair of strong hands start to lift him up.
Pulling out of the Jedi Master’s grip, Ben growled, “I don’t need your help!”
“Again, I would have to disagree,” Qui-Gon calmly replied.
“Get away from me!”
“I was just trying to help you,” the Jedi quietly offered.
“How many times do I have to say it? I don’t want your help! Get away from me!”
Ben finally managed to stand to his feet and began his rampant pacing again. He did not want the loathsome Jedi to touch him. He lengthened his stride in an effort to get away from the Jedi.
“I’ve got to get out of here. I can’t stand it any longer!” Ben sharply exclaimed.
He didn’t pay heed to Jinn’s response. Ben didn’t want to listen. He wanted to escape and that was now his priority. The teen was so involved in his thoughts that he didn’t hear the door chime and was startled when he realized that he and Qui-Gon were no longer alone. He cautiously peered at the two Jedi who were talking in hushed tones.
“Whatever you have to say about me can be said to my face,” the young man blurted.
The teen took a step back as the Jedi approached him. He was not going to let them get near him; Ben knew what would happen and he was not about to let either of these repugnant Jedi touch him. He saw the long haired Master hold his hand up, silently motioning the other Jedi to stay back.
“Ben,” Qui-Gon began. “This is Master Healer Alano. He needs to examine you and be sure that you’re all right.”
“I don’t think so,” the youth challenged. “I’m not stupid.”
“No, you’re not,” the healer agreed. “I would say by the looks of you that you’re a very intelligent and cunning young man.”
“I don’t recall asking for your opinion,” Ben scowled.
“No, but you got it,” Alano stated. “Now, why don’t you prove how smart you are and let me take a look at you.”
“No.”
“If you intend on fulfilling your personal vendetta against the Jedi, you’re going to need your strength,” the Master Healer pointed out.
“Are you in a hurry to die?”
“Not particularly.”
“Could have fooled me.”
“Some of those bruises look pretty painful,” Alano observed.
“I’ve had worse.”
“I can imagine. Why don’t you let me look at them?”
Ben grinned at the Master Healer and at Qui-Gon Jinn. The one called Alano had a point. The young man was going to need his strength and it was waning fast, but he would not let the two Jedi see it.
“I don’t think so. You’re just waiting to get close enough to pump me full of drugs. That’s not going to happen,” assured the boy.
“I wouldn’t do that.”
“More lies. You Jedi are sure good at sugar coating the truth. I’m an enemy of the Jedi. Don’t you think I know what they want to do to me?”
Ben couldn’t disguise the astonishment on his face as the Master Healer sat down in the nearest chair and stared at the boy. This man’s harsh glare made the teen slightly nervous, but again, he was not about to let those emotions show through the wall that he had built around himself.
“What are you doing?” Ben asked, his curiosity piqued.
“I’m waiting you out,” Alano informed the boy. “I figure that within the next two hours that you’ll collapse from sheer exhaustion and then you will have no say in the matter.”
“Like I have a say in anything!” Ben muttered.
“You would have more of a say if you demonstrated a little cooperation.”
“Forget it. If the Jedi want me, they’ll have to kill me.”
“A bit drastic don’t you think?”
“Not really. I…”
The pain that shot through Ben’s head drove him to his knees. His body began to twitch uncontrollably and he fought against the tremors that plagued all his extremities. Ben could feel a dribble of spittle running down his chin as he was eased down on the floor. He heard the healer call for Qui-Gon to help him. Ben couldn’t fight against the two Jedi, not like this.
He could hear the two Jedi hovering over him, talking in hushed tones.
“It’s some kind of seizure,” the healer announced. “Give me my bag.”
Ben was fast losing the battle for consciousness. He felt a familiar prick in his neck and immediately his tremors began to cease. The teen lay on the floor spent, unable to resist the effects of the sedative. As he closed his eyes, he whispered so that the healer had to strain to hear
“Stinking Jedi…hate you.”
