Operation VH chapter 4

Major Bishop crouched down next to Jacen Solo.

Yes!

There was something there, something he could use as an anchor to pull Jacen back.

Bishop focused himself, and then threw everything he had into holding Jacen where he was.

“Don’t waste your strength. He’s gone.”

That came from Danni Quee.

“He’s not gone yet, and I’ll be damned if I’m failing this time.”

Bishop didn’t say anything else, instead focussing on dragging Jacen back.

Carl, Cheng, Rebecca and Karen added their own strength to his.

He’d done this before, to help Carl Jenkins, although that had been easier, as Carl hadn’t been subjected to a mental assault that could shatter walls.

Bishop felt the remnants of Jacen’s mind slipping out of his grasp.

“No damn way Solo. I’ve never failed before, and I’m not gonna start now. Come back kid, you can’t help anyone if you die here.”

Bishop felt Jacen’s mind hold on, in response to his mental commands, while Carl and Cheng, exceptionally powerful psychics both, dragged him back to consciousness.

“He’s fine,” Bishop stated calmly, “but it will take a few months for him to recover from a mental attack that severe.”

***********************************************************

Back on Borlieas, the Roughnecks were on jungle patrol for the fourth day running after dispatching the Queen.

Their objectives: prevent the Yuuzhan Vong ground forces from retaking any further territory, and proceed deeper into the jungle to clear out enemy forward bases.

“Apes, fall it back to the clearing! Marauders, lay down suppressive fire!”

“My Marauders running on fumes here,” Doc shouted over the weapons fire, “we’d better wrap this up fast!”

“Got it. Gossard, lay down a firewall!”

“Way ahead of you, LT. As usual.”

Gossard launched a volley of plasma rockets, creating an impenetrable screen of green-white fire that would last for about ten minutes before burning out.

“Marauders out of gas. We finished at the right time.”

Gossard climbed out of the Marauder, pulling off his helmet and taking a deep breath.

“Damn, I’ve missed none-recycled air.”

The Roughnecks were so intent on relaxing while a ret-ship arrived, that none of them noticed the dark shape crawling atop Gossard’s Marauder. At least, until it jumped Gossard, slashing him across the face before T’Phai planted a rocket in its torso, hurling it backwards before detonating.

“Voxyn,” Anakin spat, “I thought we got the last of them on Mrykr. Doc, check Gossard.”

Doc was already on it, plugging the medical scanner link into its connector port on Gossards suit.

“Minor eye injuries, but he should be fine in a day or two.”

Johnny smiled. Doc had finally figured out that not everyone had his medical knowledge, so he kept it simple.

“Well then, let’s get back to base.”

***********************************************************

Johnny walked out of the ops building, looking over the datapad containing their new orders.

They were to head into enemy held territory and pinpoint the cloning centre for the new voxyn, providing telemetry for an orbital strike.

No easy, but when had MI ever been given the easy jobs?

“Roughnecks, I got new orders from command. Intel has pinpointed where they think the voxyn are being cloned. Our orders are to head up river, and set up an airstrike beacon. We are then to evacuate and pick up the pieces.”

“Who’s on Marauder?”

“As you volunteered, private Solo, you can drive the bus. Now grab some sack time. We move tomorrow morning.”

***********************************************************

Higgins swept his camera over the deck of their transport to enemy central.

“Kind of a nice place, isn’t it?”

“Higgins,” Anakin responded, from the opposite side of the deck, “keep your eyes on the road paperboy.”

“Incoming,” T’Phai reported from the front of the ship.

Anakin looked up, with the infrared visor showing the voxyn up as splotches of dark-blue against the red of the jungle.

“Torch ‘em,” Johnny ordered, striding out of the command deck with a flamer ignited and burning.

The first bullets rising from the ship knocked voxyn into the river, where even Higgins couldn’t miss them.

“Get below. We’re entering through the back door.”

***********************************************************

As soon as Doc cut through into the tunnel, Johnny waved Anakin and Tahiri on point as they moved out.

“Digi-scan mapping 80 percent complete. Only one chamber in this place big enough for the cloning setup. And it’s big enough for half an army as well. If we go in, I’m not too optimistic about our chances.”

“Plot a course.”

***********************************************************

As the squad crouched in the entrance to the cloning chamber, Doc scanned the place with his IFF system.

“This is not good. I’d estimate they can produce eighty in about twelve hours, and that’s if this is the only cloning chamber.”

