Rutan confessed he had not thought of that. His old bodyguard had never mentioned it; but then his old bodyguard had not mentioned much. He had been a silent, looming, intimidating man, and only answered Rutan’s questions when directly ordered to do so. “That is a problem. Being my bodyguard, well that is probably the best job in the whole galaxy,” he smiled. “I would not want to deprive you of it. No, that would never do.”

“No, Majesty.”

“I was joking. You may laugh if you wish.”

“Of course, Majesty.”

Rutan held up a finger. “I have an idea. What if you were to sit on a chair behind me? Would that do?”

“I should not sit in your presence at all, Majesty.”

“That can not be good for your legs, Mr. Man. I am only thinking of your health. Your ankles will be worn to the bone in no time at all.”

“You are joking again, Majesty?”

Rutan tilted his head back and laughed. “Now we are getting somewhere!”

Mr. Man allowed a smile to crease his face.

I LOVE it! "You may laugh if you wish" makes me laugh every time!
I like the relationship that's building between Mr. Man and Rutan! I can easily see them forming a friendship akin to that of Artimus Fowl and Butler!
Another excellent entry, MK. Can't wait for the next chapter!

Oooh, I loved the interaction between Rutan and Mr Man. Reminds me of the movie Arthur (Dudley Moore) where one of the only people he could be himself with was his butler, the other being the woman he fell in love with, not the woman he married.

I loved that movie just like I'm loving this story.

Another great chapter M_K. applause I'm eagerly awaiting the meeting of the betrothed.

~!~Chapter 4: Part I of II~!~

Two days passed. With the passing of those days came the appearance of a great holiday that was celebrated throughout the entire Hapes Consortium. It was the Day of the Queen Mother. On this day the Queen Mother’s of the past were remembered and revered, and the current one was showered with praise, encouragement, and of course, gifts.

The entire Hapan Royal family was to parade down the streets in beautifully designed hover-floats; they would start their journey from the Fountain Palace. From there they would weave through the streets for a half a mile, loop around, and end their journey at the Palace once again.

The Queen Mother would then sit on a large gold throne to accept gifts and well wishes from the Hapan people. Only the wealthiest and most influential of people would be allowed to approach her with presents, however. The public would not be allowed near. She would be enclosed within the palace gates, snug and comfortable on her throne, while thousands bustled and shoved each other outside just to catch a glimpse of their Queen.

Hapans always traveled from far and wide for the event, and from every planet in the Consortium. It was a day long affair that would start early in the morning and end well after nightfall. The entire day would be, according to Mr. Man, a bodyguard’s worst nightmare.

He carefully explained to Rutan how much danger he would be in for the entire length of the day. Millions of people were expected to attend the celebration; chances of a possible assassination were high, and security was at a Red Alert level.

Rutan was not to go anywhere unattended. Mr. Man would be at his elbow the entire day, never to leave his side; he would eat, talk, and even go to the ‘fresher accompanied. He would need to keep his eyes open for any suspicious activity and was not to take any unnecessary chances. He was not to do anything at all out of the ordinary or unexpected.

“And last of all, you must carry this with you at all times,” Mr. Man said. He reached in his jacket and brought out a small, hand-held blaster. “Keep it on your person wherever it is you think you will be able to draw it quickest. It is for self-defense only. Turn this switch here to set it from stun to kill. Hold it—”

Rutan took the blaster and stuffed it in his inside over-coat pocket. “I know how to handle a blaster, thank you. I spent a short time at a military academy. I have also been versed in three kinds of weaponless self defense.”

Mr. Man nodded approvingly. “It sets my mind at ease to know that.”

“Good.” Rutan turned to look at himself in a floor-to-ceiling reflector to examine his ceremonial outfit. He spoke to Mr. Man’s reflection. “You are very worried I see.”

Mr. Man bowed his head. His forehead had been creased all morning in a perpetual frown, and his eyes were continually darting to and fro, checking all exits and entrances. “Your safety is my utmost concern.”

“I am exceedingly glad to know that you take your job so seriously,” Rutan said, “especially as that job is me.”