As he drifted off, he never felt the strong arms of Qui-Gon Jinn lift him off the floor and carry him to the bedroom. Ben wondered if he would wake up or if the Jedi would simply go ahead and kill him just to get him out of the way. It had been a long time since Ben had felt fear and as he fell sound asleep, he silently acknowledged that he was terrified.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Qui-Gon watched with interest as Healer Alano examined Obi-Wan. Qui-Gon had tried to stay out of the healer’s way, but he had constantly found himself right beside Alano. Questions were racing through the Jedi Master’s mind, especially since the teen’s seizure. He realized that his impatience was evident to Alano, but it did not spur the Master Healer to move any faster. Qui-Gon was actually relieved when Master Alano had shown up at his door. The healer was direct and was considered to be aloof, which tended to intimidate many, but Qui-Gon had always liked the man.
After about a half hour later, the Jedi could tell that the Healer was done as Alano motioned for Qui-Gon to join him. The two stepped out into the common area, letting the door close behind him. The Jedi Master was wary about leaving Obi-Wan alone for long because of the boy’s ability to fight the effects of sedation, but he noted that Alano appeared to be all right in leaving the youth for a few minutes.
“Well?” Qui-Gon asked, his steely gaze fixed on the healer.
“Overall, it’s not as bad as I expected,” Alano admitted. “He does have some significant bruising, especially on his arms and hands, but that should heal without any problems. It does seem that over the past year, Obi-Wan has had a few broken ribs, but they have healed as well. I rewrapped his hand and if you keep the bacta bandages on them, then there shouldn’t be any problems. He is showing some signs of malnourishment, but nothing that can’t be resolved with a few square meals.”
“If he’ll eat,” Qui-Gon mumbled. “So far, I haven’t been able to get him to drink or eat anything.”
“If he refuses, I’ll admit him and feed him intravenously. You can give him that option when he wakes up.”
“What about the seizure?”
“I’m not sure what caused it. I’d like to do some more tests, but I doubt that he’ll agree to them.”
“No, but I am his Master,” he reminded the healer.
“And you think that he’s going to do anything that you ask him?” Alano sniggered. “Forgive me Qui-Gon for what I’m about to say, but the boy can’t stand you.”
“I’m well aware of that, but he hasn’t tried to kill me since we’ve been back. I think that can be considered an improvement.”
“A small victory, perhaps,” the healer agreed. “But that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down. Underneath all that false bravado, there’s a frightened child who no longer can determine what his true reality is. We’ve got to figure out how to convince him that he is Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padawan of Master Qui-Gon Jinn.
“Tell me, have you spoken with Padawan Tachi? Do you think she could provide us with any more information?”
“It’s possible, but I haven’t had the chance to talk to her.”
“Why don’t you go ahead and do that?”
Qui-Gon averted his eyes towards the bedroom door. While the apprentice had been gone, his bedroom had almost become a shrine and now Qui-Gon felt as if he had desecrated it by allowing the boy to sleep in there.
Shaking his head, the Jedi quietly said, “I can’t leave him alone.”
“I’ll stay with him,” Alano said.
“You don’t know what you’re in for,” Qui-Gon warned the healer.
“I think he’ll stay asleep this time. I gave him a sedative powerful enough to put a gundark out for a week.”
“He can fight a sleep suggestion and sedative. Don’t be surprised if he comes around sooner than you expect.”
“We’ll be fine. Now go,” Alano instructed. “I’ll call you if I need you.”
Qui-Gon nodded as he slipped on his robe that he had discarded earlier. “I’ll try not to be too long.”
The Jedi Master left his quarters to go and see if he could speak with Siri. Calling upon the Force, he released the tension that had taken over every muscle in his body. Guilt ate away at Qui-Gon as he realized that he was relieved to be away from Obi-Wan. The young man’s behavior tended to alternate from a frantic state of mind to being insolent and demanding. He wanted to help Obi-Wan, but had no idea where to begin. Maybe after he spoke with Siri, he would at least know what happened to his apprentice. But then again, Qui-Gon wasn’t sure he was ready to know the truth.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Siri nodded her thanks as one of the Padawans in the healing wing brought her a tray of food. Taking off the lid, she savored the aroma of the stew as she picked up her spoon.
“I don’t think that I’ll ever complain about the food in the cafeteria again,” she said as she took a bite of the stew.
“Well, after you’re feeling better, I’m going to take you out for a night on the town,” Adi promised. “You can even pick the place you want to eat.”
“Even Dex’s?”
She grinned as Adi rolled her eyes. “Yes, even Dex’s; although I don’t know what you see in that place. The food’s greasy, it’s not healthy…”
“But it’s so good,” Siri countered.
