Oooo! Great post! I love how Yoda triumphed over his classmates. It's hard to believe that not one person his own age wants to be his friend. I think a lot will be resolved as a result of this confrontation. Can't wait for more.

Beep…beep…beep…

Master Kooz sat by Yoda as he lay unconscious on the small medic bed. It had been almost three days. All of the other students were awake at the very least. Most of them had already begun serving their time in the Jedi Service Corps to make up for their unspeakable act, which had been caught on the room’s holocams.

Yoda’s astonishingly few burns had all finished healing more than 48 hours ago. His physical body was in prime condition. His soul, however, was a different story.

The technique he had used out of instinct to defend himself had drained all of his energy, and even some of his very life force. Kooz had seen this happen before. He knew that Yoda needed to rest in order to restore what the Force had taken as payment to protect him.

But for three days?

No, there was something else going on here. Kooz could sense it. He could even see some small evidence of it. An ear twitch here, an eyebrow movement there. For at least the past 30 hours, he was almost certain that Yoda had been dreaming.

But of what? And why for so long?

He heard the door slide open. The presence of Master Vich entered the room. “Kooz-”

“I’m not leaving ‘til he wakes up.”

There was silence for a moment. “I just wanted to let you know that I was going to bed. Please call me when he’s up.”

Kooz nodded, and the door closed.

***

Flashes.

People, places, sights, sounds.

His life.

His friends, his assignments, his experiences.

His influence, his lasting impression on the galaxy.

His power.

All of these came in flashes.

They appeared to be in chronological order, and seemed to go on forever. Only now, after countless hours of dreaming, did he finally see signs of aging. It had been a long time since he’d seen someone he recognized from his present life.

Had they all died? If they had, then how?

After another half hour or so, the answer became clear – he’d outlived them.

He suddenly realized that he’d been seeing generations of Jedi flash by him. Had he not already seen some small signs of aging, he would’ve assumed that his race was immortal. But still, with as many generations as he had seen, his race must have an exceptionally long lifespan.

A question suddenly popped into his mind. He started to worry, the question immediately jolting from a whisper to a loud cry.

Would he ever see one of his own kind?

As if responding to his very thoughts, the flashes slowed, revealing a youngling girl of his race. She was training to be a Jedi. This comforted him.

The flashes sped up again. There was a length of time where he didn’t see the youngling girl, but she reappeared and became a regular part of the flashes, so he wasn’t worried.

He was old now. A gnarled, wooden-looking walking stick was his constant companion. What was left of his hair was white instead of reddish-brown. His face was a collection of wrinkles. His voice was… well, weird, a lot like Master Vandar’s.

But his power…

***

Kooz was awakened from his light sleep by a tiny vocalization. It was of the same sort as a youngling’s rebellious grunts when they were woken before they saw fit. He quickly sat up and lifted his body onto the bed. He’s waking up, he thought, almost as excited as he was relieved.

Thirty seconds later, Yoda’s eyes slowly opened. Kooz couldn’t help but smile. “Hey there,” he cooed.

Yoda turned his head to meet Master Kooz’s gaze. “Master…Kooz…” His voice was just above a whisper.

Kooz smiled. “Yes?”

“How long, asleep, have I been?”

“Three days.”

Yoda’s eyes closed, a look of disappointment sweeping over his face. “Missed the tournament, then, I did.”

Kooz almost had to bite his lip to keep from laughing. “Well, actually, the tournament was ah, canceled, at the last minute.”

Yoda shot him a look that was riddled with astonishment and bewilderment. “Why?”

Kooz decided that he was enjoying this far more than he should be. “Well,” he said indifferently as he scratched the back of his head, “they might’ve just postponed it…”

Yoda sat up. “Until when?”

Kooz cocked an eyebrow at him. “Why are you so worried about the tournament?”

The question seemed to catch him a bit off-guard. He let out a small, hesitant sigh. “Said you did, that when a Padawan you became, stop, the teasing did. Need to do well in the tournament, I do, so that choose me to be their Padawan, someone will.”

Kooz stopped. His heart felt like it’d been smacked by a ton of bricks. His emotions were caught in an awkward cross of awe, pity, and guilt; he was in awe that this youngling had taken such an assertive stance on the situation, felt pity towards the horrid circumstances that had driven him to do so, and guilt at his own inability to grant Yoda’s wish of becoming a Padawan. Slowly, his arm lowered. “Yoda,” he said quietly, “you don’t need to worry about impressing anyone. Every single Knight and Master in the Order knows about your talents.”