“Always, Prince Rutan.”

Rutan grinned.

“That was another joke, I suppose?”

“You are learning.”

The bodyguard gave a noncommittal grunt. “Majesty, it is far too early in the morning for me to laugh. Though if you insist, I can certainly try.”

Rutan chuckled to himself. “Not necessary.”

He turned around to face the bodyguard, holding his arms away from his sides. “How do I look?” He was dressed in a close-fitting, tailored dress suit made from the finest of Hapan cotton. Each member of the Royal family was assigned two Royal colors at birth: Rutan’s were purple and black, which his suit portrayed. The family crest stood out prominently on his chest in a shade of lighter purple, which made it e
specially eye-catching.

Mr. Man was dressed in a similar suit. “You will look better tomorrow, when this whole affair is over and done with.”

Rutan added a false sense of sternness to his voice. “Was that your attempt at a joke, bodyguard? I do not think you’ve quite gotten the hang of it yet.”

Mr. Man bowed slightly at the waist. “Certainly not, Majesty.”

~!~

The parade float that Rutan was to ride in was actually a slick landspeeder—the latest model—painted in alternating stripes of black and deep purple. Like on Rutan’s tunic, the family crest was displayed on the side of the vehicle in light purple. His name had been hand-painted on the other side in curly, fluid letters.

Mr. Man was extremely displeased when he saw it. “They might as well have painted a large, purple target on your back.”

Rutan ran an admiring hand down the landspeeder’s shiny new paint. “May I drive it?”

The bodyguard’s tone was unyielding. “Absolutely not. That would pose an extreme security risk. If you were to need to take cover you could not do it while driving.”

Rutan sighed. “I was afraid you were going to say that.”

“It is for the best.”

“Are you driving, then?”

“No. I will be watching you and the surrounding area. There will be a separate driver.”

Rutan spread his hands. “Who is the lucky man?”

There was a clanking sound from beneath the speeder and then a muffled voice said, “That would be me.” A head appeared, and then a body, as a young man scooted out from under the belly of the vehicle. He stood and gave a bow. “It is an honor, Prince Rutan.” He looked to be no older than thirty; he had a very pleasant face and a self-confident and assured air about him.

There was something beneath the surface, though, that left Rutan ill at ease. He held out his hand. “A pleasure, I am sure. Your name, sir?”

“Oh, um.” The man hurriedly wiped his greasy hand off on his pants before shaking Rutan’s. “Issel Gon, Majesty.”

Mr. Man hid a grin. There was a certain familiarity with the way he was acting around Issel Gon that implied he knew him. “There is no need to look so surprised, Issel. I told you he was not like the others.”

“Indeed not! He asked for my name? Shook my hand?” Issel Gon shook Rutan’s hand with a new energy. “An honor, Majesty. A true honor!”

Rutan smiled kindly. “Why don’t you change out of those greasy clothes and into your ceremonial suit? We have a parade to go to, after all.”

“Oh, yes, sorry.” Issel quickly released Rutan’s hand and gestured down at his mechanic’s overalls. “Of course, Majesty. I was merely double-checking the speeder’s fuel levels.” He looked at Mr. Man. “I also did that scan for tracking and explosive devices that you told me to do. She is clean, as I knew she would be. She has been under very tight security.”

Mr. Man nodded. “Good.”

Issel checked the chronometer on his wrist. “I’ve got just enough time for a quick shower and a change.” He bowed to Rutan and took his leave.

Rutan watched him go. “Who is he? You seemed to know him.”

Mr. Man crossed his arms thoughtfully. “That is very perceptive of you, Majesty. Yes, I have known Issel Gon for…a few years.”

He offered no additional information and Rutan felt it rude to ask for more. “He seemed pleasant enough, but there was something unnerving about him. I cannot quite place what it was.”

“Yes, he does seem to have that affect on people. I admit that I do not particularly trust him.”

Rutan frowned. “You are my protector; I do not trust anyone you do not trust.”