“If you say so.”
“I do. Obi and I used to…”
Siri dropped her eyes and laid down her spoon. It seemed that somehow every thought she had would somehow end up centering on Obi-Wan. Even after all he had done to her, she couldn’t find it in herself to be angry with him. She continued to tell herself that this wasn’t her Obi. The young man known as Ben was a creation by another depraved man who took great pleasure in hurting people.
She looked up as Adi gently squeezed her hand. “You need to eat, so you can regain your strength,” the Master urged. “Then after the bone knitter is through, I’ll help you clean up. I’m sure that a nice hot shower will help put things in perspective.”
“Maybe you’re right,” Siri reluctantly agreed, not wanting to upset her Master. She had truly missed Adi and Siri did not want to waste one moment of their time together dwelling on things that she could not change.
Siri finished her meal in silence. After Adi had removed the tray, the young girl leaned back against her pillow, struggling to keep her eyes open. After the healers had left her and Adi alone, the girl began to realize how deep her exhaustion ran. She wanted to sleep, but once again, her thoughts turned to Obi-Wan.
She had almost started to doze when she heard the door to her room open. Lifting her head, she immediately recognized Qui-Gon Jinn as he entered the room. She watched with interest as Adi and Master Jinn began to talk quietly amongst themselves. Siri could tell that her Master did not approve of what the other Master was saying.
The young girl knew that she probably shouldn’t interrupt the two Jedi, but she also had a feeling that if she didn’t, the two of them would stand there and argue the rest of the day.
“Master Jinn,” she called out. “How’s Obi-Wan?”
Siri never appreciated how tall the Jedi Master was until he started walking towards her. He moved with a sophistication and grace that was unexpected of someone of his stature.
“He is finally asleep. Healer Alano is with him,” Qui-Gon said. “How are you feeling, young one?”
“I’m tired, but once my arm heals, I’ll be as good as new,” Siri replied.
“That’s good to hear.”
“Thank you for your concern, Master Jinn.”
She couldn’t help but observe that the elder Jedi almost seemed nervous. It was obvious that he wanted to talk with her, but wasn’t sure where to begin. Siri knew that the time would come when she would have to answer a lot of questions, not just from Master Jinn, but from the Council as well.
“Is there something you needed, Master Jinn?” the girl finally inquired.
“Yes, Padawan Tachi. May I sit down?”
“Of course.”
Siri saw Master Jinn glance back over his shoulder at her Master. The girl was familiar with the stern gaze of her Master and wondered if Qui-Gon was as intimidated by it as she was.
“I was wondering if you felt up to answering a few questions for me,” Qui-Gon requested.
“I’ll do my best.”
The young girl smiled at her Master, indicating that she was fine and wanted to do this. She reached out her good hand and took Adi’s hand into her own, hoping that her Master knew that she would do all she could to help Obi-Wan.
Siri breathed a sigh a relief as her Master sat down beside her, reaching out to the girl through their bond.
//If I think it is too much for you, I will end it. Do you understand, my Padawan?//
//Yes, Master. I will be fine. I want to do this. I need to do this.//
The teen focused all her attention on Master Jinn. This was not going to be easy and there was a lot that she didn’t know, but she would tell him all that she knew. Siri knew that if their roles were reversed, Obi-Wan would do everything in his power to save her. With her Master by her side, she swallowed nervously.
“Master Jinn, what do you want to know?”

I am sure the author jedidas3 has something up her sleeve to bring
Obi-Wan back to sanity.
Taunting us with horribly images of poor Obi-wan having
seizures and hating everyone.
Were you a sith in another life
I hope Siri can shed some light on what to do for Obi.
Although my offer of running Darnel through with my lightsabre
still stands.
Ummm! I sound like a sith don't I
Excellent post as usual

What a nice gift after the drudge of a Monday!
I like this healer. He's taken Obi's hatred of the Jedi seemingly without judgment, and is dealing with him rather well, in my opinion.
Now these seizures are more worrying. Are they something that is going to help get through his brainwashing, or are they further signs of the damage Obi has endured?
I hope Siri can give Qui enough information to help Obi.
Excellent post!!

Oh dear, what's wrong with Obi-Wan? That seizure can't be a good thing.
I like that healer too, I just hope he's paying close attention so Obi-Wan doesn't escape!
