Chapter 5

John carried on running, dispatching Grunts with single shots to the head and Jackals with an elbow at neck height.

Stopping to engage wasn’t an option, or at least, not while he was carrying a wounded man.

Ryans and the rest of the squad would kill whatever he missed, so no problems there.

Something else, something that fitted into his ally profiles, dived out into the corridor, blasting three Grunts into tiny pieces.

“Kelly, I’ve got a wounded man here. We need to get him and someone else on the team out NINS *.”

“Right. There are some Warthogs stashed down a side tunnel, fifty meters that way.”

Kelly pointed back the way she’d come from as Ryans arrived, bringing the rest of the team with him.

“Take Veila. We’ll hold them here as long as we can.”

With that, Ryans waved Jacen Solo towards the Spartans.

“Take Anakin and Tahiri. Guard them with your life if need be.”

Lopez crouched, bracing a Jackhammer launcher against the nearest wall and checking his rifles load.

Kelly tapped Jacen on the shoulder, extremely gently, as if she wasn’t careful she’d break his arm.

“Come on. They can hold for long enough. But we need to go now.”

After a couple of minutes running, they arrived at the clearing.

Glowing sliver in the moonlight, were three Warthog LRVs.

“You know that these are possibly the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen?” Jacen commented as they climbed into one, with Kelly taking the drivers seat, John standing in the other seat, and Jacen manning the turreted MG.

The two wounded were placed in the back of the vehicle and strapped into place.

“Lets get this show on the road,” Kelly commented as she floored the accelerator.

The acceleration shoved Jacen backwards, and would have knocked him off the Warthog if not for the gun harness.

“ETA to Autumn ten minutes.”

Jacen checked his HUD motion tracker for contacts, registering four-five of them.

“I think we have company.”

A pair of Covenant Ghosts, scout hoverbikes with twin light plasma guns, slipped through the trees, followed by three more.

“Take ‘em out.”

Jacen swung the heavy chaingun around, targeting one of the Ghosts and sending a stream of 50mm AP shells blazing toward it.

The piloting Elite returned fire with the plasma guns, launching a pair of blue-white plasma balls at the Warthog, fortunately enough however the plasma guns were highly inaccurate while moving.

The chaingun had no such problem, turning one of the Ghosts and its rider into Swiss cheese and forcing the others to stand off outside MG range.

“They’re running.” Jacen shouted back to the Master Chief.

“I don’t think so. They’re leaving us to the air support,” John responded, pointing at the dark shapes of a pair of Banshee heavy fighter/bombers descending from a carrier in orbit.

“Can’t hit them with this!” Jacen shouted, firing at the wings. He’d been fully briefed on the Banshee and knew that body hits were next to useless. On Sigma Octanus a Banshee hull had deflected almost a dozen direct hits from a Warthog’s chaingun, and still maintained structural integrity until hit by a Jackhammer rocket. The only way to destroy them with small arms was a hit on both anti-grav pods mounted on the wings, and from a moving platform you couldn’t hit them easy.

A plasma missile flashed out from the underslung launcher on one Banshee, slamming into the ground ahead and flipping the jeep onto its back.

Jacen landed hard, sending pain shooting up through his chest.

Both Spartans had been knocked out by the impact, and Anakin and Tahiri weren’t in any shape to fight.

Both Banshees left, apparently leaving him for the ground troops.

Their overconfidence would be the cause of his victory.

A Hunter moved into the clearing, its arm cannon already glowing for a blast.

As it fired, Jacen willed the energy to flow into his hand. Altering energy wasn’t a trick he’d used before, but he hoped it worked.

On the bright side, if it didn’t, he’d never know.

The bolt diminished in intensity, then vanished.

The Hunter, enraged by its failure, charged.

Jacen redirected the energy into a blast coming from his fingertips.

The Hunter, only a few feet way, flew apart.

“Got you, sithspawn,” Jacen whispered before collapsing against the nearest tree with a maniacal grin on his face.

