Title: “Unlikely Heroes.”
Author: LordNyax113
Timeframe: Post-Knights of the Old Republic 1.
Characters: Mission Vao, Zaalbar, Jolee Bindo
Genre: Action/Adventure
Summary: Mission and Zaalbar team up with the most unlikely of heroes to stop an insidious enemy.
Notes: Just a fun short story for all of you KOTOR fans out there (there are never enough KOTOR fics!). Also, this isn't my universe, so I don't own the characters or settings, etc.

“Pazaak!”

“Dang!” Mission Vao, frustrated, slammed her deck on card table. She had played two days straight at this local cantina with no luck so far. Apparently this deck wasn’t as strong as that sleazy Rodian dealer had purported it to be.

[Mission, can we leave now? My fur is sweaty and itching, and I must bathe soon]

“Okay, okay Zaalbar. Geez! Before, I couldn’t even get you to bathe once a month! Now it’s, like, every other day!”

Mission turned away from Zaalbar back to Goryfur. “Sorry bud, but can I take a rain check? I’ve got to get going.”

“Absolutely! Keep working at it, you’ll get better Mission,” encouraged the short but confident Chadra-Fan.

[My patience is growing thin.]

“All right! Hold your laigreks! Peace Gor!” Mission pushed her seat back in, then flicked a credit chip on the table. “Make sure the waiter gets that! Bye!”

Mission whistled as her and Zaalbar exited the densely packed cantina. Around here, it was one off the only places to have a good time.

“I really stunk it up out there, huh Big Z?”

[I agree. I could have played better than you and I haven’t played since childhood.]

“Hey!” protested Mission. “I wasn’t that bad…was I?”

[You played worse than a drunk Jedi with a lightsaber through his head.]

“Cut it out Big Z! You better hush or I’ll make you wear a suit again!” Both of them laughed as they waved bye to the bouncer, a Trandoshan named Nassk, who defied his culture’s norms by rejecting bounty hunting, refusing to eat his fellow hatchlings, and striking up a rapport with Zaalbar.

“So what do you want to do tomorrow Big Z?”

Zaalbar continued to keep in stride with Mission.

[Beats me. There’s no business, really, and besides the cantina and Waterfall Peaks, is there really much to do?]

Mission sighed. “Yeah, I know. Not much to do right? Well, we both made this bed. We have to lie in it.”

[To the contrary, I adamantly opposed us moving here to Bpfassh, but to no avail. Besides, I couldn’t say no to you, not after all we’ve been through.]

Mission’s eyes narrowed to indicate here disappointment in herself. ‘Yeah, I know, but c’mon; you can hardly blame me. Everything seemed so perfect. A planet offering credits to help beef up the population, the economy needing help rebuilding after the Mandalorian and Sith skirmishes. Perfect opportunity for a private investigation company, right? Right, Big Z?

[Erm…]

Mission put her hand on her hip in trademark fashion. “C’mon, don’t beat around the wroshyr tree with me. You can be honest with me, you know that.”

[Okay then. It was a bad decision. Not the business part, but starting it here. This place is a rock. Even free credits couldn’t keep me here. We should have gone back to Coruscant, where we had connections with the Jedi and that Onasi fellow.]

“Maybe you’re right. I guess, with what we went through with Taris, that I was afraid to go back to such a place, you know? I hated the discrimination on Taris, the smell, but it was home in a weird way. So now that I think about it, I think Coruscant might be an okay option. Let me think about it, kay?”

[Take your time. We are still due 2,000 credits in a couple weeks. That will pay off the lease for our office and help us get to Coruscant.]

“Good thinking, Zaalbar. Let’s go to the office and see if anyone-”

“Excuse me, Twi’lek!” interrupted a voice from behind. “May I have a word?”

Mission and Zaalbar turned around to see a funny looking mammalian person approaching.