This made me really sad for some reason-
Qui-Gon averted his eyes towards the bedroom door. While the apprentice had been gone, his bedroom had almost become a shrine and now Qui-Gon felt as if he had desecrated it by allowing the boy to sleep in there.
Poor Qui-Gon, not getting the happy home-coming he was hoping for all this time.
I hope Siri can give Qui some useful answers. What did they do with the warden, I wonder?
Thanks for the wonderful update,
jedidas
! It's the perfect thing to start the week off right.

as for Obi-Wan's seizure... I get the feeling it might be something the warden programmed into him if he doesn't get his "treatments", but that's just my theory...

I'd hate to see the Jedi have to go to the warden again.

Poor Obi-Wan.
I like the healer; he's no nonsense and straight forward. He also appears to have Obi-Wan's best interests at heart. Does he yet know that this alternate personality is the 'jedi killer'? Hopefully they will find a way to bring Obi-Wan back.
Even if it's just a little at a time and perhaps in unconciousness ways that maybe even Ben doesn't realize.
Wonderful job with this.

“If you intend on fulfilling your personal vendetta against the Jedi, you’re going to need your strength,” the Master Healer pointed out.
Smart, using reverse psychology on him. Probably about the only thing that will work.
“I’m waiting you out,” Alano informed the boy. “I figure that within the next two hours that you’ll collapse from sheer exhaustion and then you will have no say in the matter.”
Very good point.

RE: Remembrance (JA: Obi, Qui, Siri, AU) Updated 5/12!

The healer will have a lot of tricks up his sleeve. As you will see in the next post, he doesn't tolerate Obi's behavior and is very direct in how he handles Obi.
Wonderful job with this.
Thank you, my friend.
Ferus-Olin:
Amazing story! Finally caught up, Actually found myself thinking about this story today at work haha. At any rate if your still running a PM list, could you add me. Ready for more!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it. I think about stories at work too...it makes the day go faster!
I'd be happy to add you to the PM list. Thank you for asking!
LilyHobbitJedi:
Smart, using reverse psychology on him. Probably about the only thing that will work.
The healer is really good at that...I think that the more you find out about the healer, the more you'll like him.
Thank you so much for reading and for your kind words!

The next post is up. I hope you enjoy it! Thank you all so much for your support and encouragement. Now, I'm off to work on "Intentions" and "The Past Revisited."
Part 21
Qui-Gon admired the young girl’s willingness to help, despite the uneasiness that surrounded her. It was apparent that she cared deeply for his apprentice and desperately wanted to do something for Obi-Wan. He pulled up another chair and sat down opposite of Master Gallia, unsure of even where to begin. Qui-Gon realized that whatever had happened to turn Obi-Wan into a murderer would have to have been horrendous. He wasn’t certain if he was prepared to hear what Siri had to say, but the Jedi knew that he had no choice. Taking a deep breath, the Master began with his questions.
“How long has he been like this?”
“Almost the entire time,” Siri replied. “When we were first captured, we were put in a cell that was completely dark. We were both bound and we had force suppression collars around our neck. If we tried to remove them, jolts of electricity would shoot through our bodies. It didn’t take us long to realize that it was useless to try and get them off. I’m not sure how long we were in that cell before we ever saw anybody; it was least two or three days.
“The Warden came in and told us that we had been found guilty and would be serving three years in his prison. He didn’t even tell us what we had been accused of. I figured out later that our crime was being Jedi.”
“Then what happened?” Qui-Gon pressed.
“Warden Dernal motioned for his guards to take me, but Obi-Wan jumped up and blocked their path. They started hitting him and kicking him but he still fought. One of the guards finally knocked him unconscious. Dernal just stared at him for the longest time and then told the guards to take him to what he called the treatment room. Then Dernal took me to another cell and told me that I was lucky.”
“What did he mean?”
“The Warden said that he initially thought about using me for his experiment, figuring that I would be easy to break. Dernal decided after watching Obi-Wan fight the guards, that he would prefer a challenge, especially when he discovered that Obi-Wan was your Padawan.”
“How did he know Obi-Wan was my Padawan?”
Qui-Gon felt the young girl’s sorrow as she dropped her head, hiding her eyes from the Jedi Master.