That was how Tenel Ka and the others found him some minutes later, soaked in Hunter blood and grinning like a maniac.

***********************************************************

As the Pillar of Autumn rose from her makeshift landing bay, Keyes checked the status of his two newest bridge crewmembers.

If they had any problems with their newly implanted neural laces, they weren’t showing it.

Ensign Lovell and Lieutenant Hikowa had been injured during the Autumns crash landing, and they still weren’t fit for active duty, so he’d recruited Jaina Solo and Jag Fel to fill the positions of helm officer and weapons chief respectively.

“Status on weapons systems.”

“MAC at seventy percent and rising by eight percent a minute. All missile pods armed, Shiva and HAVOK safeties removed.”

“Good. Time to Slipstream vector alignment?”

“Estimated five minutes.”

“Excellent. Lieutenant Hall, how have the enemy fleets reacted?”

“They’re still engaging each other. They haven’t noticed us yet. Um, that just changed. One of the Yuuzhan Vong cruisers is moving on an intercept course. Estimated intercept time is three minutes.”

“Damn. This is captain Keyes to all hands. We have an incoming enemy vessel. All combat teams, stand by to repel boarders. Ryans, get those suits of Mark I armour powered up and into the reactor room ASAP.”

“This is commander Ryans to captain Keyes. I’ve already got them online.”

“Good work soldier. Anya, do we have any patients capable of fighting?”

“No sir.”

“Right. Combat team Alpha, your assignment is to protect the medical bay.”

Jag’s fingers flew over the weapons console, releasing a spread of Archer missiles at the incoming enemy, each one fused for detonation at detection of a dovin basal or contact with the cruiser hull.

Of course, Jag wasn’t just firing missiles; he was co-ordinating the Autumns point defence cannons with Cortana using the neural lace.

Keyes had never seen anyone with such a high synchronisation to a ships systems. It was almost like Jag had spent a lifetime getting to know the Autumns computer.

“Incoming boarding pods sir. We can’t get them in time. They’re headed for deck five, portside aft.”

“Jacen, you hear?”

“Yeah I heard. Combat teams Omega and Delta are already on route. Me and Tenel Ka are headed to join them.”

“Roger. Keyes out.”

***********************************************************

Jacen sprinted down C corridor, deck five.

By his estimation, they were about two-thirds the way there.

Sergeant Johnson, commander of Delta squad, greeted them and then waved his men forward.

“Alright lets move. Gotta cut ‘em off before they hit open ground!”

The marines tensed as they crouched behind barricades, praying or rechecking weapons. They were good men all, and Force willing Jacen could bring them all back alive.

The hissing of acid burning through battleplate interrupted his thoughts.

Jacen grabbed the M6D pistol on his belt. He didn’t generally go in for firepower, but the M6 backed decent stopping power in a small enough frame to be easily concealed.

The first warriors through the breach flung razor bugs at the marines, attempting to suppress them.

One caught a private in the arm, slicing through and spinning him to the deck.

“Fire at will!”

Muzzle flare lit the darkened corridor as the two squads opened up.

Each consecutive flash showed the enemy getting closer.

Eventually it turned into a bloody melee, with the UNSC troops pitting knifes against amphistaffs and smashing Yuuzhan Vong faces with rifle butts.

Jacen and Tenel Ka ignited their lightsabers and strode into the fray, with each slash felling another enemy fighter or disabling them.

The fight was turning ugly when Ryans, wearing his old suit of Mark I armour, waded into the battle, swinging the massive clawed arm and blasting away with the 30mm chaingun on the other.

Jacen finished dispatching another warrior, then buckled as something hit him like an amphistaff blow to the gut.

He checked. No damage. So why did he feel like someone had just hit him?

The answer was so totally obvious, Jacen wondered why he hadn’t realised it as soon as he’d felt it.

Whirling, he launched himself back into the battle, fighting his way towards where he’d last seen Tenel Ka.

Then the Yuuzhan Vong started withdrawing. They didn’t do that, not unless they….

Jacen started shouting orders immediately.

