Raestro Trol swept his baggy brown Jedi robes out the way and retrieved his lightsaber. The glowing blue blade bounced a pair of ill-aimed blaster bolts into the ceiling and away from the suddenly panicking bar crowd. Bright orange sparks showered the fleeing stampede as a pair of glow-bulbs burst overhead.

Raestro anticipated the drunken Bith’s last attack, sending the final shot harmlessly into the rafters before rapidly closing to short range and slicing off the barrel of his blaster pistol.

With unsteady aim, the Bith threw what was left of his weapon at the Jedi, missing completely, only to whack some poor bystander in the head. The attacker wasted no time wondering if the distraction worked. A small whitish gray fist sailed towards Raestro’s face, but the Force had already warned him what was coming. After deflecting the blow, he used his quick hands to lock the sentient’s wrist and elbow joints. From the awkward angle of the other man’s shoulder, the Jedi knew that every time the Bith breathed, he put pressure on his joints causing major discomfort. This aggressor wasn’t going anywhere.

“He cheate—OW!” the Bith whined.

“I know,” the Jedi responded calmly. “I was coming to assist you, but it would seem you lost your temper.”

“….Oh.”

“You, sir, should stay where you are.” With his free hand, and without looking, he pointed directly across the table where another male was beginning to rise from his chair.

The other Bith had surprise and guilt plastered across his big black eyes and mouth. It didn’t take a Jedi to see the indecision playing across his features.

“I said sit!

The Bith sat.

Before Raestro could say anything more, four members of the Coruscant security forces were weaving their way through the sentients who hadn’t made it out of the dingy bar before the conflict had been resolved. Now, the remaining civilians were determinedly milling about and trying to get a good look, like curious idiots swarming a speeder-crash, wanting to see carnage.

“Master Jedi,” greeted the apparent leader—a dual-tusked Aqualish wearing traditional dark blue security forces garb. His stun baton was in his hand, ready to subdue anybody making a scene. “I am Larb Trachk. How can we assist?”

The human gave a nod, noting the rank on the leading officer’s collar. “Lieutenant.” He released the thoroughly subdued Bith and gave him a light shove in the security personnel’s direction. “This individual decided to take the law into his own hands. He can be charged with assault and attempted murder.”

“B..b..but he cheated!” stammered the Bith, as if it that was a valid excuse to shoot someone. The attacker was pointing towards his former tablemate.

With not-amused eyes, the Jedi looked at him. “I was getting to that part. Maybe you can learn some patience in your holding cell.”

Stun cuffs snicked shut over the Bith’s wrists. Larb was somewhat gentle in his shove, sending the Bith into the arms of another waiting security officer. Nobody paid attention to the whining drunkard’s ravings as he was carted out of eyeshot.

“As for you…” Raestro focused his serious glare on the other participant. “Did you modify the sabaac deck for personal gain?”

The Bith hesitated for a pair of heartbeats before nodding. “Yes I did.” With reluctance, he stood, placing his wrists together and walking towards the lieutenant.

“Thank you for cooperating,” Raestro told him. “I’m sure Mr. Trachk will be fair with you.”

The lieutenant nodded, understanding the Jedi’s meaning. “Come along then.” He pointed at the mostly destroyed blaster pistol on the floor. One of his underlings went and retrieved it for evidence.

Raestro made his voice loud enough to be heard by the entire bar. “Does anybody else want to cause trouble?”

The crowd laughed skittishly, nervous “No’s” echoing around him.

“Is anybody injured?”

“Here, Master Jedi,” said a concerned bartender, kneeling beside a human woman sitting on the floor with a big red bump growing on the side of her temple.

She looked more embarrassed than hurt, though the angry welt looked rather painful. She waved off their concern and tried to stand. “I’m fine, just wasn’t smart enough to duck the blaster after he threw it.”

Raestro gathered one of her arms and helped return her to her feet. She was very tall, barely a forehead shorter than he. Long, straight yellow hair floated free of any binding, reaching the middle of her back. She cut a very fine figure in her tight jumpsuit, with curves in all the right places. Considering blue eyes flickered over his face, widening with barely-muted surprise.

“Raestro? Is that you?”

Recognition dawned on him half a second later. “Meaghan?” He laughed in startlement before turning his attention back to the security team. “I think we’re all set here, thank you for your help, Larb.”

“My pleasure, Master Jedi. Let’s go.” With an arm motion, the other three officers followed the lieutenant out, carrying the two very-meek troublemakers out of the bar.

As the Jedi picked up the chair that had been knocked over in all the excitement, the bar patrons went back to their conversations, returning the large establishment to the din of hundreds of voices.

