Chapter 1

The Jedi Temple stood proud within the cityscape of Coruscant. It’s majestic presence exuded calmness and wisdom over the populous of the vast planet. It’s five gigantic spires stood out amongst the cityscape, and it was one of the wonders of Coruscant. It was originally built on the side of a mountain that was strong in the Force. As the planet grew to be one giant city, so the temple was built upon as time went on. Until now, the subterranean levels were almost as vast as those above the surface. Nobody knew exactly how vast the temple was, apart from those that resided within its walls. It was rumoured that one could still see the original rock face that the first temple was built upon. But nobody was certain.

It’s design was specifically designed to channel the Force so that those who resided within the temple would be able to immerse themselves in it completely, and gain the wisdom that the Force had to offer.

The current temple had been built shortly after the time of Revan. After he destroyed the Jedi Training centre on Dantooine, it was decided that the Jedi would stay closer to the seat of the Republic, so that the senate would not have to count on weeks of messages to despatch the Jedi to settle the various disputes.

The gigantic base that was visible housed the various classrooms where the Jedi’s were trained in the mysteries of the Force, it also housed the Jedi as well, the base alone was well over 300 meters tall, and then there was the five spires.

The northen most spire contained the Jedi’s star fleet. They had a mixture of snub fighters, as well as long range vehicles for the longer journeys. It was in the Northen spire that the ships of the Jedi were kept in order.

The eastern spire housed the communications array. It was this that sent the various orders and memos to the Jedi who were scattered across the galaxy. It also housed the technicians that kept the array running, as well as housing the security logs and all the holo-cam feeds of the holo-cams that were scattered across the Temple.

The western spire held what was probably the most under used element of the Jedi temple, the tactical wing. There had not been a full scale war since the last Sith war. Yet the equipment was always kept up to date. One never knew when the Sith would return.

The southern spire housed the various stores that provided everything the Jedi may possibly need. The southern spire was not enough to contain everything, and so a turbolift system was built in so that the stocks could be obtained from the lower levels.

The central spire, was the jewel in the crown. The central spire was where the honoured Jedi Council would gather to meet, and to seek the will of the Force. It was here that great and terrible decisions would be made. Each of the spires surrounding it, channelled the Force so that it would be at its strongest at this point. It was hear, over the last millennia that the Jedi had seeked the will of the Force.

It was usually a place of tranquillity and calm as the Jedi meditated and called upon the Force for guidance.

Well it was, except for one young man.

A young sat quietly on his bed, as he carefully packed the meagre belongings he had in to his bag. He was a tall young man, with a crop of brown hair, shaved close to his head. His body bore a slender frame, but one only needed to look closely at the conditioning his body had been put through. His eyes were a pure deep blue, which exuded confidence and wisdom normally. But not today.

Tears streaked down the face of the young man as he turned to gather the remainder of his belongings. He looked lovingly at a photo of himself with his closest friends. Happy days indeed, when one didn’t worry about what was to come. One simply lived in the moment. He thought back to the time the photo was taken, and the circumstances that had the four of them smiling in that fashion. A small smile crept on to his lips as he remembered his friends, he shook his head as his emotions threatened to overcome him.

He carefully wrapped the photo within one of his tunics, and placed it with great love and care within his bag. The packing was almost complete. He sealed up his bag, and cast one last look at the dormitory that had been his home for the last thirteen cycles. His mind wandered to the happier times he’d enjoyed here. The vast Force driven pillow fights with his friends, the practical jokes he’d pulled on the various masters that came in. Tears now ran freely down the young man’s face. He could sense a presence come near him. His body tensed. This was not something he was going to enjoy.

“So Oafy-Wan, the Jedi have finally seen sense, and decided to send you to the Agri-Corps? Good riddance I say!” Standing behind him was the one person he’d hoped not to see. Bruck. They’d been rivals since day one. And he was never quite sure why. For some reason, they never got on.

Slowly the young man turned around, and with sadness in his eyes, he spoke. “I’m sorry we didn’t get along Bruck. I just want you to know that…” He never got to finish his sentence as Bruck chopped straight across him. “Save it you waste of space.” He said with a whole lot of venom behind his words. “I have no time for snivelling wimps like yourself. I’m just glad you’ll be gone.”

