Friends, Until
We were friends. Only friends.
Until.
I’d never known how erotic a thumb across lips could be. We’d had all the lectures and the classes. We knew Jedi weren’t encouraged to explore the physical, and certainly one got the sense that if one did, one shouldn’t enjoy it.
Yet if one could take simple pleasure in the sweet explosion of ripe Kandara fruit within one’s mouth when one was hungry, or the relaxation of slipping into Slumber’s arms when one was tired, why could one not take simple pleasure when other appetites asked to be sated?
The past and the present blurred together in this moment that it seemed I had waited all my life for.
I’d known Qui-Gon for years.
His first steps on unsteady legs were to me. My first were to him.
His discovery of the differences between the sexes brings me to laughter at the memory, though at the time my reaction was rather different.
“I’m a boy; look at what I’ve got.” He said it so importantly, like he’d discovered the mystery of life itself. “You don’t have one.”
Didn’t I? If not, I wanted one, too. I looked - and I didn’t. Qui, dear Qui, said because boys had them didn’t mean anything. It just meant I was a girl. I wanted to cry, then, but I was impressed that he would show it to me. Years later I’d thought about showing him what I now had and he didn’t – but one does not do that at that age. Innocence belongs to the young.
He gave me my first kiss when he was five. A boyish smack on the check followed by a giggle. I wanted to hit him. A boy – ick. Instead, I giggled back.
I went past that “boys are ick” stage rather quickly.
He taught me to play pranks on the crèche-masters and initiate masters. I taught him not to play tricks on Master Yoda.
He encouraged me to speak up more often, to not hang back. I tutored him in the one class he couldn’t quite master.
He was my best friend, and I was his. Qui and Tahl, Tahl and Qui. Where one was, so was the other.
We were best friends. We dared each other to do more and to be more and in some ways that prepared us for the demands our masters put on us when we were initiates no longer, but moving forward on the Jedi path. We didn’t spend as much time together as padawans. Life had changed.
Our friendship hadn’t. We were still best friends.
Qui-Gon grew. The boy with the promise of height and breadth turned into a young man of height and breadth. Childish innocence and childish joy, my Qui, was still there inside of him, but both had slid aside, to make room for determination and duty. The boy was becoming a man, whenever time between missions allowed us time together.
I, too, had changed, but it is harder to see change in yourself than in others.
Several years passed, several years of hellos and goodbyes. Several years with just moments to relive the past – never a favorite pastime of Qui's – and several moments to look forward to the future – again, something not a concern of Qui’s. Most of our moments were spent, as always, in that moment, just being together and talking.
Just being Qui and Tahl, Tahl and Qui, best friends together again.
We talked, just once, about being padawans and our masters – the personal side of that.
We had just finished sparring. It was becoming routine, and a shorter one each time. I lost. Under Master Dooku, Qui-Gon was becoming quite a proficient fighter. I’d already heard speculation that he might become one of the Order’s best swordsmen in a few more years.
We’d met after showering and now sat in a corner of the meal hall. Qui sat with his elbows on the table, damp hair hanging in his blue eyes as we spoke.
“Tahl, I see you haven’t lost your joy in life.” He sounded almost sad, as if he saw in me something he was losing within himself.
“How could I, Qui, for if ever I lost it, it would be found upon your return home.” I told him the simple truth. In his presence there was no tiredness, no hunger, and no duty – there was friendship and a heart made lighter just by his being there.
I could see shadows in his eyes. “Master Dooku?” I ventured. It had to be hard for Qui. I will never understand why Master Dooku asked - or Qui-Gon accepted - the offer that the two become master and padawan. Other than the joy of the fight, they were not alike.
My Qui – free spirited. There was no moment he did not smile, if just in the Force.
Master Dooku – controlled. Stern beyond my imagination – I doubt he ever smiled.
“You see me too well,” he admitted. “It’s not just Master Dooku. It’s true we don’t see eye to eye on the Force, and keeping my mouth shut like a good padawan when the Force is whispering something contrary to what my master has determined to be the best course of action is more difficult than I ever thought.”
“Than what? Why did you accept Master Dooku as your master – you had other offers, didn’t you?”
“It seemed the right thing at the moment.” The strain eased a little, with that said. “Truly, it has been a difficult path, but I have learned much from Master Dooku I would not have learned from another.”
Though we spoke more, he said little more. No more, ever, would he say.
More years passed. More years of hellos and goodbyes, more years of sparring and more years of me losing. More years as we understood the perils and temptations of the path we choose and the sacrifices we might have to make.
But always, there was us. Qui and Tahl, Tahl and Qui. Best friends, still.
Now we were united again, time between missions coinciding at the Temple. We were no longer younglings. We were becoming adults; we were adults to the Order. Everything had changed and nothing had.
We were still best friends.
“What are you thinking, Qui?” We were standing on one of the Temple balconies, studying the sunset. I turned my head to study his face, now far above mine. Qui was a man now, the promise fulfilled.
He turned, but instead of speaking, he drew his thumb along my lips leaving a tingle that I’d never experienced. Without a word, he lowered his head to mine – and kissed me.
This was not a five-year-old’s kiss. It wasn’t really much more than that either, at first; it was gentle but as time passed and our lips did not part, it deepened. Somehow my hands were in his hair as his hands were on my cheeks.
We stood, locked together, until eternity ended, or our need to breathe took precedence.
If ever there was a sense of rightness about any course of action, it was then. Oh, I know, if I confessed all this to another, I would hear that I was swept away by youth, that I had been unwise.
But I, too, had a generous helping of Living Force sensitivity. That urge to live in the moment now urged me on, as it had Qui. My Qui. I knew that tonight he would be mine and I his.
Jedi do not know passion
. Whoever came up with that had never been kissed by Qui.
I knew then that I would not embrace celibacy as the path to knowledge of the Force. I chose another path; I would embrace another instead. Qui was my best friend and there was no question of love or of attachment.
“Yes.” I answered the question he hadn’t even asked. “Oh, yes, Qui.”
His arms tightened around me as mine around him. The Living Force surged between us; responding to us, or we calling upon it; perhaps both. Together we were bound, Qui and Tahl, Tahl and Qui. Best friends.
Neither of us were so overcome that we lost all sense of propriety.
“My shields, yours?” I ventured, my head lying against his chest, face upturned to his. In pure fascination, I traced his lips with a finger, feeling the tremors through us both.
Qui, my Qui, nodded in understanding. It would be my first time, and it would be glorious, but I didn’t want to broadcast it to the Temple. How could I not, when Qui would be in my arms and I his?
“I know a place,” he said, a smile playing over his face. “It will also give us both a chance to catch our breath – to rethink this.” He took my hand in his and kissed it, a promise of more to come, before he dropped it, and side by side, we walked through the hallways.
“The Healers Ward?”
He turned to me and gestured me forward. “Sections are Force-dampened.”
I know a smile played over my face at that. I was young, but old enough. I was inexperienced, but I wasn’t sheltered. “So one can moan to one’s heart content?”
“I’d rather you moan to my touch.” With that, Qui turned me around and wrapped me in his arms. I could feel his heart thumping and see the pulse in his throat beating. I couldn’t help it, I moaned, and the most glorious smile I’d ever seen broke over his face.
“You’ve done this before.” He shook his head, laughing in denial. “But you knew where to go – you know just exactly how to make me feel comfortable – to want this.”
“I listen to the Force,” he said with a little laugh, a throaty growl. “Live in the moment and it will guide us both.”
I remembered that moment of discovery years ago, of a boy’s excitement and a young lady’s inability to reciprocate – at least at that time. Yes, live in the present, but don’t be afraid to remember the past.
“I have something to show you,” I whispered as my hands slipped my tunic over my head and his eyes widened as his hands reached to caress me. “Now show me what you've got."