“Greetings,” he said, his hand held out in a respectful gesture to his side. “I am J’hranix Naska. But you may call me by my first title, J’hranix. May I speak with you and your companion for a moment?”

“Sure,” Mission obliged with a shrug.

“I was told by a very peculiar Trandoshan that you were private investigators, correct?”

Mission and Zaalbar glanced at each other, smiled, and nodded. Maybe business was about to pick up after all.

So true! tongue

[You played worse than a drunk Jedi with a lightsaber through his head.]

laugh I about died laughing at that line.

applause I loved this! The banter was perfect, and I could hear Mission saying every word. Mission and Zaalbar don't get enough love when it comes to fanfiction.

Could you please PM me when you update? batting

"Allow me to explain why I am here. I am a officer with the Department of Restoration and Security for the Senate.”

“Never heard of it,” said Mission. Zaalbar roared something quite similar also.

“It doesn’t surprise me,” he responded, his eyes twinkling. “We are newly formed, having been chartered for a temporary purpose. We are to visit and try and analyze the various situations on different planets affected by the war.”

“In that case, this planet could use the help. Half of their cities are damaged or completely flattened,” explained Mission. “Guess that’s why business is so terrible.”

“That is true, but it is nowhere the scale of Telos IV or Taris, or even Dantooine. But I have come to the conclusion that this planet offers great potential for my superiors.”

“Why is that?”

“Well, the Republic needs actual examples of restoration to show that the Republic as a whole can be mended. As a Caamasi, I have a deep sympathy and compelling urge to help those in need. I am convinced Bpfassh could be restored with relative ease and convince the Senate to approve more massive restoration projects such as Telos IV.”

[Where do we come in?]

“While I am here, no one else from my department is. We are stretched thin in both manpower and credits. I need you to investigate strange happenings that have occurred here.”

[I am surprised, pleasantly though, that you understand my tongue, J’hranix.]

“Thank you, kind Wookie. It has taken me years to master such an ability. Not to mention that half my brethren have never heard of your homeworld. Now, moving on. Lately, towns across the desert have been undergoing…disturbing trends.”

“What do you mean?” Mission’s expression grew concerned.

J’hranix waved his hand eastward. “Recently, towns have been undergoing theft of their shield generator matrix. These matrixes allow for the towns to be shielded from acid rain and the dust storms common to this world. The next day, communication towers are disabled. Then finally, the whole citizenry disappears. Seeing that towns are thousands of miles apart, the news travels slowly. It doesn’t help that the nearby planet, Praesitlyn, maintains little to no contact with your capital. It took me days after landing here to discover these happenings.”

“You want us to find out what happened?”

“Sort of. The pattern of town ‘shut-downs’ if you will, point to this one as next in line. I wish you to find out who or whom this or these saboteurs are and help me bring them to justice. As I speak they may be among us.”

Mission rubbed her chin in thought. “We’ll do it.”

[Are you sure about this?]

“Aren’t I always, Big Z?”

J’hranix smiled, although it was hard to discern. “Good. Hopefully, we’ll be able to solve this mystery and save this town. For your efforts, the Republic has authorized a maximum amount of 4,500 credits as payment.”

Mission looked at him like he was insane. “4,500? Our fees are way lower. Try 2,750.”

His eyes lit up. “Really?” he blurted out, flabbergasted. “Thank you, very much. Both the Republic and I appreciate your generosity.”

She flicked her wrist and hand. “It’s no biggie. Why don’t you come by my office tomorrow morning and we’ll get started.”

He bowed. “Thank you, once again. If you shall need me before than, I will be at your local inn, room 4.”

He turned around and headed for the inn.

“Well, Big Z, looks like we’ll be on Coruscant sooner than we thought.”

Great work so far! I was excited to see a Mission and Zalbaar fic. This sort of job makes a lot of sense for them after their adventures with the Ebon Hawk.

I'm really surprised that Mission turned down the high reward. She's grown up.

Can you add me to your PM list too?