The words obviously hurt the young man, he simply closed his eyes, and called on the Force to calm him. Once he was sure that his emotions were in check, he spoke again. “I just wanted you to know that I never hated you Bruck, and I was hoping we’d be able to put our differences to one side some day. But I guess that’s not going to happen.” He said, his voice full of regret.

Bruck sneered at the young man, “No it isn’t, as you’re going where you belong you no good waste of blood and organs. Just go, and spare me your self righteous prattle.”

The young man looked at Bruck in the eyes, his own eyes displaying such a depth of sadness. Bruck tried to hold eye contact for as long as possible, but found he couldn’t. He had to turn away. The young man grabbed his bag and made for the door. As he walked past the young bully, he whispered, “Goodbye Bruck, and may the Force be with you.”

Bruck turned around, not seeming to hear or want to hear what the young man had said. “Just go Kenobi, you don’t belong here.” He said, his voice dripping with sarcasm and hatred.

Initiate Obi-Wan Kenobi made his way towards the hanger bay.

That Bruck is - is - so mean-spirited. I can't believe this type of bullying is allowed or unrecognized.

And Obi-Wan - whoa - mature attitude - despite everything.

Thanks for the feedback. I must confess that I don't know the details of what happened to Obi-Wan as a youngling, so there's going to be a lot of guessing involved. I hope you'll be around for the whole ride happy

Chapter 2
Grand Jedi Master Yoda stood at the hanger bay waiting patiently. He’d hoped to catch young Obi-Wan before he left. But he wasn’t all that sure the youngster would want to speak to him.

He was short in stature, with large pointed ears which were on the top sides of his head, and stretched out a little beyond his shoulders. He had two large eyes which seemed to take in every tiny detail. White wispy hair stuck out of the crown of his head. He leaved on a cane, apparently struggling to walk any great distance. This had lead many to underestimate Yoda, mainly because they didn’t think someone so small would be a threat against them. But Yoda had a powerful ally. The Force.

Some would consider him young, but truth be told he was well over eight hundred years old. And for nearly every year, he’d served the Jedi faithfully. It was a mystery where Yoda came from, and nobody dared asked. Neither did anyone know what species he was. But that was irrelevant.

His eyes scanned the hanger hoping to catch the youngster before he boarded the ship that would take him to Bandomeer. A few hours earlier, Yoda had a massive row with Qui-Gon Jinn over the young man. Yoda was adamant that it was the will of the Force that Qui-Gon be the young man’s master, whereas Qui-Gon was equally adamant that he would not take on another padawan learner. After their argument was over, Yoda went to his small room to meditate on what was said and the emotions behind what was said.

And now, here he was. Hoping that the Force had another answer other than the one he was given. Either that or he’d take matters in to his own hands.

His left ear twisted behind him as he could hear the gentle footsteps of another Jedi come behind him. Yoda didn’t turn around, as he knew exactly who it was.

“Did you manage to convince Qui-Gon?” the person asked, a weariness to his voice.

“Hmm, scared of the past Qui-Gon is.” Yoda answered, “allowing his fears to control him he is.” He finished.

The person stepped besides Yoda now, and sat down beside him so that they could be at eye level. He turned to the ancient Jedi Master, “But it’s the will of the Force that Obi-Wan becomes a Jedi.” He said, concern evident in his voice.

Yoda nodded, “true that is, but perhaps the wrong Master the Force has chosen for him.” Countered Yoda. Yoda now turned to face his companion.

Mace Windu was a powerful man. Not only in the Force, but his physical presence commanded respect from all who met him. His prowess in the Force was only second to Yoda, but still he held the respect and regard of both friend and enemy alike. A fierce warrior and brilliant diplomat. He was almost the ideal Jedi. Becoming a master at the age of twenty eight, which was unheard of in Jedi history due to his deep connection to the Force, and that couple with his gift of being able to see shatterpoints.

“So what are you going to do?” he asked gently. Yoda scratched his can across the floor as he thought for a moment. “Know that, I do not.” He answered, “but guide me, the Force will.”