“I blurted it out without even thinking. I was trying to be brave and told the Warden that our Masters would be searching for us. He asked who our Masters were and I told him. I mean, you both are known throughout the galaxy, so I figured that he would have heard of you. Unfortunately, he knew exactly who you were.”
“I see.”
“I’m sorry,” Siri whispered.
“It’s not your fault,” he assured the girl. “I probably would have done the same thing.”
“No,” Siri disagreed. “You wouldn’t have been scared.”
Qui-Gon reached out and gently lifted Siri’s chin until she met his concerned gaze. “That’s where you’re wrong, young one. Jedi Masters do get scared. I promise you that the entire time you and Obi-Wan were missing, your Master and I were terrified. Fortunately, we had the Force to release our fears to; you did not. The only source of comfort that either of you had was taken away.”
“I know that, but…”
“No buts. You did what you were supposed to do. You survived until Master Gallia and I found you. You should have no regrets.”
“Yes, I do.”
“And what would that be?”
“That I couldn’t help Obi-Wan.”
“But you did. He’s alive and he’s here because of you. Do you understand me? I am indebted to you for helping him and being there for him. It must have been so difficult for you.”
He gave Siri a few moments to center herself. She graced him with a brief nod, indicating that she was ready to proceed. He didn’t want the Padawan to continually punish herself over something that she had no control over. Qui-Gon was already bearing that burden.
“I didn’t see Obi-Wan for several days after that,” she continued. “I was in another cell and the only time I saw anybody was when the guards brought food or water. I would ask about Obi-Wan and they would just laugh.” Siri swallowed. “I was so afraid that he was dead.
“When they brought him back, he was so sick. He kept complaining of his head hurting and he just laid on the floor with his head on my lap. He couldn’t even stand to open his eyes. I couldn’t get him to eat and he barely drank anything. He was like this for about two days. When he finally was able to sit up, he didn’t remember me.”
The Jedi Master saw the young girl close her eyes against the images that were replaying in her mind. He could easily sense her sadness as she unwillingly relived the past.
“I told him my name and then he asked me his name,” Siri quietly said. “I thought my heart was going to break in two. I told him that his name was Obi-Wan and…”
Qui-Gon’s eyes hardened. “And what?”
“I don’t know what happened to him. He began to scream and grabbed his head. He yelled at me not to call him that and then he started ranting and I couldn’t make sense of what he was saying. The only words I could make out was the occasional ‘no’ and ‘Jedi’. I knew that I had to get him to calm down and so I just started just quietly talking to him and trying to tell him that everything was all right. After a while, he stopped talking and just simply looked at me. It was then he told me his name was Ben. So, that’s what I called him.”
“During the next few days, he started talking about the Jedi and how much he hated them for what they did to him, but then our conversations turned to other things. Then a couple days later, the Warden returned and told Obi-Wan that he had captured a Jedi and had scheduled a fight to the death.
“Obi-Wan didn’t want to kill anybody. It was then that Dernal told him that he would be fighting a Jedi Knight. I saw the fire burning in his eyes, but he was still hesitant. The Warden then told Obi-Wan that if he didn’t fight and win that I would die. So, he fought and he won.”
“So, he resisted the first time,” Qui-Gon clarified, feeling a glimmer of hope.
“The first two or three times actually, but then Dernal always used me against him. The guards would usually take him away a few hours before the fights began and then when he came back, he was so exhausted. Usually after that, Dernal would give Obi-Wan another treatment.”
“What were these…treatments?”
“I don’t know. Every time Obi-Wan came back, I could see the anger and the rage he felt towards the Jedi eating him alive. He started talking about how he wanted to kill all the Jedi for what they did to him.”
“Did he ever say what it was that we supposedly did to him?” the Jedi asked.
“I know that he thinks that the Jedi murdered his parents after they took him away. He also believes that as a Padawan that he was treated rather…harshly. Obi-Wan never gave details or wanted to talk about it much. It got to the point that I didn’t press him.”
Qui-Gon sighed. He didn’t think that he could feel any more helpless than he already felt. He was wrong. There truly seemed to be no hope.
“Was Obi-Wan the only one who would fight the Jedi prisoners?” the Jedi softly asked.
“Yes,” the young girl nodded. “People paid a lot of money to watch these fights. Whenever he fought, his collar was deactivated and he was allowed to draw his strength from the dark side. After the fight, the collar would be reactivated and Obi-Wan would just collapse. Sometimes he would get sick, but after a day or two, he was all right again.”
