monkeykelci Regarding those older fanfics, yeah, I normally don't read fics like that with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan having a bad relationship. That did use to be common back then though. As far as post Xan, I wasn't even considering Xan as a factor here. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for reading!

Valairy_Scot I'm glad you liked it! That's my favorite part of his character too, in fanfics. happy Thanks for reading!

Gkilkenny No, he always struck me as the type to use any situation as a lesson, no matter what. And he sure does! Thanks for reading!

jedidas3 Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying them, I'm having fun working on them. grin

dimyavie Obi-Wan I think always has that fear at some point or another, and I'm glad you are enjoying them! Thanks for reading!

Dianethx He did need a hug, he really thought Qui-Gon was going to tell him that, poor boy, but Qui-Gon set him straight. love Thanks for reading!

Bastet They became Master and Padawan when Obi-Wan was younger than 8. wink I plan to address that in my Qui-Gon journal, Into Another Day . I'm glad you're enjoying the mush, I'm having fun with them grin

Star-Foozle I'm glad they're tasty wink Wonder what kind they are? tongue I guess it depends on what you want it to be, yes? grin And yeah, he always struck me as an up with the chickens sorta guy, like my mom. tongue Obi needed a hug, he's glad to get them! This next one is for you and is all your fault.

Kelia Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

A/N:
This is a companion vignette to one I did awhile back A Spoonful of Waffles .

Simple Gestures

"The simplest things are often the truest." Richard Bach

The lights were off and the boy's presence in the room felt muted as Dooku entered, balancing his burden carefully. He glanced at the tray as he put it down, and took up the datapad to make note of the boy's symptoms for the day. Also on the tray was a bowl of water, a rag to sponge off the child's forehead, some soup and tea. In addition to all this, there were bright blue Iaeronian bulbs in the same fake crystalline vase that Qui-Gon had brought him flowers in not long ago.

Three days ago, the boy had become violently ill first at a banquet, and then as that had subsided, he had developed a high fever. Dooku was grateful that the worst of the illness seemed to be over, but he still was monitoring him closely.

He had thought the flowers might entice Qui-Gon into sitting up and examining them, and then hopefully get him to eat and drink a little something. The Master knew Qui-Gon needed sleep to recover, and he hated to wake him, but he also needed nourishment and to stay hydrated.

He put the tray down on the dresser and carefully peeled back one of the covers to access the boy's forehead, before he took the thermometer in hand to scan the boy. As he did so, he surveyed his apprentice. The padawan's sweaty face was not quite as flushed as it had been the last two days and glancing at the reading on the thermometer, the Jedi Master let out a relieved sigh. The fever was breaking at last.

"Qui-Gon?" he said gently, shaking the boy's shoulder to rouse him.

There was no reply from the child under the covers and so the Master shook him just a bit harder.

"Qui-Gon," he said again to the silence.

There was a long pause, before the boy began to stir.

"I brought you some flowers," he said in a rush, before the padawan could go back to sleep again.

Dooku felt the disbelief as his apprentice cracked an eye open.

"Iaeronian bulbs, I remember you told me you liked them," he continued on, sounding more than slightly disconcerted at the continued silence. He was feeling vaguely worried that the boy wasn't showing further interest. After all, he had gotten flowers! It wasn't the sort of thing he did everyday, for just anybody. But he had thought his ailing apprentice would like them. Perhaps he had been mistaken? Perhaps a different type of flower might have been better.

Qui-Gon 's eyes fluttered open all the way and he looked at his Master. After a long silence, he carefully moved, struggling to sit up, without much success. His arms did not want to cooperate with the lack of energy in his system and he merely fell back against the pillows, tired even from that small effort.

Dooku came over beside him to fluff the boy's pillows and to help him sit up, piling them behind him and moving him to where he could more easily.

"You remembered?" it was said in a whisper, almost too soft to hear, awe in his words.

"Yes, I did," Dooku replied, "Would you like to see them?"

Qui-Gon gave a slow nod and Dooku brought the tray from the dresser over to him, balancing it carefully as he did so.

The padawan ignored the soup and tea, focusing on the flowers, delicately taking one out of the vase to examine it more closely and he took a deep breath, closing his eyes as he did so.

The aromatic nature of the plant was almost overwhelming. It was so bright, so fresh and alive smelling, mixed with the scent of the soil and the dampness of the ground it had been plucked out of. He inhaled again, and set it carefully back in its vase it had come in, and then he began to examine the other things on the tray, before he picked up the mug of tea and took a cautious sip.

Dooku smiled watching him. It appeared he had been correct in his assessment. Flowers would entice his boy into sitting up and getting the nourishment he needed. Such a simple thing, but it seemed to give his boy so much pleasure. "Do you want me to put these by your bed?"

The boy nodded, as he took another sip of tea. He didn't quite know what to say. His master had taken care of him before when he was sick, but nothing like this.

"Do you want to try some soup?" Dooku asked, seeing his gaze.

"Yes, Master," he said after a long moment. He did want to at least attempt it, since his Master had gone to all the trouble.

"Need me to help you?" the Master asked mildly and Qui-Gon shook his head negative as he picked up the spoon and began to eat.

"Master?" the boy's voice was quiet, thoughtful even.

"Hrm?" Dooku looked at him from where he'd been repositioning the flowers in the vase.

"You didn't have to do all this," he said in an even softer voice.

Dooku glanced back at the boy, hearing the guilt there in the words. "I know I didn't."

"Why did you?" he asked.

The Master cupped the boy's face gently with his hand. "Does there need to be a reason, Qui-Gon?"

Qui-Gon's face reddened slightly. "No, Master."

There was a comfortable silence between the two for a while, as Qui-Gon ate, before the Master spoke up again. "You did the same for me," he reminded gently, tugging the boy's braid. "But more than that, because I wanted to."

Qui-Gon blushed further, glancing down into his soup. He had rarely seen this side of his Master. The regal, more elegant side of his Master he was used to. This nurturing side, the protective fondness, had surprised him. Perhaps, he would be able to see it more as time went on and their relationship grew. "Master?"

"Hrm?" The Jedi asked.

"I really like the flowers," he gave a shy glance to Dooku, before his eyes went back to the flowers.

Dooku smiled.

Awwww....that was soooo sweet!!

love love love

At least Dooku knew just what it would take to peak Qui-Gon's interest - in waking up and eating a bit.

Though, I have to admit, it was a side of Dooku I didn't even think existed tongue

Great update

I love it when different facets of a character are revealed and explored. You did that here! And quite well.

That was sweet. I'm surprised that Dooku was that tender with Qui-Gon. Usually he's shown as having little heart and lots of steel in those eyes.

Good job.

*feels all fuzzy inside* Okay, I'll admit that I'm a huge sucker for Qui-and-Dooku mush. There's so little of it around these here parts, it seems. You do it quite well, though! Excellent job, and I'm glad to see that Dooks finally cooperated for you. grin

The great DookuQui Mush cannot be beaten! This was lovely.

Aha! The great master Dooku is a softie! He is just loathe to admit it. Hehe, I loved how Dooku got him his favorite flowers. So sweet! I Also enjoyed Qui-Gon's reaction, but the best part was complete interaction between the two. That's what really makes these kinds of fics memorable. The gentlemanly, lofty master and his sweet-natured, tree-hugger padawan. happy

Very, very nice! applause applause