Then their eyes were caught by the beacon of light that was Obi-Wan Kenobi. There was no denying that this young man was powerful in the Force, and despite many master’s misgivings, this young man’s aura exuded peace and calm. Yoda noted his eyes were red with unshed tears. And he truly felt sad for the young man. But then, something else caught his eye. A small group of teenagers stood a few paces back from Obi-Wan throwing jeers and insults at the young man. With Bruck Chunn leading the charge. Yoda looked back towards Obi-Wan; he knew that he’d not got on with Bruck Chunn at all, and had fully expected some reaction. But all he could sense from the young Jedi was peace, and acceptance.

He turned to Mace, “bring him to the council chambers you must at once.” He said as he hobbled off towards the Council Chambers. Mace didn’t have time to reply, Yoda had already gone.

Mace sighed quietly as he got himself off the floor, and started towards Obi-Wan and his “Fan Club”.

As Mace got closer he could hear some of the jibes that had been thrown at Obi-Wan.

“Good riddance Oafy-One, now you can do what you’re meant to do, feed us….”

“you’re no better than a gundark..”

“You’ll never be a Jedi, you’re too full of yourself, you should be…”

The insults stopped the minute they noticed a council member staring at them. Anger thinly veiled over his face. “He should be what?” His voice asked, with a deadly edge to it. When nobody answered, he took a step close, “Should be WHAT?” now it was the Councilor’s voice that spoke.

The youths faces dropped to the ground, suddenly finding a gap in the hanger floor very interesting indeed.

Mace turned towards Obi-Wan. “Initiate Kenobi, would you kindly come here.” He asked, his voice softened somewhat. The young man dutifully walked towards the Councilor and stood a respectful distance. Mace smiled at the young man, “wait here a moment would you?” he asked in a civil tone. Obi-Wan nodded.

His face turned towards the youths who were hoping by his tone with Obi-Wan that he was not going to be so strict with them. Their hopes soon faded with the look of thunder that was on his face.

“First and foremost. A Jedi NEVER gloats over the misfortune of others. I do not know who taught you this, but believe me when I tell you that your masters will hear of this, and if they will not discipline you, the I will.” He said, his voice carrying an edge that would cut through durasteel. “I am in half a mind to send all of YOU to the Agri-Corps to see how you would like it!” The youths faces blanched at the prospect. Mace noted their reactions and pressed the point home. “Just because somebody is sent to the Agri-Corps, they are still invaluable to the Jedi, if anything, they are even more so. Without their work, we wouldn’t have clothes to wear or food to eat. Not to mention the fact that they have saved the lives of countless millions if not billions of lives.” Now the youngsters looked truly ashamed of themselves.

“Further more, you will apologise to Initiate Kenobi immediately, and trust me when I tell you that I’ll know if it’s sincere or not. And then you will go and meditate on what it means to be a Jedi, and the duties that entails. Do I make myself clear?” his tone brokered no room for argument. Each of them nodded.

A moment of silence reigned before Master Windu spoke again. “Well?” he said. His voice carrying authority.

Bruck was the first one to step forward, which threw Obi-Wan somewhat. He came up so that he’d be face to face with the young initiate.

“Obi-Wan,” he started, “I’m sorry for what I’ve said to you. I know we’ve not always got on, but what you said earlier really got me thinking.” He paused for a moment before carrying on. “what I’ve said about you and to you is wrong. I accept that I alone am responsible for my actions, and for that I’m sincerely sorry. I only hope that one day you’ll find it within yourself, and the will of the Force to forgive me.” He looked at Obi-Wan, his eyes earnest. Obi-Wan glanced towards Master Windu, who nodded his head fractionally to inform Obi-Wan that Bruck meant what he said.

Obi-Wan in turn looked at Bruck and placed on hand on his shoulder. Bruck flinched out of habit, but tried to still himself as Obi-Wan spoke. “Bruck, we are Jedi, wherever we may be, be it a Jedi Knight, or serving with the Agri-Corps, we are chosen by the will of the Force, and that makes us brothers. I don’t forgive you Bruck, because there’s nothing to forgive. Any anger I had had towards you left me as I walked to the hanger. I only hope you can forgive me for harbouring such anger against you.”