“Are you certain that Obi-Wan was the only one that…”
“Master Jinn, I saw him kill Master Turim. He would come back with the blood on his hands. When he was asleep, I would try and clean it, but it got to the point where I couldn’t get it all off. Have you paid close attention to his hands? They’re stained with blood!” Siri exclaimed. “The sad part of it is that sometimes he never remembered fighting, but he always hoped that he had killed a Jedi.”
Qui-Gon knew Siri was right. He thought back to when he was cleaning Obi-Wan’s injured hand, there was blood that would not come off. The Jedi had not wanted to admit that the blood on his Padawan’s hands belonged to the slain Jedi. Obi-Wan would always carry their blood with him.
Purging these thoughts from his mind, he sighed deeply. Qui-Gon needed answers that Siri could not provide. He needed to know what these treatments involved and what kind of lasting effects they would have on his apprentice. There was only one person who could answer this, and right now, Warden Dernal had seemed to develop a problem with his memory.
“I have one more question, if you don’t mind.”
“Not at all, Master Jinn,” Siri said.
“Did Obi-Wan ever have any kind of seizure during the time that you were with him?”
“Only once,” Siri recalled. “He just started shaking and grabbing his head. The guards came rushing in the cell and took him away. One of them said something about Dernal being furious, but I’m not sure why. I’m sorry.”
Qui-Gon patted the young girl’s hand. “You’ve nothing to be sorry for. You’ve been a tremendous help.”
“I wish I could do more.”
“The best thing you can do is concentrate on getting your strength back and resuming your place by your Master’s side.”
The Jedi rose from his seat and nodded his thanks to Siri and her Master. “Thank you for your time. May the Force be with you.”
“And with you,” Master Gallia answered.
Qui-Gon left the Master and Padawan to continue their reunion as he tried to once again quell the twinge of jealously that crept upon him. It was becoming harder for the Jedi to believe that his own relationship with his Padawan was ever going to be the same. Right now, the young man despised him, and Qui-Gon’s own doubts about the boy were beginning to surface.
The Jedi Master shook his head, clearing his mind of the constant negative thoughts that plagued him. “There has to be something I’m missing.”
Frustrated, Qui-Gon jabbed the button to summon the lift. He was well aware of the fact that it would be difficult to get the Warden to tell him the truth, but he had to try. He decided that he was not above a little manipulation of the Force to get the answers that he needed. The Jedi Master would not have normally resorted to such a tactic, but the entire situation was spiraling out of control and Qui-Gon was quickly running out of options.
The door to the lift opened and the tall Jedi nearly plowed into Master Yoda. He was hoping to avoid the ancient Master for a while longer, but it appeared that the fates had conspired against him.
“Looking for you I have been,” Yoda stated, hint of mild annoyance present in his weary voice. “Talk we must.”
“Do we have to do this now?” Qui-Gon wanted to know. “There’s something I need to do.”
“The Warden is not going anywhere.”
“How did you…never mind.” Qui-Gon stepped into the lift and stood beside his mentor. “I have several questions that I need to ask him.”
“I’m sure you do,” the tiny Jedi agreed, “but wait Dernal can.”
“I beg to differ,” Qui-Gon softly countered. “Obi-Wan is running out of time as well. I’m well aware of what his future will be if I don’t find a way to get through to him.”
“A decision will not be made today. To the Room of a Thousand Fountains we will go. Calm your mind you must.”
Qui-Gon’s cool gaze met Master Yoda’s serene eyes, knowing that the elder Jedi easily sensed his irritation. “Fifteen minutes and then I’m going to see Dernal.”
“Fair enough,” Yoda smiled as Qui-Gon punched in their new destination.
The two Jedi rode in silence. Qui-Gon couldn’t help but feel that he was losing precious time. Dernal had to have the answers he was looking for and this delay was simply prohibiting the Jedi Master to finding out what exactly had been done to his apprentice. Glancing at his chrono, he wondered how Alano was faring with Obi-Wan. The healer had been confident that the youth would be asleep for quite a while, but Qui-Gon had his doubts. Obi-Wan had been able to fight off Force-induced sleep suggestions; a strong sedative would be nothing to the boy.