“Have a seat, Meaghan,” Raestro said, waving her towards the chair. “Barkeep, some ice please.”

“Coming right up.”

The three other sabacc players abandoned the table, practically fleeing from the Jedi.

“Thanks.” As he sat across from her, her blue eyes crinkled in amusement. “You’re not as shy as you used to be.”

Raestro laughed uproariously, remembering back about fifteen years when he had seen Meaghan for the first—-and until now--only time.

The Jedi had kept him sequestered with the other children as all very young Jedi initiates were. That was hard on him, as he was very soft spoken to begin with. Years later, after he had been chosen by a Master, he spent all of his time in a classroom or in the field, training, not yet understanding attraction. As romantic interludes were strictly forbidden, he had no experience on how to handle the situation at all.

When he and Meaghan’s paths had first crossed, they were in a small restaurant, not far from the Jedi Temple. He had just turned seventeen and was out on his own, wearing form-fitting civilian clothes for a rare day completely to himself, as off-duty as a Jedi ever could be.

He noticed her first, eyes taking in the attractive scenery of a very well put together young woman. Only a few seconds after filling his eyes, she saw him looking. After catching sight of him, she had come on rather strongly.

“Hey honey,” she had said as he stood patiently in line, trying to pretend he hadn’t been staring. “What are you doing all alone? Can I buy you a drink?”

Raestro was sure he had turned completely red from embarrassment. Though he didn’t respond--aside from furious blushing--she had persisted.

“You have an amazing body,” she continued. “Such broad shoulders and big arms.” She never touched him, but Raestro remembered her sizing him up like he was a nerf on its way to the slaughter, measuring him to the centimeter and weighing him within a few grams. “I’m Meaghan,” she had purred.

“Raestro,” he stammered, barely able to speak his own name. He remembered her eyes lighting up like glow-bulbs, warm with impure thoughts and seductive, transparent ulterior motives.

“Come sit with me, sweetness. I’d love to get to know you."

He was completely flabbergasted and had no idea what to do or say. One part of him wanted to respond and let her have her way with him. But his training and his inherent shyness had taken over completely by that point. He didn’t remember saying anything. The only thing he recalled was fleeing out the restaurant’s door like a thousand angry rancors were hot on his tail.

The memory of that meeting had followed him around the galaxy, haunting him on a near monthly basis for over fifteen years. The embarrassment was terrible, but so was the disappointment that he hadn’t been able to handle such a simple lustful encounter. In the years that followed, he envisioned how he should have reacted—he could have been appreciative of her leering, or call her out for such lewd behavior, or one of a million other much more smooth answers.

“Some things change,” he replied to Meaghan’s statement at last, banishing the memory.

She grinned at him slyly. “Apparently. You’re a Jedi now?”

“I was always a Jedi in training. Our first meeting was just an odd chain of events.” He met her eyes. “To be honest, I’m surprised you remembered my name.”

Meaghan looked away first, as if she was a little apprehensive. “I’m surprised you remembered mine,” she answered, the amusement in her tone at odds with her suddenly unsure expression.

“Our first meeting was preordained by the Force, I have no doubts of that.”

That got her attention. “Oh?”

He nodded, a slight nervous smile on his face. “In my line of work, I’ve met a lot of different people. Some of them made me offers with a lot less class than you did.”

That wasn’t at all what she expected to hear. She let out a loud burst of surprised laughter that carried over the surrounding conversations before she clamped her hand over her mouth. “I doubt that,” she retorted sardonically.

“Oh no, it’s true!” he assured her.

As the two of them erupted in shared mirth again, a waiter came by with a bag of ice. “Here, m’lady.”

Meaghan never quite met the server’s eyes. “Thanks.” She slapped the cold bag over her growing bruise, in part to cover her injury, but also to hide some of her face.

Raestro found the words coming with difficulty again. It wasn’t nearly as awkward as the first time he tried to talk with her, but still nowhere near as natural as it should have been. Over the years, he had received overly descriptive offers from females, attractive and not, from all over the galaxy, but none of them had ever left him as thoroughly tongue-tied as this woman.

He coughed into his closed fist. “Actually, I hoped I’d see you again one day. I wanted to redeem myself from such a dreadful first impression.”

She recovered her equilibrium quickly, composing her face to amusement. “Well you’re doing much better this time.” Meaghan eyed him suspiciously. “You mean to tell me that you’ve thought about me for the last...what...fifteen years?”

Raestro grinned sheepishly, only able to nod an affirmative.

