Boy, I'm on a kick today . . . Okay. I don't know who the singer is, but the song is called "We've Got Tonight". This story is kinda weird . . . And it's a majour tear-jerker, and you guys are probably gonna hate me. What can I say? Angst-Queen strikes again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Tonight" by DantanaSkywalker
I know it's late
I know you're weary
I know your plans
Don't include me
It was close to midnight when the door to Kyp Durron's humble quarters opened and Jaina Solo walked in. She was clothed in something iridescent, her lustrous brown hair curling around her shoulders. She dismissed the guard that stood behind her, then closed the door.
Kyp was leaning against the wall where he sat on his bed, his legs drawn up, his arms resting loosely on his knees. He gazed at her with something akin to surprise in his green eyes.
Still here we are
Both of us lonely
Longing for shelter
From all that we see
"Jaina," he rasped. "What are you doing here?"
"I had to see you," she said quietly. "Before tomorrow."
He glanced away, a resigned expression on his face. "Why are you tormenting me like this?"
"I don't want to torment you. You know I'm being forced into this. Not this," she amended, motioning to the small room. "Tomorrow. They're forcing me. I don't want to go through with it. I don't want to . . ."
Why should we worry
No one will care, girl
Look at the stars
So far away
Jaina stopped, then slowly moved forward. Kyp noticed that her feet were bare under her dress. She perched on the edge of his bed. "I wanted to . . . clear the air. I mean, as much as I can, given the circumstances."
Kyp just looked at her.
She placed her hand on his arm. "Kyp. There are . . . things I've never said, things I should have said a long time ago. If I'd known what I know now, I'd have said them back when it would have made a difference."
He raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
A delicate blush filled her cheeks. She stood and walked over to the wall. A hidden viewport cleared when she touched it. After a moment, Kyp stood and walked to stand behind her.
We've got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
We've got tonight, babe
Why don't you stay
The stars were white pinpricks in the distance. Just peeking over the horizon of their view was a lush, green planet. After seconds of staring, Jaina sighed.
"This alliance was the stupidest thing we could have done," she whispered. "We should have expected they'd seize power. Because of some stupid, gullible politicians, we've lost everything we fought for so long to keep, or win back. If we'd just taken your approach from the beginning, things wouldn't be like this."
Deep in my soul
I've been so lonely
All of my hopes
Fading away
Silently, Kyp wrapped his arms around her. She sighed and leaned back against him, closing her eyes.
"I don't want to do this," she whispered. "I'm giving up who I am. Jaina Solo won't exist anymore. I'll be someone else, something else. But if I go through with it, I'll be in a position to stop it all."
"I know. And given everything, this is the only way."
"I just wish that it wasn't the only way."
"So do all who live to see such times," Kyp murmured against her hair. "But we can't change the past. All we can do now is decide what to do with the time that's given to us."
"Which, for us, isn't that long. We have until the morning, and then everything changes."
I've longed for love
Like everyone else does
Know I'll keep searching
Even after today
Jaina twisted in his arms. "Kyp . . ."
"Yes, Goddess?"
She grimaced. "For once, Kyp, call me anything but that."
"As you wish." He reached up and stroked her hair. "Jaina . . ."
"I love you," she blurted.
So there it is, girl
I've said it all now
His hand stilled. "What?"
"I love you. I . . . I always have. I was just afraid to admit it, and when I admitted it, I was afraid to say it. But . . . I love you."
Kyp sighed and closed his eyes. He pressed his forehead to hers. "Jaya. You just made this whole thing harder."
Jaina touched his cheek. Tears glittered in her brandy coloured eyes. "I know. I know. But I had to say it. I had to let you know the truth."
And here we are, babe
What do you say
He pulled her with him to the bed, and they sat. Holding her hands, Kyp said, "I love you, Jay. But you probably knew that."
"I knew. But I need you to say it again," she breathed.
"I love you," he repeated, then again, and again.
Shuddering, Jaina placed a finger to his lips. "Now . . . I need you to show me, Kyp. I need you."
He gathered her in his arms. "Oh, Jaina. Jaina."