Aha! Qui-Gon and Tahl learning how to play doctor when they're little and, uh, more advanced activities when they're older. Very sweet.

Lovely, those two are meant for each other. And you can see where Obi-Wan had his humor from.

This was great. I loved the way they grew into each other. I also liked that Qui wasn't happy with Dooku but that he accepted it.
The last part was quite... hot.
Lovely job.

That was sunning!
I loved the childish innocence maturing into the deep love of a true, good friend.
And it was nice to see Qui-Gon let down his guard and...allow himself to know passion. At least for once.
Great job on this

Just found this while brousing through the June New Stories index. Must have missed it the first time round.
And well...
Loved every second of it! It's so well written and the way Tahl and Qui are together just makes your heart bleed all the more when you remember Tahl's altimate fate.
His first steps on unsteady legs were to me. My first were to him
.
That grabbed my heart right there and then.
He was my best friend, and I was his. Qui and Tahl, Tahl and Qui. Where one was, so was the other.
Just being Qui and Tahl, Tahl and Qui, best friends together again.
But always, there was us. Qui and Tahl, Tahl and Qui. Best friends, still
. It was so beautiful and poignant the way you threaded these lines through the story. You amaze me with your talent!
Jedi do not know passion. Whoever came up with that had never been kissed by Qui.
And finally...
“I have something to show you,” I whispered as my hands slipped my tunic over my head and his eyes widened as his hands reached to caress me. “Now show me what you've got."
Phew... (fans self) Hot stuff? You got that bit right!
Wonderful, wonderful work
Valairy
as always.

It was so beautiful and poignant the way you threaded these lines through the story.
That was intentional, as I'm sure you realized.

Oh, so beautiful, this slow growing of their relationship from best of friends to much more. It shows such a rich relationship and it felt so right when Qui-Gon asked - and how he asked, his thumb over Tahl's lips, then the kiss. And Tahl's response ... they are so in tune. Loved how you ended it, 'I have to show you something', bringing it back full circle to their childhood friendship.
And it made me very, very sad as well, sad that the Jedi would frown upon something as natural and beautiful as what they had.
(by the way, loved the little bit of Qui-Gon and Dooku thrown in and how he never talked about it again, not even with Tahl)