“Fall back. They’re planning on opening this section to space. Get through the blast doors.”

The marines responded like the highly trained veterans they were, lifting the wounded and dragging them through the blast doors.

As soon as they were clear, Jacen hit the intercom.

“Cortana, we need corridor D, deck five, portside aft, sealed off. There is a vacuum breach imminent. Repeat, vac breach imminent. Seal off D corridor now!”

The massive titanium-a battleplate blast doors, the same material as the hull armour, slammed together, protecting the team from the impending explosive decompression, and Jacen from his love.

“Enemy vessel withdrawing. We hurt it.”

Jacen knew the truth. The Vong had what they wanted, and what they’d wanted was the woman he loved.

“Jacen to captain Keyes. Set course for Mon Calamari,”

“Course heading confirmed. All hands brace for transition to Slipspace.”

They couldn’t rescue her now, not with one beaten and outdated cruiser and a handful of Jedi.

They needed help.

Hold on Tenel Ka, I’ll come for you, alone if I have to. Wait for me, my love.

Chapter 6

“No Jacen. Absolutely not. You can’t go charging off in enemy territory whenever you feel like it.”

“Master Luke, I have to go. No matter what you tell me to do, I’m going. Whether I have to defy the entire Jedi order from you on down or not is your choice.”

“You can’t. And I will use any means necessary to stop you.”

Jacen turned and walked out of the room.

“The only way to stop me is to stab me in the back. Can you do that Uncle Luke?”

***********************************************************

Anakin met Jacen outside of Mara’s quarters.

“So Jacen, the word?”

“The word, is no. I am therefore going anyway.”

“You can count on my help, and I’ll get together anyone I can.”

“What would I do without you little brother?”

“Probably get yourself killed.”

“Well thanks. Remember which one of us survived Mrykr.”

“What, officially or unofficially? Because unofficially we both survived. Officially, we were declared dead by the New Republic.”

“Point taken. You think Keyes is gonna be in on this?”

“Yeah. Whatever else you say about the guy, he can keep a secret.”

***********************************************************

Jacen looked at the motley group assembled in cryobay 2 aboard the Pillar of Autumn.

It was hard to believe they were about to go blasting into Vong territory with a single ageing cruiser and a band of Jedi and military officers.

Ryans was tinkering with a couple of Mark I battle suits, obviously trying to get some modification or other to work.

He saluted sloppily as Jacen walked over.

“Hello sir. I’ve finished something you might be interested in,” he indicated one of the two suits of power armour, “I just finished modifying this one. It’s now equipped with an independent fusion cell, an E-Web heavy repeating blaster on the right arm instead of the old 30mil gun, and a piece of experimental technology you really will like. Its all theoretical right now, but I think it should boost the wearers’ Force powers exponentially in desperate situations. I’ve dubbed it the F-2 booster unit.”

“Thanks. Any other improvements I should know about?”

“Yeah. I’ve completely replaced the armour with lightweight but tough materials. It should be far more conductive to fluid motion now.”

“I’d like to get some time in the suit to test it out.”

“Fine. I’ve got some finishing touches to put onto mine, so no sparring for a while.”

Ryans went back to attaching a 50mm chaingun salvaged from a Warthog to his battle suits arm, replacing the lower-calibre 30mm MG.

Anakin was training Kelly. He had been since they got back three weeks ago. She was becoming an expert at using the Force to augment her already exceptional combat skills. They were duelling with training lightsabers, mainly because Kelly was a lot stronger then Anakin and could easily best any defence he could throw up.

All of them stopped whatever they were doing and saluted perfectly as Keyes walked into the room, with Cortana’s holographic form floating in mid-air.

“We are on our way to the co-ordinates you provided Jedi Solo. We’ll be there in two-three hours, now would you explain your plan.”

Jacen nodded.

“Everyone to the briefing room.”

***********************************************************

Once in the briefing room, Jacen activated the holoprojector, producing a three-dimensional map of the Sernpidal system.

The entirety of the Autumns small, but proud, crew was here. They’d all volunteered for this mission.