We've got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
We've got tonight, babe
Why don't you stay
She raised her lips to his. Kyp drew her against him as he succumbed to the sheer heaven of kissing her. Her lips were soft, and tasted sweet to his starved soul.
Jaina sighed, revelling in the strength of his arms, the power within him. She dug her fingers into his long black curls. "Kyp," she said against his mouth.
I know it's late
I know you're weary
I know your plans
Don't include me
He had to drag himself away to murmur, "Turn off the light, Jaya."
She nodded once, slipped out of his arms, and walked across the room and touched the control for the light.
Kyp pulled her into his arms again.
Still here we are
Both of us lonely
Both of us lonely
Much later, Jaina lay curled against his side, her head cushioned on his shoulder as she idly traced patterns over his chest.
"I don't want to go," she said brokenly. "I don't want to lose this."
"Stay, then," he whispered. "No one's going to care. I want to make this last as long as possible."
Kyp tightened his arms around her. They were quiet, their hearts beating in time. The silence was deafening, filled with everything they'd never said, or couldn't say. This time should have been peaceful, and content. Instead, it was heart-wrenching.
We've got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
Let's make it last
Let's find a way
"Jaina."
She raised her head, though she couldn't really see him. "Yes?"
"Promise me that you'll always remember this. When things get hard, or you're sad, or lonely, remember this. Remember us."
"Always," she promised. She kissed his mouth, then murmured, "Always. Forever and always.
"Good."
Jaina snuggled as near as she could get, and closed her eyes.
It was several hours before Kyp joined her.
Turn out the light
Come take my hand now
We've got tonight, babe
Why don't you stay
In the morning, Kyp woke to find Jaina gone. The chain he always wore around his neck was gone. It took him a moment to remember that he'd given it to her last night.
He slowly dressed, then sat on the edge of his pallet and waited.
We've got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
Let's make it last
Let's find a way
He didn't wait long. It was just a matter of minutes before the door slid open and two Yuuzhan Vong warriors stroke in.
Kyp didn't resist as they stood him up and walked him out of his cell. Silently, he followed them down corridors until they reached an arena filled with spectators. The guards dragged him down the stairs, and threw him at the feet of a veiled, mysterious figure.
Turn out the light
Come take my hand now
We've got tonight babe
Why don't you stay
Kyp raised his eyes to the goddess Yun-Harla. Behind the veil, Jaina was silent, but her heart was in her eyes.
The priest standing next to her raised his hands, and the arena fell silent.
"Today, we sacrifice this Jeedai!" he shouted.
The clamour was almost sonic. He gestured sharply, but it still took time for the noise to die down. He motioned to the guards, who grabbed Kyp and secured him to an altar.
We've got tonight
Who needs tomorrow
Let's make it last
Let's find a way
Kyp's eyes never left Jaina.
The priest turned to Jaina. "Great One."
He handed her a sacrificial dagger.
Only the Jedi on the table saw the tears in her eyes as she raised the knife.
Turn out the light
Come take my hand now
We've got tonight, babe
Why don't you stay
She stared at the red drops slowly beading on the point of the dagger.
Behind her, the slaves dragged a body to the edge of the pit. To them, it was just another nameless, faceless, empty shell.
An empty shell with black hair, and green eyes.
Oblivious to the deafening cheers of her subjects, Yun-Harla dropped her dagger and walked out of the arena.
Why don't you stay

Yes, yes, yes, I'm evil. I'm totally and completely evil. And I'll be you thought she was being forced to marry some guy, didn't you? No, I'm much more devious than that.

I believe I said I'm evil.
Actually, I was gonna have it that she was being forced into marriage, and then the Yuuzhan Vong came and took him, and it just seemed so much more . . . horrid.

Oh my! I like to think of myself as both a J/J and J/K fan and that both couples can be equally written in all situations but to say the truth, I don't think Jag would have been as sad to read.

Whoa... I may not be a K/J shipper, but I still love Kyp, and this was so sad!! Poor Jaina and Kyp!! Sad as it was, though, you pulled it off beautifully - I never expected that ending!! Great work.
And I loved your borrowed LotR line. Hehe.