Meaghan pulled the ice bag closer to her face, covering more of it. “Well, for what it’s worth, I’ve thought about you too.”

“What?” he said, breaking into anxious laughter. “Why?”

She looked at him as though he were daft. “You were the ideal specimen of a human male.” Her hesitancy suggested shyness. “Still are, actually, though the robes aren't all that flattering.”

He couldn’t help the laughter that leapt out of his mouth. This conversation was almost as weird as their first! “Well thank you, but let me remind you that I was the one gawking first.”

“Would you look at me like that again?” she asked playfully.

“Yeah,” he returned immediately. He couldn’t stop the tinge that reddened his features. Damn! I was trying not to blush like this! Guess I need to work harder on body control.

Meaghan’s gaze was almost hopeful. “Does that mean you’ll take me home?”

His eyes couldn’t have opened any wider if someone had pinched his bottom. Duty and biology warred viciously within him. Raestro was as tempted as he had ever been in his life.

“I’m sorry,” he said at last. He hoped she understood his regret. “I...can escort you home...”

“But you won’t come in,” she finished for him.

He shook his head firmly, a sad smile across his lips.

Disappointment engulfed her like a supernova. She twitched her lips in a gesture that was supposed to be an understanding smile, though it failed miserably. “Then I should probably go. It was a pleasure to meet you again, Master Jedi.” For the first time, there was another emotion more potent than the perpetual seductive twinkle in her eyes. She scraped the chair back and stood. “Have a great life.” She tossed the bag of ice onto the table where it thunked down and slid a little ways.

Raestro grinned wryly at her words, a not-so subtle attempt to write him out of her life forever. “You, too.” He didn’t really want to end it that way, but what else could he do?

As she turned and began walking, she made it obvious she wasn’t hurrying. Each step maximized the gracefulness of her fine figure and long legs. Her behind filled the seat of her tight jumpsuit perfectly, making it another near irresistible enticement. He almost stood up and followed her. Twice. If she had looked back, Raestro would have been leaning over the cusp of making a life-changing decision. He watched her until she was almost out of sight before turning to a server with a raised finger.

“Corellian Brandy!” he ordered. "Make it a double!"

At that moment, Meaghan did turn to look at him. Her sly eyes and the mischievous twist of her thick lips was a strong suggestion that she hadn’t given up completely...

Thank you! blush I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Still, if she has her way, I don't think there's any way they can keep from becoming 'attached' together...

Do you all really want a sequel? I mean, just because the plot bunny nudged doesn't mean I have to pay attention to it...

OK, I'm usually not one for a story with ALL OCs, but these were incredibly well-written. Their characters were solid, believable, and people I'd love to read about again. I'm DEFINITELY interested in a sequel. I adore both of your characters!!

Okay you guys. You asked for it. I'll be sending everybody who asked for a PM a link to the continued story. As most bunnies do, this one has spiraled out of control. I've got at least three or four posts' worth done already with at least a little more coming.

If there's anything specific you'd like to see in this story, let me know via pm or comment. I'm pondering a uhh... you-know-what themed PM ONLY post, but I haven't done that sort of thing before, so I'm not sure how that would work out. Still, you demanded a sequel, if you demand...uh...that who am I to say no? Might need a beta, though. Or at least a guiding hand. wink

No more stalling. Here's Raestro's continuation...

__________________________________

It was a good hour before Raestro left the bar. Despite his Jedi fortitude, his steps were none-too-steady after all those brandies. To make things even worse, the buzz he was feeling only seemed to scramble his body control; it didn’t seem to numb the disappointment he was feeling, or decrease the intensity of his mental reasoning. He did understand his guilty conscience though, and knew it would be better to avoid any other Jedi if possible. Of course, that was easier said than done, especially when walking through the crowded halls of the Jedi Temple.

“Raestro,” said a familiar voice, dropping a freighter-sized lump into his stomach. The shock caused his innards to lurch uncomfortably as the ship landed, making it even more unpleasant since the ship felt like it had launched all escape pods and those were madly bouncing around inside him. “Injured are you?”

Of course it had to be Yoda who found him. The universal law of running into someone you know was inversely related to how much you want to see them. The little green Master was about the last person he wanted to see. Knowing that, Raestro should have realized that put him on a 99% likelihood of a meeting Yoda. At least until all the alcohol was purged from his system.

“No, Master,” he answered confidently, hoping past the strong suspicion that he was already in trouble. He prayed that his speech wasn’t slurred.

If the human didn’t know better, he would have said that Yoda was hiding a smirk.

“Come with me you should.”

“But Master, I think—“

“Now.”