Qui-Gon pinched the bridge of his nose, fighting his own fatigue. He needed to meditate and gather his strength, but there wasn’t time for that either. The lift stopped on the floor and he and Master Yoda made their way to the Room of a Thousand Fountains. As he walked through the entrance way, he immediately allowed the Living Force to surround him. Taking a deep breath, he embraced the warmth and the comfort that the Force was bestowing upon him.
Walking a little bit further into the gardens, Qui-Gon came to a bench and sat down. Yoda climbed upon the seat beside him and patiently waited for the Jedi to speak. Qui-Gon didn’t feel like talking to the wizened Jedi just yet, so he stared ahead, hoping that Yoda would simply be satisfied to let him have this moment to himself.
“Ready to listen I am,” Yoda finally said, breaking the silence.
Qui-Gon continued to look straight ahead. “I’m not ready to talk,” Qui-Gon softly answered.
“Then sit here we will until you are ready.”
The Jedi Master knew that Yoda would not leave until the tiny Master had received the answers he was seeking. Why couldn’t the senior Jedi understand that he wasn’t ready to talk? All that mattered was Obi-Wan and by sitting here, he was wasting time that could be spent in helping his apprentice.
“The boy can not be helped, until you have helped yourself,” Yoda remarked.
Qui-Gon was confused. “Helped myself?”
“You must help yourself by accepting what has happened to the apprentice. You must accept that it is not your fault.”
“I never said it was.”
“Sense the guilt that lies within you I can. Release it you must.”
The graying Jedi clenched his jaw. “I can’t. Not right now.”
“Then destroy you it will and then what will happen to Obi-Wan?”
Qui-Gon closed his eyes. Yoda had no idea what he was asking of him. Of course it was his fault that Obi-Wan ended up like this. If he had trained Obi-Wan better, if he had been more focused on his apprentice, then just maybe the teen could have resisted. Yes, it was his fault and nobody could persuade him to believe anything else.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ben stood panting; sweat pouring in his eyes as he stood over his latest conquest. He had just slain another Jedi. The galaxy was rid of one more stinking Jedi that would no longer be able to take children from their families and torment them. His opponent was lying face down in the dirt, blood oozing from multiple wounds. Ben kneeled down and turned over the lifeless body.
The teen’s eyes widened in fear and astonishment as he stared into his own dead eyes. The Jedi that he had just killed looked just like him. The cleft in the chin, the tiny mole on his cheek, the piercing blue eyes all belonged to him. Ben stepped back away from the corpse as he dropped his blade in the dirt. How was this possible?
The young man turned and started running into the darkness. He couldn’t see where he was going, but it didn’t matter; he had to get away from the memory of his likeness that lay on the hard ground. He suddenly stopped as he realized that he didn’t know where to go. There was no end to the blackness and panic was starting to consume him. He had to find a light source somewhere.
Ben’s eyes darted back and forth trying to get use to the dark shadows that seemed to surround him. His body tensed as he felt someone quietly trying to sneak up on him. He silently cursed when he remembered that he had dropped his knife. As the adversary drew closer, he could see a faint light surrounding his enemy. Squinting, he could make out the form of a Jedi. Suddenly he was surrounded by Jedi, the faces of whom he recognized. He had killed them all and now they were here to exact their revenge.
As the arms of the Jedi reached out to him, Ben opened his mouth to scream, but nothing came out. He felt himself grow weaker as the Jedi began to touch him. The youth fell to his knees and placed his hands over his ears. He was afraid to hear what they were saying. He was certain that he was going to die and that he was going to perish at the hands of ghosts.
“No!” Ben sat up in bed, a sheen of perspiration on his brow. He could not stop shaking as he glanced about the room. His eyes met those of the Master Healer Alano, who was now standing beside him, his expression a mixture of concern and bewilderment.
“Are you all right?” the healer asked.
Ben couldn’t find his voice. He wrapped his arms around his waist and closed his eyes, willing the images that were haunting him to go away and never return. But he knew they would return; they always did, especially in his dreams. He would have to be careful and make sure that he wasn’t sedated again. If he didn’t sleep, he didn’t dream.
“Ben, are you all right?” the healer repeated.
“Leave me alone,” the youth tersely replied. “Just leave me alone.”