“I requested a replacement driver, but I was denied.” Mr. Man scratched behind his ear thoughtfully. “We will just have to be on our guard.”

Rutan jumped over the open cockpit of the speeder and into the back seat. He grinned. “Then we will just have to make the best of it. The seats back here are very comfortable, at least.”

“Permission to roll my eyes, Majesty?”

“Permission granted.”

Uh-oh..... I hope nothing bad happens to Rutan. I'm rather fond of him.

BTW, that better not be him committing suicide in the prologue ... or if he is, I hope someone is there to stop him!

He's a nice OC!

~!~Chapter 4 Part II of II~!~

~!~

The parade was long, boring, and above all, nerve-racking. Rutan had to smile and wave to thousands of faceless Hapans while appearing to be strong and in control. In reality, he was a nervous wreck. He kept imagining he saw vicious felons standing in the crowd, pointing shiny blasters his way.

Mr. Man was on his guard, as well. He kept speaking into his collar where a comlink was pinned to talk to the security guards stationed along the length of the parade route.

There had been one reported disturbance already that had occurred near another float. A fight had broken out between two male civilians; luckily, it had had nothing to do with the Royals and was quickly sorted out. This had happened only five minutes after the floats pulled out.

Issel Gon was driving the speeder along at a snail’s pace. Judging by how tightly he was gripping the steering yoke and by the way he kept looking from side to side, he too was feeling the tense atmosphere.

Rutan turned his face to the crowds with a false smile on his lips and a nervous wave of his hand. His eyes, meanwhile, scanned the blurred faces warily for anyone who might contain even a trace of ill will or anger.

All he saw, though, were happy, cheering faces. He also saw dozens of hand-made banners—no doubt made by pre-teen girls—announcing their undying love for him.

“I love you Rutan!”

“Marry me!”

Whenever Rutan felt the need to speak, he would talk only through the corner of his falsely smiling mouth; he was taking special care not to let the words actually form by his lips. It would not be a good thing if a lip-reading tabloid writer were to pick up on his words. “Is this parade almost over yet?”

“Not yet, a little while longer,” was Mr. Man’s response.

“You know, I was never this worried when I did this same parade with my other bodyguard,” Rutan said.

“Then your other bodyguard was a careless fool.” Mr. Man turned around halfway in his seat to look at Rutan. “You are doing marvelously so far, Majesty. We are nearly—“

“HEY!”

Rutan’s eyes snapped forward. Standing directly in the path of their landspeeder was a smiling young woman with bright orange hair. How she had gotten past the security guards and into the path of parade, he could not fathom.

Issel Gon motioned her out of the way with his hands. “Move it, lady!”

The landspeeder crept up on her. She was at least fifteen feet away, but time was running out. They would soon be on top of her. She did not move, but continued to stand in place. The smile never once left her face.

“She is not moving; I am going to have to brake,” Issel Gon addressed Mr. Man. “Signal the other floats and tell security to get over here.”

Mr. Man bent over to retrieve a red flag that would signal the following floats to brake, when—

The speeder shot forward. Rutan gasped, unable to scream, spiked by sudden adrenaline. The sudden momentum pressed him and the other two men into the backs of their seats.

The woman dived to the ground, a silent scream on her lips. The hovering landspeeder passed safely over her.

The collision that followed happened in an instant.

The float directly in the landspeeder’s path was a beautiful display of blue Hapan roses, the kind that turn red when touched. The float was at least twice as big as the speeder and was blissfully unaware of the peril it was in.

The landspeeder sped toward the slow-moving float as if the other vehicle was standing perfectly still.

Rutan was whip-lashed forward as the two vehicles collided. His forehead hit the seat ahead of him with a loud crack that left his ears ringing.

He heard a loud screeching sound as metal ground on metal. This sound intermingled with a sparkly, almost magical sound as the landspeeder’s windshield shattered.

The deadly transparisteel shards sprayed everywhere. Mr. Man dove, as if in slow motion, into the back seat to protect his prince from harm with his own body.
The rear of the large rose float and the front of the landspeeder both crumpled into each other with the same apparent ease as a child destroying two flimsiplast cups.

