“Aren’t you afraid, little Jedi Padawan?” the Hutt asked. In his voice there wasn’t practiced malice. No, it was promised. She’d heard it before in those that bartered lives as though they were muja fruit.

Abruptly, Siri imagined herself as a muja in those big beefy hands, squeezing the life juice out of her.

She gave a shiver that had little to do with the damp, cold warehouse. “No,” she lied effectively. “Cold? Yes. Bored? Sure. Annoyed? You bet.”

OH yes, that's Siri! laugh applause

“All and more, my dear,” Raith assured her. “He is loyal to a fault.” Now there is abit of the Obi-Wan I know.

Loved Siri's sarcasm with the Hutt. Very like her to be unable to stop her mouth even under duress.

I do wonder why the step mothers questions Ben's' loyalty .

Ben is also a good judge of character, so I also wonder why he seems
uncomfortable with his step mother.

Love this story, very original plot.

did I miss how Ben came back to his father? raised_brow

Hope you update soon

I would not have allowed you to die for me, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon’s voice from eight years ago rang in his mind. He’d said it often when his Master had believed Obi-Wan too quick to put his life in danger, too reckless to consider his options.

“Be quiet,” Ben hissed, pushing away from the hall wall.

He had an organization to run.

Is that a guilty conscience there or is it something else? thinking

It's good that Qui-Gon's teachings haven't completely been pushed away in light of Obi-Wan's new life. But it would also seem that his old master's lessons are beginning to annoy him.

I liked Siri's sarcasm; she was indeed being who she was without remorse, despite Qui-Gon's attempts to reign her in. laugh

I too am looking forward to Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Siri's meeting. I'm also constantly re-reading the title. thinking

Can't wait to see where this goes. Another update soon? happy

Hmmm... I'm getting a weird feeling from Vessa... not necessarily bad, but weird... thinking But Ben was right, the explosion has just made Qui-Gon and Siri investigate further... but now I wonder, will Obi have a chance of going back to the Jedi? He still think about it, though trys to push it away... confused

And I know I probably shouldn't, but I kinda want Obi-Wan/Ben to stay a crime lord. tongue grin

I was worried about writing Siri but I think in this chapter and the one with Thagger I really got into her. She's very hot headed on the outside but she has a soft heart on the inside.

Chapter 4:

There was a blaster pointed at his head. Lazily, Ben brought his azure gaze up at his attacker, the
barrel of the pistol catching each of his eyes. “Did I say something to offend you, Srog’tey?”

The Bothan’s fur fluttered in a line, starting at her feet and moving to her head. Ben watched it
with rapt attention. Every being has its own signs of nervousness. Humans have several. They
won’t make eye contact, they’ll wring their hands, or develop a twitch. You learn these tails and
you have a rare insight.

Ben had given up on trying to dispel Qui-Gon’s voice from his head. At least for the time being.
As painful as it was, he often found sound advice.

“You have no loyalty to Unngol, Srog’tey. There is no need for this display.”

The muzzle of the pistol, now digging a cold ring in Ben’s forehead, trembled in the Bothan’s
hand. The pale eyes, set deep in the furred face, did not flicker or avoid Ben’s own. Ben quietly
cocked an eyebrow. He was already bored with this part of taking control of Unnogl’s
organization. This was the third time that his life had been threatened in the last hour.

He could easily bat the blaster away from his head before the Bothan had time to pull the trigger,
but he wanted to earn Srog’tey’s loyalty. She was one of the newest of Unngol’s recruits and had
familial connections to the sectors only ship manufacturer. Apparently, Unngol had kidnaped
Srog’tey and had used her as leverage to obtain the ships he needed.

Ben wanted and needed those ships. He was willing to go to the steps that Unngol had taken, but
he knew it would be easier if he could convince Srog’tey to work with him on her own free will.
The enforced would always rebel.

“I just want to go home,” Srog’tey said.

“Of course,” Ben said soothingly.

The gun didn’t waiver but a stillness fell over the Bothan girl. She blinked at Ben in open
surprise. “What?”

“Do not mistake me, Srog’tey. I am not Unngol, but I do need the ships your family provided for
him. I would do that with your help, with a percentage of the profits going to your shipyards.”

Next to him, gan Aussier straightened in surprise.

“I need those ships,” Ben reiterated. “I give you access to the communication center. Feel free to
broach the subject with you father and mother. It is a good deal. Don’t pass up this
opportunity.”

A veiled threat, but one he hoped the Bothan would not miss. He was not the type to press use a
blaster to get what he wanted, especially if he could do things more delicate like.