The smirk, if that’s indeed what it was, still played underneath the features of the wizened old Jedi. But Raestro’s defiance had made Yoda’s eyes harden visibly.

Now I know what that cheating Bith felt when I told him to stay put.

“Yes Master.”

Raestro’s stomach burbled anxiously as Yoda lead them into a room empty of sentients or furniture.

“Sit,” Yoda said in a tone that brokered no nonsense.

Busted. Raestro sat on the ground, cross-legged.

“Explain.”

“Explain what, Master?” Raestro knew he was in trouble, now. What could he leave out of the story to make himself look like less of an idiot?

Yoda sighed heavily, his near limitless patience beginning to wear thin. “Your turmoil have I felt for hours. Understand more what affects you so strongly, I would.”

He tried to quickly think of a way to spin it all together, but the sharp rap of Yoda’s gimer stick on the tiled floor drove all the omissions and half-truths out of his head like a thin plume of smoke in a sandstorm. Raestro had no choice. He told Yoda the whole truth, though his normally mild ego hated him for doing so.

_______________________________________________________________

The telling took a good half hour even though Yoda never interrupted. After the first couple of minutes, Raestro even had hopes that spilling the beans would be therapeutic, that he might even be able to leave the embarrassing events of his distant and recent past behind him.

On that point, he was disappointed. The longing he felt towards Meaghan didn’t lessen. Flimsy as it was, it seemed his last hope was that the disappointment would fade away, given enough time.

Once the story was told in its entirety, Yoda surprised him by chuckling, a warm pleasant sound that, though it was ominous, still filled him with a new sense of hope. Wise Yoda must have some idea of how to help rid him of these distracting emotions.

“Hard, a Jedi’s life is,” he said, an odd look of understanding on his face. “Not easy is it to follow the Code.”

“Yes Master.” Here comes the tidbit that will solve my problems, as Yoda has always been able to. he thought optimistically.

“The Force keeps itself always in balance. The grass will grow, only to be consumed by herbivores. Herbivores are killed and eaten by predators. Scavengers clean up whatever remains. The old die, and the young are born. Always, the young are born.”

If Raestro was reading him correctly, the expression on the little green Master’s face was…wistful.

But really, what in space was that supposed to mean? “I think you lost me, Master.”

The Master sighed again, a look of mischievousness on his face. “On rare occasions, what the Masters know not, hurts them not, hmm?” Yoda’s laughter was surprisingly strong, nearly an uncontrolled guffaw.

Raestro’s brow furrowed in confusion for a moment until what Yoda said filtered through all the layers of his mildly inebriated and rather perplexed brain. “Master!” he exclaimed, aghast. “You’re suggesting that I break the Code to…to…couple with this woman?”

Yoda’s expression conveyed what could have been cautious affirmation. “Itches that ignored are, can sometimes intensify enough to cause madness. Scratching not for fifteen years, yet still having the itch, qualify as madness, it can. Perhaps by scratching this itch will you make it vanish.”

That advice went completely against the Code, as he understood it. Yet, to two parts of his mind—the part that wanted to cleave the embarrassing memory from his brain, and the longstanding piece that was…very attracted to Meaghan, were both satisfied by Yoda’s solution. Still, fifteen years of uncomfortable memories couldn’t easily override almost thirty years of training.

“Master Yoda…” While he had been functioning acceptably as a Jedi Knight for nearly ten years, Raestro had rarely achieved complete communion with the Force as most Jedi seemed to be able to. Perhaps part of his lack was because of that first fateful encounter with Meaghan. Maybe by settling that issue once and for all, he could progress further in his understanding of the Force. Other worries crossed his mind, though none of them seemed as dire as the predicament he was currently facing.

“Master,” he started again. “What if it’s not just an…itch that needs to be scratched? What if my feelings complicate the issue further?”

Dark eyes considered him gravely. “Then a serious decision have you to make.”

_____________________________________________________

Hours of sobriety and meditation did little to solve his problem. When he had finally decided to track down Meaghan, he felt a little better. Still, it was a potentially irreversible choice that threatened his future with the Jedi. The wariness he was fighting threatened to take some of the potential fun out of his upcoming encounter. That’s when he realized yet another enormous hurdle. How was he supposed to find one woman amongst the teeming billions on the massive city-planet of Coruscant? He didn’t even know her last name or where she was from. She could be halfway to Kashyyyk by now, for all he knew.

Still, if it was the Force’s will, he would find her again. Eventually. He just had to hold onto his sanity long enough to do so. Deciding to start at the bar where he had seen her last, Raestro hopped into his personal speeder and raced to the Entertainment District.