There was a sudden burst of color as the blue roses of the other float burst into a stunning red. Like an explosion, the roses that before had been so artfully placed, spattered onto the pavement.

Pain laced Rutan as tiny shards of glass and metal pierced him. Mr. Man finally landed on him, protecting him at his own expense from most of the larger transparisteel pieces.

The weight of the larger man hitting him left Rutan breathless and he struggled to breathe or cry out. There was a shrill ringing sound in his ears and it took him a moment to realize that it was the terrified and confused screams of the crowd. There were some harsher shouts, too, that sounded less panicky and more commanding. In his addled state he was able to recognize that it was the Hapan Royal Guard, holding back the crowds from surging forward to add more confusion to the wreckage.

Mr. Man was deadweight on his chest, and Rutan could only guess that the big man was merely unconscious. He suppressed the thought that he might be dead. He tried to move, but was pinned.

There were sudden loud voices. Hands reached in to lift Mr. Man from Rutan’s chest. The bodyguard gave a low moan, but his eyes did not open and he remained limp.

A rush of fresh air filled Rutan’s lungs and he drank deeply. “Thank you,” he gasped out.

He struggled to sit but a strong hand held him down. “No, Majesty, we have to be sure you are not injured before you can be moved,” a woman’s voice said.

Rutan looked at her and quickly spotted a red cross alongside the Royal Crest on the woman’s tight-fitting cap and jacket sleeves. He realized that she must be a field medic. “You moved my bodyguard quickly enough. Is he all right? He is not dead, is he?”

The medic busied herself by prodding and poking Rutan’s chest and limbs, and did not answer.

Rutan stared at her for a moment. There was something deeply unsettling about her appearance; he could not quite place what it was. He flinched at her touch and shrunk away from her. “What are the code words? You can not touch me without telling me the code words.”

The woman hesitated. “Um…”

There was a flash of white as the woman’s fist shot out and connected with Rutan’s face. He saw stars. There were more shouts, which became garbled into confusion by the sudden pain in his head. He shook it off and struggled to a sitting position. He blinked away the remaining stars from his vision.

The moment his head cleared the speeder, a blaster bolt whizzed past him close enough to singe his hair. He ducked down again with a startled gasp.

The next time he did not sit up, but merely peeked up over the top of the back seat. He looked up just in time to spot the “medic” woman as she was disappearing into the barely-contained crowd. She was putting something in her jacket pocket.

Frowning, Rutan reached into his own pocket to discover his own blaster was missing.

He peeked into the front seat briefly to see that Issel Gon was not there. Had he been thrown from the vehicle? Rutan looked over the side of the speeder at the surrounding ground, searching for him.

There were many things on the ground: large pieces of metal, wood, and shattered transparisteel glass. It looked like a small, contained war zone, almost as if a bomb had gone off. Moreover, to complete the image, there were bodies on the ground, splayed and unmoving. The roses that were littered around them made it look like some grotesque funeral.

The adrenaline that had been coursing so fiercely through Rutan’s body left him in a rush. It left his entire body shaky and weak; he shrunk down into the backseat, overcome by dizziness.

Blurry faces — he was pleased to note that they were living faces and not dead ones — suddenly swam into view. Their mouths said things he did not care to hear so he turned away. They reached out to touch him and he pulled away.

“The code words!” He yelled at them. “Tell me the code words!”

He stayed conscious long enough to hear one of them say, “Delta Alto, Majesty.”

Only then did he allow himself to slip into relaxation, darkness, and silence.

I like best the part about the blue roses that turn red when touched. That is a great bit of imagination! And very well used to create a vivid scene when the two vehicles collided.

Like everyone else I am in suspenders to see what happens next. And very curious about the plot that is hinted at against Rutan's life.

I like the way you have portrayed this OC. He is very human and ordinary in his reactions to things. Yet he is also very engaging and likeable. Very well done! Also your description of the sights and sounds of the crash, and his sensations as the adrenaline wave hit and then passed, were great!

Be sure to keep me on the pm list.