When Srog’tey didn’t answer or even move, Ben brought a hand up and moved the blaster from
his forehead. He set it upon the table in front of them. “You may go now.”

His voice broke through the cold paralysis that had frozen around her. The Bothan all but ran out
of the conference room. The door slid shut, giving her retreat a definitive air. Ben slumped back
against the conforming chair and rubbed at his eyes.

He nearly jumped out of his seat when warm, soft lips pressed to his ear. “Do you need relaxing,
Boss Kenobi?”

A hand lighted on his thigh, a tingling weight.

Nothing attracted a mynock faster then a fresh power cable. Until now, Ben had been exempt
from Cordala’s advances.

“Do you have a problem with personal boundaries, gan Aussier?” he questioned in a disapproving
tone.

Her laugh was a pleasant low thrum. “I don’t believe in boundaries.”

Ben put his hand over hers. “Too bad,” he said, raising her hand and pushing into her lap.
“Civilized people do.”

“Your father would approve a joining between us,” gan Aussier said, guessing at the reason
behind his rejection.

“My father trusts my judgement.” He stood, wanting to escape this conversation. It was true.
His father would eventually want him to pick a wife, build a family, continue the Kenobi line.

“It’s her, then?” Cordala asked. “The girl you left the Jedi for - what was her name - Siri?”

Ice replaced the warm blood in his veins. He narrowed a commanding glare at his father’s
lieutenant. “What do you know about that?”

She shrugged, his ire not even an irritation to her. “You are not as mysterious as you would like
to be, Boss Kenobi.”

“I don’t take kindly to spying.”

“She probably despises you now,” gan Aussier mussed to herself, ignoring Ben’s last comment.
“You poor thing. Leaving everything behind for the girl you love and finding out she doesn’t love
you enough to follow you. Makes all this seem rather fruitless doesn’t it?”

Ben had not thought of Siri in a long time. Unlike Qui-Gon’s voice, he had been able to push her
and the memory of her aside, saving it at the back of his mind where he could access it at will.

He hated the reminder of her.

“Push me too far, Cordala, and you might find us more intimate then you will be comfortable
with.”

“I am a very tolerant person,” she said, brushing a lock of pale hair from her shoulder.

Ben gave a sharp nod. “I wonder how your late husband felt about your tolerance.” He only a
caught a flicker of her surprise through the Force.

“Spying, Ben?”

“Oh, no. Not spying. I just like to know who I’m working with.” The corners of his lips
twitched in a subtle smile. “And what they are capable of.”

She rose from her chair, swaying her hips over to him. Face to face, he could smell the warm
musk of her breath, feel it on his cheek. “That’s something else we have in common. Though, I
am told I have much in common with your lost love.”

Both Siri and Cordala were tall, blonde, with startling dark eyes that stood out in contrast with
the soft light of their features. But that was where the similarities ended. Siri had been a
powerhouse of righteousness and spirit. In her case, the beauty outside had reflected only a
portion of the inner spirit. Cordala’s only served to mask the darkness within.

Obi-Wan had changed much when he’d become Ben, but this was not an exception he was willing
to make.

“Dally elsewhere, Cordala,” he said, taking a step away. “I’d like to keep myself away from the
funeral pyre.

Her smile was an expanse of pearl white teeth. “One day you’ll change your mind.”

“Forgive me if I disagree.”

Ben’s comlink chirped inside his tunic. “Excuse me.”

“Ben,” Raith’s voice came over the speaker.

“Father, your timing is perfect,” he said. “What can I help you with?”

As gan Aussier left, she ran a finder delicately over his shoulder. “Think about it Kenobi.”

“One of Unngol’s men has received an alert from a security company. Apparently, one of our
newly acquired store houses has been infiltrated.”

“Are the perpetrators still inside?” Ben asked.

“Presumably.”

“I’m on my way.”

Master Thagger’s apartment sat in a dingy building not far from Varden City. Dirt and disrepair
fought against the local graffiti. The rooms were clean, the beds soft, and the blankets warm.

Siri had slipped into a healing trance and had slept through the night. Qui-Gon had not.

He could not explain his restlessness, nor why he hadn’t taken the opportunity to care for his own
superficial injuries. Instead, he’d wandered the apartment, searching for anything that Thagger
might have left behind.

Reporting to the Council had not revealed any information. The last time Thagger had contacted
them, he had been across the galaxy on Qui-Gon’s home planet. That was enough to get his mind
questioning. He had only visited his home world once, while he’d still been an apprentice himself.
It was where he’d found the river stone, he’d eventually given to Obi-Wan.

