Title: Hold Your Head High
Author(s): JalendaviLady
Timeframe: pre-TPM, a few years before Anakin Skywalker is born
Characters: OCs
Genre: Vignette
Summary: A young Force-sensitive learns something about where he came from, and comes to understand that not being raised by one's birth parents isn't so bad after all.
Notes: This is part of an AU series I was working on a few years back. It occurs a few years after Honor To Us All. Other vignettes and larger pieces in this series are listed in my profile.

I'm writing this vignette in response to a title suggestion in DarthIshtar's “What's In A Name?” challenge thread and to the current “Essential Guide to OCs” challenge.

...

It had been two years since Saman had come to Calica, two years since the Rajan, leader of a people who spread from one end of the galaxy to the other, had adopted him.

He had come from the streets of Coruscant. He had been thrown away at three hours old, and if it hadn't been for Vernu's garbage diving he would have died before his first day had gone by. Now, he was the second of two adopted heirs of one of the most powerful beings in the galaxy, even if the people hadn't shown themselves beyond casual individual contact for millennia.

Quite a change, for a street rat who had spent the earliest bits of his childhood scrounging in hawkbat nests for eggs.

He was walking through Bar Street today. That was where most of the gossip and politics of the city took place. Even if Hannar was in line before him, Saman still needed to learn so much.

He was walking past the sign for the Crossed Sabers Inn when he heard one of the retired Palace guards whisper to another “I don't understand why Rajan Cadfaelus keeps adopting the children of Dark Ones. He has the right to Chose them of course, and with Rajana Marteana's situation he needs to Chose someone, but why the offspring of Dark Ones?”

Dark Ones?

Saman darted into an alley and crouched behind a crate of Alderaani wine someone had imported from the lands above.

He and Hannar, descended from Dark Ones? He knew Hannar had run away from his blood family when he was eleven, just a little older than Saman was now and not that many months before he'd been adopted himself, but Dark Ones? Twisted Force-sensitives? Both of them?

He'd been thrown away, hadn't he? Under a half-day old? And Vernu didn't search low-class dumpsters. Whoever his parents had been, they hadn't been forced to have him.

But Dark Ones?

He wandered back towards the Palace.

...

He was hiding under the bench beside the garden fountain when his adoptive father found him.

“Saman, that cannot be comfortable.”

The Rajan would have already known it wasn't. That was part of being the Rajan, a Force connection to the people, and Saman was part of the people now.

He stared at the fountain. What had been said in the bar made too much sense.

“Saman? My Chosen son, child I Chose to let into my life, what is bothering you so?”

“Someone at a bar said... something about my family.”

“Your birth family?”

He nodded.

Cadfaelus got on the ground next to him and wrapped his right arm around his shoulders. “And what did this person say?”

“That I'm... that I'm the child of a Dark One.”

A squeeze.

“It's true?” His voice was breaking now from the tears he was trying to hold in.

“Yes. And I knew.”

“You knew?”

“A Force-sensitive, in a dumpster, with the way the Jedi in the lands above seek out Force-sensitive children? There are very few other explanations.”

“Oh.”

“Saman, it doesn't matter to me. You're becoming a remarkable young man, and so has your brother.”

“Hannar's always been that way.”

“Believe it or not, he wasn't. At first, he was just remarkable for having found a way down here. Fell out of a Palace tree and at my feet.”

Saman smiled at the familiar story.

Another firm squeeze. “I saw a little of him in your face when I first met you, after deWarren told me he had a streetwise Force-sensitive within the area his clan travels.”

Saman blinked. “We're... sons of the same Dark One?”

“That he ran away from, yes, as far as anyone can tell.” Cadfaelus kissed his hair. “And Hannar says his mother might have had a child your age without his being able to remember, your ages are close enough.”

“So I missed the stuff that made him run away?”

“And went through another path of pains, but yes.”

He thought for a moment. “Hannar knows?”

“Yes. We all wanted to spare you this, as long as we could. Marte knows as well.” They both stood, and Cadfaelus held him close again. “Any parent would want to spare a child such knowledge, Chosen or born into the family. And any family worth being called such would be proud to call you kin.”

They stood there for a moment, secure in the private gardens of the Rajan's palace.

“Now, I think we have a little while before lunch. We've both gotten dirt on our robes.”

Saman kept standing there.

“Son, go change for the meal.”

He dashed into the palace and bounded up the stairs and ramps that wound through the rock face it was built into.

Hannar's quarter's were on the way to Saman's room, and Hannar was in them.

Saman ran towards him, crashing into his brother's chest.

“Hey!” Hannar laughed. “What's that for?”

Saman cuddled against him. “I know we're brothers.”

Hannar was holding painfully close a moment later. Saman thought he was crying. “Hannar...?”

“You never have to worry about him, little brother. I'll keep you safe. The Rajan will keep us safe...”

“I'm not worried about that! We're brothers!” There was something about having blood family, even when adoptive family was more than enough to be content.

Hannar shook his head. “You should be worried.” He sighed. “But I'm glad you don't need to understand why.” He pushed Saman away a little. “Go get cleaned up before lunch. You know he wants you to be learning manners now.”

Saman bounded off, farther into the palace, up into the safest core where the Rajan and his youngest family members dwelled.

He had a brother, and his adoptive father loved them in spite of where they came from.

And even with a Dark One for a parent, it wasn't like they were ever likely to cross paths, right?

Now I want to find out who his parents were. I don't suppose the Dark Ones have an exaggerated reputation?

"Dark One" would be the local term for a Dark-side Force-user of any tradition or degree of power. In this particular case, replacing it with the word "Sith" would be completely accurate - it's just not something Saman knows yet, and also not something that his brother is willing to tell him.

Aww, that was sweet. happy I'm glad Saman is happy with his adoptive family, and it sure looks like he's happy to know of a blood relative too. happy Hearing you're the son of a Dark One must be a pretty lousy thing to experience.

Hmm, did Rajan adopt them *because* they were Force-sensitive? If the position requires a Force connection, does he need heirs that can connect with the Force as well for when they take up that position?

Great job! applause

Wonderful vignette! applause I love how you portrayed such strong emotions but with just the right touch. Beautiful! Any chance you'll write more of this story?