Mace Windu was taken aback at the honesty of young Kenobi’s words, as were all of those who heard it. This young man who many rejected due to having too much anger. But Mace had now seen him in a totally different light.

One by one the others came forward to apologise to Obi-Wan too, which pleased Mace. He saw new bonds forming between them. Each of them speaking from the heart. Eventually small laughter broke out among them. Even in the depths of pain, joy could be found. Mace always found it amazing how someone could laugh in hindsight at the things that happened to them when they were younger.

He stepped over towards the youngsters. “Gentlemen.” He said, his voice somewhat softer now. “I thank you for speaking from your hearts” he looked at Bruck and his gang as he said this. “I hope this has given you an insight in to what it means to be a Jedi?” he asked, his left eyebrow lifting upwards. Each of the youngsters nodded. Mace seemed satisfied. “Good, you will now go and report to your masters about what you’ve done, and they’ll decide on how to discipline you. Dismissed.”

Each of the youngsters bowed to the Jedi Master and departed quietly. Bruck turned to look at Obi-Wan. Silence hung in the air for a few moments, Bruck apparently trying to find the words to say. After a few moments, he did. “May the Force be with you Obi-Wan.” Obi-Wan bowed his head in acknowledgement of Brucks words, “and may the Force be with you Bruck.” Obi-Wan replied.

Mace waited until the youngsters had left the hanger before he turned to Obi-Wan. “Initiate Kenobi.” He said, immediately Obi-Wan stiffened, almost standing to attention as he was addressed by the leading member of the Jedi Council. “Master Yoda has requested your presence in the council chambers. If you’d follow me?” Mace asked, as he extended his hand towards the turbo lift encouraging young Kenobi to take the lead.

A myriad of thoughts when through Obi-Wan’s head as they headed over. A large rumbling noise drew his attention back to the hanger, as the transport to Bandomeer left the hanger. What do they want with me now? he thought to himself quietly.

I loved how Mace handled that; I'm going to love him in this story. That's the Mace of my fanfiction world.

For someone not familiar with JA you've picked up a LOT from the boards. Until the ending, that is.

I'm glad Mace made those bullies apologize to Obi-Wan, all those things they were saying were so horrible! cry

Poor Obi-Wan, how could they be sending him away?! cry

Actually, since the transport to Bandomeer left without him, maybe they're not sending him away. I wonder what the Council is going to say to him? thinking

All I can say, is that Obi-Wan's future is going to be massively different to what it was in the films. That is all I can say for now.

==========================

Well, chapter 3 is here. Please read and review and let me know what you think. And I'd like to say a special hello to the lurkers out there. You know who you are happy Feel free to comment. We don't bite, I promise...

Chapter 3

The journey to the Council chamber was done in silence. Mace noted that Obi-Wan radiated nervousness. He could understand that the boy was nervous. He looked at the young initiate and it was though he’d seen him for the first time. Yes, there was sadness there, and possibly fear. But Mace was amazed at how the Force positively shone brightly through Obi-Wan. The Force flowed through him easily, enveloping him in its warmth and love.

This boy MUST be trained he thought to himself. He cast his mind back to the blazing row they had with Qui-Gon. Yoda adamant that it was the will of the Force that Qui-Gon train the boy, and Qui-Gon equally determined that he wouldn’t train him. It was one of those rare times that he’d seen Yoda loose his temper. “Another Xanatos, this boy is not.” Yoda said, furiously stamping his cane on the floor so hard it actually dented the marble floor of the council chamber. Mace recalled the stunned silence that followed, and then Qui-Gon simply stormed out. Neither Master knew where he went. And neither were particularly bothered about it.

The lift doors finally opened, and Mace motioned Obi-Wan to step forward. They stood at the council doors. Waiting to be let in.