It might be suicide, but Tenel Ka was one of them, one of the few chosen to crew the proud cruiser, and they would go to hell and back for her if need be.

“Our Plan Of Action is to infiltrate the system quietly, and slip into the shipwomb. They’re growing something big there, and I know that’s where she is. The insertion team will consist of myself and a select group of people. We are going to use ODST insertions pods on a ballistic trajectory to get there, and when the mission is concluded the Autumn will extract us. Any questions?”

No one raised their hands.

“Then man your battle stations, and may the Force be with us.”

***********************************************************

Ryans was uncomfortable. Sitting in an orbital insertion pod for three hours in a Mark I battle suit was not his idea of fun, but it was necessary to slip in unnoticed.

He checked the timer again. Still another five minutes.

Five minutes later, the camouflaged pods landed at the predetermined locations and deposited their occupants in the corridors of whatever it was in the shipwomb.

It was too large to be a worldship or any other YV coralcraft they recognised, so what was it?

They met up at what Cortana had identified as a secondary control nexus.

The team was Anakin, Tahiri, Jaina, the Master Chief, Kelly, Ryans, Lopez, and Jacen. All had been selected because they were the most skilled available, and had the nerve to walk straight into the mouth of fear and pull a few teeth out while they were at it.

“Everything ready?”

“Yes. If we aren’t ready now, we won’t ever be.”

“Let’s move then. Our route takes us directly to the core of this thing, so keep your weapons out and ready.”

As they moved through the dim corridors, Jacen felt his sense of Tenel Ka growing stronger, and the sense of a trap getting stronger as well.

Suddenly, the ship shuddered beneath their feet.

“What in the hell?”

“Drives powering up!”

***********************************************************

Jag checked the scanners again.

“Sir, the enemy super ship is moving out. Plan?”

“Take us in on an intercept vector. Course one-seven-oh-two-one-five, best possible speed, lieutenant Hall.”

“Aye sir. Reactor running hot at 350%. Engines boosted to 190%, but we can’t hold that for more than ten minutes.”

“Weapons status colonel Fel.”

“MAC at full charge, with heavy rounds loaded. Archer missile pods A1 through Z7 armed and ready for firing. Shiva missiles A-C have had the safeties removed and are in the launch tubes. All Longsword fighters prepped and ready to deploy. Is the word given sir?”

“The word is given. Fire at will. Lieutenant Hall, get our birds into the air.”

Aye-aye sir. Longsword squadrons Alpha through Gamma, you heard the captain. Get into the air and against the enemy ASAP.”

“This is Alpha one. We are ready for launch. I’ll try to bring you back a trophy miss Hall.”

“Don’t screw around with me pilot. We don’t have the time.”

“Yes ma’am. We’re go.”

“Sir! Energy spike detected. Enemy vessel powering up hyperdrive.”

Colonel Fel, ETA to weapons impact?”

“Twenty seconds.”

Red dots, representing the MAC shells and Archer missiles, streaked across the tactical display, headed right at the enemy super-ship.

Forty kilometres from impacting the hull, all the rounds winked out, pulled in by a massive black hole shield.

“Are they not getting through?”

“No sir. Not one!”

“Enemy hyperdrive powered up and activating!”

The ship flashed into hyperspace, taking their team with it.

“Send a subspace com to Mon Cal, now! That thing was headed their way!”

***********************************************************

On the orbital defence command station, Keyes message was received and, seconds later, the enemy ship flashed out of hyperspace some way out system, with a large support fleet flanking it.

“This is planetary defence command to all Super MAC power stations. Bring the guns online now! Shield control, we need all planetary shield segments in grids Epsilon-Omega online now. All defence forces, get to your stations at once.”

The SMACs were the first of the defences to go online, and the most potent. They were the single most powerful defensive weapons in the New Republics arsenal, firing 3000-ton shells at .4c, or just under half-lightspeed.

Down on the planet, the defence forces desperately rushed to get their ships in position for take-off, praying they could get there in time.
