Title: Palace of Gold
Genre: General
Summary: The origins of the droid G0-T0 in the aftermath of the Jedi Civil War. A tale of insanity, revenge, and plans that don't go according to plan.
Characters: G0-T0, nameless Duros programmer, nameless demented programmer

Author's Note: This song is Blue Rodeo's Palace of Gold from the albumn of the same name.

Disclaimer: I own nothing here.

So the story is often told
Of how a man sells his soul
And how it's lost before he knows
And all he's left with is his palace of gold
He's got more than he needs
He's so very hard to please
Finds it difficult to be kind
Easy to criticize, he's so high
In the palace of gold

The task that had been given to Aratec by the Galactic Republic seemed to be a very simple challenge. Design and programme a new variety of droid that would act as a prototype to aid in the reconstruction of planets destroyed over the course of the Jedi Civil War. The programmer given lead of the project, an unassuming yet ambitious Duros whose name has long since been forgotten by history, indeed by the droid itself, relished the task.

He worked endlessly for hours on end, a wondrous and deep gleam in his eyes as he worked through the motions involved. First during the design and then during the building of the actual prototype. He’d talk obsessively of his work, annoying his relatives and co-workers to no end. He would talk of the droid that he would build.

“This planetary reconstruction droid will be the envy of all who behold it.” He’d say before proceeding to describe to all his fellows exactly what it would do and how it would achieve everything he’d boasted that it would do. In the end, it would leave them groaning even more than ever.

Thus, one of them decided to make a play of his own during the process. Something in him had snapped during the planning stages of the project, listening to the senior designer prattle on about the new planetary reconstruction droid and its virtues, among other things. So, the man got it into his head that he needed some form of revenge and he knew just how to get it too.

Yeah he's so high in the palace of gold
Yeah he's so high in the palace of gold
The palace of gold
The palace of gold

His plan was very simple. Rewrite the programming of the new droid so that it would go for the strictest of all interpretations of its primary directives. These directives had been supplied by the Republic when they’d awarded Aratec the contract had been meant to be somewhat flexible, creating a revolutionary but still largely conventional droid. But his plan would change that, making them ironclad.

That would be simple. He’d make it so that the droid would become so confused when confronted with these directives that it would snap, just as he did. The droid would no doubt seek to destroy itself shortly after it was first turned on and he’d get to see every glorious moment of that destruction.

The demented programmer could hardly wait.

In the prison of your soul
Where every man must carry his own soul
Some men fall, some men fly
High in the palace of gold

That fateful day on Telos, on board Citadel Station, which now virtually covered half the ruined planet even from orbit, the demented programmer was in attendance. He was anxiously waiting for the unveiling and like a child waiting for his next trip to the candy store; he could hardly shake the grin off his face. He really couldn’t wait for the moment when he thought that the planetary reconstruction droid, or G0-T0 as they had dubbed him, would find that fundamental flaw in his programming and blow up from the stress of it all.

But as the speaking dignitaries droned on and on, finally allowing its beaming head-designer to unveil his much beloved creation, what he thought would happen, didn’t happen. The droid simply came on line, floated there, introducing itself and flashing a few simple lights that indicated it was working properly. That shouldn’t have happened in his mind and the demented man was beyond disappointed.

There before him stood the man who had ruined his life in his opinion, with his perfectly designed droid. The Duros was elated and his sabotage clearly hadn’t worked. The programmer was distraught at his inability to have sabotaged it with his perfectly executed plan. At that point, the final thread of his precarious sanity finally snapped.

After he lunged toward his perceived nemesis and his creation, security rushed him and dragged the man away. There was no going back from that point for the demented programmer, as he would never be the same again.

He would never know what happened with the droid he thought he had so masterfully sabotaged.

Yeah he's so high in the palace of gold
Yeah he's so high in the palace of gold
The palace of gold
Yeah he's so high
Yeah he's so high
Yeah he's so high

Within a month though, the programmer’s sabotage did take effect and the droid simply disappeared one night from Telos, never to return. Search parties were commissioned and sent, rewards were posted but all to no avail. It was never thought to be caused by any form of deliberate sabotage but rather a theft orchestrated by the Exchange, which no doubt would see the value of such a droid on the galactic black market. However that wasn’t the case.

The flaw came from the protocols G0-T0 was supposed to follow in its vital work on Telos.

*Produce options to rebuild the Republic
*Follow all laws of the Republic

Unable to follow its programming properly without breaking a law, the droid didn’t blow up as the demented programmer had intended. It simply left of its own accord. To achieve its mission though any means it deemed fit and necessary.

In the palace of gold
In the palace of gold

Next, I think I'll try tackling Bulletproof. Have to still figure out who that fits best though grin

Thanks for reading! Glad that you liked the G0-T0 appearance as well as the programmer's descent into madness. I do aim to please and glad it worked out here.