Obi-Wan peered through the doors to see that the entire council had been assembled. A lump of fear formed in his throat. What have I done? he thought to himself. Was this something to do with what happened with Bruck earlier? No! he thought to himself, Master Windu put a stop to that… He noticed that his palms were becoming sweaty, and he dried them on his tunic. Looking at his clothes, he quickly straightened them out as much as he could. He jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. “Relax initiate Kenobi, before you sprain something.” Mace said quietly, his voice carrying a hint of humour. He closed his eyes, and called upon the Force to calm him, taking several deep breaths, and holding them, then trying to exhale his anxiety with each breath out. But for some reason it did not help.

The doors opened, and his name was called. Obi-Wan Kenobi stepped in to face whatever it was the council was about to discuss.

He stood in the centre of the giant seal that was placed on the floor, his feet slightly shoulder width apart. He tried to calm himself but to no avail. And he was sure that every master in the room could sense his unease about being in the council chamber. He could sense each of them looking at him, probing him; which only served to make young Obi-Wan even more nervous.

Mace took his seat next to Yoda, as the small master got the meeting under way.

“Initiate Kenobi, know you do why called here you have been?” Yoda asked gently. Obi-Wan was silent for a moment as he racked his brains to try and find out why he’d been called.

“No master” he answered, almost surprised at the eveness of his voice, “I thought I was to be sent to Bandomeer to work with the Agri-Corps.”

Yoda nodded as he weighed up the young lad’s words. “Not chosen you, any masters have?” he enquired further. Yoda knew this was a sore point for Obi-Wan. But no anger or bitternes was sensed by the ancient Jedi Master, rather it was acceptance.

Obi-Wan shook his head quietly, his sadness clear for all to sense and see. “No master, it would seem that I’m too dangerous to be trained.”

A ripple went through the Council chambers at this. Each of them looked at Obi-Wan and found that he truly believed that he was too dangerous to be trained.

“And told you that, who did?” Yoda asked gently. Already knowing the answer.

“Master Qui-Gon sir”. The sharp intake of breath indicated that many within the council chambers were shocked at the revelation. Normal beings would have started to scream and shout and demand justice be served for saying such a thing to a young man. But these were Jedi. They released their shock and anger in to the Force, and thus allowed themselves the ability to focus on the young man that stood before them.

Obi-Wan kept his eyes to the floor. Not daring to make eye-contact with any of the masters. He was still fearful of what was about to come.

After a few moments of silence, Yoda spoke. “Hmmpf, wrong he is. Stubborn he is as well. A master you WILL have Obi-Wan.” It was rare for Yoda to use the child’s first name, especially in the council chambers. And this was not lost on any of the Jedi that sat in the circle of twelve seats.

Obi-Wan looked up, but it wasn’t hope that was in his eyes. But trepidation. He wasn’t sure who’d take him on as their padawan. Yoda threw the question open to the floor. “Who will train this young man, and guide him on the path of the Jedi?”

He cast his eyes around the council chamber. Reaching out with the Force, he could see each Jedi seek the Force for answers.

Obi-Wan reached out with the Force. He expected each master to give a quick refusal, but was surprised at the fact that each master was seriously considering taking him on as their padawan learner. He could sense each of them gently prodding against his shields. So he chose to lower them completely. He sensed the surprise the masters had at his openness before them. He sensed them sifting through every memory, every prank ever pulled. His face blushed as Plo Koon came across one particular practical joke that the young man pulled on him, involving a bucket of water. But Obi-Wan felt no consternation from the Jedi Master, but rather gentle amusement.

This continued for quite a while before a voice finally spoke out. “I will take him.” He stood up to stand behind Obi-Wan, placing his hands on his shoulders. Looking around the council chambers. “I take Obi-Wan Kenobi as my padawan learner.”

A wide and beaming smile graced Yoda’s craggy face. A good master he will be thought Yoda quietly to himself. Yoda and the rest of the council bowed their heads in respect to the master. Yoda looked towards Obi-Wan. “Do you accept young Kenobi?”

Obi-Wan thought for a moment, trying to slow down his speeding brain. He reached out with the Force. Seeking it’s blessing to say yes. A large sense of peace came over him, as he smiled. “I accept master Yoda.”

The smile grew wider, “then the bonding ceremony we shall perform at once.”