He’d cast the late Jedi Master’s former location aside, hoping to avoid the tide of tainted
memories and getting caught in its undertow. His focus turned to Da’cargen and why the Jedi
Master would have traveled such a large length and so suddenly, only to meet his death here.

For the first part of the night, well into the early morning hours, Qui-Gon had meditated, seeking
out a residual of Thagger’s presence. He hadn’t known the man well, bu the caught glimmers, a
shadowed figure of the stocky man pacing in the common room. In Siri’s room, he caught a
sense of peace and resolution.

It wasn’t until the first light of dawn pierced through the night sky that Qui-Gon saw Thagger
again, in the refresher, placing a holo disk on the underside of a cabinet.

Qui-Gon followed the ghost of the Jedi Master into the refresher.

It was small, the tiles stained a rusty brown from long use. The Force memory of Thagger had
disappeared, leaving Qui-Gon alone. He reached under the cabinet and felt the cold surface of the
holodisk fall into the palm of is hand, as if Thagger had been holding it, waiting for someone to
find.

For a long moment, the Jedi Master studied the disk. From his belt, he pulled a small player and
put the holodisk in. Thagger appeared in miniature, his stout figure and large flat face looked up
at Qui-Gon.

A chuckle emitted from the player, a deep happy sound, like the fireworks they set off on the day
of the Republic.

“I guess I’m dead then,” Master Thagger said with no small amount of humor. “Knew it was
coming, but it all sounds a little pretentious now.”

Qui-Gon thought he would have liked Master Thagger and mourned he had not taken the time to
get to know the Jedi Master better.

“I guess whoever finds this will know that Da’cargen is a nest of Gundarks. Each of them
yapping and snapping at each other for the biggest piece of meat, tearing into anything that gets in
the path of their jaws.”

There was a sound in the distance, a door opening and closing. Thagger only paused for a
moment before continuing.

“I’ve caught onto at least one plot. Big Boss named Unngol. He’s about to meet the Force.
They’re all after something, something Unngol’s got stashed in his storage house. I don’t think
the bug knows what he’s got or he’d be taking advantage of it. I’ve scrambled the coordinates
under the Sunrider algorithm.”

“Be careful. And don’t trust anything, nothing is as it seems.”

The transmission ended. Silence echoed loudly in the refresher.

Resetting the player, Qui-Gon turned it to scrambling the locations coordinates. A moment later
he had the latitude and longitude.

He went to Siri’s room, truthfully the only room. She was stretched out on the bed, her hands
pillowed beneath her head. The sun light was just beginning to play in her blonde. She looked
lovely, bright, and young. This must have been what Obi-Wan found he could not live without.

Siri had taken the brunt of the mission so far. She was a fierce fighter, and if Qui-Gon had been
going into a battle he’d have gladly taken her along.

Besides, he worked better alone. Siri’s insights were as valuable as anyone’s but they were too
closely attuned to his own. He didn’t need an echo of his own thoughts, what he needed...

He cut that thought off before it could get anymore complicated.

Mission directives changed all the time. He needed to go investigate and Siri needed to heal.

Pausing in the common room, he left a message with Siri, lining out what he was doing and for
her to contact the Council with the information he learned. He left the holo disk next to the
comm center.

By the will of the Force, he would be in and out before she even awoke.

The storage facility was on the corner of another run down neighborhood.. It was built like a
castle, high durasteel walls, bright light hung high in the sky, illuminating the perimeter. From
nearby, Qui-Gon analyzed.

Yoda often called him reckless. Normally, it was because the Jedi Grandmaster could not hear
the Force in the same way that Qui-Gon did, saw a leap of faith where Qui-Gon saw the
beginnings of a path.

It was mid day by the time he reached the facility and nearly evening when he had figured out the
security procedure. Retinal scans, check cards; he’d have to catch a guard as his shift was ending.

He could have spliced into the mainframe, if he knew how to splice into the mainframe.

Siri’s abilities in the Force may have echoed his own, but her skills - namely of the mechanical
variety - could have been invaluable.

Force, sometimes he was too damn blinded, usually about things that meant the most to him.

At nightfall, the guards rotated and he took his chance. He jumped the first lonely guard he
could find, taking his exit through the employee doors. With the pummel of his saber, he knocked
the man at the base of the skull, rendering him senseless.