There was silence for a moment. “Then, why chosen, have I not been?”

Kooz met Yoda’s gaze. His face and voice were both screaming “what’s wrong with me?”. Kooz had to think for a moment. He knew why he wouldn’t take Yoda as his Padawan, but what was keeping the others? Why, Kooz thought, if I had legs, I’d train that kid in a heartbeat!

A scene from his recent past suddenly flashed through his mind. Master Vich had just handed him the un-graded copy of Yoda’s writing assignment. Upon reading the name, he had immediately began to say that Yoda needed to be trained by a more qualified Jedi.

I would probably just hold the kid back.

The answer to Yoda’s question suddenly became clear. “Perhaps,” he said quietly, “they feel they would be too inadequate to teach you.”

The room was quiet for awhile. “Taught me, you have,” Yoda said, his voice almost reverent in tone.

Oh, great. “Yoda,” he explained, “look, I’d be more than happy to take you as my Padawan, but I can’t.”

“Why not?”

Kooz sighed out of frustration. “Well you’re a smart kid, look at me!”

“I am.”

As Kooz met Yoda’s gaze, he again felt as if he’d been slapped. The alien’s eyes were sincere and a bit stubborn.

“Know what I see, do you?”

Kooz suddenly realized that for a split second, he’d let his own insecurities boil to the surface. In his heart, he had always thought himself to be inferior to the other Masters, and even most of the Knights, just because of his inability to go on missions. Can’t believe I’m about to be lectured by a kid, he thought with a sigh.

“The only person who reached out to me, I see. The person who taught me that matter, appearances do not, I see. The person who-”

“Alright, alright, fine, I get it.” Kooz flopped onto his back and rubbed his eyes. “Yoda, you have to understand something. If I take you as my Padawan, you won’t be able to go on any missions, and that’s where much of a Jedi’s training takes place.”

“What about you?”

Kooz sent him a puzzled look. “Whatd’ya mean?”

“When a Padawan, you were, go on missions, did you?”

He shook his head. “Nope.”

“And yet, a Jedi Master, you are.”

Kooz opened his mouth to say something, but the words never came. He lay there for a moment, trying to come up with a valid argument, but for some reason he was at a complete loss for words. Finally he exhaled and cleared his mind. “What were you dreaming about?”

It took Yoda a moment to shift his train of thought to the new subject. “My life. My future, I mean.”

Kooz turned his head to face him. “Really?”

Yoda nodded. “Going to live for a very long time, I am.”

“How long, do you think?”

There was a short pause. “Long enough to outlive a few generations of Jedi,” he said quietly.

Kooz turned his head back to face the ceiling, closed his eyes, and let out a meditative breath. What do I do, Kooz thought helplessly. What in the Force should I do…

The room was silent for a very long time. After about 15 minutes, the presence of Master Vich drew near, and the door opened. “I thought I told you to call me when he woke up,” she teased.

“I knew you’d be coming anyway,” he teased back. “Besides, he hasn’t been up for that long.”

Master Vich chuckled, then smiled. “Why don’t you go get something to eat? I’ll stay here with him, you’ve been here plenty long enough.”

Master Kooz was quiet for a moment. When he did speak, his voice was as if he was stating something as trivial as the time of day.

“I’m not going anywhere without my Padawan.”

Glad to be of help with the plot bunnies, Alasse! mischief With a ending like this, the story screams for a sequel.

It's no wonder Yoda took such an interest in Obi-Wan as an initiate. They have very similar backgrounds in trying to find a master. Wonderful story! applause Very heartwarming and emotional. hugs

I'd love to read more of Yoda's adventures with his new master. Please p.m. me when you post the new story.

I've finally caught up with this wonderful story. happy

Yoda could somehow feel that this had all been rehearsed. “Every single year,” a brown-haired human boy said, “you win this tournament. You never even give us a chance to fight back. It’s not fair that none of us get a chance to show our true skills and abilities. So, this year,” he said as all the lightsabers in the room ignited, “we’ve decided to make sure that we get that chance!”

That's so not cool!

He looked into Yoda’s eyes. “What happened here?” he asked, his voice grand, warm, stern, and soft all at once.

Unable to speak, Yoda responded with a thought. Attacked, I was…

The world went black.

Poor Yoda!

Yay! Yoda finally has a master, how wonderful. grin

Fantastic updates! applause applause