“Plant the beacon. We cannot, under any circumstances, let these things survive.”

“Beacon active LT. Beginning extraction.”

“Solo, rear cover. Doc on point.”

The squad moved, running like hell was coming five steps behind them.

Unbeknownst to them, it is.

Anakin checked his motion tracker,.

“I got traces. Lots of them, coming up from behind. I’ll handle this.”

Whirling the lumbering battle-suit around, Anakin activated the shoulder lamp, illuminating the tunnel.

In it, obscuring the walls from view, were dozens, if not hundreds, of voxyn, smaller than most but still pretty big.

“Firewall away!”

That would have signalled the end of most of the voxyn, but for one minor problem.

“Marauder power depletion at critical. Five minutes of reserve power left. Insufficient power to charge firewall.”

“Perfect timing. Guys, my Marauders low on fuel. I’ll meet you outside.”

“Negative. You don’t have the power. Stay put, and we’ll find you.”

“Not an option LT. Can’t be underwater when the suit gives out. Shutting down all none-essential systems, radio and weapons included. Track me by locator beacon. Solo out.”

Higgins looked over at Tahiri, who was worried sick.

“He’s wearing a Marauder. They won’t be able to touch him.”

“Not true Higgins. My Marauder just gave out. Even with everything minus the actuators offline, Solo’s can’t be far behind.”

***********************************************************

As it happened, Doc was right.

Anakin checked the map again. Nearly at the surface, but nearly out of time.

“Two minutes of reserve power left.”

“Shut up!”

Anakin swatted another one of the pygmy voxyn, knocking it in the wall, hopefully killing the blasted thing.

“Time to barrage computer?”

“ETA ten minutes.”

“Good. Then I’ve got time.”

Powering the shoulder cannon back up, and diverting power from the power-suit he was wearing under the Marauder armour, Anakin blasted a hole out into the jungle outside.

“Thank the Force,” he muttered, climbing out of the Marauder and removing the helmet, not seeing the voxyn crawling over the Marauders back.

Anakin started turning as it pounced.

Not fast enough.

Its teeth tore through the waist joint in the power-suit and ripped into an organ that hurt.

Anakin couldn’t even scream, it hurt so much.

Instead, he grabbed the sidearm in a skirt armour pocket, and jammed it into the chinks between scales.

Firing twice, he created a gap big enough to shove a grenade in.

He slapped the jump jets, launching him outside the blast.

The voxyn never knew what hit it.

Anakin forced himself to stay conscious, placing a bacta patch over the injury and praying.

Then, standing up, he started walking towards the base.

***********************************************************

Tahiri was sitting in the sub, listening to Johnny arguing with general Antilles over the bombardment, when she sensed that Anakin was in major trouble.

“Lieutenant, I can find him.”

“Tell Gossard where to go.”

***********************************************************

Anakin collapsed.

He couldn’t get back up again, with the injury in his side.

“Master Ikrit, it looking like my time here or what?”

There was no answer forthcoming from the deceased Jedi, but something moved.

Another voxyn, larger than most, and weaker, but still capable of killing him, lumbered across the river.

Hand shaking, Anakin raised the sidearm, intent on taking the thing with him.

A missile appeared out of nowhere, striking it in the side and blasting it to oblivion.

Tahiri ran to his side, dropping the launcher as she did.

“Hey Tahiri. Guess I really screwed up this time, huh?”

“Just shut up and let me rescue you Hero-Boy.”

“No, don’t move him.”

“We move him or lose him. In sixty seconds this sector is nothing but a bad memory,” Johnny yelled over the report of his rocket launcher.

***********************************************************

As it happened, Jaina had been assigned to patrol that sector at Major Bishop’s command, and picked up the com chatter.

“Alpha leader to any available retrieval ships. Need extraction from northeast sector 9-1-6-5. Have a man down and orbital barrage in two minutes. Repeat, need extraction.”

“This is captain Jaina Solo to Roughnecks. I’m inbound, ETA thirty seconds.”

“Roger Twins lead. Have you in sight. Damn, its good to see you.”

Jaina set the ship down, lowering the landing ramp and praying the injured man wasn’t her little brother.

“Get on lieutenant. That’s an order.”

“Yes ma’am. You heard the lady apes, into the boat.”

Jaina dived into controls, checking the bombardment timer.