Qui-Gon caught the Robaran before he hit the ground. The Robaran was of a slighter build than
Grizal, but still Qui-Gon needed a boost of the Force to keep the ungainly weight of the creature
upright.

Peeling the Robaran’s eyelids apart, he pressed the exposed eye to the reader plate. An instant
later the door spurted open. With a grunt, Qui-Gon threw himself and his unconscious baggage
through the door and landed in a heap on the opposite side. From the ground, Qui-Gon made a
quick survey of the area. He caught sight of a storage closet.

With another breath of the Force, he brought the Robaran up and stowed him in the closet. He
put a hand to the man’s head and eased some of the swelling, then snatched the keycard from the
Robaran’s pocket.

“Thank you, my friend,” he whispered before sealing the door.

He ignited his lightsaber long enough to run through the locking mechanism, melting it to slag.

Qui-Gon took the keycard to the computer consul and ran it through the reader, automatically the
system came up, a directory of each storage compartment. White files flashed against the black
screen. Reaching out to the Force, Qui-Gon let it guide his hands and clicked on one of the white
files.

It gave the owners name, Ratican Industries, and the number of the storage compartment.

Qui-Gon opened another window and accessed Varden City. He initiated a search and entered
Ratican Industries. An overview of the company popped up, nothing especially out of the usual.
A place like Da’cargen would have more than its fair share of shipping companies.

Memorizing the storage container number, Qui-Gon moved his way into the unit facility. The
keycard let him in. He stepped into the dimness, red lights hovering over each of the storage units
illuminating the numbers imprinted in black.

He found the container belonging to Ratican Industries and used the keycard once again. Storage
containers lined the three walls, marked in foreign script Qui-Gon didn’t recognize. He walked
amongst the boxes, wondering what it was here that Thagger had learned of and had paid with his
life for this knowledge.

And if such knowledge would lead to his own demise.

From outside the storage facility, the door opened and several pairs of footsteps came into the
facility.

Qui-Gon moved to close the door to the unit he was investigating, but paused as his hand hung
over the button. There was a swirl in the Force, announcing a presence he had thought he would
never feel again.

“Ben,” a voice asked, concise, sharp, not without a small note of indulgence.

“Over there, Father,” another voice answered, low, with a heavy Coruscanti accent.

Even if Qui-Gon had been capable of tricking himself into believing that he had somehow misread
the Force, the voice of the young man confirmed the truth. Qui-Gon’s heart was suddenly
constricted, his ribcage shrinking until breath was stolen from him.

A light abruptly hit his eyes and woke him from his paralysis. Five large beings, two Robarans, a
Araknian, and two whiphids circled the entrance of the unit, each had a blaster pointed at him.

“It’s a Jedi, my Lord,” one of the Robaran’s, a black furred creature with green eyes.

“Ben,” the voice he’d heard before cautioned.

“It is alright, Father. He already knows it’s me. Bring him out.”

The five as one made a gesture and too a step back to allow him room to come forward. Qui-
Gon did so, vaguely surprised that his feet could move while his brain had gone meltdown.

“Could we have some light?” the older voice asked.

Immediately, the man’s command was answered and Qui-Gon blinked at the sudden brightness.
As his vision coalesced he caught sight of a young man, twenty years of age, ruddy brown hair
grown out to brush against the collar of his fine tunic. A Padawan braid hung from behind his
right ear. The cut of his tunic and pants was simple, but the fabric was of the finest spun
shimmersilk.

Next to him stood a man that should what the young man would be in the future. Not overly tall,
but commanding in presence. He was dressed more fine then the young man with a cape tied at
his neck. His eyes were the same arresting blue and his red brown hair came to his shoulders.

“You recognize him?” the older man asked of his younger counterpart.

“Yes, Father. This is Qui-Gon Jinn.”

A delighted light came into the older man’s eyes. “Your teacher. Of course. Master Jinn, I am
Lord Raith Kenobi. It is a pleasure to meet the man that gave my Ben so much skill.”

Qui-Gon gaped at him uncomprehending. He turned to his former Padawan to make sense of this
sudden turn of events. “Obi-Wan.”

“Hello, Master,” Obi-Wan said quietly, coldly. He looked past Qui-Gon with an impatient air. "Stun him."

“Hello, Master,” Obi-Wan said quietly, coldly. He looked past Qui-Gon with an impatient air. "Stun him."

Not the best of reunions... laugh

But a great update! applause

If you have to choose between tears and laughter, remember that laughter burns more calories.

"Stun him."

What a reunion! Wait till Qui-Gon gets the full scoop.