“I can’t do that, Ben. I’m a healer and if I thought that you were hurting or sick and I didn’t help you, I would not be fulfilling my sworn oath…”
“I don’t give a damn about your oath. Leave me alone!”
“So, are you hungry yet?” Alano inquired, nonplussed by the young man’s outburst.
“I told you that I’m not eating any of your garbage.”
“I know that, but I thought that you would prefer to eat something willingly than intravenously,” the healer offered.
“I’m not taking it either way.”
“Very well.” Alano pulled out his personal comm unit to place a call to the healer’s wing.
“What are you doing?” the teen growled.
“I’m reserving you a room in the healer’s wing.”
“What for?”
“Because I’m getting ready to sedate you again and take you to the healer’s wing,” he informed the young man. “Then I will hook you up to all kinds of machines to ensure that you are getting the proper nutrients.”
“You won’t get the chance,” Ben snapped.
“Don’t press me, young one. I will not tolerate any foolishness from you.”
Ben knocked the comm unit out of Alano’s hands and sent it flying across the room. The youth quickly stood up and drew his fist back to hit the healer. Alano had moved so fast, that Ben didn’t know how he ended up on his knees, with the healer firmly gripping his wrists.
“I think you better rethink your strategy; you left yourself wide open. Surprise is a very useful weapon, don’t you agree?”
The young man glared at the healer. Ben struggled as Alano pulled him to his feet.
“Stand still!” the healer barked.
Ben froze. What was it about this Jedi that evoked such fear in him? He hadn’t been afraid of the Jedi for a long time. Once he escaped, he vowed never to fear them again, but now he couldn’t explain the fact that he was absolutely terrified of this man.
“Sit down!” Alano ordered.
The young man sat on the bed, his eyes fixed on the Jedi healer.
“Now, you listen to me. There’s nobody here who wants to hurt you. I know that you don’t believe that right now, but soon you’ll come to realize that I’m right. You need help.”
“I don’t need your help!”
“That’s where you’re wrong. Everybody needs help sometime. Now, I’m going to let you go. Don’t try anything stupid.”
Ben pulled his wrists out of Alano’s grasp and scooted back on the bed. He watched as the healer placed a plate and a glass on the nightstand and moved back.
“Eat,” Alano insisted.
The youth refused to move as he continued to glare at the healer. “No.”
“Fine.” The healer pulled out another hypo spray and took a step towards Ben.
Ben shook his head. He couldn’t be sedated again. If he was sedated, then he would sleep and dream. He didn’t want to dream anymore. He picked up the sandwich and took a bite and then another.
“I knew that you’d see things my way,” Alano smiled.
“I hate you,” Ben mumbled between bites, his eyes following the healer’s every move.
“I know you do. Hate consumes you. You know nothing else but hate.”
“That’s not true,” the young man countered. “I knew what love was once, but I quickly discovered that love was just another lie.”
Ben finished the sandwich and gulped the glass of juice down. He pulled his knees up to his chest, refusing to talk to the healer any longer. The teen’s head was still throbbing and all he wanted was to be left alone. He could feel his eyes closing and he shook his head, wincing as the pain intensified.
“Can’t sleep,” he whispered to himself.
He got out of bed and began pacing around the room. The healer’s eyes were now following him, but he tried not to think about it. Right now, he couldn’t think about anything except how bad his head hurt. Ben stumbled and fell to his knees. He felt the strong hands of the healer around his shoulders.
The youth pulled away from Alano, fearing that he would sedate him again. “Leave me alone! I’m fine.”
“Sure you are. Come on, you need to get back in bed.”
“No! I’m not going to sleep!”
“You need to sleep.”
“No,” the teen continued to protest. “What I need is to get out of here!”
“Not right now, maybe later.”
“Liar,” Ben challenged. “They’re never going to let me out of here.”
The sound of the door chime interrupted the healer’s reply. Ben felt Alano’s firm grasp on his bicep as the healer silently insisted that the teen accompany him to answer the door. Before the healer could activate the comm unit, the door opened and Bant Eerin and Garen Muln barged in.
Ben stared at the two strangers as they hugged him. He pulled back from their embrace and hid in behind Healer Alano.
“Obi-Wan!” Bant exclaimed. “I can’t believe…”
That was all the Mon Calamarian was able to utter before Ben’s world began crashing down on top of him.