“Twenty seconds to barrage. Hang on, ‘cause this isn’t going to be a pleasure cruise.”

Jaina shoved the throttle forward hard enough to damage it, and the acceleration threw any trooper standing to the deck.

“Clear of projected blast area. You are now free to walk around the cabin, and the autopilot has been engaged.”

She climbed into the troop bay to find the squad standing over Doc and Tahiri, who were both tending to Anakin.

“You hold on you big fraud,” Tahiri whispered, then turned to Doc.

“Is he going to be alright?”

“It’s not good. He’s bleeding internally, and one of his kidneys is shredded. We need to get him to the hospital at the biotics building soon.”

“I heard,” Jaina shouted, already at the controls and pushing the ship well beyond its recommended speed limit.

“I’m kind of tired Tahiri. Just let me sleep for a little while…”

“Anakin? Anakin?! Speak to me, please.”

This is a little short, but don't hold that against me please.

Operation VH chapter 5

Doc checked the med scanners.

“There, another spike in his heart rate.”

“That’ll happen,” the naval doctor agreed, “ but private Solo has been in a coma for three days.”

“You said he was all patched up.”

“Physically he is fine. But the man was clinically dead when you brought him in. His brain was deprived of oxygen for longer than a human could, by rights, survive, and it’s a miracle he has. Now, maybe his luck will hold, and we can get him out of this, but maybe not.”

“Right, right. I’ve got to go, I’m on night patrol. I’ll be sending one of the Roughnecks to keep an eye on him.”

***********************************************************

The Roughnecks trudged through the stream, demoralised by losing one of their personnel to a stupid mechanical screw-up.

“You know,” Dizzy was saying to Gossard, “since you got your eye cut, this is the third time I’ve been passed over to wear the Marauder.”

“You think I like it?” Max Brutto responded from inside the exo-armour, “You know, one rookie messes up and gets impaled by a bug…”

“This isn’t on Solo,” Gossard retorted, “he did right by us, and the Marauder. Should’ve been me in the suit. Should be me in the tank. I should be the one dying.”

“Anakin is NOT dying,” Tahiri shouted, knocking Gossard back.

“Tahiri, I didn’t…” Gossard stopped, “You hear that?”

“What?”

“Nothing. That ain’t right. In a jungle, there should be something, even this late. What’s the info LT?”

“Don’t know. We’d better head back to base camp.”

***********************************************************

“Listen up Roughnecks. High command says there’s a storm, actually a monsoon, brewing about a hundred K southwest. It’s big enough to make the one we saw on Tesca look like a clear summer day.”

“We’re evacuating then?”

“No way,” Doc responded, “Solo can’t be evacuated. We so much as nudge him now, he dies.”

“Okay, I’ll get on the line to General Antilles, convince him someone needs to stay behind to make sure the Yuuzhan Vong don’t, uh, retake the beachhead once the storm passes.”

“You taking volunteers?” Higgins asked.

“I’ll assume Veila makes it unanimous, and yes. I am taking volunteers.”

***********************************************************

“Anakin, why do you keep doing this to me? Can’t you just once not get yourself nearly killed?”

“Any change?”

“No Doc. I’ve tried everything, and still nothing.”

“Then just talk to him. Give him a reason to come back to us. Science still hasn’t figured out how much a coma patient hears. Stay with him, and maybe he’ll come back.”

Tahiri nodded, then, as Doc left, moved closer to the liquid regeneration tank.

“Why now? I always thought you’d tell me this first, but maybe we don’t have much time left, and I shouldn’t be so proud. I love you Anakin Solo. Always have, always will. And if you die here, then I don’t know what I’ll do. Come back to me, please. I’d be lost without you.”

Tahiri waited a few seconds before continuing.

“Okay, I said it. Your turn. You have to wake up Anakin, and give us a chance. If you don’t, then I won’t have anything to live for anymore. And you, you’ll always wonder, about the live you missed. About all the things you never got the chance to do.”

“He’ll always hear you.”

Tahiri turned towards Jaina, who’d walked in during her little impassioned speech.

“He’s always been good at that,” Jaina commented wistfully, “always listening, that’s my little brother. Never used to talk that much, but he always listened.”

“How much did you…”

“Enough. I already knew you were in love with him, this just proves it. Stay here. I’ll take your place with the Roughnecks. Just don’t get him banged up understand?”

(This chapter is short, but I planned to do a short one anyway and this just fitted so there we are).
