Title: Almost a Man
Author: VaderLVR64
Characters: OCs (Sian Ny and Zared Sedaya)
Notes: I’ve been contemplating this new character for a while. I’ve written a lot about Sian and I’ve written a bit about his Padawan. But what about Sian’s Master? He’s been missing in the equation. This will be a series of vignettes exploring the relationship between Sian and his Master.
Almost a Man
The man was remarkably ugly. The kind of ugly that drew second, and even third, glances. The sort of ugly that made small children cry.
Sian stared at him, wondering how he had gotten the fearsome scar that twisted the left side of his face. One brown eye blinked back at Sian, and in spite of his momentary shyness, Sian found himself comfortable in the man’s presence.
“Hello,” Sian said quietly.
Laughter seemed to light the brown eye, and the man’s mouth pulled up in a smile. Somehow, the smile transformed him, allowing something of his heart to shine through past the disconcerting face. Sian grinned back.
“Here,” the man said. “You’ve got something on your face.” One huge hand moved toward Sian and he felt the rough texture of a heavily callused hand wiping at something. The hand pulled back, a dark smudge on the thick fingers. The man studied the smudge. “Chocolate if my guess is right.”
Wiping at his face, just in case the man had not gotten it all, Sian nodded. “I snuck it from the kitchens,” he confessed before he considered the dangers of such an honest reply. He glanced up at the Master from beneath thick lashes, trying to assess his expression. The Master smiled and winked at Sian.
At eleven years old, Sian was almost as tall as the man was. Astonishingly well muscled, the man’s body was solid and intimidating, but he was not tall. His shoulders were broad, his chest a wide expanse beneath his tunics, and his thighs were as thick as tree trunks, straining at his leggings in places. Paired with the ravaged face, Sian could see why some of the initiates had dubbed him “The Beast.” Now, however, Sian thought it particularly unkind.
“What’s your name, little one?” the Master asked.
“Sian Ny,” he replied. He frowned at the man. “What’s your name?” He could hardly call him “The Beast” he thought.
“I’m Zarad Sedaya,” the Master replied. “But you can call me Zed.”
Sian considered the offer for a moment and then finally shook his head. “I don’t think I’m supposed to do that,” he murmured.
Zed rubbed at his chin, a heavy ridge of bone that matched brow above. “That’s probably true,” he replied. He smiled at Sian. “A big stickler for the rules are you?” He wiped his hands on his leggings, and Sian saw a bit of chocolate was left behind. The boy blushed, because it was obvious he was not one to follow every rule. He wondered if Zed thought he was being rude, refusing his offer to call him by his first name.
“Not usually,” Sian answered with honesty. He leaned in close and confided, “But I think I’ve driven Master Yoda to his breaking point.” Sian shrugged. “I decided it might be better to give him a rest. Even Jedi Masters can lose their tempers,” he confided quietly. “So I’m trying to be on my best behavior for the next few days.”
“A few days?” Zed asked with amusement. “Oh, that’ll be a test of your will power for sure, won’t it?”
Sian sighed heavily. “It’s gonna be torture,” he replied mournfully. Then he straightened his shoulders and stuck out his chest. “But I can do it. I know I can.”
Zed nodded solemnly, folding his massive arms over his even bigger chest. “I’m quite sure you can,” he said. “You’ve got the look of a man of uncommon determination about you.”
Smiling happily at that thought, Sian forgot all about the prank he had been planning to pull on that prissy Jocasta Nu. For some reason, he did not want this strange looking man to think less of him. And he was a man…well, almost. Maybe it was time to leave pranks behind and concentrate on being a better Jedi. Then he thought of the look on Jocasta’s face and thought that maybe he had a few more years of trickery ahead.
Zed patted Sian on the shoulder and the boy’s knees almost buckled beneath the force of it. “I was just going to get something to eat at a little diner I know near here,” Zed said. “Would you like to come with me? I can comm the crèche master and tell her that you’re with me. I’m sure she won’t mind.”
Sian Ny was thrilled at the idea of leaving the confines of the Temple. Like most of his age-mates, he was starting to become more concerned over being chosen as a Padawan, but unlike the others, what he was looking forward to most was traveling the galaxy. The saber was interesting, but could not compare to the lure of the vast universe. His boring studies had only made him hungrier to see more of what waited for him out there. He had a feeling that Master Zed had seen a lot, and Sian had a dozen questions already circling in his thoughts.
“I’d like that,” Sian replied.
He watched as Master Zed quickly contacted the crèche, and Sian was not surprised to hear the note of relief in Master Rila’s voice when she found out that he would not be her responsibility for a while. He was rather afraid he had been somewhat trying lately.
“Come on, little one,’ Zed said, pocketing his comm and adjusting his cloak. “Let’s get you out of here before you explode into mischief.”
Sian bit his lip, wondering how the man could read him so easily. Soon, however, they were walking through the main doors of the Temple and down the steps that led to freedom. Asking questions in a rapid-fire fashion, he was pleasantly surprised to find that Master Zed answered them patiently, never seeming tired of his endless curiosity. In contrast to his rather brutish appearance, it was clear to Sian that Zed was kind and gentle, with an easy sense of humor that Sian could appreciate.
At last, they arrived at the diner and Sian slid into a booth and looked around him with wide eyes. There were many variety of beings around him, but he was used to that from living in the Temple. What interested him was that none of them bore any resemblance to a Jedi. They looked rough and disreputable, some of them shooting furtive and angry glances at Master Zed, who seemed oblivious to their dislike. Their waitress was rude, rolling her eyes when Master Zed told her that Sian would need a moment to read the menu, and flouncing off in anger. Their table was slightly dirty and Sian felt his feet sticking to the floor. From somewhere in the kitchen area, a foul odor drifted out and made Sian’s eyes water.
He loved the diner instantly.
Master Zed did not talk while they waited for their food, instead he let Sian observe those around them. Every now and then, Sian looked up to see Zed smiling slightly. Then the waitress brought the food and it smelled amazing, much to Sian’s surprise.
“Well eat up, boy!” Zed commanded. “It may smell like hell in here, but the food is sheer paradise.” He took a healthy bite of his own and grinned at Sian.
Master Zed was right, the food was superb and Sian gobbled it up without further hesitation. When at last his belly was full, he sat back and watched as Zed finished off a second meal without apparent difficulty. Finally, Zed leaned back and patted his belly. “Now that’s a meal a man can live on,” he sighed happily.
Leaning forward, Master Zed tilted his head and studied Sian. “You’re of an age to find yourself a Master now, aren’t you, young Sian?”
Sian nodded, wondering where this was going.
Master Zed just smiled however, and nodded his head. “Good to know, my boy, good to know.”

Oh, this is great, seeing Sian as a youth. Of course, he'd need a master with lots of patience.
Okay i gotta go back to work.

I love the Master. He'd make a great match with Sian. I loved the description of him, scary and yet so gentle.
Good job.
I must admit I've been lurking on your other story with Sian. It's been hard to keep up with things lately.

Awww...young Sian is just as lovable as old Sian
Of course, considering Sian's ego, I probably should have said older
I loved how he met his eventual Master and the banter between the two was wonderful.
I think I’ve driven Master Yoda to his breaking point.” Sian shrugged. “I decided it might be better to give him a rest.
Is that why Yoda started using the gimer stick?
Wonderful job on this and I look forward to more
